9, 14, 21? 💖
yay thanks!!
9. Shows on your watch list
Ooo okay, i feel like i've had a lot of shows knocked off the watch list lately because they've been cancelled and i feel like i don't want to get into a show knowing it only has one season and never gets a proper ending. So like Dead Boy Detectives and Kaos for example were on my list but not so much anymore. Still on the list though are Severance and Silo of the new-ish ones, and then Sharp Objects and Midnight Mass of the yeah-i-know-it's-been-forever ones lmao.
14. Tactician, fighter, generalist or supportive role?
Interesting question! I'd say generalist because i truly think one of my strengths in life is adaptability.
21. How do you take your pizza?
I'm a vegetarian so i guess step number one is no meat lmao. Honestly i love a lot of very divisive toppings/flavours like mushrooms and spinach. And aurajuusto my beloved <3 I love a cheesy pizza in general heheheee. So chuck a moderate amount of veggies and a good amount of cheese on there and i'm good lmao. But i do like trying new flavours!
Thank you so much for asking 💖

Hey folks! So in honour of my asshole gallbladder being evicted post-haste, and based on the fact that I can't consume anything by mouth right now so I'm literally dreaming about food, here's some recipe recommendations.
These are my absolute favourites, and I'm going to order them based on how many spoons they require to make.
(Please note this is not... literal spoons, if you're new here. Go look up the Spoons Theory and thank me later)
Final note - I'm not a very good cook yet. I have OFTEN destroyed meals. So the vast, vast majority of these you can follow the instructions exactly and it will taste like it's supposed to. Practice with cooking definitely makes it easier to understand how to cook well over time, but also I have ADHD and my life is much easier when I can just follow a dang list of instructions.
Here we go!
Low Spoons
Instant Pot Indian Tomato Coconut Soup*
Do you like tomato soup, but wish it had some more flavor? This is it. I dream of this soup sometimes. I would kill a man for this soup. Also, all the ingredients are shelf-stable, which is incredibly convenient, and with the added bonus of being dairy-free. Shout out specifically to @hthrrloooo for this one.
Norwegian Rhubarb And Almond Cake
You want to look fancy as shit at whatever thing you're going to? This is your dish. It's super easy to make and fast - I can make it in under an hour - prep, bake, everything. It also tastes incredible, the almond with the rhubarb balances sweet and tart. Also it makes an amazing breakfast.
Artichoke Tomato And Spinach Flatbread
Again, you look fancy, without having to be fancy. It's pretty fast too, so it makes a great dinner. My mom loves this one, it's like spinach artichoke dip on a pizza.
Southwest Quinoa Power Bowl with Honey Lime Dressing*
This is an excellent example of "power bowls", which is a slightly ridiculous name for grain based bowls with proteins and a dressing. I usually change out the quinoa for rice because I don't like quinoa, and for the "adobo seasoning", you can also use spices like chili powder, paprika (that one is strong though), onion powder, and garlic powder. Or buy a shaker of a southwest spice, honestly. This is a great way to learn how to put together a bowl like this - which is usually grain base + cooked veggies + raw veggies + protein + dressing. I will say to taste the dressing as you make it.
Best Tuna Casserole*
I ate SO MUCH of this in university. It is cheesy. It is crunchy. And it is cheap and fast. It's... probably not the healthiest option but who cares. I usually leave out the peas and mushrooms, but that's because I don't like them very much in casseroles. Also as a note - it won't taste like cream of mushroom, that's mostly a base.
Banana Chocolate Chip Muffins
These muffins, my beloved <3. An easy baked good, pretty cheap and fast to make. I also grew up eating a ton of these, so I find them very comforting. You have a friend that needs comfort? Make them these.
Sausage And Potato Roast With Arugula
I bow down to this as the ultimate weeknight meal. It can come together in a half hour, you throw most of the ingredients on a pan, and then add the arugula afterwards. I usually use balsamic on it, because I like pain, but you do you. You also can use regular potatoes and onions, it does not change anything. Sheet pan meals are your friend, folks, and there's a million of them.
Chickpea And Pumpkin Curry*
So cheap! So tasty! So easy! You can absolutely use canned pumpkin instead of actual pumpkin, and you can throw in other things too - chopped carrots or potatoes, cooked chicken, you name it, to make it go farther. Add more salt to this one though. Don't buy canned pumpkin PIE filling by mistake. I will say that's a mistake you only make once.
Medium Spoons
Singapore Noodles With Crispy Tofu*
VERY cheap, which is probably why it's on a website called Good and Cheap lol. I highly recommend that website if you're on a tight budget, it has absolutely saved my butt a few times. Go easy on the sriracha unless you crave the burn though.
Vegan Butter Chicken (with Amazing Tofu)*
This is a recent favourite. I have some issues with dairy (see... the reason I'm typing this lol) and vegan recipes are kind of helpful because they don't have dairy. Also, I like tofu. This is nice and warm and comforting. Also pretty cheap!
Bacon Brussels Sprouts Fried Rice
Ok I know what you're thinking. "Brussel sprouts? Aren't those disgus-" and that is where you stop because I am looking at you with murderous intent. This is the recipe that made brussel sprouts my favourite vegetable, because the trick is ADDING OIL AND FLAVOR. And NOT. BOILING. THEM. EVER. Fry them! Or bake them in the oven! Do not turn them into horrible goop. Anyways. I love this recipe so much, and there was a period when I was making it, like, every two weeks. Fairly cheap, easy, and so so so comforting and tasty. Also alternatively fry some brussel sprouts in a pan with butter - ok ok ok I'll stop.
Challah Bread
My go to, no fail, I-WILL-make-you-love-me bread recipe. Bread can be tricky and intimidating to figure out because there's a fair amount of intuition with it - I'm not great at it yet. But this recipe has enough other things in it that it's pretty fool proof, and oh my god it's so good guys. It's so lovely. It single-handedly won over the extended family of my partner. Also it'll get fucking huge so fair warning, you'll have a LOT.
