20. Raph vs a Volcano - Coming Out of Their Shells

Did you know Joe Versus the Volcano came out in 1990? Do you know what else came out in 1990? This justification is tenuous, at best, I know, but I have and will continue to use these prompts to talk about Raph how ever I want.

I haven't watched any recordings of the live show yet, but here are some of my favorite moments from the album supplemented with wiki details in no particular order. Diving fully into the frame story because who is going to stop me.

Raph is the lead vocalist on most of the songs and plays like three instruments

impressively musically inclined

apparently the first of the four to get into music

boy's got a gorgeous voice and a nice range of pitch and timbre

he wrote all the music!!! and Mikey wrote the words!! and they sing lead together!

followed by the most beautifully sung line you ever did hear

it's Mikey talking up all of his brothers, and he dedicates it to Splinter, and it's the sweetest thing ever

Splinter's song and the implication that as they were writing the songs, Raph or Mikey were like, 'Dad! Do you wanna sing with us!'

Splinter was the one who asked them to write him a song

cuz like he could have just sung back-up and/or played an instrument like Leo and Donnie

but he has his own ENTIRE song

and since Splinter is the most supportive dad ever

of course, they gave him his own vague-probably-metaphoric-but-still-pretty song

the music, in general, is really interesting and enjoyable

sing about it, skipping stones, and walk straight have really good musical moments

pizza power and cowabunga have my favorite lyrics

Something that I have talked about a few times is the fact that Leo seems to struggle to make a code name for himself based off of his own interests unlike his brothers

Leo: I’m changing my code name too, uh... Blue Bluey! No... Blue... uh-

When compared to his brothers who all seem to come up with code names based off of their own interests whether it’s Donnie with Chess, Raph with music or Mikey with his various doctor personas, Leo can’t seem to come up with a code name outside the colour that his father gave him.

However on the other side of that something that I think is kind of interesting is we do not really hear Raph & Donnie’s code names for Leo.

Donnie: This is Purple Knight is everyone in position

Raph: Red King is set

Donnie: Orange Pawn please use your-

Mikey: What!? Why am I the pawn?

Donnie: Cyber Bishop, Plan B

Leo: See that? That is a cool code name

In the episode Mind Meld we find out that Donnie gave himself & his family Chess Code Names calling himself Purple Knight, Raph Red King, Mikey Orange Pawn & Shelldon Cyber Bishop.

However we don’t ever really hear Leo’s Chess Code Name, with the only thing we really know about it being that it most likely begins with the colour Blue. And we don’t ever really hear April’s Chess Code Name as she was not on that particular mission with the Turtles.

However even though we don’t ever really hear Leo & April’s Chess Code Names I have seen people assume that their Chess Code Names would be Blue Rook & Yellow Queen as those are two of the Chess positions that we don’t really hear get used in the episode.

Raph: Yellow Submarine are we clear?

April: Affirmative Red Rover

Raph: Purple Rain, do you see the target?

Similar to how Donnie was shown to give his family Chess Code Names in the episode Mind Meld, in the first episode of Rise & in the episode Bullhop, Raph gave himself, April & Donnie the code names Red Rover, Yellow Submarine & Purple Rain respectively which are all song titles.

However we don’t really get to hear the code names Raph gave Leo & Mikey though it can be assumed that Raph’s code names for Leo & Mikey would be song titles with the words blue & orange in them respectively & some possible code names that I have heard for Leo within the fandom fit Raph’s code naming style have been Mr. Blue Sky or Blue Monday.

Leo: I’m Captain Bluemask

Leo: It’s me, you’re favourite teen detective Leo Splinterson 

Something that I’ve talked about a couple of times is how Leo doesn’t seem to base his code names off of his own interests the way his brothers seem to either basing his code names off of the situation he’s in such as calling himself Captain Bluemask in the episode Portal Jacked 

Or Leo seems to come up with a code name that ties back to his family such as when Leo calls himself Leo Splinterson in the episode Bad Hair Day due to the fact that he’s Splinter’s son.

Leo: I’m changing my code name too, uh... Blue Bluey! 

However something that I think is kind of interesting is that even though Leo seems to struggle coming up with a code name for himself we never really hear Raph & Donnie’s code names for him either, with both Raph’s code names for his family based off of song titles & Donnie’s code names for his family based off of chess pieces Leo is the one whose code name we don’t really hear for either of them.

We know both Donnie & Raph’s Code Names for each other & we know Raph’s code name for April even though we don’t really know Donnie’s code name for her & we know Donnie’s code name for Mikey even though we don’t really know Raph’s code name for him but we don’t really know what either Raph or Donnie’s Code Names are for Leo.

