Fuck, I’m sorry, first I had to wait till I’m unshadowbanned but then I wrote a part and kept it in the drafts; I’ve been meaning to get to it in some nearest days, I guess now might be a time. (I’m the anon)

Somehow until this post I didn’t actually realize the full… idk, importance? Not exactly the right word. Of the ashen quadrant. Now realizing that ohmygod. A kismesis that only works when it is auspisticized. Or maybe not necessarily but still it’s a completely different thing when the hatemates are on their own and when there’s the mediator present, them being as integral part of the relationship as the hatemates themselves. Aaaaaaaa.

……so yeah, I guess, it ends up that I don’t actually technically ship ssdd in all quadrants, because I do not (as of now) have a headcanon where somebody is auspisticizing between them.

The two paragraphs above were written in that first go, I have also since played Hiveswap and Friendsim and so did my sister and we’ve been talking about Konyyl and Azdaja and ended up with a conclusion: they aren’t red or pale or black, they are ashen without an auspistice.

That said, yeah, Callie auspisticizing between Dirk and Caliborn fucks. It fucks so hard. As does Dirk and Roxy auspisticizing between the cherubs!!

yes i do ship uUcest in the ashen quadrant as well! it actually used to be a really popular interpretation of the ship back in Ye Olden Days (like, pre-2015, which is when i jumped on board).

(actually, funny story about that. the "quartermaster of the s.s. cherry limeade" in my bio is a direct callback to those days. i was one of the original uUcest shippers in 2012, back when it was called cherry limeade, and when i mean original, i literally mean i was one of the very first. there were a few of us scattered around various sites, and at some point, a dear friend named vivi, who has sadly since then disappeared off the internet entirely, gathered a bunch of us into an IRC room and we spent several hours fucking around roleplaying homestuck characters, including me having my first uUcest roleplay. i never actually figured out who my caliborn was in that chat!

after that, a bunch of us started posting in the cherry limeade tag, which until then had mostly been photos of drinks, and vivi was christened the "captain of the s.s. cherry limeade;" shortly after, i claimed my title of quartermaster, and it was the title of my blog until fandom got weird and gross and i started getting death threats lmao.)

where this all started; yeah, it used to be incredibly common to see uUcest shipped ashen with dirk or roxy (or both!) as the mediator. callieroxy and dirkuu are actually both major squicks of mine except in this context; i really love ashen cal/dirk/callie and callie/roxy/cal. brings me back to the good ol' days of the alpha kids desperately trying to play relationship counselor to two bodysharing aliens who are simultaneously codependent and homicidal.

your last paragraph made me think, though: i think dirkuu with callie auspisticising between dirk and caliborn would fuck pretty hard. i like the idea of dirk&cal only working if calliope's around to keep her brother in check (and maybe letting him work out his more violent urges that a human couldn't handle).

So I saw a Homestuck item for sale recently that might actually be a problem[?]

Not 100% sure on whether it is a problem but I’ma post all the info I have here and let y’all decide.

So it has to do with a pack of Homestuck Midnight Crew playing cards being available for purchase from several different Ebay sellers as well as a few third party online sellers of novelty trading cards [the only reason I saw it is because I collect novelty playing cards].

I did go ahead and grab a pack so that I could compare it to the authentic Midnight Crew Playing cards.

I’m gonna come back to The Felt Playing cards a little later for a different point, but first I just wanna show the box art for them.

The authentic deck box has the suits on it, nice ribbon, all 4 weapons from the crew against a bloody spade backdrop, very nice.

This is one side of the deck box art of the “new” Midnight Crew playing cards. I ain’t saying anything about the art, the art is really nice, this isn’t a complaint about the art, this is me being unsure of how legit these cards are.

This is the art on the other side of the deck box. Also my second point of confusion, if I wasn’t clear my first and main point is the legitimacy of this item, my second point is why is Snow on the box of a midnight crew deck?? She’s not party of the crew, she absolutely does not belong on this box my dudes.