Pumpkin Chili
The only chili I make. I'm serious. You can follow it exactly and it will be amazing every time. Can you tell I love pumpkin yet? This is rich and smoky and uuughhh I love it. It takes some time (chopping everything and measuring, mostly) but it's so good and makes a ton of food.
Chickpea Casserole with Lemon, Herbs, and Shallots
You want an actually vegetarian casserole? More importantly, you want leftovers for the next 3 weeks? This is your friend. Takes some time to put all of the ingredients together, but man is it worth it for the amount of food it makes, and it's really nice and fresh.
Twice Baked Chicken Pot Pie Potatoes With Crispy Bacon
Do you like chicken pot pie? This is chicken pot pie, but a million times easier and without needing to make pastry (my partner has to make the pastry in our apartment. Mine is like cardboard). It makes a pie filling's worth of sauce, and I usually bake like 5 potatoes at a time and then keep the sauce separate in the fridge and eat it for a week. You can leave some of the things out if you like and it'll still be good - like in university I didn't want to pay for bacon, so I left it out. Or add something else! Sausage! Turnip! Peas! A protein substitute! More cheese! The world is your potato.
High Spoons
Dark Chocolate Chunk Raspberry Crumb Muffins
I made these recently and oh man are they good. They're now one of my showing-off baked goods. High spoons because they actually do take a fair amount of ingredients and prep time, but it is worth it. (I got ONE of these before I got sent to the hospital. I'm still bitter)
Three Layer Pumpkin Brownies
These ones definitely need a fair amount of time to make. Not a lot of skill! Just time, because of all the layers and needing to chill them. They are very decadent and rich. And also it makes a ton. I make them for Thanksgiving most of the time. And again featuring my best friend, pumpkin lol.
London Fog Earl Grey Tea Cake
Ok you want to show off? Look frigging fancy? Have a tea party? This makes you look fancy as shit. It does take some time to put together, and you do need to be careful with measurements and baking time because it's pretty delicate. But it's absolutely gorgeous when it turns out - light and delicately flavored and sweet.
Eggplant Fatteh - Lands and Flavors
OK so. Unfortunately I don't have a link right now, because hospital wifi is ehhhhh. BUT. It's so good. It's definitely high spoons, and I don't make it very often, because you will be stuck in the kitchen for a long time. Absolutely use premade pasta sauce instead of making it on the fly, unless you're some kind of wizard. It is worth it though, it's very tasty and filling and has a lot of flavor. My partner actively bribes me to make this because he likes it so much.
The stars next to them note that the recipes are on the cheaper side, because my blog is titled Post Millennial Weirdo for a reason, babes.
Enjoy, folks! I'm going to go back to planning the tattoo I'm getting after this shit is over <3
#recipe#recipe list#recipe recommendation#non pinterest links#food#spoons#vegetarian#dessert#dinner#ok but seriously go eat some brussel sprouts and pumpkin#they're your friends#and yeah my gallbladder can go fuck itself

YOUR OPINION ON PIZZA TOPPINGS <3 and if you dont like pizza... Favourite pasta sauces????
Send me an ask with “your opinion on _______”
Hello, @undeterminedprocrastinator!
Boy, oh boy I can feel all my entire italian family yelling through me at the same time so i will answer both lmao
Ok so pizza toppings, lets start with the controversial one! Pineapples do NOT belong in pizza, americans are just weird. I said what I said, don’t @ me lmao and look, this is coming from someone who eats sweet pizza behind my grandma’s back jswiksiwkaos
So like i’m not exactly traditional with food. I can enjoy a good strawberry and chocolate sweet pizza and i will go a little insane for an apple cinnamon pizza, specially with caramel (again don’t tell my grandma because she would flip lmao) BUT pineapple is a big nono and on savory pizza? Honestly just no bros!
Do what you want of course, I’m not going to fight anyone over it but I will watch with a little judgement LMAO
Now that that’s aside, I tend to like good classic pizza, cheese is in fact necessary for a good pizza and tomato sauce is what makes a pizza truly good - like dough is important sure but dip stale bread in good tomato sauce and that shit will still taste good so yk tomato sauce > dough - which is not what you asked at all but ask me about food and I go off sorry lmao
Anyway! Top toppings so to speak are def tomato (if you consider that a toping because it’s just necessary to me lmao) and sausage (calabrese particularly just <3). If we wanna get fancy i like smt spinach and prosciutto di parma too, but yk only on fancy days, otherwise sausage-cheese-tomato is the regular
Also! Do not come near me with onions as pizza topping i am SO against that, but it is a classic so i have to accept it, i just will NOT eat that shit - like ever lmao
Ok I thing that’s more than enough on pizza toppings lmao, so pasta sauces now!
I love myself some classics: bolognese, bechamel, pesto, marinara... Btw try marinara with pesto if you want to be spiritually transported to an italian grandma’s kitchen. I also love a well made white sauce, but it has to be well made because that one is surprisingly easy to fuck up and make hella bland
My absolute favorite rn is smt i’ve been making with a bechamel base, lots of paprika and a little curry - trust me it will change your life and goes well with everything: chicken, sausage, beef, salmon, mushrooms, everything!!
I am so SO passionate about cooking that i do tend to talk way too much about it when prompted lmao but ask me anything food to cheer me up because i will go 🤩🥰 and talk for hours lmao and like i love cooking and having ppl cook for me, food is so my beloved <3 it’s just how i was raised idk jswiksiwkaos but that’s how it is, if I say that i’ll cook for you i’m literally straight up just saying that I love you <3
So i apologize for the long ass answer but i fr can’t help it ksiwksiskaiksis also, you legit made me order pizza because of how much i talked about it so that will now be my dinner lmao
#everyone who knows me well knows i’m very passionate about cooking so i apologize for how long this is lmao#but food is totally one of my fav love languages like i will like you amd immediatelly scream that i’ll cook for you#like fr the whole middle of the night dancing in the kitchen vibe is my idea of true love happy ending so look#you ask me about food i go OFF on it kaiaksiwkaka#you couldn’t know this but yeah#sorry lmao#also if you can’t tell already i absolutely LOVED answering this!!#thank you so much for the ask sweetie!!#ask game#ask tag#i really need to come up with a cool ask tag soon lmao#cw food#cw food issues#food

tagged by @bardingbeedle the only person who would put up with reading this much about me.
