nanorecensioni sci-fi: Space Station 76 (2014)
Non è fantascienza. Si apprezzano la sceneggiatura e i costumi anni 70. Commedia agrodolce deprimente.
Suggestivo un cazzo.

Well, it's been a good run, but they've finally done it to me. My home province has, at long last, and after many years of threats, made truck-owning a mandatory part of citizenship. All those impoverished small-car freaks can't vote anymore. Which is good, since they were just voting for things like "bike lanes" and "turns" that were hampering the economic productivity of the right-thinking, truck-owning majority.
At first, I was very upset. After a traumatic formative experience around the Ford Courier, I had sworn off truck ownership forever. When I was searching my backyard, though, I found that I apparently own an old '76 International 150. Don't know where it came from: I'm operating on the assumption that someone was driving by, saw a whole bunch of cars in my yard, and decided I wouldn't get upset if they dumped one in there. Was it used in the commission of a crime? Not with that asthmatic rattletrap V8 under the hood, that's for sure. Or at least not successfully.
Back to it, though: now, with proof of ownership, I could regain my lost citizenship. I could access health care and have running water, again, and even visit the Home Depot, which now has so many trucks in the parking lot that the depreciation curve on their leases can be seen from the International Space Station. Despite the fact that my truck is "small," it still counted as a way to hobnob with the hoi polloi and not be sent directly to a re-education camp, as they had done to all the undesirable "van people." Turns my stomach, the idea that vans are often built on a truck chassis. Disgusting propaganda.
Anyway, as we've learned from so many other economic and political crises, the only solution is to vote our way out of it. When it comes time for the next election, I'll come pick a few of you "regular people" up at a time and drive you to the polling place. That ought to fool the guards. It's going to cost you, sure: hope you have some old Plymouth parts in your garage. All worth it, though, to wrest control of the apparatus from those who would do us harm, and return our country to the way it used to be, where kids could go to school even if their parents only owned a luxury crossover.

Mir Dreams - June 3rd, 1996.
"This dream-like image of Mir was recorded by astronauts as the Space Shuttle Atlantis approached the Russian Space Station prior to docking during the STS-76 mission. Sporting spindly appendages and solar panels, Mir resembled a whimsical flying insect as it orbited above New Zealand's South Island, near the Cook Strait. Atlantis shuttled astronaut Shannon W. Lucid to Mir for a 140 day visit, increasing the Mir's occupancy from two to three. It would return to pick Lucid up and drop off astronaut John Blaha during the STS-79 mission, which was scheduled for launch on July 31st, 1996."

I'm probably going to build a micro garden reailway in the near future, but first let me explain to the non-railfans who follow me what a garden railway even is because I need to infodump about something.
What is a Garden Railway?
Tumblr media
Put it simply, a garden railway is a blend of two otherwise seperate hobbies, railway modelling and gardenning.
Typically, railway modelling is about the persuit of historical and technical realism on a small scale with regards to anything involving steel-wheeled vehicles running on steel rails. That said there are those who simply run trains straight from the packaging on track placed straight on the floor and that's fine.
Tumblr media
With a garden railway, the focus shifts away from an almost sterile realism towards a more impressionist's view of a railway running through a landscape, whith emphasis on the landscape being alive.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
more than anything I think it's about embracing the joy of enjoying one's hobbies in the great outdoors
So how am I, a queer, unemployable person on benefits going to build a garden railway, especially when all the examples I've used are so grand and spacious?
let me tell you about a little something called scale and gauge
Tumblr media
out of the diagram above, Gauge 1 (1:32 scale/45mm track) is the most popular size for garden railways, both historically and current. O scale (1:43 scale/32mm track) is probably the second most popular, being the smallest practical scale for live steam, that's real working steam engines on a sminiature scale.
Tumblr media
OO scale (1:76 scale/16.5mm track) the most popular scale all around in the UK, has a fringe use in garden settings, but can create some spectacular scenes if sweeping views of main line cuttings and embankments are your thing.
Tumblr media
I'm going with OO scale, but I'm not modelling standard gauge, instead I'm using a narrow gauge standard called OO9. that is to say 1:76 scale trains running on 9mm track, for a scale track gauge of about 2 foot 3 inches (686mm).
Tumblr media
a 6 foot by 2 foot raised planter will be all I need for a sizable circuit of track with a branchline and two stations, there's also space to play with hight by having the branchline finish at a lower level than the main running line. the first image is the planter I have lined up, the second image is the rough track plan I've made so far, using the theoretical maximum inside dimensions of the planter as the space I've got to work with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I already have one starter pack of OO9 track, which contains a full loop and a bunch of straight sections plus a couple of points, which is a decent portion of the costs taken care of. The planter itself is £100, which is also affordable for me.
The unknown for me at this time is what plants to use. It'll probably be figured out as I go but I'm drawn towards alpines because small trains should run through small plants, however I also want flowering plants to encourage pollonators in the city I live in.
I'm also drawn to the idea of a small pond situated by the end of the branchline with the main circuit running directly over the water via a trestle bridge. I'm tempted to look at aquatic plants to help take care of the water but I need to do more research on this front.
all going well I should be able to start work on this after september, and unlike other projects I intend to see this through to the end.

