Torn VI
Kewis x Child!Reader
Summary: You go to hospital
Kristie is at training.
Summer holidays usually means preseason for Sam. It usually means a few weeks where the three of you get to do fun things together before going back into preseason.
But with her knee, it means more time lazing around the house with you.
You're having a lot of fun playing dinosaurs with her, not yet changed out of your fuzzy Spinosaurus onesie as one of the Land Before Time episodes plays on the tv.
You drop your toy though and Sam gently moves it away.
Your seizures have gotten easier to deal with now that you've gone on your medicine. They've gone down to maybe two or three every few days and, while you're none the wiser about why your seizures are a bad thing, it makes Kristie and Sam feel safer.
But this one is different.
Usually, your seizures are only a few seconds long but, as Sam checks her phone, she knows it's been a few minutes now.
That's never happened before and, as your mouth opens and closes in repetitive chewing movements, she jerks into action.
There's blood in your mouth.
Blood that definitely shouldn't be there.
She fumbles with her phone for a moment, almost dropping it completely.
"Hello? Yes, er, I need an ambulance! My-My kid's having a seizure and she's bleeding and-and I don't know what to do!"
Questions rattle off the operator's lips faster than Sam can keep up.
"Yes. She's five, nearly six. Er, she's got CAE but this is different. I-I don't know! She's kind of jerking a little bit? And I think she's bitten her cheek because she's bleeding. She's on medication but...Yes, I'm Mum."
Sam rattles off more information, anything she can think of and the operator is nice enough to stay on the phone until the ambulance gets there.
It's only when Sam's at the hospital that she realises Kristie's at training.
Kristie's at training and is none the wiser about what's just happened.
Riding in the ambulance was the scariest thing Sam has ever done with you, far eclipsing the other scariest thing she had ever done with you which was hiding all of Kristie's eyebrow pencils.
You'd had an accident in the ambulance which all the paramedics said was normal. You bit at your cheek again which all the paramedics said was expected.
You'd jerked your little limbs and suddenly looked smaller than your almost six years as you lay in the stretcher in your fuzzy dinosaur onesie.
"Chook, baby," Sam had said in the ambulance," It's going to be okay. Alright? You're going to be alright."
It takes Sam a while to pluck up the courage to call Kristie, to let her know that something's happened to you and now you're in hospital.
Kriste's there within the hour, just as you wake up.
You'd briefly been awake when your seizure was over but so exhausted and so confused, Sam had coaxed you to sleep again.
βMommy,β You say as your eyelids flutter open, reaching out for her.
Kristie grabs your hand quickly, squeezing ever so slightly like sheβs making sure that youβre with her. βHey, chook,β She coos as Sam appears at your other side,β How are you feeling?β
You frown. βMom talked to me,β You say instead.
βHuh?β
βWhen I went all funny. I heard Mom talkinβ to me.β
βYou could hear that, huh, chook?β Sam asks, taking your other hand and you nod.
βYou said I was going to be okay. What happened?β You frown, looking down at yourself. βWhereβs my dino pjs?β
βTheyβre going in the wash, chook,β Sam says,β Theyβ¦They got a bit dirty in the ambulance.β
βAmbulance?β
βYes, the ambulance. Do you remember, chook? Youβ¦You had a pretty badβ¦episode, didnβt you?β
βMy arms went all floppy and weird.β
βThatβs right. That must have been scary, huh?β
You shake you head. βNo, βcause I had Mom saying everything will be okay. Mom doesnβt lie about important things like that.β
Kristie smiles. Itβs a weak smile though and Sam knows that a crying session is inevitable once this is all sorted out. Kristie can hold herself together for you. She has to be strong for you, her little girl that only kind of understands what has happened to her.
βThe doctors are going to come in and have a look at you, alright?β Kristie runs a finger over your nose and you giggle a little bit, going cross eyed to track its slope downwards.
βOkay and then we go back home?β
βMaybe,β Sam says,β Weβll see what they say. They might want to keep you a bit later.β
Itβs not unlike your other doctor appointments, when they put you in the big machine and did tests. The inside of your cheek is a little tender when you run your tongue along it and your arms are kind of bruised and weird looking. You think your head is a little achy too but youβve got pillows behind it so you donβt really notice.
βAnd you think this is a one off?β Kristie says from outside your hospital room, glancing back inside as you and Sam watch another Land Before Time episode on her phone.
