The main cast getting gitty and excited over the prospects of ST5 having a satisfying ending, and Winona mentioning the ending of Schitt’s Creek specifically as what they’d hope to shoot for similarly, Sadie and Gaten agreeing like YES LIKE SCHITT’S CREEK, Finn cutting in like yeah we’re the Schitt’s Creek of Netflix with Noah looking excited but visibly nervous, all while Brett cackles and David is just going 🤠☝️in the background, is all the byler endgame evidence I’ll ever need.

YES. Also I want to elaborate a bit on this, in a different direction:

but i think it's super important too that izzy's healing is worth it without romantic love.

That's kind of the big kicker for the whole redemption arc, for me.

Because way too often you see redemption arcs having to culminate in the Redeemed Party being rewarded with everything they wanted all along, usually including romantic love (from the person they've been chasing all along and have finally "become worthy" of).

And while it's not an inherently BAD kind of story to tell, it's wildly overdone. It's tropey. It's often done really poorly such that the love interest is just treated like a prize. Congrats on not being an asshole anymore! Here's your sexy damsel reward. What, she should have agency in the decision and it doesn't make sense for her to suddenly fall all over you? shush that's not how Just Rewards work! You're a Good Person now so you deserve that hottie, how SHE feels about it is irrelevant! (it's usually a woman, of course. If OFMD had gone there it wouldn't be, but if that were the only divergence from the trope, I think it would still feel just as cheap and weird)

I honestly barely dared to hope for a redemption arc like we got -- one that doesn't just culminate in a big ol' pile of rewards. All past bad actions erased like they never happened, everyone's feelings heart-eyed, Redeemed Party's love interest falls at their feet. Rather, one that requires accepting not being able to have what they wanted, the wanting of which drove them to the actions they need redemption for. One where that acceptance is part of what proves that the redemption is real growth and change, not just putting on a pretense for a more effective way of manipulating the world into giving them what they want.

I expected that Izzy would die at the end of s2. The narrative structure always suggested that ending for his part in the story. He's an inverted mirror of Mary in s1, the active antagonist to her passive antagonist, each causing problems for their respective protagonists who also have an inverted-mirror relationship in characterization and arc. Different in key ways, but very alike. That's a whole other post, this would get too long if I did that tangent here, but anyway.

I didn't expect him to get a redemption. I expected him to stay an antagonist and die a villain.

I hoped, though, that maybe I was wrong and we'd get the kind of redemption arc I've wanted to see for a long time, and chronically found most redemption-arc stories to fall far short of.

We got it. Nearly exactly as I would have most loved to see it written. It's BEAUTIFUL. It's real. It's actually believable that Izzy really, truly has figured out how much he screwed up and has changed and healed. It took a lot to get him to the point of finally being receptive to it (considering how thick a repression wall he had built up, it's not surprising it took a wrecking ball to break it down), but he got there. I kept expecting them to pull a gotcha, to un-redeem him somehow, and if they had it still could have been a satisfying story. It would have been a much more typical story.

I'm still having a hard time believing that they really fucking did that. They pulled it off. Holy shit.

all right. i'm ready to talk about izzy.

izzy is a great character. in s1 he sits in this great position as an antagonist that's close to the main characters, and in s2 he sits in this great position as an antagonist who's gotten everything he wanted, and found that actually - fuck! - that's not it at all. the world changes enough in s1 that there's no satisfaction in izzy getting what he wants out of blackbeard. and it's not just ed that's changed, it's not just the crew, izzy himself is fundamentally changed too. even before s2, and that change continues to grow and flourish through the series.

in reality, death is cruel. and death is senseless. and death is unfair, and shitty, and it happens to the wrong people at the wrong time, too early, with too much to live for, who mean too much to too many. it happens.

maybe izzy's death is all of those things, but i don't think that's the point. it's not meant as a lesson in mortality; it's not meant as retribution for past crimes; it's not meant as a commentary on who deserves to live and who deserves to die. it's not about deserving. if anything, it's about the fact that deserving doesn't come into it at all.

the point is that izzy healed.

a lot has been made of the fact that izzy is the only character who bears visible scars from the kraken era - the scar on his head, as well as the leg. but i don't think they're meant as a reminder of the injury, or as a sign that izzy is "damaged" post-kraken era. they're representative of the fact that izzy healed. the scar is there to remind you that izzy survived. you see it heal over multiple episodes because that's the work izzy is doing - he's healing from blackbeard's actions, from his own actions, from his history, from his constraints.

it's not too late to heal. it's not too late to find your place. it's not too late to come out. it's not too late to let people in. it's not too late.

and all those things are worth doing despite the fact that our time here is limited. we are all going to die. but we are here right now, which means it's not too late, and it is worth it to free ourselves to be who we need to be regardless of who we have been and who we are now and what time we might have left.

izzy isn't suicidal in ep 8. he's healed from that. izzy isn't abused or depressed or alone in ep 8. izzy is strong, and competent, and respected, and loved.

and some folks have been disappointed it's not romantic love. i get that. but i think it's super important too that izzy's healing is worth it without romantic love. familial, platonic love is so fundamentally important to the queer community. found family. friends. solidarity. the look when some stranger sees you and you see them and you both know the other is family, that they're safe. the way we fight for each other - for our rights to love who we want, fuck who we want, to marry, to adopt kids, and also for housing, for jobs, for healthcare. for our rights to use the bathroom, for our rights to choose our own names and our own bodies and our own families. we're fighting for our right to exist and that, guys, it's not romantic. the foundations of our community is about - well, i'll let izzy say it:

it's not about glory, it's not about getting what you want. it's about belonging to something when the world has told you you're nothing. it's about finding the family to kill for when yours are long dead. it's about letting go of ego for something larger. the crew.

ed and izzy, following s2e3, interact and communicate on izzy's terms, and that's made clear. that's the last relationship for izzy to heal. when izzy finally approaches ed in ep 6, it's - not great. it's a start. you gotta start somewhere. he lets ed apologize, in their very closed, guilty way of speaking to each other, but then goes back to the crew, back to his safety.

