#spoiler warning for Nezha

I have so many thoughts rn about Ao Bing and Nezha. Specifically, the fact that, by virtue of choosing to love and care for the other, Nezha and Ao Bing have already saved each other from their own worst fates.
Specifically in context of the 1979 version of them, which gave me brain worms from this tweet. First of all, absolutely KILLER fanart. I'm aware people have likely already made these connections and they aren't new, but I just have to ramble.
Trigger warning: mentions of suicide (1979 Nezha) + gore (1979 Ao Bing):
I know Nezha 2019/2025 had already started off with different premises, specifically being that neither Ao Guang nor Li Jing are pieces of shit. So, we don't really have the plot of Nezha being forced to commit suicide, nor of Ao Bing not giving a shit about human life and having his tendons pulled out as retribution by Nezha. But, we do know the general lines of how Nezha's story usually plays out. Nezha dies and is reborn as a lotus. Ao Bing dies, as punishment for the atrocities he's committed. That doesn't really change all that much, from how I understand it. And it didn't necessarily change in Nezha 2019 either. Nezha and Ao Bing both still die.
The difference is that they saved each other from it being tragic.
Ao Bing does try to do something awful. His motivation for attempting to bury Chentang pass was somewhat understandable, because he was given an impossible choice between the village or the destruction of his species. But he still does it. And Nezha stops him. But even though Ao Bing tried to kill everyone, Nezha chose not to strike the final blow because he cares about Ao Bing. Keep in mind, at this point while they do know they are each half of the chaos pearl, they didn't have their memories until the lightning strike, so they hadn't known each other that long. But Ao Bing was still the first person outside of Nezha's family (or in the case of taiyi, someone assigned to him by heaven), to actually offer him friendship and understanding and comfort. Ao Bing gave him hope. Their fates as adversaries changed in the moment Nezha chose not to go through with the strike, which is why I adore the shot of Nezha stopping his attack to point his spear at Ao Bing's dragon form. It's like a message is being sent - this is where it could've ended. This is where they could've fallen back into the lines fate had carved for them to follow. But they didn't. It makes Nezha yelling about fighting fate until the end in their ensuing conversation even more significant.
And because Nezha chose not to hurt Ao Bing when he could've, when he would've arguably had a right to, Ao Bing chose him right back. He put himself in the line of fire to save Nezha from the heavenly retribution, because Nezha in turn, gave him hope too. A human that never showed him any sort of prejudice for being a dragon, that cared about him enough to spare his life, that showed him exactly how it's possible to defy fate, both in regaining control of his demonic powers and, unknown to Ao Bing, saving Ao Bing in this iteration of their story. And in doing so, Ao Bing also saves Nezha from a tragic fate of dying alone as a sacrifice for the good of others. As Shen Gongbao pointed out very clearly, Ao Bing's mission could've been accomplished if he had simply let Nezha die. Nezha's been told for the entirety of the movie by everyone outside of his family that the world would be better off with him dead. But instead Ao Bing had decided in that moment that Nezha was worth more to him than what the world had assigned him as - a necessary loss for the good of everyone else.
And then both Ao Bing and Nezha were reborn as lotuses in the second movie by Taiyi. Together.
They changed fate, merely by choosing to love each other. They're each other's salvation. I am actually losing my mind.

What would be the swk's reaction to the jade emperor gone and heaven needs a new emperor?
Maybe erlang as the new emperor?
Oof I hesistate to answer this cus thats a big S4 spoiler, and the way it goes in my TMKATI au is also one. I'll just go with them reacting to the knowledge of JE being gone + Erlang is in temp control.
HeroIsBack: *chuckles* "Great joke... wait you're serious? I mean... you could do worse than Erlang I guess. He was strong enough to beat me. None of my business tho."
NewGods: "Ooooof. Sucks to suck I guess. Tf why that scrawny jerk in charge though? He trapped his sister under a mountain- then again that seems to run in the family so maybe thats why he was next in line."
Meihouwang: "Oh no! I don't know much about the celestial realm, but I bet everyone was sad that he passed away! I wish Erlang is a good king though!"
2000sCartoon: "Oh dear this is very very bad. Even if I didn't much care for the Emperor, I know that it's a bad idea to overthrow somebody that important. Power vaccuum and all."
Smash: "F in chat." *has stopped caring about the Celestial Realm long ago since he discovered The Library World*
Netflix: "WOOHO- oh my apolgises. I'm so sorry for your loss. By the way whos Erlang Shen???"
Reborn: "May the buddha guide him." *leaves room and starts partying hard*

nezha 2 spoilers (like actual spoilers, please be warned). i got to watch it at last!! freed from blocked spoiler purgatory!
hnggghhhhh shen gongbao & shen zhengdao & shen xiaobao vs ao guang & ao bing vs nezha & li jing (and jinzha/muzha ig) fathers and brothers and sons (normal about this)
the hugs betwen ao guang and ao bing really fuckin got me :(
I LOVE the design of lutong/the deer boy. his bow is actually so sick, I didn't realize this while watching but if the design is supposed to look like deer antlers they 100% succeeded and it looks cool as hell (also the captions translated him as deero. can someone please enlighten me as to why because ??? is that even a word??)
pretty solid plot. it kinda felt like the villain wuliang xianweng was just a villain that exists to be evil but i will forgive that for everything else
I understand the context for the cursed nezha ao bing merged face now and ngl it's grown on me
also when they were molding nezha's new body and his mom and dad were making requests and giving nezha a new design every 5 seconds, it felt like it was a nod to all the other nezha portrayals across the years hehe. was very cute
JINZHA AND MUZHA IN THE EXTRA SCENE. they are so making a 3rd installment with investiture of the gods as the main plot lol, it would be interesting to see their take since the jiang ziya movie touched on that as well
they're really really pushing the red and blue pairing with this one. it's neat! sharing a body has a lot of ship potential lol. but aside from romance the part where ao bing met nezha's bros and the scene with him and nezha after that was so :((((((((((( fuckin narrative parallels or whatever (pretending i dont care)
solid movie, gorgeous designs (yuxu palace was so beautiful), really cool fight scenes, etc. thank u for letting me see nezha and ao bing again

The cancelled Au’s??
Strange title I Know, but it’s the best way to describe this section
-The Day the World Eclipsed (the Original Plot)
-most may know this, but I changed the plot of the Story within the first few chapters. When Wukong left to head to the City, intent on finding a new home for his son… he was originally intended to go through with that.
I have Many MANY chapters of this unfolding- of Wukong actually going through with abandoning MK.
It was farrrr different than what the story has changed to now. And I love the direction the story is now going, but I had a lot of angst planned for the original :)
One day I might even post what originally was intended to happen.

time will go by (ao bing x reader)
inspired by this tiktok / crossposted on ao3
content warnings: female reader, switches between third pov (ao bing's) and second pov (yours), time travel events, mild angst/hurt and comfort, implied oubing (ao bing implied to have feelings for nezha), memory loss, reader's personality is similar to nezha, mild spoilers for nezha 2, mild suggestive content
author's notes: nezha and bingbing coping without the other by finding a partner who is an exact copy (personality wise)
Ao Bing remembers someone.
It's hard to put an exact face to him, and if you asked him for a name, he can't answer. It's difficult, trying to remember, but he knows that he's real. The person from a distant memory. The warmth that starts in his chest and spreads at the distant laugh, a distant smile.
He tells his daughter stories, of him. The stranger from his memories. The boy he swears he once knew, someone he swears once existed.
“We used to play jianzi,” he would say, a distant look in his eyes. “And he used to bite me. A lot.”
“Papa,” his sweet girl would say. “I bite you all the time too!”
And he would smile, gentle and affectionate, and pinch her chin affectionately.
“You do,” he would say. “You would've liked him.”
“If he existed,” she would correct, and Ao Bing would, yet again, sigh.
“If he existed,” he agrees.
***
His first memory of this world is your face.
He remembers waking up. The blinding sunlight makes his eyes hurt―he flinches, a sleeve covering his hand as he lays on the cold dirt. The scent of wet grass hits him. He realizes with vague clarity that it's been raining, the dirt moist against his fingertips, and a faint drizzle that cools his warm cheeks and sticks his robes onto his body.
It'll be a pain to clean from his hair, he realizes as he forces himself up. And oh, look. His new robes are dirty, the white fabric soiled with the grass stains and….
He squints.
Is that blood? He asks himself, holding his sleeve to what little light is visible from the sun, hidden behind angry, grey clouds. Why would there be blood on my―
“Hey.”
The faint drizzle ceases. Ao Bing lowers his arm, following the shadow that suddenly crosses him.
It's a parasol, faint pink and covered in strange patterns he's not sure he can decipher. Someone is holding it (obviously), and he follows the wrist connected to an arm, and that arm to a shoulder, higher and higher, until his gaze meets yours.
The other thing, Ao Bing was amused to admit, is that your smile felt familiar. As if he should have known, should have been able to put a finger to the way your lips curved and a dimple appears on one cheek, the gleam in your eyes that feels familiar.
Where have I seen you before?
“You lost, big guy?” Your voice cuts through the confusion that clouds his mind. “Listen, guy. I know I'm amazingly beautiful, but you barely know my name. Though if you ask….”
You trail off, or maybe Ao Bing loses focus. It's hard to pinpoint when there's a sudden pain in his head, a sharp, stabbing sensation that makes him flinch, two cold fingers pressed into his temple. He's acutely aware of the fact his fingers are digging into the soil (gross), and his body aches with a phantom pain he can't quite put a finger on.
Something wet seeps through his robes. It takes a second to realize it's blood (oh dear), and it's so red, and so much. Is he meant to be bleeding that much? It's a lot….
“Are you bleeding?” Ao Bing doesn't point out that your question is not helping. “Jesus― fuck. Um. Don't die―”
Yes, because I can control that apparently.
“I heard that.” Oh. “Come on, big guy. Gotta get you back….”
Someone, he assumes it's you, is wrapping their arms around him, and he's pulled to his feet. His head spins, or maybe the world spins, and he just can not keep track of heads or trails of his situation.
The last thing he hears, briefly, is a flurry of curses that escapes your mouth. He doesn't find the time to tell you cursing is improper, especially for a young lady.
When he wakes up again, he's lying on a cozy bed. There's no gentle pitter-patter of raindrops falling against his skin, unfortunately, but there is the gentle warmth of a fire that relaxes the ache in his joints for a moment or two, and a soft bed, he prefers, over the feeling of solid ground against his back.
He still flinches, though, at the blinding light that is again, the first thing he sees. It takes a moment to adjust, his eyes watering from the faint smoke that curls in spirals around the room. As he sits, he notices the red checkered blanket that falls onto his lap, and a fireplace where he finds himself lying.
It's…quite homely, he realizes. Not familiar, but also reminiscent of a memory he can't place.
As he stares and ogles (shameless, he knows), he fails to notice when the door to the room opens, and the click-clacking of heels echoes through the room. It's not until your hand, so warm, is pressed against his forehead, and your frowning face appears in his sights, that he snaps his gaze away from the seashells he recognizes on top of your fireplace to you.
“You're alive,” you grumbled, shoving him back against the futon. He complies, surprisingly, becoming obediently still as you tuck him back under the covers.
Of course, he only chooses to obey because of the faint pain wracking through his body. Oh, right. I'm injured.
“You saved me,” he says. Not a question, and not much of a remark, but more of a factual statement. Who else had saved him if not you, the stranger with an attitude that feels familiar? “Thank you.”
“Mnh.” His eyes are glued to your back as you stand. First, to the fireplace, adding another log and poking at the ashes. Then, to the opposite side, where a table is, he finally notices. You hold what seem to be a glass bottle biege in color, and a metal spoon.
Ao Bing internally grimaces.
“Well. Last thing I need right now is for someone to think I committed a murder.” You sit on the edge of the futon, bottle and spoon tucked away while helping him into a more comfortable position. Additional pillows are propped behind his back, of which he finds comfortable enough to try and relax against. “Open up, pretty boy.”
He stares at the spoon, filled with a strange liquid that resembles mucus.
“I must decline,” he says politely.