βItβs not uncommon for children with CAE to experience other types of seizures. They go away with age-β
βThatβs what they said about the CAE but look at her! Sheβs in hospital. The medsβ¦Theyβre meant to be helping-β
βMiss Mewis,β The doctor says,β I understand completely but these things do happen. Sheβs happy and healthy and weβve got information leaflets to help parents get through this kind of thing. We recommend a follow up with her neurologist and GP just to be on the safe side but this is all normal. Plenty of people live with seizures every day.β
Kristie releases a noisy breath. βRight. Yes. How soon until we go home?β
βTomorrow should be good. We can set up a bed for one of your to stay here with her overnight but this is all just precaution. As long as everything is a-okay tomorrow morning, we can get you all in your way.β
βThank you,β Kristie says,β Iβll just go in and tell her.β
You look up as Kristie comes in, head tilting to the side and hair falling over your eyes. βMommy?β
βIβm going to stay here with you tonight,β Kristie says, sitting on the bed with you,β And then tomorrow, weβre going to go home. Sound good?β
You think for a moment. βAnd then my dino pjs will get washed?β
βIβll wash them tonight,β Sam promises you,β And Iβll make sure theyβre all toasty warm for you when you get home tomorrow.β
βOkay,β You say,β We can stay here for the night.β

Chook's Halloween
Kewis x Child!Reader
Summary: The thirteenth of my Halloween-centric fics
"Looking good, Sam!" Erin whistles," Indiana Jones!"
Sam rolls her eyes. "Don't say that with Chook around. She won't be very happy."
"Huh? Why?"
"Because I'm not Indiana Jones."
"Yes, you are. You're all-" Erin makes a vague gesture "-Sexy."
Sam laughs. "Well don't let Kristie hear you say that."
"If you're not Indiana Jones then who are you?"
"Owen Grady."
"Who?"
"Owen Grady."
"Who's that? Your neighbour?"
"No," Sam replies, rolling her eyes," The guy from Jurassic World."
Clarity dawns in Erin's eyes. "Oh, so this is a Chook costume."
"Yeah," Sam admits," It's a Chook costume. She was very excited. Kristie's meant to be Claire, Helen's Maisie."
"And Chook's a dinosaur?"
Sam sighs. "And Chook's a dinosaur."
The door to the gym swings open again and someone shrieks.
You trot in, arms lifted up like a dinosaur.
"Well," Erin says," That's certainly-"
"Blue!" You say, pulling up your velociraptor mask to reveal your face," I'm Blue, Erin! From Jurassic World! Rawr!"
Your excitement is palpable as you run around the gym in my dinosaur costume.
"Should I know who Blue is?" Erin asks as she watches you sneak up behind Millie to scare her.
"It's the velociraptor from Jurassic World," Sam explains," The one that doesn't die."
"They die?"
"Yeah but don't bring it up to Chook. It makes her cry."
Halloween is always hit or miss for you.
You either enjoy it so much you're bursting from happiness or you're too scared to even watch some Halloween movies with your mothers and spend your time curled up with Helen and your toys.
Sam doesn't want this ruined for you even if it's just an accidental comment on Erin's part.
"Mom!" You call and Sam turns to give you some attention.
"Yes, Chook?"
"Mom, look! I'm a dinosaur! Rawr!"
"Wow," Sam says in mock shock," You really scared me there, Chook."
"Don't worry, Mom," You say, patting her side," I'm not actually a real dinosaur. It's just a mask. See." You pull your mask up so Sam can see your face. "It's still me."
Sam looks down at you with a fond smile, lightly ruffling your hair and tugging at the tail at the back of your costume. "Well I'm glad it's still you Chook. I'd hate to have to explain to Mommy that we've got a little dinosaur now and not a little girl."
"Don't worry," You tell her," I'm not old enough for be a full dinosaur yet. Maybe next year though."
Sam laughs, sliding your mask back over your face. "Maybe next year."
Training is lots of fun with everyone so impressed by your dinosaur costume and the staff even give you lots of sweeties even though you didn't Trick-or-Treat them.
"Mommy!" You call as Sam unlocks the apartment door," Mommy, we're back!"
Kristie pops her head around the wall. "Oh, wow, Chook, looking good."
"Silly, Mommy," You rebuke her, giggling as she flutters kisses over your face," You saw me this morning."
"And I can't think you're still looking good? Maybe you're the silly one Chook."
"You're not dressed yet," You look at Kristie through narrowed eyes," You have to dress up, Mommy. It's a family costume. It can't just be me, Mom and Helen."
Kristie laughs. "There's plenty of time. We've still got to eat dinner before we go trick or treating."
You huff, blowing out all of your air noisily. "But that's ages away!"
Kristie ruffles your hair, taking your mask from you to put on the side. "Well little dinosaurs like you can't go out trick or treating without being fully fed. You might eat everyone!"
"Silly, Mommy. I'm not big enough to eat people yet."
"I don't look the way she said 'yet'," Sam snickers to Kristie before addressing you," Well, you won't get big enough to do that if you don't eat. Mommy's cooked us some dino nuggies."
You narrow your eyes in thought, darting them between Sam and Kristie.
"Triceratops nuggies?"
"Uh-huh."
You nod. "Good because they're herbivores. Carnivores like me eat herbivores!"