he finally finishes his healing arc with the drag performance and la vie en rose, and then he and ed DO have good moments. he teases ed about stede. he directly reverses his previous actions in s1 and tells ed to listen to his good feelings. that's where djenks is getting this (imo, still a bit weird) father-figure business. the scene in the republic where ed's watching fishermen and izzy comes to say hey, it's all right, hey, listen to your gut. they don't need to directly come out and have some deep serious conversation about their relationship because that's just not like them, man. they're doing their healing their way. i think it would be nonsensical to expect these two to be open and honest with each other regardless of how they are with everyone else because their relationship is not like their relationships with anyone else.

until they run out of time.

and this, i think, is important. izzy controls this last conversation because it's what ed needs to hear, because izzy no longer needs to hear it. izzy doesn't need to hear that ed's sorry, izzy knows ed's fucking sorry. ed's whole arc this season is about the guilt he's carrying. izzy says what he says because he knows ed needs to hear it. ed, you weren't a monster all on your own. ed, i saw you. i saw you outgrowing him, and i didn't want that to happen because i was worried about what it meant for me, but i see now that it could have meant this all along - family. balance. something to die for, sure, but something to live for.

you could argue that ed and the crew don't think of each other as family. i think it's a bit more complicated than a yes or no on that one, but when izzy says, ed, you're surrounded by family, maybe it doesn't matter whether that's fact. maybe it's a statement of possibility. look at this family who can love you if you let them. look at this family who will forgive you even when you don't deserve it. look at all the ways you can still heal. look at how worth it it all is.

just be ed, izzy says, there he is.

he says it to ed because izzy already knows he can be just izzy. izzy already knows he's dying surrounded by family. izzy already knows that love and belonging and family are worth it, and he uses his dying moments to make sure ed knows it too because despite everything, despite everything he did and despite everything ed did and despite not being ed's romantic choice, he loves ed. it's worth it to use his dying moment to make sure ed knows this because izzy loves him.

it's worth it.

izzy is the stand-in for the stereotypical pirate, the villain - the representative of how repression and oppression work together, of how race and class and colonization interact with each other, of the lines between love and obsession and power and rage and fear blurring beyond recognition - and he heals. guys, the point of his story is not that he was all those things and paid that price. the point of his story is that he could grow beyond all those things and that growth and healing was all worth it despite the fact that yeah. our lives will inevitably end.

historically, israel hands is said to be one of the only major pirates who survives the golden age of piracy, and he doesn't survive it well - according to the contemporary account of "captain charles johnson" (almost certainly a pseudonym) in A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the most notorious Pyrates, published 1724, hands dies a beggar in london sometime between 1719 and 1724. it has been suggested by some pirate scholars that hands may have actually been the source for much of the information johnson is able to relay regarding blackbeard - and that johnson's apparent wealth of information contributed significantly to the legacy blackbeard left behind and his lasting fame. i had actually really hoped to see this play out in ofmd - izzy protecting ed and stede through perpetuating stories about blackbeard's 'death' (fake, i'd hoped) and legacy.

but i think - he is. in his way. he's there on the hillside, keeping watch. he's there to hold all the stories and all the memories of pirates and what it meant to belong to something, even as the golden age of piracy sets. he's there to show what it is to love and to be loved in return: eternal.

i don't like that izzy died. i think he's a great character, i think he's great fun to have in the ensemble, i think his dynamics with ed and stede are so fucking chewy and delicious. i think con o'neill has done the work of a lifetime on this character and, i hope, had and continue to has the experience of a lifetime with this fandom. my heart goes out to those of you who are devastated; i've been there in past fandoms, i know how achingly difficult that is. i'm so sorry.

but izzy's story is worth telling. izzy's story is worth celebrating. izzy is about making mistakes - bad mistakes! - and finding your way back to something better. izzy is about healing, and about community, and about hope that even when things are shit and people are shit - they can change. things can change.

and maybe - yeah. it's about the role stories play in our lives. about using fictional little scenarios to deal with our traumas. we're here. we're alive. we're coping. we will heal.

RAMBLING THOUGHTS AFTER FINISHING PART TWO. GONNA ADDRESS MY P1 THOUGHTS FIRST. SPOILER WARNING.

1 & 2: I think Debling could’ve worked in the second half, and I’m kinda sad Cressida didn’t get a happy ending. The Creloise fell of a CLIFF after ep 5 but I think it could still be saved

5: no cishet man has ever loved his wife more than Anthony Bridgerton I’m gonna be ill

6 & 12: kanthony’s absence was felt BAD in the finale, I think their reactions to LW were sorely needed. Also Jonny and Simone have both said they’ll be at every sibling’s wedding and stick around for years but they missed Francesca’s??? Also felt their absence too much then. They’re both booked and busy I think we’ll continue to only get a couple episodes a season from them

8: Francesca did get to thrive happy in pt 2 my baby I love her

9: I think they managed to disconnect the mondrich plot even further like 😭 once again, I don’t mind them their plot just feels very empty

10: Pen and Delacroix CONTINUE to be my fave duo I love them so freaking much and they can never get rid of it

13: Portia’s growth this season continued to be 10/10 I loved her and Penelope’s relationship it really showed what it’s like to be closely related to people you oppose and the process of needing to forgive and understand them for your own peace of mind

14: that was not how I was expecting Colin to find out about Whistledown

15: Marcus felt a little rushed in part two but I think I need to watch the whole season together to fully decide

17: this was indeed the longest 27 days of my life I got Covid day after it dropped lmfao

We finally got character development from Cressida and if they write her out I’ll be inconsolable (as will Jessica Madsen)

read more'ing this for the the sake of my mutuals who i know plan to watch the show but still haven't. rambly spoiler-y post about Kill la Kill incoming:

it's kind of genuinely crazy to me how ryuuko killlakill is just canonically a lesbian and despite this show being insanely popular and seeing it posted everywhere ten years back, i somehow just never heard about it in the ten year span it took me to watch it. like just from internet osmosis i knew about the gay shit with kaworu in evangelion, and diantha and akko shipping is basically all i've ever heard about from LWA, and i vaguely knew how gay promare was before i watched it (though i didn't know there was an outright kiss).

but like, ryuuko is just gay and i never once stumbled on any posts about it. when she's in mind control land she makes out with nui on screen and the immediate assessment from ragyou afterwards is "she's horny and saw girl lips and pounced".

the show's character designer is still drawing post-canon ship art of her with mako sharing a futon and swapping shirts.

