AHHH... the fact that sam actually reads the journal instead of just burning it, just to be really thorough, and discovers it's the painting that needs to be burned instead via the context clues... so he doesn't have to burn the firsthand account journal from a woman in 1520s florence... or the rest of her belongings... this makes my museum work oriented brain (and heart) extremely happy.

“ What if I told you that I didn’t want to die yet, and that I wasn’t ready? (...) The life I live, the work I do...I very much just figured that that was all there was to me, y’know? (...) I guess I just thought that sooner or later I’d go out the same way that I lived. Pedal to the metal and that would be it. (...) There’s... people, feelings, that I want to experience differently than I have before. Or maybe even for the first time.” - Dean Winchester 10.16
Dean, with the MoC, after his death in 9.23 was confessing in this scene. At first it was for a case, but after being asked, Dean started revealing personal thoughts.
Above, he goes on and on about how the life that he lives always made him assume that he would die. Most likely on a hunt. Most likely bloody. But then he says that he doesn’t really want to. He doesn’t want to actually die that way. He doesn’t want to die that soon (”Now, recent events made me think I’d be closer than that [dying] than I ever thought” a line from the same scene) he wants to live. To experience new things or reexperience certain things. He’s not ready to die. It’s also important to note that this was the first time that season or in a while that Dean actually said that, and the viewers actually learned it. Which means, although Dean had been thinking that for a while, the average viewer wouldn’t have really known, or remembered. Why? Because most times in the show, Dean feels like it’s pointless to think that or voice it. That there’s no point in thinking that way or holding out hope for that. Because it’s not possible. It’s not something that could actually happen. When he talks about how dying on a hunt is his perfect ending or it’s how he wants to go, it’s usually coming from a place of hopelessness. Why should I hope to actually live, when that doesn’t seem possible? Better to accept that I’ll just die on a hunt, and make peace with that. BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT HE ACTUALLY WANTS DEEP INSIDE. That’s what he tries to convince himself and others that he wants. It doesn’t make it true. It doesn’t change the fact that it’s coming from a place of suffering, pain, and hopelessness. No, dying at a young age or on a hunt was not his perfect ending. It was not what he wanted. Dean Winchester wanted to live. Dean Winchester deserved to live.
(Don’t turn that “people...feelings” quote about Destiel!!!!)

War flashback #927292018292927281901 (at least that's what it feels like to me)
He said he wants to experience love for the first time...in a different way than before.... he confessed it to Father Delaney.... something he never does.
Also..... since when is loving someone a sin? It is when Christianity made being gay look like a sin (even though it's not a sin... it's more like a blessing tbh [I am gray... but I can see how happy people are when they realize they are gay and free to express themselves without being judged by their environment]).
Which means that Dean is concerned about being bi... aka he was internalizing biphobia so much that he had to confess it.
And he looked like he got rid of a heavy burden in his heart... and after this confession he was much more open towards Cas.
Coincidence? I think not.

You ever started a post about Nick and Lucifer and the post escaped your control and went into the Destiel direction? Well, I guess it happens sometimes. Here’s the post. Give it a try.
It makes sense that the reason Nick is able to wake up Lucifer from the Empty is that the two of them acquired Jack’s grace. Jack is already one of a kind because while various nephilim have existed, he has been sired by an archangel instead of a regular angel. An archangel powered up with his own nephilim’s grace is a situation that has never happened before. Archangel with arch-nephilim’s grace, so to speak.
It’s not a plot hole that things that have never occurred before now are occurring around Lucifer. It’s not even really extreme mental acrobatics. From the moment Lucifer ingests Jack’s grace (thus Nick becomes a vessel for that), it’s new territory. It’s a situation we haven’t seen in the story before, because it has never happened before. It can’t contradict ‘past canon’ because there’s no past canon on that specific situation. Of course, it has to be within reasonableness in some extent but I don’t think that what we’ve seen are outside reasonableness. Nick surviving, Nick being able to connect with Lucifer in the Empty - are those really absurd occurrences for a being that has acquired the grace of the most powerful being that’s existed in creation, a being that has connected with an angel in the Empty before?
I don’t know if the show will make this explicit, maybe it’ll be revealed that it’s something else entirely and you can throw tomatoes at me, but with the puzzle pieces we have right now, why wouldn’t this not be the case? The storyline around Jack is all about his grace - well, lack thereof - so Jack’s grace is still the elephant in the room. The ‘then’ segment reminds us of Lucifer stealing it (“I need your power”)... Heck, the Michael plot is about his grace, used to power up monsters. It’s all about the grace, you know?
And it’s all about new things. We’re reminded again that Jack was supposed to be ‘special’ because he was one of a kind. Michael tells Kaia that they both bleed new energy, as they come from other worlds. Archangels have never made plans with monsters before, and the powered-up monsters have new powers they have never had before. There are many things that are being experienced for the first time.
(Buckner and Ross-Leming also wrote this:
What if I said I... I didn’t want to die... yet, you know, that I wasn’t ready? Are you expecting to? Always. You know, the life I live, the work I do... I pretty much just figured that that was all there was to me, you know? Tear around and jam the key in the ignition and haul ass until I ran out of gas. I guess I just thought sooner or later, I’d go out the same way that I live – pedal to the metal, and that would be it. But now? Now, um... recent events, uh... make me think I might be closer to that than I really thought. And... I don’t know. I mean, you know, there’s – there’s things, there’s... people, feelings that I... I want to experience differently than I have before, or maybe even for the first time.
I’ll just leave this here.)
I might be wrong, but I think that there is a pattern of things that have not happened before, that are happening for the first time. Beings who have acquired powers they never had before. Experiences that are being done for the first time (including Jack’s “non special” activities he wants to try before he dies). Hunters who are doing things for the first time, like Maggie on her ‘first solo hunt’.
And of course, Jody reminds us that Kaia was Claire’s “first love”. Vince was Harper’s first love and that’s what made it special (“It’s first love, Jack. The best kind. Without baggage or compromise”). Can’t be a coincidence.
It seems that everything just brings us back to the things, people and feelings that Dean wanted to experience for the first time, and for which he needed to ~go deeper than with Gina~, you know? (While calling himself Agent Allman. 10x16 was a fucking gem.) “Before my life is over, I want to live it” says Jack. He thought that being the super special nephilim was “all there was” to him, but recent events makes him think that he’s closer to dying than he thought, and he wants to experience getting a tan or a parking ticket for the first time. Experience things and feelings like spending quality time with his dad.
Not a coincidence that Dean suggests going to the bar to find a hookup (Gina) but Jack picks father-son quality time instead (going deeper than random fleeting connections with the inevitable adiós afterwards).
Oh boi. I intended this to be a ‘don’t call plot hole if it doesn’t have to be’ and turned into... this. I love when 10x16 just bursts into a post. Burn the tethers to the toxic relationships that keep you chained to unhealthy mechanisms!

