Beyond the Pint: A World of Handcrafted Ice Cream Delights
In the scorching heat of summer, few things hold the power to bring a smile quite like a refreshing scoop of ice cream. But for true ice cream aficionados, the supermarket freezer aisle with its rows of mass-produced pints simply won't do. They crave something more – a world of handcrafted ice cream delights, bursting with flavor, innovation, and a touch of magic.
A Spoonful of Tradition: What is Handcrafted Ice Cream? Handcrafted ice cream, also known as artisan ice cream, is a departure from the commercially produced varieties we're accustomed to. It's a return to the roots of ice cream making, a process steeped in tradition and meticulous attention to detail.
Here are some key characteristics that differentiate handcrafted ice cream from its mass-produced counterparts:
Small-Batch Production: Handcrafted ice cream is made in small batches, often using time-tested methods. This allows for greater control over the ingredients and the resulting flavor profile. Premium Ingredients: Artisan ice cream makers prioritize quality over quantity. They use fresh, high-quality ingredients like real fruits, locally sourced dairy products, and premium chocolates. Unique Flavors: Forget the predictable vanilla and chocolate. Handcrafted ice cream embraces creativity, offering an explosion of unique and often seasonal flavor combinations. Think lavender honey, salted caramel chai, or even smoked paprika chocolate! The Human Touch: The process of making handcrafted ice cream is often a labor of love. Skilled artisans meticulously combine ingredients, churn the mixture to perfection, and pay close attention to every detail. Beyond the Price Tag: Why Artisan Ice Cream Costs More While the price tag of handcrafted ice cream might be higher than its mass-produced counterparts, there's a reason for that. Here's a breakdown of the factors contributing to the cost:
Quality Ingredients: Artisan ice cream makers prioritize sourcing high-quality ingredients, often from local farms and producers. These premium ingredients naturally come at a higher cost. Small-Scale Production: Large-scale ice cream manufacturers benefit from economies of scale, which keeps their production costs lower. Handcrafted ice cream, made in smaller batches, doesn't enjoy the same cost advantages. The Art of Ice Cream Making: The process of making handcrafted ice cream requires skill and experience. Artisan ice cream makers are passionate about their craft, and their expertise is reflected in the final product. Think of it this way: You're not just paying for ice cream; you're paying for a delicious experience crafted with care and dedication.
Unveiling the Secrets: Handcrafted Ice Cream Recipes The beauty of handcrafted ice cream lies in its endless possibilities. Unlike commercially produced varieties with a set formula, artisan ice cream recipes are often works of art, constantly evolving and adapting. However, some basic principles are common:
The Base: The foundation of handcrafted ice cream is typically a custard base made with eggs, milk, cream, and sugar. Some recipes may use a simpler base of just milk, cream, and sugar. Flavor Inspiration: From classic vanilla to adventurous concoctions, flavor possibilities are endless. Fruits, spices, herbs, chocolates, nuts, and even alcoholic beverages can be incorporated into the base or swirled in as inclusions. The Churn: Traditional methods involve hand-churning the ice cream mixture, which is a laborious but rewarding process. Modern artisan ice cream makers typically utilize electric ice cream churns that mimic the slow churning motion, ensuring a smooth and creamy texture. Here's a glimpse into the world of handcrafted ice cream recipes:
Classic Vanilla Bean: This timeless flavor showcases the quality of the ingredients. Fresh vanilla bean pods infuse the base with a deep, aromatic vanilla flavor. Salted Caramel Swirl: This delightful combination features a rich caramel base with ribbons of sea salt caramel swirled throughout, creating a delightful sweet and salty dance on the palate. Strawberry Balsamic: Fresh strawberries are incorporated into the base, while a touch of balsamic vinegar adds a surprising depth of flavor and complexity. Spicy Mexican Chocolate: This decadent ice cream features dark chocolate infused with chili peppers, creating a unique and exciting flavor experience. Remember: These are just a few examples. The world of handcrafted ice cream recipes is vast and ever-evolving, waiting to be explored.
A Symphony of Flavors: A Look at Handcrafted Ice Cream Delights
Picking up from where we left off, let's delve deeper into the world of handcrafted ice cream flavors:
Local Inspiration: Artisan ice cream makers often take inspiration from their local landscapes and ingredients. This could be a lavender honey ice cream in Provence, France, or a prickly pear sorbet reflecting the desert flavors of Arizona. Global Influences: The world is your oyster! Handcrafted ice cream embraces international flavors, from Thai coconut curry to Mexican spiced mango. Boozy Delights: For the adults in the room, some artisan ice cream makers incorporate alcohol into their creations. Think dark chocolate stout ice cream or a refreshing prosecco sorbet. The Unexpected Twist: Don't be surprised to find unique and unexpected flavor combinations. Imagine a savory-sweet parmesan fig ice cream or a floral rosewater pistachio. Beyond the Flavor: Handcrafted ice cream isn't just about taste; it's an experience for all senses. Artisans often incorporate visual elements with vibrant colors and creative toppings made from scratch. Imagine edible flower petals adorning a lavender honey ice cream or candied violets gracing a dark chocolate sorbet.
The Quest for the Perfect Scoop: Where to Find Handcrafted Ice Cream The good news is that handcrafted ice cream is becoming increasingly accessible. Here are some ways to find these delicious treats:
Local Ice Cream Shops: Many cities boast independent ice cream shops dedicated to the art of handcrafted ice cream. These shops often offer a variety of flavors to choose from, allowing you to sample and discover your favorites. Farmers Markets: Look for local farms or dairies that might offer handcrafted ice cream made with their fresh milk and cream. This is a great way to support local businesses and enjoy hyper-local ingredients. Online Retailers: Some artisan ice cream makers now ship their creations nationwide. This allows you to experience the magic of handcrafted ice cream even if you don't live near a dedicated shop.
