Characters
This chapter will be dedicated to all those characters who accompanied us on our adventure for the pure hearts, so I hope you like it :)
Queen Jaydes, Grambi y Luvbi
Queen Jaydes is the kind-hearted (but strict) queen of Underwhere. As ruler of The Underwhere, she possesses power over life and death. Queen Jaydes is named hence the god of the underworld in Greek mythology, Hades, as well as "upset," meaning "unenthusiastic" or "bored" (both qualities she possesses). Fun fact: she bears a certain resemblance to the Queen of Shadows.
Following Dimentio's defeat, Jaydes travels to The Overthere upon learning that Luvbi has returned to life. There, she promises to give Luvbi all the love she can and encourages the heroes to visit her to judge her when they finish her games, as thanks for her hard work.
Gambi
His name is a portmanteau of "grandfather" and "Nimbi."
Just as Jaydes is based on Hades, the ancient Greek lord of the underworld, Gambi may be based on Zeus, the sky god and ruler of Mount Olympus in Greek mythology. Additionally, as The Overthere also borrows from Christian theism, certain aspects of Gambi are shared with God, such as his position as head of the angelic Nimbis and his conflict with Bonechill (whose story closely resembles that of Lucifer). However, Grambi is not credited with creating the world or life and is neither omniscient nor omnipotent.
Luvbi
Her name is a combination of the words "love" and "Nimbi." After Bonechill's defeat, Luvbi assumes his true form to save all the worlds. After saving all the worlds, Luvbi recreates herself as a true Nimbi girl independent of the white Pure Heart. (A/N: I have a theory that explains how, so check out the Pure Hearts chapter ;))
Fun Fact: Luvbi plays a similar role to TEC-XX from the previous game, in that they both make a sacrifice to help Mario and his friends at the end of Chapter 7, only to be inexplicably revived upon Mario's defeat the final boss.
Kalamarx
After the heroes defeat Mr. L in the heart of the Whoa Zone, Squirps reveals to them that he is the prince of a forgotten kingdom, Squirpia, and that his mother, Squirpina XIV, was entrusted with the Pure Heart by the Ancients. She then placed Squirps in a hibernation capsule for 1,500 years, so that he could lead the heroes to the Whoa Zone when they arrived in Outer Space. After relaying his mother's message to them asking them to save all worlds, the prince hands over the Blue Pure Heart. The post-chapter narration reads that, his quest finally done, Squirps lay down near the statue of his mother and closed his eyes to rest. He was presumed dead by the heroes; however, returning to Outer Space at any time afterward reveals that he had only fallen asleep, and the player can replay the chapter as normal.
After beating the game, the heroes can find Squirps in the Whoa Zone near his mother's statue, assuring her of the world's safety and that he would restore Squirpia someday.
Tipptron, with her tattle says: His full name is Squirp Korogaline Squirpina. It seems he is actually the prince of a space kingdom... He dreams of ascending the throne someday. I'm sure he has what it takes...
Some fun facts: Squirps' reaction to being fed a chocolate bar can be seen as a callback to Gourmet Guy from the original Paper Mario, who acted similarly when fed Cake and also impeded Mario's progress in Chapter 4 of that game.
He is also somewhat similar to Flavio, as both claim themselves to be gourmets and are initially hesitant to accept the edibles Mario brings them.
Excluding enemies, Squirps is the only character in the game who flips into 3D as the player does; this is the case even when they visit him in the Whoa Zone.
Squirps is the second character in the Paper Mario series to fall asleep and be mistaken for dead by Mario and co., with Admiral Bobbery being the first.

The glorious diamonds!
+ Mario for scale
Jaydes the Magenta Diamond. Her gem is on her forehead, and she possesses the power to corrupt gems- although she only uses this power as punishment on dangerous and evil gems. She resides in an underground colony on an old gloomy planet. Her court consists of gems that hunt down criminal gems that disturb the peace of the universe.
