masterlist
September, 2003 - Perth, Australia
"Mum, it's so obvious she doesn't want me there!" You whined. Your mother was haphazardly chucking a soccer ball in a birthday bag, arranging the blue paper around it so it was semi-presentable. Bless her, but you knew Sam wouldn't care for the wrapping.
She had awkwardly handed you a party invitation after school that day as you plucked your bags off the racks.
"My mum said I had to invite a girl to come, sorry. There's good cake, though. It's ice cream."
She ran off almost as fast as she appeared, leaving you outside your Year 4 class alone. Why you? You weren't sporty at all, she could've at least invited one of the netball girls - they were always picking Sam for their teams, too. You were the anti-Sam, spending lunch with a small group of girls playing hopscotch and batting your eyes for the teacher's approval.
Black marker in your hand, you scribbled down a messy "happy birthday, Sammy K" in one of the white spaces on the ball. Your mum had taken you to Big W to choose one after school immediately after, given the late notice. You held it back, admiring your work. Would a heart be appropriate?
Yes.
You only turn 10 once, right? You added it front and centre on the ball, writing your name in the middle so she knew who it was from (though, she could probably tell a tween boy didn't make such an effort).
The party was, as expected, all boys. Sam's mother had greeted you warmly at the door, ushering you in with a comforting (and almost apologetic smile). Sam ran over excitedly to grab the gift bag off you, grabbing your arm to pull you over to the snacks table. You were introduced to all the other boys there, most of whom you knew from school.
You smiled shyly at all of them, spending most of the time sitting on the folded chairs outside while nibbling on some fairy bread and praying your mum would come get you. Sam ran around with the boys all afternoon, leaving you all alone with your thoughts. As it turned out, you had gotten the wrong type of football for Sam. You felt guilty for rushing at the shops, but Sam had hid the disappointment well, even complimenting your handwriting.
As the day came to an end, you were joined by Isaac. He was a friend of Sam's from an outside sports league, but had forgotten his asthma puffer and had to call it after two hours of straight footy. You talked most of the afternoon, complaining about your random 10 year old problems. You couldn't help noticing the way Sam came to talk to you more when she noticed Isaac there.
She probably just felt bad, you thought.
October, 2007 - Perth, Australia
Things had blossomed with Isaac. You remained friends for a few years, which eventually grew into something more romantic. He was your first boyfriend, and unfortunately your first love.
You were both invited to a party up in the hills. He had begged you to go, having become engrossed in the rumours of cruisers and beers being supplied by who-fucking-care's older brother. You had little interest, but his incessant nagging was beginning to piss you off, so you agreed.
Unfortunately as you both matured, Isaac changed. He was egotistical and big-headed, busy with AFL and making crude comments when he thought you weren't listening. It was hard not to see him in a different light, but sometimes you were offered a small glimpse at the small, sweet boy who sat out of breath next to you at the party.
You tugged on the hem of the sort black dress you were wearing, trying desperately hard to pull it further down your thigh. Isaac suggested "something sexy" for the party, much to your disagreement. You relented, and were now regretting it as you faced the chilly atmosphere of Perth's spring. He showed little interest in you while you sat next to him in on the couch, only passing you a beer and whispering "don't be lame" in your ear. Safe to say, the party kinda sucked.
You considered telling him you were going out front for air, but the way he was basically eye-fucking Karen Davies made you think twice. You wandered outside with teary eyes, Corona bottle in your hand as you breezed through the crowd of sweaty teenagers.
"Y/N?"
You turned, face to face with... Sam? She was older now, with slightly longer hair down to her shoulders and dressed in an oversized hoodie. Why was she giving you butterflies?
"Hey Sam," your voice came, "Sorry, just getting some air."
"Mind if I join?"
You motioned wordlessly for her to follow, her hand placed lightly on the small of your back as you navigated the halls to the front yard. God, you were so glad she couldn't see the red hot blush that painted your cheeks.
The two of you found yourselves sitting on the curb, legs stretched lazily out into the street.
"So Isaac's a dick now, 'ey?"
It was so nonchalant that it barely seemed hostile, Sam just took another swig from her bottle, grumbling when she noticed it was empty.
"You also don't have to drink the rest of that, you know? Doesn't make you lame or whatever."
You silently passed her the bottle, expecting for her to just chuck in a bin when she passed one next. However, she downed it in one go.
"Dickhead! I thought you were gonna throw it out! What if I wanted that later?" You laughed, playfully attempting to shove her off the curb. She only giggled in response, lightly shoving you back.
"Hey, I never got to say thanks for that soccer ball all those years ago," she started, "I actually play now. Mum 'n dad made me stop AFL, all the guys are bigger than me. But I actually really like soccer, your ball was the one I first used." She looked almost embarrassed confessing it, a small blush spreading across her face.
"Oh god, I remember that. Sorry, I think I scribbled all over it."
"Nah, it's cute- It's cool, sorry. It's cool, I liked it." She stammered, getting what looked like progressively more and more red.
"What are you up to now?" She said, awkwardly trying to change the subject.
"Oh I dunno, not much. Studying a lot, really. Isaac's been so odd lately so it's usually just me... It'd be cool to be a doctor, I think."
She looked up, eyebrows raised.
"No way! I always knew you'd do something like that, you were such a teacher's pet in primary school... The smartest, most nerdiest one there." She was back to her playful teasing now, and you found yourself slightly wishing that she'd flirt like this more.
What about Isaac? Were you a bad person? Why was Sam making you feel like this? Your head was starting to spin aggressively, the alcohol taking it's toll on your slight, 15 year old self. Sam grabbed your arm, rushing to hold back your hair as you crawled over to a bush, puking all over it. You felt too sick to be embarrassed.
Most of what you remember was her putting you in a taxi and slipping her phone number in your pocket. The next morning, you made sure to find the little note and stick it to your wall, staring longingly at the message written on it.
"Let's be friends - Sammy K"
You also broke up with Isaac.

December, 2016 - Perth, Australia
She was always on your mind, but could she say the same of you? You and Sam had gotten so much closer over the years, texting 24/7 when either of you had the chance. She was returning back for Christmas and you were on your way to pick her up from the airport, helping to surprise to her family.
You hadn't been able to date properly since that conversation with Sam on the curb. Nobody else made your heart skip a beat like she did, and you found yourself yearning to feel her touch once again, even if it was brief. You didn't care. You comforted her when she went through her first serious break up, and she would stay on call for hours while you broke down about the pressures of med school. It felt like there was something pulling the two of you together, and god, you hoped she felt it too.
Standing at the International Arrivals gate was nerve-racking. Every flurry of passengers sent your nerves flying, eyes anxiously darting from person to person as you picked at your nails in anticipation. You were so nervous, you almost missed her.
She was finally here.
Her short hair was tied back, and the dark rings under her eyes proved how drained she was from the flight. She lugged a large, black suitcase with her, looking around until her eyes met yours.
You both rushed forward. She engulfed you in a warm hug that felt like... home?
No words were shared as you stood there in each other's embrace.
The car ride to Sam's house was comfortably silent, but you couldn't help but notice how Sam's hand had come to rest on your leg as you drove. It felt like it was on fire, but she didn't acknowledge it, sunglasses over her eyes as she looked tiredly out her window.
You were probably just reading into things, Sam admitted once that she's a really touchy person. You didn't want to lead yourself on.
Sam's family had invited you inside for the celebrations, surrounding you with all sorts of questions about schooling and your life. In a quiet moment, it was just you and her mother alone on the couch. Her siblings and dad were outside chatting at the barbecue, with the two of you remaining inside to escape the heat.
"She loves you, you know," her mother said matter-of-factly, "you love her too."
"Excuse me? I swear I-"
"Oh, don't be silly." She replied, leaning to hold your hand.
"That girl looks at you like you hung the stars. I get so many calls of Y/N this... Y/N that... She's besotted."
"I- I don't know what to say," you said, holding back the tears that threatened to spill, "was it that obvious?"
"Oh, no no. Don't worry. Us mother's have a way with things. Don't think yours doesn't see it too."
You laughed, raising your head to meet your eye. She released your hands, patting you on the knee as she walked off at the same time Sam conveniently entered. Nice one, Roxy.
"God... do you remember that birthday party I had?" She laughed, coming to sit next to you. She stretched her arms over the top of the couch, her fingertips only inches from where you were currently resting.
"How could I forget? Hey guys, this is Y/N that doesn't play footy - isn't that how you introduced me?"
She just laughed at your mock offence, small apologies leaving her mouth as she reminisced.
"I mean, it wasn't a lie."
"Oh fuck off, Kerr." You shoved her lightly, watching as her hand came to her chest to feign offence. You both fell quiet, meeting each other's eyes in a once again comfortable silence.
"Why me?"
Sam looked taken aback, her eyes down as she searched for an answer.
"Why not you?" She said, looking up. You could tell the mood had shifted as her eyes met yours, a hint of vulnerability across her face.
"I think... I think I always knew it was you."
"Sam-"
"No," she spoke softly, her hand coming to hold yours, "Just let me finish?"
You nodded.
"I can't really explain it, but there's just this pull. It feels like I can't stay away, you know? We always found a way back to each other, even after all these years. It's just- It's just always you"
The tears that were threatening to spill finally did as you pulled her close. You could taste the salty tears that left both your eyes as your lips met hers, a soft kiss that felt like it lasted a lifetime. Her hands came to hold the sides of your face, deepening the kiss until you were gasping for breath. Reluctantly, you pulled away and rested your forehead against hers.
"I think I love you, Y/N."
"I think I love you too, Sam."
July 14th, 2020 - London to Perth
"Have you got your comfy shoes, babe?"
A small "fuck!" echoed from your shared bedroom as your girlfriend scrambled to fish her shoes out from whatever pile she had thrown them in. Standing by the door, you watched as she stumbled forward and pulled her socks on, almost knocking over several pot plants as she did so. At 3am in the morning, she was not exactly a vision of grace and elegance.
The two of you had bounced around countries as Sam switched clubs, settling in the UK as she signed a contact with Chelsea. Your medical degree allowed a job almost anywhere and so you quickly found work at a nearby children's hospital, much to Sam's delight.
At the moment though, you were saying goodbye to your London apartment as you jetted back to your hometown. As far as you knew, there was no specific reason to be returning home, with Sam citing homesickness. You thought it suspicious as she was there only two months ago, but never bothered questioning it. You both missed Australia and eventually planned on moving back, but for now you were happy living a busy life in the UK.
