Friday afternoon was marked by another long-awaited USDA report. Before that, participants had rumoured it would be rather bullish and weren’t mistaken.
The 2024-2025 crop had been predicted as follows (in million tonnes):
- Corn: 312.27 (down from the expected 317.84)
- Wheat: 253.61 (down from the expected 257.37)
- Soybeans: 128.65 (up from the expected 120.87)
It immediately triggered substantial hedge fund buying across the agricultural commodities, the largest in the last 3.5 years and, for soybeans, in 12 years (sic!).
Corn's negative net position dropped by 53% [+115,527] - the largest weekly increase since 21 May 2019.
Soybeans' negative net position decreased by 72% [+107,783] - the largest weekly increase since at least 2012 (thanks to Konstantin for the numbers and charts).
Consequently, on the CBOT, corn futures reached their highest settlement of 2024 at $4.69-3/4 per bushel. The most active corn had set a yearly high of $4.72 on Tuesday, though December corn has yet to return to its 2024 high of $5.02-1/4 set on 2 January.
It’s going to be an interesting week across the fertilisers. Some reaction in forward months was already seen at FIS on Friday, but let’s follow the trend. What makes me happy is that it’s all happening before the massive industry gathering at the IFA in Singapore. Let’s hope for some fun while jumping from meeting to meeting, dining and wining.
P.S. I have some free slots in my agenda, so please feel free to contact me for a quick chat in Singapore.

10 Amazing health benefits of soya beans | Five Element "Food from Heaven" | Best Online Organic Store
Tumblr media
Soya beans contain more protein and very little fat. They have been consumed for countless years and play a significant role in Asian diets. They are primarily farmed in Asia, South, and North America today. People eat a lot of soybeans since they are one of the richest and least expensive sources of protein. Additionally, soybeans can be sprouted and consumed, roasted as a snack dish or as a vegetable for a salad. Edamame, or young soybeans, are frequently steamed or cooked and eaten straight from the pod. Many culinary products, such as infant feeds and vegetarian cuisine, use soy meal as a high-protein meat alternative.
Some impressive health benefits of soybeans:
Source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants
All the vitamins and minerals required for one day are contained in one ounce of soya beans. 26 percent of the daily recommended intake of vitamin K, which is good for blood flow and heart health, is found in two ounces of soya beans. Pregnant women should eat soya beans because they are a good source of folic acid, which is crucial for the growth of the foetus. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are abundant in soya beans, support healthy cells and give them the ability to fend off oxidation.
Full of protein
One ounce of soya beans has over 11 grams of protein, making them protein powerhouses. This makes soya beans a suitable replacement for large amounts of meat and dairy products. For vegans who require a lot of protein in their diet as well as those who have heart disease or high cholesterol levels, soya beans are a good substitute.
Aid in weight loss
As a result of their high protein content, soya beans might help people lose weight. Increased protein intake may increase metabolism and satiety, which could lead to weight loss. The fibre and is flavones in soya beans may have additional advantages for fat metabolism and weight loss.
Good for people with diabetes
Soya beans consumption has been associated with a decreased risk of developing diabetes. It is beneficial for preventing diabetes because of their high fibre and protein content, as well as their low glycaemic index. Soya beans prolong your feeling of fullness without significantly changing your blood sugar levels. Your body receives four grams of fibre from two ounces of soya beans, but the amount of fibre needed by an individual varies with age and gender.
Promote heart health
Soya beans may lower cholesterol levels, hence lowering risk factors for heart disease. Alpha-linoleic acid, which is present in soya beans together with fibre and protein, may support heart health. Additionally, the is flavones included in soy nuts act as oestrogen substitutes and antioxidants in your body. Soya beans contain is flavones that help lower atherosclerosis, a significant risk factor for heart attack and stroke.
Magnesium and potassium are abundant in soya beans. These two nutrients play a key role in controlling blood pressure, particularly when it comes to reducing blood pressure.
Lower cholesterol levels
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL; bad) cholesterol levels can be decreased by regularly consuming soy foods like soya beans. Additionally, it has a positive impact on blood lipids like triglycerides. Two substances found in soya beans, daidzein and genistein, may reduce cholesterol levels. LDL cholesterol builds up significantly on the artery walls, which frequently results in atherosclerosis. Clots eventually form because of this build up and can result in a heart attack or stroke. Consuming is flavones lowers this risk by lowering LDL cholesterol levels.
Promote bone health
The is flavones found in soya beans may contribute to bone health and osteoporosis prevention. Genistein and flavones present in soya beans boost postmenopausal women's bone mineral density. This is most likely because they help your body regulate the production of indicators for bone growth.
May reduce menopausal signs
Low oestrogen levels during menopause are the root cause of hot flashes, mood swings, and more symptoms. These flavones, which are included in soya beans and mimic oestrogen, may help to alleviate these symptoms.
May lower cancer risk
Soya beans include a distinct group of antioxidants known as isoflavones, which have potent anticancer capabilities. Genistein and daidzein are two flavones found in soya beans that have received considerable attention due to their potential advantages. Genistein is demonstrated to suppress prostate and breast malignancies. It inhibits cell growth by decreasing angiogenesis and metastasis, two of the leading causes of cancer mortality. Daidzein helps alleviate menopausal symptoms and inhibit cancer spread through gene regulation.