Decks are the same size [2.45 inches by 3.5 inches], an average playing card deck, so nothing majorly changed there

Now admittedly this has messed me up since I got the cards, cause the backing of the authentic cards does not match the deck box art. And on one hand I can understand why, the deck box art is usually symmetrical, that allows for the plays to shuffle the cards as much as they want and always have them remain right side up cause the cards, if split through the middle horizontally remain mirror images of each other.

The deck box art is asymmetrical, and buddy you’d look real dumb holding your cards upside down. But I still feel they could have made the design asymmetrical with some adjustments, but that’s a complaint for a different day. The authentic midnight crew playing cards have the same backing design as the felt playing cards.

For the “new” deck the Snowman design is actually the backing. not only is it asymmetrical and the back of your hand is gunna make you look silly, but again it should have at least been the Slick art cause that makes SENSE

This part made me really feel like the new deck was just milled from a printing company that is open to taking any orders for a deck of cards. It made me feel pretty sure that the deck was a bootleg/knock off.

The left most card is the only bonus card that comes in the authentic deck, giving credit to the artists involved in creating the deck, by name and tumblr blog.

The middle and right most cards come from the new deck, they’re the sort of cards that you sometimes get in regular old playing card decks, poker hands and a how to play x or y game.

Left is the authentic, right is the new. Now this far from the card the camera doesn’t really pick up any differences.

The art from the authentic deck, the colors might look a little washed out I had to brighten my camera to get a clearer picture.

The new deck, between the 2 decks there’s no real difference in art used for the cards. And the colors are identical, the no adjustment in brightness or hue between the 2 sets [any differences seen in the images are probably due to my camera].

This is as close as I could get to a card from the new set, without it going blurry on me, and you can see the little crossing lines on it. That’s the biggest noticeable difference; material quality

The authentic deck is made of card stock with a smooth finish

New deck is card stock with a linen finish [linen while a nice tactile feeling also can make the edges of an image a little blurry; I’ve noticed this the most on the cards that have clocks on them].

The new deck has a very strong plastic smell, but I blame that on the thin plastic the cards were in [but man is it STRONG]

Authentic deck smells of card stock, which I’m hoping this deck smells like when it airs out

They feel about the same thickness

The boxes on the other hand; authentic box feels thicker, sturdier, the print job is sealed, more likely to last

I’ve only just opened the new deck and the box feels much flimsier, there is no sealing on the colors on the deck; which is evidenced by the fact that I’ve managed to scuff it just by opening it

The last thing that bothers me is the copyright information on the box [I don’t know what else to call it]

Now this leaves me confused, The Felt playing cards have the Homestuck and Whatpumpkin logo on the bottom copyright Andrew Hussie bla bla bla you know the rest. But the Midnight Crew cards don’t have that anywhere on the box [and I know damn well they’re authentic]

Yet the new deck has it on the bottom, except it’s being created under the For Fans by Fans, copyright 2019

Which just leaves me confused as fuck all. I, may not be the biggest fan of FFBF as a third party selling site, but I visit it fairly often to keep an eye on what’s going on with the homestuck stuff [I also follow their tumblr and get email updates from them] so like, did I miss something here??? Am I wrong and this is a reprint that was made and sold out hella fast on FFBF??

The last thing I’m gunna include is the description and details that are [literally identical] found on every selling post about these cards

See if the cards are bootleg it means that all those people listed up on the card crediting the artists involved means they are absolutely not getting their due payments for the art provided on the cards, nor is Hussie or for fans by fans getting any money back on these decks.

It also means 1 to a few people had to come together, have really good images of the cards to provide a template for the printing company, pony up the dough to get x amount of decks printed, and then make bank on letting third party sellers on ebay or online sell them [or even they’re the one’s directly selling them online] it’s hard to say.

All I know is this feels real fishy to me

It's probably some hidden level of masochism he didn't even know he had, that he took her up on the offer. He really, really shouldn't have. He knew damn well how much this would hurt. But, well, nobody could ever say Spades Slick was a very smart man.

He visited that Snowman's universe, like she offered. Her Midnight City. And he hates it. It looks just like his. Sounds just like his. Even smells like his own. He keeps turning his head, half-expecting to see Droog at his side, the ever trusted moirail right-hand, or Hearts at his back, intimidating anyone dumb enough to pass off the everyone else as nonthreats, or Deuce lagging behind, constantly getting distracted. But they're not there. And each time he looks back, seeing nobody there, that sharp pain in his chest just gets tighter.