What is the colour of your hairbrush?
I have a buzz cut, I don't have a hair brush anymore.
Are you typically too warm or too cold?
Too warm. I have been warmer than most people my whole life, and I often need to sleep with a fan on.
What were you doing 45 minutes ago?
Working on a sketch for an MTH fill (update from the end of this: I have spent an hour doing this fuckin thing)
What is your favourite candy bar?
Bounty. My favourite candy is Reese’s Pieces but I like a bounty. Or like, and chocolate without fruit in it tbh.
Have you ever been to a professional sports event?
Yes, one of my parents referees Championship Football here in the UK. I have been to a few of his games. I also went to the London 2012 Paralympic closing ceremony, if that counts.
What is the last thing you said out loud?
‘Oh, this will last me a few days’ I was talking to my mother about 1/2 a can of pringles, I was lying.
What is your favourite ice cream?
Vanilla. I am boring. But the best ice cream i’ve had was a cream/milk flavoured gelato in Florence, that shit slapped. I also like cheap strawberry ice cream when no one is trying to put strawberry bits in it.
What was the last thing you had to drink?
Dinner. A spinach, banana, summer fruits and coconut yoghurt smoothie (with extra raspberries). Its my nightly dinner to cheat more veg into my body.
Do you like your wallet?
Very much. It’s about 7-8 years old, it is faded to hell but it has spiderman and a pony ride stony pin
What was the last thing you ate?
See above smoothie comment, but if that doesn't count, a sugar free mint polo.
Did you buy any new clothes last weekend?
Nope. I don't buy as many clothes as I want to, bc mens clothes in larger sizes are hard to find or expensive here.
The last sporting event you watched?
F1, I don't keep up but I watch a little with my dad every now and then.
What is your favourite flavour of popcorn?
BUTTER. They don't really have it here, and I don't go to movies much when in the states. But @festiveferret introduced me to it when we saw Ant-man and the Wasp, and much like poutine and Tim Hortons, I still crave it.
Who is the last person you sent a text message to?
My dad.
Ever go camping?
Yes, I was a Scout. I have done enough camping to not want to do more, it was fun when I wasn't organising it.
Do you take vitamins?
Yes, but not as often as I should, and as much as my mother bothers me too.
Do you go to church every Sunday?
Nope, not even when I considered myself christian. I go only go to church for other peoples events, and I’m an agnostic now.
Do you have a tan?
I cannot tan. I just can't, I burn lobster red in 5 minutes outside without literal sun cream for BABIES
Do you prefer Chinese food or pizza?
Chinese food, It was easily what taught me to like more foods also, I don't eat tomato so I can't have most pizza. I love a good garlic base/bechamel, but you can't really get that here easily (yes yes I could make my own but that ruins half the point of pizza)
Do you drink your soda with a straw?
I don't drink carbonated drinks, because its like drinking pain. The fuck is wrong with all of you.
What colour socks do you usually wear?
Various colours, but I consider red on the left, blue on the right, my lucky socks. No I don't know why, but I take all exams and interviews wearing them. It’s just a thing.
Do you ever drive above the speed limit?
I don't drive, but if I did, No. Theres a lot of questionable laws out there but Traffic laws aren't one of them.
What terrifies you?
Pfft, most things from spiders to rollercoasters. But more seriously, Being shouted at. Shout at me and I start hyperventilating, its a thing. Also not knowing if someone is mad at me. I’m not good at reading people,
Look to your left, what do you see?
The wallet shown earlier, and the sugar free polos mentioned after that.
What chore do you hate?
Vacuuming. It makes everything in my body hurt. I would rather clean toilets.
What do you think of when you hear an Australian accent?
@s-hylor
What’s your favourite soda?
See above. I do not like your pain liquid. Apple juice for life.
Do you go in a fast food place or just hit the drive-thrus?
Either delivery or kiosk, I don't like talking to people where possible, I often need tweaks I don't want to have to remember to repeat.
Who’s the last person you talked to?
@downeyhills
Favourite cut of beef?
I don't generally eat beef, lamb, or most red meats. I love crispy chilly beef, but as anyone can point out its bc your generally don't feel the texture of the beef.
Last song you listened to?
Everybody Wants to Rule the World | Tears for Fears | Pomplamoose
I’m on a Pomplamoose kick, and I also just love this song anyway.
Last book you read?
Understanding Comics (The invisible Art) - Scott McCloud
Favourite day of the week?
Friday nights. The weekend is ahead and @loraneldin and I take to wrangling our beloved usual suspects through another week of Ults Book Club.
Can you say the alphabet backwards?
I can barely say it forwards.
How do you like your coffee?
With milk and sugar, or ultimately, in a Caramel Frappuccino bc I'm a bitch like that.
Favourite pair of shoes?
I have walking boots that don't make my flat ass feet feel like they’re dying. OR my black and green crocs (Fight me, they’re useful).
The time you normally go to sleep?
9-10 is what I'm working on, but I fluctuate depending on if I'm working on something or not.
The time you normally get up?
5-6 If I have a choice in the matter, but often 7-8 if I didn't get to bed at the right time. I’m more about getting the right hours in for my diet than time specifically.
What do you prefer, sunrise or sunsets?
Sunset is the prettiest, but I like to be awake to see the sun rise.
How many blankets on your bed?
