Please! (And I am aware I should probably just chalk it up as a Britishism, but the way she casually calls him “darling” in ensuing conversation gave me feels. And that she kept refraining from killing him for longer than I expected — I really needed that relief.) From the time I fell in love with Cassandra Nova in whatever trailer we first see her puppeting Wolverine, I figured I would ship her with Deadpool as my two expected favourites of the film (the two baldies together…plus the amusement of Wade Wilson boning the twin sister of Professor X? the jokes will write themselves). But maybe as late as the last week leading up to release date, I quickly pivoted in seeing the vision of the two British Villains instead, Mister Paradox x Cassandra Nova, on intuitive feeling (Novadox is the best ship name I could come up for them thus far). And I think I was rewarded more than I expected even if still not as much as I wanted. I need that team-up. Like I get that past an extent she would never have a need for him — but I will take an eternity in the multiverse of her just being his domme for all I care (the way she manhandled him in the third act...she went to town on him more extensively than anybody else). I will take anythiiiiing for them. Any content whatsoever. Sensuality or sexuality? What’s the difference?

In the realm of desire, two terms often intermingle, yet they carry distinct and, often, nuanced meanings: sensuality and sexuality. While the latter tends to hog the spotlight, sensuality seems to lurk in the shadows, often overlooked. So, I’ve decided to do a small deep dive, count it as the first dive, to understanding sensuality. I chose this topic because I often confused the two since more often than not what we see is sexual with sensuality sprinkled in to cover up the more overt part of sexuality. That left me curious, what exactly is sensuality it’s not just a lighter version of sexuality. I want to explore this alongside my journey of understanding who I am as a soft domme! So, let’s dive in.

Firstly, let's peek into the linguistics of it all. "Sexuality," has its roots in the Latin word "sexus" (meaning division into male and female). Today it’s used more as an action or preference. It is the way people experience (or don’t experience) and express themselves. It can involve biology, psychology, physical, erotic, emotional, social, and spiritual feelings and behaviors. It can take on different meanings for different people easily. It’s a hotbed of topics, stories, and experiences. What I’m trying to say is that it’s a broad topic that covers an ever-expanding list of definitions. For this essay, let’s just say that it is that primal urge drawing us towards procreation for the sake of simplicity.

On the other hand, "sensuality," derived from the Latin "sensus" (pertaining to the senses), involves sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste. It can be all, one, or a combination of them. It's the soft caress of silk on skin, the aroma of jasmine in the breeze, and the symphony of flavors dancing on the tongue from a decadent meal. Sensuality is the subtle seductress that coaxes us into a realm of heightened awareness and pleasure without needing a “final” act. Sensuality can exist without sex or sexuality even when it can elicit those desires within us. I find that fascinating, not a mention of sex, no nudity, no flirting, and the body is aroused purely by the senses. Isn’t that interesting?

Now, let's dive deeper, picture this: a couple strolling hand in hand through a moonlit garden, their fingertips tracing delicate patterns on each other's skin. The rustle of leaves, the fragrance of blooming blossoms, the gentle hum of insects—every sensation is amplified, every moment dripping with sensuality. There’s no mention of sex, but there is a distinct feeling one has in romantic moments such as these. Pleasure! Without any action taken, pleasure is pulled from the scents, the sounds, the touch…that is sensuality—a symphony of stimuli igniting the fires of passion. More often than not, the ultimate pleasure is mentioning sex or sexual gratification. Maybe our senses become wrapped up so deeply in pleasure we can’t differentiate between pleasure and sex but they are two distinct ideas that can live without each other. Of course, I know that there are different levels of pleasure and we do know the distinction between the two, but do we always recognize the distortion between them?

Let's flip the script for a moment and explore sexuality. Imagine a crowded nightclub pulsating with throbbing beats and gyrating bodies. Sweat-slicked skin, low-eyed gazes, and the heady scent of pheromones hang thick in the air. Now you may think, how is this example not sensual? I never mentioned it wasn’t sensual in its way, the big difference maker here is that the goal is not to bring about pleasure through the senses. It is a place to come together with peers and engage in socializing and/or dancing and more than anything, flirting. All these things are pleasurable in their own ways (depending on who you are) but again the bottom line is that those experiences aren’t defined by the senses. They are defined by the actions.

While both sensuality and sexuality can coexist, I believe these days there’s an overabundance of sexuality and very few instances of sensuality without sex. If sensuality is shown it’s seen as sexual or the very next depiction on screen is sexualized.

Take this lingerie ad. While the satin and lace may feel absolutely wonderful, the image itself isn't focused on how it feels on, the focus is how it looks on and subsequently how you'll feel once it's off.

Sensuality =/= Sex. Although sensuality can set the stage, and sexuality can provide the grand finale—you do not need one to experience the other. They are independent of one another. Two separate entities that can easily walk hand in hand. I believe that the absolute lack of sensual depictions today leads us to a misunderstanding of how to experience life and derive pleasure from it regularly. When we see sensuality and pleasure on screen it’s usually a sexual experience or a luxurious experience, one that will cost more than you would expect, and that’s not what sensual experiences truly consist of. They can certainly be expensive but if you remember the previous definition, you will see that they don’t have to be, they only need to incorporate your senses. If you can experience something pleasurable (to you) and stay present in that moment with that sense or those senses then you are experiencing sensuality. It’s my goal to find my sensual experiences for myself and others like me who find themselves feeling a bit unsatisfied with regular life. I hope to explore and uncover new sensual experiences to share!

