All About MC's Evol and Aether Core Powers

For those curious about the role of MC’s powers and following terms throughout the story, this brief guide is for you! Sprinkled throughout this post, you’ll also find some of my theories on the direction of the story.

Here’s the five terms we go over:

I decided to make this post, especially for myself because when I started diving into lore threads, I realized how lost and rusty I was regarding the main story. It was a given since the last time I played through the older chapters was a year ago.

However, I recently replayed the entire main story so here’s a little refresher on MC’s powers and other important terms I didn't understand immediately! It doesn't include everything but will mention examples for terms that helped me follow the story more easily.

The definitions are taken from in-game/the wiki and then are supplemented with quotes/references/trivia I selected to help me grasp them. This also means this post is chockful of spoilers across the board. If there are any discrepancies, feel free to amend them in the comments (I did my best to be accurate but I am human).

I hope this helps to shed some light and invite more people to dive into the lore!

Resonance Evol noun

1 An Evol that allows the owner to change their frequency to match another life form or object, as well as amplify or suppress another’s Evol

2 An Anhausen class Evol with an undetermined power level wielded by MC

Notes:

An Evol that allows MC to change her frequency to match another's by using the waves generated by her brain’s magnetic field

She can produce repulsive waves against certain people/things to avoid resonating with them

Rafayel explained that MC must open her heart to establish a ‘connection’ and share her power by amplifying or suppressing another's Evol at will 

Xavier stated this is the only Evol that can undo a lock on a Flux Nexus pillar and retrieve a protocore/Aether Core from within (how convenient??)

It also allows MC to resonate with evol imbued items such as Rafayel’s coral stone to draw out Wanderers, or his paintings to inspect them

As of Caleb’s Homecoming Wings story, MC’s Evol remains underdeveloped and suppressed likely due to her Aether Core’s powers being incomplete

She can also return Wanderer Protofields to their original state

MC can even resonate with other peoples dreams:

"It's as if she saw through time and space, through his dreams, to realize he's not the doctor." - Dawnbreaker Zayne

“There were times when I noticed him [Xavier] sleeping. I tried using my Evol to resonate with his dreams. But whenever I do, I get too nervous and fail.” – MC in Xavier’s anecdotes

One cannot simply force a resonance with any Evolver, the process is a two-way street:

Rafayel and Sylus were overly-eager and attempted to resonate with MC within a short time of meeting her but failed because she viewed them as strangers

Out of all the LI’s (besides Caleb), Xavier resonated with MC more easily during their initial encounter against the Luminivores, most likely because his light evol and her aether core powers are similar in form which possibly made it easier for her to match his frequency as both are described as ‘warm glowing light’

Examples of resonating successes/attempts:

Xavier

‘I sigh and place my hand over his [Xavier’s] heart. The waves caused by the resonance Evol ripple from my fingers– the fountain bursts into a shower of dazzling light, countless, tiny droplets scattering. The spectacle reminds me of fireworks as vibrant as an oil painting.’

‘As chaos envelops my vision, only one warm force stays tightly connected with me. It flows steadily from my hand and gradually covers the world in a dazzling light. It overwhelms my senses…”

Zayne

MC: “I’ll help you suppress your Evol first. Tell me the area I should resonate with so you recover faster.”Zayne: “My left shoulder… A little lower…”

Rafayel

“All right, I guess I was wrong. Tapping into the depths of someone’s Evol isn’t easy.”

MC: “Even if you keep holding on to me like this, I can’t resonate with you. It’s not something I can do just on a whim!”

S: “After all that arrogance, it seems you can’t even control your own Evol.”

MC: “... At the very least it doesn’t want to be activated in front of you!”

Caleb

“Resonate with me!” Like a bullet, Caleb leaps after the plummeting Wanderer.

“Caleb!” The roaring hurts my ears as I reach out. I can only catch the wind he stirs. Warmth surges over me like a tidal wave, and I focus my energy on catching Caleb as he’s in freefall. Our resonance creates a large energy shield that manipulates gravity. It halts his descent.

“The only advantage I have is having part of an Aether Core in my heart. Since I can resonate with the energy… I should be able to sense its location.”

Aether Core noun

1 A rare protocore fragment or crystal containing a powerful mysterious energy that can only be wielded by a select few Evolvers

2 A complete Aether Core has a stable aether barrier on its outermost layer, which utilizes the gravitational field to seal and contain all the core's energy, thus ensuring its internal balance and stability

“Their power comes from the very core of the cosmos. If fully awakened, they would spell disaster for the world. I know. You aren’t satisfied with my answer. But there are some truths you have to see and decide for yourself.”

– Xavier explaining Aether Cores to MC

“Rather than what’s already happened, I’m more afraid of what might come in the future. But right now, you terrify me the most. You used the power of the Aether Core this time. I’m worried about what you’ll do next.”

– Xavier to MC after she uses him as a conduit for her powers to feed Starfield Forest

“The Protocore energy in your heart has always been stable. It can form an invisible shield to protect your heart when you’re attacked. You also haven’t become as weak as other patients with Protocore Syndrome. In other words, it’s a power made just for you.”

– Zayne comforting MC about her Aether Core

Notes:

An Aether Core fragment like MC's can appear as a yellow protocore fragment emitting a golden glow

Its power surpasses that of a regular Protocore and attracts anyone aware of their existence

In the present timeline, it was first discovered in MC’s heart by Granny Josephine and the Gaia scientists while experimenting on her as an illegal child experiment

It’s implied that it was not welded to MC’s heart through surgery but rather appeared on its own or chose MC due to her innate strength

MC’s Aether Core power is described as “warm” and appears as a radiant golden light

It has it's own defense mechanism and can create a shield around MC's heart

It especially attracts those affected by Protocore Syndrome who want to devour it's power

When used in combination with the Resonance Evol, MC can sense the location of other Aether Cores within range

At full power, it can power an entire planet for centuries but only temporarily (Philos survived for some time on a past MC’s Aether Core)

According to Xavier, once fully awakened it can also cause mass destruction (hint hint Earth’s downfall and Philos’ 2.0 rise?)

