The thing is, Catalonia’s economy heavily depends on tourism, and the majority of tourists come to Catalonia for its hot weather and to enjoy days lazing at the pool.
And yeah that’s especially the case for British tourists, but they are not necessarily wealthy. Catalonia is not expensive, so it’s easy for a family with a small budget to vacation there. We’re not talking about the big rich here, we’re talking about regular families, who save all year long to allow themselves some extras during their vacation.
So I get where you’re going OP, and there is indeed a very dire water crisis in Catalonia, but the locals also need their economy to keep on turning, and attracting tourists with pools is a big part of that. That’s the big conundrum.
If you have tourists, you have hotels, you have restaurants, you have a whole variety of shops, you have activities (sports, museums, city tours, bowling alleys, etc.), and all of those generate jobs and salaries for the locals.
When I first read about the water crisis in Catalonia and the hotel pools issue, I also felt it was unfair to them, but actually so many jobs are at risk by ‘just’ closing the pools for the tourists.
So, yeah, that's one of the ways the water crisis is causing problems for locals.
saw an article about how the water crisis in catalonia is causing problems for british travelers' annual spain holidays by 'forcing pool closures' and just the fact that water crises are positioned as annoying inconveniences for wealthy people on vacation rather than a very real problem for The People Who Live There Always is such a perfect example of how classism is applied on a global/international scale. i couldn't give less of a fuck about a brit's spain holiday being ruined, tell me how the water crisis is causing problems for locals and how tourism is exacerbating the issue.
