Gaf y a Estrella De La Muerte "Pyramids" 2023 Spain Canary Islands Neo Psych,Dream Pop,Space Indie Pop Rock,Kraut Rock,Experimental, double LP
full spotify
GAF are back! This time under their Estrella de la Muerte configuration and with a gateway musical behemoth double album into the cosmic unknown. The prolific project, helmed by local Canarian anchorman Mladen Kurajica, dwells deep into esoteric rock genres and this time, they waste no time in plunging the listener into their brave new type of cosmic rock with a deeply influenced krautrock voyage of '70s jamming and psychonautic exploration. Recorded over three days in the cultural space of El Tanque, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, at the height of the covid pandemic of 2020 and during one of the hottest summers to date, the band entered the space with no plan in mind deciding instead to approach the recording sessions without any preconceived ideas or pre-composed songs. Clean out of external influences and ready to experiment they loaded in all their available gear, including an array of modular synths, in order to create a new approach to song writing and flesh out some ideas for a future album in situ. The very process of that search, through pure improvisation and jamming, became the album we're presenting here. No overdubs or subsequent edits were done, except for cutting some songs so that they could fit on the album. Almost five hours of recordings in total, finally reaching a seven-track, 69-minute double LP. All the reverb heard on the record is the natural reverb of El Tanque, a 16-second tail natural reverb recorded with several room mics at different locations in the venue. Eventually this became the first fully instrumental album by the Estrella de la Muerte configuration, with a line-up of seven musicians (Gaf y Estrella de la Muerte are normally a sextet). Enter then, this inspired selection of psychedelically damaged tunes, '70s space rock, psychoacoustics, and Kosmishe inspired jamming. This is healing music for your mind-altering journeys. The titled "Pyramids" here serving not only as a gateway to the cosmic unknown but also as an exploratory symbol of the bands willingness to freely embrace their subconscious inner flows into a cosmic collective. Ecstatic music for these times....~
By Bob Baker Fish I heard the track âWormhole 74â from Canary Island ensemble GAF y La Estrella de la Muerte and had to know more. It was just so beautifully odd, with synth and live drums, alongside modular percussion, and (maybe) organ, that all operates in a polite yet almost cheeky manner and possesses a real energy and exuberance. With motorik rhythms and minimal ingredients, there is something almost perverse about how triumphant it becomes â without necessarily changing all that much. Itâs so difficult to categorise, hard to know what it is. But maybe thatâs the point, and maybe it doesnât really matter anyway. It turns out it was recorded over three days in the Canary Islands, in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, at the height of the covid pandemic of 2020. As a seven piece ensemble they recorded over five hours of improvisations that theyâve since edited down without overdubs into seven pieces at over 69 minutes. Itâs an approach quite reminiscent of Portuguese trio Niagara, and I think itâs that shared looseness and inspired weirdness that would be impossible to compose, is what initially drew me in. Itâs such a strange and inspired album, it really feels like a band who are having a jam, these elongated instrumental pieces that just when you think you have their measure, they introduce just one more (often subtle) element that simultaneously works, but you feel shouldnât necessarily be there. They call themselves a âpsychedelic, experimental, space rock music collective, âwhich feels pretty apt, as thereâs definitely a kind of hypnotic cosmic spiritual zen like feel to their music. And their yen for experimentation and strange amalgamations of sounds just elevates it further..........~
The Tenerife band Gaf y la estrella de la muerte is back with the announcement of the release of what will be their fourth album: Pyramids. It is a double album recorded over three days at the El Tanque cultural space in the midst of the Covid pandemic. After compiling almost five hours of material, the group, led by Mladen Kurajica, filed these recordings to leave them in seven tracks with a little more than an hour in length. A journey to the world of krautrock where for the first time the group has not registered vocals. All the reverb heard on the album comes directly from El Tanque, a natural reverb of 16 seconds of tail recorded with several mics at different points of the Tanque of about 50000m cubic, 50m in diameter and 18m in height. The title of Pyramids not only serves as a gateway to the unknown, but also as an exploratory symbol of the band's willingness to freely embrace their subconscious inner flows into a cosmic and ancestral collective. This album, successor to Gamma Ray (Foehn Records, 2018), will be released this coming September 8 through Keroxen/Discrepant and Foehn Records, with a couple of advances being available through the island label......~