Eventually, it gets to the point where he can't stand it anymore. He ducks into a dark alley and sits against a wall. His breathing is shaky as he presses a metal hand against his face. He remembers this alley from his own universe. In his timeline, it was neutral territory. Hopefully, nobody will find him.

Unfortunately, someone does.

is there anything to be said about the parallels batween the jacks and vriska (sword through the chest, missing and eye and an arm, vris and slick dying on the same page, etc) or is that just paradox space being paradox space

There is definitely something to be said, though I don’t know what it is. It’s also pertinent that Vriska shares motifs with Snowman, namely the 8 Ball and BLUH BLUH HUGE BITCH. Since the Intermission takes place in Felt Manor, the events within ought to function as a depiction of the mind of Lord English – so understanding the roles of Slick and Snowman in whatever psychological story is going on there would probably be helpful in understanding both Vriska and Lord English. But I was never able to manage that, so, alas.

I do have ONE thing to say, but first I have to talk about the Terminator films. There was something Sarah Conner said to a Skynet engineer in T2:

“Fucking men like you built the hydrogen bomb. Men like you thought it up. You think you’re so creative. You don’t know what it’s like to really create something; to create a life; to feel it growing inside you. All you know how to create is death and destruction…”

This line later comes to haunt her son, John Conner, as he faces down Skynet in Terminator: Salvation. As a soldier, John deals primarily in death and destruction against machines, but when he is forced to recognize that a machine could nonetheless be a person, his position is complicated. During the climactic battle, John is forced to bring his ostensible enemy from the brink of death, jump-starting his heart with a handy pair of electrical wires. At this moment that John forgoes his feud, that he takes Frankenstein’s lightning in hand and creates life, Arnold Schwarzenegger comes out of nowhere and stabs him in the back with an iron girder, which erupts from his chest like a fucking Xenomorph.

So the moment John Conner chooses life over death is supplemented with a violent Hollywood shorthand for birth: chest-burster.

Since face-huggers and chest-bursters are the main components of Fiduspawn, I’m inclined to think Hussie is familiar with this particular subset of psychosexual symbols. So with the above reading in mind, Terezi’s sword sticking out of Vriska’s chest is possibly much funnier than it has any right to be – like within the paradigm for death we’ve established (that the circumstances of a character’s death bear some relation to a latent wish), Vriska getting a visual chest-burster can be linked to her getting her head and arm blown apart by the magic cue ball (since both of those motifs represent birth). Also relevant that Vriska refers to these sort of deaths as getting “sucker sta88ed”, when we’ve recently connected the Auryn within the cherub’s juju to the prenatal unity of mother and child? (x) Getting “sucker sta88ed” is thus linked to the ouroboric cancer symbol (69), cancer being yet another cipher for pregnancy.

All of which is to say, in this context at least, is that chest-burster stabs seem to add more evidence to what we’ve know for a while: that death is eroticized (x).

Revisiting John’s own sucker stabbing has given me a tentative idea for how to integrate Jack into the psychosexual proceedings: recall when Mom and Dad shared a cake as the image of John drilling filled the surrounding clouds, and as the sexual tension tightened, Bec Noir arrived and dealt out murder as the simultaneous severance and culmination of their union? I wonder if that makes Jack the baby. Or to shoehorn in an Oedipal trifecta again, I wonder if Jack’s rank being that immediately below King and Queen positions him as the Child to Father and Mother, in the abstract.

To issue a small correction to the model of King and Queen put forward in the Dirk/Roxy post (x): the King is still associated with pregnancy. But the Queen is not primarily linked to impregnation, but isolated ejaculation, which /is/ freedom, which /is/ birth, as elaborated in recent discussion of the cherubs. (x) This is the WV/PM contrast between democracy and liberty, that which ties people together (Blood) versus that which separates them from each other (Breath) – and thus pregnancy versus birth.