Grambi the Iridescent Diamond. His gem is on his chest, hidden behind his beard. He possesses the power to heal any cracks or scratches a gem may have. He resides in large space stations that drifts in space. His court consists of gems who serve as observers, watching over planets to make sure all is well.
Luvbi the Peach Diamond. Her gem is on her stomach, and she possesses the power to heal corrupted gems- or at least she will once she learns to use her powers. She resides on both of the other’s colonies, visiting each frequently. She doesn’t have her own colony or court yet.
Closeups
Essentially they never had a reason to undo corruptions, since it was reserved for ‘criminal’ gems, until the Chaos Heart appeared and started to corrupt innocent gems. To combat this, they created a new diamond who would have the ability to heal these gems. However she is still young and hasn’t yet mastered her power.

Now that more people have played TTYD, I wanted to compare and contrast a few things between that game and Super Paper Mario. In particular, this post will focus on...
PARTNERS AND SIDE CHARACTERS!
The Thousand-Year Door really shines with its partners and side characters, in part because every chapter allows one of these side characters to be a protagonist. This also ties into the "each chapter has its own subplot" idea that SPM lacks, at least in the beginning.
! SPOILERS FOR THE THOUSAND YEAR DOOR !
(and minor spoilers for Super Paper Mario)
Chapter 1 allows Koops to have a mini-arc where he’s avenging his father. Even though his father turns out to be alive, this adventure to defeat Hooktail marks an important development in his character that leads him to continue traveling with Mario. In SPM, while the first chapter does drop a few key pieces of information on the Ancients, there's not really a clear subplot or side character to follow.
Chapter 2 starts out with Punio and his desire to rescue his sister, and branches out (heheh) into the Punies trying to defend their home. Meanwhile in SPM, there's a bit of a sub-plot with Mimi and Merlee that places them both in the spotlight, but that's mostly it. If the chapter had given a little more attention to the other prisoners of Mimi's debt scheme, then maybe it could've come close to establishing the environment in the same manner as TTYD.
Chapter 3 kind of puts the entire cast of the Glitz Pit in the limelight, since you don’t really know who’s who until nearing the end. I can’t really argue that it makes Jolene the protagonist because that reveal comes only once the chapter ends--but after you realize Jolene's role in the mystery of the Glitz Pit, it becomes clear that she is a key protagonist in chapter 3, and the revival of Prince Mush serves as the completion of her arc. Again, chapter 3 of SPM could've pulled this off by giving characters like Carrie some more involvement in defeating Francis; after all, she was a victim of his weirdness too, right?
After playing the first three chapters of TTYD, you begin to feel more invested in the plot of the game. However, the first three chapters of SPM are weaker in terms of establishing interest, which is largely why many people who first played the game didn't stick with it past this point. However, around chapter four, the tides begin to turn!
Chapter 4 of TTYD follows the people of Twilight Town, as you are immediately introduced to the plight of their pig curse. However, after the first battle with Doopliss, the chapter places Vivian in the spotlight. Vivian becomes the protagonist in this chapter as she finally learns to overcome her fear of her sisters and fight for what she believes in. Chapter 4 of SPM actually has Squirps as a side-protagonist, so it comes pretty close to matching TTYD's pattern here.
Chapter 5 puts Flavio in the spotlight. He is...quite the personality! He's a flamboyant, arrogant coward who's given a Brave Moment during the climax of the chapter. In SPM, we have the conflict of the Cragnons and Floro Sapiens in the forefront of the chapter, which helps better establish the world of chapter 5.
Chapter 6, being all about solving mysteries, puts your partnership with Pennington in the spotlight, thus making The Penguin With the Improbably Large Brain a protagonist of the chapter. In SPM, chapter 6 focuses on the Sammer Guys as their world is on the verge of erasure.
Chapter 7 puts the main plot of the Thousand-Year Door back in focus, so there's not much of a sub-plot. However, you could still argue that TEC is made into a protagonist for this chapter, given his act of sacrifice at the end. And of course, Super Paper Mario has Luvbi as a protagonist, and her arc with Jaydes and Grambi as a sub-plot of sorts.