Raph: Hey! Where’s Leo?

Mikey: I’m sure wherever he is, he’s trying to save us

Raph: Leo probably talked his way straight into Big Mamma’s dungeon 

Donnie: It was Leo! He did it on purpose!

Leo: I’m only talking to you to set the record straight, I didn’t do it on purpose! I mean how could I? I had half a fridge on my chin!

When compared to the idea that Leo might struggle to find a code name for himself as he might struggle to find an identity for himself outside of his family, the fact that we don’t really hear his families code names for Leo might possibly be symbolic for the possibility that Leo’s family don’t fully have a grasp on Leo’s identity either..

An ongoing gag within Rise is that whenever one of Leo’s family members try to make assumptions on what Leo’s doing we’re shown Leo doing basically the opposite of what they’ve just said contrasting how Leo is able to predict his family almost perfectly in the episode Many Unhappy Returns showing that Leo might understand his family better than they understand him but Leo’s family being unable to really accurately predict Leo’s action’s might stem from the fact that Leo himself seems to struggle coming up with an identity outside his family.

And since I can't stop talking about aroace characters, here is a list of characters that I headcanon as part of the aroace spectrum, and some canon! In no specific order, and I'm not going to give reasons, I just know that they are aroace (some have strong aroace coding, others just give me aroace vibes). The Wedding of the Cat-ury: A Purr-fect Union of Klunk Hamato and Klunk Splinterson

Mikey @justalittleobsessed from Cabin 15 and Mike @languajix from Cabin 14's Klunks are getting married! We're not kitten.

They're sure this will be a wedding to remember fur-ever!

This was it, the wedding of the cat-ury. Today, two cats were coming together in holy matrimony. It would be a beautiful sight, something no one would ever forget. After all, it wasn’t everyday that two cats got married. That didn’t stop the excitement of the event– having been the talk of the camp. Robotic doves had been flying around with wonderfully crafted invitations throughout the past week advertising the union of cats from two cabins, and now the day had finally come.

The whole beach was decorated with great care and detail: no expense spared. Rows and rows of chairs were lined on either side of a long, orange carpet that led up to an altar. The chairs all had large orange bows on them, with each seat having a bag of cat treats on it.

A large arch ran over the altar, decorated with orange flowers and various orange cat toys, and hung around the beach were fairy lights that twinkle.

As the guests file in they can take in the beauty of the setup, and… maybe the over-the-top decorations for a little cat wedding. Whatever. The people who were putting on this wedding must be serious about the event. And who was anyone to ruin such a joyful occasion?

Overhead speakers are hooked up, playing what sounds like a cat cover to “Marry You” by Bruno Mars on repeat. It can only be described as utterly romantic, of course.

Among the guests to arrive were the the Reptile Conundrum boys @fairydragon, Last of Us AU Mikey, Leo, Donnie, and April @thehermitwitch, as well as a very confused Reni @likablemuffin to be witnesses to the event.

Some guests bring presents too: 7 Wonders Mikey and Don @hitwiththetmnt and RTOT April and Little Leo @misshowdoyoudo eagerly bring gifts– something of which the Klunks will be sure to be most appreciative of.

Once the last of the guests file in the music dies down, the beach going silent as everyone holds their breath. Suddenly, Greyscale Mikey @broken-slime-boi and Smokey @belleyells walk down the aisle throwing out orange flower petals from baskets, before going to seats in the first row, waiting for the main event.

Soon after a wedding song starts playing (also a cat cover) over the speakers.

There’s some shuffling, and then everyone turns towards the back of the aisle. There, a one-armed turtle in a big orange dress sets down a cat – presumably one of the Klunks – who’s in a wedding dress. He appears to be crying. Pulling out a laser pointer, he slowly leads his cat up to the altar, picking the cat back up when he gets there. Again everyone turns their attention to the back of the aisle, where the other Klunk in a similar wedding dress is being set down by a turtle in an orange tux with a green tie. This cat is also led up to the altar with a laser pointer and picked up like its counterpart.

It’s then that a large turtle steps up behind them with a bowtie on – Don @clawsandpaws-creativearchive from Cabin 15 – looking ready to officiate the wedding. Don clears his throat, and everyone turns to face him. “Rrrrr. Click. Snort.” He says in turtle speak, and Smokey stands up, addressing the crowd. “Hey says that Mike and Mikey will hold their Klunks for the wedding, so they don’t kiss too early.” Then sits back down. Don did not, in fact, say that. Most at the wedding don’t know turtle speak, though. Both Mike and Mikey hold their Klunks a little closer– Mike’s Klunk pawing at his dress and Mikey’s making little mewing sounds which he attempts to shush with little success and then just gives up in favor of giving her kisses.