One big thick comforter, because that's the uk standard, and I get too hot otherwise.
Describe your kitchen plates
Two types, big wide white ones with a navy blue rim. They are so large I never use them, and little Navy saucer plates I use a lot.
Do you have a favourite alcoholic beverage?
I don't drink, so no. I drink apple juice or Shirley temples when I'm in pubs/bars
Do you play cards?
Sometimes, I like to teach people to play Old Maid. It’s the monopoly of card games.
What colour is your car?
Again, I do not drive.
Can you change a tire?
I am aware I just said I don't have a car, but I do know how to change a tire. Everyone should go learn its pretty simple.
Favourite job you’ve ever had?
I have only had one job really and two job experience jobs. I did experience in a school library for a week and that was v fun and chill. I did all the jobs they had prepared for me in 2 days so I alphabetically reorganised their fiction section for the rest of the week. I LIKE ORDERING.
How did you get your biggest scar?
I no longer have a gallbladder, so I have 3 scars across my torso from that, the biggest right in the middle of my ribs. Non surgical wise I have matching scars on my knees from ripping holes in them when tripping. I have weak ankles and also I got both of those at different times.
What did you do today that made someone else happy?
I gave my spare animal crossing Iguanodon skull to a wicked artist I follow on twitter so he could complete his dino park.

25 kid-friendly breakfasts, lunches, and dinners
Sharing 25 meals that my kids will eat, no matter what. It’s always hard to find kid-friendly recipes and home runs, so I’m sharing the goods in this post!
Raise your hand if you’re SO sick of cooking right now. I’ve been in a cooking funk for pretty much all of ‘Rona (and yes, I’ve complained about it here on the blog quite a bit. I’m sorry for being a big ol’ whiner.). I think with everything else on the list (distance learning, trying to keep P from injuring herself, trying to shuffle in my own work and workouts amidst the madness), cooking just doesn’t feel like this fun leisure activity I used to enjoy so much. It just feels like a means to an end, and the end consists of me cleaning everything up before starting the process all over again. Thankfully, the girls are awesome eaters and are adventurous, so even when I have one of those clean-out-the-fridge nights to see what happens, they’ll try pretty much everything.
Please keep in mind that I’m not an RD, but here are some of the tips for feeding kiddos that I’ve found helpful:
– Always serve at least one thing you know they love. This way, if they’re not a fan of the meal, there’s something else on their plate that they enjoy. I always try to serve each meal with at least one fruit and one veggie so they’re getting in enough nutrients during the day.
– Encourage a polite bite. They don’t have to eat anything they don’t want to eat or try, but we encourage them to take at least one polite bite. Sometimes that means they end up loving it and finding a new fave!
– Respect kiddos’ intuitive eating. They’re really excellent at listening to their bodies; eating when they’re hungry and stopping when they’re full. We don’t tell them they have to eat “x” amount of bites or clean their plates. If they don’t eat much and I know they’re going to be hungry later, I just pop their dinner in the fridge to heat up if they’re begging me for a bar at 9pm.
– Switch up the greens rotation. It can get so easy to fall into the broccoli, green beans, and zucchini sides for a green vegetable but the girls get sick of them. I try to switch it up by picking up different things (like artichokes, Brussels sprouts, stir fries), making chopped salads with our entree, or the Caesar salad kit from Costco. The girls go crazy for it.
For today’s post, I wanted to share some of my go-to recipes that are home runs for the whole family. I feel like these are hard to find, so when you find a good recipe your kids love, you definitely want to keep coming back to it. I’d love to hear any of your kids’ favorite meals, too, if you wouldn’t mind sharing in the comments below. We can all share some ideas and inspiration with each other during a kind of blah cooking time.
25 kid-friendly breakfasts, lunches, and dinners
Breakfast:
French toast with berries and sausage. The kids LOVE French toast. They could probably eat it for every meal and be totally happy. I crack two eggs into a bowl and add a splash of coconut milk creamer or almond milk, some vanilla, lots of cinnamon, and nutmeg. I dip each slice of Dave’s Killer Bread (or brioche if I’m feeling fancy) into the egg mixture and cook on the electric griddle. I add more cinnamon before flipping. The kids have gotten really used to having French toast or pancakes most days of the week since we’ve all been home, but for busy school mornings, I make extra servings over the weekend and freeze them to heat when we’re in a rush.
Chia pudding with banana and peanut butter. This is an awesome make-ahead breakfast. I just add a cup and a half of almond milk to a jar, along with 4 tablespoons of chia seeds, lots of cinnamon, and some maple syrup to sweeten. I stir and let it sit in the fridge overnight. In the morning, I put it into two bowls and top with sliced bananas, peanut butter, cinnamon, and honey.
Avocado toast with a scrambled egg. I make sourdough over the weekends and freeze it to enjoy during the week. In the morning, I pop the bread into the toaster and then top each slice with mashed avocado, sea salt, and lemon juice, and serve with a side of scrambled eggs.
Egg burritos. Another fave on-the-go breakfast. I just scramble 3 eggs on the stovetop and add a handful of shredded cheese to the eggs when they’re done cooking. I spread butter onto warm tortillas, top with eggs, and roll up. If we take them with us in the car, I wrap each burrito in a paper towel and then foil so it stays warm until we leave.
Pancakes (of course) with turkey bacon or scrambled eggs. This is our go-to pancake recipe! Like most things, I make a ton and freeze them.
Smoothies! The girls LOVE smoothies for a quick breakfast or afternoon snack. If I’m making them on the fly, I’ll add almond milk, frozen bananas, frozen fruit, spinach, chia, MCT oil, honey, and peanut butter. Otherwise, they really love the Daily Harvest smoothies (code FITNESSISTA gets you $25 off your first box!).
Lunch:
Bagel with cream cheese, sliced apples, and veggies with hummus.
Turkey sandwich with cheese on Dave’s Killer Bread with Primal Kitchen Ranch dressing and cheddar.
