This is a complex question. I would say the biggest thing to remember is that the term “Taíno” is an umbrella term to reference many different ethnicities of Arawak-Speaking Indigenous Caribbeans. There were many types of Taíno people, including Timucua and Tequesta in Florida, Lucayo in the Bahamas, Ciguayo in Kiskeya and Igneri in Boriken.

As for the term Ciboney, some say it was a separate tribe but the general consensus is that they were a Taíno ethnicity with a separate but mutually intelligible language. They were connected culturally to groups from Jamaica, Florida, Bahamas and modern day Haiti, where as Taínos of the eastern Caribbean were closer in culture. They also had language connections to the Macorix and Guanahatabeys being Waroid languages, aka where we get the term Guajiro. So the Ciboney are a Taino-Arawak group that had ancestrally mixed with the Waroid Guanahatabeys but still maintained moslty Taíno culture.

There were also many other groups who weren’t Taíno. The most well known is the Kalinago, but the Guanahatabey is one from Cuba that is also known to actually have been in Cuba BEFORE the Taínos got there. They had a culture very similar to the Calusa of Southwest Florida. And this is all pre-Colonization, so these groups were already interacting and moving around for thousands of years.

Then with colonization, many Native groups were transported to other places, and in Cuba specifically we have Taíno migrations from the East to the West very early on. We also have Natives from Florida and Mayans from Mexico, and more natives being brought in to cuba and intermarrying with other ethnic groups. These migrations all affected indigenous communities and led to alot of cultural exchange and mixture, as well as loss.

As for Indigenous Cuban Identity, I claim Taíno or Ciboney Taíno because after colonization any remaining Guanahatabeys were assimilated to Taíno Cimarron (maroon/runaway) groups. I consider Guanahatabeys part of my ancestors but I choose to identify as Taíno or simply Indigenous Caribbean. My family all identify as Guajiros, as do I, which is more a lifestyle but definitely has ties to the Classic Taino, Ciboney and Guanahatabey traditions passed down.

As for trusting sources, I would say read EVERYTHING with a grain of salt. Academics often lack cultural nuance and understanding, which can mean alot of their inferences are flat out wrong so try to stick with confirmed info. It is confirmed the Tainos and Guanahatabeys and Ciboneys all moved around and lived in the same parts of the Island at the same time and separately. As for non-academic sources, just be aware that much of what is passed off as Taino or Indigenous Caribbean culture is actually just Pan-Indigenous or straight up a different culture.

Trust yourself, use your intuition and discernment and always be committed to improving and striving for a culturally authentic, fulfilling and respectful practice that is well rounded in both Spirituality and Community! Whether that is with a yukayeke, with the Indigenous tribes you live near locally or with your own indigenous family and friends! So many Yukayekes in the Modern Taíno community try to claim superiority or that they have all the secrets knowledge and the only correct beliefs. You should be weary of anyone trying to restrict you when their own elders often are reconnecting or were just scholars before becoming pop-up Caciques.

If you go to the Cuban version of Wikipedia, when it is active, you can find better information on the Guanahatabey and Ciboney than on American wiki. Try researching the terms ‘Guayabo Blanco’ and ‘Cayo Redondo’ for information on Ciboney culture and beliefs, and how even within this sub-group there were MORE sub-groups. As the Guanahatabeys were not a ceramic culture, we have very little info on them academically. Try researching Calusa beliefs as they had similar environments and were connected through trade routes.

Today, 1 can visit the preserved town & see it's extensive landscaping - that includes Monkey Puzzle trees (with their football sized seeds!), Sausage trees & other exotic plants that members imported to Florida.

"'Disaster was as close as the press of a red button. Four Russian submarines patrolled the Florida coast. US warships had dropped depth charges. The Russian captain was stressed, trigger-happy, and ready to destroy a few American cities. Each sub was armed with a nuclear warhead. Each warhead had the potential to repeat a Hiroshima-level calamity.

Had it not been for the contagious calm of a clear-thinking officer, World War III might have begun in 1962. His name was Vasili Arkhipov. He was the thirty-six-year-old chief of staff for a clandestine fleet of Russian submarines. The crew members assumed they were being sent on a training mission off the Siberian coast. They came to learn that they had been commissioned to travel five thousand miles to the southwest to set up a spearhead for a base near Havana, Cuba.

