Ooh, I have actually plenty of faves!

Of course, we have the obvious Ruth and Naomi from the Bible, literally throwing vows and speeches at each other about how much they love one another. So romantic that even straight marriage ceremonies borrow them directly!

Then, I also have the saint couple St. Perpetua and St. Felicity. Simply because they kissed before they were martyred. And there are like 3 books talking about their queerness, especially St. Perpetua.

Aaand I like to think Martha and Mary of Bethany from the New Testament are a couple too. Like, Mary and Martha formed a nontraditional family with Lazarus at a time when there was huge pressure for heterosexual marriage. Plus, Martha was the head of the household because the text describes the home as “her house” and not his. Yhea Martha and Mary does call another sisters but it’s also pretty common in the Bible and that time for couples to claim their partners as siblings to avoid persecution. Sooo, that’s my headcanon! <3

St. Martha of Bethany is a biblical��figure described in the Gospels of Luke and John. Together with her siblings Lazarus and Mary, she is described as living in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She was witness to Jesus' resurrection and of her brother, Lazarus.

Luke 10:41   And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things.

This is old stuff bc I thought it up a comple of months ago BUT since in catholicism every saint has their day, I thought it would be funny if the characters’ birthdays were on the day their saint was celebrated so here’s some birthdays.

Magdalene: July 22nd, day of Saint Mary Magdalene

Judas: there’s no saint for Judas Iscariot (duh) BUT there is a Jude, who was also an apostole, and in Italian they have the same name (Giuda) so Judas celebrate his birthday on October 28th, St. Jude lmao.

Isaac: March 25th

Jacob and Esau: December 24th and fun fact, Esau is not considered a saint by the Catholic Church, but luckily they’re twins so they’re born on the same day lol.

Eve: September 6th, Eve wife of Adam is not considered a saint (in fact, she’s probably in hell) but there is an Eva of Dreux who’s a saint so I’m using her.

Samson: July 28th. Samson is not considered a saint either (kinda like Esau) but there’s another one (Samson of Dol) who is, so I’m using his day.

Bethany: due to an inside joke her birthday is on January 9th (Saint Adrian of Canterbury, but also San Marcellino) BUT if we want to keep consistency, Saint Mary of Bethany is celebrated on July 29th (with her sister and brother, it’s like an ensemble celebration)

Lazarus: December 17th

As for the immortal characters whose birthday has been lost to time: Lilith celebrates her fake birthday on February 14th because she’s a hopeless romantic and Cain celebrates (or will celebrate) the day he finally went to Alcoholics Anonymous and took back control of his life which according to a random date generator i found on the internet is…………. November 10th.

Eden and Apollyon do not have birthdays since they were never born, but they still like to celebrate important milestones. Apollyon celebrates the day he came on Earth for the first time, while Eden likes (or will do so in the future) to commemorate the day they became human, which was a fairly traumatic experience, but still the beginning of something new. Azazel also doesn’t have a birthday, but since he was created at the beginning of humanity, Judas and Magdalene usually celebrate his not-birthday on January 1st, since it’s the beginning of the new year. I also liked the idea they’d throw him a little birthday party whenever he feels sad, even multiple times a year lol.

HOLY MARTYRS AND UNMERCENARIES COSMAS and DAMIAN IN CILICIA (4th c.), AND THEIR BROTHERS LEONTIUS, ANTHIMUS, AND EUTROPIUS.

The Martyrs and Unmercenaries Cosmas and Damian in Cilicia (Arabia), and the Martyrs Leontius, Anthimus, and Eutropius. The holy brothers Cosmas and Damian were physicians in Arabia, who believed in Christ. They traveled through the cities and the villages, preaching Christ and healing the sick. The saints would not take any sort of payment for the help they rendered. In Cilicia, pagans seized the holy physicians and led them before the governor, Lysias. Since they refused to renounce Christianity, the governor ordered the saints to be brutally beaten and then cast into the sea.