In chapter 8 for both games, all the strings tie together and the focus is placed primarily on the climax and conclusion of the main plot! For SPM, this includes focuses on each villain in turn (O'Chunks, then Mimi, then Dimentio, then Count Bleck and, to a lesser extent, Nastasia).
Because TTYD's writing allows you to be close with all of the partners and side characters you meet, parting with them at the end feels like a real goodbye. Even though you know you can just reload your save file, you still have the sense that you'll miss these people and this world you've gotten to know so well.
Despite all my love for the game, I do have mixed feelings on how effectively SPM pulls this off. I think they definitely give enough attention to the game's main cast to make the players curious about them after completing the main story, but I don't feel that this sense carries over to all of the side characters and worlds from throughout the game. I'm still fond of the characters in Super Paper Mario, of course, but it's not in the same "I feel I experienced something with them" kind of way that the Thousand-Year Door does so well.
TL;DR - Each chapter in The Thousand-Year Door gives some side character a chance to serve as that chapter’s protagonist, which helps better establish the characters and worlds in that game. However, Super Paper Mario does not do this to the same extent, especially in the earlier chapters, which I believe is part of the reason many people found SPM less engaging than TTYD when it first released.

I see you have fallen for my trap…
@scribeprotra
Genuinely though, I'm still at a somewhat loose framework.
The whole topic came about because one of the tracks in one of the newer Mario Kart games. (I think it was Dragon Driftway in Mario Kart 8?) I was trying to rationalize why a structure like this would exist, and settled on this thought.
It would make a lot of sense if Koopas worshipped dragons in this world, especially since we have seen them exist in at least two games. (First Paper Mario and Super Paper Mario) Plus, given that Bowser himself and the Koopalings have dragon-like traits, and that in our own history, we've regarded monarchs as divinely chosen or directly enacting a god's will on earth.
Add in an idea that Koopas like Bowser and the Koopalings are nobles and royalty because they have closer proximity to dragons, which are their gods. Daimao Koopas are essentially regarded as demigods amongst the Darklands for this reason.
So at least ONE dragon would be regarded as a god or an extension of the divine, but it stands to reason the others, like Hooktail, Gloomtail, Bonetail, Fracktail, and Wracktail, are divine in their own right. Wracktail even calls themself a god when you encounter them in the Pit of 100 Trials in SPM.
But clearly dragons are not the only powerful entities, since we have the star spirits as well as the Fire God and Thunder God in Superstar Saga, as well as figures like Grambi and Jaydes from SPM.
So there would likely be a whole pantheon's worth of potential divinity that rule over the Mushroom World. Despite the easy choice, I hesitate to make Grambi and Jaydes rule over life and death respectively. Grambi doesn't rule over life. He merely guards the Overthere. Jaydes is not a goddess of death. She is the goddess of the dead, in much the same way that Hades from Greek Mythology rules over the domain of the underworld and the dead, but is not the actual god of death.
I'd sooner place them as representations that I'd want to extend to Mario and Luigi. Grambi represents the Day. Honor and courage, heroism, idealism, the spotlight of popularity and attention. The light of day and all that happens in it. The physical and tangible. Due to the role Mario plays, you could consider him as being the Star Child Grambi chose to represent his domain amongst the living, and Star Children can be the chosen ones of the stars.
Jaydes, on the other hand, would represent the Night. Secrecy and mystery, underhanded tactics. The shadow that the day and the sun has cast. The cover of darkness and all that can be hidden in it. The supernatural and the metaphysical. Luigi, especially in the way I characterize him, would be Jaydes' chosen Star Child.
Night and Day are established, but that still leaves life and death as foundational forces that do not have a representative. There may not be a true death god, but there would certainly be entities that serve the same purpose. Currently, I'm placing Bonechill as one of those potential entities. He represents the withering and decay, the cold and dark. If Life's gift is a heartbeat, then Death's gift is breath, because as soon as you have air in your lungs, it is something that can be taken from you. And if I recall, Bonechill has an icy breath weapon.