Sam always had a thing about planes, as you came to learn. She was ok when they were completely in the air, always able to distract herself with some form of tv or movie (or sleeping pills), but you could tell by the way her knee was bouncing that this time would be no different.
"Hey, it's alright", you said, palm reaching across to settle her, "we'll be ok, these things are freaky safe now."
"I know. Logically I know it's fine but I just... I can't help it"
You only sighed, kissing her cheek and taking her hand in yours. The safety video played on the screens in front of you as you pulled her head to your shoulder, stroking her hair. Her body relaxed into yours as her breathing steadied, and you could feel her racing heart start finally slowing down.
She was drowsy from the early wake up and easily fell into a peaceful slumber. You prayed for no turbulence, admiring the few freckles and lines that were littered across her perfect face. She needed the rest, having been so anxious about this trip and her upcoming tournaments that the stress had almost permanently darkened under her eyes.
With her hand in yours, you soon followed her in sleep.
July 17th, 2020 - Perth, Australia
"I need to shake off the jetlag, wanna go for a walk?"
You turned suddenly as she called from the bathroom, walking out and drying her hair.
"Mum said they redid the park up the road, good field for soccer... We can practice some more if you'd like?" She asked, almost nervously. You had requested Sam start teaching you more about the game; a role she took very seriously. She was showing you all the tricks she'd learnt, even trying her hardest not to laugh when you fell flat on your ass several times in a row.
The two of you set off just before golden hour, navigating the streets of Fremantle to the park. Sam's hand was in yours the whole time, the other holding the soccer ball close to her hip - she was being so protective other the goddamn thing.
"I'll stand here, we'll just go back and forth until you get your confidence up."
She was taking several steps back away from you, positioning the ball at her feet before kicking it towards you.
"You know this is the one you gave me, right?"
You kicked it back, reciprocating.
"God, you're such a sap... Love you for it, though." She only laughed, winking as she did so. Even after 4 years, she still made you blush like you were 15.
The both of you continued, going though the motions until Sam decided to give it a forceful kick, landing it far behind you.
"Hey! What was that for?"
"Sorry, love. Rules of the game; she who missed must go fetch."
"That's not even- Oh, whatever"
You ran off as Sam followed behind you - why was she moving from her spot? That's when you noticed it.
"Hey dummy, this isn't even the ball I gave you - I used black maker on mine." You jokingly shouted back, picking it up to hold it by your side. "Got some fangirl groupies to replace me, huh? Can't believe you thought I used red marker."
She stood a few metres away from you, a small smirk on her face.
"Why don't you read it then, genius?"
You looked down, confused. What was she playing at?
Marry me?
It was written neatly in red marker, a giant heart below it - just like the one you first gifted Sam at her party all those years ago. You looked up, only to be met with the sight of Sam on one knee in front of you, a small blue box in her hands.
"Well?"
She had tears in her eyes, but her smirk remained.
You were still speechless, the red words echoing in your brain. She wanted you to marry her. She wanted you to be her wife. You sank to your knees to be level with her, gently grabbing her face to pull her in for a kiss.
You could feel her smiling against your lips, sliding the ring on your finger wordlessly as your mouth met hers.

Close quarters
Summary: Never has sharing a bed been so difficult
Warning: australian colloquialism/phrases (swearing soz not soz) and unedited uni is killing me :)
A long long night for the Matilda's, a wonderful game, the longest penalty shoot out in World Cup history. Y/n had never felt so proud to be alongside these women. Well most of them anyways, her feelings towards her Captain still remained unsolved.
Never had a single person frustrated her in her whole life, of course she respected her she's Sam Kerr for god sakes she had to. But that arrogance god, it frustrated her to no means.
Her smirk, her flirty winks and that tongue.
Wait what ew not like that
The way she smugly stuck it out after her goals, it made it her feel something.
Yes how exactly did it make me feel.
That's what Y/n was trying to discover using her vodka and soda as an accomplice on her journey. However, it was still World Cup and she couldn't get too crazy, just one celebratory drink.
Sitting with Hailey at the bar they discussed the game at length her other team mates surrounded around the pool table taking turns with one another. A new tactic of cool down their coaches had suggested as a bonding exercise.
Y/n felt a gaze on her from across the room but when she turned they were gone.
"You alright chicky?" Haley brushed her arm, a concerned frown rippling across her forehead. Y/n smiled at the term of endearment vigorously nodding.
"Just tired that's all, I might head up to the rooms" she yawned, finishing the last sip of her drink. However, just as she stood up two hotel staff came into the bar area.
"Ladies we have an unfortunate announcement to make, due to a leak in our pipe system a few of the rooms we had set aside for you have been damaged by water. Not to worry however, all of your belongings were fine" A few groans, moans and sighs were heard around the room.
"Not to worry girls, we have assigned you roommates to share with based off your positions, a bonding exercise if you will" Your coach chuckled slightly.
Perfect I'll be assigned with Hailey
"Arnold and Kennedy" both woman laughed like 13 year olds sharing a room at camp, walking off to their room.
I cannot believe I am getting an assigned room at 27
"L/N, Kerr is coming to join you" Y/n swear she felt her heart fall out of her arse. She looked over at Kerr who had a mischievous glint in her eye, saluting at her coach with that signature cheeky smile.
You both walked out of the room in silence, Hailey giving you a reassuring smile and thumbs up.
I really hope I can fall asleep quickly
Y/n heard a knock on the door she quickly rushed over opening it hastily.
"Hey roomie" Sam slightly slurred obviously not obeying the one celebratory drink rule, she glided past Y/n, taking in her room and belongings. Spending a long time looking at Y/n's photos she'd brought from home.
"Are these your siblings?" Sam half smiled, glazing over the photo she held it up towards the light.
"Yes, my brother and sister" Y/n stated proudly, extremely grateful of her wonderful supportive family.
Y/n noticed a change in Sam's demeanour once she saw the photo of her and Hailey at the season wrap up party last year. Sam's brow now furrowed as she walked away placing her things down.
Finally she turned around and faced Y/n, drinking in her appearance and forming a very large smile.
"Cute pjs L/n" Y/n quickly flushed a bright shade of red completely forgetting she was in her big Chelsea shirt and matching sweats.
"They were a gift actually, besides I don't know if you can be giving me much heat in those" Y/n quickly retaliated eyeing Sam's kangaroo and koala pj set. She gasped placing a hand on her chest pretending to be offended.
"Well I usually sleep in boxers and no shirt but I thought we'd keep it PG for our first sleep over" She winked, Y/n turning a shade of red she didn't even know was possible.
Both girls turned to face the bed, the one king mattress quickly becoming the elephant in the room.
"Ill take the couch" they both said in unison.
"You were on field longer tonight you deserve the rest more" Sam argued to the best of her slightly intoxicated abilities.
"You're team captain and recovering from injury you're taking it" Y/n retaliated
Sam shook her head, "Lets just share we are teammates, its just fucking bed".
She slipped in the bed switching her beside lamp off, a yawn escaping her she closed her eyes. Y/n stood their hesistantly.
"Y/n come on, I don't bite" The girl sighed slowly sliding in to their shared bed, turning off her bedside lamp, with now only having the light glow of Brisbane CBD shining through their windows.
Y/n could feel her heart beating in her ears.
The silence of the room was killing her.
Everything was so still.
It was as if time was frozen.
Why is this affecting me so much God, just go to sleep Y/n
The only source of comfort to Y/n was the feeling of Sam also tossing and turning, until she stopped facing Y/n's back.
"Psst, Y/n are you awake still?" Sam whispered
Both girls turned now facing one another. Sam feeling y/n's breath softly in hale and exhale.
"Yes Kerr what is it?"
"I just wanted to know...how long have you and Russo been together?" Sam hesitated, her breath tightly in her throat waiting for the response.
"What?" Y/n laughed tears nearly forming in her eyes, "Sam we are not together just very good friends"
"Oh,oh but you must have someone back home" The captain pried more.
"Nope just me" Y/n whispered, Sam's eye intently staring over her face trying to read her expression.
The room was hot, Y/n had never felt so tense she felt like she was melting. She suddenly felt a hand on her cheek, a thumb brushed over eye an eyelash stuck on Sam's thumb.
"Make a wish" Sam whispered, holding out her thumb. Y/n blew it away, Sam's hand now back on her cheek.
"Please don't kill me for this" Sam gently moving y/n's face towards hers.
Their lips slowly interlocking, the warmth flowed through Y/n like nothing ever had before. It felt like her body had finally switched on and every nerve had been sent into overdrive.
Sam's lips sweetly tasting like her strawberry chapstick and minty toothpaste. Sam smiled into the kiss breaking it apart.
"You've had no idea how long I wanted to do that for" Sam smiled stroking Y/n's hair.
I think I know what the feeling is now.
"Oh I might have some idea" she challenged back.
EXTRA:
"Macca I swear to god if you ruin this I'm going to fuck you up" Alannah whisper yelled
"One more shot" Mackenzie hushed leaning over the bed
The girls of course knew this was going to happen and were prepared rightfully so to document the occasion.
Both Y/n and their captain were entangled in one another looking as content as could possibly be.
"Mary you owe me that $15 babe" Hailey grinned
"No way", Mary scoffed hushing everyone out the door "I said August you owe me $40".
"Still worth it" Hailey smiled looking one more time at the couple before leaving them in peace.

TELLING THE TEAM | s.kerr the sweet nora universe, masterlist
summary: you and sam decide that it's finally time to tell the girls about your big news.
pairing: mum!sam kerr x fem!reader
notes: love love love this one
august 2019, 3 months pregnant
"Y/N, HAVE YOU SEEN my boots?!"
you tried to stop yourself from rolling your eyes at sam before calling back to her, "which ones?".
"my mercurials!"
"which ones?!" you yelled back, knowing she had over five pairs of mercurials.
"the pink ones!" you held back a groan, knowing exactly where she had left them.
"they're under the bench!"
"where?!" sam's footsteps grew closer as she began to stomp down the stairs of your brisbane apartment. sam came into the living room, watching as you rounded around the kitchen counter, kicking out her black mesh training bag.
"they're still here, in yesterday's training bag" you kicked the bag over to her. sam had a bad habit of leaving her things laying around and then forgetting where everything was. you had a good habit of finding them all for her.
"i was looking for that" sam raised her eyebrows as she picked up the bag.