her fucked up mind palace that's presented as the unhappy ideal of her evil fascist mom's desires is depicted as her getting married to a faceless man, and she's ripped out of it by mako (and my goat senketsu) breaking up the wedding at the altar.

she goes on a fucking date with mako at the end and there's a fucking kiss and mako specifically uses romantic terminology (to my understanding the loanword "deto" is used only for romantic intent) and imagery and ryuuko uses the promise of the date to keep herself hyped up in the final boss fight and the last spoken line in the broadcast airing of the show is about their date and like what the fuck?? i've looked up old discussion threads and i've seen people trying to argue about ryuuko/mako being canon and like, yeah, mako's date proposition is partially played for humor, but if ryuuko was a boy absolutely nobody would ever have a single doubt whether this shit is supposed to be romantic or not.

the ova ends with these bitches holding hands.

like i know how anime writing works and i'm not going to act like this is anywhere near the level of explicit depiction you'd get in like, an actual yuri manga or whatever—the kiss with nui is depicted as An Extremely Bad Thing done by a ryuuko who isn't in a right state of mind and the date with mako uses romantic terms but is coy about actually confirming anything—but like come on. mako is literally "me with the bad bitch i pulled by being autistic".

there's no ending to this post i just think ryuuko is cool. i already liked her a lot but the show ending with a big fat "SHE'S GAY" sticker slapped on top made me realize "oh i'm going to be annoying about this show for years."

I did think, let’s go about this slowly by @pelorsdyke is a short and insightful peek into Karen's mindset at the start of hers and Hen's relationship, as she overcomes her own fears of adhering to stereotype and committing too hard and too fast. But she finds a way to balance her heart's wants with her mind's eye, and find a intimacy she can build on along the way.

I didn't know (that it could be good) by @rainbow-nerdss 'Eddie lets himself into Buck's apartment unannounced, and finds him in a compromising position. That should be nothing, just something to laugh about down the line, except afterwards, it's like a switch has flipped, and neither of them can get it out of their minds. The solution? They need to get it out of their systems.' Best friends that secretly hook up and don't question it because it feels good and that's their favourite person and nothing has to change right? trope my beloved. God this fic is absolutely swoonworthy, and I'm still giving it hearteyes for days. Do yourself a favour and read it right now.

please, please, please by @bookinit02 'So, a widower walks into a bar, and he hasn’t been held by someone he loves in years.' A touch starved Eddie starving for Buck's touch in particular! In which Buck subconsciously stops casually touching Eddie after he comes out, and Eddie notices and is not happy about it. Circa S7/S8, they soon set out to resolve the issue. Such a great exploration of a complicated yearning, and then I particularly loved their flirtatious bickering in this fic because it was so very very them and endearing as hell.

kerosene by @roguebuck is almost the flipside...a post 7x06 fic starting from the wedding, in which Buck isn't sure why 'nothing's going to change' unsettles him so much and why he can't get Eddie out of his head...even at the most inopportune times. But sometimes all it takes to make a change is for someone to pour the gas and light a match...and this fic sure does that!

the city is a jungle and i’m a beast by @putanauhere just in time for canon!werewolf Eddie, this is such a brilliant fic that really immersed me in the story, and was so well thought out to make the werewolf lore fit into 911verse smoothly. Eddie and his platoon were bit by a werewolf during his time in the army, and so as long as he's been with the 118 he's been keeping a secret. When a call to a magick shop goes awry, Buck's infodumping on the habits of wolves meets Eddie's reluctance to concede to superstition...but he's mostly desperate to hide. When Buck follows him to his safe house, things soon go awry, and together they must learn to live with the consequences. Perfect spooky season fic, and really emotional as well.

Any Other Way by @cal-daisies-and-briars I have been meaning to read this for weeks and am so glad I finally have! This is a fic where Eddie and Buck's lives take on each other's paths - an unattached and openly gay Eddie going on an aimless teenage wanderlust after his high school girlfriend left suddenly, and Buck signing up to the army to spite his parents. Then one day Eddie runs into Shannon at the grocery store...with a young boy at her side. This is a really wonderful fic about a lifechanging secret and stepping up to parenthood, overcoming fears and letting your guard down. I loved how despite the narrative switcheroo, their motivations remain true to themselves and their family at the core.

the sound of the saw (must be known by the tree) by @absolutelybifurious a fic inspired by the last episode of Grey's Anatomy I ever watched lmao. Eddie blames himself for Chris leaving, but Buck is frustrated that the time has stretched out so long, and is encouraging him to go get him. But Eddie doesn't want to hear it and they part on rocky ground with Eddie boarding a plane to El Paso for some wildfire training. When Buck receives a voicemail, the world shifts from under his feet, and the 118 race to save Eddie. This was passionate and angsty and the love sings off the page.

806 felt so completely disjointed to me. all the bucktommy scenes we got leading up to that last one were happy; them on a date, Buck realising that 'oh maybe I do love him', Tommy looking so happy to see him at the beginning of that end scene, and then... flipping to that breakup, out of nowhere, with no context or reasoning or foreshadowing at all...

not to mention the RAMPANT biphobia throughout the episode (Maddie's commentary about Abby "turning men gay" and telling Josh that "buck slept with Tommy's fiance" (insinuating that Buck - the ONLY BISEXUAL ON THE SHOW - cheated/helped Abby cheat), Tommy's breakup speech including things like Buck not knowing what he wants (right after Buck made it very clear that he DOES actually know what he wants) because Tommy's his "first, not your last" and utterly dismissing what Buck had to say about that whole situation.

Yes it can be read as Tommy getting spooked by Buck going 0-100 on the moving in thing, IF Tommy hadn't already stayed after Buck went 0-100 "come with me to my sister's wedding" on their SECOND DATE. It can be read as Tommy having baggage and self-sabotaging before he can get hurt, IF there had been any threads of that being dropped throughout the episode prior to that moment.

in the end it really felt like "oh Tommy just remembered his boyfriend isn't Fully Gay, so there's a Chance that Buck will leave/cheat/break Tommy's heart to be with a woman again so we'll just cut this off now" and that... that is a slap in the face.

and now that Lou has not been asked to return for the rest of season 8, it looks like we're not going to get any kind of closure on this, and Oliver wants to go back to the good ol fuckboi Buck days (that NONE OF US have missed or want to see again) after spending MONTHS talking about how badly he wants Buck to settle down and find his person and be at ease with himself etc. after MONTHS of promising to do this storyline justice, it was an ACTIVE CHOICE to take this route and take it in the most biphobic, stereotypical, cruelest way possible.

