Emma and I have been working SO diligently on his design and story over the course of the last few days ever since we saw Across The Spiderverse. We knew ealry on that we wanted to create another OC x Canon AU and I always feel so honored to get to design Emma’s characters for her. I had such a fantastic time helping bring this guy to life and our collaborations will forever be my favorite thing ever. Let’s just say that I am SO stoked to get draw more of him from now on - as well as further explore his relationship with Miguel as part of our AU.

Dearest Arachnopi enjoyers, may I introduce to you: MATEO O’HARA OCTAVIUS!!

Mateo lives in Nueva York with his Tio Gabriel as his parents died in a deadly fire at Alchemex a year after he was born. To Mateo, his parents Miguel O’Hara and May Octavius live on through photographs and family stories but as he grows up he desperately craves that connection to them. He soon falls upon the theory of the multiverse and being good with tech he begins to prototype a multiverse traveling device in the hopes of being able to find a universe where his parents are alive and in a relationship. In the meantime, he gets bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes Nueva York’s one and only SpiderVen!!

As SpiderVen, Mateo fights crime and tries to control his new powers while simultaneously trying to finish his many tech projects and not raise any red flags to his tio. His “venomous” mode, while very powerful with the poison, fangs, and claws, is very hard for him to control so he can’t rely on it too often. To this, he proposes a small technical update to his suit:

He prototypes portable mechanical actuators, which at the end of the day becomes just as hard to control as his venomous mode. But like his parents, he’s stubborn and will stop at nothing to reach the perfection he knows he can achieve.

After months of work, Mateo gets his dimensional goober functioning and he searches for dimension matches where varients of his parents are together in any form of a relationship. To his surprise there’s only one, a dimensional crossover where his dad is Spider-Man and his mom is Doc Ock. Ignoring that relationships across dimensions should be impossible, Mateo is overjoyed and finally sets off on his mission to meet his parents!

i wrote like 9 pages on my doc ab my spider sona so here’s more of a symbolic piece based on that, as well as reflect on whats been going on during these last few days politics wise, since that’s been on my mind a lot. ill be writing some stuff out to explain it:

both hands have a star in the middle, representing the spider bite and the pose of the hand is their reactions to it. junior (the peter/spider-man of this verse) is more confused/curious as to what happened, while dee (sona) is more shocked/scared/tense. both had their bites in very different situations so that reflects it. the colors of each of their suits (sketches of them will be after this paragraph) are dripping down kind of looking like blood/making their hands look dirty. the colors are meant to be coming from the star, aka the bite, since without it there wouldnt be any ‘spiders’ at all

i wanted to make it seem more like a comic book panel but eh i kind of experimented a bit in the end. a mix of their suit colors is in the long rectangle in the back and behind that the background has ‘with great power, comes great responsibility' over and over again. both of these characters became 'Spider-Man' (or in Spidey's case, took his place) because they felt a need to stand up and take responsibility for their people and community, it was something that come out of a necessity (not really a want but a *need*) to help in the only way they know they can.

(more of a personal opinion/experience) all of this being greatly influenced by my own feelings of wanted to do something to help, because it’s hard (as someone in PR) seeing people fall for the lies and corruption time and time again. it’s a call to action to go out there and fight for the betterment of my Island. so this reflects my opinion on those things

hopefully this explanation made sense- i might take a short week break from posting after this but ill be drawing more in the meantime
