The Stick
One slow evening in the ER, we noticed our doc using a green cane in an unusual shape to push on pressure points on his back and shoulder. He would hold the cane on a part of the back of his shoulder between the spine and the scapula. Apparently it worked well enough for a few of the nurses to have discussions about it.
One of the nurses asked doc where he got it. He didn't speak English as his primary language, but he was kind enough to explain how it worked and look it up for us. He was straight-laced to the point he listened ONLY to a Christian radio station (at least in our presence).
We went into his office and he got on the 'primary doc' computer and typed in, "MASSAGE STICK". The pictures that showed up were not what he had or what we had discussed. It was all dildo's and worse. He freaked out!
We called him out because it was kind of funny. He was obviously mortified and embarrassed. We were just basically bored. "Oh my God! Dr Blank! What have you been looking at?" We tried to seem shocked and offended even though none of us were.
"Not this! Oh I am so sorry!" He frantically tried to hit different keys to make the dildo and sex toy pictures disappear.
"I am sure you haven't been looking at this stuff before now. I thought I knew you. Wow." I started the slow walk away from his office.
"No I mean it! I was just trying to find the stick you were asking about," as he continued to scramble with the computer keys.
"It's okay. Look at whatever you need to," We were honestly joking and not going to leave him on the hook much longer.
We walked away from his office giggling quietly to ourselves like a pack of teenage bullies. He followed us, and tried to explain himself again.
We told him we knew it was just a mistype and we were just joking. We knew he honestly wasn't the type of guy that would be looking up dildo's on his work computer. Having said that, what people do at home, well I never make assumptions about that.
I know Docs that sneak and look up all kinds of things at work. I have walked in on one before. This poor guy in front of me was very professional, and he was unfortunately dealing with semi-unprofessional, bored nursing staff that night.
I hope I told him eventually during our years of working together, "thank you for everything", but in my mind I thank him even more for the laughs we had that night and the other times that he was a "kind of easy target". He was one of the smartest and best I ever worked with. The bad news is, I don't think he never (completely) trusted us again. We pulled a few more pranks on him at other times when the ER was empty. It gave us so much joy, and it typically made him laugh eventually. So, no harm no foul? I hope so.