Omelette with cheddar and a side of leftover veggies from dinner the night before, and jelly toast
Pizza on an english muffin. Even better = Papa John’s pizza. Let’s be real here.
Grilled cheese with sliced apples, and veggies with ranch or hummus.
Tuna salad with Simple Mills crackers and sliced avocado. This is my go-to tuna salad recipe.
Nachos!! Chips, top with cheese, melt in the microwave. Add black beans, salsa, guacamole, and boom. Lunch is served.
Dinners:
Egg roll in a bowl
Sushi roll bowl. This is one of our family’s very favorite easy dinners! SO satisfying and quick.
Ina Garten’s lasagna. This one is a bit more labor-intensive but a huge hit. It really is the best lasagna.
Super cheesy chicken enchiladas (I serve these with beans and rice).
Chicken and broccoli casserole with a side salad. <— I mentioned above that the girls LOVE Caesar salads so I’ve been buying the salad kits at Costco. Bonus: it takes 5 minutes to put together.
Steak, roasted asparagus and baked potatoes. The Pilot makes awesome steak on the grill and we all go crazy for it. (I have red meat once every couple of months or so.)
Turkey meatloaf with sweet potato fries and a salad.
Turkey chili with cornbread. I top the chili with cheese, avocado, and lime juice.
Chicken tortilla soup with avocado, lime juice, and sour cream.
This chicken and veggie soup with a piece of sourdough.
Any type of stir fry. I recently got one from Trader Joe’s that had tons of veggies and chickpeas, and sautéed it on the stove with red onion, salt and pepper. I added shrimp to the mixture to cook, and poured some Primal Kitchen teriyaki sauce on top. Everything was served on top of rice (cooked in the Instant Pot). It was awesome!
Easy pasta dish. While Banza pasta boils, I’ll take chicken sausage and sauté it on the stove with garlic, spinach, and add sun-dried tomatoes. When it’s done, I’ll add Banza pasta, some butter, and parmesan. It’s SO easy (like 15 minutes!) and the girls go crazy for it.
Some of their favorite snacks:
Perfect Bars (or any bars really).
Jerky. They especially love these maple jerky sticks.
Any fruit. I try to switch it up each week! We always have bananas, berries, apples, and usually grapes on hand, but I try to get at least one or two different things each week, like cantaloupe, watermelon, pomegranate arils, persimmon, pears, peaches, whatever the market has that looks good.
Applesauce pouches. I get the giant box of organic pouches from Costco.
Hard-boiled eggs.
Energy balls. You can play around with flavor variations depending on what you have in the pantry.
The infamous snack plate. This is a beloved afternoon snack and is like a kids’ version of a charcuterie board. I’l just add a bunch of snacks to one large plate and they’ll share while they play outside or watch a show. It usually has chopped bars, sliced fruit, berries, cheese, jerky, pretzels, trail mix, pickles, whatever I have on hand.
So there ya go! Some of the girls’ very favorite meals. I’d love to hear your family favorites and take all the inspiration I can get! Please share your faves in the comments below.

An Alternative Author Interview:
TCL’s Countdown Questions.
This week I’m featuring author Mary Doria Russell
I was trying to get Fredrik Backman to answer these questions, but his publicist said he didn’t have time. However, she very generously gave me pre-approved widgets to two books on NetGalley instead. One of them was for Mary Doria Russell‘s novel “The Women of the Copper Country.” Well, if you look at my review of that book (in the link here), you’ll understand why I had to ask her to answer my questions, and she was so sweet to answer so quickly with her replies…
If you could visit five (5) places you’ve never been, where would you go and why?
Belfast, Northern Ireland, to visit friends.
Caesarea and Tiberias in northern Israel: setting for my eighth novel
Normandy, to scope out the setting for my ninth novel.
Wales, same reason.
And I’d return to Cuneo in NW Italy for the best cheese and pears on the planet.
Caesarea
Tiberius
Name four (4) foods or dishes that you enjoy so much that they’ve practically become part of your personality.
These are in heavy rotation at our house
My friend Dina’s salad: mixed greens, diced roasted beets, dried cranberries, cheese, diced apple, shredded chicken, and a balsamic vinegar dressing.
Homemade Pizza with a White Sauce: 1 Mama Mary’s Pizza Shell, topped with a cream sauce, and a stir-fried mixture of onion, mushrooms, and spinach, topped with mozz.
Roasted vegetables drizzled with balsamic vinegar reduction, topped with grated romano.
Emergency fall-back meal: Boston Market chicken. They live short, terrible lives, but they’re delicious! And the bones make soup to die for.
There is the past, the present, and the future – if you could choose, which of these three (3) would you prefer to live in, and why?
Definitely NOT the past. Dental care alone…
Maybe two years into the future. I am hoping to see US Marshals show up at Trump Tower with a warrant and cuffs. (TCL: I hear you!)
But really? For me and my husband, the present is pretty damned close to perfect. Wouldn’t trade this time for anything.
Best and worst – you choose which – name two (2) of either your best moments of your life, worst moments of your life, or one of each.
My son’s wedding was a day of shadowless joy. Eight years later, our beloved daughter-in-law announced that she was leaving him for a woman she met at work. That pretty much brackets it.
Name one (1) book you’ve read in the past year (or so) that you wish you had written, and why.
I just read a novel called Country by the Irish author Michael Hughes. It’s a new Iliad, mapping the Troubles of Northern Ireland directly into Homer’s story, and makes the old tale sing again. Wonderful.
Thanks Mary! So… Caesarea and Tiberias, eh? Well, since I live in Israel, I’ve been to both many times. If you ever want some fact-checking about either place, do let me know!
Mary Doria Russell has been called one of the most versatile writers in American literature and one of our greatest contemporary storytellers. Her novels are studied in literature, theology and history courses in colleges and universities, and often chosen as book club and “community read” selections.