MC can siphon it’s energy, resulting in the crystal vessel breaking after the process of absorption

MC’s aether core provides boundless energy and immortality across time and space

Sylus’ aether core within his eye allows him to see people’s true desires and possibly grants him immortality as well

A modified wanderer wielding a spatium core was able to invade Xavier’s mind and recreate a protofield based on his memories of Starfield Forest (by Soren’s influence)

Human vessels who can control and maintain Aether Core’s power are extremely rare

MC, Sylus, and Kevi are three of them and therefore are sought after by the powers that be (i.e. Ever Group, The Farspace Fleet, Philos Backtrackers, etc)

Other possible vessels:

Xavier who is arguably one of the strongest evolvers was able to act as a conduit for the massive transfer of MC’s aether core power while they were in Starfield Forest

Caleb will soon make this list once Ever fulfills the Fountain of Atei project, since he boasts himself as a better vessel than MC

My personal theory is that only powerful Evolvers who have an indomitable spirit can house and command the ability of an Aether Core

Sylus and MC have strong personalities and are always at the heart of the action

They are known to have endured an unfair amount of suffering throughout their lifetimes that fostered this grit within them

Sylus even considers them to be ‘kindred spirits’ due to all of their similarities and encourages her lust for power regardless of the timeline

Their Aether Core's caused a physical energy link to materialize between both of them, tethering their wrists together like a handcuff

Sylus mentions she’s predestined to commit crimes in the future– my power-hungry villain MC theory is for another time lol 

Kevi, a mere child, was able to withstand the rigorous test Lucius’ forces his experiments to undergo in order to determine if their suitable for 'adoption'

Kevi was also able to easily utilize the spatium core to hide from the fleet

While we don’t know a lot about Kevi, it’s undeniable that he has an intrinsic will to live and promising powers

I don't remember his Evol being mentioned but we'll learn more about him and the experiments in the future

Caleb’s story speaks for itself tbh

Man’s survived how many near death experiences, and endless experiments, lord only knows what tragedy he experienced in his Myth... and will experience in the future

He can literally create black holes and shift the cosmos so I think his powers rival Xavier’s (though I’d like to see Xavi’s powers without his evol suppressing collar on)

Spatium Core noun

1 A rare type of Aether Core capable of influencing space, even creating entirely new spaces

2 Takes on the appearance of a green irregular spherical structure; the core’s shards have partially reassembled, drawn together by some gravitational pull

Notes:

A newly discovered type of Aether Core fragment that emits a faint green glow and grants the owner the power to ‘recreate a plane of existence and overlap it with reality’, essentially creating an illusion

MC describes the energy emanating from the core as gentle waves brimming with power, and a light, warm glow

Kevi was given a fragment of the Spatium Core by his parents to create a hidden pocket of space near his home to hide in from the Fleet

MC was able to sense the energy trail of this Spatium Core when she first searched the area of Kevi’s home due to owning an Aether Core 

Xavier confirmed the Spatium Core’s ability is familiar to people from Philos, such as the ex-Backtracker Soren who used it to lure Xavier into a protofield illusion to drain his powers

It’s important to note that despite being in a different plane, what happens to the victims trapped inside of this spatium-created dimension is very real

When Xavier attacked Soren its implied that Soren took damage outside of the illusion

Xavier’s energy is actually drained by Starfield Forest and Traceback II when he and MC emerge from the illusion; he’s exhausted to the point where he needs to sit down and sleep

By the end of Homecoming Wings, Caleb and by association, the Farspace Fleet, are now the current owners of the center fragment

Caleb’s mission is still to collect all fragments of a Spatium core, while MC’s mission is to retrieve the last remaining fragment from him

With the combined man power of the Farspace Fleet and the Tuum Fleet, Ever will eventually butt heads with the Hunter’s Association for the remaining fragments (or Caleb will use MC to get to the fragments once he discovers the Association is in possession of the rest)

Flux Nexus noun

1 A stone pillar device that captures Metaflux and as a side-effect can serve as a source of fluctuations that attract Wanderers

Notes:

Protocores and Aether Cores can also be stored and retrieved from within the pillar with the use of MC’s resonance evol

In the early story, Xavier and MC discovered Onychinus stored a modified protocore within a flux nexus in attempts to summon a dangerous Wanderer (this was likely a misdirect to paint Sylus as the big bad when in reality it was Ever)

Can serve as a ‘power source’ for crystal-infested human-wanderer hybrids with ‘Protocore Syndrome’

Destroying a flux nexus can result in severing the connection between it and human-wanderer hybrids, a concept similar to cutting off a power generator (Sylus destroyed one when he was chasing someone down in the N109 zone and it resulted in this effect)

Lucius' experiments (Caleb, Viper, Kevi, a mystery young girl) recycled these flux nexus in Skyhaven as a gig for Ever and the Fleet, during their clean-up of failed experiments with protocore syndrome

Flux Stabilizer 2.0 noun

1 A device the size of a bottle cap that regulates the frequency of surrounding Metaflux fluctuations thereby stabilizing the Protofield and reducing the likelihood of Wanderer materialization

2 Also functions similarly to a Spatium Core allowing the user to recreate a plane of existence and overlap it with reality (this function is obviously only available to those who are aware of how to use it such as Philosians like Xavier, Jeremiah, Soren and subsequently Ever Group)

X: “Initial tests show it has a radio frequency chip that can resonate with Metaflux fluctuations.”