Don starts speaking again, all in turtle speak. Almost immediately Mike starts to sob, to which Mikey hands him over a handkerchief seemingly ready for this very moment. The Maid of Honor dabs at his eyes then blows into the cloth dramatically, then repeating the process. At the same time the Best Man fans at his eyes to keep the tears out, loudly crying: “My baby! Oh my baby is getting married!” as well as various incoherent sounds.

Both Mike and Mikey seem inconsolable. The Klunks look on curiously in their wedding dresses at their owners.

As the speech goes on the dramatics increase: at one point Mike drops to his knees, sobbing harder, and Mikey yells: “This is the end of an era!” while shaking his head and starting to sob as well. Don keeps on speaking as if nothing is the matter.

(Anyone who does know turtle speak throughout this speech would know that Don only says “Meow” in various tones that make them sound like different words. It’s fairly impressive. Most people still do not understand.)

“Click. Snort. Click.” Don ends with. Smokey stands back up, once again addressing the audience as both Mike and Mikey seem to pull themselves together. “He says ‘You may now lick the bride.’”

Mike and Mikey take their Klunks and smash their faces together. The cats seem unsure about the matter, pawing at each other until they’re pulled away. “Klunks Hamato-Splinterson everyone!” Smokey announces, and both Michelangelos hold their cats up to the crowd, followed by uproarious cheers.

The two run down the aisle, while the guests continue to cheer, showing their cats in their little wedding dresses as they go past. Eventually they run off and away, leaving everyone else. As they all start to leave, a sign points towards the other side of the beach:

The reception is every bit as cheerful and bright as the wedding had been. Everything was decorated in orange again – orange flower centerpieces on tables with orange tablecloths, a dance floor that was orange and green, and ribbons tied around random items with orange ribbons on them.

Once the guests had found their seats and had started eating (a variety of orange foods and drinks, of course), Mike and Mikey called everyone’s attention.

They sat on a raised platform with their own table– their Klunks in-between them and playing with cat toys in a little pen for all to see. Mikey taps his knife on his “champagne” glass, standing up along with Mike as the attention is diverted to them.

“As Best Man,” He points to himself and his very fashionable outfit, “And as Maid of Honor,” He gestures to Mike, who does a little twirl in his dress, “We have a few words we’d like to say.” One of the Klunks below hacks up a hairball in the momentary silence. Mike and Mikey don’t seem to be too concerned on the matter. “Ever since the day I gave birth to me dear Klunk–”

Mike shakes his head. “–you did not–”

“–from my own body, I knew the day may come that she would finally decide to leave the nest.” Mikey sniffles, pulling out a handkerchief from his other pocket this time to dab at his own eyes. “She was always such an independent girl, but I had hoped I could keep her close for awhile longer, ya know? But then… then Klunk met Klunk.”

Mikey scratches behind the ears of the cats as Mike continues on, “We both saw how they clicked. It was obvious from the beginning there was something special there. Not only did they start to find happiness with each other, but I was able to find my long lost twin.”

“It’s crazy how that works, isn’t it?” Mikey picks back up, Mike nodding in agreement. “Not only did they come together, but they brought us together too. I couldn't be happier to call Mike my twin-in-law.”

"It only seemed right, that the most adorable, most gentle, most-" Mike sobs, picking up where he left off in the wedding "Special little girl in the whole wide world would find an almost as adorable, gentle, and special girl to get cat married to." 

"Now hold on-"

Mike nudged Mikey with a grin, both of them smiling. “Now here we are, two months later. Mikey, I couldn’t be happier to call you my twin-in-law either. To all the days to come…” Mike holds up his glass.

“…and to all the memories we’ll make!” Mikey adds. “Cheers to Klunks Hamato-Splinterson!” They both finish at the end, taking long sips from glasses as everyone around them also shows their joy.

A few minutes later both Klunks are brought to the dancefloor, which soon gains a crowd around it for the married couple’s first dance. Setting them in the middle of the floor, both the Maid of Honor and the Best Man pull out cat toys as music starts to play.

With the start of the song, both boys move the cat toys around to the beat, making their cats follow in a slow dance. Although at first not clear, it’s easy to hear now that it is another cat cover to a song. As cats sing “Lover” by Taylor Swift, the kitties move around each other, although soon seem to forget the toys in lieu of playing with the other.

Soon enough everyone is invited to the dance floor, where a variety of cat cover songs plays well into the night.