Dr. Russell has served as the featured speaker for commencements, library events, volunteer organizations, and educational institutions in over 100 cities, addressing groups from the American Library Association to the Virginia Military Institute. Her guest lectures have proved popular from New Zealand to Germany as well as in the U.S. and Canada.
TCL's Countdown Questions #16: Author Mary Doria Russell @MDoriaRussell. For my #TuesdayBookBlog post, I offer another alternative author interview. An Alternative Author Interview: TCL's Countdown Questions. This week I’m featuring author Mary Doria Russell I was trying to get Fredrik Backman to answer these questions, but his publicist said he didn't have time.

I WENT VEGAN FOR A WEEK: WHAT IT’S REALLY LIKE
Yes, you read that title correctly. The meat and ice cream loving Noor Jawda decided to go vegan for a week. It’s a bit wild to say something like a change in diet shifted my views on many things; but it did. In this post, I will be talking to you very candidly about how it’s really like going vegan; and how it impacted my life in many more ways than one.
To begin, veganism is cutting out any and all products that come from animals. Not only meats, but milk, cheese, eggs, yogurt, and even honey. Sounds extremely daunting and difficult at first; and it is! However, like everything that takes time, it gets easier.
I have been thinking about changing my diet for a while. I have always been somewhat content with my body, but I realized that lately I was gaining more weight than before. I have always been a “thick” person with a large rear end and slim waist. Despite that, my body wasn’t the way I liked it anymore, and I’ve been thinking about a change in lifestyle for a bit of time. I wasn't just unhappy about my body; but about my eating habits, laziness, and all around loss of interest. I was always tired. One night, a friend of mine told me about a documentary on Netflix called “What The Health?”. Bored one night, I decided to cuddle up in bed and watch it. What I saw and learned in this documentary really did change me in ways I did not expect. First of all, I love documentaries; but they often lose my interest very rapidly. This documentary did not. The seemingly short 90-minute documentary captured my attention for the entire time. We have all heard about documentaries where they try and change your mentality by brainwashing you to think certain foods and ways of life are unhealthy. However, this documentary focuses solely on certain foods and what they actually do to your body. For example: a fish fillet has as enough fattening agents as a pork chop. What?! I had no idea that foods we have been told are “healthy” are killing us slowly just the same. I was baffled and confused on how women who consume just one serving of dairy per day have a 49% higher chance of getting cancer…WHAT?! I was perplexed and downright speechless at all the facts I was learning. It was at the conclusion of this life-changing documentary, I decided I was going to try veganism for a week.
The very next day, I told my parents about my plan. My mom found it very funny, while my dad just nodded and bit back a smile. Being middle eastern, our diets are based heavily on meats and natural cheeses. I knew this was not going to be easy. Instead of slowly easing into being vegan, I quit everything cold turkey. My dad gave me a $30 budget, which I didn't realize until I got to the cashier that I actually spent $100 (sorry baba!!). With this money, though, I purchased enough food to last me the entire week, and then some!
On my first day, I made sure I wasn't going to be hungry, eating a good amount of nuts, almond butter, and grains. I made bought some whole grain bagels, and spread vanilla almond butter and an array of nuts and seeds on it. After eating just half the bagel, I was already full! This kept me until dinner, where I made myself an amazing salad filled with greens, beans, and fruits. After just a day, I knew this diet was feasible if one put their mind to it. This week was predicted to be full of starvation, headaches, and me craving and whining about wanting to eat meat; but I was soooo wrong.
This is what I ate for the rest of the week:
Day 2-
Breakfast: Coffee with soy milk
Lunch: Vegan Sushi (Rice, seaweed, cucumber, avocado, carrot, ginger, and mango)
Dinner: Vegan Taco Salad
Day 3-
Breakfast: Coffee with soy milk
Lunch: Avocado Toast with crushed red pepper and olive oil
Dinner: Greek Salad (minus feta cheese)
Day 4-
Breakfast: Coffee with soy milk
Lunch: Vegan Wrap (spinach flour wrap, grilled tofu, carrots, spinach, hummus, black beans)
Dinner: Kale Salad
Day 5-
Breakfast: Coffee with soy milk
Lunch: Pita bread plate with hummus, carrots, and tabouli
Dinner: Roasted Chickpeas with cayenne, olive oil, sumac, and coriander
Day 6-
Breakfast: Orange Juice and whole wheat bagel
Lunch: Greek Salad (minus feta cheese)
Dinner: Vegan Pizza
Day 7-
Breakfast: Flax seed smoothie
Lunch: vegan taco bowl
Dinner: vegan grape leaves with a side of grilled Brussel sprouts
As shown above, this is what I ate for the entire first week. I drank water with each meal (excluding breakfast), and would snack in between my courses with pumpkin seeds and dried cranberries. Once you get in the groove of being vegan, it really is not difficult! When I craved something sweet, I would munch on dates, figs, raisins, or some of my beloved vanilla almond butter!
Don't get the wrong impression, there is nothing I want more than to sink my teeth into a juicy burger; but I think with more time this urge will pass (at least I really freaking hope so). It’s weird to explain, but being vegan was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Every night, I cooked at home. Roasting chick peas, making awesome salads, drinking coffee and tea with soy milk, etc. The list goes on, and so does the number of options you can make. Like me, you may have the misconception that all vegans do is munch on spinach and meditate… so wrong! Just one week of this diet has made me so clear headed in a number of ways that I was not just a mere 7 days ago.
When day 4 of my diet hit, I already started to notice a healthy change in my body. My skin was clearer, my hair was glossier, my stomach a bit flatter, and my mood a lot better…could all of this really be happening just because I chose to cut out everything that came from animals? The answer is simply yes. I told myself I was not going to change anything about my workout routine, skin care usage, or anything else. The only thing I was going to change about myself was the food I was putting into my body. I was shocked. How could only 4 days of being like this already have such a visible appearance on my body? Excited about these results, I was eager to see what the rest of the week would have in store.