MC: “So this little thing is the culprit behind the RMFMA’s malfunction and even the tool Soren used to lure in the Wanderer.”

X: “Yes.”

MC: “Can you also use that device to… recreate a plane of existence and overlap it with reality? You mentioned earlier that this is something only ‘your people’ know about.”

X: “That’s right. But you know I don’t like illusion stuff.”

– MC and Xavier discussing Ever Group’s newest groundbreaking invention

Notes:

The concept of a flux stabilizer first makes an appearance at Akso Hospital early on when MC visited Zayne's office and questions if the device is broken when a Wanderer appears

However, as of the end of Prologue To Tomorrow, a new 2.0 version of the flux stabilizer has been revealed to the public

When Ever broadcasts this new device on television, MC doubts there would be any need for Hunters if they implemented his small device all over the city

MC and her teammates are skeptical of this groundbreaking device that is advertised to help humanity against the Wanderers, of course

Similar to a Flux Nexus, this device can also be used for nefarious means such as to lure Wanderers

I wonder if this device along with the existing flux nexus' are how Ever will summon and revive the moist dangerous Wanderers and cause the fall of Linkon City to push their Philos (2.0?) agenda

After sleeping and watching Caleb’s new trailer, I found something interesting.

Now, correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m pretty sure that’s bone. Specifically, the humerus, elbow joint, and the radius and ulna.

So, Caleb’s arm was severely damaged during the explosion in Chapter 4. And with severe damage comes trauma, surgery, etc. But what interests me most is the nerve damage that comes from such an event.

In Caleb’s Debut Trailer, we see him somewhere in Skyhaven in the Zero Gravity Chamber undergoing his 23rd Neural Control Experiment. In the latest trailer [Caleb: Painful Signal], he says this line: “I barely feel any pain. Unless it’s under repair. But… I… can’t feel you anymore.”

There are two ways to think about this. Theory 1 only happens if Caleb has the bionic arm after the explosion. Theory 2 only happens if Caleb has the bionic arm before the explosion.

Theory One: Caleb has severe nerve damage from the explosion, and the Farspace Fleet somehow saved him (maybe using the missing Spatium Core?) and gave him his bionic arm.

But Caleb is devastated because he can’t feel MC with his arm anymore. Because he can’t feel pain, the Fleet decide to help him by putting him through all these control experiments in order to stimulate neural control

Theory Two: The Farspace Fleet has their eye on Caleb. Gravity Manipulation is a very versatile and powerful Evol, after all. So, they want to use him for their own gains. They do some digging, find out about MC (maybe about her Evol, Aether Core, or records of being experimented on?), and they threaten Caleb with her. They’ll hurt her if he doesn’t obey them. We see whenever Caleb is about to tell MC something huge, a car’s headlights pass by. He’s being watched. So, either willingly or unwillingly, Caleb agrees to be their weapon. They experiment on him, giving him the bionic arm.

When the explosion happens, he’s able to get away. Maybe the missing Spatium Core is in his arm? Does his bionic arm work like a Wanderer, being made and built? We know Spatium Cores can distort space, so maybe that’s how he got out?

I’m not sure. What do you guys think? Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong about anything!

Either way, I’m excited for him to drop so we can learn more!

Caleb's return

Caleb's return has finally been officially teased, but I'm still seeing a lot of folks confused about how he can return. Personally, I think the last chapter of the story sets his return up perfectly and might even suggest why he has been gone so long.

So let's get into it!

(This is going to get fairly long and include a handful of screenshots as supporting evidence, so follow below the cut)

So, in the last chapter, "Prologue to tomorrow - Eye of the Storm", the MC hunts down fragments of an Aether core that can manipulate space, called the Spatium core.

Right after Jenna points out that the center fragment of the Spatium core is still missing, she pulls MC to the side and tells her "there is more" before sending her the "Ever Secret Investigation report" and revealing there is information regarding what happened at Grandma's house in the report. The way Jenna leads into the topic suggests that a Spatium core fragment may have been involved, which could certainly explain how Caleb survived!

In the next scene, MC is outside, it starts raining, and the eye appears in the sky. This time the color of the eye bears a striking resemblance to Caleb's eyes. The MC says her heart responds to that eye. "The CALL I hear becomes clearer." The MC also says that behind the eye lies the power of the aether core.

It's not just the visual resembelance that connects the eye to Caleb. The teaser of Calebs's return being titled "When Home Calls" seems to be a pretty clear callback to that "call" the MC heard from the eye at the end of the last chapter. Especially considering it was the last thing to happen in the story before the update that will bring Caleb's return.

Of course, we dont yet have verification that the eye is connected to Caleb. However, it's noteworthy that the first eye's first appearance (chapter 1, story 9) is when Caleb was checking in on MC. It first starts raining unexpectedly, then Caleb calls, and when they hang up, MC notices the eye outside her window. (Originally, it was assumed by many this eye was related to Sylus, but Sylus uses Mephisto to spy, and since Sylus's release, there has been no indication that the eye is related to him.) Perhaps this is top secret military tech (funded by Ever) Caleb got access to thanks to his work at the DAA.

Now, about the Aether core that the MC sensed beyond the eye...

We don't know for sure whether Caleb was part of the same experiments as the MC, but it seems likely. From the "World Underneath - Sealed in Dust" story we know that MC and Caleb were both taken in by Josephine at the same time after the Chronorift Catastrophe. In her report, Josephine implies that she never planned on kids and took in the MC primarily due to guilt from the experiments. So it is unlikely she would have chosen to take in a random boy for no reason.