"mhm" you hummed, going back into the kitchen to finish getting breakfast.
"you're the best" sam stopped you in your tracks, snaking her arms around your waist. she rested her hands on your tiny bump that had began to form. "how are you feeling?" she asked, kissing you on the cheek before leaning her chin on your shoulder.
"better," you nodded. "tired still" a sigh escaped your lips, recalling your sleepless night. were you too hot? too cold? you couldn't decide. sam just so happened to sleep through the entire ordeal.
"we'll have an early night," she drew circles on your bump with her thumb, giving you another kiss. "i'll be home around two?" she looked to you for confirmation that the times worked for you. if, in a hypothetical world, they didn't; you knew she would be home whenever you needed her.
"okay," you nodded, leaning back into her embrace. "have fun, good luck" you whispered, turning your head to kiss her cheek before she left for practice.
"oh babe," sam pulled back a little so she could see you properly. "i think.." she lead, "i think i wanna tell the girls".
you blinked a few times, processing what she had said. "really?" you asked her, your eyebrows raised.
"yeah," sam looked down at your belly, drinking in your new glow. "can't hide her forever" she smirked softly before meeting your gaze again.
"when do you wanna tell them?" you asked, still a little taken back that 'mrs. lets keep it to ourselves for a bit longer' wanted to tell her teammates.
"today?" she shrugged, "did you wanna come to prac? i'll set you up in the shade" sam suggested.
you shook your head straight away, "i dont wanna barge in on practice, sam" you told her.
"you're not!" she argued, "they love you".
"i don't want to annoy anyone" you gently pulled yourself from her grasp and went to walk back into the kitchen.
"i want you to be there when we tell them" sam followed you, propping herself up on the counter that you needed to get into. she forced you to look at her, stopping you from getting a bowl for breakfast. "please?" she leant forwards and grabbed your hands in hers, engulfing them in a tight grasp.
you sighed, closing your eyes. "fine" you huffed, "now move" you waved her away, you were verging on hangry.
"thank you" sam smiled, pushing herself off of the counter. she grabbed your hand and pulled you along and away from your cupboard, away from your cereal. "come on, i'm late" she scooped your bag and her training bag off of the bench and hiked her duffle bag on her shoulder, leading you to the front door.
"my cereal!" you whined.
"shh" she kissed your cheek a few times, quieting you down. "i'll get you breakfast on the way. i'm running late" she chuckled, locking the door behind you both.
"you.. late? really?" you looked back at her as she rushed you towards the car. "no!" you exclaimed, a faux look of shock on your face as you got into the passenger seat of sam's car.
"shut up" she deadpanned before closing your door on you.
the drive wasn't too far, brisbane traffic was kind to you this morning. as you pulled into the car park you saw alanna getting out of her car as well. sam called out to her as she pulled her duffle bag from the back seat.
alanna turned around and you were met with a big grin as she realised that sam had you in tow. "what are you doing here, missy?" she grinned, pulling you in for a hug. you tried to keep your belly off of her as much as possible without being too obvious, not needing your tiny bump to press against her and give it away.
"i'm in my rookie season" you chuckled.
"oh yeah, course" alanna laughed as if it was obvious. "silly me," she scoffed.
"sam dragged me out," you walked with alanna, her arm now interlocked with yours.
"sounds like her"
"right here" sam piped up, reminding you both of her presence.
"we know" alanna shrugged, giving her a look with a scrunched up file and a sarcastic smile.
"i'll bench you," sam raised her eyebrows at her.
"then how will we win games?" alanna looked from her captain to you, a confused look painted her face. you let sam and alanna talk about football while you all made your ways to the change room.
"y/n!" emily smiled as she watched you walk in with sam and alanna. she made her way over to you and pulled you in for a hug.
"hi," you smiled, giving her a tight squeeze. "how are you?" you asked as you pulled away to look at her.
"good," she smiled, "what are you doing here?".
"i-"
"new recruit," sam cut you off, draping her arm around your shoulder, pulling you in close. emily chuckled and spoke with you about how you had been. it was only a few minutes before ante came into the room.
"alright girls," he clapped his hands as he walked into the change rooms, grabbing everyone's attention. "hi y/n," he quickly shot you a smile as he walked into the centre of the room. "we've got some new drills we want to run today for the midfield, and then i want to run a strategy session" he explained, the coaching staff trailing in behind him. "y/n, you can help me yell at them if they run too slow" he pointed over at you with a small smile on his lips.
"perfect," you nodded, arms crossed over your chest.
"she's good at yelling at me" sam looked at you, a few of the girls laughing at her comment.
"oh, whatever" you rolled your eyes, shaking her off with a smile.
"alright, let's get out there" ante held his thumbs up before heading out, "sunscreen on! it's hot" he called out.
"c'mon, i'll find you a spot" sam put you back under her arm, now a little bit taller with her boots on. "we'll tell 'em after" she whispered in your ear. you all made your way out onto the field and you silently thanked yourself for wearing sneakers this morning so you didn't ruin the turf.
"how are you, y/n?" ante asked as you and sam made your way out.
"good, ante. how are you?" you smiled at him as sam walked off with caitlin.
"great," he grinned, "joining us today for prac, hey?"
"i've been dragged out, yes" you nodded, chuckling softly.
"it's always good to have you around," he gave you a light pat on the back before heading off to speak with some of the coaching staff.
"y/n!" sam waved you over to the player's bench. you walked over and met her where she had set up a spot for you. "have you got your water?" she asked.
"yep" you nodded, grabbing it from your bag.
"here," sam crouched down in front of you and opened the bottle of sunscreen that the team would use today. "put this on, then i'll take it over to the girls" she told you, squeezing some out into your hand.
"sam-" you went to argue.
"i'm literally not kidding" she looked up at you, not a glint of a joke in her gaze. you rolled your eyes before rubbing in into your face and neck. "ears!" she reminded you grumpily. you chuckled, shaking your head at her. "don't shake your head at me" she gave your leg a little shove.
"happy?" you asked her, your face oily from the sunscreen.
"very," she stood up, giving your thigh a squeeze beforehand. "i'll see you after, try not to stare at me too much" she playfully tapped your knee with the sunscreen before walking off to meet the girls.
"mm, i'll try" you chuckled, "have fun".
"love you" she called out to you. "sunscreen?! does anyone want some sunscreen?" she shouted as she met up with the girls.
"skip!" katrina called out. sam walked over to her, reaching out to pass her the bottle. "c'mere" kat waved her away from the others, isolating themselves from the bigger group.
"what?" sam lowered her voice.
sam watched as katrina struggled with her internal voice for a moment. "did you.." she sighed, trying to phrase what she wanted to say the right way. "is-" she cut herself off again, before committing to her words. "is y/n pregnant?"
sam's jaw dropped, and she looked around to see if anyone heard what katrina had said. "wha-" she looked back at katrina, "shh.. how did you know?"
she crossed her arms over her chest, and looked up at her young captain with raised eyebrows. "the last time you brought her to training, you told us you were engaged" she reminded you. sam nodded slowly, realising that he had been right.
sam bit her lip before admitting the truth to her teammate. “she's only a month or so along" she whispered, hoping no one was taking notice of their meeting.
"sam! that's amazing" katrina tried her best to contain her excitement. "congratulations! awe i wanna hug you," she knew how important this was to you both. having been the first person to be told that you were going through rounds of ivf, mini had been waiting for this day to come. "i'll keep it on the down-low" she promised.
"thanks min," sam whispered, letting a smile break through finally. she often had moments like this. where it actually hit her.. she was going to have a baby with you.
"i'm so happy for you" kat whispered again.
"sam, katrina!" ante called out, "eyes up!"
training flew by for sam and the girls. not so much for you, who had been sitting in the hot sun. the cool breeze that would come past every few minutes and your water bottle were your only relief.
"shit, it's hot" caitlin sighed, grabbing her water bottle from the cart. the girls began to gather around the bottle-carts, getting a drink after their drills.
"i'm dying here" macca agreed, taking off her keeping gloves.
"bring it in girls!" sam clapped. she gathered the girls over by the playing bench where you were sitting, granting them all a moment of solace in the shade. "obviously, i know it's going to be a busy few months. we've got a world cup to go win, i know lots of you have commitments to other clubs too, so i just want to tell you that if you are struggling, make sure you come have a chat with me or with ante. i don't want anyone to feel like they can't come forward if they're not one-hundred percent, okay?"
the girls nodded as sam spoke, listening to what their captain was saying to them. "especially because next year i'll be a little preoccupied so i want you to talk to me now as much as you can"
a few heads shot up. confused looked were shared between the girls.
but it was alanna that spoke up, "what?".
"because when y/n has the baby next january i might be a little busy" sam nodded, a smile breaking through her neutral exterior.
"oh my god!"
"are you fucking kidding?"
you and sam watched as the girls let the news set in. ellie had already ran over to you and engulfed you in a tight embrace. "holy shit! y/n!" she grinned, holding you tight. you laughed at her as other girls came over to say congratulations to you.
"thanks girls" you chuckled, leaning your head on ellie who still had a strong hold you on.
"i knew she wouldn't drag you out for nothing!" lydia smiled, giving sam a little shove.
"she didn't even wanna come!" sam yelled, throwing you under the bus.
"y/n! that’s low" clare held her hands up in the air, looking over at you now.
"she's a liar," you smirked, meeting clare's gaze.
"i can't believe it!" tameka brought sam in for a hug. "congrats guys" she looked back over to you afterwards.
"we're gonna have a baby!" alanna cheered, clapping her hands as mackenzie hugged her.
"i'm gonna be an aunty!" macca exclaimed.
"the kid's gonna have like twenty aunties" sam laughed, earning a few chuckles from the others.
"we’ll, i'll be her favourite so i don't mind" alanna shrugged, earning a glare from mackenzie.
as you looked around you realised how lucky your baby would be, because sam was right; they had twenty plus aunties ready to love them as soon as they was here.

warnings: ivf, pregnancy mentions, slight angst
pairing: sam kerr x fem!reader
my masterlist | series masterlist
“Ouch! Do you mind?”
“You’re so dramatic; it’s just a pinch, dummy.”
“Why are we even doing this?”
You giggled, putting the needle in your newly dedicated sharps bin as Sam re-tied the strings of her grey track pants.
“I’m starting to become uncomfortable about how much you enjoy this,” she teased, staring you down from the counter she was currently perched on. You passed her the icepack as she continued, “in fact, I’d go as far as to say you look forward to it.”