this bird’s nest specialty cafe is recommended by my brother, came here after lunch with cousin to catch up and enjoy some good desserts. the store has really nice interior and exterior, keeping the traditional feel, it’s definitely great for photos.
we ordered the egg tart for everyone, osmanthus jelly, soya bean with glutinous ball and chicken porridge to share. all of the food items has bird’s nest on/in it, it’s not very visible from photos, but you can definitely feel the smooth and jelly texture when eating.
the egg tart is awesome, very thin and fragrant crust with really smooth and soft egg custard in the middle and some bird’s nest on top, it’s highly recommended and definitely my favorite because it’s so delicious. the jelly is really enjoyable with the bouncy texture. chicken porridge is also very good, and actually quite big, so it does fill up the stomach a little, sharing is definitely a good idea.
we also get a pot of chrysanthemum tea to enjoy with our food, the staff is also really friendly, and i love all the bowls and plates design, it’s so classical, it matches with the vibe of the cafe perfectly. it’s definitely recommended as a dessert specialty place.

Morning,
A brief comparison of average week-to-week price changes (thanks to Falcons).

NOLA FOB
March 388.50 392.50 +4.00
Apr 365.00 357.50 -7.50
Not a big surprise, actually. Considering the significant length of producers worldwide, it wouldn't be surprising to see Egyptian products participating in the Indian tender when (or if?) it comes.

Meanwhile, there were historically large short positions placed in the U.S. Soybean market, betting on the market falling. However, they were proven wrong :)
Soybean prices surged by +3.1% on Thursday and Friday last week - the largest two-day rally since last July.
Is there any connection to healthy MOP movements?

Tofu pad thai
Ingredients for 4 portions:
300g rice noodles
250g tofu, extra firm
2 shallots
4 eggs
4-5 spring onions
200g bean sprouts
2 cloves of garlic
1 dl garlic chives
2-3 cm fresh ginger
1-2 teaspoons dried chili flakes
3 tablespoons fish sauce
2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon soya
5 tablespoons tamarind paste (if you dont have tamarind, use 3 tablespoons rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon lime juice, 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar and mix with 5 tablespoons of brown sugar)
sesame oil
(optional) a handful of fresh cilantro and a small handful of coarsely chopped unsalted peanuts, for topping
Preparation:
Mix fish sauce, apple cider vinegar, sugar, soya and 3 tablespoons of tamarind paste. Taste test with tamarind until the sauce is to your liking. Set aside for later.
Cook the rice noodles as per the instructions on the packet. Wash them in cold water afterwards to prevent them from clumping together.
Dice scallots, press and finely chop garlic, finely grate ginger, and finely chop the chili.
Chop the spring onions at an angle. Cut the garlic chives into an appropriate length.
Press the water out of your tofu (in a tofu press if you have one, or using a frying pan or something if you don't) and cut it into cubes.
Heat up olive oil in a wok or pot and add scallots, garlic, ginger, chili and tofu. Fry it quickly, until the tofu has started to get some color. Add noodles and keep stirring. You can add more oil so the noodles don't clump together.
Push everything to the side and add a little more oil to your pot. Crack the eggs and let them fry for about thirty seconds, then mix them with tofu and noodles. Add the pad thai sauce, along with bean sprouts, garlic chives and two thirds of the spring onions.
Serve by topping with the rest of the spring onions, along with fresh cilantro and chopped peanuts.

Have you tried these premium Japanese bean snacks by Kin No Mame (金の豆)? Translated, it means “Golden Beans” in English. They are rather pricy, but the flavours are out of this world. The green pack in the front is Seaweed Beans and the Spicy Beans (I think) is behind it. It is so crunchy and savoury with an umami profile to it. There are many varieties to select from and sis picked these two.