The Final Indulgence: Why Choose Handcrafted Ice Cream?
Handcrafted ice cream is more than just a dessert; it's an experience. It's a chance to savor the quality of fresh ingredients, appreciate the artistry of skilled ice cream makers, and embark on a flavor adventure beyond the ordinary. It's a reminder that sometimes, slowing down and indulging in something truly special is a reward worth seeking.
So next time you crave a scoop of ice cream, ditch the mass-produced pint and seek out the world of handcrafted delights. Your taste buds (and your soul) will thank you!

September, 2003 - Perth, Australia
"Mum, it's so obvious she doesn't want me there!" You whined. Your mother was haphazardly chucking a soccer ball in a birthday bag, arranging the blue paper around it so it was semi-presentable. Bless her, but you knew Sam wouldn't care for the wrapping.
She had awkwardly handed you a party invitation after school that day as you plucked your bags off the racks.
"My mum said I had to invite a girl to come, sorry. There's good cake, though. It's ice cream."
She ran off almost as fast as she appeared, leaving you outside your Year 4 class alone. Why you? You weren't sporty at all, she could've at least invited one of the netball girls - they were always picking Sam for their teams, too. You were the anti-Sam, spending lunch with a small group of girls playing hopscotch and batting your eyes for the teacher's approval.
Black marker in your hand, you scribbled down a messy "happy birthday, Sammy K" in one of the white spaces on the ball. Your mum had taken you to Big W to choose one after school immediately after, given the late notice. You held it back, admiring your work. Would a heart be appropriate?
Yes.
You only turn 10 once, right? You added it front and centre on the ball, writing your name in the middle so she knew who it was from (though, she could probably tell a tween boy didn't make such an effort).
The party was, as expected, all boys. Sam's mother had greeted you warmly at the door, ushering you in with a comforting (and almost apologetic smile). Sam ran over excitedly to grab the gift bag off you, grabbing your arm to pull you over to the snacks table. You were introduced to all the other boys there, most of whom you knew from school.
You smiled shyly at all of them, spending most of the time sitting on the folded chairs outside while nibbling on some fairy bread and praying your mum would come get you. Sam ran around with the boys all afternoon, leaving you all alone with your thoughts. As it turned out, you had gotten the wrong type of football for Sam. You felt guilty for rushing at the shops, but Sam had hid the disappointment well, even complimenting your handwriting.
As the day came to an end, you were joined by Isaac. He was a friend of Sam's from an outside sports league, but had forgotten his asthma puffer and had to call it after two hours of straight footy. You talked most of the afternoon, complaining about your random 10 year old problems. You couldn't help noticing the way Sam came to talk to you more when she noticed Isaac there.
She probably just felt bad, you thought.
October, 2007 - Perth, Australia
Things had blossomed with Isaac. You remained friends for a few years, which eventually grew into something more romantic. He was your first boyfriend, and unfortunately your first love.
You were both invited to a party up in the hills. He had begged you to go, having become engrossed in the rumours of cruisers and beers being supplied by who-fucking-care's older brother. You had little interest, but his incessant nagging was beginning to piss you off, so you agreed.
Unfortunately as you both matured, Isaac changed. He was egotistical and big-headed, busy with AFL and making crude comments when he thought you weren't listening. It was hard not to see him in a different light, but sometimes you were offered a small glimpse at the small, sweet boy who sat out of breath next to you at the party.
You tugged on the hem of the sort black dress you were wearing, trying desperately hard to pull it further down your thigh. Isaac suggested "something sexy" for the party, much to your disagreement. You relented, and were now regretting it as you faced the chilly atmosphere of Perth's spring. He showed little interest in you while you sat next to him in on the couch, only passing you a beer and whispering "don't be lame" in your ear. Safe to say, the party kinda sucked.
You considered telling him you were going out front for air, but the way he was basically eye-fucking Karen Davies made you think twice. You wandered outside with teary eyes, Corona bottle in your hand as you breezed through the crowd of sweaty teenagers.
"Y/N?"
You turned, face to face with... Sam? She was older now, with slightly longer hair down to her shoulders and dressed in an oversized hoodie. Why was she giving you butterflies?
"Hey Sam," your voice came, "Sorry, just getting some air."
"Mind if I join?"
You motioned wordlessly for her to follow, her hand placed lightly on the small of your back as you navigated the halls to the front yard. God, you were so glad she couldn't see the red hot blush that painted your cheeks.
The two of you found yourselves sitting on the curb, legs stretched lazily out into the street.
"So Isaac's a dick now, 'ey?"
It was so nonchalant that it barely seemed hostile, Sam just took another swig from her bottle, grumbling when she noticed it was empty.
"You also don't have to drink the rest of that, you know? Doesn't make you lame or whatever."
You silently passed her the bottle, expecting for her to just chuck in a bin when she passed one next. However, she downed it in one go.
"Dickhead! I thought you were gonna throw it out! What if I wanted that later?" You laughed, playfully attempting to shove her off the curb. She only giggled in response, lightly shoving you back.
"Hey, I never got to say thanks for that soccer ball all those years ago," she started, "I actually play now. Mum 'n dad made me stop AFL, all the guys are bigger than me. But I actually really like soccer, your ball was the one I first used." She looked almost embarrassed confessing it, a small blush spreading across her face.
"Oh god, I remember that. Sorry, I think I scribbled all over it."
"Nah, it's cute- It's cool, sorry. It's cool, I liked it." She stammered, getting what looked like progressively more and more red.