“Oh do you, now? I’m hurt, Sammy. Truly hurt. I’m thinking about the children, and if you just can't see that - Well, I just don’t know if this relationship will work out..”
“Oh, piss off!” She laughed, shoving your shoulder lightly as she leaned in for a kiss, her hand coming to lift your chin.
“But do you kiss all your patients after you stab them, babe?”
“Only the cute ones” You fired back. She laughed softly, repeatedly poking and then wincing at the injection site. Her thigh was littered with small purple splotches, something she was strangely fascinated by.
You finished up what you were doing in the bathroom, following her out into your shared kitchen. Sam pottered around beside you, chopping vegetables before haphazardly throwing them into the bowl. It was a comfortable silence that you revelled in, but one you both secretly wished to be soon filled by a small baby's soft, nonsensical babbling.
“Did they say we could confirm the ninth for our retrieval date? I’ve got training the next Friday so I’ve got to be back at it by then and I swear that woman over the phone wasn’t even listening.” She asked from across the kitchen, passing you a pan.
“Yup. And it’s Michaels for the procedure, so don’t worry about one of those Jane the Virgin things happening. She’s great.”
Sam’s response came almost immediately, followed quickly by a small laugh.
“Why can’t you do it? I don’t need a stranger poking around down there.”
“I’m not even on gynae rotations, dumbass. No way they’re letting me near something that precious… they barely even trust me with forceps.”
Sam only grunted stubbornly, crossing her arms over her chest as she sighed deeply. She was stressed about the procedure, you could tell. It was your first cycle of IVF, and you were still young but the success rates weren’t in your favour. The ultrasound had confirmed everything was going as well as it could, but that couldn’t settle her nerves. And how could you blame her? With the retrieval procedure only days away, the whole process was beginning to seem more real.
Besides, the extra dosage of hormones wasn’t helping. You noticed at around day three of the injections when you walked into Sam hunched over on the couch crying at the tv, because “all the dogs just look so sad”. You cursed out the RSPCA, joining her on the couch and pulling her into you. She sniffled into your neck, slightly embarrassed by her outburst.
“Are they moving? I swear they are, I can feel it!”
You rolled your eyes, watching as she squinted towards the bottom of the bed.
“Sam, your toes definitely aren’t moving. I’m looking right at them.”
She huffed, fiddling with the hem of the light blanket covering her. The walls of the room were a soft yellow, with two small chairs and an instrument trolley in the corner.
A knock at the door caught your attention, watching as your fellow resident (and closest friend) Carmen walked in. Her blue scrubs were swapped out for a soft, baby pink set - a sign she was working on the OB/GYN floor today.
“Piss off, you are not doing my procedure,” Sam yelled jokingly, reaching for a small balled-up tissue to throw in her direction. One of your favourite things about Sam was her ability to fit seamlessly into your friend group. When you first started dating, you were nervous to introduce her to your friends - after all, they were such opposites (or so you thought). But in true Sam fashion, she found her place within minutes, joining in on jokes and insisting on hanging out more often. You loved it.
Carmen deflected the shot with ease, coming to hug you from the side.
“No way, mate. You wish. Just here to yell at Y/N for getting today off when we’re all stuck doing paperwork.” You smirked proudly, jabbing her in the ribs as she released a small oomf.
“You’ll be right though, Sammy K. Michael’s is a beast, this is her bread and butter. Like, I dunno, your equivalent of lightly tapping a ball.”
“Hey,” You intervened, “they miss the ball half the time, you know!”
“Y/N!”
You laughed at her shocked face, affectionately ruffling the top of her head until she swatted your hand away playfully. Carmen rolled her eyes at the two of you, pulling out her phone to capture a sweet photo.
“Look, I’ve gotta run. But let me know when Sammy has to put the hairnet on, I’m going to make it my contact photo!”
Sam scoffed as Carmen left the room, returning to quietly picking at her nails. You watched intently, coming to rest your hand on hers.
“How are you feeling?”
“I dunno, I’m not super nervous. But I am a little bit…regular nervous,” she replied, looking up at you. “What if something goes wrong and it doesn’t work? What if the injections haven’t worked?”
“I’m sure it’ll be fine, baby. The scans looked good, they said it looked better than they thought.” You stroked her arm, kissing her forehead before you continued. “We’ll be ok, I know we will.”
She sighed into your neck, allowing herself just to breathe. For a moment, it felt like just the two of you in the whole of the hospital as you lay together, hand in hand.
The room was lit a soft, pale blue. The whirr of the ceiling fan filled the silence, the only other sound being the soft breathing beside you. Sam’s body was spread to your left, her legs twisted around the duvet, reminiscent of a pretzel. She always slept so strangely (and apparently the general aneathesia just exaggerated it).
You stared longingly at the space beside your bed, which had been cleared of its normal pile of junk. Up until recently, it was Sam’s throw-it-here-and-worry-later spot, often home to a few different pairs of shoes and a jersey that probably needed a wash (or two). Now. it was cleared in the hope it would soon be filled with a tiny little bassinet, and, of course, your tiny little baby. To others, the clearing of that part of your room probably didn’t mean anything at all, but it was so much more than that.
“Y’know,” Sam said, panting as she rolled off of you, “you’re so lucky we’re gay.”
“W- Huh?”
She giggled breathlessly, turning onto her side to look into your eyes.
“Because if we were straight, you’d so be pregnant right now… it’s a thing! It’s our wedding night, and everyyyone knows the first baby is always conceived right then.”
Your face fell into your palm, hiding your smile.
“Oh my god, Sam.” You playfully flicked her forehead, watching as she only smiled in response.
“That implies no sex until marriage, and last time I checked,” you brought your hand to your duvet, lifting the covers to show your uncovered, tangled-up bodies underneath, “we did NOT play by those rules.”
“Technicalities” she waved dismissively, “You’d be knocked up and everyone would be like, ‘yeahh, they did it on their wedding night’.”
“You’re such an idiot…. And no thanks to you, everyone already knows we’ve done it anyway.”
“Hey! It’s not my fault Alanna overheard… that hotel had thin walls, I swear.”
You both laughed at the memory, recalling Alanna’s shocked expression and furious apologies as she walked in on the two of you years earlier. She was just drunk and stumbled into the wrong room by accident, but she sobered up pretty quickly afterwards. The next morning at breakfast she affectionately congratulated Sam and you at breakfast, giving Sam a firm pat on the back as she did so.
You both lay quietly, your head nestled into Sam’s neck as she played with your hair, twirling the same little strands back and forth.
“Do you ever think about it?”
“Kids?”
Her hands stopped briefly, before continuing with their rhythmic motions in your hair. She hadn’t predicted that.
“Yeah. How’d you know?”
“I think about it too.”
“A lot?”
“Yeah.”
She waited a few moments, before lifting her head and turning to you once again. Her eyes were serious this time, almost a little glassy. Almost.
“I want kids. With you, Y/N.”
“I want kids with you too, Sam. I always have.”
She smiled back at you, pushing a strand of hair out of your face. You couldn’t help but notice the faint red blush that painted her cheeks; she must’ve been sitting on this for a while.
“I dunno…It’s so scary, though. And it’s such a long process, I feel like I’ll always be too nervous to say anything. What if it’s the wrong time?”
“Yeah,” her hand coming to delicately line your lips, “I know. Maybe we can just take it slow, build ourselves up to the idea?”
You grinned back, holding back a small giggle. “You’ll have to make space in our room, you know - are you ready to part with your messy pile?”
“I didn’t even think of that,” she exclaimed, teasingly feigning shock. “We may have to reconsider this whole baby thing.”
Silence fell over the room once again as she wrapped her arm around you, the both of you off in your own little worlds. The post-sex fatigue was creeping up, pulling you down into a peaceful slumber.
You yawned, opening your eyes to look at her for the first time in what felt like ages
“How will we know when we’re ready?”
“Well, you said we have to make room for the bassinet, right.”
“Mmm?”
“I think when I move my shoes… and you don’t move them back. Then we’ll know.”
You smiled at the memory of your wedding night, looking to your now wife by your side and the gold ring that sat perfectly on her finger, then to the small clock on your bedside table - 12:51 am on the 23rd - almost two months from the day you both decided.
You had spent the morning ambling around the apartment in the early morning light, taking sips from your coffee each time you walked past the mug on the bench. Sam was already at training, having left your sleeping form with a small peck on the cheek and water boiled in the kettle.
Laundry on your hip, you picked up her bright pink soccer boots from their home on the bedroom floor and put them back in the cupboard, along with a few crumpled hoodies and spare jerseys. You often wondered if she had forgotten what you had spoken about the night of your wedding… After all, she DID have a lot to drink.
The day lagged on until Sam came home, rushing through the door with the energy of a hyped-up golden retriever.
“My god, swear Guro was on fire today. She must’ve had crack for breakfast because I couldn’t even keep up, my calves fucking kill!”
You greeted her with a kiss and another mug of coffee that she delightedly accepted, walking into the bedroom to shower and change. The ache of last night’s…activities were still fresh on your mind, and the sound of the now running water drew you to the ensuite.
Instinctively, you went to kick the clothes Sam undoubtedly left on the floor out of the way
“Fuck!”
Your foot hit the side of the bed, a warm ache spreading up your leg. You looked down.
Nothing.
Upon opening the cupboard, you found Sam’s shoes tucked neatly on the rack with the rest of them, her uniform in the hamper. The floor was completely clear, not even a sock in sight. Maybe it was a mistake, did she really mean it? Maybe she was just worked up from training and forgot about your unspoken rule. Right?
You were in a state of almost shock, walking slowly into the bathroom. Your attempt to close the door was futile as you mindlessly stepped forward, kicking off your slippers to stand opposite Sam, separated only by the glass door.
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
Sam’s face was fresh from the shower, her eyebrows creased slightly in the middle. You could see from her face that she was deep in thought, most likely overthinking her decision to move the mess on the floor.
“You didn’t move it back.”
“I didn’t.”
You opened the door to the shower, now face to face. The hot water let occasional spits hit your skin, your clothes getting more and more wet by the second. Sam’s soaked hand reached out to find yours, her fingers nervously interlocking around them as her eyes met with you
“Are we having a baby?”
Yeah,” she cried, pulling your face to hers under the water, “we’re having a baby.”
“Oooh, I’ll take that.”
