When visiting the many islands that comprise the Fire Nation, it was not uncommon for their royal majesties Fire Lord Zuko and Master Katara to don the traditional dress of the host island.
Almost as soon as I had finished working on the art piece I did with Zuko and Katara in Thai inspired outfits, I knew I wanted to do something similar but with outfits inspired by the Philippines (or outfit, sorry Zuko I find women's fashion more interesting than men's).
Before jumping into the commentary, I'll stress that this design is fantasy inspired by the Philippines. Although I did research, it is not an accurate representation of Filipino national costume, nor is it meant to be.
This was more challenging in some ways than the Thai piece, because even though the Thai piece required a ton of detail work, I was creating a design much closer to its real world inspiration. In this case there wasn't a specific "look" I was trying to recreate, instead I wanted to create a design inspired by the traditional fashion of the Philippines. However, 1). pre-colonial fashions were very different from the Spanish inspired styles that arose during colonialization and that have since evolved into modern traditional Filipino attire, and 2). the Philippines is home to many different indigenous groups, each of whom have their own traditional costumes.
Originally, I wanted to exclusively look to the pre-colonial period for inspiration, but when I looked only at pre-colonial designs, I found I missed the iconic silhouettes seen in modern Filipino dresses. So I widened my research scope to see how I could combine pre-colonial with elements of modern fashion.
For pre-colonial styles, the best historical resource is the Boxer Codex. Karakoa Productions was also a helpful resource to see how pre-colonial looks were being interpreted from historical illustrations and descriptions into real world garments. I looked at modern designers from the Philippines to see how they were playing with the design of terno (which often feature the iconic butterfly sleeves I wanted to include). One design I was really inspired by was a look worn by Filipina actress Kathryn Bernardo.
Both written and illustrated accounts of the pre-colonial era in the Philippines emphasize the prevalence of golden jewelry, so Katara has a gold necklace, bracelets, hair beads, and belt. Katara's belt is inspired by two main sources. The first is an extant kandit (royal belt) woven from gold wires in the Museo ng Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas's pre-colonial gold collection. The dangles on it are loosely inspired by the beaded belts made by the T'Boli people.
With Katara's skirt, I tried to blend the longer style of skirts seen in the Boxer Codex, with a striped pattern inspired by the numerous woven designs I found in traditional indigenous attire. The specific photo I used as inspiration was labeled as being from Kalinga, but I found similar weavings from other groups as well.
The flowers in Katara's hair are flowers found in the Philippines - sampaguita, waling-waling orchids, plumeria, hibiscious, and santan. She also wears her dual moon-flame tiara.

illustration Pauline Baynes (1970) Chapter 10: The Hermit of the Southern March of The Horse and His Boy of the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis (First Collier Books Edition)
The Good, Not Safe, Lion
In C. S. Lewis’ first Chronicles of Narnia Book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Lucy heard great stories of Aslan the Lion (C. S. Lewis’ Symbol for Jesus Christ)… Lucy asks Mr. Beaver:
Is He safe?
Mr. Beaver answers:
Safe? Don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.
That exchange was so good. C. S. Lewis is a master when it comes to arguing against extremist ideologies. Some, like most Pagans, believe that God is all wrath and judgment. On the other hand, others believe the complete opposite. God is all grace. You can sin all you want and He’s OK with it.
Quite frankly, a lot of Christians today believes the later. And this was just C. S. Lewis reminding us:
Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.
When you come to Him ask for repentance and accept His salvation, He’ll forgive you and accept you in His Kingdom… If you don’t, He’ll bring down judgment on you in His own time.