When day 7 came along, I couldn't already believe it had been a week. I felt so accomplished that I actually followed through with this challenging promise I had made to myself. Upon weighing myself, I lost 5lbs in 7 days! I stood there and looked at the numbers with shock. I did not expect that going on an all plant-based diet would change me so quickly. How could just 7 days of eating all plant-based foods make me feel like I was a completely new person? The answer, honestly, is really simple. I gave my body everything it was craving all along. Humans are not built to take in copious amounts of meats, cheese, grease, dairy, and many other toxins. Our diets have been compromised by cheap burgers and cheese-stuffed crust pizza. If you really take a step back, are you happy with the way you’re eating? The foods may taste good, but are they doing good? My eyes have opened to this revelation, and to be honest, I don't think I will be going back for a long time.
After a week of what seemed like the impossible, I actually came out a stronger person than I ever have been before. My mind feels clearer, my energy levels have risen, my sense of determination has spiked, and so much more.
I decided to speak on this today because yes, makeup can be fun and exciting, but none of it will look good if you don’t take care of your skin first. A body simply cannot be treated like hell and look fabulous on the outside – at least not for long. Your body is your temple, remember that!
All of this happened because I ate a plant-based diet for 7 days, what more could there be in store? I cannot wait to find out.

The Essential AIP Diet Guide: How to Do It & Heal Yourself
The AIP diet, or autoimmune diet, is a specific way of eating or “way of life” to help individuals heal from autoimmune disease. Here’s all you need to know about an AIP Diet, including the benefits, side effects, food lists, meal ideas and tons of resources to help you get started.
AIP Diet 101
The Autoimmune Protocol, or “AIP Diet,” is a special dietary approach to help people with autoimmune disease, symptoms and/or digestive issues heal their gut—and decrease inflammation.
“Autoimmune” essentially means “attacking self”.
In the case of autoimmune disease, the body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues, leading to the deterioration and in some cases to the destruction of such tissue.
And this is most often attributed to a leaky gut—as your intestinal lining becomes more permeable (less tight) with wear and tear, food particles and ingested toxins easily leak into the bloodstream, causing those antibodies (disease destroying particles) to go to work.
As the antibodies attack the foreign invaders, they also attack your body’s own tissues in the process, leading to inflammation, “flare ups”, achy joints, skin conditions, brain fog, depleted energy, cysts, IBS, heart disease, cancer and more.
In other words: No bueno (no good).
Why the AIP Diet?
Certain “higher inflammatory” and histamine foods generally provoke this situation more, including:
Grains and gluten
Dairy
Beans
Sugar (added) and artificial sugar
Alcohol
Eggs
Nuts and most seeds
Processed foods
Vegetable oils (canola, Crisco, margarine)
Nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes—sweet potatoes ok, peppers, eggplant, paprika, all chili’s including spices)
Enter: The AIP diet—a period of “removing the triggers” and focusing on gut-loving, anti-inflammatory foods to allow the body (and gut) to heal.
How the AIP Diet Works
An Autoimmune Protocol (AIP) diet works to reduce inflammation in the intestines.
Many “clean eating” or elimination diets are not complete enough to remove immune triggers that promote inflammation in the gut.
AIP works to calm inflammation in the gut and also calm inflammation in the body. Although autoimmune disease can never be cured, it can be put into remission by targeting improved gut health. For some, an initial AIP protocol of 6-8 weeks (paired with digestive support like probiotics and enzymes) is all that’s needed to then begin experimenting with some foods within the “avoid” list again to see how the body responds—even on occasion.
For others, it can be years, or even a lifetime from a history of an unhealthy gut that certain foods do provoke an inflammatory response. Every BODY is different and it’s a matter of finding what works for you.
AIP Diet Foods: What to Eat & What to Avoid
Although AIP may sound like a restrictive diet, there are actually hundreds of foods included and ways to “spice” it up. I encourage my clients to eat with the “abundance” mindset. Think: What CAN I eat, instead of what CAN’T I eat? In fact, the “avoid” list is MUCH shorter than the “eat list”
What to Avoid
Eggs
Nuts/Seeds
Grains
Dairy (Except for Grass-fed butter; Ghee; Full-fat grass-fed yogurt with Live Active Cultures Only)
Beans & Legume (Including Peanuts)
Beans
Nightshades (potatoes-sweet potatoes are ok, tomatoes/tomato sauce, eggplants, sweet and hot peppers, cayenne, red pepper, tomatillos, goji berries etc. and spices derived from peppers and paprika)
Alcohol
Fructose consumption in excess of 20-30g per day (1-2 servings/fruit per day)
NSAIDS (like aspirin or ibuprofen)
Artificial sweeteners (yes, all of them, even stevia for right now)
Sugar & added-sugar (Salad dressings, ketchups, frozen dinners—read labels)
Conventional Processed/Packaged Foods
Emulsifiers, thickeners, and other food additives
Alcohol (limit to 1-2 glasses per week)
Coffee (limit to 1 cup or less of high-quality, organic coffee per day)
What to Eat
Grass Fed Meats, Poultry and Seafood
Vegetables (except nightshades)
Fruits (limit to 20-30 grams fructose/day)
Coconut, including coconut oil, manna, creamed coconut, coconut aminos, canned coconut milk, shredded coconut
Fats: olive oil, coconut oil, avocados, lard, bacon fat, ghee (derived from butter, but ok in small doses)
Fermented Foods (coconut yogurt, kombucha, water and coconut kefir, fermented vegetables)
Bone Broth
Herbal Teas
Green Tea
Vinegars: Apple Cider Vinegar, Coconut vinegar, red wine vinegar, balsamic
Natural Sweeteners: occasional and sparse use of honey and maple syrup (1 tsp/day)
Herbs: all fresh and non-seed herbs are allowed (basil tarragon, thyme, mint, oregano, rosemary, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, savory, edible flowers)
Herbs and spices (such as: sea salt, curry, dill, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric, vanilla, onion powder, oregano, garlic, cilantro, bay leaf, basil, chives, peppermint)
Benefits of the AIP Diet
Feeling energetic, less inflamed and experiencing remission of your condition!