Some of the wording in the story imply there were more test subjects. Based on the nature of the project, I would guess the other test subjects are either children that displayed similar conditions/symptoms, or children they placed modified protocore/aether core fragments in attempting to recreate the results they got from the MC, their subject 001.

If we accept that Caleb could have been a test subjects, there is a fair chance he has an Aether core, or something like it.

Now for some theories!

My guess is that Caleb recieved the missing Spatium core fragment during the experiments.

While the Sylus chapters more or less confirmed Ever is ultimately behind the explosion, their motivation is unclear. Were they just tying up loose ends, or were they trying to also trigger the MC's/Caleb's aether cores?

Wether intentional or not, it seems likely Caleb survived the explosion thanks to the Spatium core. Now the real question is, where did it take him? We know that the spatium core has the power to create what are essentially pocket dimensions built from dreams or memories. Could he be trapped there? It could explain why he hasn't returned all this time despite being alive. Will the MC need to go in there to get him out?

What if unlike the space the MC got trapped in with Zayne that was built on his nightmares, Caleb's space is built on his dreams...? And the MC seeing it is the catalyst for their relationship shifting?

Caleb's alive?! What's going on Nika. Someone fill me in on the storyline 😔

Caleb is back after a year of being gone. He's also no longer just a Deepspace Pilot for the DAA he's a Farspace Colonel

MC infiltrates an island in the sky that's known as "Sky Haven" where the DAA is basically the government they run everything up there. MC went there posing as a scout/rookie to investigate an explosion that happened that seemed similar to what happened to her house.

She gets caught (of course) and the colonel (Caleb) takes her to be interrogated and pretty much covers for her during it to get her off the hook so he becomes his "Adjutant" which is like the colonel's right hand. This is so no one in lower ranks and other soldiers won't question her.

While she's in Sky Haven she goes to visit one of the victims who's in the hospital – Mia. Mia is I believe 7 years old and MC runs into Zayne while she's there because this man is in every hospital and medical facility known to man. Mia is a little messed up but she's in a stable condition when MC visits her.

Mia asks if they've found her brother Kevi and unfortunately he's still missing. Mia then gives MC a plushie that has a recording on it of Mia and her brother playing hide n seek and he's hiding in the "secret base". With this information MC goes back to the site where their house is and plays this recording and gets Kevi to come out. He was hiding in some kind of time rift because he has a piece of the "Spatium Aether Core" and the DAA wants to get their hands on this. Mia and Kevi's parents told them to not go with the Farspace soldiers because they can't be trusted so thats why Kevi stayed hidden.

Kevi is in need of medical help though because he's covered in black crystals that will eventually turn him into a monster. MC tells him to stay hidden and conspires with Zayne on how to get him back to Linkon to keep him safe. MC says she'll bring Kevi to him later that night so they can get him out of there. Caleb is a little cray cray though there's some bolts loose in that head.

He catches MC trying to sneak out and he's like "here's some pills to keep you from getting more sick" or something like that I already forgot what he said but he lied about what the pills actually were and since she trusts him (like a dumbass) she takes the pills and lays down to wait for him to leave so she can sneak out after he leaves. (She was caught in the rain the day before this is where we met viper who tried to kill MC and Caleb saved her and threatened Viper to never touch her again also apparently Viper is some kind of science experiment idrk wtf he's supposed to be he's annoying)

He drugged her with sleeping pills.

So she wakes up the next day and finds out the Farspace soldiers found Kevi and have the Spatium Core fragment now. Mia "suddenly" died and her funeral is swiftly taken care of. Kevi is given to "The professor" no we don't know who this man is he's a mysterious character.

MC notices something seems off with Kevi he's not that sad over his sisters death. MC brings these concerns to Caleb and he's basically like "He's a kid they get over stuff faster but i'm here for you MC im always here for you" and damn near shrugs it off like bro thats not regular wtf. Kevi is fixed up crystals removed and has some kind of chip put in his head which controls his mind now. (MC wasn't supposed to know about the chip, but she found out because she secretly visited Kevi and he like damn near started short circuiting)

The DAA is doing some sketchy stuff though. People who've lived in Sky Haven said the farspace soldiers were rarely ever on the ground this long before. It's a recent event that they've started deploying so may soldiers on the ground like this. They've been doing what's known as "Clean Ups" at night. They're killing and disposing of everyone who is turning into monsters. MC found this out because she snuck out (After Caleb locked her in her room lol) to see what they were doing and she injured her knee in the process.

This entire time Caleb is putting on this nice caring front to keep MC calm and safe. If he had it his way he'd lock her up in his home and put a bell on her ass so she can't escape. Caleb is what people thought Sylus would be. Full yandere and MC still trusts him because he's a childhood friend.

Edit: MC is willingly staying with Caleb because she wants to complete her mission and she missed him.

Having achieved the basic result, androids began to think about becoming more unusual, more stylish. Real people, indeed - they're just like us. There are too many non-standard models, especially their hybrids and their altered versions. (Clipping from a fashion magazine; article on unique “fashionable” android models that have a narrower focus) ────────────────────────────────

Molis Lux

One of the most unusual models - I can admit it! The gel used mainly to fill the joints has become this model's “skin”. Although the gel here is just an outer shell, it covers the entire body so abundantly that the internal skeleton and mechanisms are not visible from the outside at all.

Readers ask, “Why don't they have mouths?”. This is a very interesting story! A great many custom models were put into production during the “teenage android fashion rebellion” (ha-ha, I like that unofficial name so much). Unconventionality, flamboyance, brashness and unbelievable solutions! The release of many non-standard models was accompanied by some sort of pathos slogan that carried a certain rebellious meaning. The slogan of this model is “I don't need a mouth to tell about myself”. Translated into calm language, it means something like “I don't even need to talk about myself so you could all know what I'm like.” It's ridiculous, considering they can speak anyway, but the symbolism is really interesting.