In my endless quest to uncover the lesser-known jewels of my own Province in the Philippines, I stumbled upon a pristine paradise in the heart of Southern Leyte that's not widely mentioned in the typical travel guides. Nestled within the tranquil barangay of Camansi in the municipality of Tomas Oppus, Mabawod Falls emerges as a sanctuary of natural beauty and serenity, largely kept under the radar. My adventure to this secluded wonder was nothing short of magical, offering a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Journey to Mabawod Falls
Tomas Oppus, a charming 5th-class municipality with a warm population of 16,990 souls, serves as the gateway to this hidden gem. Despite its modest size, the area is rich in untouched natural landscapes, with Mabawod Falls being one of its crown jewels. The journey to the falls is an adventure in itself—a 45-minute ride from the town proper, accessible by any form of transportation and a 15-minute trek to the falls. As the scenery transitioned from urban to rural, the anticipation built up, promising an extraordinary encounter with nature.
The Enchantment of Mabawod Mini Falls
Upon arrival, I was greeted by the soothing sounds of cascading waters, set against a backdrop of lush greenery that seemed to blanket the area in a serene embrace. Mabawod Falls, although referred to as "mini," packs a majestic punch with its fresh, crystal-clear waters and undisturbed natural scenery. It's a place where time seems to stand still, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the tranquility and beauty of the natural world.
A Favorite Among Locals
What makes Mabawod Falls truly special is its status as a beloved spot among the locals. It's a testament to the community's appreciation and respect for their natural surroundings. The falls provide a cool, refreshing respite from the tropical heat, making it a perfect spot for a leisurely dip or a picnic with friends and family. The unspoiled environment and the purity of the water reflect the community's commitment to preserving this natural wonder for generations to come.
A Call to Responsible Tourism
As travelers seeking to experience the beauty of hidden destinations like Mabawod Falls, it's crucial to adopt a mindset of responsible tourism. It means respecting the natural environment, minimizing our impact, and supporting local communities. By doing so, we can ensure that these hidden gems remain vibrant and accessible for future adventurers to discover and enjoy.
Final Thoughts
My visit to Mabawod Falls was a reminder of the Philippines' abundant natural beauty, much of which remains off the beaten path. It's a call to explore beyond the familiar and to discover the extraordinary wonders that lie waiting in the more secluded corners of the world. Mabawod Falls, with its serene waters and lush surroundings, is a destination that truly captures the heart of what it means to travel—it's an experience that enriches the soul and fosters a deep appreciation for the natural world.
To my fellow wanderlust-filled souls, I extend an invitation to embark on an unforgettable journey to Tomas Oppus in Southern Leyte. There, nestled within its lush landscapes, you'll find the enchanting Mabawod Falls—a treasure awaiting your discovery. This hidden gem promises to be a highlight in your collection of travel tales. For a mere 200 pesos, you can secure a cottage, while an environmental fee of 10 pesos helps preserve the beauty of this pristine location. Remember, the most unforgettable adventures are often tucked away in the least expected places, waiting to be unveiled by the curious and the bold. So, pack your bags, set your spirit free, and let Tomas Oppus reveal its wonders to you.

TODAY: The delegation of various sectors from Southern Tagalog gathered at [University of the Philippines Los Baños] Carabao Park in a celebration of Pride Month. This year's theme is, “LAVARN [Fight] LGBTQ+ of Southern Tagalog! Makibeki [Dare to struggle] for land, wages, jobs, inclusive space and rights!”
ST Pride: “Pride started as a riot. The most important thing is having rights in our country. Let's continue to makibeki for everyone!” SIKAD Laguna dedicated a song about the ongoing struggle of the LGBTQ+ community.
UPLB USC: “The spirit of pride as a protest is alive and well to demand land, wages, jobs, inclusive space, and rights!” UPLB USC Chairperson Gio Olivar also encouraged us to stand up and claim the spaces that belong to us.
Lakapati Laguna emphasized the attacks that members of the LGBTQ+ community continue to experience in universities in Laguna, as well as throughout the said province... “It is in our hands to forge a society without discrimination. A society where we can love freely, where all genders and classes are free.” [...]
Dakila PH Collective for Modern Heroism (DAKILA): “What is supposed to be a celebration becomes a grim reminder that the fundamental rights of the [LGBTQ+] community is elusive. Pride should not end today as the community continues to face harsh realities.”
Kabataan Partylist ST: “Basic rights will always be denied to us by those in office. Let's continue to discuss, organize. Let's show what a lot of young people can do together in Southern Tagalog.”
Bahaghari Batangas: “It's not only students and youth who are at risk. Discrimination continues all the way to the factory. Don't turn a deaf ear to them, listen to the call of the gay community!”
UPLB Babaylan: “History is witness to LGBTQ+ people fighting back. LGBTQ+ or not, let's fight the policies and social plagues together. We 'dasurv' a society that is colorful, accepting, and free.”
Anakbayan Quezon: “The crisis of the entire country is palpable in Quezon province. Until this type of society is not dismantled, Pride will remain a protest.” [...]
PAMALAKAYA Cavite: “If we continue to be afraid, no one will protect our rights! Gays must not waver and give up the fight. Be strong! We should not be afraid.” [...] Delegates marched from Carabao Park, UPLB to Junction, Los Baños where the program continued.

We've had enough of the English-speaking internet defaulting to USAmerican terms that we are all forced to learn against our will. Here are the new default settings:
"Southern" no longer means Texas. It now refers to the Philippine island of Mindanao.
"The Midwest" is now Harare, Zimbabwe.
The default legal system is now that of the devolved administration of Scotland.
"College" is an educational institution for 13 to 18 year olds, as in some parts of New Zealand.
The "president" is that of Guyana, currently Irfaan Ali.
If you use these terms to refer to something in the USA then you have to specify or else we won't know what you're talking about and you'll sound like an idiot. Thanks!
