BIG BIG rainbows on "Sparkle motion" WLED driver board 🌈💡
We got our WLED-friend PCBs
https://blog.adafruit.com/2024/12/02/leftovers-layout-wled-board-revision-a-completed/
and are testing it with various LED grids. First, we tried out a 16x16 NeoPixel grid that runs on 5V. Since that worked well, we're now onto a much bigger 60 x 60 grid - that's 3,600 LEDs! These are some NeoPixel pebble
netting samples we're also testing at the same time; each one has 20 x 60 pixels and uses 12V power, so it's a good test of the DC pass-through for higher voltages. Since WLED has a limit of 2000 pixels per output, this demo uses the three output ports that are then 'merged' together in memory to make a single large grid. We have more to test soon: the onboard IR receiver, USB PD, I2S microphone, extra I/O pins, and I2C, so watch for those videos as they come together. Coming soon -

Hi Goose I was wondering if you'd be able to share any advice on guaging interest for fandom prompt memes. There's Only 1 You and Time Begins on Opening Day have me thinking about possibly setting up team specific prompt memes, but I've never done it before and don't know where to start
OH good question.
I think a better example than o1u and Time Begins would be my actual team specific prompt memes - @sharkuda-prompt-meme and @seattlekrakenpromptmeme. Krakene prompt meme I started in the team's first year and mostly how I set it up is I went into my friend's discord server where I knew there were a bunch of Kraken fans and went prompt meme y/n? And they said yes so I did it, and then I did it for three more years. (and tbh this is probably the last year and I will see if I can hand it off to someone more active in Kraken fandom because I have kind of cooled on the team (not like, active beef. just sharkspilled). The very rich and active Kraken fandom deserves someone way more committed to sparklemotion.) but tl;dr that one was just asking some pals if they'd play along.
@sharkuda-prompt-meme... some of my dear friends were Sharks fanfic sickos and I said haha what if 👉👈 and I don't actually recall if anyone actually answered but I did it anyway. That one I actually kind of soft-launched the first year as kind of a week-long fest of, here are a bunch of tropes, make them about the Sharks. Which got some really really really cool fills but that in particular is a difficult format to run every year, so the next year I did a prompt meme which got way more traction. and then it turned out everyone in sharks fandom is pathological so I adjusted for the next year to run all year. This is also probably the last year I run it, or at least run it solo bc I'm TIRED but it's been a joy for thee years.
I think for both of these, it helped to have a couple of sickos who wrote for the same teams, and to be able to be like hey crew. would you play in the sandbox with me. and when they said yeah maybe, just promoing the hell out of it. I think one thing people don't realize with team-specific prompt memes is that first year, and esp with small, less popular teams, you have to do a TON of promo and basically just never shut up about it for a month straight, because team fandoms tends to be so scattered across so many tags/discord servers/sites.
A lot of this honestly took a ton of trial error, I have some prompt memes that I ran for a couple years and consigned to the dust bin and one prompt meme that had gorgeous gorgeous fills but was such a headache that I will never ever ever run it again. Some of this is just throwing stuff at a wall and seeing what sticks honestly, and then trying again next year if you think it was worth the effort.
I will also admit that having a pretty large follower list helps a lot with the promo and not shutting up part, which I recognize not everyone is lucky (cursed?) enough to have. There is some organic growth that happens as word spreads but I'm fairly lucky in that at this point if I just say HEY does anyone want to play paperdolls, there's usually one or two people who say yes.
It also sometimes does help to just run a poll on your blog and see who shows up and how many. I did that with Kraken prompt meme this year and told myself if I got at least 8 yeses, I would set it up - did, and then did. Polls are an easy way to gauge interest, because quite frequently, esp in the beginning when I started running these, no one would respond if I said hey send an ask :3 but then I'd get like 20-30 votes on a poll about whether people are interested.
idk if ANY of that is helpful, but that's kind of what I did for those two. Happy to answer more questions if you have them!!

💘 Is there any posted fic you'd want to rework/re-edit/rewrite?
No. A long, long time ago, I decided to view every story I wrote as a snapshot of where I was interest-wise, talent-wise, and skill-wise, so I could look back at what I've made to see how I've changed. There's also a layer of self-preservation to this choice: I'm such a slow writer that pulling and reworking stories would eat all my time; the hunt for perfection in a single story would cause my creativity to starve.
🍭 Why did you start writing?
Like so many people, I felt like I had to. I've always been like this. I couldn't not write.
🎙️ What one of your fics would like someone to make a podfic of?
When He Comes… would be an interesting one because it has bigger cast of characters, but honestly, podfic of your fic is such an honour that the best podfic anyone could make of my fic is the one they want.
💌 Share something with us about an up and coming WIP that has you excited!
Regardless of how much I cry about not knowing what the hell I'm doing, I am committed to the sparklemotion that is a/b/o witcher fic of my dreams. I get to write about seasons and scent kink and what you can and can't change about yourself, and I am SO excited about that.
realer than real fic writer questions