You raise a brow, that familiar glint in your eyes. “Oh, but I must insist,” you say, your tone riddled with amusement that feels like mockery. “For if you don't take this medicine, you'll probably die.”
He thinks through his options, then nods. “I will die with dignity, then.”
Your eye twitches at his tone. Ao Bing hopes it is from irritation―he doesn't know why, but he thinks your reaction would be much more funnier, somehow.
And of course, you don't seem to care. You're grabbing the front of his lapels, shoving that metal spoon with mucus liquid down his throat, and ugh, it tastes just as he expects it would. Disgusting.
How he manages to keep a straight face is nothing short of a mystery.
He turns to glare at you in an attempt to express his displeasure, naturally, but you're smiling, looking as pleased as a plum, and how can he bring himself to glare when it feels so familiar?
“So, pretty boy,” you say while standing to cover that started mucus medicine. “Do you have a name?”
What a silly question. “Ao Bing.”
You snort at him. Or, more specifically, at his sarcastic tone. “Alright, relax tough guy. No need to be hostile.” You spare him a glance. “I'm (Name).”
He repeats your name, once. It rolls of his tongue pleasantly, and he almost wants to repeat it. Perhaps if he says it enough time, he would be able to remember that thing at the back of his mind, a soft droning voice that he knows he should remember properly, that he knows he ought to listen too.
But thinking too hard makes his head ache. He stops, rubbing his temples as you re-approach him, this time with a silver tray. Hopefully, it's not anything that tastes or resembles mucus.
(It isn't, thank the heavens.)
“Ao Bing,” you repeat, setting the tray on his lap. “So, pretty boy―” Again with the nickname. “Why the hell were you lying on the ground? Especially in this weather?”
Ao Bing shrugs.
“Alright.” You nudge his cheek with another spoon. It's soup (thank the heavens, again), so he has no problem opening his mouth this time to take a mouthful. It tastes better too. And he finds himself staring at the spoon and your hand. “Then do you know why you were injured?”
This time, he glances at himself, noticing the white linen cloth wrapped around his mid-section, and a loose white robe covering his body. He picks at the cloth out of habit, frowning.
He was in a fight. He knows he was in a fight, because how else could he have gotten this injured?
….
But he can't remember why. It was important, that he knew. He was fighting for someone dear to him, wasn't he? To protect someone else? For…for his…family? Friends?
Ao Bing shakes his head in silent response to you. “I don't remember.”
He sees you frown, your brows furrowing, and your lips parted. You must've wanted to say something, but just like that, you falter and shake your head.
“Finish your food,” you say, holding another mouthful of soup to his lips. “Then rest.”
***
You had no idea what you were doing.
No, really. The one time you chose to leave your cabin for some groceries, you just had to run into some gorgeous stranger lying on the ground like he was some love interest from those weird shoujo manga you used to read. And of course, because your luck was utter shit, the guy was also injured.
Fuck, fuck fuckity fuck fuck. You run your hands through your hair, pacing the room back and forth, over and over.
The guy, er, Ao Bing, was fine. Ish. When you half-dragged, half-carried him back to your little cottage on the seaside, and stripped him from his heavy ass robes, you discovered the source of the bloodstains. The wounds though, weren't severe enough that you'd need to waste your time calling an ambulance, so you used what medical knowledge you knew from your dear old dad, wrapped him up and then prayed that he wouldn't die in your hands.
And he didn't, hallejuah. The gods listened to your prayers for once.
“I don't remember.”
To a degree, anyway. Because now, instead of getting rid of him once he felt better, you had to keep him around. If you didn't, you'd feel awful knowing you kicked some guy with no memory and possibly no family out on the streets.
“Maybe he's from a rich family?” Your dad comments from his end on your call, his voice light and warm. You can see him in the middle of cooking, stirring a pot of some awful concunction he came up with. “Have you looked for any missing person posters?”
You shake your head. Though you swear you didn't mean to stare, closer inspection of your “pretty boy” had you admiring how soft and delicate his skin is compared yours. He clearly had never worked a day in his life.
Also, the hair….you'd be better off believing the ghost in your wardrobe exists than that light blue color being that guy's natural hair.
“Checked. No one's missing their delicate little flower,” you comment, leaning against the armchair with a groan. “Ugh. Now what do I do? He's got no memory of anything.”
“Then why don't you just keep him?” Your dad, bless his soul, ignores your glare. He's probably too preoccupied with also ignoring the fire that blazes on the stove behind him. In about a few seconds, you know that your brothers will come rushing in, and another meal will end in disaster because your dad persists on trying to burn the house down.
And he still has the audacity to wonder why you're an arsonist.
“You can use the company,” he continues on. “And he seems like a decent fellow. He's nice―”
“We've barely spoken much.”
“―he's pretty―”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“―and I'm sure he'll appreciate you helping him.” He gives you a look. “Your kindness won't go to waste. And even if it does, it's better to waste your kindness than to show none at all, right?”
You shrug. “We'll see then. Good night, Dad. And your pot’s on fire.”
“Oh.”
***
Ao Bing recovers exceptionally fast. It takes at least a week, and by then, he’s restless. You can't count the number of times you've had to run after him trying to escape through your backdoor, itching to explore.
It worsens when he discovers you live near a sea. You have to promise him you'll take him yourself once you're certain he no longer needs to wear bandages.
It's like watching a child. Ao Bing runs through the sand, looking ridiculous in the clothing you lent him, and he tries to walk too far into the sea. You have to pull him back by the collar, pleading with him not to kill himself and worsen your reputation with the police.
“I like the sea,” he says to you, staring out the window that overlooks the beach. “It feels familiar to me. Like it's where I belong.”
You munch on a sandwich. “Did you grow up near it, then?”
He shakes his head, a finger tracing the rim of his porcelain teacup. There's a distant look to his eyes as he stares at the waves crashing on the sandy seashore, the scent of sea-salt that had grown on you, and the familiarity of the murky clouds always lurking in the distance.
He still doesn't remember.
He's trying, believe him, he's trying. There's a gnawing ache in his heart, a yearning for someone. Something.
Sometimes, he'll dream of faces ― a rough voice that stutters, a scary face that gentles when they see him. An angry, chubby face screaming his name.
“Maybe because you're my only friend?”
He glances at you, still chewing on something, sandwiches finished. If he looks hard enough, he'd notice it's a piece of fruit, a strawberry maybe, and you're snarfing them down like you haven't had a meal in forever, juices dripping down your chin and dribbling on your fingers.
It's cute, and he smiles slightly when you choke and stop to take a breather. You're cute, and Ao Bing has to look away as he recalls what little you had told him in the past week, a sorry attempt at keeping him from roaming off.
“I was too violent as a kid. People didn't like me much. But it's fine. I didn't need friends anyway.”
It's not fine to Ao Bing. Even one friend should be enough ― and he knows what he's saying! He has a friend too!
…
Well. Had a friend. He can't remember his face, but he remembers his voice, giggling and filled with mischief. He remembers that they used to play jianzi together, and there's still a faint scar from when he bit him on their first meeting.
Why had they met again? Oh, bother. He can't remember either.
“You're my friend,” he says to you, out loud, and he smiles faintly when you look at him, messy face and all. “Just so you know.”
“Oh.” You blink. Your eyes dart back and forth, at his face and gentle smile, and at your strawberry covered hands. “Um. Thank you?”
He chuckles and takes a sip of his tea, pretending not to notice your huffing at his amusement, especially at your expense.
However, a minute later, you clear your throat and respond ever so softly,
“You're…my only friend. Too…”
***
“You're my friend. Just so you know that.”
Um. What the flying flipping fuck!?
When had you ever heard those words? And, most importantly, why the fuck did they have such an affect on you!?
You didn't know what to think! Since he spoke those words, Ao Bing's been so, so weird. He's been smiling more, all pretty and delicate, and his cheeks are always so fucking red when he looks at you, and, and…
And what the fuck!?
You wanted to dig a hole and bury yourself in it. Maybe throw yourself into the sea and drown too. That would help the fire (not literally) burning through your fucking veins!!!
It's so stupid. This feeling in your chest is stupid.
He's just being nice, that's all. He's indebted to you, as one normally would in his situation. He's grateful you saved his life and gave him a home, so why else would he think to consider you his ‘friend’? He's only being polite.
So it doesn't matter if you genuinely feel the same, and you like that he's here, and you like that the loneliness that haunts you is no longer present because he's here, with you. He makes you feel less lonely, and you like that feeling….
But he's only being polite. You stare up at the ceiling, pretending the occasional firefly is a spark of flame. He's being nice because he has nowhere else to go. He doesn't actually mean it.
You sigh and turn on your side. It's pointless worrying, and it's even more pointless complaining. What's done is done anyway ― you can't hate Ao Bing for lying in an attempt to stay. The most important thing is that he's safe.
And lying in bed with you, his skin cold and soothing compared to yours. You almost want to snuggle into his chest, and you do, and his arms are wrapped around you.
So cold….wait …
Your eyes snap open, and in your hastiness to move, the back of your head knocks him on the chin. He yelps, and you yelp, and then you're pushing off the bed, falling flat on your back on the unwelcoming wooden floor.
The bedside lamp is flicked on. Ao Bing peers down at you ― there's bruising already on his delicate skin, and wisps of pale blue hair are falling from the ponytail you've tied for him. It frames his face perfectly, given him a welcoming appearance that makes your heart race.
“Are you alright?” He asks sweetly, offering you a hand. You're not aware you've accepted it until he's already pulled you up back on the bed, cold hands cupping your slowly burning face, angling your head to meet his gaze. “You fell pretty hard. I'm sorry, did I startle you?”
You gape. Why is he touching you, and why is he being so nice?
And most importantly, why the fuck was he on your bed!?
“Um….” You try to place your thoughts into words. “Bed. You're in my bed.”
Ao Bing looks down at your rumpled covers and nods. “Yes. Is that a problem? It's big enough, no? And you've complained about feeling warm so often, and my skin is cold, so I decided it would help you sleep better.”
You gulp. “You're in my bed.”
“Yes? Haven't we already established this?”
Sometimes you wonder if memory loss wasn't the only problem he had.
“Ao Bing. You're in my bed.” You squirm out of his hold, slapping his hands away. “Without an invitation might I add! You can't just. Fucking pull up on me like that! At least warn me!”
God. You had just cuddled into him. Your fucking reputation was ruined….wait. No one else speaks to him ― nevermind, it's probably safe for the time.
“But. You like me, don't you?” Ao Bing insists, his hands now neatly sitting on his lap instead of trying to touch you. “And normally, couples should share a bed.”
“We aren't a couple.”
“We aren't?”
“No!!” What the fuck is he yapping about!?
Ao Bing's mouth makes an ‘o’ shape. His delicately trimmed brows furrow, and he holds his chin as he thinks. You'd like nothing more than to flick his forehead, if only you weren't currently reeling from shock, surprise and trying your best not to pass out or beat him to death with a pillow.
He looks up at you again and smiles.
“I forgot. Miss (Name), will you do me the honor of being my wife?”
“...”
You beat him with the pillow then fainted right after.
***
Ao Bing wants to sulk.
He's spent weeks, weeks, looking through the books, magazines and even your laptop for advice and ideas. Weeks trying to discover what he should do, how he should express his fondness for you. In the back of his mind, there would've been someone he would've naturally gone too, a father figure or a friend, but thinking about it hurts his head (and heart), so he looks for other things.
But not only do you chase him with your pillow for half the night, but you reject him!
Well, not really….but “marriage is too early for a relationship like this” does count as a rejection.
And it makes him so unhappy, because being around you makes him forget that he yearns for people he can't recall. Being around you makes him forget the fact he might possibly be without friend or family, with no one else but a stranger who saved his life and he's now completely in love with.
He holds onto your jacket, allowing you to lead him through different aisles, picking up different things to place in a grocery cart. Sometimes, just to piss you off, he'll grab something unconventional, like a bag of fish chips that you don't need, but you only throw it into your cart and keep walking.
“We should start slow, Ao Bing.”
He's not aware why you said that. He's not aware you want to give him an option to find someone else, to pick someone else, and rushing headfirst would make both sides hurt.
