Id say its well known birds don't do well with lactose but the other nutrients in diary products are super useful for chickens. Historically, and even now it isn't uncommon for chickens to be given surplus dairy products/byproducts because the calcium and fat helps the hens gain more weight and lay better eggs.
Now historically they werent just giving straight milk to birds they were mixing it into their feed ration then feeding it. Milk fed broilers were even a delicacy back then because more people had access to their own dairy animals so the chickens got the dairy byproducts as well.
So basically I just want you to know that feeding some yogurt to your chickens as a treat isn't going to make them spontaneously combust and die, yeah they might have some stinky poos afterwards like some people do themselves after drinking milk but their are much worse things chickens are given that look healthy to people just because its green (grass clippings for example)
There is even some interesting studies that show milk feeding sick chickens can prevent and stop Coccidosis and Necrotic Enteritis which is like huge?? Especially if your an organic farm?
Chickens are domesticated animals and historically were usually fed similar to pigs, they were given the food waste we didn't want and they have evolved to be able to handle that.
Please keep in mind this post is specifically about chickens and not other poultry! I'm also not saying go milk feed your birds I'm just saying that a little dairy product based treat every now and again isn't a bad thing and in fact can be something you can use to help prevent food waste.
Things to keep in mind- Chickens who have dairy products mixed into their feed tend to consume more of that feed. This can be a great thing or a bad thing depending on how you feed and manage your birds. Fatty liver is something you want to watch out for when adding any high fat feed additives to your chickens diet. This is a modern problem for our modern birds since they are more feed efficient than ever.

Insects are eaten in 128 countries, according to a study published this year in the journal Scientific Reports, which found 2,205 species are eaten worldwide. Most of these species are in Asian countries, followed by Mexico, and African countries. In Thailand, India, the Democratic Republic of Congo and China hundreds of species of insect are consumed, with Brazil, Japan and Cameroon each eating 100 or more species. Singaporean chefs will be able to import many creative insect recipes from around the world, where they are served deep fried, on sticks, in noodles, in margaritas, in arancini, tinned, or confit. Insect products are sold round the world in restaurants, markets, supermarkets and from vending machines. The EU is in the process of approving more insects as what it calls a “novel food source”, but to date it has approved only four. Australiahas only approved three species – a cricket and two kinds of mealworm – so far as “non-novel, non-traditional” food sources.
[...]
Why does the UN want us to eat insects? Because it is crunch time climate-wise, and insects are a much more sustainable source of protein than livestock. They have a high “conversion rate”, which means they are efficient at turning plant energy into protein, or in other words, turning what they eat into their own bodies. “Crickets need six times less feed than cattle, four times less than sheep, and twice less than pigs and broiler chickens to produce the same amount of protein,” according to the FAO. They can also be farmed indoors, use less space and water, and produce lower emissions. Because they can be farmed in rural and urban areas in relatively small rooms, they can also be a source of income for people who have less access to land or the training needed to farm livestock.

Today's lunch: a cheesy pasta bake.
But not just any pasta bake: a very BG3 one.
Spoilers for the Shadowheart origin run's epilogue to follow.
If you save Shadowheart's parents during her origin run, you get a letter from each of them. Emmeline's letter contains a recipe for a pasta bake.
[ID: two screenshots from Baldur's Gate 3, showing a letter from Emmeline Hallowleaf. It reads:
"My dear Shadowheart,
Here's the recipe I mentioned the other day. I wanted to write it down for you just in case it slipped my mind again. I can show you myself once you're home. Enjoy your party, and pass on my best to all your friends.
Love,
Your Mother
X
Feast Day Cheese Bake
For the filling:
One small onion, sliced
Half pound of mushrooms, quartered
Red pepper, diced small
Half pound of greens - spinach, peas, courgette, or whatever is in season in the garden - steamed or boiled
Quarter pound of streaky bacon, chorizo or similar. Fried and diced
Half pound of pasta
For the sauce:
Two tablespoons of butter
Two tablespoons of plain flour
One teaspoon of mild mustard from Cormyr. More if you are daring or congested
Ten fluid ounces of milk
Half pound of mature cheddar cheese, grated
A goodly fistful of breadcrumbs
Method:
Soften the onion in some oil, then add the mushrooms and pepper, and saute over a high flame. Combine with the cooked greens and meat, and set aside. Add pasta to a pot of boiling water.