"What are you up to now?" She said, awkwardly trying to change the subject.
"Oh I dunno, not much. Studying a lot, really. Isaac's been so odd lately so it's usually just me... It'd be cool to be a doctor, I think."
She looked up, eyebrows raised.
"No way! I always knew you'd do something like that, you were such a teacher's pet in primary school... The smartest, most nerdiest one there." She was back to her playful teasing now, and you found yourself slightly wishing that she'd flirt like this more.
What about Isaac? Were you a bad person? Why was Sam making you feel like this? Your head was starting to spin aggressively, the alcohol taking it's toll on your slight, 15 year old self. Sam grabbed your arm, rushing to hold back your hair as you crawled over to a bush, puking all over it. You felt too sick to be embarrassed.
Most of what you remember was her putting you in a taxi and slipping her phone number in your pocket. The next morning, you made sure to find the little note and stick it to your wall, staring longingly at the message written on it.
"Let's be friends - Sammy K"
You also broke up with Isaac.

December, 2016 - Perth, Australia
She was always on your mind, but could she say the same of you? You and Sam had gotten so much closer over the years, texting 24/7 when either of you had the chance. She was returning back for Christmas and you were on your way to pick her up from the airport, helping to surprise to her family.
You hadn't been able to date properly since that conversation with Sam on the curb. Nobody else made your heart skip a beat like she did, and you found yourself yearning to feel her touch once again, even if it was brief. You didn't care. You comforted her when she went through her first serious break up, and she would stay on call for hours while you broke down about the pressures of med school. It felt like there was something pulling the two of you together, and god, you hoped she felt it too.
Standing at the International Arrivals gate was nerve-racking. Every flurry of passengers sent your nerves flying, eyes anxiously darting from person to person as you picked at your nails in anticipation. You were so nervous, you almost missed her.
She was finally here.
Her short hair was tied back, and the dark rings under her eyes proved how drained she was from the flight. She lugged a large, black suitcase with her, looking around until her eyes met yours.
You both rushed forward. She engulfed you in a warm hug that felt like... home?
No words were shared as you stood there in each other's embrace.
The car ride to Sam's house was comfortably silent, but you couldn't help but notice how Sam's hand had come to rest on your leg as you drove. It felt like it was on fire, but she didn't acknowledge it, sunglasses over her eyes as she looked tiredly out her window.
You were probably just reading into things, Sam admitted once that she's a really touchy person. You didn't want to lead yourself on.
Sam's family had invited you inside for the celebrations, surrounding you with all sorts of questions about schooling and your life. In a quiet moment, it was just you and her mother alone on the couch. Her siblings and dad were outside chatting at the barbecue, with the two of you remaining inside to escape the heat.
"She loves you, you know," her mother said matter-of-factly, "you love her too."
"Excuse me? I swear I-"
"Oh, don't be silly." She replied, leaning to hold your hand.
"That girl looks at you like you hung the stars. I get so many calls of Y/N this... Y/N that... She's besotted."
"I- I don't know what to say," you said, holding back the tears that threatened to spill, "was it that obvious?"
"Oh, no no. Don't worry. Us mother's have a way with things. Don't think yours doesn't see it too."
You laughed, raising your head to meet your eye. She released your hands, patting you on the knee as she walked off at the same time Sam conveniently entered. Nice one, Roxy.
"God... do you remember that birthday party I had?" She laughed, coming to sit next to you. She stretched her arms over the top of the couch, her fingertips only inches from where you were currently resting.
"How could I forget? Hey guys, this is Y/N that doesn't play footy - isn't that how you introduced me?"
She just laughed at your mock offence, small apologies leaving her mouth as she reminisced.
"I mean, it wasn't a lie."
"Oh fuck off, Kerr." You shoved her lightly, watching as her hand came to her chest to feign offence. You both fell quiet, meeting each other's eyes in a once again comfortable silence.
"Why me?"
Sam looked taken aback, her eyes down as she searched for an answer.
"Why not you?" She said, looking up. You could tell the mood had shifted as her eyes met yours, a hint of vulnerability across her face.
"I think... I think I always knew it was you."
"Sam-"
"No," she spoke softly, her hand coming to hold yours, "Just let me finish?"
You nodded.
"I can't really explain it, but there's just this pull. It feels like I can't stay away, you know? We always found a way back to each other, even after all these years. It's just- It's just always you"
The tears that were threatening to spill finally did as you pulled her close. You could taste the salty tears that left both your eyes as your lips met hers, a soft kiss that felt like it lasted a lifetime. Her hands came to hold the sides of your face, deepening the kiss until you were gasping for breath. Reluctantly, you pulled away and rested your forehead against hers.
"I think I love you, Y/N."
"I think I love you too, Sam."
July 14th, 2020 - London to Perth
"Have you got your comfy shoes, babe?"
A small "fuck!" echoed from your shared bedroom as your girlfriend scrambled to fish her shoes out from whatever pile she had thrown them in. Standing by the door, you watched as she stumbled forward and pulled her socks on, almost knocking over several pot plants as she did so. At 3am in the morning, she was not exactly a vision of grace and elegance.
The two of you had bounced around countries as Sam switched clubs, settling in the UK as she signed a contact with Chelsea. Your medical degree allowed a job almost anywhere and so you quickly found work at a nearby children's hospital, much to Sam's delight.
At the moment though, you were saying goodbye to your London apartment as you jetted back to your hometown. As far as you knew, there was no specific reason to be returning home, with Sam citing homesickness. You thought it suspicious as she was there only two months ago, but never bothered questioning it. You both missed Australia and eventually planned on moving back, but for now you were happy living a busy life in the UK.