I'm done with it. I'll take spoilers on the rest of the season to keep up with the ensemble but I find that I can't trust Tim Minear or Oliver Stark to do Buck justice anymore.

they should have picked some random new guy for this role if this was how they wanted to play the story out. not Tommy. not Lou. he didn't deserve any of this or any of the hate he got for just trying to put his heart into his work.

911 is no longer a comfort show. what was the goal here? to remind us that queer men don't get to be happy? what was the point? I'm heartbroken. I'm angry. I just. I'm tired.

I agree with all of this, also in a way I'm angry that as fans we went through so much shit fighting for this relationship and they couldn't even end it respectfully.

I'm just tired. And I don't know what to think. It was meant to be a rom com. This doesn't feel like that.

i feel like the writers for the first 90% of the movie were all taken to a back alley and shot in the leg by different writers who then finished the last 10% of the movie

Agatha All Along episode 7-9 speculation

Just ahead of episode 7 airing this week, I have some thoughts on where I think this series might be going but I'll put them under the cut as it might be considered spoilers if you haven't seen episode 6 yet. So...

Now that we've got Billy/William's backstory, I'm seeing a lot of fandom screams along the lines of 'Is Agatha going to die in her own show?? OMG that would be the ultimate lesbian character death trope, so bad, Jac Schaefer would NEVER!!". And I want to back up a few steps.

Yes, if you've seen the mid season trailer, we see Rio in her full grim reaper costume, so it's not looking likely that everybody makes it out of the show alive. And if you remember one of the first lines she ever said in episode one, she was there 'for a job' in the first place....

But they also both confirm that Rio and Agatha can't kill each other as it currently stands. Maybe the result of some centuries ago blood pact....? Or a wedding ritual? Who knows, and maybe they will explain it all and break that bond by the last episode, but in any case, I don't care if Agatha lives or dies as long as her (and Rio's) story is told well and concluded sensibly. These two clearly have a rich history that quite literally goes centuries back, and I'm really excited to see that story unfold and what it means for them now. And from what I've seen so far it makes me hopeful that we are going to see this story be told and potentially concluded in an epic way that does not erase the queer representation or play into tropes. They are canonically a lesbian couple, the first in the MCU, that is CONFIRMED. Unfortunately, for fans who are after sweet domestic lesbian love stories, this was never going to be the one, this is the MCU and these two characters are witches, one of which is quite literally Death... so I'm not expecting a happy ending (but for those that do, the AU fanfics do already exist 😉).

If Agatha dies in this show, the question will be, was her story told to make this a worthy conclusion? And I trust Jac Schaefer to make it so. The trope only applies if the lesbian character dies for no reason other than that they were gay and therefore the 'bad guy'. And the fact that Agatha Harkness is quite literally in love with Death carries a lot of potential to make her own death an epic love story. We will know it very soon, I for one, am sat for this gay explosion (quote from Aubrey Plaza) and if two hot witches making out means somebody dies...well, so be it. 😉

Venom 3 spoilers!!

(I know I know I’m making like 5th post already)

Interesting question people brought up is “Is Venom movies queerbait or queer subtext”.

Honey. I’m an old bisexual person from a very homophobic country. I’ll share a wisdom with you: it is always queerbait. No matter what happens on the screen, It queerbait until the moment straight people in the audience are feeling uncomfortable. Then it’s gay representation.

The only time it is “queer subtext” is if you live in a times when they put you in prison for being gay. Or if it’s modern days but you live in a country where they put you in prison for making positive gay representation in media. And as far as I know it is not illegal to be gay in USA.

So.

Venom movies. Is it queerbait or queer context? Queerbait. 100%

Good old monetised machine.

It is bad that corps use queerbait tactics? Yes.

Is it so bad you should boycott the movies and never ever interact with Venom media again? No.

After all we are just “small people”. We want to enjoy things. And symbrock is very enjoyable and nice. In comics and in movies. And times we spent creating fan content for each other is priceless. 🖤

But what is my complaint then? My complaint is that Venom 3 didn’t do enough. There was so much opportunity and possibilities. They didn’t even use 10% of those.

They did some good old queerbait but even compared to Venom 2 they did too little. Venom 2 was gayer. It was bolder. It was more.

They should’ve go all out in Venom 3 to top that but they didn’t.

I can live with corporations using queer audiences for monetary gain. But it is humiliating when they won’t even give us bare minimum in return.

No joke about wedding in Vegas. No head boop. Not even “love you man, bye”. Believe me, when it comes to queerbait you can put SO. MUCH. MORE. and get away with it. (Remember fucking Naruto or Evangelion for example)

It’s not even half-asses effort. It’s quarter-pubic hair effort. Barely any noticeable effort.

Oh and I also do not believe in “studio meddling probably played a role”. C’mon. “Studio meddling” didn’t remove kiss from the first movie. Didn’t remove “IM OUT OF THE EDDIE’S CLOSET” in second movie. But for some reason it removed something from third movie?? Yeah, I’m not buying it. I don’t believe that third movie had some martyr writer who tried their best but failed to make symbrock canon but failed.

To end it on positive note and not to be complete salty person: Venom dancing to ABBA was indeed very gay. And him wanting to see browday musical was also very gay.

I just wish we also had some symbrock moments too.

P.S. I wrote this before but I repeat myself this movie would’ve benefited greatly if Eddie and Venom had a very big and very bad fight about The Codex reveal at the beginning. Without it Eddie coldness feels incredibly OOC and uncalled for.

currently reading WataOshi vol. 3 bonus stories for the first time (SPOILERS AHEAD), and i gotta say:

somehow, this books take on queer representation is a perfect blend of "Everyone is Gay" escapist fantasy, and the depiction of how harsh and cruel reality can be for LGBT people

Yes, Claire and Rae get to have a wedding and their own kids, with fully supportive parents/in-laws. And Yes, everyone from thier friend group (except for like, two dudes) ends up being incredibly queer

But also...

the story does not pretend this world is all rainbows and sunshines for LGBT people, just becuase its a yuri romance. The world at large is still either ignorant, or openly hostile towards non-cishet people. The state and the church dont legally recognize Rae & Claire as married, even though everyone who knows them does.