a pretty piece of flesh please
This is a scene from Federico Garcia Lorcaâs 1933 surreal drama, Bodas de sangre (Blood Wedding). Set in rural Spain, the story concerns a doomed love triangle swirling around the nameless Bride, Groom and Leonardo Felix, who once was in love with the Bride but is now married to another. Driving the tragedy is the Groomâs bitter Mother, who has lost her husband and older son to an ancient feud with the Felix family. It is during the wedding itself that the Bride unexpectedly flees with Leonardo, leaving the Groom with no choice but to follow them. The two men kill each other and the rest of the play deals with the fallout for all the female characters.
Lorca loved his psychedelic Romanticism and this play does not disappoint. During the chase scene all manner of bizarreness happens, from a trio of otherworldly lumberjacks to the Moon making a walk-on appearance.
Perhaps the strangest, though, is Death herself, who takes the appearance of a curvaceous pauper; except for some stage directions, however, she is only referred to as the âBeggar Woman.â As the scene opens, two young women sit, spinning wool, while the Little Girl (who turns up in the play whenever a comedic line is needed) runs about being sassy. Soon Death shows up and asks, Yon bĂšl moso vyann, tanpri. [A pretty piece of flesh, please.]
LITTLE GIRL. Ale ale! [Go away!] BEGGAR WOMAN. Poukisa? [Why?] LITTLE GIRL. Paske w ap plenyen: ale. [Because youâre whining: go away.] BEGGAR WOMAN. Mwen te kapab mande pou je ou! Yon bann zwazo swiv mwen: ou vle youn? [I could ask for your eyes! A flock of birds is following me: do you want one?] LITTLE GIRL. Mwen vle ale lwen ou! [I want to get away from you!] YOUNG WOMAN I. [To the Beggar Woman.] Pa koute l! [Donât listen to her!] YOUNG WOMAN II. Eske ou soti nan rivyĂš a? [Are you from the river?] BEGGAR WOMAN. Se konsa mwen te vini. [Thatâs how I got here.] YOUNG WOMAN I. [Timidly.] Ăske mwen ka poze w yon kesyon? [Can I ask you a question?] BEGGAR WOMAN. Mwen te wĂš yo; yo pral byento la: de torrent lapĂš finalman ant gwo wĂČch yo, de gason nan pye chwal la. Mouri nan bote nan mitan lannwit lan. [Pauses.] Mouri, wi, mouri. [I saw them; they will be there soon: two river torrents at peace at last between the rocks, two men trampled between the horseâs feet. Dying in the beauty of the night. Dying, yes, dying.] LITTLE GIRL. FĂšmen bouch, dam toutouni, fĂšmen bouch! [Shut up, naked lady, shut up!] BEGGAR WOMAN. Li jis. Tout sa ki rete yo se flĂš an lĂČ sou sab sal. [Flowers fill their eye sockets, and their teeth are two handfuls of hard snow. They both fall, as the bride arrives, dressed in blood-stained hair. Under the blood-stained sheets they will return, carried on the shoulders of a handsome boy. So there is nothing more to be done. It is fair. All that remains are golden flowers on the dirty sand.][Vanishes.] YOUNG WOMAN I. Sal se sab la. [The sand is dirty.] YOUNG WOMAN II. Sou flĂš an lĂČ. [On the golden flower.] LITTLE GIRL. Sou flĂš an lĂČ a mĂČ yo pote tounen soti nan kouran an. Brown se youn, mawon se lĂČt la. Ki rossinyol ki nan lonbraj vole ak fĂš jouda sou flĂš an lĂČ! [Beneath the golden flower they carry them from the river. Dark-haired is one, dark-haired is the other. Let the shadow of the nightingale fly and call to the golden flower!]

It's been a few busy days, but finally tonight I have a chance to spin something again. I've gone with Sketches of Brunswick East by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard with Mild High Club. This album is mostly jazz, the name likely being inspired by Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis. However, there are also elements of psychedelic rock present throughout. You can clearly hear the influences of both artists on this record, and yet their sounds still blend together seamlessly. The album cover is actually a picture of a three-dimensional model, built by Jason Galea and photographed by Jamie Wdziekonski. This variant is a translucent yellow vinyl with sky blue splatter, which matches the cover really well.

Two questions, --
One, -- what kind of music do you like? What do you listen to on the regular? Does it vary? Do you just suffer in silence?
And two, -- why do you listen to said music? And/or, just, .. suffer in silence .. with just your thoughts as company ... empty, hollow thoughts .. followed by voices that occupy, that stangely arent your own .. aha .. ahahaha ... laughs in schizophrenic đđđ
Your obedient servant,
(Hehe, hamilton reference)