Melt the butter in a saucepan, then add the flour and whisk over a high flame for one minute. Add the milk, whisking until boiling, then add the grated cheese and remove from flame.
Drain the cooked pasta and add into the cheese sauce, along with the cooked vegetables and meat if used. Combine, and pour into an oven-worthy dish (the square stoneware one with the floral pattern should do nicely). Add the breadcrumbs on top, ad well as some extra cheese if you are feeling wicked (your father often is).
Bake unil the top layer is bubbling and golden, or your loved ones are hungrily loitering about in the kitchen.
PS - if you do not salt the pasta water, you can save it to feed to the plants in your garden."
End ID.]
Today I made it with the following modifications:
I don't want anyone's nonna to slap me so I salted my pasta water.
I also undercooked the noodles - after all, they'd finish cooking in the oven.
I used some vegan sausage I had lying around as the meat. I think the one I used was a bit too dry and bland - a more flavorful and fatty, chorizo-like sausage, would have been a better option.
I used spinach as the greens, and instead of cooking them aside of the sauteed veggies, I wilted the spinach with them. If you do so, watch out! The veggies can become watery, as the spinach releases all its water. I was careful to not dump all that water in the stoneware dish when incorporating the ingredients and it all worked well on my end.
Of course I was feeling wicked and topped the dish with extra cheese :3c
Because most of the cooking has happened outside of the oven, I baked the pasta for 15 minutes at 175 degrees Celsius, plus an extra 5 minutes under the broiler. This is the part I'm less sure about - I'm not a great cook, I just follow recipes. I'd be grateful to hear your input here!
The result: a filling, cheesy, savory, veggie-loaded pasta bake. Next time I'll be more generous with the salt in the filling, though.
#i'm not kidding about the dish being filling btw#it's really fucking filling#baldur's gate 3#shadowheart#emmeline hallowleaf#hala.txt

This week is farm animal awareness week
What’s wrong about factory farms?
While it might be tempting to believe the meat on your plate comes from an idyllic childhood version of a family farm the reality is very different.Today the vast majority of our meat and eggs come from large - scale operations, what are often called “factory farms.” In the U.S., more than 21 000 of these industrial operations raise billions of animals each year to satisfy our insatiable demand for cheap meat and eggs.
So just what is a factory farm? And why is the most common source for meat and dairy in this country so bad for animals? Factory farms were created on the assumption that the ‘factory’ concept could be applied to animal farming.
It refers to a method of breeding and raising farmed animals for food with the goal of maximizing production and minimizing costs.
This approach comes at the expense of animals, who are treated as commodities. To house such a large number of animals, these farms intensively confine them to small spaces such as cages or crates. They are unable to carry out their natural behaviours. Most spend their lives inside a shed - never to feel the sunlight or breathe fresh air. This is the reality for farmed animals used for meat, dairy and eggs.
On factory farms, animals live brief lives filled with cruelty and suffering. Pigs and chickens live as long as just a few weeks to several months. Dairy cows live longer, but spend most of their lives standing for hours on concrete floors.
Here are some of the most striking examples of animal suffering on factory farms:
1. Male calves are surplus to the dairy industry
About half of all calves born on dairy farms are killed simply because they are born male and can’t produce milk. These unwanted male calves are slaughtered for veal at anywhere from a couple of weeks to just under a year old. Others are sold at auction - destined for feedlots, also known as concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs).
2. Cages the size of a piece of paper
In the U.S., around 80 percent of layer hens are still kept in battery cages typically sized anywhere from 67 to 86 square inches per bird or less than a standard sized sheet of printer paper.
3. Chickens used for meat can hardly stand
In 1920 the average chicken was slaughtered at 112 days old weighing just over 2 pounds. Fast forward and the average chicken is now slaughtered at around only 47 days but now weighing nearly 6 pounds. That rapid growth and extreme size can eventually cause chickens raised for meat, also called “broiler chickens,” to become unable to stand on their own.