The gel color usually matches the iris color of the eyes, and the face and hair are usually a different color because they are not created from the gel. These models are basically a custom created body, not something from mass produced androids, so it's up to the customer to choose the color palette. But at the very beginning of this model's release, a few test androids were created (a few hundred, I think. As with all other models), and in that case the colors were randomized by the software.

Under certain conditions, the gel can go into a soft state where the android themselves (while wearing special gloves!) or someone else can mold the body into whatever they want. Many ML models create clothes for themselves in this way by simply molding them out of their body, and the lack of clothes (molded or real) would not mean that the android is naked. Very handy! The model itself is really one of the most comfortable, I think. (And the mouth can always be made at official accessories and details ComCenter showrooms, don't worry!!!) The part below the ankle and the foot is made of a harder gel, which is a substitute for shoes. It's a bit inconvenient because although such an android can walk around outside without real shoes, it still has to wash their feet every time after going indoors, so many people just wear real shoes or special “socks”. Mea Elections

One of the most modern custom models out there! ME (very symbolic name in abbreviation, by the way) is mostly used by cosplayers either social workers who work with children, or just those who see themselves in this style.

Mobility is not affected at all, despite the unusual limbs and body proportions. The main problem with this model is that all clothes have to be sewn to order or bought in specialized stores for ME models, but there are so many variations of ME that even there you can't always find something for yourself. ────────────────────────────────

Spatium Fuga

One of the oldest representatives of non-standard models! This is the very case when the representatives of the crowd, who were striving for humanoidness, decided to return to their roots and radically strengthen their “roboticism” in a more fantastic style!

This model is also mostly used by cosplayers, but less often, because the model has quite specific details. But among fashion figures, there are a lot of SF representatives! This unusual and mesmerizing look attracts the eye.

The SF line and its hybrids are so diverse that you are unlikely to meet two identical androids of this model. The design is very futuristic and everything is limited only by your imagination! However, remember that it is very expensive, and the unusual limb connectors may tear your clothes. Just a friendly reminder.

Her mind kept repeating the fiery hell even in the ambulance, as the oxygen mask brought her back within the caging walls of the moving vehicle. It replayed as she was discharged and sent back work - her dream job as a protector.

Then Dr. Zayne assured her that time did not erase pain; but then what was she supposed to do with the emptiness in her chest? If the most brilliant doctor she knew was powerless towards grief, then there was no hope. And down she went back home, her lonely appartment. Down she went spiralling when no one could see her strained eyes from looking online for any clues. She tried to stop, but everytime she stared at something for too long, it was almost as if she was there again and the pressure and heat threw her back, away from them.

Her breathing that was quiet, suddenly became irregular, as if the air was filled with smoke again. Her chest hurt and her whole body felt weak; lucklily she was still sitting. She felt heavy tears breaking through; something she was acquainted by now. And she just let it fall.

As soon as her strength came back, something in her brain raised an alert reminding her she had work tomorrow; so, dragging her feet to the bathroom, she sat on the small stool and let the water wash away her skin, her grief; the vanilla scented body wash did not stuck enough in her skin to be relaxing; nor did the air freshner she would spray every day wherever she went around the house. Her fingers worked the product into her skin and scalp, but even after some time, it remained faint. Then, as she slowly turned it off, the weight was still there, clinging to her like ashes to her hair. Looking down to support her weight, her eyes registered the weird dark tentacle thing in the tile, trembling along with the water, yet stuck in the same position; she sensed a prickling in her nose, but no tears this time.

At the hunters office, she wore a loose hair do, hoping no one would notice the changes in her once luscious long hair; and with a bit of makeup, it was as if she had had eight hours of sleep. Her tasks were done with efficiency, numbly typing and walking the halls of the Association. Work distracted her, but she hoped they would assign higher profile missions soon, killing the low levels did not do it for her anymore.

It all changed when Operation Aether Ordeal to investigate the Spatium Core was assigned by Captain Jenna herself. And upon hearing about the similarities of this incident, even the Captain was aware it was something the hunter had no choice but to dig deeper.

All those visions, the explosion, the expanding hell, the once lively home and the two most important people to her consumed by it, all began to dwindle the moment she stepped onto the architectural dreamscape that was Skyhaven; and she found more than her heart could have hoped for.

The rookie could not believe her senses when she felt that pull, trapping her in place like a certain someone would when she was looking to put herself in danger. She still could not believe it when she heard the voice that sounded exactly like his voice. And finally, she could not believe her eyes when he announced the test. ‘You must not lie’, that voice kept repeating as saliva kept pooling in her mouth, as it had become impossible to swallow; yet, she did what the voice instructed. He must have rigged the whole thing or she was the best liar to have ever lived.

What should she do, throw the necklace at him, scream from the top of her lungs ‘stupid, dummy. I hate you, Caleb!’, or simply take him in her arms like she has been dreaming all those exhausting months? She chose the latter, and his vanilla scent lingered just below the iron. The loveliest scent in this whole world finally allowed her mind to rest and she held his eyes in hers, smiling like he was the only fountain that could quench her thrist. Riding shotgun, the whole of Skyhaven passed as a blur, her eyes were glued to his face, now somewhat paler, in the place of that warm summer skin that she adored; but it did not matter, Caleb was back.

Her eyes were still devouted as he showed his house; and she chose a random room that seemed cozier than the rest. ‘His room’, the words flashed in her mind first, then became branded in her memory; yet, the house did not smell like him, it did not have the warmth of Caleb’s presence. She hated it here, but it would need to do, because now he was with her again.