All he knows is you're being insufferable, like a friend he once knew. And thinking of that friend makes his heart hurt again, so he throws another box of cereal into your cart and sulks at you.
You pinch his cheek this time. “Cut that out. Aren't you supposed to be an adult?”
Ao Bing sniffs, but he can't say he minds it. It's the first time you've touched him in days, and your touch is comforting.
“Don't care,” he says in an ever so perceptive tone, watching you roll your eyes and shift away from him. “The cereal looks good.”
You glanced at the box he's chosen. “Lucky charms huh? Alright, fine. We'll have it.”
He expects you to pull away, to leave after you've said your piece.
But no. Your hand withdraws from his cheek but you're holding his hand, pulling him behind you.
It's better than nothing, at least. Ao Bing stops sulking and trails along behind you, his expression pleased as ever.
And if someone calls him a lovesick puppy while talking to you, well. Who cares.
You did, just so we're clear. You cared a lot when someone called Ao Bing trailing behind you a lovesick puppy, and you absolutely did fucking care when they called him your boyfriend.
It's not…like that! You brought him out to find new options, not let everyone think you two were solid!
Perfect. You sigh in your hands as he unpacks the groceries, placing them where they needed to be. Just fucking perfect. How the fuck is he supposed to get a girlfriend now!?
You dare to raise your head. He's still walking back and forth, a pleased smile on his expression. You notice that he'll glance at you, his cheeks turning a cute shade of red, and he'll dart off to the kitchen, leaving you feeling all hot and bothered.
Stupid fucking…. You curse and pinch the bridge of your nose. Ao Bing….come on my guy…
It takes a while, but the groceries are packed, and he sits with you on the sofa, staring at you, or at the tablet in your hands. You're hoping it's the latter as you shift in place, pretending to be focused on the blurry pictures on the screen.
Except you can't. You're more than aware of the gentle sounds of his breathing, and the brief skin contact that reminds you just how cold he really is. You're more than aware that he isn't staring at the device in your hand, but at you, at your face. You're made more aware of his presence as he closes the space to tuck a strand of fallen hair behind your ear once more, his fingertips brushing against your cheeks.
You close your eyes and sigh.
“Ao Bing?” You ask softly, raising your head to him. He tilts his head to show that he's listening, waiting for your response. “Why do you like me?”
The question has bothered you since his first confession. What was there to like about you? Being friends was one thing, but to like, like romance?
It's…odd.
Ao Bing blinks at you. His lashes are soft and full, and you want to desperately touch them.
You don't, of course. You have more proprietary than that.
“You remind me of someone I once knew,” he says, reigning you back to reality.
“What were they like?”
“I don't remember.” The smile he wears is nothing if not mournful. His gaze drifts to the fireplace, the crackle of wood burning in the background. You can see him fidgeting, his nails digging into his skin. Not hard enough to bleed, but with his skin so pale, it'd be difficult to miss the crescent marks. “All I remember…was that we were close. He was one of my first friends, you know.”
His tone is gentle, nostalgic. If you didn't know better, you'd even say there's something else. Something that tells you he felt more for this person than just ‘friends.’
“....I miss him. But I don't even remember his name.” Ao Bing glances at you. “But you remind me of him. Your smile, your attitude―” He reaches out, his thumb and index finger cold against your cheek as he squeezes. “When I'm with you, I feel like I'm with him.”
You don't know what to think. So you like me because I remind you of your friend you don't even remember!?
Maybe your expression is too obvious. Ao Bing laughs, a sweet sound that makes you feel warm within. He leans closer, your thighs pressing, and he gently pokes at your forehead.
“No. I like you because you're you.” He explains ever-so-nicely. “The memory is merely an added factor.”
“I feel offended still,” you complain, and he laughs. His arms wrap around you in turn, his face pressed into your shoulder.
“No need. I love you as I loved him. You're as different as you are similar.”
His arms squeeze you, just slightly. You can almost feel his smile against your skin as he continues, “But…I'm more than willing to show you myself, if you will let me.”
***
Ao Bing's hands are cold, as he is rough. Sweet words fall from his lips, even as they're pressed everywhere ― your pulse, chest, thighs…
Your hands leave blaring red marks on his skin. He doesn't seem to mind though, as his do the same.
His cheeks are flushed pink, his eyes halfclosed. His hair, loose, falls, perfectly draping his face.
“You're pretty,” he murmurs, and kisses you, hard. His teeth, sharp, nips at your lower lip, and he pulls back. “I love you.”
You can't bring yourself to answer.
But it's fine. He knows by the scrunch of your nose, and the angry pout you wear as you angle your head away, that you feel the same.
And he doesn't mind, not really.
Because he likes you too much to care.
***
Ao Bing's daughter looks nothing like you. She has her father's eyes, deep and almost knowing, and his pale skin. Her hair is a much darker shade of blue, but even so, it's impossible to miss.
You remember your elder brothers giggling at you, joking that there was no way the bloodline would continue with such genes. They even remark that they were surprised their little sister could even have children, that the possibilities of you capable of procreating was almost zero to none. If it hadn't been your father, bless him, shooing them out of the room while you recovered from labour, you would've most likely jumped out of the bed to show them what for.
Ao Bing was a good father. He sat with you for the few days you were in the hospital, never leaving your side unless it was to check your baby.
“What do you think we should name her?” Ao Bing had asked, his hand fitting nicely with yours. “Perhaps..maybe…”
“Lánxī.”
Ao Bing had spared you a glance. During the months since you discovered you were pregnant, you had insisted and pestered that everything be up to Ao Bing's decision. Though you weren't determined to be an absent mother, it wasn't like you really knew what the hell it meant to be one. You were the last child of your family, practically babied!
To his memory, Ao Bing had a feeling that he was a last child too. Though the memory was still foggy, all but a blur in his mind, he knew somewhere that he was a last child too. The third born, maybe.
Still, he never was one to deny you. He did as you ordered and asked, and so to hear you at that moment was a surprise.
“Lánxī,” he repeated, his thumb brushing against your knuckles. “Do you want it?”
“Mhm.” You smiled tiredly at him. “Do you want it?”
He smiled. Nodding his head as he kissed your knuckles. “I want it,” he said, bringing his chair closer to yours. “As long as you do.”
“A temple?” You looked up from where you had little Lánxī sitting, wiping the smudge of porridge from her chubby cheek. “You want to visit a temple?”
Ao Bing nodded. He flashed his sweet girl a smile, his heart melting at the sight of her cooing, small fists waving wildly. She giggled and cooed, stuffing that fist in her mouth while you fussed over her.
“Your father says…that your family has been longtime worshippers of Nezha.” Something about that name felt heavy on his tongue.
In the time that he spent getting to know your family, he had learnt and discovered a few things. One of them that had stuck out to him was the fact they were religious. He remembered, you had mentioned it, hadn't you? That you barely had time to pay a visit to a temple, though you missed going?
“Would you want too?” He remembered asking, watching your expression nervously. “I won't force you, of course.”
“Eh.” You had shrugged, offering another spoonful to little Lánxī. “Sure. Why not?”
So here he is now. Lánxī sits in the little carrier he wears, sleepily peacefully against his chest. She always seems to sleep easier with him than you. Though you always sulked about it, Ao Bing always assured you that it wasn't a case of favoritism. His daughter simply preferred the coolness of his body compared to yours.
He stares at the statue before him, his head tilted. Something about it feels familiar, the wavy hair carved from stone, the painted red crescents on its cheekbones.
“Nezha,” he repeats to himself, a soft murmur. As if he has to remind himself something.
He glances at you, your hands clasped together before the statue. A warmth spreads ― side by side, a statue and his partner. There's something on the tip of his tongue, a desire to express something. That, perhaps, if he says it, he can remember.
He glances at the statue again, and swears, for a second, that he remembers.
Nezha…
Lánxī stirs. He's distracted, glancing down at the big blue eyes that blinked up at him, and Ao Bing smiles.
Maybe he'll remember, at one point. But right now, he's happy as he is.
Content.
***
“Lánxī! Don't run!”
“I'm not running, Papa!”
Nezha crosses his arms and smiles. Two familiar figures step through the threshold that leads to his temple. They could be twins, with their stances and smiles, but one of them is a girl, for a start, and is less reserved. More hyper, for lack of a better term.
He props a hand under his chin, making himself comfortable where he sits on his statue, carved for him, and watches as both kneel, offering incense and snacks that he quite enjoys.
It's been years. Decades, centuries, since he last saw him. His best friend. His only friend, really.
To see him here, in the flesh, in person. Nezha had initially thought he'd been dreaming, that this wasn't real….
But no. He was here. His Ao Bing was here, and alive.
And had a family…of his own…
Nezha almost laughs as he recalls Taiyi’s words―that Ao Bing's wife, bless her, was an almost exact copy of him. He hadn't want to believe it, at first, but the more that she had visited his temple, the more he found it harder to deny.
At least he's happy. That's what Nezha cares about. That his friend is alive, and well. Though he bares no memory and no recognition of him, Nezha doesn't care. Doesn't even mind.
Because of all else, Ao Bing is here. He visits daily, every chance he has, with his daughter Lánxī. Sometimes his wife comes, and Nezha gets to meet his family.
Time will eventually go by, was Taiyi’s words to him. On that faithful day, when Ao Bing had disappeared. And you'll forget all that was between you and him.
He hasn't. And he won't.
He'll cherish their memory. Ao Bing's, forever.
Because he loves him, and adores him. And whatever else, Ao Bing is happy.
And that's what matters.

Spoilers for season 5
S5E1
When Macaque is going off on Wukong about how his companions are suddenly back and he didn't think that suspicious (which is a valid point btw, when MK forgets to hold his braincells, this season it's Macaque that holds them for him)
Wukong's reaction is to go defensive, because why would he question why they are back, when Macaque is back too.
Wukong will not say it because why would he, but he is most probably glad that his friends are back. I mean Season 4 ended with him saying that's life. Just him and his buddies having a good time on the beach.
Macaque saying "all his old companions" are back, and leaving himself out of that statement is also a quiet jab. "His old friends, your journey companions are back." What... are you not his friend too, Macaque? Are you not also back?
That pouty face to me looks hurt, and that's why Macaque backed down. I don't think he knows why Wukong looks hurt, but he is so he backs off to get the conversation back to intended tracks. MK's identity.
Macaque from his pov was trying to warn Wukong that he is being too careless, but it came accross as criticising, something that Wukong never took well, but when Nezha does it in Season 4 he only gets a crayon thrown at him, when Mac does it, it actually stings so of course he bites back. Not that he doesn't think about what Mac said to him, but well... these monkeys are horrible in communication.
I grade them both -F. Try again next year.
S5E2
Wukong picks a fight with Macaque again, which wouldn't be strange given the situation, things are tense.
But it's not like it's unreasonable for Macaque to be upset about being jailed. What is he supposed to do? Cheer?
What makes this scene kind of elevated from being a casual "things are shitty, let's bicker" scene is that... MK takes note of it nonverbally.
"You think it's my idea of a good time? Trapped in here with you?" *bites his lip
which is... whoaww tsundere much? Not like you are not also trapped there with MK... did you... forget he is there? Weird case of Macaque prioritization no. 1.
And it's not like it was just a gag and we forget it, because a few seconds later MK takes note of this verbally too.
"Nezha help, i don't wanna be a divorce lawyer." /j
The season is full of Wukong's micro facial expressions.
Half a minute ago he was pissed at Macaque and now he chuckles about how Macaque just outed MK's lawyer bit like it was nothing.
And he wasn't really laughing about MK specifically, because as MK continues his bit, his expression turns to annoyed.
Nothing, just appreciate him laughing along the get away stunt while you still can
Wukong's line here is very deliberate
"I don't trust anyone who isn't standing here with us right now." He knows what he said, and knows who heard it. An olive branch alright, but he still is shocked when his trust is proven to be placed right:
And one example of rightly placed Macaque-prioritisation (the only example, really)
Not 3 minutes ago he was laughing along, having fun and we already have the stress lines back.
People have pointed it out already, but you guys are actually correct to notice:
Wukong, you were not hit on your chest, your head is what's supposed to be hurting. And look at those increasing amount of stress lines, whaow. When MK asks if Mac got away, Wukong knows no.