Insofar as Lord English comes to displace the Black King in Act 6, Spades Slick breaking into his vault is another exercise in Putting the Bunny Back in the Box? A motif perhaps subtly reiterated by Slick climbing into his own warchest, or various moments of the Midnight Crew forcing the Felt inside of their respective boxes, or Biscuits climbing into his oven… But weirdly, even though Snowman is kind of acting as the law (broken head upon turning back time, castrated arm upon entering forbidden vault), and even though those motifs of separation are linked to birth (x), she’s also the one who traps him in the vault? Which reads more as insemination I guess, with ‘freedom’ immediately resulting in ‘confinement’, and Jack is babby. 

Which makes it sounds like the fantasy permeating the mind of Lord English is not particularly fantastical? Like a rote pregnancy. Though I suppose this doesn’t account for the way becoming a symbolic fetus also made Jack a ‘god’, insofar as he now has access to the fourth wall…? Hm

Insofar as Jack and the Queen form a Child/Mother pairing then, Vriska having elements of both could align with her chestburster death? But this still leaves a lot unexplained, like when Vriska climbs into the symbolic maw of Lord English and “dumps” the symbol of her reality out of a chest after plucking it from the flaming red X in English’s bowels…? I think we’re hitting a stopping point, but this was good progress. Thank you for the question!

You know, I sometimes see people saying that the quadrants are artificial and/or problematic, like kismesissitude being inherently abusive or whatever, and maybe I'm stupid but I don't really see it? I mean sure, for humans it wouldn't work, but that's the thing: the trolls AREN'T human. They don't work like we do, and it seems like the quadrants are completely fine for them? I'm willing to consider that the ruthless regime of Alternia has maybe used and warped the quadrant system for its own goals, but I don't think it's supposed to be inherently dysfunctional, because then the Beforan trolls probably wouldn't be using it, right? Or was it screwed up and warped there also, but in a different way? Is there something I'm not getting here?

Kismesis for trolls, the way I see it, is something like a rivalry between two people. It's a match to often outdo the other, but you both see each other as equals in some sense. Can also be described as, "Hey! The only one who gets to talk shit about B, is me, A!" The feud between the individuals may go to things like verbal and physical abuse, but it is not to the point of death. Even if one or both party members are highblood trolls, death should not be the reaching point for this pitched romance. The reason why most think it is abuse is because of the involvement of things like the physical harm, despite that they are aliens with their own world thinking and should not be equated to human standards. Probably doesn't help that the well-known pitch romance tends to be Gamzee x Terezi, which is received negatively by fans once it hits [S] GAME OVER. There are other blackroms like we see in Spades Slick x Snowman, but I guess it isn't taken too seriously as others? But I also think the one time the hate-love went too far is with the Black Queen and Jack Noir that would lead to him taking the ring. There is Eridan and Vriska, who were once pitched together. The reason why some might dismiss it is because the whole Vriska is more of a lesbian than straight and Eridan tends to be a creep. But even after the breakup, the two still each other by their FLARP names. The only other reason I see Vriska breaking up is because upon learning about The Summoner and his connection with Tavros, she wanted to cut ties with Eridan to see that challenge herself and hope Tavros would become that new rival for her. John and Terezi is another example of it being pitch, but that is often because of him listening to Terezi to "fix" the timeline and the events that would be Epilogue and Homestuck^2. I'm not a fan of it if because that Terezi would still want Vriska as a friend despite all the shit she caused, abandoning all her other friends like Nepeta, Aradia, Sollux, and Karkat, and of course, I don't see John being always antagonistic to Terezi like she would towards him. At best, he could pull a few pranks at the teal, but I don't think he would go far to do something like physically harm her or be in a sort of rivalry with her for too long. It would be kind of interesting to see if a kismesis could work in a Homestuck fanwork. Maybe joke about how for the tsundere type character in Eastern Alternian animation (anime), it gets confusing on whether the romance is red or black. Trolls would see this in human's anime as well, questioning how is it really redrom if most of the buildup was pitched. But I suppose mutual rivalry is not going to be loved if two people slapping each other in the face in a silly flailing motion, is seen as sexual abuse to some people.