So Bonechill is probably not a true death god, but he represents the worst possible deaths and suffering, and is one of the closest things they'd get to Evil in their deities.
Which still leaves the question of what represents Life. If the Stars are the power of the universe, the cosmos, of reality itself in the way it can grant wishes, Grambi and Jaydes are Day and Night, and Bonechill is an Evil that probably became a euphemism for death and suffering, then what is left?
I think a significant source of religious conflict and debate would be what each group regards to be the source of life. For the Darklands, Life comes from the volcano, and they have their own myths about a dragon breathing life into one. Fire and warmth would be important to a reptile species. Volcanoes spew ash, which can make the lands around it very fertile for when they do have agriculture periods between eruptions. The Darkland time cycle probably even revolves around the volcano, much in the way Ancient Egypt revolved around the flooding of the Nile. The Volcanoes, which were said to be brought into being by dragons, are what Koopas would regard as the source of life.
Meanwhile, of course it makes sense that the Beanians would have gods that are physically shaped like the Sun and Moon. A plantbased species that may be capable of some extent of photosynthesis and relying on the sun and moon for growth and blooming makes sense. It would also make sense that the one shaped like a moon is the Thunder God. Sunshine and rain would be a very natural duality for a plant based species. You'd need both in order to grow and flourish.
So my current framework is basically that the Star Spirits we meet in Paper Mario 64 are the supreme beings, or at least very close to it, with a whole hierarchy of Star Spirits and Star Sprites that would probably function like an angelic or even the demonic hierarchy is Abrahamic religions, which would include Geno and Starlow, and then there would be other entities that either were Star Spirits that took on a new form, or something created by the stars.
I was toying with the idea of the Pure Heart and Chaos Heart being primordial entities that predated the stars and represented Creation and Entropy, but I'm not sure if I want to continue that train of thought or not.
I also think that where royal Koopas are essentially demigods from dragons, the Ancients may be demigods from the Stars, and it is why their magical abilities are so strong and why Pixls were something to be so concerned about.
(Also if someone has ideas about other potentially divine entities in the Mario World, please let me know. This is a potentially huge rabbithole of research)

SPM Supporting Cast.
Here's some of the supporting cast for my SPM AU comic. This should be the last sheet I make for height chart refs, but I plan to make individual bio sheets for the characters so I can reference back to them for writing purposes. (They're also relatively easy content to make quickly to keep my posting numbers up lol) So look forward to those.
In the meantime, have some info: First up is Lord Vulmiar, Count Bleck's father. I hade to make his design from scratch because I didn't like how he looked in the Manga. His eyes and mouth are more of a purple to show his age. I also went with a design that contrasts Count Bleck, to kinda illustrate how he's more of an antagonistic force. Shadoo is one of my favorite designs. I gave her white lines to give off a negative light feel. Felt right considering she's a shadow. It also helps give her dark color pallet a bit more pop. Her clothes were also meticulously thought out but that's spoiler territory so I'll hold off on that. King Croacus is also a favorite of mine. I wanted something regal and fancy, yet also had a bit of danger to it because he's a rose. So I gave him spiked accessories to mimic that. I also made him look quite femme because that's the vibes his canon design gives me. The freckles are a reference to the spots that Croacus has in game on his face too. EDIT: I changed his rose to look like his closed head in game. Luvbi got changed quite a bit cause I thought her canon design was super boring. Her dress is an attempt at giving her something similar to Jaydes. Luvbi has Wing arms because While Jaydes has arms, Grambi doesn't, so this is a middle ground. Grambi doesn't have many changes, aside from proportions to fit my style, and actually having a body hiding behind his beard. Jaydes was given arms and dress pattern was randomized a bit more. Other than stylization, she's largely the same as well.

"The perfect family..."
"destroyed."
I decided to draw my family (used a base by Chazi). I got a bit emotional while making this. I miss my sister most of all, I've had my bad moments with both my parents. I'll explain more under the cut.
