How does the Hivemind you keep mentioning work/what does it do/what’s it’s purpose? 👁 (eating all of your headcannons up yummystyle

SO!

an Iterator is made up of the shell/environment/the structure and multiple creatures (therefore also of multiple spirits) of varying sentience and consciousness that group together by focusing in on a singular point (traditionally the puppet) to Kind Of pretend but also to genuinely become an individual. aka the funny guys we recognize as Moon, Pebbles, Euros, whichever other Iterator

the creatures individually Can have certain personalities n sapience to them, like Inspectors. some Inspectors in Euros are very cuddly with Sparrows, some just yoink her by the back of the hoodie to ferry her wherever it wants to and some just leave her alone. some creatures, again, like for example neurons, don't have any personalities and are like dubiously alive electric radioactive boxes carrying information. the little spiders in Memory Conflux are like actual spiders

none of them are Quite sapient/sentient enough to qualify for a person, but they are still pieces of one. it's like a jigsaw

the "we" kush happens when they all come a Lil bit loose to the point where logical higher thinking takes a backseat and most of all responses are based around instincts and emotions, that the half formed individual presence of the Iterator can recognize as coming from a certain part of themself. for Iterators that have troubles with emotion-capability like Suns, they become basically completely unresponsive

the Iterators were made like this because with being made out of multiple spirits they are incapable of truly dying and reincarnating (boom, sucky immortality). if one piece (or 375 000 pieces and more) die, the rest is still here and carrying the conjunct individuality

the ideal state of a Hivemind is set as this presence as an Individual, so each time it can, it tries to assert itself as this person they make together. a single neuron is enough to carry this whole idea of individuality and it's torture cuz it desires to Expand and Reach Out to form this person that it has coded into its genome, but it just cannot. it's like mentally choking on something, stuck in a circle of it constantly happening

which is why Moon is still kicking as herself despite losing most of herself and needing to be reset and what that "reformatting" neurons thing she does essentially is. she wipes the neuron's goal to be a Five Pebbles Component and inserts her own "I am Me" indviduality in to expand a little

the Individualities then can have different relationships with their idenity as a Hivemind, from being super attached to all of their components (almost Euros when healthy), to being kinda "eh, whatever, a single neuron means nothin to me" (pre-collapse Moon), "whatever i can always regrow all of these things. it is only tools." (Boreas), to absolutely ignoring it (victims of the cabin fever like Nish n Euros later on)

some Iterators somehow manage to disregard their supposedly encoded goal of being an Individual in favor of being in the "we" mode almost all the time. one of those was actually Spore here <3

some accept being a Hivemind (combined with a lot of machinary) without.. like giving much of a shit about it at all n therefore still refering to themselves with "I" instead of "we". that's the case for Notos

ah. i’m terrified of bugs but i will always kill them on sight! unless it’s big… then i am running and hiding. beetles … moths …. my heart is racing. anything else gets the shoe in .5 seconds !! um ume however. he’s very gentle with them !!! he slips the spider between a sheet of paper and a cup and moves it somewhere safe. he also gives crumbs to ants and all that !! so now, anytime i see a bug, i call him to safely move it somewhere else :’) they are spared only because ume exists !! i make sure to tell them that too. you are only allowed to live bc he is so sweet >:(( remember that !!!!

Animal symbolism is one of the most interesting forms of it for me personally, so I'd really love to learn more about your characters on that matter.

Long one because I can ramble about Solas for hours

🦂 - animal symbolism

Ermines and spiders. 

Ermine: Wealth, inheritance.

Solas inherited both his familiar and the family orchard and winery from his mother. Lady being an ermine is in part because I wanted something that could offer comfort (soft fur), and just kinda constantly be around Solas with him still being able to keep his hands free. So she most often just drapes herself over his shoulder. I also wanted something a little more posh, and whenever I try to picture Solas' mother, it's in the form of her oil painting in his study, which to me looks a lot like Da Vinci's "Lady with an Ermine".

While not associated with ermines in general, Lady is a living symbol of Solas' connection to his mother and him carrying her legacy (quite literally on his shoulders at times).

Spiders: Fear and loss.