The subs went south, and so did their mission. In order to move quickly, the submarines traveled on the surface of the water, where they ran head-on into Hurricane Daisy. The fifty-foot waves left the men nauseated and the operating systems compromised.

Then came the warm waters. Soviet subs were designed for the polar waters, not the tropical Atlantic. Temperatures inside the vessels exceeded 120 degrees Fahrenheit. The crew battled the heat and claustrophobia for much of the three-week journey. By the time they were near the coast of Cuba, the men were exhausted, on edge, and anxious.

The situation worsened when the subs received cryptic instructions from Moscow to turn northward and patrol the coastline of Florida. Soon after they entered American waters, their radar picked up the signal of a dozen ships and aircrafts. The Russians were being followed by the Americans. The US ships set off depth charges. The Russians assumed they were under attack.

The captain lost his cool. He summoned his staff to his command post and pounded the table with his fists. “We’re going to blast them now! We will die, but we will sink them all — we will not disgrace our navy!”

The world was teetering on the edge of war. But then Vasili Arkhipov asked for a moment with his captain. The two men stepped to the side. He urged his superior to reconsider. He suggested they talk to the Americans before reacting. The captain listened. His anger cooled. He gave the order for the vessels to surface.

The Americans encircled the Russians and kept them under surveillance. What they intended to do is unclear as in a couple of days the Soviets dove, eluded the Americans, and made it back home safely.

This incredible brush with death was kept secret for decades. Arkhipov deserved a medal, yet he lived the rest of his life with no recognition. It was not until 2002 that the public learned of the barely avoided catastrophe. As the director of the National Security Archive stated, “The lesson from this [event] is that a guy named Vasili Arkhipov saved the world.”1

Why does this story matter? You will not spend three weeks in a sweltering Russian sub. But you may spend a semester carrying a heavy class load, or you may fight the headwinds of a recession. You may spend night after night at the bedside of an afflicted child or aging parent. You may fight to keep a family together, a business afloat, a school from going under.

You will be tempted to press the button and release, not nuclear warheads, but angry outbursts, a rash of accusations, a fiery retaliation of hurtful words. Unchecked anxiety unleashes an Enola Gay of destruction. How many people have been wounded as a result of unbridled stress?

And how many disasters have been averted because one person refused to buckle under the strain? It is this composure Paul is summoning in the first of a triad of proclamations.

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything. — Philippians 4:5 NIV

The Greek word translated here as gentleness (epieikes) describes a temperament that is seasoned and mature.2 It envisions an attitude that is fitting to the occasion, level headed and tempered. The gentle reaction is one of steadiness, evenhandedness, fairness. It “looks humanely and reasonably at the facts of a case.”3 Its opposite would be an overreaction or a sense of panic.

This gentleness is “evident to all.” Family members take note. Your friends sense a difference. Coworkers benefit from it. Others may freak out or run out, but the gentle person is sober minded and clear thinking. Contagiously calm. The contagiously calm person is the one who reminds others, “God is in control.”

Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything. — Philippians 4:5-6 NIV

This is the executive who tells the company, “Let’s all do our part; we’ll be okay.” This is the leader who sees the challenge, acknowledges it, and observes, “These are tough times, but we’ll get through them.”

Gentleness. Where do we quarry this gem? How can you and I keep our hands away from the trigger? How can we keep our heads when everyone else is losing theirs? We plumb the depths of the second phrase.

The Lord is near! You are not alone. You may feel alone. You may think you are alone. But there is never a moment in which you face life without help. God is near.

God repeatedly pledges His proverbial presence to His people.

To Abram, God said,

Do not be afraid… I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward. — Genesis 15:1

To Hagar, the angel announced,

Do not be afraid; God has heard. — Genesis 21:17 NIV

When Isaac was expelled from his land by the Philistines and forced to move from place to place, God appeared to him and reminded him,

Do not be afraid, for I am with you. — Genesis 26:24 NLT

After Moses’ death God told Joshua,

Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. — Joshua 1:9 NIV

God was with David, in spite of his adultery. With Jacob, in spite of his conniving. With Elijah, in spite of his lack of faith.