Alcina Dimitrescu: I enjoy jazz music, Big Band, Ragtime, and Bossa Nova primarily, although I make an major exception for Miles Davis. Not that jazz is the only genre I listen to, it simply will be my truest musical love. I listen to it because I've always loved it, but it, it also reminds me of my time with my own band, "Miss D and the Pallboys" those old records bring back so many memories.
(A side note from the author; I think in those genres Alcina would particularly like Duke Ellington, Laufey, Cab Calloway, and Miles Davis. I know Miles Davis isn't Big Band Ragtime or Bossa Nova but there's no way she wouldn't like Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain)
Donna Beneviento: I-I listen to quieter classical mostly... I like Tchaikovsky's Seasons a lot. I like to listen to music *her voice drops* to drown out the voices... like you said. *her head drops*
Angie Beneviento: Gangsta Rap is the shit, my brotha! I'm a fucking OG! I'm cappin homie's asses every hour! You know? I recorded my own album?
Bela Dimitrescu: I'm the suffer in silence option. I don't really know much music. Sometimes I like to listen to Cassandra's rock if I can hear it from the other room. Although, I do have a favorite song, at least, Cass introduced me to it, "Romeo Had Juliette" Lou Reed. *Hums it to herself* (Totally didn't just assign Bela my own favorite song, I would never.)
Cassandra Dimitrescu: I love rock, most of it, but Grunge and psychedelic shit in particular, y'know, Jimi Hendrix, the Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana. I listen to it because it's metal as fuck. *Quieter* Uncle Heis taught me that phrase and I cannot be more grateful.
Daniela Dimitrescu: I like pop music, Bela called my taste "phony" when she was reading "The Catcher In the Rye" I'm not a swifty but I'm really close, honestly, and my sister's make fun of me for it constantly. *Being laughed at* l do like some not swifty-like music though! I also like Weezer and Tally Hall! See! Not a swifty, Cassie!

After the flirtations of JosĂ© QuintĂn Vargas aka Quentin Gas with electronic and urban sounds, after six years of absence from the project with Los Zingaros -which had left us waiting since SinfonĂa Universal Cap 02 (Cap 01 is still pending)- the return could not be more apotheosic than with this bouquet of 16 intense pieces. Quentin Gas fully opens up the flamenco range (bulerĂas, seguiriyas, tangos and more) to sift it with electronica, space rock, psychedelia, guitar riffs, flirtations with Punjab music (origin of all this), heartbreaking voices, and special guests such as Perrate, Anni B Sweet, Noni Meyers, Enzo Leep, Playback Maracas, Future Ark, Curro Vargas, Miguelito GarcĂa (DMBK), Las Corraleras de Lebrija, among others. Album Review #50 - En el maravilloso mundo de Ingeson by The Speakers
This album feels like an orphaned child in the vast landscape of music, completely forgotten in its own land. It represents an eclectic mix of beautiful amorphous Psychedelic Pop, sleek Garage Rock and pretty Baroque.
Rock never truly formed a movement in Colombia around that time (the examples of these era are limited to a handful of artists). Radio took longer to get here due to the country's challenging terrainâthree Andean mountain ranges no less, and when it finally took off, all genres that preceded Rock, the Swing, Blues, etc, were long gone, leaving Rock to fight with no context as to its existence and therefore ending with a handful of enthusiasts. And this album? This album was one of those incredible exceptions. Even a lot of Rock artists in the 60s were influenced by Presley and others, they wanted the rebellion and were looking for imitation, it was only when these guys said, "hey, lets experiment and look for some wacky sounds!" That this album came to light. Do you think a label ever accepted to produce it? Never, absolutely no fucking way, not in a million years. It was independently produced in a limited run of 1,000 copies with money of the band members themselves who managed to sell around 850 copies door to door. The studio? It was lent by the owner once they added its name to the album title. It was the first of its kind back then and it was available, because a lot of people still preferred to keep recording the old fashioned way so the studio wasn't being used by many. This record came to be without the infrastructure to support its artistic statements and the fact it exists is just wild.
It sounds very influenced by The Piper at the Gates at Dawn but with a closer approach to Baroque Pop. Oda a la Gente Mediocre with it's polyrhythmic jam, the Medieval Ode of Por la Mañana, the quirky Historia de un Loto. Many songs here pull a kaleidoscope of beautiful soundscapes. Socio-political commentary like Si La Guerra es Un Negocio, and the beautiful solo section in Nosotros, Nuestra Arcadia. Everything here is vibrant and wonderfully intricate. It is music made by and for those who wished to explore. It has an air of stream of conciousness and surrealism with an air of playful fantasy and fairy tale that I really love.
This is the type of thing that you do, no one acknowledges for 40 years, and then, half a century later, someone stumbles upon it and someone comes to you and tells you, âHey, this was pretty cool!â The album isn't even available here, the 2008 reissue? It was made in Spain. Most available copies? You get them from the United States. Most people never cared for it or even knew of its existence. But the truth is that this album is simply and always be incredibly beautiful. It will be, forever and always, one shining rare gem of its own kind.
7/10

