Forefront, Part 2. Organic Sculpting.
With my second Forefront, I wanted to learn more about sculpting.
There are many wonderful tutorials on sculpting: From long-term courses, covering various materials on faces, bodies and so on, to short and quick tips and guides on how to make something quick and easy.
In order to get better at shaping the heads and understand the scale and perspective more, I knew I had to learn about speedsculpting, so watched some streams made by Nikolay Naydenov.
youtube
Nikolay is very good at speedsculpting - he has a lot of streams during which he worked on numerous characters and busts, and what is great is that you can always join them and ask some questions in terms of sculpting. His video helped me to understand what brushes to use, to what focus on and how much attention each segment of a work must have.
While this is not a dedicated tutorial about how to sculpt, it is a very useful stream since you can see how he does various characters and learn more from that.
I also enjoy his work on Artstation: Despite the fact that no he works on stylised characters only, he has some realistic models. I really like his high variety of characters, and his work have definitely helped me to understand more on what can I do and how to do it.

The work by Nikolay Naydenov: Rose (2016), Spaceman (2018), and Stylized Cyberpunk girl in Zbrush course (2021)
youtube
I have also followed a video tutorial by Jim Morren (2023) in order to get a crash course on how to do a good head sculpt in a short time duration. While I used Nikolay Naydenov's streams as a way to understand how to use brushes and how much time I should dedicate to each detail, I have used this video to observe how to sculpt a realistic shape and traced the workflow with this video.
While these videos do help me with the current project, I expect to drastically change the way I work in the future, I found an interesting full course on character design on Artstation, where Jared Chavez used industry-standard programs (such as Zbrush, Maya, Substance Painter and more) in order to create a good quality asset.
This is a wonderful course, which I will revisit after the end of this semester project in order to see the mistakes I made, and will take post Masters, in order to make sure that I do everything right in my workflow.
Organic sculpting is an important stage in character development, and while it is possible to avoid it in some specific projects through various ways - it is essential to know how to do it in order to understand how organic forms work.

Spaceship Speedsculpts
I wanted to design a large dropship for my game idea, that is able to carry buildings inspired by the work of Paul Chadeisson mentioned in my previous post.
I found this task quite difficult, particularly starting out. The reason for this was because there are so many ways this can be done. It can be done in photoshop with silhouettes or thumbnails sketches, in Zbrush, 3Dcoat or even Maya.
After trying some quick sketching and not quite being happy with the result, I decided to resort to Zbrush sculpts rather than thumbnails. Here's my result:

These were sculpted in Zbrush and then rendered in Maya/Arnold.
I still wasn't too happy with them, something didn't hit right about them for me, so I wanted to try using 3Dcoat instead and seeing what result I could get, as I felt more experimentation was required.
Here are my 3Dcoat sculpts:

I still felt these were hit and miss, but I found the workflow more promising and compatible with the process I have planned for creating this concept (the Zbrush workflow I use is quite messy).

3D Printing blog post 1
01/11/23
For this week’s project we were tasked with making a model that would be 3D printed using the 3d printers that are on the university campus. I decided for this week I’m going to use Blender to create this model, I chose to continue using Blender to help further develop my skills with the software. This project would also have to be quite small as the 3D printers aren’t very big, unless I wanted to create a bigger model that could be assembled from smaller parts that are printed and put together.
My initial idea was to create a little vehicle, either an original idea or one from a popular franchise. I decided against this but liked the idea of making something from a franchise, I then thought of what I could make from a franchise I enjoy like Star Wars or Halo and had the idea of making an iconic helmet from one of them. I could even follow the helmet path and make something like a knight or Viking helmet. However, I ultimately decided against all of these as I had never 3D printed before so I wasn’t sure what level of complexity I could have before the print would fail. So, I instead looked around for inspiration for a small simple character.
I looked online for ideas and inspiration and wanted to create something stylised, as these often have simpler shapes which would work better with a 3D printer. I also looked around for idea generation in my partners room as she has a variety of objects and decorations with stylised shapes and characteristics and came across this dinosaur plush. I decided to use this as inspiration as it was a perfect example of a stylised simple character that would translate well into a 3D printed model. It was also simple enough for me to make as I had also never attempted a stylised character before.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then looked around for cute stylise dinosaur characters to serve as other references when deciding on a final design.