4. Mutilations are common on egg and pig farms
In the U.S., baby piglets are typically castrated and their tails are docked to prevent tail - biting outbreaks at just a few days old — without anesthesia. Overcrowding, forced - lighting and unnatural feeding causes a great deal of stress to factory chickens. These otherwise peaceful birds start attacking and hurting each other. To minimise this behaviour farmers routinely cut off the chicken’s beak. This practice is called ‘debeaking’. Debeaked birds suffer acute and chronic pain in their beaks, heads and faces.
5. Pregnant pigs are confined to small stalls
The standard housing system for pregnant pigs are gestation crates usually 7 ft by 2 ft. These crates provide only enough space for the animal to stand, sit and lay down but not enough room to turn around. About a week before she is due to give birth, the mother pig is moved to a farrowing crate that allows her piglets access for feeding, yet these are no bigger. The pork industry continues to insist farrowing crates are necessary to prevent mother pigs from crushing their piglets, despite the existence alternative systems.
6. Male chicks are redundant to the egg industry
They are killed on the day they hatch. Worldwide, around 7 billion male chicks are culled each year in the egg industry.
If you want to reduce the amount of suffering caused by what’s on your plate, choose peace - choose vegan.

Request: Wednesday Addams x Peter Parker-esque Male Reader. Just a lovably awkward cinnamon roll who’s unexpectedly charmed by Wednesday’s dark and macabre personality. Story wise, he’s trying to confess his feelings with some romantic gesture that’s tailored to her?
A/n: Yea I made it valentines themed… don’t fight me
You were panicking as you were whisking the chocolate you were trying to temper. You scowled at the TV Baking Show, “Double Broiler, my ass.”
You jerked the glass bowl of chocolate off the pot of hot water and walked to the microwave. You threw it in there and pressed the numbers for one minute.
You were trying to make chocolates for Wednesday. You and her were friends, you’d say. You had grown to enjoy being around her.
She did too, or so she must’ve since she always sat beside you in classes. She didn’t talk all that much but that was great for your uneasy heart.
You took another glance at your phone before deciding that you could definitely do it without their help.
Valentines was coming up and that’s why you decided this would be a the perfect time. If she said no, at least you could eat the chocolate. But you really hoped she said yes.
You didn’t know exactly why but there was something about her bluntness, something in the way she treated people she was close to; a sort of reserved care for them. You and her often spent time playing chess and you loved to listen to her cello music.
Honestly if she didn’t say yes to being your girlfriend, you hoped she’d still be your friend. She made you happy and when you realized you like her, you weren’t that surprised.
“The microwave is beeping.”
You nearly jumped out of your skin when a voice jerked you from your thought. You wheeled around saw her.
Wednesday.
She must’ve been walking past the kitchen and heard it.
“Oh!” you walked to the beeping machine and opened it and burned your finger on the hot ceramic bowl.
“What has got you in a fit? Is it a disease?” She said, lol at the counter tops.
You stared at her observing dark eyes. You hoped she hadn’t caught on.
“Ah no, I am the peak of health.”
“You drink energy drinks for breakfast.”
You rolled your eyes as you grabbed a small towel to grab the bowl from the microwave, “Yea yea, anyway, what’s up?” You asked, carrying the bowl to the counter top, next to the molds for the chocolate.
“I was just wondering where you were.” She walked to the bowl and looked at the molds, “And what you are doing?”
You sighed, “I am making you chocolate.”
Wednesday look at you, eyebrow raised. “Why?”
You breathed in sharply, now or never. “Because tomorrow is Valentine’s Day.”
“Why are you celebrating a holiday built on capitalistic ideals and feeds on tempo displays of love?” She asked, looking at the bowl.
“Well… because I like you.”
She kept her eyes on the bowl. The silence was deafening.
“But if you don’t feel the same way, I totally get it and I could ju-“
She dipped her finger in the chocolate and brought it up to taste it. She then looked at you.
“This is milk chocolate so it should be paired with caramel.” She then looked to see another bowl of unmelted Chocolate, “Dark chocolate pairs well with sea salt.”
You smiled, she looked you dead in the eyes, “I don’t want them in a red box. But I like you too.”

How to achieve Performance and Production efficiency in Poultry farming
Production efficiency is achieved when the animal reaches a high level of performance and feed intake while maintaining good health. Feed alone accounts for most of a livestock farmer’s total costs. Optimize your investment in layer hens by ensuring efficient intake of nutrients that translate to robust egg production, good health and enhanced overall productivity.