My father (floating on the left), Lunar, who lost his mind and destroyed my sister's soul by turning her into the Pixl Queen, stopped being kind to me, so I returned him the nastiness.
My mother (on the right), Jayde. After her death, she became who you know today as Queen Jaydes. She despises me, and I despise her. She also cheated on my father (with pre-death Grambi) back when he was still kind. She was not a good person, but I still missed her when she died.
Then we have my sister (next to my father), Jayde, who later became the Pixl Queen, then Shadoo, and eventually The Shadow Queen (TTYD happened a few years after SPM). I miss her a lot, and I wish I spent more time with her. I mostly have memories of visiting her in the hospital. She died as I was talking to her. We knew for a while she wasn't going to make it, but it broke me when it was proven true. She was just a child... Four years younger than me, she died 12 years old.
I should note, it was very common in the Tribe of Darkness for mothers and daughters to share a name.

yall i see a lot of spm fanworks where characters swear on grambi and it got me thinking right
grambi isn’t like the creator of the universe canonically he’s just the ruler of heaven. he’s not even the one who judges your soul thats his wife (who i also see people using as an in universe swear albeit way more rarely)
now as far as i know we don’t know of any characters that directly created the universe or even the mushroom planet
you know who we do have? rosalina. mother of the cosmos
and im gonna use her as a swear teehee

How weird would it be if after the events in the main story of spm, Blumiere stayed as count bleck?
Like, Timpani had to take the man she loved to the places they'd been before cause he doesn't remember, kinda like BOTW with link n zelda?
Alternatively, in their relationship, when he does remember and yet he's still a bad dude, count bleck just gets unbelievably confident knowing he's untouchable now and people know what he did. So no one could touch Timpani...
*Timpani takes Count bleck back to her bedroom* "See now this is PROPERLY where we first met my dear..."
Bleck: Why would that be? 😏
Timpani: You had a concussion and several bruises after you fell from that cliff? Why else... 😳 Oh dear grambi!
Bleck: Ah, well, our efforts were far from fruitful if I was bruised and battered without energy to spare. Are you asking me to meet you again in bed? We can try this again for an "alternate ending"~
Timpani: ... Is it possible to reverse a curse with another concussion?
(Timpani won't let on yet but she secretly likes it 😂)

spm chapters as the 7 deadly sins bc i said so
1 - sloth
2 - envy
3 - greed
4 - gluttony
5 - wrath
6 - pride
7 - lust
chapter 8 is special and therefore doesn't count. reasoning below ^-^
chapter 1 is relatively slow paced I feel. no real threat just yet. the void is small. you're not rushed. and chapter 1 *feels* like one of the longer chapters to me? esp the desert. there's smth about the desert.
chapter 2 is Mimi. sort of taking Merlee's Mansion. it doesn't make too much sense to me but it's really the only one that fits. post game she actually becomes the carer/owner of Merlee's Mansion. so. take it as you will.
chapter 3 Francis kidnaps your guiding pixl, Tippi. you're without her the entire chapter. he refuses to give her back until you defeat him. plus, post game, he makes a replica of her called Tiptron, and charges you the max amount of coins you can carry at once, 999. could also be... lust. since. dating sim.
chapter 4 i have no real reason for other than it's the one that makes the most sense part two. based on Squirps needing chocolate to be able to duplicate himself briefly. there's not many places that require an npc needing food so.
chapter 5 being wrath is the most makes sense one I feel. the whole plot of chapter 5 builds the floro sapiens up as the bad guys, but in reality, the only reason they've been kidnapping cragnons is because they've been poisoning the water and the floro sapiens had an obvious reason for wrath there.
chapter 6... guh. chapter 6 man. the void consumes it. but every Sammer Guy stands strong, even knowing they're all about to die. they stop fighting you and let you pass. perhaps not the most prideful thing but I just think that. it makes sense.