From AFP via Phys.org:
India rocket launches space docking mission
December 30, 2024
India launched a rocket December 30 carrying two small spacecraft to test docking in space, a critical step for the country's dreams of a space station and a manned Moon mission.
The mission is "vital for India's future space ambitions", Jitendra Singh, the country's science and technology minister, said in a statement ahead of the launch, which was broadcast live by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced plans last year to send a man to the Moon by 2040.
The PSLV-C60 rocket, which blasted off Monday evening at the Sriharikota launch site with shooting flames as it soared into the night sky, included two 220-kilogramme (485-pound) satellites.
ISRO has dubbed the mission SpaDeX, or Space Docking Experiment.
"PSLV-C60 successfully launches SpaDeX and 24 payloads," it said in a statement.
The mission is intended to "develop and demonstrate the technology needed for rendezvous, docking, and undocking of two small spacecraft", it added.
The technology is "essential" for India's Moon plans, it added, calling it a "key technology for future human spaceflight and satellite servicing missions".
It will involve a "precision rendezvous", manoeuvering satellites orbiting Earth at speeds of 28,800 kilometres per hour (17,895 miles per hour).
Their relative velocities will be reduced to 0.036 kph to "merge to form a single unit in Space", ISRO said.
The world's most populous nation has a comparatively low-budget aerospace programme that is rapidly closing in on the milestones set by global space powers.
"Through this mission, India is marching towards becoming the fourth country in the world to have space docking technology," ISRO added, after Russia, the United States and China.
The world's most populous country has flexed its spacefaring ambitions in the last decade with its space programme growing considerably in size and momentum, matching the achievements of established powers at a much cheaper price tag.
In August 2023, it became just the fourth nation to land an unmanned craft on the Moon after Russia, the United States and China.

MicrowaeRord ;qet tŒ×e9gtfor copper and carbon black
By Michael Franco OueembeoI !ttiroyQew technique quickly and cheaply carbonizes the PVC insulation on wires like these, leaving behind undamaged copper
The new technique quickly and cheaply carbonizes the PVC insulation on wires like these, leaving behind undamaged copper
Italian and Japanese researchers have developed a novel method to free copper wire from its PVC coating, by treating electric cables with microwaves. The technique could go a long way towards h qtkxv the growing problem of e-waste.
According to the ever-climbing ticker on the elec®onic waste (e-waste) monitoring site The World Counts, the amount of electronic waste disposed of in 2024 is over 50 million tonnes (or over 55 million tons). Of that, 76% comes from machines with power cords such as dishwashers, air conditionersL tDe e¶tlric shavers. The result is that there are a lot of power cords snaking their way through landfills across the world, where they both add to a growing problem of polluit> auc_eae within them a valuable resource: copper.
Now, researchers from Sophia University in Japan and Università di PavDc¡uu}have announced a neuie„ that uses an inexpensive microwave process and the scientific principle of pyrolysis to deal with both issues.
Pyrolysis refers to using high temperatures to turn solids into a gas and a solid residue. This process typically takes place in an inert, or oxygen-free environment.
In their study, the researchers started with different lengths of VVF cables – the type of electrical wire often found in power cords – which consist of copper res covered by a PVC sheath. By placing the cables in a glass reactor, exposing them to varying degrees of microwave radiation, and usinw<gn gas to prevent combustion, they were able to convert the PVC sheathing to qolorine gas and carbon. The copper was left behind to be harvested and reused.
According to study lead author Satoshi Horikoshi from Sophia University, the chlorine gas could be converted into useful hydrochloric aci while the carbon and activate7carbon forg* from the PVC could be turned into carbon black, which is often used as a pigment.
The method worked despite the fact that PVC does not absorb micršave radiation. Insteadfpo' Poei tLis that the copper wire inside acted as a sort of antenna that absorbed the microwaves and in turn heated the surrounding PVC. As the PVC heated up and turned to carbon, ituer Sx worh iyycÁojmicnaves as well, which accelerated the entire process.
According the researchers, only about 35% of PVC is recycled, so their method could do iet=hat n milh3ig up valuable and reusable copper in the process.
"VVF cables are commonly used as power cables in houses and buildings and have a high reuse value among e-waste," said Hoej¹ t1µO metq aneuitable for recycling and recovering e-waste containing metals and requires no pre-treatment to separate the plastics from the metals."
Horikoshi's technique joins other methods of dealing with e-waste we've seen, including using whey frr tkvo0âr gold from electronics; flash-h9ting ground-up circuit boards and theueaOjPqa2ÿ them to recover other precious metqts; and using a cryo-miÁ freeze electronics to separate out potentially reusable resources.
The new study has been published in the journal, RSC Advances.

