Ok 2025, this is a quality start! Was not expecting to see an adult bolas spider this time of year 😍

She's barely alive, might be at the end of her life, or caught by the recent freeze (they're usually deceased by winter). Sleep well, lovely Lump. 🤎

I've only seen 3 bolas spiders ever.

Fly-fishing is a popular passtime for everyone, from children to senior citizens to spiders. The bolas spider, also known as the angling spider or fishing spider, releases a scent that mimics that of female moths. When male moths investigate, the bolas spider captures it with a special silk thread with a sticky end, called a bolas.

Here’s some I thought of:

The bolas spider “fishes” for moths by swinging around a strand of silk with a sticky substance at the end of it

The pinwheel spider escaped from predators in its desert habitat by pulling in its legs and rolling down sand dunes

Ogre-faced spiders catch insects by making a net of silk and hanging upside down until an insect walks by, at which point it drops down and snatches the insect up in the net

Jumping spiders have the best eyesight of all spiders. They might also have greater intelligence, and I heard on a show that they can dream, but I don’t know for sure if that part is true

All spiders taste with their feet

Could I mayhaps know what's the name of that arachnid field guide you have 0//0 it looks really pretty and I have. A thirst for all arachnid related field guides and biology books, love those critters

The Golden Guide to Spiders and their Kin! There were lots of them, originally made in the 60's or 70's I believe, and they used to still be so common when I was a kid - still in print, and sold for just a couple dollars everywhere - I thought everybody had a few! But now they seem to be forgotten.

I had the spiders one, insects one and "seashores" one (mantis shrimps and nudibranchs!!) before I could even read, just looking at the pictures all day. As I learned to read they were how I learned concepts of taxonomy and ecology, why I knew what a "parasitoid" was in first grade and I'd talk constantly about insects that aren't really RARE, but culturally most people never heard about. These books made things like velvet ants, bolas spiders and hairy millipedes seem to me like knowledge as ordinary as dogs and cats.

That "pests of animals" page in particular is why I knew there were wingless parasitic flies, and I thought that was so cool, I was obsessed with "SHEEP KED" for my entire childhood. This bug that nobody ever heard of when I mentioned it, but was at one time deemed worthy of inclusion in an everyday field guide. And they include "duck louse" as an animal pest you're expected to encounter. Sheep and duck parasites?!.....Oh, right! When these books first published, it was still commonplace for almost everyone to have experience with farm animals. Most people at least had grandparents or aunts and uncles with a farm they might visit and help out on. Of course they would encounter sheep and duck parasites. I think they still publish these, actually, I'm sure I still saw them in Barnes and Noble only a few years ago, but it's remarkable what a different America they were made under. My old copy even recommended DDT to control bed bugs....they did eventually edit that out in newer editions.

Some of their attitudes may be outdated here and there, and they're only intended for North American wildlife, but I think the golden guides might still be perfect introductions to their topics for anyone, anywhere of any age really?? They're such well-balanced overviews so densely packed with just the most essential information about each organism.

....Did people really ever just call tree frogs "hylas?!" It's one of their genus names, but was it also used as a common name anywhere? That's a cute idea. Maybe it was, briefly, so at some point to someone there was a concept of Frog, Toad, and Hyla?

Worst Fear

Summary: His worst fear is realized...

Aleksander was a difficult man to rattle.  Many thought that the Black General was fearless, having seen how he rode into battle, how he eviscerated his enemies, how cold and ruthless he was.  And it was partly true, not much frightened Aleksander, certainly nothing so trivial as the dark or heights or spiders.  But he had one fear, one that kept him up at night, one that would pull him from sleep in a cold sweat.

Losing you, watching you die, your mortality.  That was what terrified Aleksander, the mere thought of losing you.  He had his most skilled oprichniki guarding you, he’d taught you in self defense himself, and you were one of his most powerful Y/G/T.  Even so, he worried.  Especially here, close to the Fjerdan border, Aleksander obsessed over your safety, ensuring your full guard surrounded you, even when you were at his side.

But even Aleksander’s best efforts couldn’t predict a drüskelle attack.  Seven of the Fjerdan mercenaries had snuck up on their camp, attempting to kidnap three of their soldiers.  It quickly became an ugly fight, Inferni flame shooting through the air alongside bullets and bolas.  Your guards had dispersed to aid in the fighting, knowing it was pointless to try to protect you in a situation like this.  Aleksander stuck close to you, flinging out tendrils of shadow to incapacitate the drüskelle.  He would deal with them later, properly.

You fought fiercely, but when you disappeared from his periphery, Aleksander panicked.  “Y/N?” he called, searching the field.  “Y/N!”  His Grisha were fighting well, five of the seven drüskelle having been felled.  Aleksander whirled around, eyes wide, and when he saw you, the breath left his lungs.  You were lying on the ground, your face pale.  There was a bullet resting just over your heart–stopped by your kefta, likely to only leave a bruise–struggling to breathe.

The shot had thrown you to the ground and knocked the wind out of you, but you were alive.  Your kefta had done its job; you’d likely be sore for a while, but you were alive.  Aleksander, though, was looking at you like you’d truly been shot.  “Y/N!”  He knelt at your side, cupping your face.  “Saints, Y/N, you’re alright.  You’re just fine.”  You nodded, wheezing in a breath.  That was the worst of it: not being able to take a complete breath.  It was something you’d just have to wait out until your muscles relaxed.

Aleksander scanned your body, seeing the bullet crumples up, still lodged in your kefta.  He brushed it away, scrutinizing the fabric beneath.  It was a bit singed, definitely in need of a wash, but it was intact.  After a few moments, you managed to take a deep breath, something that made Aleksander’s shoulders relax.  “I’m okay,” you said, and he nodded, pulling you to sit up, then to stand a moment later.