And let me remind you, in Season 4 Wukong sarcastically says: "Oh right, because you always RUSH to my rescue." Well there you go honey, Macaque rushed to your rescue.
S5E7 Into the Pagoda
The thing with the 100 eyed demon is that as we saw with MK, he is looking for THE most traumatising memory with his victims.
Wukong's canonical most traumatising memory *IS* his fight with Macaque, when there could have been hundreds other memories. One of the freshest ones seeing Azure disintegrate in front of him (and yes we did see him be upset about it), but i guess that's not enough to make him cry. But if you want another example of hurtful memory (strictly taking from the show because that's what we know for sure happened) is when Mei chewed him out for being a bad friend to MK. Or... well i guess Wukong is the older brother of MK now.
Look at those stress lines
Before this scene, let me remind you, the last we saw Wukong was having fun on Tang's expense.
Macaque once again sees how Wukong is upset but has no idea that he is the reason behind it and ends up being rather inconsiderate of Wukong's mood.
(This exchange is tonally deaf from Macaque's side.
It's akin to like when you just lost your pet and when you get home your mom goes off on you for not having washed the dishes.)
Wukong really doesn't care in this second that they got captured, nor that MK went off alone in the pagoda. This is Wukong's second case of "weird Macaque-priority". Something that he really shouldn't allow himself in the apocalypse.
The third time he prioritises Macaque is even weirder. MK just left to KILL HIMSELF. You really don't have time to check on Macaque, Wukong.
But he does.
Even Macaque calls him out on that:
"Stop the kid, you idiot!" and Macaque is right. TF you doing wasting time Wukong?
At the end Wukong is being perfectly open about Mac being important to him.
Thing is, it's also well timed that he starts to care about Macaque again, because alarmingly lot of times this Season Macaque was isolated from everyone. Not in a physical sense, although that too happened, but in imagery as well:
Everyone is grouped: Mei with Wukong, Tang Pigsy Sandy, Nezha and his father. Note their position too.
And yes, the hand holding block happened on purpose too, btw:
Macaque's reward in season 4 for helping the good guys was that he is no longer alone, unlike how he was from season 1 to 3. But season 5 suggests that he *IS* still alone, and while Wukong seeks him out, they are not there yet. Wukong is no longer alone, but Macaque still is.

LMK S5 trailer, Chinese pantheon infodump, and some ideas
…Man, normally, I feel the urge to write fix-it AUs after rewatching episodes and coming across particularly bizarre theories and takes, not before the new season's even out.
Thanks, S5 trailer.
Consider this your spoiler warning, because the rest of this post will all be my personal opinions about a few major story beats that were revealed + the rough outline for a fix-it AU.
It's also a bit ranty, and features some criticisms of the general narrative, so if that's not your cup of tea, feel free to avoid this one.
Li Jing becoming JE/the regent of the Celestial Realm is just hilariously absurd. I mean, it makes a teeny tiny bit more sense than the "Nezha will be the new JE" fan theory, but that's not a very high bar.
1) In-universe, he had done a grand total of nothing while shit was hitting the fan, and only showed up after it was all over. Which, tbh, isn't too far from his role in FSYY. No, wait, at least in FSYY, he killed Luo Xuan via a pagoda to the head, after the guy had all his fire-based magical treasures neutralized and taken away by Princess Longji.
Yeah, congrats, LMK's Li Jing, you've somehow become even more useless than your FSYY and JTTW counterparts——which is a true feat.
2) Even if someone's making him JE/regent, it wouldn't be the Ten Kings. To put it simply: the Underworld doesn't have that authority. They are the most pathetic of all divine bureaucracies, who pretty much only show up to get pushed around and revive the occasional dead guy in JTTW (and I still love them).
Like, they ain't no Hades or Satan. Just the 10 judges of the Dead People Supreme Court. To heavily paraphrase Di Ting in the original JTTW novel:
"How much power do Underworld gods really have? (幽冥之神,能有多少法力)" "...Certainly not enough to stop a rampaging demonic macaque who's as strong as SWK, if I say the truth out loud in here and piss him off. Just send them to the Buddha, please."
An analogy: if the Celestial Host is the imperial court, the Underworld is the ministry in charge of judicial processes and prisons. They don't even have authority over the imperial censors who answer directly to the emperor, let alone the power to determine a successor to the throne during a major crisis.
If this was to make the tiniest bit of sense, Li Jing would be the one commanding THEM, not the other way around. Or if it's Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha himself giving orders to Li Jing…for some reason.
But we know that ain't happening bc of the show's strange aversion to showing Buddhist deities on screen, not to mention it would be very OOC for Ksitigarbha, whose job is granting relief and salvation to souls in the Path of Hell, not judging and punishing them like the Ten Kings.
3) If you must make Li Jing the emperor/regent, you have a more mythos-accurate and obvious choice than the Ten Kings, considering you already got the Four Divine Beasts involved!
Yes, I'm talking about their bosses, the humanoid "directional + elemental gods": Lord Father of the East (Wood), Queen Mother of the West (Metal), Emperor Zhenwu of the North (Water).
No South though...because our mythos can't agree on a single directional god of the South, but for shit and giggles, just imagine Zhurong, Yandi, Huaguang, and the Star of Fiery Virtues all sitting on the same narrow bench, staring awkwardly at each other.
Maybe we can have Ziwei, Great Emperor of the Central Sky and North Stars, who is one of the Four Sovereigns(四御) in Daoism (two of which could also be an alternate choice, but maybe a bit too obscure for foreign audiences).
He commands the stellar deities and heavenly bodies——which the Four Divine Beasts would technically fall under, as guardians of the four quadrants of the sky, each in charge of 7 Lunar Mansions.
4) But if you already have these deities, why the hell would any of them make Li Jing the regent? Wouldn't it be more likely for them to create a Celestial Council of Regents themselves, with Devaraja Li Jing under their command as the leader of what's left of the celestial army?
Like, you can still have them, or one of them, going after the gang and ordering Li Jing to put the fillet on SWK.
I can see Zhenwu the Demon-Vanquisher doing that, since the fillet isn't too different from what he did to Huaguang and a lot of the demons he subdued in JTTN: feeding them magical water/fire pills that would corrode/ignite their insides whenever they tried to resist.
(Yeah, compared to that, the fillet would look like the lenient option, since it's just pain and won't actually dissolve/cook you alive from the inside out...)
And it wouldn't be bc he thought SWK was to blame for the Brotherhood's epic fuck-up...somehow. Like, what even is that logic?!
I mean, I can kinda see the Ten Kings doing it as a pre-emptive "Don't blame us for our shitty security, blame that guy over there!" move...except they are no longer answering to any higher authorities who'd hold them responsible at that point!
"What about Li Jing?" You may ask. Yeah, WHAT ABOUT LI JING? Why does Li Jing have to get involved in this?
If he's forcing the Ten Kings to pass judgement on the gang (which surely doesn't look like it in the trailers), why's he enlisting the help of the weakest faction and not, y'know, his celestial soldiers and other gods?
If the Ten Kings get Li Jing to be their enforcer...well, how the Eighteen Hells did they manage that? What could the Ghost Supreme Court and their crappy prison-torture chamber-soul customs office complex even offer Li Jing as a bribe?
And if their goals were to avoid responsibilities by blaming someone else, how stupid did they have to be to actively involve/create a higher authority who can punish them once the cat gets out of the proverbial bag, instead of, I dunno, just stay where they are and keep their head down???
So in my fix-it AU, it's more of a "Better safe than sorry" scenario, where every demon working for the new Celestial Council must prove their loyalty via swallowing the water/fire pill, now that even more dangerous demons have escaped and are running around in the aftermath of S4.
And Great Sage and company are not exempt from that new law either——"If you are truly righteous and Not Like Them and not planning to rebel, what's there to be afraid of?"
Horrified by the Demon-Vanquishing Mansion's 16th century standards of "justice" and "mercy", they naturally would not have any of it, and thus the conflict begins.
Not only would this show the fallout of Azure's misguided rebellion——that, in trying to make a better world, he had made it 120% worse for both humanity and demonkind in less drastic and more realistic ways aside from dooming reality to irreversible destruction, it would also help with the major show-not-tell problem about Celestial cruelty bc the "good guys" in power saw no problem with this kind of shit.
If you want your lawful antagonists who take Order to its extremes, the warrior sovereign in black leading an elite army of demon-hunters + penal legions made of "reformed" demons would be a better choice than the Ghost Supreme Court, don't ya think?
(Fun fact: in Zaju plays, Zhenwu was often said to be the boss of Nezha and Erlang, so him commanding Li Jing wouldn't be too out of place either.)
Now, you may ask, why do I even care? After all, isn't it clear that the show is neither mythos-accurate nor trying to be, considering the JE got K.O.ed by a Bodhisattva's cat of all things?
Not to mention the season's not even out yet, so why jump to conclusions so quickly? Maybe the actual episodes will have explanations that make sense. Relax.
...Cause I don't mind less-than-stellar animations if the story's good, and since I keep noticing the less-than-stellar animations, it clearly isn't good enough.
Also, it's not like it's only the implications that are absurd——my problem is with the whole premise of "Li Jing becoming the new JE/Regent" and "The gang is prosecuted by the Ten Kings for bullshit reasons, even though these guys should not, and never have the power to enforce anything over SWK."
I don't like calling narrative choices "wrong" per se, and prefer to see it on a gradient of "least to most narrative potential". When it comes to adaptations, if the option that is faithful to the original work will result in a less interesting story, then I'll happily take the one that isn't as faithful and takes creative liberties, but makes a better story.
And here, I feel like being faithful to the Chinese mythos inspirations will add to the narrative potential instead of subtract from it, and the idea they come up with kinda...goes against how Chinese pantheons work, in a very simplified and "westernized" manner.
Mostly bc I am a Chinese Underworld mythos lover and think they deserve better than being ominous Hades/Grim Reaper knockoffs. And out of all the possible Chinese gods, Nezha's asshole dad is the least qualified or interesting candidate to fill in the power vaccum left by JE's death.

Slight spoilers for LMK season 5 ig but I have to rant;
Do you think the whole chaos/order thing going on in that season (& likely continuing into the next season) means the Chinese god of primordial chaos (the same kind of chaos NHD was talking about on the last ep of the season) Hundun might make an appearance & possibly be the higher power pulling the strings we kept getting hints to in season 5? Does that mean he would be a sort of narrative foil to Nuwa (who obviously represents the side of order), like different ‘solutions’ to the same ‘problem’?
Do you think Wukong & Macaque are meant to represent the imbalance of the universe in a VERY literal sense? Like, Wukong came into existence just to cause chaos in a too organized world while Macaque came into existence to measure out Wukong’s chaos? I know MK is called ‘The Harbinger of Chaos’, but Wukong also used to be ‘The Havoc of Heaven’ which are definitely VERY close descriptors. I mean, the Heavenly kingdom is very clearly representing itself as the deciding body of order in LMK, but it’s also clear that have little to ZERO clue what they’re actually doing (Li Jing) and/or don’t have the real power to decide anything about the balance even if they want to (Nezha & Azure Lion).
Is MK really the harbinger of chaos, or is he just the warning everyone kept ignoring until the problem exploded right in front of them? Does MK even fully understand the power this forced title holds? How he is part of the weight that balances a scale before it falls over itself? Did Wukong ever understand his own similar title?
I fear Macaque is right; they really are a bit too alike for comfort. Maybe the loss of Macaque (as the orderly counterpart to Wukong) meant that chaos could completely fly off the handle and throw the world into the ‘early restart’ Nuwa mentioned? Does that mean there could be another celestial monkey we’ll get to meet that becomes the new representation of order to act as a narrative foil for MK (like LBD used to be)? Is there already another monkey of order out there?
Will the sun and the moon clash again? Will the consequences be the same (history repeats itself) or will they be far more dire (history learns from itself)?
Will the cycle never end as long as someone who thinks they know better than the universe remains in power?

SPOILERS WARNING THIS HAS SOME PRETTY HEAVY SEASON FOUR SPOILERS.