In the blink of an eye, Carmen had snuck behind you to steal your freshly poured coffee straight from your hands. Sam had designated her the official “Y/N watchdog” for the time being, seeing as Sam couldn’t keep an eye on you around the hospital.
“Hey! It’s decaf, plus I’m not even pregnant yet anyway.”
She took a sip, immediately wincing at the bitterness
“Fuck no it’s not decaf,” her face soured, “is this a double shot? Christ.”
You laughed, reaching back for another sip that she barely resisted. You paced around the wards, chatting on and off about the consultants and the latest nurses station gossip. You were likely to be the next topic of conversation once they found out about your plans for a baby.
It was hard enough being a female resident. The medical profession was still far behind the rest of the world when it came to gender bias at work, and you were no exception. There were whispers of the male paramedics that frequented the ER doors having a “rating” for the female staff; they called you over for gruesome work in your first weeks just to see you squirm. Where the boys could slack, you pushed to work overtime and impress the old consultant who saw you only as hospital decorum.
Getting pregnant during residency wasn’t as dangerous as it once was, but you were still fearful of the strain it would put on your career. Would they look at you differently? Would they exclude you because of your “condition”?
It was one thing you and Sam were able to connect over. Sexism in your respective industries was so prevalent, both of you were often overlooked for your male counterparts despite performing equally as well (usually better). Despite these shared experiences, it was still the cause of one of your most heated arguments with Sam.
Sam’s hands ran down her face, dragging the skin in exaggeration as she sighed with frustration. She was opposite you, standing across the shared bed as she attempted to defend herself. It had started as you both made the bed that morning, pulling up the duvet and chatting about whatever was on your mind. However, Sam’s offhand comment of “when you’re pregnant” had thrown a curveball on the mood.
“Oh my god, I don’t even know why you’re being like this. You know I can’t afford to be pregnant right now, Y/N.”
“Oh, and I can?”
You were fuming, arms folded across your chest as you stared her down, challenging her to continue. If she wanted to go there, you’d happily comply. She wasn’t wrong when she said that, after all, her career was physically demanding and undoubtedly dangerous for a pregnant woman further along. But why did she have to assume that it would be you? She didn’t even ask. Your job was just as challenging in other aspects, why didn’t she understand that?
“No- You know what I mean.”
You did know, but there was no way you were backing down now.
“I get bashed all day, Y/N. And if I stop to have a baby now, then take leave and recover? That’s ages gone, they might not put me in next time.”
Sam worried constantly about her career; if she was taken seriously, if she could keep playing for as long as she wanted.
“I get it, Sam. I do. But you didn’t even stop to ask me. A baby could fuck with my career too, you know. Did you even think of that? I’ll be the hospital liability.”
Sam’s eyes briefly flicked to concern, watching as yours welled up and your face reddened with each passing moment. But as soon as it came, it was gone, and she was back to her previous exasperated expression. She grabbed her keys from the nightstand, slipped on a pair of sneakers and turned to walk out the door.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“I can’t even deal with this right now, I’m going for a walk.”
You stood in the doorway as the front door slammed shut, Sam exiting your vision. Your face fell into your hands, the tears falling freely as you cried silently. Were you really ready for this?
The memory of your argument was still fresh on your mind as you paced the halls, now separated from Carmen as you continued with rounds. Knocking on the door of your next patient, you shuffled your thoughts to the back of your mind.
“Aye, a bit shorter than the last one. Tall and mean, she was.”
Mrs Zielinski was newly admitted to your ward on account of her stomach pains. She was short and slight, with a thick accent - Eastern Europe, you guessed. Her notes had a little warning at the bottom, stating she was confrontational and suspicious of most treatment she was offered. You had heard rumours of how she apparently threw her ice chips at Alex for offering some ibuprofen.
You only smiled, flipping through her chart and making your way to her bedside. You fiddled with the heart monitor, watching her stare intently at you. You grimaced at her heart rate - she was still tachycardic, with her blood pressure having risen from last night.
“Mrs Zie- Martyna, may I call you that?”
“No.”
You had hoped to be friendly with her in an effort to persuade her to accept treatment, but it seemed no matter how many smiles you offered, she only intensified her glare.
“Well, Mrs Zielinski, have the nurses been in to talk with you about your heart?”
“Heart is fine. Nice and strong.”
She patted her chest as if it was an achievement, smiling proudly. You held back a small laugh, difficult patients, while annoying, were often the most entertaining.
“Actually, it’s going a lot faster than I’d like it to.” You explained, smiling down sympathetically. “I’d like to give you something to calm it down.”
“Pfft, none of that. You people always trying to poison me, heart is fine.”
You sighed. While aggravating, the well-being of patients was always at the forefront of your mind. You often struggled with watching people make decisions that harmed them further, coming home and crying to Sam about how tough it was to sit back and watch. She would stroke your hair and soothe you, rubbing circles on your back as you sniffled. She was your rock in this profession, answering her phone late at night even when she was exhausted just to listen to you rant.
“Alright. Can I cut you a deal?”
She looked up suspiciously.
“If you let me take you to get an ECG and see what’s going on, I’ll get that male nurse back in here for you to throw ice at.”
She hesitated, before scoffing. You piqued your head towards her for clarification, and she sighed a quiet fine under her breath. A gleeful smile painted your face as you grabbed your pager, letting her know you’d be back later to take her down to the cardiac floor.
Two hours and an argument with the technician later, you were pushing Mrs Zielinski down the halls towards the elevator. It was around 9 in the evening (maybe even later; you could barely tell these days) and the halls were quiet, filled with the soft beeping of machines and the nurses chatting at the stations.
Lost in thought, you didn’t notice the small cable running across the floor. The bed jolted as you pushed over it, snapping you back to reality.
“God, girl, look where you going!”
“Sorry, sorry. We’re almost there.”
“Take me to basement to kill me, ‘ey? Sound like first husband.”
You laughed, continuing to wheel her carefully into the ECG suites where you would hand over to the technicians. Bidding her a polite farewell you left, heading towards the locker room.
Finally you could return home to Sam. With the embryo transfer tomorrow, you had taken a week's leave to recuperate afterwards. Sam would stay home with you for company, ensuring you didn’t find an excuse to just “pop over” to the hospital.
Maybe this round would be successful, maybe not. You pushed it from your mind as you packed your things and walked through the hospital door, the setting sun shining straight in your face. You could barely see right in front of you, almost missing the figure right in front of you.
"You're a sight for sore eyes, darl"
Sam! There she was, standing by the door with her sunnies on and a bouquet of flowers in hand. She smiled at your shocked face, grabbing the stethoscope from around your neck to bring you in for a kiss.
"Ready to get pregnant?"
"Wha- Sam!"

SAMMY'S GIRL (ii) | s.kerr
summary: MORE headcanons on your relationship with sam, read part one here.
pairing: fem!reader x sam kerr
notes: getting out lots of little headcanons because they're just so much fun to do. sammy's girl is my favourite of all my girls (completely bias, sorry) but if you want to see what other 'wags' are in my lil universes, check out my masterlists!! each 'wag' is also going to get their own tag, so check those out for little file facts, or ask questions/send thoughts so we can add to them all!! lots of love
as previously established, you’ve grown up with sam right
you’ve known her through every little phase and every weird obsession she’s ever had
you know her deepest secrets and she knows yours
its honestly quite jarring because you both know each other better than you know yourselves
you’re not at sporty as sam, only relaly dabbling in school netball for carnivals and stuff when they needed extra girls
but sam would try and include you as much as she could in all aspects of her career
if she was having a solo gym day, or just going on a walk
guess whos coming with!?!!!
its you!!!!!!
if she wants a swim at the beach for recovery
she is making sure that you tag along
(not just to see you in your bathers, its for recovery, have some professionalism please)
sam has spent half of her life without you and having to settle for seeing you through a screen
so once you’re in london with her permanently, she is making the most of that
she needs to shower? you’re passing her body wash
she’s hungry? shes making two servings and you’re eating with her
she wants a coffee? youre heading to your favourite spot
you are always around
and sam isn’t having it if you’re not
when she does have to go away?
youre getting texts from guro, erin and millie complaining about her
‘omg she wont shut up about you’
‘if sam doesn’t stop talking im gonna clock her y/n, i won’t be held responsible for my actions’
‘she’s at a new level of pathetic, please come get your girl’
but they understand, they love you too
the entirety of the chelsea squad know you’re at every game
they have a dedicated seat for you in the family and friends section
everyone is away that it’s your seat
millie’s fiancée wards people away from it
he once had to face the consequences of sitting in your seat
he wouldn’t wish an angry emma hayes or sam kerr upon anyone
but its not all about sam
she is just your biggest cheerleader
you were able to finish your degree online and were lucky enough that your credentials in australia carried over to the uk
so you started working there
im picturing sports journalism???????? you were forced to be around sport your entire life that it kinda just became a natural thing
you were so well-informed on so many different sports it was crazy
sam loved plugging anything you were writing
you posted a new article? she’s sharing that shit on her instagram story
you won an award for a piece? she’s at the ceremony
you’re working overtime to get a project finished? she’s ordering you dinner to the office
as much as sam is a professional and very famous athlete
she’s still just sammy to you
and she’s never forgotten that
but to her, you are the best thing to ever happen to planet earth
and she makes sure that everyone knows
living with sam is lots of fun
you relish in all of the time you get to spend together
call it making up lost time
sure, she leaves her stuff everywhere
but you’re guilty of that too
you still hold each other accountable
‘sam you didn’t do the dishes’
‘okay and you didn’t hang out the laundry’
‘… fair enough’
making dinner together is just chaotic
sam can only cook breakfast, she excels at smashed avocado
so she really lets you take the reins on dinners
she succumbs to the sou-chef life
you force her to watch movies with you
she argues and says that tv shows are better
(even though you know she’s completely invested in whatever film you’ve chosen)
you have a little brother who just idolises sam
and he has since the day he was born
he was a classic accident child, a real surprise for your parents
but watching him grow up was just the best
hes the biggest women’s soccer fan you know
he’s up-to-date on all of the woso drama
definitely can tell you the entire timeline and drama of the mcfoord relationship
so when he’s old enough
sam flies him over to the uk all the time
he just loves sam so much
he wears her jersey to every game, saying he doesn’t want anyone elses
(maybe maccas, but that’s a different story)
and sam is estatic to have him there
definitely walks out with him as her mascot on multiple occasions
sam isn’t super touchy feely in front of others
but when shes drunk, she can’t help it
she just wants to hold you and she doesn’t care who’s around to see it
sam really loves watching men at bars or in clubs try to hit on you
just to go and ruin their fun
it’s her favourite pastime really
sam’s extra sappy and clingy when tired
after a big night or a tiring game, she wants to curl up next to you and have you hold her until she falls asleep
sometimes it’s a foreign feeling for you
sam is almost always the big spoon
so you really drink in the feeling whenever she feels vulnerable enough to let you hold her for a change
sam is also extra attentive when you’re not feeling well
she’s so doting and always checking in on you
if shes around, you’re being waited on hand and foot
‘are you okay? do you have a temp?’
