I'm thrilled to be a participating artist for "Here We Are: Young, Black, and Indigenous Women in the Art World". Answering questions about the pieces I selected for the exhibition was really nice because it was a reminder of how much I enjoy doing what I want to do in my practice and experimenting. My older brother went to the opening reception with me and took most of these photos. I was so inspired by the notebooks in the Process -> Project exhibition at @jamaicaartscenter 🎨 It features the work of the @southeastqueensartists and is curated by @damaliaabrams & @rejinl who also put together an amazing tutorial on creating your own sketchbook. I was unable to attend in person, but the exhibition is viewable online and it was an incredible experience getting to peek behind the scenes of these brilliant artists. I too keep a sketchbook. Most recently I created one specifically for pre-work on “One Paw Dog”, my 2020 QCA New Works grant project. I have a very active 1-year old & often the only time I had to work was in the car. So I experimented with my work on a small scale in this 4x6 sketchbook before recreating it for the finished piece. Here are some of my “behind the scenes” experiments for “Chapter 6: The Violets” starting with a photo of the final drawing for comparison. To Be At Peace Amongst Yourself, 2016 Even though this painting is not a self-portrait, I do remember having to confront who I am and who I was becoming while producing the piece. Isolating myself and stepping away from a space that felt like home in 2016 was more difficult than saying goodbye to my mother in 2014. Thankfully through the grace of God, I overcame those feelings of hurt and disappointment. Six years after making the painting, I feel it necessary to self-isolate and recall the positive benefits that do come with being and standing alone. I've donated my piece for JCAL's 50th anniversary art auction, which is now live 💜. "Black Men Guided" is a series in which I am focused on portraying Black men in a positive light to counteract the stereotypical images of them in the media. I notice these harmful depictions when it pertains to the circulation of black on black violence and police brutality. I wanted to create a new story of the men I see in my community every day. I chose to use a bright color palette for both paintings to celebrate their individual style. Their sneakers and outfits reflects their innate defiance towards a status quo that has labeled and “othered” them. Black men coming out of the obscurity and stepping into the foreground of self is something that I am capturing. As a heterosexual female, I decided to make portraits of black men living in their God given purpose and building generational wealth for their family. Last night I had the honor of giving my immense admiration for Dr. Margaret Rose Vendryes during Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning's Golden Anniversary Gala. @jamaicaartscenter wished to surprise @camioneera with the Margaret Rose Vendryes "Divas" Prize Commemorating a Lifetime of Art and Impact. They assigned me the responsibility of keeping this a surprise, and later asked me to write a speech.
