Corvex! Aryus' older sister, I decided to go for a stronger night and moon color scheme to compliment Aryus' sun inspired color scheme. While Aryus got a redesign a few years ago now, I really struggled to give Corvex an upgrade that I was happy with until now!

how do you approach designing characters? was wondering since i fucking love your characters and wonder what your thought process is

It depends! usually what happens is I find something randomly while scrolling that i like and build off of that. In other cases I scroll through my character design insp folder and pick up on things I like.

for example with Kaisain:

I always pick a color I want to focus on first, which for him was green. If you notice, most of my OC's have one main color besides brown that I picked to focus on. I also LOVE asymmetrical designs and in the past ive overdesigned characters so i wanted to keep it simple.

Then looking through my character inspo folder, I found these:

the first one is obvious where i pulled the inspo from. I've always liked more skull-like head designs and it was new for me.

this one i thought about asymmetrical horns and remembered that guy from Spyro because im pretty sure the spyro remake had just come out recently. I also think he was the general inspiration for Kai?

and this one i really liked the huge scales on his neck and wanted to replicate that on the shoulders. The chest part I originally was going to take entirely and have something through his chest but realized it'd be a pain to draw everytime, so i just put a large scar originally.

From there once i put the giant scales on his shoulders i thought they looked like large leaves so i went with a forest theme and made the horns wood, which then clashed with the skull so i made that wood also. and with the scar, i thought about the wood parts and made some roots come from it.

Other miscellaneous things:

I love things floating over my characters heads for some reason, and thus the orb

originally a moon, i made the horns freeze over near it to show a temperature drop

i added water between the horns sort of like rivers

i later added white spots to the horns to pull from the white wood horns on the sides

the clothes were just a combination of fantasy outfits i like

the fur/hair reminds me of clouds

When it comes to making refsheets I always try to keep them loose and kind of simple because they're mostly just there for people to get an idea of what i want. A good example of what i mean is the first image where i told the artist they basically had free reign just follow the refsheet as closely as they need and simplify it if they need to.

I also try to only use flat colors because it makes it more accurate later on when other artists are picking colors from it. in Kai's case specifically, i used gradients because.....i just wanted to try it lol.

but yeah if you have specific characters you want to ask about, absolutely go for it i love talking about stuff like this

You have no idea about the can of worms you just opened-

Truthfully; a lot! I take inspiration from everything and everything. That's what artists do :) but there's a very very long list of books and shows and movies I've watched/read that have stuck with me.

As a child I had a weird bunch of VHS tapes, video games, and books. Mom and Dad was a comic collectors, and dad was a musician so I got a lot of interesting songs too. Some notable bangers are: Yellow Submarine (the animated movie), the sonic movie, a few episodes of Pokemon (the one I remember most is the island of giant pokemon and when Pikachu gets ramen), and Spyro. I also watched a fair share of Disney and Pixar, Bug's Life and Nightmare Before Christmas being my favorite.

Sonic is definitely what I remember drawing the most, tbh. My first OCs were fan children! But animation was my absolute favorite thing ever, and I wanted to draw so good-

Once I was in my early to late teens, I got my fingers on the Internet, (and learned to pirate) my horizons broadened! My favorite artist at the time made a comic called Random Doom, a slice of life comic about their gen 4 team, and I literally would not be here today without them. They have no idea I exist and I'm happy with that. I haven't followed them in years but I remember them fondly. Another big artist I followed (and still do!) is Bechnokid! Her art is such an inspiration to me, even now! I want to steal it and put it in my mouth

Other notable things: the first two how to train your dragons, glass animals, Spiderverse, Cartoon Saloon, You Are Umasou, Indie Horror projects too long to list, Don't Starve, Lord of the Rings, old fairy tales, MegaMan (especially the Mangas drawn by Hitoshi Ariga), Steven Universe, the original Teen titans, Avatar the last Airbender, Bobs Burgers, Futurama, and honestly probably so so so so much-