Sam always had a thing about planes, as you came to learn. She was ok when they were completely in the air, always able to distract herself with some form of tv or movie (or sleeping pills), but you could tell by the way her knee was bouncing that this time would be no different.
"Hey, it's alright", you said, palm reaching across to settle her, "we'll be ok, these things are freaky safe now."
"I know. Logically I know it's fine but I just... I can't help it"
You only sighed, kissing her cheek and taking her hand in yours. The safety video played on the screens in front of you as you pulled her head to your shoulder, stroking her hair. Her body relaxed into yours as her breathing steadied, and you could feel her racing heart start finally slowing down.
She was drowsy from the early wake up and easily fell into a peaceful slumber. You prayed for no turbulence, admiring the few freckles and lines that were littered across her perfect face. She needed the rest, having been so anxious about this trip and her upcoming tournaments that the stress had almost permanently darkened under her eyes.
With her hand in yours, you soon followed her in sleep.
July 17th, 2020 - Perth, Australia
"I need to shake off the jetlag, wanna go for a walk?"
You turned suddenly as she called from the bathroom, walking out and drying her hair.
"Mum said they redid the park up the road, good field for soccer... We can practice some more if you'd like?" She asked, almost nervously. You had requested Sam start teaching you more about the game; a role she took very seriously. She was showing you all the tricks she'd learnt, even trying her hardest not to laugh when you fell flat on your ass several times in a row.
The two of you set off just before golden hour, navigating the streets of Fremantle to the park. Sam's hand was in yours the whole time, the other holding the soccer ball close to her hip - she was being so protective other the goddamn thing.
"I'll stand here, we'll just go back and forth until you get your confidence up."
She was taking several steps back away from you, positioning the ball at her feet before kicking it towards you.
"You know this is the one you gave me, right?"
You kicked it back, reciprocating.
"God, you're such a sap... Love you for it, though." She only laughed, winking as she did so. Even after 4 years, she still made you blush like you were 15.
The both of you continued, going though the motions until Sam decided to give it a forceful kick, landing it far behind you.
"Hey! What was that for?"
"Sorry, love. Rules of the game; she who missed must go fetch."
"That's not even- Oh, whatever"
You ran off as Sam followed behind you - why was she moving from her spot? That's when you noticed it.
"Hey dummy, this isn't even the ball I gave you - I used black maker on mine." You jokingly shouted back, picking it up to hold it by your side. "Got some fangirl groupies to replace me, huh? Can't believe you thought I used red marker."
She stood a few metres away from you, a small smirk on her face.
"Why don't you read it then, genius?"
You looked down, confused. What was she playing at?
Marry me?
It was written neatly in red marker, a giant heart below it - just like the one you first gifted Sam at her party all those years ago. You looked up, only to be met with the sight of Sam on one knee in front of you, a small blue box in her hands.
"Well?"
She had tears in her eyes, but her smirk remained.
You were still speechless, the red words echoing in your brain. She wanted you to marry her. She wanted you to be her wife. You sank to your knees to be level with her, gently grabbing her face to pull her in for a kiss.
You could feel her smiling against your lips, sliding the ring on your finger wordlessly as your mouth met hers.

March 3 - 9: Spring Break
Spring break mode: activated! Stiles and Derek are ready to make some unforgettable memories. The plan? Maybe a road trip through the scenic routes of California. Or maybe they spend the week in a cabin in the woods, surrounded by nature's serenity. They could go hiking, take long walks, and at night, gather around a campfire, share stories, or just enjoy the peacefulness. It's all about stepping away from the usual hustle and bustle and reconnecting with each other and the great outdoors.
March 10 - 16: Ice Cream Crawl
What better way to beat the heat and stress of their supernatural lives than an ice cream crawl? Maybe Derek and Stiles spend their day hitting up different ice cream shops across Beacon Hills as they hunt for the most mouth-watering flavors. Or maybe they venture out of town, finding secret spots and hole-in-the-wall parlors, sampling the eclectic mix of frozen delights from vendors who boast an array of international and exotic ingredients. Either way, they're sure to map out a route that would make any sweet tooth swoon.
March 17 - 23: Beach
It’s time to ditch the winter blues and bring on the ultimate beach parties. Perhaps Derek and Stiles decide to make the most of their day building sandcastles together, or maybe they go for a swim and try boogie boarding? They could walk along the shore and collect unique seashells or relax on their beach towels and soak up the sun. Wherever you take Stiles and Derek this spring, they’re sure to be excited for their beach adventure, enjoying the sun, sand, and waves.
March 24 - 30: Picnic Anywhere
With Spring comes lush, vibrant landscapes filled with new life…and ants. There’s sun-warmed skin along with sweet fragrant flowers blooming, which means it’s time to have some Spring fun! Perhaps Stiles and Derek are having a picnic at the newly rebuilt Hale house, or are enjoying a meadow speckled with wildflowers in the preserve. It could be perfect or a complete disaster if it’s interrupted by Spring showers. Only you can share with us where Stiles and Derek are having picnics this Spring!
March 31 - April 6: Spring Harvest Festival
Spring has arrived and it’s time to enjoy all the local harvest festivals have to offer! Maybe Stiles and Derek visit a local farmers market to check out the produce for the season, or they run a table or booth there. Perhaps Stiles and Derek are taking Eli to an Easter egg hunt with all the pack kids during a spring festival. There are so many options, including games, food, crafts, and anything else you can imagine that can be enjoyed during a Spring Festival! Show us what Stiles and Derek are doing this Spring!

real prompt. the wha gang all going to get like ice cream or something together
Canonverse bc the idea of wolf!eunie helping kick around a little ice cream maker was too good to pass up.