Inori's depiction of LGBT issues manages to simultaneously be realistic, AND incredibly optimistic, and i absolutely love her for it

Onto season 2, welcome back to the trainwreck and the ramblings of a bookworm nerd. Spoilers for the whole show and the books.)

Season 2 episode 1 [What Can the Damned Really Say to the Damned] - part 1/4

- Before we even start the episode (oh boy this is going to get long), I have to share the passage from the book from which that quote comes because it's amazing:

"The Mediterranean was black, black off the coast of Italy, black off the coast of Greece, black always, black when in the small cold hours before dawn, as even Claudia slept, weary of her books and the meager fare that caution allowed her vampire hunger, I lowered a lantern down, down through the rising vapor until the fire blazed right over the lapping waters; and nothing came to light on that heaving surface but the light itself, the reflection of that beam traveling constant with me, a steady eye which seemed to fix on me from the depths and say, 'Louis, your quest is for darkness only. This sea is not your sea. The myths of men are not your myths. Men's treasures are not yours.'

But oh, how the quest for the Old World vampires filled me with bitterness in those moments, a bitterness I could all but taste, as if the very air had lost its freshness. - Ayyy, the first "disregard"! Danny boy really does not want to hear from Armand at the beginning.

- Can I just say, maaaan, dirty grimy Louis looks absolutely beautiful, no, I will not take any criticism.

- [Louis] "Can you imagine, never dreaming? Would you look forward to sleep? Or would it terrify you when the day broke?"

[Armand] "Or is it the sleep of an infant? Tabula rasa?"

Makes me think of something my Doctor, Eleventh, said once:

"Clara sometimes asks me if I dream. 'Of course I dream', I tell her. 'Everybody dreams.' 'But what do you dream about?' she'll ask. 'The same thing everybody dreams about', I tell her. 'I dream about where I'm going.' She always laughs at that. 'But you're not going anywhere, you're just wandering around.' That's not true. Not anymore. I have a new destination. My journey is the same as yours, the same as anyone's. It's taken me so many years, so many lifetimes, but at last, I know where I'm going, where I've always been going: home, the long way 'round." (Eleventh Doctor at the end of The Day of The Doctor)

I think this quote can perfectly be applied to Louis. I mentioned in my rewatch of the very first episode that by accepting Lestat's offer, Louis loses access to an important part of his identity: his life amongst the Creole community of NOLA, with the church and the weddings, the dances and the games, the traditions and rites. And Louis says himself, what he wants is a family of his own, a home. Everything Louis ever wanted is to find the place and the people he belongs to, his home. It turned out not to be the NOLA of his youth, where he couldn't have a proud out gay man. Season 2 shows that it's not Paris of the after war either, nor is it with Armand; Paris is too isolated and too strict, and life with Armand, well, too dishonest and cold. Is it to be with Lestat? Could be. Or, like Louis says and shows in ep8, he's companion enough for himself and he'll paint his life with his own colors from now on.

- Abso-fucking-lutely adore the change in behaviour of Armand now that he's not playing Rashid. The white shirt casually open, the lounging, seductive pose, the langourous manner of talking... It's another mask, he's playing another role to push Daniel's buttons, but it's closer to how you'd imagine a 500-year-old vampire who looks as gorgeous as he does would act. And honestly Assad Zaman is gorgeous and talented and even if I'm not an Armand fan I am still mesmerised and nodding approvingly.

- Oh, hey, didn't notice the first time around, but the subtitles when Claudia talks German (or I think it's Ukrainian?) respect the little errors of syntax and tenses she makes. That makes my little multilingual heart very happy.

- [Louis] "This war. It's affecting the blood. Been drinking misery, hopelessness. It's in the blood, we're taking it in. Taking it on. I'm thinking it's why we can't get warm, warm up."

Yeah... *looks at 2024* I know what you mean.

Louis imitating Claudia and having a conversation all with himself is equal part funny and sad. They both need a hug. And a shower.

- [Louis] "The vampire hadn't been here for centuries. The few scraps of forensic proof we found made the case plain, but Claudia was unassailable. Like... like some deranged geologist waving a woolly mammoth tusk saying, 'Let's knock on the neighbor's door, there must be one inside.'"

Fascinated with the way Louis's been narrating this part of the European journey so far. There's life in his voice, rhythm, animation, in a way that was seldom there before. As if he's fondly remembering that part of his life, when it was just him and Claudia and no obligations, no responsibility, just the chaotic, bloody wilderness of WW2-torn Europe, and despite the grief, the loneliness, the cold, he's enjoying himself, because it's some sort of elipsis between the pain he left behind in NOLA and the pain he's about to encounter in Paris. As if those few years running around Europe in rags, hunting down phantoms, was much more peaceful and fulfilling than 30 years of (admittedly, partly) abusive marriage to Lestat, and definitely more than the Paris time or the after-Paris. And the way the light orchestral music hasn't stopped since the beginning of the episode highlights that feeling of fond remembrance. Yes, Claudia was angry and mostly silent, yes, he was grieving Lestat and hallucinating him all the time, yes, Europe was deep in WW2 and all the horrors that entails, and still, Louis is feeling more himself than he did in his own hometown with his suits and his respectability and his complicated family. Maybe Lestat was right after all, maybe Louis hid behind his masks for so long while all along his true nature was the wilderness hidden by the veneer of sociability, the way New Orleans's buildings barely veil the swamps... Or maybe I'm reading way too much into it all.

- [Louis] "I want to thank you... for the memories you helped restore the other night. I understand these diaries much better now."

Are you sure. Are you really sure of that, Louis. Though, it does give more weight to what I was saying just above. Louis feels like he's unlocked a part of himself he had lost or forgotten thanks to Daniel's unrelenting questions, and it makes him much more invested in his own narration and much more lenient towards Claudia's narration.

- [Daniel] "And tonight's two hours and counting on chasing old world vamps who never materialize. You ever read Moby Dick, Real Rashid?"