They symbolize the goddess he reluctantly pays respect to in order to remain safe, as well as how he lost his last remaining family member. On the day of his 100th birthday (when elves in dnd are generally considered adults) Solas got the news from the servants that his father had been attacked and killed by a drider while traveling.

I'm hoping to share a bit more about Solas' father later this month.

👕 - character design symbolism/inspirations

Oh this one's a doozy.

Solas started out as the main antagonist of a one-shot I DMed, where he tricked the party into investigating the fake haunted house he had built, while telling them that it was real. He just wanted to see if it was authentic enough to trick real adventurers.

(He had all the wards in place and no one should have gotten hurt. How could he have known that the party's barbarian reacts poorly to certain types of magic.)

Anyways, that in mind, I wanted the party to be at least a little bit suspicious of him, but for the wrong reasons. So I leaned as far into the vampire esthetic as I could for him while keeping in mind that he's really just a drow with his own wine business. (Early drafts included Lady as a small white bat. I don't remember why I dropped it.)

He then later became a player character, which is where the main outfit in this piece came into play.

Solas' little haunted house stunt had made one of the party members so angry that they used a favor with Bregan D'aerthe to have him kidnapped and his memories altered so he couldn't remember that he was a wizard. For a month or so, Solas worked as a bartender.

The new outfit is pieced together from the outfit he wore during that, as well as the morning coat he wore the evening he was kidnapped (now shortened slightly for convenience).

@alienturnipp 's redesign kept the same ideas, but added some needed flair<3

Some additional notes:

- The embroidery on Solas' underdark outfit is meant to mimic shapes from the surface (stars), while looking more like spiderwebs, to allow him to fit in back home.

- The sunglasses are enchanted to project a thin layer of night around him, since his intolerance for sunlight is quite severe.

- The locket with some of his mother's hair is an heirloom and a small contingency plan on his mother's end. Just in case Solas ever becomes strong enough to potentially bring her back.

- Solas lost his original spellbook during the kidnapping. The new one is a remodeled copy of a book the party's bard stole from the haunted house and returned to him once he was free to go.

Oh, jeez. Ori, I have. SO MANY. Uhhhhh, buckle up??? 👀 I limited myself to 3 episodes per season but honestly this show has so many fun episodes!!!

Season One

s1ep1: Anne or Beast?/Best Fronds - Episode 1 does SUCH a great job at setting up the story and tone for the show imo! It leaves a lot of things purposefully vague (how did our protag end up in this wacky alternate world? who the hell is in that photograph? etc etc) to reveal as the seasons progress, which I really enjoy! AND you get introduced to the found siblings ever with Anne and Sprig 🐸 I love them so much! While I'm mostly referring to the first part here, Best Fronds does an excellent job at establishing their relationship and their perspective on what friendship means.

s1ep9: Lily Pad Thai/Plantar's Last Stand - Even though it's more of a filler episode, I really love how Lily Pad Thai explores Anne's Thai heritage! Very near and dear to my heart 🥺 Plantar's Last Stand is alright, too, but I much prefer the first half of this episode <3

s1ep20: Reunion - Emotional Damage The Episode. Things get! Dark! Would have reduced me to tears had I not had previous associations with the background music 🥲 Also. Sasha Waybright beloved there are so many things wrong with her <333

Season Two

s2ep6: Marcy at the Gates - Introduction to the third member of my favorite trio! Marcy is very, very adorable and endearing and seeing a reunion that goes more smoothly than. Reunion. Is very sweet 🥰

s2ep10: The Sleepover to End All Sleepovers/Day at the Aquarium - BOTH parts of this episode are so very good and I cannot possibly choose a favorite between them. The girlies getting up to hijinks in a castle late at night and bawling your eyes out when it's your last day in a place you've grown fond of <333

s2ep19: The Dinner/Battle of the Bands - Once again, I literally could not choose even if you held me at gunpoint. The Dinner is very fun and very awkward and it is SO fun to see all these characters finally interact in a (sort of) low-stakes situation. And Battle of the Bands is just plain, cheesy, Disney fun! Heartstomper and No Big Deal my beloveds 💗💙💚