Replayed through the TLOS trilogy and it awoke a deep need to draw dragons in my brain crazy style. anyways the old designs are fun and i love them but i wanted to take my own spin on some! and then it quickly devolved. picking up pieces and putting together an AU for funsies, i wanna give every character a new design, not every one is going to be as in depth as this one, but we'll see! ANYWAYS ENOUGH RAMBLING heres some thought process on his design (and also sparxs)

Spyros first element is fire, so i feel like he would reflect it a lot in his body and colors, i think personally, he goes on to master fire first in honor of Ignitus!! why is he fuzzy? FIRE MOTIFS!! hes SOOO full of these, and eclipse motifs, his eyes also change after the first game, its slight but its there!! Theming the purples dragons off of space too because its sooo tasty

HE HAS BOTH WINGS AS AN ADULT!! they just dont change from the teen version, so i thought it was unnecessary to draw it LOL

I was so excited to FINALLY after like. 10 years ive been able to design an adult form for spyro, but i was mega stumped on it (still am tbh. there will be changes LOL) but who needed a redesign most? SPARX. hes literally just a flying man. horrible but its so funny to look back at him hes SO UGLYYYYY so i had to do something about it. hes mantis/wasp/firefly inspired :)

OC-tober Day 19: Inspiration

TLoSpyro series (specifically Dawn of the Dragon) was one of my biggest initial inspirations for Skyler. In fact, she was originally a Spyro character! I think her original concept was supposed to be a sibling of Spyro...

The first title I came up with for her story was going to be The Legend of Skyler.... augh. It went through like three or four iterations before I settled on the name Vitaernum for it. The name is based on an ancient dragon language from its lore, roughly meaning "everlasting life."

LF Multi-Para Roleplay Partners!

I havent ever really used tumblr but I've been roleplaying for around 10 years now maybe more actually and I want partners ;-; I'm 3rd person, write 3-5 paras per character per reply and into a lot of fandoms. I love writing OCs in Fandom worlds and doing non-canon OC plots. But some Fandoms I do enjoy CC. Romance, Dark vibes, sci fi, fantasy, mystery, etc. I started out on facebook as Shadow the Hedgehog using one liner script style and I've come a long way since then lol Fandoms I enjoy include: Sonic, Batman, Doctor Who, My Hero Academia, Disney but I have a v specific idea for it, kinda like Once Upon a Time/Dreamlight vibes but darker and more mystery inspired, Gravity Falls, Fairy Tail, Spyro, Zelda, Marvel, Pokemon, Digimon, Maybe Horizon Zero Dawn, and more I'm forgetting. I usually play male mains tho can do female sides. I prefer to Rp against female characters and love romance! Tho I do have some queer characters, I just am not queer myself so I tend to gravitate to cishet pairings. Anyway! I just realized I never posted my dragon fella Tobin here. So I will.

Tobin is a glassblower, inspired by the Artisan elder dragons from Spyro Reignited. He’s probably closest to Devlin in design, but he was probably my most involved character design project I’ve ever done. I don’t have too many OCs of my own, but Tobin took about a month of work to get figured out, not counting any small changes since. He’s got a light, fluffy disposition, and I haven’t drawn him in a good while. I did play a DND campaign for a bit with him as an artificer too. But here’s some of my older work of him. The friends in the group pic belong to @dernooks, @guavanzo and @kalapatiman

I created a new OC a while ago. He is inspired by my Caracal I made in Path of Titans (there is a mod for that...in a dinosaur game. Welp) Named the in-game one Bakari after a dragon from Spyro 1, because I tend to give my PoT characters Spyro dragon names since I can't think of names otherwise Later researched the name a bit and found out it means "baker" in some languages, so I made him a baker and cook.

gotta tell about the kibaguri brain worm i have… green and raihan were around 19 i think when kibaguri was real. at that time raihan had not yet considered that he could continue to be leon's biggest challenger, but green did inspire him. and he only had 5 followers, one of them being his mom. green becomes one of the first followers of him! :) still following raihan to this day, they are on good terms. green is enamored by raihans history knowledge and passion for fashion but also the spyro the dragon ocs geeky preteen raihan spent all his time drawing (while leon and sonia were having very deep angst about feeling like they are drifting apart) that he kind of accidentally showed green but just went with it anyways. they make out