M.k practically dragged you towards flower fruit mountain causing you to stumble a bit.
"So you're saying you unlocked a cursed scroll and were attacked by DBK, Iron fan, Spider Queen, Nezha, and some other demons you've never seen before?" Tang asked.
"No," M.k released your wrist allowing you to rub away the slight sore spot he'd left from tugging you along so unexpectedly. "I'm saying we were attacked by INK VERSIONS of DBK, Iron fan, Spider Queen, and all those other ones you just said." He clarified simply as though that was obvious somehow.
You glanced around seeing nothing amiss other than the massive troves of items Monkey king had 'borrowed' in his very extensive lifetime whilst your friends spoke among themselves.
"Well it looks like what ever it was is gone now." You pointed out as kindly as you could without sounding accusing.
M.k dashed about throwing gusts of wind in your face likely without thinking.
"Hey you're right! Whew. No ink demons!" He cheered.
"Hey, I think I found the scroll!" Sandy announced lifting a band of blackened wood pieces rolled together.
"Sandy wait!" M.k yelled as the scroll unfurled.
Instantly black ink spilled from the scroll and thunder clapped.
Sandy released the scroll and the black in absorbed it into it's depths as it grew. Figures began to emerge from the pitch inky depths their eyes shimmering an otherworldly blue that sent a chill through your blood.
"Aight, Tangy!" Mei cheered grabbing Tang and tossing him forward. "You're up!"
Tang stood up and yelled to the mass with what you could only call an empty ultimatum before versions of the gang's ancestors began to appear from the black muck. And just then they attacked.
You released a small scream as the black goo charged at you. The only reaction you had time for was to shoot your arms up Infront of your face when a Jade barrier appeared between you and the goo.
With a small gasp you stumbled backwards flinching as the black liquid slammed against the barrier which never so much as cracked under the barrage.
Suddenly you felt M.k grab your shoulders and yank you backwards just as glowing blue and yellow streaks shot past you creating a barrier of their own.
Just then a large lionesque man stepped past you, M.k, and Mei. He twirled his sword making Mei's eyes go wide.
"Oooo I want that!" She fangirled to herself.
Just then two more figures emerged from the ink a birdlike figure and and elephant one. They shouted simultaneously words you couldn't decipher. But your gaze flicked back to the Lion.
He released a small sigh.
"Forgive me, brothers." He uttered quietly before brandishing his sword. Each swing shot light strands that beat the ink backwards before banishing it altogether. Then he shot out an arm his hand glowing blue.
The scroll took on an aura of the same hue, floated into the air, and a rune appeared above it which seemed to suck the remaining ink back in, then sealed the scroll.
You blinked as the scroll fell into the lion's grasp. His gaze remained on it musingly before both M.k and Mei launched at him slamming into his back.
He slammed into the ground but picked himself up taking his sword in hand.
"Hand over the scroll children."
"No You hand over the scroll!" M.k demanded before Mei corrected him with a whisper in his ear.
"We have the scroll! Now free our friends and we don't have to get physical." He declared correctively.
"You expect me to believe you are not responsible for stealing the scroll despite it being in your possession?"
You listened to your friends go back and forth and basically just watched the lion introduce himself and explain the situation.
Still didn't explain fully but you guessed it was the best you were going to get.
The Azure lion and M.k spoke back and forth eventually coming to the agreement that he and Mei would enter the scroll and retrieve your friends.
"Woah wait?! Are you insane?!" You demanded stepping between them. "We don't even know this guy! He could be using you!"
Azure lion blinked as if taken aback by your comment.
"If we are going to do this, we need to trust each other." He spoke with a gentle reassurance that some how only irked you more.
"Y/n," M.k addressed you stealing your attention. "What other choice do we have?"
You stared at him for a moment. This was insane. You couldn't just trust this lion...man...thing! But then... M.k was right. You had no other choice. And who knew what the scroll would do to your friends the longer they were in there. You breathed out a sigh.
"Fine! But I'm staying here and watching him. Just to make sure he doesn't try anything."
M.k grinned and hugged you.
"Thanks Y/n."
"Alright." The lion smiled at you kindly. "If you wish to stay then I'll need you to stand behind me." He gestured to a spot behind him.
You eyed him warily but walked over. You knelt behind him and if you weren't mistaken saw him smirk before wishing M.k and Mei good luck then releasing the ink which promptly sucked them both into the scroll.
A sick feeling mounted in your chest as he resealed the scroll.
"Now, then all there's left to do is wait." He announced with a tone that seemed resigned. Then he looked over his shoulder at you.
"Y/n, was it?"
Your gaze flicked back to the scroll.
"Is..there a way to check on them?"
The lion smiled then chuckled.
"As a matter of fact, yes. Give me a moment." His eyes flashed with golden light and then he fell very still.
In the moments you guessed he was astral projecting. As his form was similar to his so called 'brother' monkey king.
This chance you took standing and stepping around him so you could observe him more easily.
He had definitive muscle. No one could deny that. He wore a cape and something you could possibly identify as a 'half shirt'.
You frowned.
Something about him seemed.... Insincere. Perhaps not his kindness but something. Something was hidden here. And you were going to find out what.
Just then his golden eyes flicked open causing you to flinch slightly.
He smiled almost amusedly.
"Admiring from a distance are we?"
You felt your cheeks heat but pressed away the reaction, deciding to fold your arms and frown instead.
"No."
His smile remained firmly intact.
"I don't blame you for not trust me. Infact, I count you as wise for such. But still, I have a role to play in aiding you."
"Forgive me if I find it suspicious that you just happened to show up right on time." You shot back suspiciously.
Now his smile fell into a sad frown.
"But I didn't. Your friends were pulled into the scroll regardless of my efforts. Surely, if my arrival was 'right on time' as you say, wouldn't they have been saved?" The information he offered almost humbly.
You sighed. He had a point, a good one at that.
"Perhaps if you gave me a chance to prove myself trustworthy," He smiled hopefully. "Then you could lay your suspicions aside."
You studied him carefully. Nothing about him confirmed your suspicions and something about this was indeed sincere. But what was true and what was false. Nothing in his appearance gave you any clue if anything looking at his muscles was beginning to distract you so you tore your gaze away.
"Alright."
From the corner of your eye you could see him perk up some.
"When my friends are safe, then I'll trust you."
Just then Azure wilted some. It was slight, near inpercieveable, but there. The next instant he was grinning widely.
"Very well then. But...until then-"
You glanced back at him fully.
"Why don't we get to know each other a bit better?" He offered kindly.
Your gaze flicked to the scroll. You didn't really want to sit here in silence until they returned.
"Ok." You agreed sitting across from him.
"Well I'm sure you've heard of me." He grinned proudly.
You allowed your silence to rectify that assumption coupling it with a blank look.
"Ah...I suppose not, but in any case I have introduced myself to some degree. I do believe it's your turn."
You gave a small start.
"Oh...well alright. My name is Y/n L/n technically I'm the grand daughter of the Jade emperor."
Now it was his turn to give a small start his eyes widening quite a bit.
"Oh don't look at me like that." You sighed. "I'm nothing special my mother married a mortal so she was basically cast out of heaven."
Azure hummed.
"I was wondering what power you might possess that would allow you to block the scroll as you did." He held his chin contemplatively. "Are you and your grandfather close?" He rose a brow.
"Not intimately. But I know of him and obviously vice versa." You responded with a shrug.
"How very interesting." Azure mumbled more to himself than you.
"And you?" You urged him to start explaining which seemed to break him from his reverie.
"Ah yes! Well I have many a story to tell, I'm afraid."
You shrugged.
"Not like we've got something else to do."
He grinned then began his story.
As the hours passed you began to be more intrigued by his many stories and admittedly, you were beginning to enjoy his presence.
"Wow, so you defied orders just so that family wouldn't be hurt?" You asked perking up a bit.
"Well of course." Azure replied. "I couldn't very simply let them drown." The sincerity of the statement struck you.
He wasn't lying. Not even a little.
Some part of your heart skipped a beat.
"That's...very kind of you." You smiled.
Azure gave a small start then grew a slightly mischievous smile.
"You think so?"
The low notes of his voice caused your heart to stammer and a flood of heat to rush to your cheeks.
"I-I- you- but- ugh! Of course I think so because it is!" You protested with a huffed.
Azure laughed openly then.
You flinched slightly at the abrupt outburst but relaxed soon after. His laughter was pleasant to listen to.
"Forgive me, y/n." He excused once his laughter died out. "Teasing you is simply an amusement that never becomes tiresome."
Wait never? Seemed a bit early to assume teasing you didn't ever get boring. But you shrugged never the less.
"I can take it. Don't worry."
He grinned.
"Of that I am certain."
Nightfall came and you began to worry. Shouldn't M.k and Mei have finished by now? You weren't sure how friend swiping scrolls worked but you hadn't thought it would take this long.
"Have faith, y/n." Azure spoke suddenly breaking you from your thoughts. "Your friends can do this. They can do it together." He gave you a smile that eased your anxiety some.
"You're right." You nodded. "I can trust them."
Then you continued to wait. Hours slipped by. You and Azure spoke fairly often but as the hour grew later you started to get too drowsy to stay awake.
At some point you must have drifted off to sleep because you awoke a bit later to a soft fabric being drapped over your form.
You opened your eyes slightly only to see Azure stepping away no longer wearing his cloak. A thick warmth enveloped you just then and you slipped off into unconsciousness.

It is very exhausting being in western fandom spaces sometimes. Tell me why I just wanted to enjoy a cute oubing ship vid on tiktok, and half the comments section was about people saying you can't ship them???
I wanna complain into the void, so here's a comprehensive of why Oubing/藕饼/Lotus Root Cake is fine (and even if it wasn't, why I don't give a shit):
(Spoiler warning for Nezha 2)
1. "You can't ship them cause they're brothers'": No, they are not brothers. Not by any definition of the word. Not by blood - not even sworn brothers technically, because they only refer to each other as best friends. They each have their own parents - those parents are not related to each other in any way, shape, or form. One of them is a freaking dragon, an entirely different species. Also, they're technically made of lotuses now. They weren't raised together either. Clarifying this point feels ridiculous.
2. "But they used to be part of the chaos pearl": If you wanted to define them by any type of relationship, they are soulmates. This is not me trying to spin them romantically, I mean they are literally soulmates. Their spirits are each half of a single Chaos Pearl, and they each represent opposite halves. They are literally soulmates and yin and yang.
3. "But they're children!": Are they three years old? Yes - and also no. (this is edited: I saw an official post that did say their ages were 3, not 6). They've been alive for centuries as a chaos pearl. I need you to understand that the original entity we saw at the beginning of Nezha 1, IS a creature that has been alive for thousands of years. They had personality too while they were fighting Taiyi. They were made into the pearls by the cauldron. Now, their mortal bodies as we understand it, is 3 (again edited. I originally said 6 cause I wasn't sure whether or not to count the 3 years of pregnancy). But because they're not really human, and their developmental stages therefore don't mirror a human, the movie shows them maturing into an adult form in the span of about 3 years. How do we know this? Ao Bing is the same age as Nezha, and he went from a baby to his adult form in those 3 years. The only reason Nezha is still in a child form is because he has the qiankun circle suppressing him. This is also the reason that putting the circle on his wrist releases his adult form. Also it's sort of maybe implied by the end of Nezha 2 that he may stay permanently in his adult form, since he reformed his body into it while he was in The Soup™. I dunno how accurate this part is so I suppose we'll see by Nezha 3. I would like to point out further that no three year old talks or acts like they do. Ao Bing and Nezha have very complete vocabularies, and are able to understand the complexities of their circumstances. They're both new to the world in this form, but they're not at the mental capacity of a 3 year old. It's like if you were dropped into a new form of existence with an adult brain.
4. "Nooo, why are you shipping them now": This ship is NOT NEW. It's been around since at least 2019. It is WILDLY popular in China. Back when Nezha 1 first came out, oubing literally won an award for best couple. I want you to understand the scale - from my understanding, they beat wangxian in cql. Y'all can correct me if I got this part wrong because I can't find the source of where I read this information, but if it's true, that's wild. I know the award part is correct. There was an official shampoo ad that reads like a shipping comic. Now that Nezha 2 came out, it is still one of the most popular ships. Every other post on my social media has been about Nezha 2 and at least half of that has been Oubing. There are over 2000 chinese fics on ao3 currently. Stop with this "why are you shipping them now", WE'VE BEEN SHIPPING THEM.