“Thank you for coming!” Mike waves as everyone leaves, holding up his Klunk one last time.

Mikey does the same, although it's more clear on his Klunk how her dress is askew and a little tattered in some places from the newlyweds playing and dancing with each other. “And don't forget to thank all of our amazing counselors for footing the bill and offering to do clean up! This wouldn't have been possible without you!”

This truly has been a joyous occasion, and we thank everyone who came (and miss the ones who couldn't)!

When they crashed one of the Purple Dragons' hideouts they were not expecting one of them to turn on the others.

To them, you so quickly switched sides it was kinda suspicious.

For you however, quitting was a long time coming.

You joined to cover your housing problem after your parents got screwed over by loan sharks.

You never liked how the Purple Dragons did things but at least you were allowed to let loose.

when the turtles showed up it was the first time you seen them, but not the first time you've heard of them.

You knew you were supposed to beat them up.

But you were easily impressed by skilled fighting. It was safe to say that they were some pretty skilled fighters.

And well... The red one may or may not have a certain appeal to you that you couldn't quite place.

Though like previously mentioned, they found you a little suspicious.

Casey was especially unhelpful in trying to earn their trust and befriend them.

Lucky for you April was their to stick up for you.

Casey and the turtles had their reservations about how quickly she trusted you but she hasn't gotten hurt yet so there wasn't much they could do.

Mikey was the next to want to give you a chance with Donny coming around quickly after him.

Leo wasn't thrilled but he decided he would give you a chance.

ONE CHANCE.

Raph and Casey were still stuck on not giving you an inch but majority rules so they didn't get much of a say in the end.

When you went to the lair for the first time Leo, Raph, and Casey were watching you like hawks.

But it was when you met Master Splinter that your rep changed.

Remember when they first met April and Splinter was like, Imma trust my gut on this one and say your good.

He basically does the same thing with you and that's how you got Leo on your side.

Raph didn't exactly trust you but he was more willing after Master Splinters evaluation.

Casey still didn't like it though.

The more time you spent with the guys the more fights you ended up with them.

That's where they really began to trust you.

You proved that you had their backs through thick and thin.

Your mannerisms used to make them skeptical of you but now they see it's just how you act.

You slang and body language was still very reminiscent of the Purple Dragons, and you were still quite the street fighter too.

Because of the nature of your attitude you ended up clicking best with Raph and Casey, as ironic as that was.

You three often had movie nights and went out patrolling the city together.

You even spar together.

Admittedly Casey felt like a third wheel sometimes butwedon'ttalkaboutthat!!

You and Mikey ended up bonding over your mutual love of horror flicks and Donny liked having you test or using you to test his new inventions.

Leo appreciates having intelligent conversations with you.

It took a while for him to figure out that was something you were capable of though after seeing how you interact with his brothers.

After a bit though he'll come to realize he actually enjoys your company when you're more mellow.

It took some of April's help too since you two have been talking the longest if the group.

All in all, the Splinterson family is a good time.

yea apparently the second missing one would've been trapped in another dimension... Mikey probably would've been the key for that

Cousin Sid - didn't mean to blog so much about this episode but Leo

the theme song is different!!!! 

it was so subtle at first I thought I might've been imagining it or hadn't paid enough attention to certain parts before or maybe it was because I was watching on the tv instead of my laptop or

but then the boys got lines!!!

right off the bat, we get Leo being angsty by the window (mostly awkward, that position looks so awkward)

hmm I'm sensing some hypervigilance and, given their lives, I can only imagine (for now at least) it'll pay off and be reinforced

wow, you guys really weren't kidding about Leo

I guess I expected something more subtle but I'm really glad it's not

okay Leo's "I hate purple dragons" really got to me

because because he's not saying it to commiserate with his brothers it just sounds so dark and scary and hateful

an injured Mikey is a very restless and bored Mikey indeed

actually all of them are, Raph's just expressing it as bravado and messing with Mikey (verbally) and Donny is experiencing internet withdrawals

 ahhhh here's that Raph loving it when Leo talks tough bit

"we should get Karai to stab him more often" OH WOW HE REALLY SAID THAT

and Leo just GROWLS at him holy cannoli

love that Mikey's very soft and concerned response to this is to get between Leo and Raph and sort of take Leo's side, I guess?

A RANT:

THE NEON LEON

(I) A rise to leadership

Pun intended bc Leo would love it

Has this been done yet? Of course, but i love ranting about my favorite characters and boy, rise tmnt has so much to rant about (well, the whole tmnt franchise has enough material to speak for HOURS buttt rise lives forever in my heart so yeah i'm biased). Might talk about mutant mayhem in the future idk.