Coco LOVES summer, only a little more than she loves the other seasons. Winter has snow, which is delightful, and rain in spring and crunchy colorful leaves in fall.
But in summer, the sky is bright all day long, and Coco gets to swim in the magic lake as long as she wants on the days her mom doesn’t need her in the shop. There are festivals in town with magical treats, and fireflies in the hills.
Only now it is summer, and there’s none of that. There’s no mom, no shop, and even though she could ask Professor Qifrey to take to see the pond and the fireflies, it’s not the same. It won’t ever be the same again.
She loves magic, of course— she just misses it. Everything else.
Coco only mentions this, while they’re all— her and Agott and Richeh and Tetia— sitting outside. Tetia is saying something about how it’s SO hot, and they should go somewhere, do something, maybe visit Eunie— she likes summer, only it’s boiling!
So Coco says, a bit wistfully, that when it was this hot out she used to go swimming, and— misses it.
“Liliphin used to take Richeh for sweet ice,” Richeh says. “It wasn’t ever this warm in the great hall, though.”
“I bet Professor Qifrey knows how to make sweet ice!” Tetia says.
“We should invite Eunie and Alaira,” Richeh says.
Professor Qifrey does know how to make sweet ice.
“Agott, go see if Olruggio will bring his searneedle and a metal jar, he’ll like this.” Qifrey says. He pulls out one of the big canisters that the farmer up the road drivers milk in. It’s empty— last month’s, cleaned out, ready to give back. “Girls, watch, here’s how you can make ice.”
Qifrey demonstrates the seal— like the seal to make a little ball of fire, only different because it makes cold!! So cool!! And then he takes one of the vapourbubbles and pours water over it, which instantly solidifies, which is just SO cool!!
“Be very careful with this seal,” he says to them. “Don’t hold your hand above it, it can make you so cold it hurts. Just like fire, okay?”
They all nod, and Agott comes back with Olruggio in tow.
“Oh, sweet ice,” Olruggio says. “Are you going to use real ice for this or do you want me to make something?”
“Would you? Thanks,” Qifrey says. “I was thinking half ice and half stones, if you don’t mind.”
Olruggio rolls his eyes, and then gestures to Tetia. “Here, draw me your sand spell, and we’ll put it in the bottom of this bucket. We want to have the sand stay cold, but we don’t want all the ice to freeze together, got it?”
“Uh-huh!”
Coco is given the job of measuring out careful cupfuls of sugar and cream and fruits, and putting all of them into Olruggio’s metal jar, eight cupfuls of cream to one cupful of sugar. Agott helps. Qifrey directs Richeh to draw cooling spells directly onto the big metal can with the searneedle— carefully!— and Tetia and Olruggio work on their cold sand.
Eunie and Alaira show up just in time to help move the big metal canister outside— it’s only a little bit cold to the touch, but it’s big and unwieldy, even if it’s not that heavy.
It rolls a little, on the ground.
“Now,” Qifrey says, “You have to roll it around. When it starts to get thick, bring it back.”
“Okay!”
They take turns kicking the can, and then Agott thinks to fly with it up a hill and push it from the top, so that it bumps back down, so they take turns doing that. Eunie doesn’t have soarshoes, so he turns into the scalewolf and drags it up the hill like that, and then just grabs it in his mouth and runs while they chase him. Then they kick it to each other for a while, until they start to get tired.
When Qifrey opens the lid, it’s still cold inside, the sand and ice a weird sort-of slurry. But the inner jar is okay, cold and, when they open it up too, sweet.
It’s not the pond, and it’s not fireflies and festivals either. But maybe, Coco thinks, it’s good too.

Another whirlwind day at the parks. We only do two full days at Disneyland because we have a specific plan for what we want to do, and we always have the mindset of rolling with the punches and having contingency plans when things don't go to plan.
Yes, technically I am a Disney adult, aka a millenial or Gen-Xer with a decent amount of disposable income and a slight obsession with Disney. I know what to do, I plan ahead, I watch a lot of Disney Park Youtubers, I know what to do and where to go and how to maximize my time in the parks, all without spending anything extra on Lightning Lanes or Genie +.
You may ask, what's your secret? I say, I try to go with the flow.
We don't rope drop anymore. The last time we did was for the opening of Rise of the resistance, the Star Wars ride in Galaxy's Edge. The virtual queue required guests to physically be in the parks to use the app. Thankfully that's not required anymore. So, our usual plan is to get up at around 8am and grab the free breakfast offered by the hotel before it shuts down at 9:30. Then we wander into the park and check on stand-by wait times and if anything is under 30 minutes, we consider riding it.
This morning, we started at California Adventure, looking in the shops for all the new anniversary merch. I wish there were more Oswald the Lucky Rabbit stuff in general, though his ear hats were available. But I don't wear ear hats or ear bands at the parks. I did more searching of 100th anniversary medallions. One of the shops on Buena Vista Street had a kiosk so I bought its collection of 4, Steamboat Willie Mickey, classic Minnie, Oswald, and an image of the DCA Walt and Mickey statue.
Wandered into Cars Land and did Mater and Luigi's rides. We don't usually do Radiator Springs Racers anymore since the queue never really goes under an hour. We had a reservation at Lamplight Lounge for lunch, but we managed to squeeze in Toy Story Midway Mania before our check-in time arrived. It's been a while since I'd played, my arm got sore. I always seem to get the beaver prize for this ride.
Lamplight Lounge was just as tasty and filling as ever. We ordered steak nachos and the brussel sprout Caesar salad to share while we watched folks get launched at the Incredicoaster. Fun!
