Book Review: Behooved by M. Stevenson
★★★★1/2✩
This book took me by surprise in a fantastic way.
I was expecting a slow burn, marriage of convenience, a dash of adventure and a horse and I got so much of that and more.
This was fun, charming, whimsical, and once I got into it was such a a fun read full of sharp and smart characters with some representation of LGBTQ and chronic pain.
I'm really glad I decided to bump this up and read it—it's such a fun read that I r ad way faster than I expected due to the quick pacing, the marriage of convenience, the MCs catching actual feelings, and saving a kingdom.

“Mrs. Iris Dunlopp Whitcomb was, in her time, a painter, a scholar, helpmeet, and mother; a charitable institution, a seeker after occult knowledge whose tireless chronicle of the Unseen all similarly inclined personages must sure feel grateful for and such further records as were left behind in the wake of her ‘departure’ serve to reflect both the truly mercurial and impermanent nature of all such talents.”

Imagine this. You’re in your favourite bookstore, scanning the shelf where your favourite books reside, and there nestled between the familiar spines sits a red notebook. Imagine you’re in New York and it’s Christmas. You’re surrounded by people, by possibility, and the hope that somewhere in the city is that one person that’s meant for you. You just have to find them. How do you do that? It all depends on the kind of person you are.

I didn't want him morally grey. I wanted someone with a soul as black as night. Someone who would burn the world down for me and not lose a single minute of sleep over it.

"It had been a humdrum couple of days, reaffirming his belief in reincarnation: everything was so boring that this could not be the first time he'd experienced it. A cheerful thought, in its way, given the catastrophe. We'll be back."
