I'm doing a timed release of prints of my White House painting, from my recent show QUARANTINE at Spoke Art in New York. From right now through 10 am, Thursday, October 22nd, they will be available right here. 10% of the proceeds from these prints will be donated to causes supporting democracy in the United States. It's been super important to me, during this completely insane time, not just to document in my work what I see happening here in America, but to try and do something to change it. Despite being largely stuck in my own house (because of an unprecedented global pandemic, you might have heard something about it), I can't just sit by as cities burn, democracy comes to a sputtering stop, and our nominal leader retreats into his house with the lights turned off. I know many of you, perhaps most of you, feel this same way. So grab a print. Donate some money. Most importantly, vote. Please vote! Let's send 2020 off in the manner it deserves, with a full Viking funeral, and then let's never talk about it again. I want to get back to painting semi-futuristic dystopias that DON'T feel like they're happening right now. Thanks, and stay safe out there!

Finishing this little painting for a group show based on the films of Hayao Miyazaki. Not sure how the show will be viewed with the current social distancing in effect, but it was nice to take my mind off things for a few hours and get back to traditional painting. This guy is one of my favorite characters from Miyazaki’s films. The wonderful folks at @spoke_art and @powwowhawaii were nice enough to invite me to their 9th annual Moleskin show which opens this Tuesday. Just about everything I do these days is done digitally so it was a nice challenge to break out the inks, paints, and brushes again to do something by hand. I love everything tiki so my piece features some of my favorite mugs filled with some fiery drinks. It’s called ‘Tiki Time’ and was done with india ink and acrylic. I’ve gotten to see some other sketchbooks in the show and my mind was blown with the level of creativity and detail the talented group of artists were able to execute in such a small amount of space. Young(er) Yubaba 12x18″ Acrylic on paper 2020 for Spoke Art’s Miyazaki In NYC exhibition at Hashimoto Contemporary which, due to the current situation is now taking place online. I imagined that since the Yubaba we meet in Spirited Away is super old, a 65 yr old Yubaba would be young (and not powerful enough yet to fly), and that she quarreled with her father the proprietor of the Magic World’s bathhouse for the last time and set out for the train station with her luggage destined for Paris in the Human World. There, living in the scenic Montmartre quartier atop Paris she falls in love with an Argentine wizard, drinking wine and laughing into the night with the well dressed artistic crowd. Her father falls ill and her twin sister Zaniba (10 seconds younger) is too irresponsible to run the bathhouse. A 67 and a half year old Yubaba torn between familial duty and intense Human World Parisian love returns to the Magic World to become proprietress of the bathhouse, living for centuries more, with the bitterness of her sacrifice hardening and blackening her heart more each day until we meet her at the cinema in Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.