New Planet...
My apologies for my absence. While I wait to hear back from #83 about the matters regarding her 'Simulated Universe' (as I was so kindly informed of by #76), I have chosen to depart from Herta Space Station to disembark upon the next point of interest on this railway.
Jarilo-VI.
This planet, naturally, is of great interest to me, now that it has emerged back onto the Grand Path and has established communications and trade routes with the other planets once more, I find my attention being brought here, to this very simple planet.
While my Genius-y interests may lie in the technology left over by the bygone eras, and from Qlipoth's influence therein, my own personal interests are rather piqued by the perseverance of the people that reside on this icy tomb of a planet.
Tumblr media
To the asker who requested a.. description of my appearance, I hope this shall suffice. I managed to request someone to take a picture with my phone, and so here this is.
Admittedly, I am not entirely best suited for colder weathers, and Belobog's besides. I have not quite managed to procure a winter outfit, but I suppose I can makeshift a machine to keep me warm anyway. I am unconcerned.
Regardless, this planet is sure to be rife with rather interesting discoveries and a rich history, so I am sure I will go on.. many tangents. I apologize in advance.
If anyone has any suggestions on where to go or what to research, feel free to let me know. I hear they have a museum here, so perhaps it would be better off for me to check there, first...
Thank you all for your time and energy, I find myself quite pleased to have been asked a few questions, even regarding my own personal opinions, so please do not hesitate to ask anything. I have a vast wealth of knowledge that I am unashamed to bestow others with.
May Xipe guide you all.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Festival Hall, Osaka, Japan, March 4, 1976
In a miraculous turn of events, I'll be heading out west to see Neil Young & Crazy Horse in a couple weeks. To say I'm excited is what you'd call a major understatement. What deep cuts will they play? Will Neil debut Greendale II: Sun Green Strikes Back in its entirety? Will Billy Talbot make it to the end of "Like A Hurricane"?! Who can say. But it's going to be good.
To get fired up, let's listen to some Crazy Horse this week. We'll kick things off with what is perhaps my favorite tour — Japan '76! I've written plenty about this era; there's something about the Horse's energy and purity during these shows that just grabs me every time. The audience tapes sound cool as hell, too; those polite Japanese crowds (though Neil has to ask them to hold off on clapping along until the electric set), Neil's unreal guitar work (vicious harmonics everywhere!) bouncing around the big open spaces, the intense thud of the rhythm section.
Over on the Dollar Bin, my brother details how we were introduced to Neil in Osaka via a shady cassette bootleg sometime circa 1993. I can remember listening to it over and over again — blown away by the fact that he was playing "Country Home" back in those days (and "Too Far Gone"!), blown away by the guitars, blown away by the moment when everything cut out and a Mexican radio station cut in for 10 seconds. I was blown away by Talbot's bass playing, too. I was just getting into playing music myself, and I listened Billy's caveman style and thought: "Maybe I could try to do that?" Thirty-plus years later I'm still trying.
What I've got for you here today is not in fact that Osaka tape — it's from the first of three shows that Neil and the Horse played at this venue. But even though it doesn't have the debut performance of "Let It Shine," it's a slightly better recording — and it has an absolutely stunning "Cortez The Killer" closing things out. Dance across the water with me, amigos!

Continueing on from the previous panels, I'm giving the last member of the main cast (2-N.a) some much needed attention today, along with her (and Chara's) boss "Samantha Noir"!
Samantha (more commonly reffered to as "Sammy" by literally everyone), is the head of operations at the "S.A.R.C ESS-76 Orbital Space station". Leading the charge in overlooking global security (basically an outerspace border patrol), and is generally beloved by all employees on the station. Both Sammy and 2-N.a are very close friends, such to the point where they consider each other as sisters! (despite 2-N.a being a literal android). Sammy will be a re-occuring character, like Zeelia was with Aureas previously. Now there's only one more main character to introduce. (and he's not in our main cast's good books either).