5. "It's not canon.": Not that I give a shit what's canon or even what the original creator thinks about shipping usually, but Jiaozi, aka the director of the movie, has stated that while he wrote Nezha and Ao Bing to just be a friendship that he thinks it is fine if people ship them. I'm pretty sure he also said something along the lines of 'people can interpret things how they want' or something.
6. Even if all of the points I made were not the case, I cannot stress enough how little I care about what someone should or should not ship. If you don't like it, just block the fanart/fic/video and move on. I promise society will not crumble because someone decides to ship two fictional characters from a mythology movie. We will be fine.
(Also if you see anyone in the chinese fandom write 藕饼cp, the cp stands for "couple". Just to clarify. They use different terms for shipping in chinese fandoms, they'll say they "ke CP" aka ship a couple)
Some of the comments I've seen make me wonder if people have even watched the movies. 'You can't ship them cause they're brothers', god don't make me laugh.
Don't let them find out that the chinese fandom is also shipping Ao Bing and Nezha from the 1979 cartoon, they'd lose their minds.

Know what? Maybe instead of venting to Sandy, Macaque ends up telling the hsi side of the story and why he chose to do the thing she did to Tang. In the actual canon there are only two people he really seemed to open up to when it came to his feelings regarding Wukong before his redemption, and that was MK which is understanable as he's Wukong's apprentice and soemone Macaque can see a bit of himself in, and for some godforsaken reason, Tang during the Lantern City Talent Show when he warns him about what happens to people who get too close to Wukong.
Absolutely anon, you're right.
In the case of Macaque having his own venting time - I could see it partly occuring during;
Briefly when He, Nezha, and Tang are locked up together in the East Sea Palace. Macaque gives Tang an idea of who Wukong had become during the war + what monster had escaped the Furnace, hence the reason they broke up just before the Journey. Nezha backs Macaque up on this - he saw/fought what had exited the Furnace that day.
With PIF. Despite her anger towards him, she'd be sympathetic to his reasoning for not wanting to but Wukong in danger. But she's able to explain more clearly to Mac why Wukong is so upset with him right now - i.e. he secretly feels that Mac sees him as weak/helpless/untrustworthy, and that Mac leaving to investigate LBD was proof of such opinions. Mac is mortified.
Properly gets to vent to Tang when the gang is in Lantern City, trying to find the last Ring (because who puts the *real* Ring of Light in some random Lantern hanging above the city?). HIm and Tang have some hotel cocktails (the lego sets had a cut Lotus Hotel area fro Lantern City that would have hosted the Ring) and bitch about their respective husbands. Here Macaque reveals his true fear of LBD/why she's more dangerous than the book says; spoilers it involved MK's egg and Wukong almost dying.
Macaque going to the moon and having some sibling talk with Chang'e. His big sis is very wise on matters of the heart and worrying about those you love. She might just sit both married monkeys down for some impromtu couple's counselling + mooncake binge.
Macaque also likely vents on accident to Yuebei and Luzhen as he's tending to them - something he genuinely missed in the months he'd been scouring heaven and hell. Only for the up-til-now-silent Luzhen to waddle up to Wukong and babble "bama sad. peas kiss."

HAVENT DRAWN IN 2 MONTHS (spoiler I guess, shield your eyes kids, this is a warning idk how spoilers work)
Im a responsible adult now ,furthering my studies.
Anyways watched the newest season of LMK and the most relatable thing from Wukong is him crying throughout the whole season. Actually me this month, but I'm also glad he's not emotional constipated like another monkey we know-
Anyways might redraw that hand holding scene ,who knows. I also wanna say I kept crying to see Macaque,Mei and Nezha halfway through the season. (My M&M's, which my buddy pal can attest to that)

okay fine ill write out my thoughts on Nezha because i have a bunch of them. tbh i feel kinda weird about being perceived about anything related to Nezha... not least because of yume so im tagging this veryyy sparingly. edit from halfway through writing the post: this shit is SO FUCKING LONG??? im colouring and bolding and smalltexting everything so it isnt a big block of white.
1 day later edit: its over 5000 words lol help me. also edited and added a few clarifications
and obviously, MAJOR SPOILER WARNING for both Nezha films.
TABLE OF CONTENTS NEZHA 1 1. the jokes 2. the story 3. other notes NEZHA 2 1. the jokes + overview 2. the story PERSONAL NOTES
NEZHA 1
1. the jokes
we must start with the first movie. i have said this so many times in every review to my friends and family and on Letterboxd but i will say it again. i believe Nezha 1 suffered from what ive dubbed the "Wandering Earth effect", where they put in a lot of cheap jokes because theyre worried the film wont do well. but then they get greenlit to make a sequel and now have the confidence to go all in and blow everyone away.
slight tangent to talk about Wandering Earth—its a Chinese film about the sun dying so earth has to rocket away from it and find a new place to live. Wandering Earth 1 was extremely underwhelming for me, littered with a lot of random jokes i was kind of meh about, and it felt kind of disjointed overall. which is why i barely remembered it when i went to watch the sequel, which i was absolutely floored by. then i went to rewatch the WE1 and was like "what the fuck is this?!?!" like, my ratings for WE1 and 2 are 1.5 stars and 5 stars respectively. not that my ratings are very good metrics honestly but the point is the quality difference is so big.
after i finished Nezha 1 (before watching Nezha 2 the very next day lol) i had this hypothesis because Nezha 1 had a lot of cheap jokes as well and since Nezha 2 was now the fucking bestselling animated movie of all time, there had to be a jump in quality.
i really felt like the quality of the first movie steadily increased as the number of jokes decreased lol. like at first there were a lot of gags (ugh "guy screams like a little girl" trope my beloathed. okay we get it ha ha its funny when a big tough guy acts like a girl ha ha isnt he such a pussy!!!!!) but the story started getting more serious and they decreased. they didnt vanish completely, but thats fine tbh. they just need to be tasteful and not overwhelming or over-the-top, which i think Nezha 2 did fairly well.
2. the story
but back to Nezha 1. i think it has all the elements of a good story. there are very obvious themes around "not letting your birth dictate who you are" and "fuck destiny and fate, your life is what you make it" and "prejudice is fuckin Bad" and on a smaller scale "isolating and treating a kid like an outsider is definitely going to stunt his growth and make things worse". but they felt kinda... faint? i think they couldve, shouldve leaned into them more. like be SERIOUS!! stop trying to make it a lighthearted comedy this is a really moving story :((
for example, the dragons' whole issue is they helped Heaven defeat demons and for that they get to guard the demon jail... which doubles as a jail for them too. we only get Shen Gongbao's motivation reveal later in the film which is fine (i thought his initial appearance was very funny though. yeah guy-who-looks-like-Pitch-from-RotG, im sure you are not going to be the villain later (in retrospect this is me making assumptions based on stereotypes, which is what the movie is literally arguing against, but in my defense this was the beginning of the movie when i still thought this was going to be a silly casual kids movie. i will elaborate later))
i just wish this was emphasised a little more. less for the audience and more for Nezha himself, because he doesnt know why Ao Bing is going sicko mode on Chentang Pass. he runs away before Ao Bing's dragon heritage is revealed to the village and they realise the dragons stole the Spirit Pearl, so his motivation stopping him doesnt include "bro you are NOT evil like people say you are. i would know." or "bro you did not have a say in the circumstances of your birth. i would know (2)" its just "bro stop trying to destroy my fucking home?"
i cant remember when he even realises Ao Bing is the Spirit Pearl, i dont think Shen Gongbao wouldve told him that part. like... im thinking about it... he does seem to know by the time they hold hands under the lightning, when did he find out.......
anyway. obviously the lesson can be extrapolated by the audience, but i think it wouldve hit harder if Nezha was aware (and i think the movie was still meant to be somewhat directed at kids, so i thought theyd be more overt about it...) like Nezha clearly has heard some rumours about the dragons, because he laughs at Ao Bing's horns the first time he sees him (though it feels like more of a "u look stupid" laugh than prejudice from being taught the dragons are untrustworthy) (though it could stem from the same place, just that he doesnt take it seriously.) (but he does readily accept that Ao Bing is on his side vs the yaksha)
of course you can also say "well, that actually does help get the message across better because it shows that from the start, Nezha doesnt have any preconceptions about Ao Bing('s kind)!" but idk. i think not being prejudiced is slightly different from understanding and actively choosing to go against/unlearn prejudice. mostly because its a more realistic thing for viewers to learn rather than "just never be prejudiced in the first place!"
but i guess if its a movie for kids they should be learning from Nezha's perspective? no that doesnt work because the village kids are actively hostile to Nezha... ALSO IM NOT SAYING their prejudice isnt justified. of course he hurts the villagers and theyre understandably afraid, but we are watching from Nezha's perspective and (should) know that hes acting out because no one is willing to give him a chance, which just feedbacks into a negative cycle and it really should not be on the kid to break that cycle but alright
of course of course you can also say that the unlearning prejudice part is for everyone else to learn, not Nezha himself. but he should still be aware of it, imo.
iirc what happens is Ao Bing says something along the lines of "you cant beat me without using the full power of the Demon Pill, also please stop youre gonna die anyway and i have to do this" and Nezha is like "去你妈的 shut the fuck up, i dont HAVE to do anything (WE dont HAVE to do anything), I MAKE MY OWN FATE (WE MAKE OUR OWN FATE)"
technically on Ao Bing's side he can interpret this as the correct 'lesson' ("i dont think you being a dragon means youre evil, you can make your own choices") but on Nezha's side hes going thru his crisis and learning he doesnt have to be the demon people think he is, not fully understanding Ao Bing's struggle with the expectations his father laid on him. its sadly not fully explored, which is kinda fair since Nezha is the fuckin protagonist, but their journeys are parallel and mirrored, and theyre both on the fucking poster (BOMB fucking poster to use the scene where Nezha holds his spear to Ao Bing's face btw. WHY did he have to stand so cuntily huh. not standing straight no he had to lean to one side slightly. SERVING!!!)
what the hell was i talking about? right so. Ao Bing's character arc isnt emphasised as much as Nezha's which is fair but i think it wouldve made for a better message if they did. or maybe im talking out my ass.
3. other notes
well, moving on, loved the reveal of his dad's plan to take the lightning for him, and the overall revelation that he always believed Nezha could be reformed, contrasting with his portrayal up to this point as the 'rod' to his wife's 'spoil' ("spare the rod, spoil the child"), which gave the pessimistic impression that hes harsher on Nezha because a part of him still believes he is a demon. so you find out he had faith in Nezha the whole time, he was just hard on him for his own good etc. what a typical Asian parent line honestly but i dont have a huge issue with it because that reveal was really good.
also liked the portrayal of Nezha's mom as a general alongside her husband. yes #girlboss and all but paired with her unending love for her son, it doesnt feel like a flat "strong woman who is not weak (feminine)" trope. theres something to be said about mothers in fiction but i will Elaborate on that in the Nezha 2 part of this meta, because oh boy.
its also an interesting way to ensure Nezha grows up even more isolated—a typical portrayal id expect would be his dad does the demonslaying and his mom stays at home and pampers Nezha the whole time. but that wouldnt jive with Nezha's need for validation and attention that causes him to sneak out and cause trouble for the village. (yeah at this point i was like ohhh this movie is actually about childhood neglect (half-joking))
which begs the question, what if Yin couldve spent all her time raising Nezha? if she could give him the attention he craved would he have still turned out like this? perhaps not, because the criticism Nezha receives does cause him to "live up to" the villagers' perception of him being a demon (as i said, feedback loop); so if that didnt happen we JUST WOULDNT HAVE THE STORY... which was also why it was a genius move to send Li Jing up to Heaven for a year, forcing Yin to take over the demonslaying job and not be able to spend time with Nezha.
this is really convoluted and messy i dont really have any rhyme or reason when writing this. i just felt unsatisfied with the first film; i thought if they didnt try to have so many comedic moments, and really sincerely told a story about two children fated to be 'good' and 'bad', subverting those expectations and then joining hands to truly take fate into their own hands—like, just take it seriously, man. but, whatever, it wasnt done THAT badly, i still enjoyed it.