[Real Rashid] "I'm here to serve"

[Daniel] "Ah. Yeah, sure. I'm sorry, this is... this is so weird. Where did they send you when Shah Rukh Khan over here was playing you? Is there a panic room behind the Rembrandt?"

[Louis] "My love ran a theatre company for 150 years, Daniel."

[Daniel] "Your love was in a box pondering a premeditated neck wound, according to Claudia. She wrote it, let's choose to believe it."

[Armand] "Unworthy in San Francisco, Unworthy in Dubai. Disregard."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA I AM DYING THIS EXCHANGE IS EVERYTHING

Haaa, let me catch my breath, I've been wheezing for the past 5 minutes relistening a couple of times to the whole thing to make sure I don't miss a part. Louis trying sooooo hard to sell his and Armand's relationship and Daniel immediately coming in with the steel chair and Claudia's diaries, and didn't I say "Let's believe it" would come back to bite him in the ass, I hadn't expected it so soon tho.

And then Armand being so vexed he lets loose his inner catty drama queen too, and yet I am sorry but have you seen how he looks at Daniel even when he's insulting him, Devil's Minion fans, how are we feeling, 'cause I'm having the time of my life.

And finally, to come back to that first line, Daniel alluding to Moby Dick as a parallel to Claudia's impossible hunt for the vamps... I love clever literary references.

another thrilling spirealm update

henlo my friends yes it's that time once again where i tell you what is happening on the bizarrely named drama "the spirealm," i am at episode 25 having shotgunned it all weekend and i have thoughts, opinions, and a gabillion screencaps of ruan nanzhu looking stricken, i finally had to stop taking them because he has the exact same face of devastated yearning in all of them and i was filling up my cloud drive. spoilers ahoy! [parts one and two are here if you even care]

as just mentioned, ruan nanzhu spends his time looking either 1) icily indifferent (when people who aren't qiushi are talking to him and/or dying in front of him, to his vast annoyance) or 2) torn asunder by pangs of desire (whenever he's staring at qiushi, who's babbling obliviously about science or clues or absolutely nothing of any importance whatsoever). here is a representative screencap but he has this look on his face pretty much continually, like he's just been hit by a car. a car of love.

it makes me put my head in my hands and scream quietly, i haven't seen a BL actor who understood the assignment this well since zhang xincheng or maybe even z1l. (who all clearly not only read the novel but underlined it, highlighted it, and stuck in colored post-it notes.) when not busy with adoration, he swans around being magnificent in a frockcoat like he's edward rochester, while lin qiushi trails behind him wearing a fit he got out of the goodwill box in his college dorm.

in spite of being besties with a literal fashion icon, at no point does it ever seem to occur to lingling "hm maybe i should dress a bit more formally for my imminent demise inside the doors"—no, instead he proudly wears his ratty sweatshirt with holes in it. which i sort of think might belong to huang junjie. idk maybe qiushi trusts it, and feels safe in it, hey look at that i made it sad.

massive power couple energy. also notice how their outfits are exact black-and-white negatives of each other, the harper's bazaar wedding photoshoot would have been so goddamn lit.

taking a brief moment for a shoutout to this guy. chen fei i don't even know what your fate will be but i already know you deserved better. not only do you patch everyone up with your veterinary knowledge, but i have seen your unrequited love. it did not go unobserved. you would have been a great partner, you're unimpressed by everything and drink your soy milk with chilling apathy. i'm real sorry the theatre gay didn't love you back. you're too similar i guess.

back to lin qiushi who has the worst case of main character energy since harry freaking potter. somehow the game is about him??? he has trauma??? none of this was in the novel and i'm just pretending it's not happening until it becomes impossible to ignore. in the meantime he continues to sympathize with door ghosts because he's just that nice of a guy. (EXCEPTION: nanzhu literally murdered two competitors bc they threatened his darling, and lin qiushi helped him cover it up. i was appalled for like 5 minutes then i shrugged. it's a cutthroat game, the doors change people. also it's like captain mal used to say: if someone tries to kill you, you kill 'em right back.) i have big Theories about what is fixing to happen but for now i will end by relating that lin qiushi has gone into a door alone, because he wants to butch up and be a better partner for ruan nanzhu. and that would be a great idea and super helpful except that nanzhu IMMEDIATELY WENT OUT OF HIS MIND WITH BLIND TERROR. outwardly of course he gives no signs of this (other than hiring someone to protect his fragile boyfriend, which, if lingling figures this out, ruan nanzhu will be sleeping on the sofa forever).

here he is pushing food around his plate miserably at lingling's funeral pre-solo-door party. everyone is having such a fun time.

and here he is standing in front of the door waiting like a dumb wounded animal. i have a feeling if lin qiushi doesn't emerge at 15 minutes on the dot, nanzhu will simply expire on the spot, like a wolf separated from its mate. maybe that's the end of the spirealm JUST KIDDING, we still haven't gotten to the part where they're on either side of a different door wailing at each other. i really need lin qiushi to stop being such a cheery equanimous little frat boy and START SUFFERING, can we get some mutual pining up in this bitch. (also i need his hair to change in the traditional BL post-wedding hairstyle alteration because i can't remember at this point if huang junjie even HAS a forehead under that vast curtain of bangs)

to sum up, we've had a) sexy handfeeding of lychees b) tender cat fur removal from face and c) stalking your pretty boyfriend aggressively against the wall so you can…offer him a packet of disinfectant. in the novel of course nanzhu bites him and yes xia zhiguang absolutely knows that's what he's supposed to be doing here, we love to see it.

oh and also d) "i'll protect you. i'll protect you forever."

-Married in Red/Dead Plate Major spoilers for several endings- Rody takes Bok-Su's place and Vince is Da-jeong- Vince is canon gay so he is marrying (ceremonially) a man- Quite Angst- TW in the Hashtags

MAIN POST OF THE AU

- “Rody, here you are…”

Vincent's voice brought Rody back to reality and, oddly enough, a feeling similar to excitement. Not excitement to see it, no, excitement for what was to come.

Rody turned and stared for a moment at his Ex-boss, his former friend, who was looking at him with a look of serious reprimand. If Rody were his self from about 5 years ago, he would probably be shaking and scared, but at this point...Rody could only smile, satisfied with being pushed to the limit like this. He had it right where he wanted it.

- “I need to talk to you” - Vincent grabbed his arm, urging him to come closer.