‘let me get you some water’
‘i don’t like the sound of that cough, y/n’
if she’s away for a game, your phone does not stop ringing
she’s always texting when she has a spare minute
and if she has more than ten minutes to spare, she’s calling you to see how you are
sam just adores you
the fans adore you even more
the amount of tiktok edits of you and sam are crazy
the one of you in the stands after her goal against england in the world cup went viral
the way you jumped out of your seat and almost threw yourself over the barrier was on the news the next day
the clip continuing as sam ran over to your section, as you both shouted in celebration to each other
or the clips in the matildas doco series of the two of you
the lesbians went feral for that shit
everyone wants what you have
everyone wants you
you are that bitch
sam knows it too
and she’s not afraid to let people know just who you are
because you’re hers
forever and always

THE SHOWER | s.kerr
summary: caitlin, alannah and mackenzie have taken it upon themselves to plan yours and sam's baby shower.. what could go wrong?! [1.9k words]
pairing: fem!reader x sam kerr (sweet nora universe)
notes: trying to cheer myself up after sam doing her acl, I hope it cheers you all up too. I missed nora lots and lots.
august 2019, 3 months pregnant
IF THERE WERE THREE PEOPLE THAT you would never trust to plan literally anything, it would be Alanna, Mackenzie and Caitlin. The three of them together are like a taking time bomb that just cannot wait to go off. They are loud, messy, chaotic and almost always in disarray.
So when Sam came to you in the third month of your pregnancy and say that the three of them wanted to be the ones to plan your baby shower, you could've fainted then and there.
Sure, Sam had known the three of them for a long time. They were all really close friends of both you and Sam. Sam had been playing with Caitlin since she was 15, she was in your wedding for god's sake- it wasn't a far fetched idea to have them want to do something so big for you both. But with the three of them together, you weren't really sure how successful your baby shower would be.
You and Sam were completely shut out of the planning side of things. They told you nothing, and you mean literally nothing. Alanna had made the invites before even asking (or telling) Sam if they could plan the shower, claiming that she had an untapped passion for graphic design or something like that. All the information on there was all you got.
The shower was going to be held at your home in Perth during Matildas camp for the World Cup. That way all of Sam's teammates could be there and so could your families. A few of Sam's teammates from Chicago would fly out, Mackenzie ensuring their arrivals. By the time the shower came around you had been shunned away to Sam's parents house to get ready for your day.
Alanna had taken the liberty of finding you a dress, knowing exactly the kind of clothes that you would feel comfortable but confident in at 3 months pregnant. You slipped on your outfit and were subtly impressed with what Alanna had chosen for you.
"Wow, hello you" You couldn't help yourself but to let a smile fall upon your lips as Sam wolf-whistled at you as she came into her old bedroom. You were stood in front of the mirror, fixing up your hair before you left for the baby shower. Sam was dressed in a beige button up shirt with a pattern on it paired with some white linen shorts that you loved her in. She looked so gorgeous.
"Do you like it?" You asked, giving her a little spin.
"You look incredibly beautiful" She nodded softly as she grabbed hold of your hips and pulled you in closer. She placed a quick kiss on your lips before pulling away and hovering over them again. "Like stunning" She whispered, before kissing you again.
"I love you" You leant your forehead against hers, not wanting this moment to pass from you both.
"I love you more" She smiled.
"Are you two ready to head off?" Rox called up the stairs. You were driving in with Rox and Maddie, who were both waiting for you two downstairs.
"Yep! Give us like five minutes" Sam called back. You chuckled and leant into her embrace, leaning against her as she held you tight.
"Are you excited?" Sam said quietly, trying her best to saviour your time together before you went into a sea of people for the late morning.
"I'm more so nervous to see what they've done to our house" You closed your eyes and imagined the chaos that could only be caused by Cait, Alanna and Mackenzie.
"It's just a brunch babe" Sam kissed your forehead, already knowing what you were thinking. "Worst thing could be that they haven't put coasters out on the table" She admitted.
"It's really nice timber, Sam" You defended yourself and your over-protectiveness of your breakfast bar. Sam had it custom made for you when you said that you had always wanted one. It really was your first child in a way.
"Don't worry, I already warned Cait about the timber" Sam droned, rolling her eyes at you. "She's said she'll protect it with her life".
"She better" You raised your eyebrows.
"I doubt she would mess with Mrs Kerr" Sam smacked your bum lightly before leading you out from her childhood room and into the car.
"Oh I love it when you call me that"
You couldn't stop the butterflies in your belly from fluttering around, although you weren't sure if you baby was just moving around more than usual. The house looked amazing when you pulled up at the front. The garden had been decked out in balloons, a sign next to the front door that said 'Y/N & SAM'S BABY SHOWER' in a beautiful handwritten font.
You held your hands over your mouth in shock as you got out of the car with Sam's help. "Oh my god it looks so good," You could've sworn that there were tears welling up in your eyes.
Before you could even take it in fully, Alanna, Mackenzie and Caitlin opened the front door and cheered for your arrival.
"It looks so good!" You exclaimed, bringing all of them in for a bone-crushing hug. You were beyond impressed and far past grateful.
"We clean up nice" Macca chuckled, hugging you tightly.
"Do you wanna like have some faith in us?" Alanna laughed, rolling her eyes at you.
"I was nervous" You admitted, shrugging awkwardly.
"She was so nervous" Sam reiterated.
"Trust the process, Y/N" Caitlin said before leading both you and Sam inside.
The house looked amazing. There were fresh flowers throughout the entry way with more decorations strung up. You spied a few games set up on various tables before entering the back garden. You had to have had over thirty girls waiting for you and Sam in the back garden. Your close friends were there, as well as lots of Sam's teammates, members of your family sprinkled throughout.
You squealed as you spied some of your older friends who you hadn't had the chance to see in a while. Sam smiled as she watched you catch up with your mates, looking radiant.
"It looks just amazing guys," Sam brought the three of her friends in for a hug. "Thank you so so much" She smiled.
"We need to start charging for events I reckon" Macca chuckled.
"Oh yeah, definitely" Cait nodded in agreeance.
"So what do you need from me?" Sam asked, ready to go into mum-mode and help out her girls for the morning.
"Nothing" Cait shrugged. "Can you relax skip? It's your baby shower. Go sit with your wife and chill. Brunch will be out soon"
"How did you manage to order so much food for so early" Sam asked, the curiosity eating inside at her.
"We're making it" Caitlin said.
"Wait, what?"
You would be lying if you said you weren't nervous that Caitlin might burn down your kitchen. There seemed to be lots of raised voices coming from inside your home, majority coming from Lani telling the girls that they had been cooking the bacon for too long. A few of Sam's teammates offered their help. Emily headed in and started to bring out what was hot (and not burnt) with Steph running inside to save the day- her mimosa in hand.
Everyone was determined to not let you inside and look at the carnage you were convinced was happening in your kitchen. Instead, Sam just held your hand and distracted you by talking with your friends and family.
Soon enough, brunch was served and you were pleasantly surprised. Macca ended up coming out late to eat, still with an apron on, claiming she was just tidying up a little. You knew there was probably more than a little bit of tidying to do, and you were okay with that.
Since being pregnant, you found yourself needing more control over situations, but right now in this moment you were grateful that you and Sam had such beautiful friends who were willing to, not only put on such events for you both, but to make sure you were relaxed and enjoying yourself as they did.
After brunch the games began. Caitlin had the idea of a blindfolded nappy change race. You never thought you would see Hayley Raso facing off against Lydia Williams in who could change a baby doll's nappy the fastest. Lydia smoked her for the record.
Alanna had hidden baby photos of you and Sam around the garden for guests to find. To say you were shocked to have a picture of two-year-old sam sitting in your esky was an understatement.
Mackenzie wanted everyone to decorate a one-suit for your bub. You had Clare Polkinghorne claiming hers was the best as she drew a little tillies kit with her number on the back on hers. Sam tried her best to draw little hearts all around hers, but ended up with some red splotches more so than hearts- you loved it.
The shower went on for a while, way longer than you would have anticipated. It was an absolute hit and you were so grateful to have had to thrown for you.
As the night was winding down you found Cait, Macca and Lani cleaning up the kitchen together so you and Sam wouldn't have to.
"Hey," You said as the girls all turned around to face you. "Thank you so much for today. You have no idea how much it means to me that you guys did all of this"
"Stop it!" Macca exclaimed, reaching out to put a hand on your growing bump. "This is our niece of nephew we're talking about! Of course we wanted to do this" She gave you an extra squeeze before grabbing her dishes again to wash.
"I'm just so so happy" You looked at them all.
"So you had a good time?" Alanna asked, bringing you in for another hug.
"Such a good time" You smiled as you leant against her shoulder. You were so grateful.
"Good we're glad," She smiled at you once you pulled away, "Now get out of the kitchen so you don't combust watching Mackenzie attempt to wash dishes" She nodded over at Mackenzie who was trying her best to scrap at a pan that had definitely seen better days.
You offered them all another thank you before heading out into the garden again. You could here Mackenzie start to bicker with Alanna as you left.
"I'm actually really good at washing dishes" She defended herself.
"Not sure if that's really a brag there Macca" Lani shot back.
It became late in the afternoon before everyone had really started to head off. You and Sam were left sat in the back garden together, watching Macca, Caitlin and Lani as they picked up the last few things around the house.
"They're so good to us" You smiled, leaning your head against Sam's shoulder.
"They're good chicks" Sam nodded, never having felt so content that she did in that moment.
"Can't believe in six months we'll have a baby" You marvelled.
"Can't believe in six months our baby is going to have more than three aunties" She scoffed.
"That's on you there skip" You raised your eyebrows at her as a smirk grew on her lips.