Although I don’t plan on sticking just to sensual topics, I do find them very interesting. Sensuality and sexuality are two very strong ideas that make up a lot of our conversations subconsciously. So while I lean towards sensuality as my main focus over sexuality, I like to explore both topics because they are so closely related. I believe that both hold the key to unlocking a world of boundless pleasure and profound connection! And what is a good/happy life if you can’t say it’s pleasing to you?

I started the month strong by cracking, buying the last two books, and finishing Sierra Simone's Thornchapel series (here are my final thoughts), and then mostly spent the rest of the month on ARCs (see below) and a pretty diverse array of romances. All in all a great month!

Bed Me, Baron by Felicity Niven (releases September 7th)

I haven't had this much fun reading a historical romance in a long time. It's one of those romances that start off relatively light and frivolous (and there's an immediate "teach me" moment), but by the end, it really packs an emotional punch. For my full analysis on friends-to-lovers and the daddy of it all, here's my review.

Full Moon Over Freedom by Angelina M. Lopez (releases September 5th)

I'm not one to read romances with magic in them, but Angelina wrote wrote this deeply cultural and spiritual take on magic and superstition and intertwined it with the romance masterfully. Here's my full review.

The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy (releases September 26th)

This book felt particularly special to me because the heroine is a first-generation immigrant and retains both her family's Palestinian culture and that classic can-do American spirit. The cultural rep as well as the feminist legal themes are compelling reasons for why we should be reading and writing more historical romances set later in the Victorian era. Here's my review.

It Had to Be a Duke by Vivienne Lorret (releases November 28th)

Adorable, hysterical, full review coming in a couple months, but here are my reactions.

What Was Meant To Be by Heather Guerre

Small-town romance done right. This one really hit on an emotional level; Rain has been under her father's thumb her entire adult life and was never given the resources and support she needed as someone with autism. As a result, she finds herself coerced into marry Wes, a guy in rural Wisconsin she's never met, so Wes can get the property he needs for his resort (basically a dowry :/). What follows is heartbreaking and uplifting at once: Rain begins to exercise her independence and she and Wes slowly come around to an tentative understanding. This is a book where fucking leads to feelings and there are some great sex scenes in this one. Rain is the dominant one in their sexual relationship, and Wes is 100% here for it... a Good Boy, if you will. It's a soft domme vibe but effective and very natural in my opinion, and I would love to read more of this dynamic in romance novels.

Knockout by Sarah MacLean

I knocked this one out in a day (here are my final thoughts). Plotwise my favorite in the Hell's Belles series (a series of mysterious targeted explosions? come on), and the romance between Imogen and Tommy was a perfectly done Grumpy/Sunshine. Also, if you weren't imagining Detective Inspector William 'The Duke' Wellington while reading Tommy Peck, you were reading it wrong.

Rules of Engagement by Christina Dodd

If there's one thing Christina Dodd excels at, it's writing a bitchy hero in that early 2000s kind of way. Kerrich has a little St. Vincent in him; his biggest issue (apart from his trauma from accidentally mooning the King of England after he fell off a trellis because he saw a girl naked) is that alllll his servants find him so hot they can't help but proposition him, so he decides to find the ugliest governess, procure a child, and become "respectable" thanks to a blackmail threat. Also, he does unironically wear a monocle and I'm here for it. Pamela is the kind of pragmatic heroine I love: she's willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, but when push comes to shove, she feels very little shame in seeking pleasure.

The Prize by Julie Garwood

If you find yourself missing the Lillian-Westcliff dynamic but perhaps want to see it play out in a medieval setting, then this is your book! Royce is a hypercompetent Norman lord, and Nicholaa (yes there's an extra 'a' there) is, as the blurb perfectly puts it, a "resourceful, rebellious and utterly naive" Saxon lady. In the grand theme of Westcliff, there was definitely some conversation about how it was "unlike" Royce to do some not-entirely-consensual stuff during the deflowering scene, to which I say no, it really was... in character. Man was on the brink.

But if that's your jam, then you'll probably enjoy this one.

Redhawk Reunion series by Robin Covington

I found a new favorite Harlequin Desire series this month! The Redhawk Reunion series is about three siblings of Native American descent who were removed from their parents' home by CPS without cause and separated (I strongly urge everyone to look into Indian Adoption Project, the Indian Child Welfare Act, and Haaland v. Brackeen to learn more because it used to be upsettingly common due to government policy). Adam, the hero of the first book, hires PI Tess to find his long-lost siblings and they fall into a FWB situation with a side of secret REVENGE. The second book involves Adam's sister Sarina, who accidentally marries his business partner Justin in Vegas, and they too end up in a FWB situation except, well, as a married (for convenience) couple. As far as Harlequin Desires go, both are top-notch and deliver exactly what you want from this imprint.

I never see enough doms talking about how much we need emotional aftercare just as much as subs do and it genuinely makes me scared because how many of us are walking around in dom drop without knowing it. You need to be reminded that there was consent. You need to be reminded that you are more than any 'violence' you do in scene. You need to be reminded of the relationship you have with your sub outside of a scene. You need to be reminded that the power dynamic the two of you have created is one for pleasure and not oppression. You are not wrong for needing that and any sub worth your time will think so too.