She went from happy he was back, to distrustful of his new role - never of him, no. She was with Caleb through and through. But the Fleet and this Lucius man, she did not trust them at all.

And then he told her he would build a maze to keep her safe; and his scent had been strong as ever. His eyes had a manic quality, as if Caleb was running a fever, and she was scared. Was he the sweet friend from her childhood, or had he always been this ‘wolf’, this alluring, terrifying, teeth-baring wolf?

That was her rational mind; in contrast, something deeper in her desperation wanted to reach out and pull him closer so she could feel that scent. A depraved thought, indeed; but she wanted it. She wanted it so bad. Have his vanilla scent all over her skin. Taste it with every nerve in her body. Yet, she did not. She fought back; she hurt him, telling him all those things.

Yet, whenever he left, she felt like those times after the explosion: utterly alone and desperate for an ounce of him. All her vanilla scented candles had stayed back home and his shower products did not smell like that. She questioned whether the vanilla was a story her mind told her senses. Until she found one source of it, and confirmed she was not insane. Something that had gone unnoticed was laying amidst recently ironed clothes. And with each step, the scent got stronger and more enticing. When she was a touch away from the neat pile, something akin to blue, latent shame grew. There were his well-kept underwear, boxers, all black.

She remembered the times Caleb cooked and how it was impossible to resist taking at least one bite as he put his heart into the steamy bowl of soup. This felt even harder to resist; her hands moved, and she glued them back to her side, nevertheless, something in her desired to reach for it. The scent calling to her. ‘I can’t. I can’t. I can’t’, yet, her instincts won and she touched the soft fabric; it was light and good for a man whose routine was intense. But the best part was that it smelled like vanilla. She inhaled softly at first, letting the sweet notes remind her of happier times; then deeply, and her grief was back. She cried. Rubbing her nose and cheeks on the front part, enjoying the scent surrounding her senses. There was nothing besides him now.

She was not thinking, she did not know when she fell asleep. All she knew is that her dreams were sweet like vanilla. Too sweet perhaps. They were somewhere nice, safe. He embraced her nicely, safely. And when morning came, she no longer had the scent to greet her. Not even Caleb was there... maybe the whole thing had been a dream. The items were still there, in the same neatly folded pile. A dream. Perhaps she was losing it.

Her screaming broke the silence, “I don’t need you”, and suddenly he wore that deadly betrayed look in his eyes.

“You. Don’t. Need. Me?” Each wavering word had weight as his steps got his dangerous scent closer to her. His arms trapped her at the right side, his breath was right at her face as he bent to look deeply into her eyes, “then...”, he reached for the pocket of his coat, “care to explain why my clean underwear was streaky, almost as if someone had been crying on them?”

Her face was so hot, she felt like fainting. “I don’t know anything”, she muttered, nearly bumping his chin as she lowered her gaze.

Caleb scoffed, “what was that?”

The cornered woman repeated, still looking down.

“Oh, yeah?” he made her look up with the same hand he was holding the piece of clothing, “then you won’t mind if I throw them away...”

Lonely. Death. No vanilla. No Caleb.

In a pathetic act, she whined, throwing herself against his chest, “no. You can’t do that. You can’t take more from me!”

His tone became cold as he repeated his question; and for a moment, she glimpsed the hardened Colonel again, trying to get a confession out of her lips. She caved in, no lies this time "they remind me of Caleb! They remind me of safety! They remind me of everything I had!" Words spilled out of control.

Caleb’s now empty hand touched her chin, raising her head. A cruel smile of victory resting on his narrow lips, as his gloved fingers wiped the one tear that had escaped from her, “you know I can’t deny you a thing”; and then he attached the underwear to the hem of her pajama pants, “keep it for me, yeah?”

It became a game, she would find creative ways to hide his underwear, and would send him a picture, 'guess', was the only text. Once it was under her pillow, next inside her purse in an embroided pouch with a cute apple. He never guessed correctly, and his typing sometimes would be erratic as she told him he got it wrong and revealed the true location. It was more than a game, it was comfort when Caleb was away.

And by now, she had become accustomed to his presence in her life again, his vanilla scent in every corner of that room when she visited Skyhaven. But could she ask for more? And would he be willing to give?

Drunk on him. She was completely inebriated as her cheeks inhaled his vanilla scent, fresh from his body; her face dragging slowly across his sex. She had completely lost it; they had kissed no more than a week ago, and here she was knees on the carpet, hands on his round thighs and face buried in him. Caleb wore a confident smirk, not at all flustered, “missed me?”

He kept teasing her all week, kidnapping his pieces of delight and sending photos back of their hiding spot. She played along, and like him never got the answer right. Until she broke and demanded he offered compensation. Caleb had just arrived from a specially tiring day at the base, when he was forcefully pulled to the middle of the living room by his tie; her eyes threatening his existence; arms crossed to emphasize her point. His eyes seemed to understand her murderous intentions quickly. “So?” She asked barely containing her anger; as he slowly unfastened his belt and let his pants down, his voice got sweeter than ever “come, then. Take it from the source.”

And she did. Greedily, she felt his heat against her lips, her nose, her cheeks. She did not touch him with her hands, she wanted to feel him. Truly feel his scent. And it was stronger than just that cold piece of delight. This was Caleb’s true scent, hot, strong, deliciously vanilla and sense overloading.

His façade broke when she licked the length of his clothed member, his hands covered his mouth; now he began to feel a bit hot from the heavy coat, yet he could not bring himself to remove it. He kept staring down.

And she licked again.

“Mmm, pip-squeak”, she heard from him. And decided to lick until she felt an altogether different taste. It was rich and mouthwatering. Like an explosion of notes in her mouth. She felt all tingly, like every nerve in her body was screaming 'yes'. She was not bothered by her own wetness; all she wanted was to enjoy this moment with no distractions.