The remaining drüskelle had been either restrained or killed, and Aleksander surveyed the field, silently counting his soldiers.  Everyone was standing, everyone was fine.  Except you, his mind supplied.  You’d been shot.  During your time in the Second Army, you’d been in your fair share of danger; being shot at by a drüskelle was no exception.  It had been a little frightening, yes, but you were alive.

“I’m not scared,” you said, looking at Aleksander.  “But if you are, you can hold my hand.”  You said it to try to lighten the mood, to maybe get a smile out of him.  You hadn’t expected Aleksander to grasp your hand and squeeze, for him to press kisses to your knuckles, for him to draw you into his arms and clutch you to him, arms like vices.  “Sasha,” you breathed, but he didn’t respond, only holding you closer.

After several minutes, he loosened his hold, tipping your chin up so he could look at you.  “I almost lost you,” Aleksander said, and you saw the fear, the sadness, the desperation on his face.”  “I…you got shot, Y/N, and I didn’t stop it.”  You shook your head, taking his hands in yours.  “You didn’t lose me,” you said, thumb running over his knuckles.  “I’m alive, Aleksander, I’m just fine.”

“I saw you get shot,” he said, and his gaze was elsewhere, staring off into space.  You tugged on his hands, leading him back to your tent.  You unfastened your kefta, seeing that the shirt beneath it was pristine, no blood, no wound, no tear in the fabric.  You shifted your shirt from your shoulder, seeing the skin beneath was reddened and blooming a bruise, but intact.  You guided Aleksander’s hand to rest atop that patch of skin, where he could feel your heart thrumming under your ribs.

“I am alive, Aleksander,” you said.  “I am fine, my love.”  Aleksander’s shoulders shuddered, and you realized he was crying.  “I watched my worst fear play out today,” he said.  “My greatest fear, Y/N, is losing you.  And when I saw you on the ground with a bullet on your chest…I thought…”  “Shh,” you soothed, going on your tiptoes and kissing him.  “I am alive, Aleksander, I’m here.  I’ll be sore for a while, I might bruise, but nothing more.  I’m sorry I scared you, my love, but I’m just fine.”

He pulled you into his arms again, tucking your head beneath his chin.  “I love you so much, Y/N,” Aleksander said.  “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”  “Well, you’ll never have to find out,” you said, resting your head on his shoulder.  The image of you being shot would haunt Aleksander’s dreams for the rest of his life, no doubt.  But having you by his side when he woke would help to erase those images.

The single largest section of this project was the monsters. These have no other word to describe them other than monster. Some of them may have fit into other categories, but I like the line-up here. Many of these will be re-appearing in my bestiary series, so don’t feel too bad about no more isometric drawings. I hope everyone’s enjoyed this experiment! 

Pegasus - A horse with wings is a very silly thing is it not. I tried to mix it up by giving it a bird-like color scheme and a head crest to aid in aerodynamics, but it ended up just looking like a mohawk. 

Sea Serpent - Large and eel-like with a red crest out of descriptions of sea serpents from the Northern Sea. 

Chimera - Not much to say other than that I’ve always imagined chimeras as big. Much bigger than a lion, which serves as their base. 

Hydra - Among the biggest monsters in the base roster, alongside the giants and Chimerasaurus. When designing the base where all the heads connect, I wanted to do a hand formation to make it look more unified. 

Warg - Actually the first isometric drawing I did of this entire series. Translating the coloration of grey wolves was challenging at first until I decided to layer them rather than try a more complex method. 

Manticore - Based on the classical description of a manticore with the spiny tail, cinnabar-red fur, and human face. I decided to base it on an Achaemenid Persian to match the chronology. 

Gryphon - More lion than eagle, with a very rich golden color scheme. 

Hippogryph - Owl-like elements to differentiate it from the gryphon. It also has a mix of bird and horse forelimbs. 

Yeti - This fellow is based on Nepalese depictions rather than cryptozoology. He has the color palette of the cave bear posted previously. 

Martian Maneater - The classical giant carnivorous plant. “Martian” because it’s one more planet than Venus (not counting earth). These guys are mobile but can root themselves to deal more damage and slowly regain health. 

Sphinx - The hairdo is Greek to go with the origin and the pelt is partly leopard-inspired. 

Phoenix - I abandoned the flamingo design to emphasize the fire of a phoenix. Obviously its ability allows it to resurrect itself once per battle. 

Unicorn - Based on the small, goat-like unicorns of medieval artwork. 

Gargoyle - Rather than being a statue, the gargoyle petrifies itself, preventing it from flying but massively increasing its defense. 

Hellhound - Based on a Tibetan mastiff because I thought it fit. They look like the kind of dogs which sit outside the gates of Hell to make sure no one leaves. When they’re angry at least. 

Cockatrice - Posted previously, it takes its color scheme from another BangbooDoragon drawing. If you haven't watched him now it's too late. 

Basilisk - In a previous upload I showed the two different basilisk designs. This one is based on the ancient description of a small, crowned snake with uber venom. 

Slime - Just an isometric version of the slime from the first bestiary entry. 

Mimic - The mimic functions exactly like Ditto. It copies the appearance, ability, and actions of any creature on the field on its first turn. But, it retains its health, making high HP monsters weaker and low HP monsters stronger by comparison. It’s just a big ol’ goopy shogghoth of eyes and teeth to show it can transform. 

Giant Spider - Just an isometric version of the big spider from a bestiary entry. Multiple versions of a giant spider are planned. This one, the bolas, has a ranged web ability.
