Marmosets call one another by name

Enduring vocal labels for individuals may be a window into how humans evolved language

Miniscule monkeys called marmosets give one another individual “names,” researchers report today in Science. After recording chirpy conversations between pairs of marmosets in a captive colony, researchers observed how the animals responded to one another and to playbacks of the recordings, discovering that they use distinct vocalizations known as “phee-calls” to address and communicate with specific individuals. Habitat- Amazon River Basin

Size (Weight/Length)- 400 g; 25 cm

Diet- Sap; Insects; Fruit; Flowers; Amphibians

Cool Facts- The silvery marmoset is walking the fine line of adorable and cursed. Their fur is a brilliant white color, helping them to blend in with their jungle home. When light is reflected off leaves, it turns green and results in the tiny money appearing green. Their long, dark tail helps them to balance on tree branches rather than be prehensile. Silvery marmosets are masters of the deadpan. By lowering their brows and piercing their lips at intruders of their territory, silvery marmosets are able to drive off competitors through sheer ‘I’m done with this’ energy. Of course, if staring doesn’t work, screaming will. The marmosets can get into yelling competitions for prize patches of fruit trees.

Western pygmy marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea)

The two species of pygmy marmoset are the smallest monkeys in the world, weighing in around 3.5 ounces (100g)! The western pygmy is found in a variety of countries in the north of South America, in tropical rainforests and swamps. Like other marmosets they rely on tree gum and sap, but also eat insects and fruits.
