Japanese violin player Midori Goto plays "Zapateado", written by Basque composer Pablo Sarasate.
Sarasate was born in Iruña (Nafarroa) in 1844 and was soon recognized as a child prodigy for music. Being just 12, Sarasate was awarded a scholarship by Spanish queen Isabella II to study in Paris, and just three years later he was a reknown soloist and composer throughout Europe.
According to the press of the time, his concerts and recitals were memorable, remarking Sarasate's the subtlety of his interpretation that combined attack, passion, flexibility and a natural facility for the violin. His left-hand technique was also famous, and so was his speed of execution. His universal prestige as a concert artist reached universal literature, when one of his performances at St James's Hall (London) was used by Arthur Conan Doyle in his story The Red-Headed League, when Sherlock Holmes postpones his investigations to go and listen to Sarasate, as a true fan of the violin.
Fun fact: Midori Goto was just 18 in the video.