NEZHA 2
1. the jokes + overview
ooooh boy. lets start with the comedy—VERY much toned down compared to the first movie. there are definitely still jokes, but they arent as... obnoxious? honestly im not sure how to articulate my distaste for the jokes in the first movie, might have to rewatch and analyse every one of them and why they didnt contribute to my enjoyment lol. maybe cuz its 2019 and the jokes are dated? would 2019 me have enjoyed them? unsure.
but anyway. 2 hour+ movie, absolutely GORGEOUS animation, seriously, i actually wanted to rate this 4 stars but scenes like the big fuck off tree pushed it to 4.5 stars. seriously, i usually advocate for pirating movies, but this was truly an Experience to watch in the cinemas. like it genuinely conveyed the amount of GRAND that Heaven should be. and the moment i left i heard another hall playing Nezha and was like "damn i wanna sneak in and rewatch it". i did not want the experience to end.
2. the story
so anyway, Nezha 2 definitely takes itself more seriously than the first, which i think is very good for it. it also has a LOT more going on, goddamn. from the get-go we've got Ao Bing fucking DYING AGAIN, Ao Guang giving them an ultimatum or hes blasting Chentang Pass to bits, training montage with plany off jokes, gut-wrenching Nezha's brothers scene that was preceded by Deer guy's incomprehensible targeted racism to the dragons—
(seriously, he sounds like he has a vendetta against them for no logical reason. like Doylistically its obviously just to make Nezha/Ao Bing/Taiyi uncomfortable and angry at the injustice, but Watsonianwise it just reads like he very specifically dislikes the dragons? which may make sense if they are considered a major enemy of the demon hunters, but theyre just... not. theyve literally been chilling for years (ok to be fair we dont know this for sure but it definitely comes across like that, with the way Ao Guang places his hopes and expectations on Ao Bing (as the third son) to finally save the dragons' reputation)
i guess it could make sense with his reveal of being a deer demon so maybe dragons helped defeat their kind (??? though all the demons the dragons are shown to be suppressing seem very oceany) but it really just felt so out of left field. regardless of reason, its still a strange outburst from someone who has acted quite dignified the rest of the time. does he just have a very strong grudge. thats fair, but still feels random. especially because the rest of the Immortals clearly do not think this is as serious a problem. like youd think they would be more pressed than the demon who bought into their rhetoric but okay! well i suppose thats also possible... the pick-me minority who is a stricter cop to prove theres worse ones out there and theyre the good one right haha)
which reminds me i actually did not really SEE the immortals/demons, oppressor/oppressed allusions until i read this meta. i mean like, i did, but only the oppressed side. like yeah theyre unfairly discriminated against for their birth and theyre lich rally trying so hard to get on their oppressors' good side (trying to become xian) and failing (the sect was always planning to siege their village) but i did not really SEE Heaven as active oppressors. like, as a whole. till now im still interpreting this as Wuliang specifically just being a bad egg, because the rest of the Immortals have not been shown to be anything like him, or as bad as him (granted we only meet them for a short time, but just goes to show how readily i accept that the establishment is inherently good lmfao... i suppose we'll find out in Nezha 3 if theyre all racist too :) which would fit the themes way better if they did, honestly) edit from the future: not oomf telling me its obvious i dont watch any wuxia because i did not see the Heaven=oppressors allusion 😭😭😭
btw what the fuck is the Deity War or whatever. like they keep saying that shits coming but did they ever actually explain what thats about lol. and ughhhhh i just knowwww the Jinzha Muzha shit in the 3rd movie is going to be soooo much and also why the fuck did they just drop Ao Bing having two brothers as well but theyre dead or some shit. i mean its to show that he understands Nezha's pain, but thats all we get!? like youre just gonna leave it there like is Ao Bing just Ao Guang's 3rd try at this "appeasing Heaven" plan (in which case, nice, dude, no wonder your siblings double-cross you instantly) or did they just die completely unrelatedly like bro we cannot rely on the original legend because (according to Wikipedia) Ao Bing's character is radically different from the original story (a villain) so WHO ARE THEYYYYY. but fine sure maybe theyll elaborate in the 3rd movie...
bro i cannot stay on topic to save my life where the hell was i. oh yeah i was actually planning to add one more note which was i actually cannot fucking remember the Deer and Crane's names. like i thought the subs said Deera and Crana for some reason, but i cant find anyone online talking about it lol.
um right then weve got Shen Gongbao's family which was... yeah heartbreaking honestly. really kills me that Ao Bing kept holding onto Zhengdao's hand for so long that Xiaobao, who took a WHILE to reach the scene, managed to catch him holding it. but i guess he cant really just... drop it... so i dont really blame him. its just an unfortunate coincidence all around but thatssss how we get plot rolling! i was just like ohhhh nooooo Shen Gongbao's gonna be pisseddd and Ao Guang told them to follow his orders oh nooooo
also it wasnt really clear like... why Xiaobao rushed back. iirc what happened was his dad used the rainmaking spell, and Xiaobao perceives that as a sign that something is wrong, but this isnt really explained? i think the demon hunters also get a bit !!! when that happens? and Taiyi wanted to pull Ao Bing out at that point (i might be misremembering when he has this urge lol, couldve been before Ao Bing froze the river) so it seems like a last resort move.
i suppose since his power is teleporting between electric currents in the water, making it rain could be a sign that he has to turn the battlefield in his favour, and either 1. the demon hunters think this is not something he should be able to do (as in, they want to keep him weak), or 2. its a spell that he is literally like, legally not allowed to use, but desperate times call for desperate measures. is it really desperate though. its just a xian wannabe beating his ass... well, pride is a helluva drug. OKAY no he probably did feel like he was defending his village. see up to this point i:
actually thought these were like. deadass constructed test grounds for the xian trials. obviously this isnt the case because after Ao Bing defeats the groundhog marmot (interesting, i did not know that meme was a marmot. or what a marmot even was. i was honestly losing it in the theatre and i could feel my mom sitting there impassively because she doesnt know the meme LMAO) leader they all swarm in to capture them.
so the trials arent like, designed specifically for candidates but just, "bring them along on their usual demon hunting route and let them have a go." which to be very fair, i think they did say that. but the way they all watched from afar and it looked like a goddamn set piece for a film crew really gave that vibe, so i at first really just thought "ok Nezha is just joining some class" and that was the trial lol. but no he was actually supposed to fight Shen Zhengdao.
very unfortunate and then bambambam Chentang Pass is completely obliterated, wow. tbh i was not very believing at this point i was like yeah no im sure they found some way to survive and then the yaksha appeared out of the rubble and i was like OH YOUUUU YOU ARE HERE FOR THIS EXACT REASON.
of course we later find out that Gongbao did not decide to kill the entire village over this, but that Wuliang appeared (??? for some reason i cant remember why he decided to pay a visit) and was like damn son what the hells goin on here. Ao Run mentions the Spirit Pearl and Demon Pill swap (and deadass this doesnt get elaborated upon so Wuliang's actions are not a result of knowing the switch) and Gongbao accuses him of orchestrating this attack because he knows that Nezha was supposed to do those demonhunting trials... (very sad that Xiaobao dies without knowing Nezha/Ao Bing were innocent in all this)
and Wuliang's like ohh too bad so sad anyway you guys are like one step away from destroying this place? and offers to free them in exchange for scapegoating Ao Guang as the evil dragon king who destroyed an innocent town. and theyre like lol yea sure lets do it
Gongbao making a last stand when he couldve survived with the yakshas help was also so damn touching. as this fantastic meta says, Gongbao's backstory reveal in this movie really reframes him from a villain to someone more sympathetic, who isnt just powerhungry but also a filial son and brother (and we Chinese love our filial piety dont we). and now that his family is dead there isnt a point in trying to ascend to godhood, so he throws himself into a frankly doomed and already-finished battle.
and then we later find out he survived; maybe Wuliang foresaw using him (since he wouldve presumably already have kept Zhengdao alive by that point. oh did he go find Gongbao specifically to use his fathers death over him?!) and saved him or at least mustve whisked his body away. excellent excellent. moving on
so Nezha goes ballistic unable to find his parents and heads off to finish the third trial and become xian. gets the elixir to revive the lotus (which... okay... i cant not say it... it looks like... milk :) right... just milk... hahaha.......) and shoots off to go fuck up Ao Guang. Ao Bing wants to stop him but Taiyi is like you cant do ANYTHING until you have a body anyway so please sit your ass down.
then by this point Wuliang has gotten ready to start cookin (demons and dragons into immortality pills) and Nezha and Ao Guang are pingponging off each other until Taiyi, his parents, and Ao Bing arrive, redirecting Nezha and Ao Guang's hostility to Wuliang. then the epic Nezha/Ao Bing vs the three dragon kings battle kicks off (of whom Ao Run is truly the only formidable one seriously theyre all like "oooh Ao Run has this SPECIAL CLAW that can create rifts in space" what the fuck do the other dragons have??? absolute fuck all!!). ngl im not sure they would be more powerful as human(oid)s than dragons but we wouldnt get an epic fight sequence otherwise, so, fair enough.
the part where Ao Bing and i dont remember which dragon king, the thin one, their weapons are glued together by Ao Bing's bing and they have to fuckin juggle Nezha's spear was quite cool though i really do think they couldve had an easier time just breaking the ice and fighting normally. but yes kings show off your footwork! (and it is more visually interesting, i admit)
and i was so expecting a scene where Ao Run redirects one of their attacks into each other. thank you Homestuck for making that teleportation/rift-in-space tactic live in my head rent free. honestly she... probably couldve solo'd them like she just has to send them to the bottom of the lava pit or something LOL. but yes that wouldnt be very fun...
oh and this whole time Nezha's parents, Tianyi, and Ao Guang are fighting the Deer and Crane demons (i wont lie i thought Crane's power reveal was super awesome), until finally they all get stuffed into the big OMMMMMMMMM cauldron (dgmw it was an epic sound effect. but once it plays more than three times, it starts to lose its lustre...) oh and Wuliang literally sticks pins and needles into Nezha and Ao Bing's bodies which was pretty fucking horrifying. but also, visually, kind of funny that theyre stuck A-posing for a while. i mean i know theyre in excruciating pain, sorry guys, sorry.
honestly when they got fucking thrown in i really thought they could solve shit by just. picking them up and bringing them together so they could utilise the energy/power-absorption abilities of the Chaos Pearl, but uh i guess no one thought about that! despite the fact that thats literally the whole reason they split apart the Spirit Pearl and Demon Pill in the first place cuz it was tooo powerful! (i mean they do it later but maybe we couldve *sniff* done it a little quicker *sniff* and prevented Yin's death)
ugh the whole scene with Nezha and his mom was heartrending. the hug in the beginning not being returned so she hugs him now, when its going to pierce her so horribly, her being the first to believe in him ever since his birth (dont forget she had to carry a fetus for THREE WHOLE YEARS BTW), just being a Loving Mother in general... then Wuliang offers Nezha the Oblivion Pill in exchange for letting his parents live (okay so in retrospect this is a pill that erases memories and presumably Wuliang would employ him as a servant afterwards? but while watching i had no idea what it was supposed to be lmfao. i was just like okay. it has the colours of the Chaos Pearl. what does that mean.)
but Yin knocks it away, Nezha and his parents have a breakdown over not wanting the other to die for them and then his mom deadass just FUCKING TURNS INTO A PILL. i cannot believe thats how the pill formation works but it is comically horrible. eat it and your mom will be with you forever, Nezha!
so that was really sad, but i could not help but think ahhhhhh the "mom sacrificing themselves/dying for their children" trope strikes again! and a woman dying for a man's character advancement! like it was incredibly incredibly sad and i cried, but i was still keenly aware of that in my head lol, as someone who has read a bunch of Lily Evans meta recently...
like i know it can be WAY more gut-wrenching to have the mom die. its a trope for a reason. but they already subverted things with her being a general, couldnt they have had the dad die maybe... it couldve made for an interesting Nezha/mom Ao Bing/dad parallel afterwards but okayyy fine. side note this film does not pass the Bechdel test, does it. which is not a real test it was just a joke between two lesbians but well... we can see the lack of women here.