chapter 7 is confusing to sort of piece. I think envy maybe could have suited it. anyway, the way lust is pieced into it is that Queen Jaydes and Grambi are both rulers of their respective region, and though it's never really stated what their relationship *is* they technically have a daughter together. except not biologically. so not really lust. but almost. you get me? I don't. (I hc they're both 🖤🩶🤍💜)

updates having beaten the game
i know ive said this like twice already but i really really wish that more exploration stuff was unlocked by the acquisition of new pixls & characters. like, they consistently allow you to access things to complete their respective chapter, & they let you reach the next heart pillar, & that's basically it. it's particularly disappointing considering that it would take very little--toss a block cudge can break somewhere in chapter 3, or have a treasure room in flipside that you cant enter until you have carrie, or even put a peach-related thing in 7-1. then again, in the absence of badges & proper sidequests, what would the rewards even be? more catch cards???
the Chapter Padding/Imposed Backtracking continues to exist, & as i said about ttyd i think that it works best when theres a sufficiently charming framing (eg the overthere stair fruit thing) as opposed to when there's a more flimsy & perfunctory justification (like the hags essentially telling you "redo (part of) this level twice")--it's the difference between feeling like a genuine Quest vs like filling a clunky quota. the dimentio tag thing is like halfway between these two points
i also mentioned in my ttyd liveblog that that game's Big Interactive Set Pieces (like the punis and the glitz pit) drastically reduce in number after chapter 3, but spm keeps them through almost every chapter--the underchomp, the dorguys, etc appear pretty late in the game! tbh i get the sense that in terms of structure spm was designed a lot more holistically than ttyd was--hence the insane degree of foreshadowing
the underchomp is kind of fascinating. it's shockingly in-depth (there's interactions for every pixl???) for being essentially a one-off set piece that railroads you to victory
catch cards are mildly interesting but theyre the kind of collection task that's just too herculean to undertake--like, i can only do completionism up to a certain point, & if completing the list is going to rely on a LOT of chance-based rolls then i might as well just install genshin
women really are written in Some Kind Of Way (the hags, luvbi getting in verbal slapfights with tippi & peach, etc)
it would have been really easy to just make the 3d environments be the 2d environments With Extras, so im really glad that they pretty consistently make you lose access to 2d objects and/or add additional hazards
i have found it beneficial to the game experience to just actively Never use hp plus or power plus
"block meal" is so fucking funny
the overthere levels might be the ones where my attention wanders most--tbh ive never really cared for heaven, just like from an aesthetic standpoint
i will say though, the overthere has what might be my favourite background in the game (and that's saying something lol)...... the many, many parallax layers of interlocking circles function almost as an interactive study in adaptive composition
the bonechill fight is a bit of a letdown in contrast to the buildup
i said this before, but i really think all of the "doubled atk" effects ahouldve been +1 or +2 instead, or otherwise all the enemies & bosses shouldve had 1.5 or 2x the hp
the scene where luvbi "dies" was surprisingly heartfelt--her spat with grambi & jaydes produces a sense of emotional authenticity that really elevates the scene beyond the sum of its parts in a way that i dont think any mario game has even really attempted since. yesterday i watched it 2017 for the first time and throughout all the hollow, vapid dead-brother scenes i was struck by how comical that movie's failure to illustrate earnest grief & family dynamics was in comparison to a ~3 minute cutscene from super paper mario
on that note, i really like how after that heartfelt scene when grambi is like "please...... take care of the pure heart............" luigi is like "okeydokey." girl read the room
i LOOOOVVVEEE when dimentio is like "oh btw count, have you ever heard the name 'blumiere'~?" like he didnt gain anything from that it was just pure cattiness, im obsessed with him
i like how the subchapters of castle bleck are themed around their respective bosses--o'chunks's level is a gauntlet, mimi's level is full of tricks & traps, dimentio's level has puzzles & illusions, and bleck's level is like a final labyrinth