Then, in the ultimate declaration of communion, God called Himself Immanuel, which means “God with us.” He became flesh. He became sin. He defeated the grave. He is still with us. In the form of His Spirit, He comforts, teaches, and convicts.

Do not assume God is watching from a distance. Avoid the quicksand that bears the marker “God has left you!” Do not indulge this lie. If you do, your problem will be amplified by a sense of loneliness. It’s one thing to face a challenge, but to face it all alone? Isolation creates a downward cycle of fret. Choose instead to be the person who clutches the presence of God with both hands.

The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? — Psalm 118:6 NIV

Because the Lord is near, we can be anxious for nothing.

This is Paul’s point. Remember, he was writing a letter. He did not use chapter and verse numbers. This system was created by scholars in the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. The structure helps us, but it can also hinder us. The apostle intended the words of verses 5 and 6 to be read in one fell swoop.

The Lord is near; [consequently,] do not be anxious about anything.

Early commentators saw this. John Chrysostom liked to phrase the verse this way:

The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety.4

Theodoret of Cyrus translated the words:

The Lord is near. Have no worries.5

We can calmly take our concerns to God because He is as near as our next breath!"'

There's a huge war going on right now in the rings and it is about 7 million against 7 million so far their losses about 20 million each side and it's pretty big cuz they're leaders and if they lose this 7 million each and we estimate their leadership will be about 10% Max warlock and 15% pseudo empire that's right they're all here and they're all fighting. Gulf Breeze

 Gulf Breeze is the island between Pensacola and Pensacola Beach. If king for a day, we’d make some changes. One would be to rename Gulf Breeze to Pensacola Island. But then, whoever heard of Pensacola. You got Pepsicola, Cocacola, Royal Crown Cola, and Diet Rite Cola. I have never seen Pensacola on a shelf anywhere.

After having been to Destin, Florida in December, and Pensacola in April, we have determined that northern Florida is (for us) better in the summer and fall months. There are too many storms, high winds, sea mist and cool-ish temperatures. We managed to enjoy some lengthy beach walks and a few hours of beach sits, but ….

St. Augustine brags of being the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in the contiguous United States. We love the qualifiers. Of course, Hawaii would have the very oldest. And no doubt argument could be made for an Inuit or Eskimo group in Alaska, or a few Indian tribes somewhere in the lower 48. (Except for them being routed.) But St. Augustine (1565) followed Pensacola (1559) by six years. Ah, but the continuous part. Pensacola was stormed out for a bit and disqualified by that qualifier. Too bad. Lost your infamy. (Hate when that happens.)

We almost missed the old town, only finding it when we searched for the British car show. Yay! The Christ Church, same name as the one we documented on our Philadelphia visit, is the oldest church on its original site in Florida. Ah, two qualifiers. It’s Episcopal. Wonder if the one in Philly is Episcopal?

We did see the site of the earliest church service in Florida (1559), and quite possibly the first Christian service anywhere in the U.S., even the southwest where Spaniards ventured northward. Alas, the Florida site was most likely not continuously anything.

Our pet sitting experience was a bit short of perfect. Alas, we cannot recommend two-year-old male Golden Retrievers. This one could pull your arm from its socket in the quest of a squirrel. He could also knock you silly insisting on continuous petting. (This high-maintenance pooch gets the prize of all our experiences.)

Our advice to this owner is that they should restrict sitters to people between the ages of 18 and 18 ½. And meth users welcomed – they will need the energy and the meth might be the best way to sleep.

Our favorite part was the National Seashore beaches south and east of the developed beaches and condominiums. Far better seclusion and fewer people … and most beaches prohibit pets! Yay!

After spending time in 2 Florida panhandle cities, we are more convinced than ever that our best-kept-secret beach at Gulf Shores, AL stands up to whatever charms of the better-known tourist beaches. Gulf Shores’ vibe (outside of their city festivals and spring break) suits us to a T. The bonus is that Gulf Shores is slightly closer to home too. Win-Win.