- “whatever you want Vincent—“- Rody returned to his introductory self, trying to appear as non-threatening and friendly as possible until he was cut off.

- “in private.”- Vincent tightened his grip on his forearm, either trying to prevent him from walking away or trying to intimidate him, it didn't work in any case.

- “It seems like a luxury with so many guests. There are too many people to do something here…” - Rody didn't know if he said that last thing for Vincent or for himself. Be patient Rody, almost, almost...

-“Chris's room should be enough.”-

- “the groom's room? What would Chris think if he heard you now?” – Rody watched with amusement as Vincent's face contorted into even more visible anger, but surprisingly he didn't say anything. he only half drag him to the room.

Rody entered the room followed closely by Vincent. He tried to stay as close to the closet as possible not only to ensure the success of his plan, but also to keep Vincent away from him and not notice the metallic smell he emitted from there (which they both already knew VERY well).

- “cut the shit, tell me why you're really here.” – Vincent looked at him irritated and visibly dismayed at the lack of information, he KNEW that if Rody was here it was for a bad reason, but he needed to hear it from him, to know what was.

- “I already told you Vincent, I came to congratulate a friend who helped me in a difficult moment on his wedding day” - Rody repeated the words he said to him at the reception, but it was different, robotic, rehearsed. As if he already saw what would happen coming.

- “Rody, I'm not an idiot, I know that's not why you're here, if you try anything right now I swear I'm going to—” Vincent went from being simply annoyed to being angry at the idea of that day being ruined (and therefore Rody no less) but he couldn't even finish his sentence.

- “or are you going to do what, Vincent? What are you going to do? Is there even anything you haven't done?”- Rody stared at him, seeing how the little color in Vincent's face disappeared at the indirect accusation.

-“Was it worth it? Did you test your hypothesis? How can you live with yourself, be happy, while someone Like HER just managed to rot in your Freezer?”-

Rody didn't raise his voice once, but he had to restrain himself from going up to Vincent and simply breaking his neck, stabbing him with the pie knife, strangling him—he held back waiting for an answer, something that would at least show him that Vincent had, even if it is, SOME regret for what he did, grief, dissatisfaction, guilt. Everything Rody was feeling all these years was because of him-

But he got nothing, not even a measly apology. Vincent just looked at him like a deer looks at the headlights of a car, he didn't move or speak. Rody knew it at that moment. He didn't feel it, or if he did, it would never be enough.

- “Rody…go away. Just Go—I've tried to be friendly because this is a happy day for me, but I just can't be calm with you around. I'll tell Chris and we'll both escort you OUT.” Vincent spoke firmly, like when he was in the kitchen, but he was clearly short of breath, and his pulse was trembling. Oh, how the tables have turned.

- “Speaking of Chris, do you think I can at least give you my wedding gift?”-

- “I Beg Your pardon?”- Vincent seemed more offended than surprised.

- “You said you would go for Chris, right? Well, put your hand in my pocket” - Rody extended the side of the pants that had the “wedding gift” a little, to make the message more explicit. He planted his feet firmly on the floor and looked Vincent in the eyes with a look that he couldn't tell, whether it was excitement or impatience. He wouldn't leave until he had seen Vincent open his gift.

Vincent simply grunted and sighed in resignation, approaching Rody and putting a hand in his pocket without giving it much thought -

–“This is ridiculous. What does what's in your pocket have to do with Chr—”- Vincent cut himself short as he felt something familiar and unusual in the texture, it was familiar. He wrapped his hand completely around it and knew right away, it was a cake knife. But that wasn't what made him freeze in place immediately and break out in a sweat as he thought about the possibilities. No.

It was the fact that the knife was wet, with a coagulating substance, something he had already felt.

Vincent took the cake knife completely out of Rody's pocket and saw his fear come true, the knife was almost completely covered in a bright red, with coagulated parts and even what Vincent could only guess were pieces of skin stuck to the edge. .

-“RODY…YOU DIDN'T DARE..”- this wasn't happening, it couldn't be happening. Rody couldn't have done what he thinks he has done...

-“Oh, not me, Vincent…You did it.”- Rody concluded with a smile.

-“EXCUSE ME—“- -“That was your weapon”- Rody spoke again, cutting him off again.

Vincent went from being incredulous to being angry at Rody's accusations, not only because he knew it was a lie, but because of the nonsense it was.

- “IT'S OUR WEDDING DAY! ALL THIS WAS BECAUSE HE WANTED IT! WHY WOULD I HURT HIM?!”- The thought that Chris could be out there severely injured or, worse and more likely, dead, not only made Vincent raise his voice in anguish, but it even made his eyes water.

-“What do I know? I'm just a witness. MAYBE you heard him say how he was thinking of leaving you. Maybe he loved someone more than you, maybe you went back to your old habits, and your huge ego couldn't handle the rejection…you had to get rid of the problem” - Rody used everything he acquired at the party, using it as ammunition not only to substantiate himself, but to see Vincent even more hurt. He knows it's not true, and it will still take him down...

-“THAT IS RIDICULOUS! I WOULD NOT KILL SOMEONE FOR SUCH A DUMB REASON!”- Vincent said frantically, both pain and anger mixing as he spoke.

-“BUT YOU DID IT VINCENT. YOU DID IT…” -

Rody looked at Vincent with an anger he had never seen in him, almost feeling an oppressive force in his chest, as if someone was squeezing his heart from the inside, but he was quickly overcome by pain.

-“I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!”-

Everything happened so quickly, Rody had to admit, if he hadn't moved in time and removed the pearl necklace, he would probably have been impaled. But at that moment the only thing he could think about after falling against a shelf was how he saw, now too slowly, how the body of Chris, the groom, collapsed from its hiding place and fell right into Vincent's lap. Stopping it in its tracks.

Vincent looked down tensely, feeling how the remaining blood began to seep and stain his clothes, with the cold body of the love of his life looking up, empty, lifeless.

The realization took a few seconds to come, and when it did, it came in the form of a powerful scream of misery, denial, and grief.

Vincent didn't even realize how bad the situation looked, very busy unable to take his eyes off his dead boyfriend, until the aforementioned's mother arrived, having been alerted by the screams.