I even managed to get into the virtual queue for Runaway Railway again, at the expense of our poor server who had to repeat herself because I was too distracted by my attempt. Checked at 1pm for a 6:30pm return time. I didn't care, though because I got in!
Got stuck on the Little Mermaid ride for a surprising amount of time, right when your seashell eases down that short hill as you go "under the sea". It was long enough that my back was starting to ache from the pressure of leaning backwards. I am old.
Park hopped back to Disneyland, did Autopia and Mr. Toad again, browsed through the shops. I had a healthy amount of redemption dollars from my Disney Visa card, and I was hell-bent on getting souvenirs. In addtion to the 100th anniversary medallions, I picked up a couple of new pins, Mr. Toad in his Motor Car and Fix-it Felix and Wreck-it Ralph. Also paid for a few snacks on the points as well. Ice cream for J. and a pickle for me. Yes, I said pickle. I love the Disneyland pickles. Highly recommended if you're a pickle fan. And I am.
It was started to get really really cold and I wasn't wearing enough layers and I was considering giving up on getting on Runaway Railway and just head back to the hotel room to rest before the 9pm World of Color showing. But as we were settling into the room I got an alert saying that my boarding group for Runaway Railway was being called and I had an hour to get in line for the ride. I'm so glad I opted for a hotel across the street because we got back in record time and we were able to ride Runaway Railway again!
After that, we went back to DCA for World of Color. Had a hot link corn dog for dinner while we waited. The new WOC show is special for the 100th anniversary of the Disney company, and it's meant to show how even one person can change the course of things. It started with Walt and then every other Disney character featured sure had the HERO'S JOURNEY thing going on. I liked it, though not as much as the OG WOC show.
By the end of the night, I was freezing, I couldn't feel my fingers, so we called an end to our Disneyland adventure and headed back to the hotel room, where I had a nice long warm soak in the bathtub and started to feel human again. It got to the point where my fingers didn't have fine motor control and I got a glimpse of my future when I will be old and unable to unbutton pants without struggling. Yikes.
So, checking out of the hotel tomorrow morning, will grab breakfast and will hopefully be able to check in early at the Marriott for Gally!
Onwards.

kuju flower park
If you've seen some of my past posts about flowers in Japan, you'll know that they don't mess around with flowers here. Japan is full of many huge and beautiful flower gardens that you can visit in the spring and summer. So in late April, my partner and I traveled to Kuju Flower Park in Oita prefecture, nestled between the Aso and Kuju mountains, to enjoy the many spring flowers in bloom.
According to Explore Kumamoto, the Kuju Flower Park is home to more than 3 million plants of 500 different varieties, covering 59 acres of land. The periods of blooming between flower species cycles in and out from March to November, so there are always blooming flowers to see no matter what time of year it is!
When we first entered the park, we visited a large field with various mixed colorful flowers in it. There were tracks between each section of flowers, so you could walk through them and be surrounded by the flowers.
I had dressed in a floral shirt for the occasion, so of course I had to take a picture next to the matching daisies.
They also had this cute photo spot where you could set up your phone with a timer.
In addition to the many outdoor flower gardens, there was also a greenhouse filled with various tropical plants and more flowers, including begonias and fuchsia shrubs. They also had some pretty decorative statues and another photo spot.
In the corner of the greenhouse, they also had a little spot to pull fortunes, maybe based on your birth month? I didn't try it, but it was in front of a beautiful statue, so it felt like a goddess watching over you as you drew your fortune.
Next we headed back outside to a huge field full of nemophila flowers, also known as baby blue eyes in America. You could again walk along tracks within the flowers to be in the middle of a sea of blue blossoms. When the weather is clear, you can see the Kuju mountains as a backdrop to the flowers for a breathtaking view.
From there we continued on to another section with many colorful poppies.
Nearby, we found another field of colorful linarias, commonly known as toadflax.
We headed up the hill next, passing the tulip fields, which had just passed their blooming window and had begun to wilt. I'm sad that we missed their full bloom, but some of the red ones were still very bright.
Lastly, we walked to the very outskirts of the park to look for the shibazakura, or moss phlox in English. We had just missed the blooming period on these as well, but there was still a tiny bit of color left to enjoy.
The park also had various shops and food stands to enjoy that sold local and organic goods. They also sold ice cream flavors like blueberry and lavender using the plants from the park. I didn't try any, but it was really popular and was a lovely color!
On our way out of the flower park, we found a friendly cat sitting by our car, so of course I gave him a few pats and took a picture.
As we drove away through the Aso mountains back to my partner's home in Kumamoto, we stumbled upon a strange place. It was filled in every direction with large hedge sculptures, most of them birds. They were placed on both sides of a big ravine and painted a very imposing picture.
There weren't any signs or tourist shops, just a field of these hedges on the side of the road, accompanied by a rusty shed and some deer, chickens, rabbits, and a goat kept in pens. It was so strange and fascinating. It seemed to me that somebody used the space for their hobby, but people could stop by and admire the sculptures if they liked.
Some of the sculptures had very obviously been given boobs or genetalia, so the artist had quite a sense of humor about his art.
There was even a sculpture in the distance made to look like the Nagasaki Peace Statue!
I found another friendly cat wandering around the grounds near the rabbits and chickens. I followed him to a box where he jumped up and laid down. Written on the box, it said you could buy food for the rabbits and cats by leaving it in the box. This smart little kitty led me over to the box to feed him. There was also a sign saying "looking for female goat," to be a companion for their other goat, which I thought was funny. What a strange and interesting place we found.
This day had an interesting ending, but of course it was a lot of fun to see all of the beautiful plants (and TWO cats)! Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoyed <3

If you closed your eyes
And couldn’t look at the greenness
Of the trees
You’d think you were in Autumn
Or early Spring, with the cold,
The wind and rain.