[Album of the day] Wet Cactus - Wet Cactus
Cantabria, Spain // 2015
[Genres] stoner rock, desert rock,* heavy psych
[Themes] marijuana, The Blues (TM)
[FFO] Hendrix
[Thoughts] Just a short post today. this self-titled release was an early introduction to metal for me. Though not widely known, I think Wet Cactus still outperforms much contemporary stoner rock I hear.** Like many stoner rock artists, the bassist is the vocalist (singing primarily in English), which I always like to see. Wet Cactus also brags two guitarists and some really consistent drumming.
Spain seems to really like their desert rock, which surprised me until I thought about their climate for about 10 seconds.*** I'll be moving to the country in the next year, so I'm putting out a call for any Spanish bands. If you know a Spanish band or are in one yourself, feel free to reach out; I'll listen to your music and might wind up promoting it here as well.
o()xxxx[:::::::::::::::::> o()xxxx[:::::::::::::::::> o()xxxx[:::::::::::::::::>
* The line between stoner rock and desert rock is thin, with both terms originally applied to bands in the Palm Desert Scene. I will only use the term "desert rock" for music that has an evolutionary memory of grunge; "stoner rock" I use more generally.
** And I'm known for listening to too much stoner rock.
*** Also weed has been decriminalized in Spain for a while, which can't exactly hurt the psychedelic music scene.

History of the world
Back in the day, there were no cities. The first cities came to being in Mesopotamia. Meanwhile, cities also sprang up in Egypt. Between the cities, there were soon wars. Egypt remained relatively stable under the Pharaos. Sumeria and later Akkad saw many dynasties rise and fall. At some point ancient Greece became more powerful. After decades of suffering under assaults by the Persians, Alexander the Great led an army half-way across the continent, conquering Persia and ultimately turning back after reaching India. A few centuries later, Rome ascended. They fought in Gaul, Greece, Spain and Africa, uniting the mediterranean under one empire. With the spread of Christendom, the empire disbanded, and was soon overrun by barbarians from the East and North. All this time, China knew many conflicts as well, but became a solid union after some time and knew little particularism over the years.
We have pretty much described everything that happened, although later ages saw the rise of an Islamic empire as well. We see that Christendom is the force that ended the history of the world.
Today I went to a festival with many rock bands. The rest of the day I did almost nothing. There really isn't that much to do. I ate Burgundian meatspread for lunch. I drank about five or six cups of coffee, which is a bit more than I intend these days. (The recommended amount is four cups.) The first rock band I saw today was DeWolff, which is alledgedly a bluesrock band with psychedelic elements. I liked it, but it was all new to me and I couldn't quite distinguish the various songs. Then we saw a brass band that played metal songs. I don't really like metal, and I didn't really like those guys, but they played good. Finally, there was an AC/DC tribute band that played. I kept waiting for the only song I really know of them, Highway to Hell, which I always find a bit intimidating, I mean the song sounds riveting but the text is a bit depressing maybe, I don't like people cheerfully singing we're going to hell that's all. But there was this girl in front of me who did a cutish little enthusiastic jump when the song played all the time, which was entertaining. When we came home my roommate lost his keys, and he had to lift back to our house on the bagage carrier of my bicycle. Ah well. When I got back home I couldn't really find peace and I started listening to jazz music on my laptop and I just sat in my chair pondering various things, most importantly the nature of my history program and the nature of my Asian Studies program. I couldn't quite conclude anything about Asian Studies - you know, it's a rather queer field. But I concluded that history is a beautiful study, you learn to report information as well as think up theoretical observations about it, which is nice: you know, history is a revolutionary science, really, because you think about everything, just like with philosophy. So the last part of the night I kept thinking about what philosophy is.

The debut album Tiempos de Vencer by Spanish psych folk rock band Esperanto is out on YaiYai Records! Tiempos De Vencer presents a well-oiled band (members of Mohama Saz, Maika Makovski etc.) with a need to transmit a hopeful message with their grooves and arrangements from the East. From the ashes of Melange rose Esperanto. In 2020, Melange ended their short but intense and successful career. The void that remained was filled by the creative process of three former members of the band; Dani Fernandez and the Ceballos brothers, Serio and Adrean. Esperanto emerged from stolen moments between Maika Makovski and Mohama Saz, the latter from which Javier Alonso was recruited. Tiempos de Vencer is an absolute must have and has arrived at the perfect moment. During these extraordinarily toxic times, the arrival of this record is a crucial injection of high caliber, unprecedented music. Music that transports you from Chicago Free-Jazz to Berlin's Kraut Rock stopping off in Canterbury along the way. Its essence is perceived in every beat, a feeling that comes from times past, from hard work, from the soul. These songs envelope and adorn you with eastern arrangements, they help you find victory, they propel you forward, and they are here to stay. Esperanto has just arrived but, did you not notice that it was already here? These musicians have joined together to create a record that embraces you with a compilation of songs that are more necessary than ever....~ From the ashes of Melange came Esperanto.