Nezha's body being perfected by the fires of Samadhi was cool as fuck though. especially since they literally hinted it not two minutes ago with "hes the only one who wont burn in here" lol. bishounen Nezha woohoo!!! grabs Ao Bing's hand and everyone pushes the cauldron open a la Finding Nemo fish net scene.
and—i mentioned this at the start but the fucking TREE thing, with the demon hunter legion forming the golden leaves of the tree, was fucking beautiful. really shows off the scale of things. then the cauldron breaks and they have the big fight in the air, Oubing go beat the shit out of Wuliang and do their handholding energy absorption inside his tree prison thing (nice going dude, maybe instead of crushing them together you should have held them separately?)
Wuliang admits defeat and leaves, and i immediately thought "oh my god we are getting a 3rd movie. or are they gonna wrap things up real quick i cant tell if its been 2 hours already" and then. oh my goddd. the final scene, Ao Bing leaving and Ao Guang telling him he can go back if he wants and they hug ARHGHGHGGHHH. and he comes back to Nezha (edit: AFTER NEARLY THE WHOLE DAY HAS PASSED BTW, someone pointed out the sun is in the sky when he leaves and is setting when he comes back. Nezha really waited there for hoursss 😭) and Nezha says his "because we're still young" YES! YES!! flipping a phrase that is usually used in a "youre so young of course you dont realise that life is cruel and thats just how it is" and turning it into YEAH SO WHAT??? we're young and not yet beaten down by the hardships of life. why does it have to be so cruel? why cant we make things BETTER? YEAHHH!!!!!!
also the ink painting credits was pretty until they DELIBERATELY put the Nezha/Yin hug back-to-back with the Ao Bing/Ao Guang hug like OKAY JUST FUCKING KILL ME WHY DONT YOU??????
and the post-credits (its really funny that they made drawings to specifically remind you to stay for post-credits. why the hell were people getting up to leave during the credits BRO THEY SAID THERES POST-CREDITS?????) with Wuliang getting trapped in the prison was really fucking funny. face recognition joke just like Nezha 1's fingerprint authentication joke (i do like it when fantasy media includes references to modern technology. like yeah, some of this stuff would sound magical to someone from that age?) and Deer and Crane beating the fuck outta him was the funniest thing in the whole movie to me. though on a deeper note i wonder how Deer and Crane really feel about Wuliang. it could just be for laffs... it could also show that they do have some compunctions about their roles...
PERSONAL NOTES
tbh didnt know what to name this section the entire meta/review is my opinion after all. anyway this part is just about how i came to know/watch the films.
i remember when Nezha 1 came out in 2019. there was another Nezha movie that came out alongside it, which i only remembered as Nezha: somethingsomethingsomething (it's New Gods: Nezha Reborn lol) and i remembered hearing that one of the Nezhas was really good and one kinda meh. but i had no idea which was which. so i just shelved it for the future.
then bam. Nezha 2 out. is it that good? whatever. i still dont know which was the good one. its the fucking ALL TIME BESTSELLING ANIMATED MOVIE????? goddamn! my parents started talking about watching it. we checked Netflix, they had a Nezha film but my dad said it was the wrong one.
skimmed over some clips and pics of Nezha 1 and i literally only saw clips of kid Nezha (which makes sense, he is a kid for 80% of the movie), and mostly gag clips so i thought oh its a kids movie or something? and i did not have high hopes for Chinese animated kids movies after Little Door Gods disappointed me so hard.
my parents were still asking to watch it. i was still putting it off by saying "well we have to watch the first one so we have to figure out where to pirate or stream it." then i saw some fanart online of Ao Run and i was—i was like theres girls in this film? theres characters that arent the little kid??? incredible because that person actually drew Ao Bing right there and i did not give him a second glance. but now i love him lol.
and then we watched Nezha 1 on some Chinese streaming service that would play ads, like, every 5 minutes. granted, the 'basic' premium we paid for allowed us to SKIP the ads, but they would still play like fucking youtube ads. fucking insufferable, i hate capitalism. anyway i was like ohhh!! because Ao Bing was really cool, and i was like "no one told me theres a PRETTY BOY in this film???"
then Nezha also turned into a pretty boy. i was like DAWG OKAY WHAT???? (ironically i wouldve known this or expected it if id bothered to look up the poster which just has him. right there. but instead i got entirely jumpscared)
then he turns back to a kid at the end. okay. THEN IN NEZHA 2 HE TURNS INTO HIS BISHOUNEN FORM AGAIN, SLAY, AND DOESNT CHANGE BACK. therefore i would like to say this represents the movie moving past the 'kids comedy' genre and onto more serious pastures and the 3rd movie will probably have even less jokes. just kidding they probably will have the same amount of jokes as the 2nd, it was an alright balance.
also. i dont actually know a lot of Chinese mythology, like, ive never read the books or legends or anything. so when Nezha got his ribbon, and the gold bangle(?) goes onto his wrist, i did not recognise it from knowing my own culture. i recognised it from a dont starve together mod i played ages ago.
my final note is: im honestly scared for Nezha to get popular in English-speaking spaces, because Oubing, and i just know some dense mfs are gonna be like "HES A KID???" (i mean ive already seen some Tiktok caption going like "ummm they have a BROTHERLY relationship akshually" like girl 1. most people are shipping their bishounen selves 2. theyre both three fucking years old 3. just close your eyes
thank you for coming to my ted talk.

A Loong History Lesson 3
This is a post that has Key information for my Snapshots and Tea Collection series and also for information important to the backstory for The Spider Web Story.
It also contains some HEAD CANNONS. Please take note they are headcanons not Original to the Book JTTW or considered Cannon to the Lego Monkie Kid fandom while reading.
Thank you!
A recap, for my stories there are five main Dragons, a father and four sons.
Qinglong - The Azure Dragon - Central - Multiple Elements. Ao Shun - Black Dragons - North - Ice Element. Ao Qin - Red/Yellow Dragons - South - Air/Wind Element. Ao Guang - White Dragons - East - Water Element. Ao Ji - Green Dragons - West - Fire Element.
Due to his attempt to rebel and later his attempt to ruin the good will between Heaven and his brothers and son, Ao Guang is now slumbering within a crystalline egg. His youngest son, Ao Bing rules the Eastern Dragon Clan in his father’s stead.
Ao Lie is the son of Ao Ji, and is currently on a journey with the pilgrims to the West.
After being rescued from the Brotherhood and Wukong’s return to the Pilgrims, Ao Lie notes Wukong’s behaviour is different. He does not attack demons on sight anymore, but this leads to more frequent kidnappings and problems, as proven when they pass into the Silken Hollow and instead of warning them of the danger, Wukong lets them get caught and deals with the matter himself by waiting for nightfall. When the Spider Queen Mother dismisses her daughters for the evening and also retires to her bed chamber, Wukong cuts himself free, then frees the Monk, Bajie, Wujing and Ao Lie and then spending a week playing a long game of cat and mouse with the Spider Queen and her daughters until the Pilgrims escaped the Hollow and left the Spiders behind.
This leads to a heated discussion between the Monk, Wukong and Ao Lie, (read, The Monk and Wukong are the ones discussing things while Ao Lie makes sure they don’t get out of hand while Bajie and Wujing keep their mouths shut and stay out of it). There is no resolution to the matter as they are found and attacked by The Lady Bone Demon for a second time and Wukong is badly injured while he shields Bajie and the Monk from an attempt at possession. They only escape because Ao Lie takes on the Bone Demon himself to give Bajie and Wujing time to get Wukong and the Monk away. After this fight, because of how much power and energy Ao Lie used to force the Bone Demon to flee, his hair has turned from black to white.
During the time Wukong is healing from the attempted possession, the pilgrims learn of the destruction of Silken Hollow and shortly thereafter, Bajie asks why Wukong saved them when he knew that with the Monk’s death, he would be free and Bajie had only ever hurt him.
This is when Ao Lie and the Monk learn what happened to Wukong during his banishment and that it was the Merciful Guanyin who, after Bajie and Wujing had told the story of how Ao Lie and the Monk had been taken by the Brotherhood, had given Wukong her promise that no harm would befall them from Heaven’s hands if Wukong sealed the Brotherhood within a Memory Scroll.
When again asked why he saved Bajie, Ao Lie reminds them that Wukong is a Monkey and the oldest of the group. Monkey troops survive because they protect every member, even if they don’t get along.
(There is more that happens, but that is in the Jttw History to avoid spoilers.)
After the End of their Journey, Ao Lie returned and lived his life for a time traveling between the Eastern and Western Palaces, helping Ao Bing in his duties and maintaining a peaceful life, knowing his fellow pilgrims are still in good health and good spirits thanks to regular letters from them all, as well as the little basket of fruits, biscuits and cakes that turns up every year with a little peach-shaped card.
Until one day, the Monk, Bajie, Wujing and Ao Lie are called upon by the Third Lotus Prince Nezha, in hopes that they can assist in his efforts to help an infant who had been born with something beyond his control. The son of the Demon Bull King had been born with the Samadhi Fire ablaze within him, and after only a brief week of living, the fire had sprung forth and burned continually for the last several months, and though it was his birthright, the baby could not control the blaze and was in a state of constant pain.
Worse, the child was too young to cry or scream, and so instead the sound that came from the child was a choked, haunting laughter, even in times when extortion won out and the flames calmed ever so slightly, the child continued to laugh and cackle with the pain of the fire. After a lot of talking and explaining the matter, Ao Lie contented his Uncle, Ao Qin and with his help, drew up a ritual formula to remove the Samadhi Fire from the babe and form it into three rings.
The problem arose when Ao Lie explained that the ritual required those who had incredible chi and will, and while he was a dragon of fire, this flame was hot enough and powerful enough to hurt even him, and so he was unsuited to try and tame it. They would need someone else to help.
He suggested Wukong, and with some reluctance, the Demon Bull King agreed to it.
Wukong arrived timely, looking over the ritual, the babe and the Demon Bull King he had once called a brother and asked only where they needed him to stand and what he needed to do to help the child.
The ritual to remove the Samadhi Fire from the baby Bull Prince is long and hard, to the point that Bajie and Wujing are drained of their own chi to the point of exhortation very quickly, and thus, Ao Lie had taken over as guard to the Monk while Wukong, Nezha and the Demon Bull King focus on forming the three rings that will house the Samadi Fire. When Wukong is smacked down by a wayward burst of fire from the child who knows only how to laugh as the fire burns around him, Ao Lie sees the stray flame coming at the Monk and redirects some of his own chi to create a fourth, smaller ring within himself.
By the time the ring was formed, Wukong was back up, though he only made it to his knees before forcing the ring he had been focusing on to take more of the fire and allow Ao Lie, Nezha and the Demon Bull King to also push their own rings to form faster.
With the rings fully formed, Wukong stood up and dusted himself off, saying that was fun. Resulting in Nezha scolding the Monkey for a good five minutes before the Monk could ask if the child is safe, and the three parties part ways amicably.
For a few months, Ao Lie was able to hide the pain the ring inside him was causing him, until one day he lost focus while out on a walk with Ao Bing and collapsed into a shallow river, only for that river to dry up entirely.
When Ao Lie woke, he and Ao Bing were at Flower and Fruit Mountain, the little monkeys hurrying back and forth with cold buckets of water and ice to help cool Ao Lie while Wukong, Ao Bing and Ao Ming worked on creating numbing pills.
The Fourth Ring of Samadhi Fire could not be removed from Ao Lie’s body, as it was tied to his very chi. Removing it would forever leave Ao Lie weakened or possibly kill him. For many years, Ao Lie lived a calm life, helping Ao Bing and his sister Ao Ming ruling the West and East Seas, taking a mate later in life and siring three sons and a daughter, living happily, until one day, Ao Lie seemed to simply vanish.
No one has seen or heard from Ao Lie in many years.