Festival of Lights… A 'USB Stick' Sparkle Motion WLED driver ✨💡🔌🌟
To wrap up this year, we're doing 8 days (maybe!) of light-filled designs. We started with the Sparkle Motion Mini
which can drive thousands of shimmering RGB LEDs. Next, we were going through some of our NeoPixel samples today and found some "LED Christmas light kit" with star LEDs, its basically these stars
with a little USB plug that has IR, a crummy mic, a tactile switch to cycle modes manually, and a tiny microcontroller that turns the LED selections to different patterns - kinda like this:
The idea is cute - but the implementation could be improved with a lil sparkle motion
! we made a PCB that would fit into the same plastic enclosure but with an ESP32 instead. it's got an IR receiver, ICS-43434 I2S digital microphone
https://www.digikey.com/short/mmv3tthz
gpio 0 button in the 'right' place, 5V 2A fuse, USB-serial converter for uploading/debugging, and two level-shifted outputs. We can probably get the case in quantity or have this be a 'DIY replacement' that folks can use to make their existing setups WLED/xLights friendly.

By the time I caught up to the present, he was yelling in all-caps, demanding she pour ice water over my head and questioning her devotion to something called "Sparklemotion," which was always his go-to when he was really pissed off. My friends are weird.

Mere hours remain until the Grand Opening of The Dark Lady of New Orleans... and, I gotta say, I am SO THANKFUL for the community love and support that have been holding us up during our soft open and the first few weeks of what feels like such an amazing and magical opportunity. 😉 So much has come rolling in the last few days, so many beautiful miracles that get unveiled tomorrow... it’s hard to believe it’s already here, and that as much as things have changed and grown in the last couple weeks that this is only the beginning. A major piece of yesterday’s Thanksgiving prayers came from knowing how blessed I am to have found a home in New Orleans, the magical city Ive loved from afar since childhood and have come to love with all my heart since coming here, and to the magical community we’ve joined since choosing to open a shop of our vision. If you’re in town, we’d love to celebrate with you, offer a glass of wine, and show ya just what’s getting unveiled tomorrow.... and, if you’re not local, know that we love you and we’d raise a glass with you if you were here, but above all we thank you for being there for us and holding us up in your hearts and spirits. It means so much to me, and I only hope we do you proud on our opening day and for many, many days to come. See ya tomorrow! ;) #darkladynola #neworleans #newday #newbusiness #newphonewhodis #voodoo #vodou #hoodoo #conjure #workingtheroot #witch #witchesofinstagram #tarot #tarotreadersofinatagram #crescentcity #nolalove #nolalife #nolastyle #nolaROCKS #spiritsguideus #spirit #sparkles #sparklemotion #smallbusiness #smallbusinesssaturday #weloveyouall (at The Dark Lady of New Orleans)

mini Sparkle Motion prototype - a tiny, fully-featured WLED board ✨🔌📏💡🌈
We're doing a lot of serious testing with our WLED mega-board, code-name Sparkle Motion .
While doing some holiday lighting projects, we also wanted something slim enough to slip into any design. It still uses an ESP32 for the best support, with USB-serial programming, 5A fuse, 5V level shifting + 100 ohm series resistors for pixel drivers, user/reset buttons, a user LED and onboard neopixel, JST SH analog/digital connector, QT I2C connector, 4 GPIO plus power/ground breakouts, and USB type C power/data input.
However, this version is made simpler and less expensive by dropping the DC jack and USB PD support: it's only for 5V strips if you want to power them directly (you could still drive 12V or 24V pixels, but you'll need separate power for them). Instead of a full set of terminal blocks for 3 signals, we only have two outputs, and they have to share the power and ground pins. It could also be used for a single two-pin dotstar LED setup. We kept the built-in I2S mic but dropped the on-board IR sensor - if you want an IR sensor, you'll be able to plug it into the JST SH port with a simple cable or solder it into the breakout pads.
The trade-off is that it's much smaller and slimmer, especially when no terminal blocks are soldered in by default: only 1.2" long x 0.785" wide (~1 sq in) x 0.3" thick vs. the original's 2" x 1.3" (2.6 sq in) x 0.55". To get it that small, we went 4-layer to give us a nice big ground and 5V plane in the middle and double-sided assembly. Coming soon.