Win. Win. Win.
Side Effects of the AIP Diet
As with anything in life, there are “pros” and “cons,” and some cons to be aware of include:
Overthinking your food
Stressing out or fearing how food makes you feel
Isolation (not feeling like you can go out or be with people)
Unwanted weight loss (your body is still healing)
Feeling limited in your food options and choices
Cravings or thinking about binging due to restrictive mindset trap
It’s vital to be aware of your mindset and the psychology of eating when commencing AIP, and remember: It’s not forever.
Beyond the AIP Diet: Is There Anything Else You Should Do?
The AIP Diet goes far beyond the foods you put into your mouth. In fact the actual latin form of the word “diet” means “a way of life.” For the individual with an autoimmune condition, this means your lifestyle also reflects an “autoimmune diet”—or anti-inflammatory—lifestyle.
In fact, considering that 90-95% of all disease is triggered by stress alone, mitigating and addressing stress head on is an essential component of the “healing” process.
AIP Lifestyle “Medicine”
This includes:
Healing Your Gut
An AIP Diet is great, but it is not the end all, be all to healing from autoimmune disease. Gut healing is an ESSENTIAL component to any AIP Diet protocol, and should not be taken lightly. “Intestinal permeability,” or “leaky gut” go hand in hand with autoimmune conditions, and healing and sealing the gut is not a practice of just managing the disease with an AIP diet.
Addressing underlying issues or causes to intestinal permeability and autoimmune disease is essential, including potential testing for:
Food Intolerances/Sensitivities
SIBO
Fungal & Parasitic Infection
Dysbiosis
Organic Acids
Partnering with a functional medicine practitioner or nutritionist skilled in addressing the ROOT CAUSES of disease can be game changing.
Aside from lab testing, supplement protocols, other food avoidances and gut-healing agents may be warranted, including:
Apple Cider Vinegar
Herbs like Dandelion and Milk Thistle
Colostrum
Algae
L-Glutamine
Collagen
Bone Broth
Sleep
7-9 hours per night does a body good—sleep and rest is where anti-inflammatory healing occurs.
Hydration
Aiming for a minimum of half your body weight in ounces per day, and limiting coffee/caffeine to 1 quality cup of organic brew per day or less.
Exercise
Not too much, but not too little. Many people with autoimmune diseases find they feel weak after a bout of dealing with the disease, making exercise more difficult. Others realize their stressful lifestyle itself has been the #1 contributing factor to their disease—over training included. Movement is essential to healing, but a focus on gentleness and truly listening to your body is encouraged. A variety of movement also is beneficial, including: Yoga, walking, swimming, and strength training. No need to train for a marathon or CrossFit back to back 5-7 days per week either. Simply: Have fun with movement AND listen to your body.

AIP Diet FAQs
How long should I do AIP for? When first starting the AIP diet, the “strict” AIP diet is recommended for 30-60 days. This is to allow your gut and body time to heal and detox from any inflammatory foods you’ve been eating, followed by a reintroduction phase, where you may begin to experiment with foods.
How do I do the reintroduction phase? Reintroducing foods after an initial AIP diet is best accomplished by focusing on adding one thing at a time, in 2-7 days chunks. This methodology allows you to see what foods work for you and which ones don’t. For instance, beginning with eggs, you may eat scrambled eggs one day and feel great, but notice your nose is runny or skin is breaking out a few days later. Sometimes foods can have a delayed autoimmune (attack) response time, so by conducting slow reintroductions, you’re able to reintegrate foods appropriately.
Will I ever be able to eat sandwich bread, oatmeal, pizza or ice cream? Foods during a “reintroduction” phase of the AIP diet may very well include some old beloved staples, however, be warned, most people do respond differently to more real foods (say scrambled eggs or almond butter) than they do Subway sandwiches and takeout pizza. In other words, on the “totem pole” of “inflammatory” foods, most processed and refined foods, sugars, hydrogenated oils and gluten-containing foods tend to be MORE INFLAMMATORY than real foods like nuts and eggs, even though nuts and eggs are also not technically “AIP foods.” When reintroducing foods, experiment with what you will, but be warned that most real foods sit well with individuals than not real foods. Let your body be your guide.
I’m going out to eat, what should I order? Many people on the AIP diet feel completely isolated because social life often revolves around food—many inflammatory foods at that. Most restaurants are unaware of AIP Diet triggers, like hydrogenated oils, margarines and gluten-cross contaminating foods (like “gluten-free grains”), and even if a restaurant is gluten-free, it doesn’t mean it’s inflammatory free. That said, you do NOT have to live in a bubble. Share with your waiter that you are highly sensitive to gluten and dairy, or have autoimmune dietary needs from the beginning, and (good) restaurants will often go out of their way to accommodate your needs. As far as ordering goes, you typically have one of two options: (1.) View eating out as more of social experience—rather than strictly an eating experiment. Plan to eat a real meal your body enjoys before or after, and at the restaurant nosh on a real-food appetizer, salad, or smaller portion of a meal (such as shrimp cocktail or ceviche—sans sauce; greens with protein, avocado and squeezed lemon juice; or non-oiled veggies and proteins). You may even opt to bring your own packet of coconut oil, coconut butter or ghee to have some healthy fat to compliment an otherwise boring or dry meal.
I’m overwhelmed! How can I do this?! First things first: Take a deep breath! Just like anything that’s new (and overwhelming at first), it gets easier with time. The best part? The AIP diet is NOT about perfection. As you get more and more familiar with it, you’ll get comfortable with it (and may even learn it becomes more second nature).