“The taste’s even better”, she said low, the edge of her mouth and chin glistening.

This time, Caleb covered his eyes, cheeks flushed, lips parted. He had been keenly aware of his trembling legs; he had tried to keep them apart and even used his evol in the task. She had not touched him, she had only used her determined tongue; and he had fallen, fallen harder than he had ever been able to achieve by himself.

“Can I keep this one?” The woman was out of breath from the pleasure she had felt.

As he moved his hips up, her quick, quivering fingers lowered them. She held it close to her as if it was the most precious gift. He could not help but laugh, “will that do, pip-squeak?”

The woman nodded and kissed him like a dragged confirmation, impriting his scent farther in her tongue. It was the first time he experienced his own taste. It was not half bad, but his mind wandered to hers. What would she taste like?

Details:

Viper is a recurring character throughout the "Homecoming Wings" section of the Main Story. When he introduces himself to the protagonist, he refers to himself as "Caleb'sss friend" and that she can call him "Viper". Ironically, whenever Caleb and Viper interact, they're always antagonizing each other in some way. From what we've seen, Viper favors verbal attacks and/or insults while Caleb relies on a combination of Evol and physical strength.

To Viper, Caleb's constant need to protect the protagonist is obsessive and overprotective (hence the nickname "Mr. Overprotective"). In contrast, Viper seems to find entertainment by merely toying with the protagonist since the Professor had apparently said it wasn't "time to go after her yet". He seems offended by the idea that the protagonist is the "perfect vessel", saying she "doesn't even look as good as us unfinished products".

When Viper appears at Mia's funeral, he infers that Kevi was rescued by the Fleet because "he hasss sssomething more valuable" than the Aether Core fragment/Spatium Core. When she asks if what happened to Kevi was caused by his ability to use an Aether Core, Viper tells her not to be "too sssupicious". But since he says "aeeing her manipulated like this" was annoying, he ultimately helps her figure out what had been done to Kevi.

Physical Characteristics:

Other than his greenish-gray hair (said to be loosely tied), many of Viper's physical characteristics are either distinctly snake-like/snake-themed or suggest he is technologically enhanced in some way. I've included lists of these traits below.

Though it has yet to be clarified if he is an android/humanoid robot or a cyborg/cybernetically enhanced organism, various Main Story scenes suggest that Viper is able to feel physical pain.

Snake-like/Snake-themed Characteristics:

Gray eyes with white slit pupils.

A forked tongue that darts in and out of his mouth

His pronunciation of "s" is consistently prolonged, reminiscent of a snake's hiss

In combat, the protagonist describes him as "tough and quick" adversary who moves "like a grayish-green serpent"

Captivating Moment and Operation Aether Ordeal

Caleb's Lucid Dreams myth being more or less in the main story timeline (more like a Bond than the other Myths) prompted me to go back and watch Captivating Moment again, and I realized that it's pretty explicitly set during Project Aether Ordeal (i.e. during the 3-4 months after MC is first in the N109 Zone) which is actually really interesting and puts the rest of MC and Sylus's "early in the relationship" memories into a pretty specific place in the timeline.

This is sort of a ramble but with lots of citations so I hope it'll be interesting to the other folks enjoying the lore and the meta aspect of the storytelling!

Spoilers below the cut! Sorry if it doesn't work on mobile, I only halfway understand how mobile Tumblr decides when to use/not use the "keep reading" cut 😅

Disclaimer 1: First off I want to say that an exact timeline is sort of not the point of LaDS, they intentionally give themselves room to not have to manage continuity perfectly, but I enjoy putting things into context.

Disclaimer 2: As a writer myself, I feel comfortable speculating on things that happen "behind the scenes" with creating LaDS, since I've worked myself into some continuity errors and ret-cons of my own. You can decide how plausible or not what I'm suggesting seems.

Okay back to the lore dump.

We still don't know the exact timeline after Homecoming Wings, but the writers usually give themselves some flexibility to work with, so I'm not anticipating us finding out that something happened immediately after Homecoming Wings. At that point, we're still sort of in Operation Aether Ordeal, though all parts of the Spatium Core have at least been spotted. (I need to replay the second half of Homecoming Wings, I forget exactly where that left off.)

Notably, in Captivating Moment, MC mentions she's on an 'Aether Core' mission. When the myth dropped concurrent with Sylus's release in July, we wouldn't start getting content about Operation Aether Ordeal until October. So if you watched the myth early, you could kind of assume that MC is chasing a lead about her own Aether Core--but that's pretty much resolved at the end of Long Awaited Revelry. Rather, I think this was intentionally a reference to Operation Aether Ordeal, though vague enough to not spoil anything.

One reason this is likely an intended reference (but ends up creating a continuity error) is that the season is given as spring. I'll have to make a longer post about it, but before Prologue to Tomorrow, the most natural time for Operation Aether Ideal would be spring 2049. This assumes that only about a month goes by between MC becoming a Hunter and the Bloomshore District Explosion, which is a natural assumption for an otherwise unspecified time skip, and the early chapters of Under Twilight give summery vibes, though the season isn't specified.

However, Prologue to tomorrow's Xavier branch, Voyage of the Outcast, goes and sets itself in autumn. Since it's explicitly two months after Long Awaited Revelry, then LAR and Captivating Moment must happen circa July/August, which is solidly summer, not spring.

I think this is specifically why the new Serpent's Cast World Underneath story says that snow is on the ground during the Bloomshore District Explosion--the writers realized they needed to extend one of their unspecified time skips, and the best candidate was the time skip between Talented Hunter and Under Twilight. By adding a 6mo time skip there, then Voyage of the Outcast is able to correctly happen in autumn.