“—what's happening—oh my god—OH MY GOD!! MY SON!—“- Chris's mother's voice was unmistakable. When Vincent tried to say something, anything, he was interrupted by a familiar scream.

-“GET AWAY, MA´AM! THAT MAN IS A PSYCHOPATH! I SAW HIM STAB CHRIS AND TRY TO HIDE THE BODY! HE TRIED TO KILL ME! GO AND GET HELP!” - Rody shouted in an “altered” manner while taking off his sack that was now stained with blood. Vincent processed his words and tried to refute as best he could.

-“DON'T LISTEN TO HIM, HE WAS THE ONE WHO—“- -“GET AWAY FROM MY SON!”- before he could even speak in his defense, Vincent was pushed away from his boyfriend's body, being held by his crying mother.

Looking up, Vincent saw how people came up and looked at him in horror, obviously buying Rody's story. How could they not? He had a Weapon and his boyfriend's blood everywhere. What should he do? what? what!?

The only thing Vincent could do at that moment was stand up (falling due to blood in the process) and run, run outside, away from prying eyes, away from his dead boyfriend and future, away from RODY.

Rody took his time getting up and adjusting his clothes, taking a moment to look at the mother of the son he murdered, feeling that unpleasant bubbling sensation in his head. He couldn't afford that now, it's too late. It's time to finish it.

The bloody footprints went from the groom's room to where the ceremony was going to take place, although of course, it was obvious that Vincent slipped a couple of times on the liquid (either because of the rush to get away or because of his anxiety made him clumsier), you could see prints of his hands on the floor trying to support himself, on top of a table, and the most cruelly ironic, on the sign with Chris's name, where he would sit with Vincent at the end of the ceremony.

Vincent was cornered, he had nowhere to go but outside. Everywhere he went inside people pushed him to prevent him from “escaping” or heard even more crying about how he could have done something like that, to Chris of all people. Vincent couldn't even tell who was yelling to call the police, people whispering about how Chris was planning to leave him and he must have "lost his cool," among other things.

When Vincent finally arrived outside the place, as people ran inside, he could only look ahead, unable to breathe properly, tired, shaking (from anger at the situation? from hatred towards Rody? from pain at this new feeling of loss?). Vincent walked slowly trying to catch his breath, opened his white jacket a little (now stained red) and stopped for a second on a small detail.

In the pocket of his jacket, a daisy that Chris had left him as an ornament, due to all the commotion, had shattered into pieces, without a single petal remaining.

Vincent didn't even want to look up, facing the makeshift altar Chris's family had made, with hyacyntus, he couldn't. He wouldn't want to face the reality of his current situation, yes, but worse, he wouldn't want to face the “maybes”, the “what ifs”.

He just stood there, squeezing his arms tightly around his body, his hand closed over the last detail of a destroyed life, and he muttered the same thing over and over and over again.

- “I…didn't do this…it was him”-

As people walked away from Vincent erratically, Rody took slow steps towards where he saw him run, feeling a great level of satisfaction in the progress. Was this what fulfillment felt like? the relief? Seeing this person who used to terrorize Rody years ago, who had been robbed of the love of his life and his will to live, now reduced to a tearful mess was more than gratifying, it was cathartic. He needed this, Manon needed this.

-“Vince…” - Rody's voice was the softest it had been all afternoon, but more importantly, he never thought he would use that nickname again, although now it felt more like a final blow, a last sign of familiarity. to whom now, was only a stranger.

- “Are you full?”

The last thing Vincent would see, before hearing the sirens approaching, would be a smiling, crooked, satisfied Rody, unaware, when that obnoxious happy grin slipped away for a second.

Daisis: they can mean new starts in life and are normally related to cheerfullness, purity and joy.

Hyacinths: meanwhile they Hyacinths are related to the love and pride (due to Apollo's and Hyacinthus story) the hyacinths can be tied to jealousy, they can also be a sign that you recognize you've made a mistake and you're looking for forgiveness.

- alien hand syndrome scene made the whole episode worth it with pure slapstick

- Buck, baby, no. Say less. Brutal learning curve, but you’re reaction made me cringe so hard I thought I’d never be able to look at you again

- Tommy, I get it, but ouch. Ordering a car just for you? “I think you’re adorable”, redeemed it though

- Hen and Karen deserve better than to be heartbreakingly messed around by social services (or whatever the US one is called)

- Eddie… What the fuck, dude? There’s so much more going on with you than Catholic guilt. Bobby defo has your number, and that man will continue to subtly call you out until you stop doing dumb shit you obviously hate

- Buck not using pronouns until he slipped up - oh! Love it. Big sis Maddie addressing it then being all “tell me about hot pilot”. Sweet and reassuring- we never doubted you

- I knew in my heart of hearts that Hen and Karen wouldn’t give up on that girl. I wondered for a second but with bestie Athena backup, I knew they’d make the effort.

- Big brother Denny! You’re such a sweetheart! You’re a tween, kicking off about getting hurt would be so easy but you’re so understanding. Proof of how amazing Hen and Karen are as parents

- Hen and Karen just getting all my love. I adore them, let them help Mara and all be a happy family!

- Also, Hen’s glasses variety this season? So fucking cool

- Buck coming out to Eddie. Subtle, understated, but good. Immediately Eddie was supportive and Buck was honest about stuff that was obviously worrying him and he need a friend for. Who better than someone who also knows Tommy? Even if “Tommy’s gay?!” realisation seemed to short circuit Eddie for a moment

- Parallels with the BuckTommy kiss! No sign of Buddie IMO but a set up for it, I do think

- Buck and Tommy having coffee. It was healing for ME after how bad that date was. Buck being SO honest again - he’s not hiding, he’s all in and proving it

- Tommy, I didn’t want to like you but you’ve wriggled your way into my heart. You’re perfect and sweet and damn flirty at exactly the right moments. Make that man blush

- Buck. Sweetie. Inviting him to your sister’s wedding? Intense and I can’t help but feel like a potential disaster. But end of episode looks like you’ll be screwing up in so many other ways, you probably won’t have time to mess things up with Tommy, silver linings I guess

All in all, a more laid back episode than I thought it would be and definitely more cringy and silly than I expected, but on reflection so much character development. There was a lot of discovery and it was all met with love. “You don’t know me” as a title made me worry, but it made me happy everyone was met with love ❤️