Season Three

s3ep7: Spider Sprig/Oliva & Yunan - OAY. Hoooooo boy. I can not even BEGIN to imagine what it must've been like to watch this live but I hadn't gotten caught up to the release dates until the Christmas special lmao. Emotional Damage The Episode Part Three 👁 (part two was s2's finale, naturally). Everyone in this episode is having a Bad Time. Spider Sprig is. Not a favorite. Sorry.

s3ep11: Commander Anne/Sprivy - Commander Anne is a really neat exploration of Anne and Sasha's relationship as they navigate how to repair some things and also like. Lead the rest of their group without falling apart at the seams. Also the source of a certain meme, thanks to Sasha's gayass blushing 💗 Sprivy is,,, okay? I MUCH prefer the first half of this episode, though.

s3ep17: All In - This episode has everything. Heartwrenching quotes from the protagonists. Mass destruction of property. Kpop. Rupaul (unfortunately). The Photograph. The girls fighting ⚔️ (part ???). Very very fun. I'd also put The Hardest Thing in here but that would be breaking my little self-imposed rules so

And what are some situations you'd like to see him in/react to? Think fanfics: you're not limited by canon, the world is your oyster, you can change whatever you want.

You've opened Pandora's box. I'm putting it all under the cut because it's LONG as hell...and it gets progressively darker as it goes.

These are in the context of "Henry didn't go insane and kill a bunch of people. He either never went to the lab, escaped early, or escaped with El unharmed in 1979":

Henry being good with El/the lab kids and the fact that he looks identical to the jazzercise guy from ST3 are the sources of my "Henry would have been some kind of teacher if he'd had a normal life" headcanon. -

I think he'd like Depeche Mode. They've got his vibes. So do NIN and Korn, but mainly for "lord...give me the strength to channel my anger into this metal music instead of snapping" Henry. -

I absolutely think Henry would have a pet tarantula. Possibly multiple different types of spiders, actually. If we're talking teacher!AU, he'd keep a docile one in his classroom. He'd probably gently threaten Mike with it for laughs. He totally has some fucked up spiders at home, though. Bro was playing with black widows as a kid. He doesn't fear any spiders. I know he's got at least a wolf and a brown recluse. Maybe a Sydney Funnel or Brazilian Wandering spider, too. He just wasn't able to expand his horizons as a child, y'know? -

Henry is both "MCDONALD'S! MCDONALD'S! MCDONALD'S!" and "pulls in the drive-thru, orders one black coffee, and leaves". It depends on who he's with. If he's with El or Will, it's the former. If the rest of the Party is involved, it's likely closer to the latter. -

Henry and Mike, particularly in teacher!AU, are like two cats who have an Understanding of each other but don't necessarily like each other. They tolerate each other. However, and this is based in the way Henry reacts to El lashing out at him about Terry, Henry ends up being one of the few people Mike can lash out at without getting in deep shit for it. - (It's similar to Hopper, but in a less violent way. More of a "Mike can express his hurt/anger through his mean/snarky lines, and instead of shutting him down, Henry engages him the way he does with El regarding Terry: redirection towards the intended target. i.e. El, upset/hurt/verbally lashing out: Mama is dead! Henry, redirecting instead of punishing: And who told you that?) -

It's very easy to get Henry on tangents. He's the epitome of "you sly dog, you got me monologuing". One well-placed question, and he's been completely diverted off topic. Sometimes he inadvertently gets himself off topic. Something tells me that if someone expressed actual interest/actually engaged with him, he'd talk for as long as you let him. Y'know, "quiet kid" shit.

About young Henry and lab Henry, semi-canon:

He and Victor read LOTR/The Hobbit together when Henry was a wee thing. It's their series, ok? They're incredibly Bilbo-Frodo coded in canon (Em has convinced me of this so thoroughly <3), so like...yeah :') -

Henry picked up the Weird-Boy Stare from Victor. Victor: [having a PTSD moment] 👁👁... Henry, impressionable: 👁👁? 👁👁! -

Henry was never close with Virginia, but he was close with Victor before things started to go sideways in Hawkins. When Henry was littler, maybe <10 years old, he'd fall asleep on Victor like Holly does on Ted's lap in ST3. - (By 1979, after 20 years in HNL, nice touches seem like something out of a fairytale. When was the last time someone patted him on the back, brushed his hair out of his face, kissed the top of his head, or squeezed his hand reassuringly? He can't remember. It was sometime before March, 1959. That's all he knows.) -