It involves implementing various strategies and best practices. Here are some key steps to help improve performance and production efficiency:
Optimize nutrition: Proper nutrition is essential for optimal growth, health, and performance of poultry. Consult with a poultry nutritionist to develop balanced and customized feed formulations that meet the specific nutritional requirements of different poultry species and production stages. This includes ensuring appropriate levels of protein, energy, vitamins, and minerals.
Monitor and manage flock health: Regularly monitor the health of the flock through routine veterinary checks and implement effective disease prevention and control measures. Vaccination programs, biosecurity protocols, and proper hygiene practices are crucial in minimizing the risk of disease outbreaks and ensuring optimal flock health.
Provide suitable housing and environment: Ensure that the poultry housing facilities are designed and maintained to provide optimal conditions for the birds. Proper ventilation, lighting, temperature control, and adequate space per bird are important factors to consider. Well-designed housing helps to reduce stress, prevent diseases, and improve overall performance.
Implement biosecurity measures: Establish strict biosecurity protocols to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases. This includes limiting access to poultry houses, practicing proper hygiene and sanitation, controlling visitors and vehicles, and maintaining separation between different poultry flocks.
Optimize production management: Efficient production management practices can significantly impact performance and productivity. This includes careful monitoring and recording of key performance indicators such as feed conversion ratio, body weight, mortality rates, and egg production. Regularly analyze the data to identify areas for improvement and make informed decisions regarding flock management.
Selko - A complete package of feed additive solutions
Selko is the feed additive brand of Trouw Nutrition. Selko’s portfolio consists of feed additive solutions designed to benefit customers active in the entire feed-to-food value chain. These include solutions for feed safety, Salmonella control, gut health, antimicrobial reduction (AMR) and trace mineral optimisation. Selko offers a complete package of products, know-how and services.
Focus on genetics and breeding: Selecting and breeding poultry with desirable genetic traits can enhance performance and productivity. Consult with poultry geneticists or breeding companies to identify and incorporate genetic lines that exhibit traits such as faster growth, improved feed efficiency, and higher egg production.
Continuous education and training: Keep yourself and your staff updated with the latest advancements and best practices in poultry farming. Attend industry conferences, workshops, and training programs to gain knowledge about emerging trends, technological advancements, and innovative management practices that can enhance performance and efficiency.
Implement quality control measures: Maintain strict quality control measures throughout the production process, from feed formulation to final product. Regularly test feed ingredients for quality and nutritional composition, and conduct periodic analysis of finished products to ensure they meet the required standards.
By implementing these strategies and continuously striving for improvement, you can enhance performance and production efficiency in poultry farming, leading to better productivity, profitability, and animal welfare.

Is it safe for cats to eat pizza?
Short answer: no. Almost every ingredient in a human pizza is harmful to cats in some way. Cheese, for example, is dairy and cats are lactose intolerant. This one, people usually ignore because their grandparents were giving their cats milk ALL the time, and it doesn't cause -immediately- noticeable symptoms. But it WILL cause stool problems like diarrhea, which gets more and more serious with repeated feedings. Marinara sauce? Do i have to explain why you shouldn't let your cat have this? It's full of sugar, for one, which cats do not nutritionally require. And tomatoes, part of the nightshade family, are not something cats normally eat and it is in fact TOXIC to their health. Bread is also not good for them, so as you can imagine pizza crust isn't much better. But the good news is, you can still make cat-safe pizza. Depending on how many cats you have, you need 2 to 4 large eggs, and your toppings can be chopped, cooked, unseasoned chicken, turkey, or even just their favorite cat treats. Scramble the eggs in a bowl and then cook them in a large skillet (2 eggs, 12 inch skillet, 4 eggs, 15 inch) until the edges are set, then throw on the toppings. If the skillet is ovenproof, heat it under the broiler for about 2-3 minutes. Make sure the top sets-the eggs MUST be thoroughly cooked before serving. Once the pizza is done, Set it on a plate to cool for about 5 or 10 minutes. Maybe more if it's still a little hot. Cut it into slices, and give each cat its own. Done! Tip: geriatric cats might need their pizza cut into tinier pieces in order to eat it comfortably.