"What can I say?" She shrugged, "I've got good teammates".
"The best teammates"

A WINNER | s.kerr
summary: after sam's loss to sweden, you and the rest of the team embark on a night out to celebrate their world cup journey [1.1k words]
pairing: fem!reader x sam kerr
notes: long awaited part two!
IT WAS A WIN IN YOUR EYES. sam took it as a loss, so did the other girls; but you knew that to the nation, it was a win. you didn't need hardware to win the hearts of your entire country.
so, you tried your best to perk up your love as you headed off into the nightlife. they were all exhausted, but chose to drown their tired bodies in vodka and other spirits. sam chose to keep a beer in her hand as you began your night together.
"I still can't believe you're here" sam had her hand around your waist, her hand rested on your hip-bone as she held you close to her frame. she leant her head into yours as she stood behind you, drinking you in after being apart.
you chuckled, leaning back into her hold. "I wouldn't miss your last game for the world my love" you tried your best to keep your voice low, wanting to savour this intimate moment, but the baseline from the songs blasting in the bar you all had piled into was a level of noise you couldn't compete with.
"thank you for coming," you noted the seriousness in her tone and turned around to look at her. as you took her in, you noticed the tears that has glazed over her eyes.
"sam-"
"I'm sorry I didn't win,"
you almost scoffed in her face. "sam, are you serious?" you asked. there were no coherent thoughts going through your head quick enough to respond properly.
"I really wanted to win"
"sam, you did" you nodded, pulling her head closer to yours. "you have no idea," you heard her sniff as she pulled you in closer and held onto you tighter.
"I love you so much" she spoke in your ear, your body involuntarily shivered from her warmth breath against your skin.
"I love you more," you told her, giving her another squeeze before pulling back to kiss her. you held her neck with both of your hands, relishing in having sam back with you. "sam-" you pulled back so you could look at her.
she waited for you to speak.
"I think we should get married" you told her. she blinked a few times, taking in what you had just said to her; she was in complete shock. "sam, I- will you marry me?" you asked.
"y/n-"
you reached out into your pocket and pulled out your phone, pulling up a picture that had been locked away in your 'hidden' album on your phone. you turned it around to show sam the golden ring you had hidden away from her months ago.
"if you want to," you shrugged, looking up at her again to meet her gaze. "this is waiting back home in London for you" you chuckled. your heartbeat slowed as you watched sam go from a state of shock into one of happiness as she broke out into a big grin.
she laughed, wrapping her arms around you and lifting you up and into her arms. sam kissed you again, stronger than before. you heard alanna cheering you both on in the background. as you and sam pulled apart you both laughed at sam's teammates calling out to you both playfully.
"yes," she nodded, "of course I'll marry you"

SHATTERED | s.kerr
summary: sam has ruptured her acl and you are the first person she calls
pairing: fem!reader x sam kerr
notes: me at work literally wanting to cry, for all my mourners. my heart going out to sammy.
YOU WERENT EXPECTING SAM TO CALL. She was in Morocco for training and you hadn’t heard from her much, knowing she was in her element. You had seen the pictures and videos of her training, she looked great. When you had the chance to speak to her she said she felt great.
So when your phone rang and Sam was sobbing on the other end, you knew something was wrong.
But you never expected her to say what she did.
“My ACL,” She sobbed, “I’ve fucking ruptured it”
Your heart dropped.
“What?” You were in shock.
Suddenly it all hit at once and you felt like throwing up. “Do you want me to come to you? Are you okay? What the fuck happened?” You felt bad for bombarding her with so many questions, but in the moment you didn’t even notice. You just wanted to know what was going through her head.
“Please come” She cried, “Please” She had never sounded so small. “I’ll pay for it,” She was so silly, “I n-need you.”
You were on a flight in the next two hours.
The three hours on that plane felt like the longest, most gruelling hours of your life. Three hours without hearing from Sam, not knowing what was happening or if she was alright.
You landed and almost strangled the taxi driver for going ten kilometres under the speed limit. You just wanted to get to Sam. When you finally did, Millie was waiting for you in the hotel lobby.
You held onto her for longer than you usually would. You didn’t even get a chance to properly congratulate her on her engagement. She didn’t mind though, knowing that you were close to tears about Sam. Millie took you up to the hotel room where Sam had just been taken back to.
Millie explained what had happened, she saw the whole thing. Your heart felt like it was in your throat listening to her. Your poor girl.
You were quiet going into the hotel room. Millie didn’t follow you in. The lights were off and the curtains were shutting out the Moroccan sun. There was Sam, sitting in bed, her entire leg in a massive brace, just like when she was a teenager. crutches were sitting against the bedside table.
She was crying still, hadn’t even looked up to see who it was. You slowly put your bags down and walked to the other side of the bed, hopping in as gently as you could not to jostle her.
You pulled her into your chest and held her as tight as you could. “I’m so sorry my love,”
She just cried. No words were said.
Just you, repeating “I am so so sorry”.

YOU'RE NOT YOURSELF | s.kerr
summary: you're not well, but you still go out to watch sam's game; but when she finds out you've come out when you're sick, she drops everything to take care of you [966 words]
pairing: fem!reader x sam kerr
notes: love some hurt/comfort x
LONDON WAS COLDER THAN YOU REMEMBER. the last time you were here, the winds weren’t this harsh- you could’ve sworn it. the winter months in england had returned with vengeance, and you were their newest victim.
the chelsea scarf you had wrapped around your neck wasn't enough to stop the cold air penetrating your skin, making you shiver. it was your first time back in london after being way in australia for the world cup, you missed its warm nights already.
you were sat in the family and friends section of chelsea, ready to watch sam play in a friendly; her first game back after missing the pre-season match against roma.
on the plane-ride home, you had began to feel lethargic. you chalked it up to being stuck on an aeroplane with sam for a whole day, but now that you had landed and had the day to get back into your routine, the feeling hadn't faded and you were feeling worse.
the chelsea and tottenham girls came out onto the pitch for the anthems before the game started and you swore you were going to get hypothermia from standing in the cold. the game went slower than any other game you had watched before. sam played well, she always did- but it was jessie flemming who put the game to rest with the first goal of the game in the eighty-seventh minute.
you and the other wives and girlfriends, headed down towards the changerooms to meet the girls. levi, millie’s partner shot you a concerned look before speaking.
“you all good, y/n?” he asked, raising his eyebrows. he had seen how much you had been struggling through the match. never up on your feet like you usually were or cheering as loud; and when he did talk to you during the match, he noticed how pale your skin had grown and how hoarse your voice was.
you blinked a few times before looking at levi. clearing your throat, you respond: “yeah, i’m fine”. a lie.
levi pat you on the back twice before chuckling softly, a tell-tale sign he knew you weren’t telling the truth. “yeah,” he nodded, “sure”.
you watched as the girls sung the club song in a circle and broke away from each other with loud cheers; each person off to find their family or friends. sam’s eyes scanned the changeroom before landing on you. you were leant against the wall right near the door, guro just having made her way over to say hello to you. sam rolled her eyes, she would get to you before sam had the chance to.
“you don’t sound well,” guro took in your appearance, “quite pale”.
you tried your best to brush her off, “i’m fine.” you smile was more tired than happy, sam noticed as she made her way over to you both.
“hey pretty lady,” sam pulled you in. as she went to kiss you, you turned your head slightly and kissed her cheek instead. sam was a little taken back, but let it go anyway- seeing how tired you looked. guro had left the two of you alone, knowing that sam would want to have you to herself. “you’re shivering,” sam chuckled, pulling you into her embrace, “it’s not that cold outside, drama queen”. you did your best to laugh at her joke without completely falling into her arms. having just played an entire ninty minutes, sam was toasty against your frosted skin.
“it’s freezing,” you quipped back at her.
“give me ten minutes to shower and we’ll leave, yeah?” she pulled away slightly to look at your face. you didn’t say anything in response, only nodded. sam paused for a second, taking in your demeanour. your face was flushed from the cold and your eyes were tired. “you okay?” she asked.
“i’m just tired,” you shrugged, clearing your throat again afterwards. sam continued to look at you, like she was trying to search for something wrong. she knew that jet-lag usually kicked your ass, but this felt different to her. she let out a quiet hum before kissing your forehead. “i’ll be quick, okay?” she raised her eyebrows.
“go,” you chuckled, “you stink”.
“when i smell like this, it means i’m paying our bills” sam gently pushed you away with a smile, walking towards the showers.
true to her word, sam took around ten minutes to shower and come back out to you; rugged up in her training hoodie and pants. hand in hand, you left the stadium and went back to your car. your nose was running from the walk back to the car park, the winds only getting worse as the night dwindled.
“you’re all sniffly, babe” sam squeezed your hand, looking over at you.
you laughed, sniffing again, “it’s the wind!” you tried to defend yourself, “it’s freezing here. i miss being home already, it’s too cold”.
“it’s not that cold, babe” sam chuckled, realising that your nose had gotten more red since she first saw you after the game. “you alright?” she asked you as you finally reached the car.
“yeah,” you sniffed, “just tired”. you were starting to sound worse and sam was noticing it.
“babe,” sam stopped you from walking to the drivers side of the car. “are you feeling okay? you don’t look good”.
you knew there was no point in lying to her anymore, sam wasn’t stupid; but you didn’t want her to worry. “i think i’m getting sick” you sigh.
“you think?” she smiles, looking at you with a smug grin. “i could’ve told you that,” she nodded.
“whatever,” you roll your eyes and walk to your side of the car. sam makes it a point to blast the heater once you’ve started the car. you hold your hands in front of your air vent for a moment before starting to drive home. sam plays some of her music on a low volume, not sure if you have a headache or not. she keeps her hand on your thigh as you drive back to her apartment, constantly sneaking you worried glances as you sniff and stifle coughs.
helen purrs as you put your bag down on the kitchen bench, you scratch her head with a soft smile. sam drops her bags in the entry way, a habit that you wish she didn’t have, before coming over behind you and wrapping her arms around your waist. she places a soft kiss on your cheek, resting her chin on your shoulder. “let’s go to bed,” she whispered. you lean your head against hers before letting out a deep sigh, nodding your head slowly.
you tell sam you wanna have a shower before bed. she can hear you coughing over the sound of the water hitting the tiled floor. while you’re gone, sam shuffles through her kitchen cabinets, trying to look for some medicine for you to take. she finds some nyquil from when she had the flu in december and takes it into your bedroom, ready to ambush you with it once you get out.
sam has the heater on in the bedroom for you when you finally make your way into your bedroom. you’re drying your hair, when sam looks up from her phone to see you.