And the wind toys monstrously
With said foliage on the trees,
In thrashing brushstrokes as
You head up behind the supermarket.
Then onto the main road which
Veers upwards. One of the main
Hills of the city, at the cusp of the
South side.
From here you can see out across
Edinburgh. Way out – the stark
Erratic shapes of the volcano
In the East. All purple now in
The rain clogged skies.
On you go, up to the library.
Which is by the crossroads.
Which is always ferocious
With traffic. Across the road
There are a few small
Supermarkets and a betting
Shop. There’s also a tiny chapel.
You can’t tell whether it’s
Still in use anymore. Directly
Ahead of you is the Superbowl
Fish and Chip shop. With its
Tacky sign and greasy windows
And the metal stools inside,
The whole thing brimming with
A sense of oil and fat,
Even though it’s closed now.
It’s been here as long as you
Can remember, ever since
You were a boy.
And, if the chapel is discontinued
These days (which it probably
Is), it will be the longest-serving
Shop in this cluster of civilisation.
This really is the last stop in
Edinburgh’s south:
Walk five minutes beyond the
Superbowl
And you’re technically out of
The city.
But, you’re not going that way;
When you hop across the road
You turn right and then go into
The local library.
It’s a small place with a
Respectable sense of bravery.
There’s nobody in it aside from
A mother playing with her tot,
And the two librarians manning
The desk. You hand a book back in.
Then head over to the poetry
Section and get out this new
Book you’ve never heard of before,
And leave,
Back into the blustery street.
There is a Miner’s Club the other
Side of the road. With a big red
T hanging by the wall. The kind
Of joint you would never, ever
Go into.
You walk the other side of the hill
And descend that way.
It’s changed since you were
Last here.
There used to be an estate here,
With these brown crumbly
Flats. And, there are new flats
Here these days which only look
Different in that they’re slightly
Newer. The grass in their lower
Gardens is thick up to kneelength.
You pass a Polish shop.
And these dark memories of
Alcoholism go through your
Mind, when you used to drink
Those strong Polski piwo cans
Up in Aberdeen. They tasted
Awful and they were hardcore
Percentage wise … and you were
Sure glad those days were long
In the past. You come upon
Another building which looks
Like it might be another pub …
But when you near it, discover
An ice cream parlour, looking
About as out of place as anything
In the gnarly weather and
Surroundings.
Dotted either side of this main
Road are the semi-attached houses
Of the neighbourhood, in greys
And terracotta, with their hedges
Brimming in wet emerald, their
Streets narrow and secretive.
You get to the middle part of the hill,
Where the bridge goes over the valley
With its white paint rusting off,
And you take the gate off the
Road and into the valley park,
Where so many drivers have,
In the past, lobbed their cans and
Plastic or whatever off the bridge,
That the floor under the trees is
All filled with said junk.
As you head down the path the
Noise of the traffic wanders away.
You figure you’ll do some reading
As you walk – so take out that book
Of poetry from your bag, and
Open the pages, to see what’s up.

May 7th - Salt Lake City to Jackson Hole
My dear friend Lewis finds himself in a pickle. He has driven his Honda Civic, Stacey, all the way to Boise State for his first year of his MFA and now it is May! School is out! And home in DC is calling.
The practical and heartless could drive relentlessly from Boise to our Nation's capital, on-the-run-from-the-law style, in probably two days time. Three if it's more of a misdemeanor. However, there's a lot of America in the in between, and this seemed like a good excuse to taste that dust instead of just kicking it up.
Lewis saved me the pain of a very erratic layover schedule by meeting me in Salt Lake City, and picked me up at 12:30am in the spooky spaceship that is the new Salt Lake City Airport after I crossed a few moving-sidewalk switchbacks and crested baggage claim.
After a gentle snooze at Lewis's high school friend, Marcello's house in Layton, Utah--we deflated Stacey's tires a bit, carried a futon I slept on four doors down back to Marcello's father-in-law's porch, and I snapped a pic from Marcello's doorstep before we saddled in. Destination: Jackson Hole.
Weaving our way through the last of northern Utah, we tracked along the Wasatch range to avoid the boring void of the main highway.
Intending to visit a creamery Marcello claimed was worth the detour, we instead caught up on life and paid no mind to the ticking of the mile markers. I'm sure at some point we were meant to turn, but by the time we realized, we had come upon Cache Meadow Creamery off an Idaho road that jogged us into the state just before we were to enter Wyoming. Cache Meadow Creamery is in fact just an out-building with a locker to shove cash into--an honor system to indulge in $5 robin's blue chicken eggs, rolled butter, and home made ice cream.
One half pint of honor-system ice cream later, we scrabbled up, up, up the mountains.
We pointed wildly at icey-capped hills, signs for The Oregon Trail, The Pony Express, Pete's Pond and Recreational Facility. We stopped in Soda Springs to watch the local geyser spew sulfuric, carbonated water high into the air and let a loping Union Pacific train passing by hold us up for a while longer.
A good intermission for us to switch, complain about the cold, (It's May! And Snowing!) and truck upwards again. Jackson Hole lay only a little bit further on, and it was everything you'd expect a skiing town to be: sleepy locals glad another season has passed, art galleries with driftwood sculpted moose in full lope, a sickening fascination with antlers.
Perhaps The Silver Dollar Bar, an establishment in the basement of the Wort--a historical hotel--was the kind of honest retro joint you'd hope for in a sea of classic mountain resort town choreography. Big silver dollars embedded in polymer make for the counter that snake the corners of the dining room. Magenta light throws you in a 80s roller skating rink or a 50s drive-in tizzy even though you know from the menu this place was founded many decades before.