We don't know where Henry moved from, but I like to think it was Ruth, Nevada. When he got to Indiana, it was a total shock for him. The green, the humidity, the deluges of rain that came with winds strong enough enough to rattle the windows of his house, but especially the winters. That is to say...Henry had never seen so much snow up close before he got to Indiana. He'd only seen it on the mountains. Now he's expected to help his father shovel the 5" of it that they got overnight??? When it's barely 5ºF out??? Ridiculous. - (He'd give anything to be back there: 12 and tiny, wet and miserable and shaking like a leaf. It's been so long. He doesn't remember what frigid winter air feels like. He knows it's different from the air conditioning that seeps into his bones and makes his insides feel like a half-frozen slurry, the artificial cold that turns his fingers corpse-white and cannot be escaped. He knows it was different, he just can't remember what it felt like. The thought fills him with enough frostbitten rage to flood the ocean every time it hits him. He cannot remember what the real world felt like, just the afterimage of it, faded and warped and worn at the corners. He thinks he'd maybe like to freeze to death in the snow. He'd die free, at least.) -

Henry Creel hates the cold, ironically enough. There's something wrong with him. His little body already likes to go cold of its own accord, even on the hottest July days. Winter makes it worse. So much worse. There aren't enough sweaters to keep him warm in that big, drafty house, so he tends to sit close to the fire while Victor reads. - (Before he unlocked the ability to see memories, he never quite understood why his father kept warning him not to get too close to the fire. He gets it now. He finds it funny that his father became so preoccupied with that one instance of danger when there are more dangerous things than fire, and he himself is caught in the web of one of those things. Henry doesn't understand why Victor can't see the greater threat that lurks within the walls of that house. He doesn't think Victor would believe him if he told him the truth. So he says nothing, and shows everything. There are worse fates than fire. He figured that one out by the time he was 12.) -

Henry is shit at chess. Alice wipes the floor with him every time. He only really figured the game out later, when it was the most enjoyable way to pass time in the Rainbow room. - (Although...can it really be considered "figuring the game out" when you're playing against yourself? How about an alternate dimension version of yourself? Henry would play black, and the other boy would play white. He thought it was ironic, being trapped in a meeting point between dimensions with a boy who was convinced he saved him by sparking the cataclysm which stripped both of them of their freedom. "You tricked me," Henry had said, once, after being outmaneuvered during one of their endless rounds of chess. "Tricked you?" Edward had scoffed at him after resetting their tie by cornering his king, "No, Henry. I tried to save you. I would have saved you, if it weren't for Papa." Henry hadn't known what to say. It didn't really matter what he said. He and Edward were separated shortly after, repressor chips put in them both after they'd decided to attempt an escape. They were still children. They couldn't take an entire compliment of guards and orderlies on their own. Henry, in 1979, was still in the dark as to where Edward ended up. He'd find out soon enough, though.) -

I'd like to see the kind of damage Henry could do in a rage room. I think it would be cathartic for him. Let the man beat the shit out of multiple electronics/mirrors.

Henry used to like sweets as a child, Werther's caramels and the like, but after years with Brenner and his candy-baiting...he's not a fan.

Related ^^ When 002 was little, before things had gone so far, he liked to hoard his sweets in his room. It was against the rules because sweets attract bugs, but Henry covered for him. Henry still remembers that little boy, his first successor. 002 used to smile at him in his first few years. He still sees glimpses of that boy, even though the years of abuse have gotten to 002, made him mean. Seeing someone be ruthlessly electrocuted by your shared abuser hits different when you watched them grow up, when you were their handler for over a decade. It hits different when you're the only handler who actually seems to give a flying fuck about the children.

Henry has known El since she was put in the nursery in 1974. Brenner assigned him to that ward without telling him why, and he appreciated the glimpse of sun he got on the walk upstairs, but he figured out why he specifically had been assigned as soon as he saw El. There's some indescribable horror in being able to see your sister's baby pictures reflected in a strange child's face and just knowing.