An angel of God rescued them from the sea and brought them to shore. Then the pagans beheaded the saints and three other Christians: Leontius, Anthimus, and Eutropius.

The Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Arabia should not be confused with the Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Asia Minor (November 1), or the Unmercenary Saints Cosmas and Damian of Rome (July 1).

TRANSLATION OF THE RELICS (898) OF St LAZARUS "OF THE FOUR DAYS IN THE TOMB", BISHOP OF KITION ON CYPRUS.

The Transfer of the relics of Righteous Lazarus of the Four Days, Bishop of Kiteia on Cyprus, took place in the ninth century. The Righteous Saint Lazarus, the brother of Martha and Mary, lived in the village of Bethany, not far from Jerusalem. During His earthly life, the Lord Jesus Christ often visited the house of Lazarus, whom He much loved and called His friend (John 11:3,11), and when Lazarus had died and lain four days already in the grave, the Lord raised him from the dead (John 11:1-44). (The Church remembers Saint Lazarus on the Saturday of the Sixth Week of Great Lent, “Lazarus Saturday.”)

Many of the Jews, when they heard about this, came to Bethany. Being persuaded of the reality of this most remarkable wonder, they became followers of Christ. Because of this the High Priests also wanted to kill Lazarus. Righteous Lazarus is mentioned in the Holy Gospel once more: when the Lord had come again to Bethany six days before the Passover, Lazarus was also there (John 12:1-2, 12:9-11). After his raising, Saint Lazarus lived another thirty years as a bishop on the island of Cyprus, where he spread Christianity and peacefully fell asleep in the Lord.

The holy relics of Saint Lazarus were discovered in Kiteia. They were in a marble coffin inscribed: “Lazarus of the Four-Days, the friend of Christ.” The Byzantine emperor Leo the Wise (886-911) ordered the transfer of the relics to Constantinople in 898 and their placement within the church of the Righteous Lazarus.

2. What's a song you associate really strongly with a certain show?

There's Mazurka by Edward Elgar, the theme tune from Bleak Expectations, but I think theme tunes might be cheating. Even so, when I listen to it or play it, I can hear the credits being read over the top!

I can't hear any song with a "have a banana" motif without thinking of the "Xinzhao" episode of "Cabin Pressure", nor can I hear "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" without remembering the "Ottery St Mary" ("Weasel King Henry? Hedgehog O'Brien!") episode.

But I think the song that will always, always be "Cabin Pressure" for me - because I heard it there first, and it sums up the show, I think - is "Busy Doing Nothing". Here's the first verse:

We're busy doin' nothin', workin' the whole day through,

Tryin' to find lots of things not to do.

We're busy goin' nowhere, isn't it just a crime?

We'd like to be unhappy, but we never do have the time.

10. Recommend a show!

When a tree falls in a forest, and no one's around to hear it...

IT MAKES A SOUND!

I can't stress enough how much I adore this show. It is beautiful and nostalgic and simply delightful. The sound design is just spectacular, and I love the songs!

It helped me process what was happening to my Nan and my Great Auntie when they had dementia in the last years of their lives. It reminds me of countless hours my friends and I spent at school, making music in our lunch breaks and at open evenings.

Set in a declining golf course community with roaming hoardes of feral peacocks, It Makes A Sound is the story of a search for the music that defined a generation, and the power of art to soothe.

20. Which podcast character do you think would have their own podcast in an AU?

I think Ripely from Bleak Expectations would have a podcast in the vein of "Girl Defined" - she's the daughter of a vicar and has a soundbyte for every occasion. I think once she was married she would go down the same path as Bethany, sharing all her tips for How To Be Sexy In A God-Honouring Way. St. Martha of Bethany is a biblical figure described in the Gospels of Luke and John. Together with her siblings Lazarus and Mary, she is described as living in the village of Bethany near Jerusalem. She was witness to Jesus' resurrection and of her brother, Lazarus.

Luke 10:41   And the Lord answering, said to her: Martha, Martha, thou art careful, and art troubled about many things.