castle bleck is pretty similar to the palace of shadow insofar as theyre both largely linear gauntlets rather than "true" dungeons, yet for the most part i like castle bleck a lot better.... i think it's probably a mix of the platformer style being better suited to that kind of level design + the strength of the aesthetic
the final bosses are fun, especially super dimentio. the theme is great, and i LOVE the idea that luigi is like The Ultimate Darkness In Universe & that's just something we're not going to examine further or ever talk about again
between that and negative zone the nintendo wii really was just spoonfeeding luigi to matpat huh
the ending still makes me emotional as an adult! i cant rule out that nostalgia/carrying over the sentiments & attachments that i formed as a kid plays a large part in that, but i dont want to downplay the execution of the scene itself--it's sincere & evocative, it pays off a LOT of buildup, it plays to the attachments you form to the cast, and the music that plays in the wedding scene is gorgeous
nastasia is probably the saddest character. if only she couldve fixed him,,,
replaying super paper mario, sporadic thoughts post-chapter 2:
very easy so far--& although ttyd was also easy, spm's gameplay is sadly substantially less rich thab ttyd's was
having said that the game design in spm is! unrelentingly charming!! the use of platforming as a framework for a varied stream of stage styles (straightforward levels, dungeons, towns, the entire 2-3 Situation) is creative in a way that imo predicts the sort of things the mario maker community later ended up making. chapter 2's set pieces in particular are extremely quirky (the rooms with traps, the rubee thing, the mazelike basement, the merlee game show lmao)
few platformers have boss fights that feel like genuine Combat, so that's pretty cool
i will confess that as a First Dungeon, yold ruins doesnt have half the sauce of hooktail castle--it's much more linear in layout, with far less of that zelda-y "explore & comprehend the space" principle that made ttyd's dungeons hit
in a similar vein, it's kind of crazy how tippi has like a fraction of the personality that goombella had. it's a bit sad for the character doing the vast majority of the talking to just.... not really have any opinions on anything
the momentum of the chapters likewise means very few npcs ever get to stick out. like, even the "first town crotchety old mayor" character was a total one-and-done, one dialogue and you never have a reason to speak to him again (mostly just speaks to the game structure, which is as mentioned a bold enough exercise that i feel i cant really fault it for that)
bringing up a menu to use items In A Platforming Context is not at all natural to me, so im finding myself just not really using them
this game is a masterclass in visual design imo. the npcs & enemies & pixls being made of primitives that reconfigure themselves into different shapes really elevates the interplay of 2d & 3d, the backgrounds/environments are extremely aesthetically satisfying (the Mathmosphere in lineland, the optical illusion in the sky in gloam valley, all of castle bleck), & i love how the constant "digital/tech" motif (eg the "dragging selection boxes to flip/teleport", the trees & shrubs looking like something youd make in ms paint, etc) is an ingenious progression of paper mario's core aesthetic design
dimentio is so fun
the inter-chapter dialogue flashbacks are surprisingly earnest? for such a tongue-in-cheek game where almost every line of dialogue contains a joke of some kind, those exchanges feel humourless & sincere. that probably contributes to the Space the game occupies in all of our memories lol
i ADOOOORE nastasia
likewise it was really interesting how peach's "escape" sequence after chapter 1 was (while, again, still extremely sardonic) aesthetically & narratively framed with such a sense of Hopelessness. that's not to say like "woahh this mario game is 10x darker than you thought!!!!", more that it's just not a space the series commonly ventures into
the Ancients stuff is being leaned into extremely hard lol. ttyd mostly teases at that kind of "mysterious rpg lore" thing peripherally (the riddle tower inscriptions, grifty, etc) so it's interesting how spm puts it front & centre in contrast, without ever sacrificing the sense of mystique
this game really highlights how interesting the wiimote is as a controller--pressing the A button while holding it sideways (ie removing your left thumb from the direction input to press a button) is something that i cant think of any other controller doing, & it projects onto that button a really interesting sense of, like, Valence
it's the kind of game that seems to beg for one of thsoe posts like "things that ACTUALLY HAPPEN in _____"
#spm liveblog#indigoing#i would like to come back to this with more updates after the postgame#then again i said the same thing about ttyd and then Forgot. soooo#indigo effortposts