But the consequence of this is that Captivating Moment, which was already published, now represents a continuity error by stating the season to be spring when it should be late summer or autumn.

From a fanfic/headcannon perspective this is actually really easy to solve--the conversation between MC and Sylus about plants (and how little he sees them in the N109 Zone) works just as well with autumn leaves or late-summer vibrance as it does with spring blooms.

Not sure how interesting this will be for others, but as someone who's kind of driving myself crazy trying to sketch out the main story's timeline, I felt a little less insane when I started to see the evidence that the writers also sort of lost track of things and went back to ret-con them. 😅

The time skip being lengthened has some other interesting consequences--MC now has known/reconnected with Xavier, Zayne, and Rafayel for over a year by the time she meets Sylus. That's interesting context to think about for their relationship at the time of Prologue to Tomorrow and Homecoming Wings. I think a lot about Zayne's comment in Homecoming Wings that MC "needs something other than lukewarm"--i.e. he realizes he's not being clear enough that he wants to spend more time with her, and he needs to be bolder. It pushes Zayne memories like Everlasting Wish well after late 2049, which isn't particularly consequential other than that it assures my heart that the world won't like, entirely abruptly explode? probably?

Again I want to emphasize that fitting the Memoria into the main story timeline is kind of missing the point, since they're meant to be branching timelines with room for "what if this relationship went after, what if that crisis didn't happen" etc. It's meant for each player to be able to string together their own continuity that makes the most sense to them--which for me personally is enjoying the challenge of trying to fit everything into the context of the main story. 😅

Since it's rumored that we're getting a Sylus main story branch soon, I'm really curious how much they'll reference, where they're going to go with it, the relationship stage it'll represent, etc.

THOUGHTS ON CALEB

We have him for a while now and I've been thinking…

The memories aren't release in chronological order but with Caleb I think we have a detail that the others LIs doesn't have: the bionic arm. I wonder if Infold will divide the memories in before and after it like we see in Painful Signal.

First let's understand Caleb as a person, we now know that he is the typical popular guy wherever he goes, smart good looking and social but he doesn't care about reputation, he focus on being a reliable person and have the skills necessary to escape whatever traumatized him and MC, keeping they both safe from what hurt them. His mentality is not great for someone perceived as perfect, never been and we can't pinpoint when this started but we know that he was an experiment when he was 9 or 10, maybe Josephine took him later? If the nickname Donor 002 appears in his anecdote refers to him, maybe it is possible that he was left in the lab, there is no information about his parents and if they were alive at the time. MC entering his life is also unknown but the fact that he knows she forgets, and remembers her every time makes it possible that his protectiness comes from this, and the Chip makes it 100x worse/intense. He struggles with nightmares to a point he can't even sleep, aside from a candy and soda it doesn't seem he eats like never, he is a great cook but doesn't seem like he eats, he is a buffy dude he should be eating a lot. If he goes through the day only eating Apples....

He is lonely, doesn't share anything with anyone and it's not a liked figure in the Fleet despite him being a Colonel. He knows he is just a weapon and plans to stay like this, if he can make EVER only focus on him, even if it means to be hated by everyone he will do it. But I wonder how much he knows about MC's Core and if the Spatium Core will be used to modify him. At the same time he is ready to drop everything and fly her anywhere, maybe even another planet, if she admits to only wanting to be with him!

His relationship with MC is complex, he is a complex person as much as her and with so many secrets. but one of the things he is sure about is his feelings, through the cards he is constantly saying he knows what he is doing and he is sure about his feelings but he struggles to make the move they both are waiting for (kiss counting: 2, throughout the memories we have available). It hurts seem him stuck and unable to make a move or even address feelings when they clearly have feeling for each other!

The nickname doesn't help, I know it's from a lovely place but he keeps calling Her pipsqueak (it's cute, I'll admite but he need to let it go of this name) because MC thinks he still sees her as a child, unless he changes the nickname or stop calling her that and acknowledge her as a adult she won't step forward and won't allow him to approach either. Maybe he can't let go because he doesn't want to walk away from the time he perceives as the best of their lives, when he "could" protect her if anything happens. Who knows...

Unfortunately here is where we in the Global side will loose some nuances about Caleb and MC, since English doesn't have a direct translations or transliterations for the world Gege BUT we have a reference that allow us to understand what it means. Gege (Mandarim) is translated as older guy in a respectful way and flattering way that also happens to be a form to call your older male sibling, the same works for Oppa (Korean) and Nii-chan (Japanese) but what is it for? So, we know that in Asian languages there is a word called Honorific, a noun that is used to imply and express respect for another person. It's common to refer to someone they know as Gege (older guy friend) or Jiejie (older girl friend) and it's doesn't mean the one expressing and the one receiving are related by blood, in fact it's common to address anyone older like this because it's a respectful way to refer to them. . Unlike us that don't speak Mandarin, we only use honorific in a formal environment rather than day to day life, for us using the person name in any occasion is enough.

The Colonel is a persona, he need this hat to achieve his goals! He is willing to became the villain and do anything he judges necessary to protect her, doesn't matter if she agree or not he is ok if it's to keep her safe. Kevin, Viper, Professor Lucien and the mysterious girl (Evil twin? Where this girl come from?) all know he is protecting her so maybe MC isn't the only target EVER has eyes on… unlikely. Maybe they're waiting to get something or someone (I'm deeply worried about Sylus after knowing they're after the Fountain of Atei and they're heading to the N109 zone)

Skyhaven isn't the incredible place that seemed to be, it's dangerous and EVER controls the place, the Torino Chip seems more than just a modification or enhancement, could it be Lemurian technology or something that Onych was working on, Protocore doesn't seem to be involved in this particularly.