Disappointed SPN fans: Can I just say something real quick? Maybe I have no rights in the supernatural fandom, because I’m just one of those randoms who hadn’t seen the show and thought that Destiel shippers were reading into nothing, but then watched that “Destiel being boyfriends for twenty minutes” video on YouTube and saw Castiel’s confession and got super invested in those final days, but also started to care more about the whole cast of characters right before that finale BUT: I have to say I’ve been seeing the memes about how the writers of Supernatural copied and pasted The Vampire Diaries finale and I must say, (not that I think they literally took that ending) there was a blueprint for how they could end in the form of TWO other CW shows: Beauty and the Beast and Nikita. (Spoilers for those shows obviously) Basically, both shows conclude with one set of people living a “normal” life for lack of a better word, and another set, who can’t let go of fighting for justice in their specific way, “retire” and basically go to part-time. Which is honestly just realistic and makes sense allegorically in that one should never stop fighting for justice. (And with our fucked economy and social systems, many people don’t fully retire at first, so that’s reality baby.) But yeah, if you’ve seen Beauty and the Beast, Cat and Vincent basically move to France to live out their days under assumed identities after fighting to save the world and themselves (they got into WAY too much trouble with the law, sound like anyone we know?) and their siblings (two of them just really close friends who are like siblings, one biological half-sister) come visit them. Last scene: They’re all chilling in a cafe and Cat and Vincent are supposed to be just laying low, but they see someone being robbed and they chase after the robber to stop him, showing that that they’ll still keep fighting for what’s right. And if you’ve seen Nikita you’ll know that the last scene is Michael and Nikita, former spies, relaxing on a beach having gotten married, but then they see an injustice happening and run off to fight it. This is while Alex (who has a sisterly bond with Nikita, which is a cornerstone of the show, hint FUCKING hint) goes on to work with United Nations in order to fight for justice that way. In both cases, it’s not exactly the same as it was, the protagonists aren’t fighting these massive conspiracies or superhuman monsters, but they still have to try to keep balance. And it just ends like that. And yes, it’s open ended, but it honestly fits the characters and I’ll take open-ended half-closure over whatever the fuck the Supernatural finale was ANY DAY 😤. One of my final thoughts on this comes from Craig Silverstein, Nikita creator on why it was important to him to have a happy ending: “For me it was important… if it was earned. I don’t have a real desire to see someone come to a bad ending. I’m never quite sure what the point of that is in something that is essentially entertainment, where everyone is striving hard to find that happy ending — is it for surprise value? [Laughs] For that one moment it’s great, but then it leaves a bad taste in your mouth, and I’m not sure what the value of that is.” And for any clowns who want to say that what happened was Dean’s happy ending and use season 8 or older stuff to corroborate that, I won’t bring up the 10x16 confession scene, or the many clues in the finale that he wanted to live. (He was LITERALLY eating pie, a representation for having a more settled, though not necessarily “normal” life. Or the job application. Or him saying his friends sacrifices were only worth if both HE and Sam lived. Or how terrified he was when he was dying.) Oh wait oops. Well, I was just planning to mention 13x23 where he talks about how he would retire if he knew the world was safe and mentions him, Sam AND CAS being on some beach together and emphasizes that he’s serious because they earned it. Anyway, I’ll see myself out. Best wishes to any who are struggling. Check out the charities SPN fans are donating to.