Lewis explains the science of the cryptic puzzle format and I eat a BLAT with cheese on it. We walk to the edge of town to obtain liquor as the bars, out of season, begin to shutter at 9pm. Snow pours and Lewis declares that it is December, as this is less upsetting a thought, and asks me about my Christmas shopping. We sleep to wake another day with an asphalt carpet lain before us--Medicine Bow awaits.

late spring (is it?)
I almost forgot that we're camping today when my mom woke me up. Had to go change my clothes quickly. Then the trip began.
When we go camping, for me, the camping starts from packing up things for the picnic. Even just changing your clothes is a part of this "fun". Especially I love the car ride (well not when it's too hot inside of the car and you're the only one awake) but usually, I love it.
Had some alone time after breakfast (erm, mind u, breakfast was at FUCKING 12, but it's fine). I climbed the hill, and reached this beautiful field of dandelions and other white flowers (don't know what these are called) and lied down there.
Well, my alone-time wasn't too long – soon I saw my bros with a volleyball and we decided to play. Our parents also came later. We did some photoshoot w my dad and then just laid down with my mom. Haven't really talked with her for a long time. We had a normal conversation? we discussed a lot actually)))
On the way back my uncle got me some halal drinks and ice cream, AND BTW he got me a cup and a journal for Eid (I don't know if I should start keeping like a real paper journal or no because I don't really know what to write there plus I don't want ppl to read it so hmmm)
And I really appreciate that we, women, were sitting inside a tent, but men were outside the whole time.... I hope they didn't get a sunburn, I tried praying outside and after 6mins my face was BURNING.
But the weather was just perfect and also there were butterflies flying everywhere...
~im in looove~
April, 11. 2024
oh wait ohhh noo I don't wanna go to graduation photoshoot tomorrow I wanna stay at home and finally do some Arabic (it's been FOUR DAYS since I last studied ಥ‿ಥ)
Also my clothing looks ugly and I don't have time and courage to go shopping....damn
Okay I mean who cares it's just a graduation photoshoot not a big deal (it is a big deal)
edit: nevermind the photoshoot - after taking some photos I realized I hate being on camera and wanted to go there just for fun and idk to spend some time w my friends (they all looked gorgeous).
And we got pizza with my brothers which was also fun (tho my little sister felt left our after that so we will get her new roller skates to cheer her up)
Apr 12-13, 2024.

March 3 - 9: Spring Break
Spring break mode: activated! Stiles and Derek are ready to make some unforgettable memories. The plan? Maybe a road trip through the scenic routes of California. Or maybe they spend the week in a cabin in the woods, surrounded by nature’s serenity. They could go hiking, take long walks, and at night, gather around a campfire, share stories, or just enjoy the peacefulness. It’s all about stepping away from the usual hustle and bustle and reconnecting with each other and the great outdoors.
Either way, they’re sure to map out a route that would make any sweet tooth swoon.

SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA VENDORS
Frederick’s Farm - Frederick has always been a household name in Bighorn Hills and his farm? Even more so. Ever so generous and kind, Frederick will have a petting zoo set up all week long and while he always accepts charitable donations, meeting and greeting with the animals is free of charge! Feel free to stop by, say hello, and meet some cute farm animals! Good Pets - The extravaganza isn’t just for humans! Good Pets has the chance for your furry friends to enjoy the season as well. From bandanas, to treats, to catnip blankets, they have it available all week long at their downtown vendor space. They’ll also be partnering with Barks and Recreation and showcasing some of the rescues adoptable dogs and cats each day of the festival! The Vinyl Countdown - Recently, the store has found itself overflowing with used and gently pre-owned vintage records. To make some space in their backroom, they’ll be set up during the festival with boxes of records for the city to choose from for just $5 a piece. 96.8 The Peak - The Keola & Mya in the Morning will have their coverage van strolling around downtown and at each of the daily events, reporting the ongoings to their viewers who are listening to the station. They will also be offering an opportunity to spin their wheel for a chance to win some free merch like t-shirts, drink tumblers, pens, and even a few $50 gift cards from local businesses such as Blooming Dale’s, The Burger Joint, and Room Service. Seek them out and test your luck to win something fun! The Grape Escape - Who doesn’t love free wine? The Grape Escape will have a tent set up during the extravaganza downtown with free wine tastings (with ID of course) with the goal to sell their new spring flavor of housemade wine. The tastings allow one sample per flavor per day. Below Zero - Whether your favorite flavor is chocolate, vanilla, or rhubarb, Below Zero has your back. The ice cream shop will have a stand set up in the midst of the festival so they can offer the event-goers a free scoop of ice cream as a cool way to welcome in the spring season. Providence Peak Memorial - Be sure to stop by the first aid tent the local nurses and EMTs have set up downtown during the festival for a free first aid kit and a quick lesson on emergency bandaging technics - just in case! Claret Public Library - The library, who’s main hub is in the neighborhood of Claret Park, will have a lending library set up downtown. Come and pick out some books to take home, bring some books to donate, or do both! While you’re at it, feel free to sign up for a library card with the local librarians hosting the booth.
Wonderwell - The science museum will have a booth set up with interactive science experiments and one big presentation per hour to display the many topics citizens of Providence Peak can learn about in their exhibits. They encourage both kids and adults alike to mess around their their hands-on experiments and learn to have fun with science!
Benny and Duke’s - Looking for family fun? Benny & Duke’s will have a mini golf course set up in the center of the festival with sixteen holes that will test the skills of even the greatest putter. While you’re there, be sure to sign up for their mini golf competition during the week of the festival!