Leonardo Hamato/Splinterson has always been the leader, the one that carries the weight of carrying the team and following splinter's steps as the next "head" of the family (as said by splinter in the 2012 tmnt). And yeah in much of the versions of the turtles, this is a very important aspect of his personality, it's his literal purpose; it's the catalyst for a lot of the narratives and storylines seen across the tmnt universe: His fights with Raph, his anxiety, his inferiority complex, his constant wish to be better, how he sometimes neglects (or simply goes against?)his brother's feelings in order to keep them and the team itself safe.

Being the leader is both the weight and medal that comes with being Leonardo, that sisyphean task that we will always see try to accomplish over and over again.

So if we want to explore why he is a great leader... shouldn't we take that weight off his shoulders?

And that my people, it's what rise does perfectly. The best way to prove that Leo is a great leader? To show us how he can handle the team from the shadows, let us see how well he knows his team's strengths and shortcomings.

But don't just make him want to be the leader, no no, show us why we should all trust him to.

First of all: Leo panicking at the face of danger, might be useful sometimes.

Honest to god: i think the rise writers and animators are amazing. They're so GOOD at showing us important pieces of the characters even without directly saying it.

First of all, he doesn't have a fight or flight response because he straight up waves his ōdachi directly at anything that attacks him and his brothers (bro has kill om sight sense, he literally sliced warren one time, remember?). He will always have the advantage, even when surprised. Also the way he lightens up the situation with his witty banter and one liners when stress is too much? Extra points for keeping team morale up👍

Or in a different case, leo's panic when the mad dogs get in trouble upon a stronger rival. Why is it great? Because even though he's losing his absolute shit, he's able to act and take the next conscious step; even when it's used for laughs: He calls for his father when his family is in danger. It may sometimes be a funny gag ; like in "Flushed but never forgotten" or soul fucking wrenching like when they're attacked by shredder and RAPH IS PROTECTING DONNIE AND LEO SCREAMS AND I- *ehem*. But he knows splinter it's capable of defending them, he trained them after all (this may be arguable when talking about season 1 splint but well, he still recognizes his father as a ninja and his master).

And thus, the next marvel of Leo:

B) He's completely aware of the team's abilities

He's a middle child, he has seen everything, and the most perfect example of it: Many unhappy returns.

BOY IF THAT'S NOT THE MOST AMAZING DEMONSTRATION OF LEO'S LEADERSHIP AND STRATEGY IDK WHAT ELSE YOU'RE LOOKING FOR

He trusts his siblings completely, sure he looks out for them and supports them when needed (while being sarcastic about it), but he knows they're amazing at the hero thing.

I wouldn't doubt it if Splinter; being with Leo most of the episode saw just how in control he was of the situation and went: "dude...why are you not the one leading the team? You're...actually so smart wtf????"

C)He knows how to dial down his brother's enthusiasm and calls out his father's faults (and sometimes hypocrisy)

Remember the paper thieves episode?

That's peak leader Leo

The whole team was full on trying to get killed for the lols, and what does he do? Pulls them to the side and explains why they should start with something more simple and gives a speech on why focusing on the "easier task" it's still a good hero job (look out for the small/weaker ones, right?)

Not only that, but he's the one that constantly calls out his dad's mess ups, remaining by his brother's side and defending them (THIS IS NOT A SPLINTER SLANDER, I'M SAD DAD SUPPORTER AND I WILL TALK ABOUT IT LATER) seen as one of the YouTube shorts or when splints nags then about keeping secrets from him: he stands for his team, "you are not supposed to do that/you do the same thing you yell at us for"

He both inspires and defends his team, and hey; a leader is not the one that orders, but the one that motivates and supports you.

D) He's their personal hype man

Cue back to point B, he is amazed by his siblings abilities, even if he dies hide it sometimes. Remember when mikey wanted to go on a solo mission? He's fully on board and never doubts mikey is in control of the situation (sure he does go to "save him" with the others later on but come on, you all heard the call and saw Raph panicking. He trusts him but he's still his little brother y'know?)

He knows Donnie is an absolutely genious and is completely aware of Raph's dedication to the hero gig and responsability.

April and Splints? He knows they're completely capable of holding their own and willingly helps them when the situation calls for it.

HECK EVEN CASEY, A LITERAL BOY HE JUST MET. He is aware of casey's passion and abilities; i mean, if his own future self trusts him as the only one capable to fix everything, why shouldn't he?

Conclusion: Leo quite literally grew to deserve the role of the leader.