“are you kidding?” she asks, quickly sititng up from her spot on the bed, “tell me you didn’t wash your hair”. you stop in your tracks, watching as sam stomps into the bathroom. “you can’t go to sleep with wet hair, y/n” her voice echoes from the ensuite into your bedroom, “you’ll get worse”. when she comes back, she has a hairdryer in her hand. shaking her head, sam plugs it in and sits you down at your vanity. you close your eyes and try not to fall asleep as sam dries your hair for you. the hot air sends your cold body into a euphoric state, as sam runs her fingers through your hair.
you sniff before taking a deep breath and letting out a sneeze into your elbow. sam whistles before chuckling, “bless you! that was a good one.” she smiles. you shake your head at her before letting her finish up.
once she was happy with how dry your hair was, she picked out some clothes for you to wear to bed. sam made you take your medicine before climbing into bed with you. she switched on the tv, putting on the west coast game she hadn’t had the chance to watch yet.
you rested your head on her chest, trying your best to stay awake with sam. you coughed into the sleeve of the hoodie sam had given you, the sounds coming from your chest made sam look down at you in worry. “i really don’t like the sound of that” she shook her head, eyebrows furrowed. she switched the tv off halfway through the second quarter, not bothering to watch the rest. you went to protest, knowing how much she had been wanting to watch this game. “come on, you need to go to sleep” she shuffled, getting comfy next to you.
“why’d you turn it off?” you whined.
“because you should be resting, not watching the eagles lose to the crows” she chuckled.
“i was resting,” you argued. sam didn’t bother arguing back, she knew that if she left it you would too. she pulled you into her arms and kissed your forehead, feeling for a fever.
“i’ll get you in to the doctor tomorrow,” sam told you, looking down at your relaxed frame. you had snuggled yourself into sam’s chest, trying to get as much warmth as you could.
“i don’t need to go to the doctor, sam” you smiled softly, your body too tired to laugh.
“fine,” she brought her hand to the back of your head, holding you. “i have recovery in the morning, but i’ll go pick up some stuff for you on my way back, okay?”
“okay,” you let out a deep breath, your nose too blocked to breathe any other way, “i love you,” you said.
sam smiled, still looking down at you, as you grew closer and closer to falling asleep. “i love you too,” she gave you one last kiss on your forehead before letting you doze off.

SAMMY'S GIRL | s.kerr
summary: headcanons on your relationship with sam.
pairing: fem!reader x sam kerr
notes: love these, let me know if you want more. send any asks/thoughts/questions about sammy's girl that you would like to, I would love to chat xx
knowing sam since you were kids (like 7-8)
you hated soccer (refused to call if football)
your family was mad about real football (afl, obviously)
and sam played footy with you at the same club
but when she first started playing soccer at age 12, she fell in love with it
consequentially, forcing you- her best friend
into loving it too
(no matter how much you refused)
bye bye afl
she would talk nonstop about players who she loved
Ronaldo this
ronaldo that
who the fuck is ronaldo
you didnt care
you were just glad sam was happy
you only really started to care, when you realised how talented sam was
even though you hated soccer
you showed interest for her
because wow, she was good
you would go to her games on saturday mornings
wore her club jumper to games
and would sit in the car on cold mornings with her parents
honking the horn if she scored
sometimes cheering out the window
you gradually learnt more and more about the game from sam
it became her entire life
and because sam was your entire life, it became yours too
at sleepovers you both would stay up and watch games
her nudging you awake when you were falling asleep
her shaking you awake if her favourite player scored or there was a dodgy penalty/free
you detested staying up late for soccer games, but if it made sam happy you would do it
as you got older and went to high school, sam was being taken more seriously
local news outlets were getting hold of how talented she was
scouts started coming out to her games
it was suddenly all about sam and her talent
(about time)
you watched her first game for the matildas in 2009 against Italy when she was subbed on
you cried when she stepped on the pitch, screaming as loud as you could
she heard you
that night, hugging her after the game, you realised that sam wasn't just your best friend
you continued to support her as you went through school
sam was playing more and more
it was getting harder to stay in contact
she was flying around the world with the matildas, playing game after game
training after training
match after match
but you didnt mind
because you knew that she would always come back to you
and she did
you spent the time that she had off together
spending december holidays together
christmas at your place, new years at hers
every moment that sam was home she spent with you
thats when she realised that you were more than her best friend
on the night of sam's first goal, she tied the game against north korea
you cried again
you couldn't help it
you were just so proud of her
she backflipped on the pitch, something she had been practicing since you were little
(something she had been trying to teach you do to since you were little)
afterwards, she ran over to near where you were sat in the stands with her family and celebrated with you
you knew you loved her in that moment
that night, in her room
you kissed
you were sharing the hotel bed, both crammed into a king single
like you had done all throughout your childhood
and you told her how proud of her you were
leaning into the silence, sam kissed you
after you both just stared at each other
"I'm sorry" she said
"don't be" you whispered back
and you never spoke about it the next morning
sam went off to play world cups
you stayed home and watched every game you could
messaging her phone throughout
she gained more traction, she was only getting better and better
and she knew that you were always behind her
you were her rock
you kissed again after sam's first world cup
it was on your 17th birthday
it was just the two of you, everyone else had left for the night
"when do you leave again?" you asked her
"I fly to Brisbane next week" she told you
you didnt say anything after that for a while
just sat in silence
you laid facing each other once again, just like you had the year before
and it was unspoken what you both wanted to happen
you moved your head closer to hers
she did the same
"I dont want you to go" you whispered
"I know, but I have to"
"I know"
more silence
"I'll miss you" she said
"I'll miss you more"
in that moment you made up your mind
and you kissed her
"I really like you sam" you told her
"I really like you too"
from then on, you both were unofficially together
there were no labels for your relationship
but everyone already knew that you both were a package deal
sam and y/n
y/n and sam
so no one suspected a thing
it went on like this for years
you went into your 20s together
watched sam become more and more successful
she made strides in her career and was signed to perth glory and then to sky blue
she won awards on awards
scoring more goals than majority of other players
she was a star
sam was traded to chicago
that hit you guys hard
but you weren't together.. so?
what could you do?
you spent every moment you could talking to sam when she was awake
vice versa
sams world involved two things: football and you
no matter the awards or the accolades, you were the biggest prize in her eyes
she thanks you profusely in her young australian of the year speech
she is so grateful every day to have you
as you were trying to stumble your way through uni
sam would try her best to fly you out to games so she could see you
call her selfish
she doesn't care
she just wanted to see you
in 2019 she was signed to chelsea
and whilst you were over there watching a match
the country went into lockdown
you were stuck in London
going home wasn't an option at that point in time
so you stayed with sam
and even after lockdown was lifted
you stayed with sam
you both realised the going back and forth was stupid
you loved each other
she told you so
you were watching an old football match
sam engrossed in the game, trying to watch for technique
when you completely broke her out of her trance by screaming at the ref for a shit free kick
she watched as you shouted at the tv
and then she said without thinking
"I love you"
with the biggest, goofiest grin on her face
you just stared at her, eyes wide
she had told you that she had loved you before
but you both knew that this was different
and so you said "I love you too sam"
that night you finally discussed labels
and sam officially asked you to be her girlfriend
you quite liked having the title after however many years of waiting
but she was worth the wait
so you moved all your stuff over to London when you could and started your life in London with sam
travelling back to Australia when you needed to
or when you missed home a little too much
and you watch every game that you possibly can
and now.. you even call it football

THIRTY LAPS | s.kerr
summary: you celebrate sam's thirtieth birthday [559 words]
pairing: fem!reader x sam kerr
notes: something little for sam's birthday <3
IT WAS TOO EARLY FOR HER phone to be buzzing. sam got up every day at 8:30, nothing allowed to disturb her until then. but here she was, at 7:30 with her phone going off.. over and over and over.
"hello?" her voice was groggy with sleep, you loved her voice most when it sounded like this. you couldn't contain your grin on the other end of the phone.
"happy birthday, my love" you smiled.
all of the frustration that had built up in sam's chest faded away when she realised it was you on the phone. she hadn't even realised that it was her birthday, too tired to register anything yet. she chuckled softly, "thank you babe".
"don't be mad i woke you up, i've been waiting all day to call" sam rested her head back down onto her pillow, holding her phone to her free ear. she imagined you sitting by the phone waiting for an appropriate time to call, it would've taken all of you willpower.
the time-zones between australia and london were difficult, you both often found it hard to find times to talk. whenever you were awake, sam would be working and training, by the time she had finished for the day, you would be ready for bed and trying to stay awake for her call.
"it's okay," she sighed with a smile, "i'm glad you woke me up". sam squinted as she looked to her bright phone screen, clicking the face-time button. you don't accept it. "i'm face-timing you, y/n" she thought you might not have seen it pop up on the screen.
"wait, sorry" your voice crackled, as if you were moving away from the speaker, "give me a second". sam furrowed her eyebrows as she waited for you to pop-up on her screen.
"y/n?" she asked, she couldn't hear you anymore. "y/n?" she called again.
"yeah?"
"oh my god!" she screamed, jumping from her spot on the bed.
there you were, standing in the doorway with a suitcase next to you. "surprise!" you cheered.
"oh my fucking god, babe" sam held her hand to her chest, waiting for her heartbeat to return to its regular pace. she broke out in a grin as she panted in recovery. "what are you doing here?" she laughed.
you found your way over to the bed and crawled up next to her. "it's your birthday," you shrugged, "i wasn't missing this".
sam shook her head in disbelief, "i love you". you smiled, bringing your lips to hers for a kiss. "so much," she mumbled against your plush skin.
"i love you more," you pulled away, whispering.
"thank you so much for coming," sam rested her forehead against yours, revelling in the fact that you were really there with her. not on the other side of the world, but laying in bed next to her; where you should be. "this means so much, y/n".
"i would never not come, sammy" you smiled, "you should've known something was up when i didn't message yesterday".
"you were very strategic with your messages, i thought you were just tired" she chuckled, a big grin crossing her face.
you kissed her again, cutting off her giggles. "happy birthday, baby" you said softly.
sam placed a kiss on your forehead, taking you in. "wouldn't be a good birthday without you here".
