"Construction of the “largest wildlife crossing in the world” passed a significant milestone in April placing the first girders over an 8-lane freeway near Los Angeles to preserve the local mountain lion population.
After years of tireless work, erecting the first horizontal section of the 210-foot-long crossing was an historic moment for the National Wildlife Federation, the Caltrans highway department, and many private and public partners.
“We all cheered when the crane lowered the first concrete beam across the freeway, as we truly saw the bridge starting to take shape,” said an excited Beth Pratt, the California Executive Director of National Wildlife Federation.
“This structure is a testament to us all wanting a future for wildlife and mountain lions in the Santa Monica Mountains.”
Moving forward, up to 82 additional concrete girders will be placed, with each beam weighing between 126 and 140 tons. As these critical horizontal supports are placed, the structure will ultimately reconnect two long fractured global biodiversity hotspots in the Southern California region—providing safe passage for not only the cougars, but bobcats, deer, lizards, and coyotes, as they move between the Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills of the Santa Susana mountain range.
Tumblr media
[Note: The setting looks pretty rural in that rendering, but the wildlife crossing is actually only five minutes from the Los Angeles city border and the densely populated San Fernando Valley.]
For drivers on the 101 Freeway in Agoura Hills, the construction is interrupting traffic from 11:00 PM to 4:00 AM on one side of the highway each week (Northbound or Southbound). The FAQs can be found here.
CBS news estimates about 1,500 of these wildlife passages have been built both over and under major highways and rural roads across America.
Watch CBS’s recent feature that highlights crossings over America’s longest highway, US 90, which runs across the northern states, and how a new US grant program is paving the way for more crossings…"

Triple Crossing
These images come from an intriguing spot if one is a rail enthusiast: the triple crossing at Tuscola, Illinois.
This is where the Illinois Central double track ran in a north-south direction; the B&O crossed moving east-west, and the C&EI (later MoPac) cut across at an angle to the previous two lines.
The first image shows an overview of the track layout as seen from the highway overpass nearby—the old track arrangement is still in play here, but preparations are being made for the simplified alignment soon to come. This will merge the B&O and C&EI prior to crossing IC, thus having fewer diamonds to maintain.
The latter two images show a southbound train of the IC: I shot the first still from the highway overpass while the second image was taken from track level, standing on the B&O. These were taken in the so-called death-star era, of which I have very few images.
Three images by Richard Koenig; taken January 1991.

Looking ahead from the front row in the upper level on a former NP dome car affords a "only in Alaska" scene as the southbound Coastal Classic leans into a gentle curve just north of Portage. This train operates daily during the summer tourist season and is a great day trip opportunity to and from Seward for residents and visitors alike. It is highly recommended for anybody wishing to experience parts of Alaska you can't see from the highway. June 2008

SUMMARY: Five interlocking tales of terror follow the fates of a group of weary travellers who confront their worst nightmares - and darkest secrets - over one long night on a desolate stretch of desert highway.
Mod Sus remembers seeing the ghosts seen in previews one time in some Youtube Short (yes those that explain the movie poorly) and got really excited but then for some reason lost interest. Watched the trailer again for this poll and yeah they're not interested the rest of the movie.

Do you pray? Can you send energy out into the universe? If your spirit works like that, send some out for a fallen skateboarder. No matter what, wear a helmet when you're on a skateboard or a bike.
tw death, tw accident, tw head injury
(my read mores, as always, are optional)
I was taking Jay to a friend's house, driving southbound down a major street (three lanes each way). Just past an intersection, there was a car with hazards on in the southbound left lane and a skateboard in front, a car in the southbound middle lane with hazards on and a woman out of the car talking on the phone, and two guys with skateboards directing traffic into the right lane.
I saw a man laying in the median, completely motionless.
Jay didn't look up from his phone. I decided not to turn this into an impromptu driving lecture.
I dropped him off at his friend's house, which took less than five minutes from where we were.
On the way back, a few blocks from the accident scene, an ambulance passed me going lights and sirens. It was going southbound, toward the highway and the trauma center. (The other hospital it would have gone to is northbound, but they don't specialize in trauma)
I said out loud to the ambulance, "Be safe and do good work."
As I passed the scene, I saw the car in the left lane. It had a big dent in its right front fender, indicating a huge hit.
A police officer was closing the road to southbound traffic. Police don't close major roads when someone's gonna be okay.
A hot return to the trauma center, a big dent, and a closed road; this guy's probably dead. Either that, or he has irrevocably life shattering head trauma, since he wasn't wearing a helmet. Poor guy.
So. Pray. Send your good energy out into the universe. A skater needs it tonight. And wear a helmet.

At least 15 people are dead and 10 injured in a "mass casualty collision" that occurred Thursday on a highway in Canada, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
The crash happened on the Trans-Canada Highway between a semi-trailer truck and a bus near the town of Carberry in southwestern Manitoba, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
The collision occurred around 11:40 a.m. local time. The semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on Highway 1 when it struck the bus, which was traveling southbound on Highway 5, as the bus crossed the eastbound lanes, police said.

"Hello, driver.
There is a concert you wish to attend in Dallas, Texas tomorrow evening. But... before you may rest your tired body in your Marriot hotel room tonight, you must complete the ultimate test.
Currently, you are traveling southbound on Interstate 235. The objective before you is simple: Drive the remaining 19 miles through and around Dallas on this highway, and arrive at your hotel approximately 30 minutes before sunset.
However, this road trip is not free from danger. Surrounding you on all sides are hundreds of animalistic and ravenous Texas drivers in their F-250 megatrucks and sport sedans. Several of them are already passing you, despite the fact that you are driving 20 miles over the established speed limit of 75. Be wary. This is far from the worst behaviour you can expect from them in the miles ahead.
Make it to the hotel and enjoy your concert, or pay the ultimate price and take the highway to hell.
Live or die, the choice is yours..."

tonight's patch making session results :3 a few more ones for the dog vest, plus horror movie ones for the pants <3
[I.D. A photo of 5 assorted DIY punk patches. The top two read, respectively: service dog do not pet, and, do not release. Two of the bottom ones are matching patches based off the movie Annihilation, which are mirrored copies of each other featuring the lighthouse, with minor differences. Another one is a minimalist series of dog teeth. The last is a Southbound movie inspired one, with a blank highway sign. End I.D.]

JJ and I decide we are better off abandoning our plan of following the water and walking deeper into the city to try and find a highway. Eventually, we do, and we reach the far side which is moving southbound. It's only about an hour before someone pulls over in an SUV to pick us up. It looks like a family car, which eases my nerves only slightly.
"You kids alright?" The woman in the passenger seat asks after rolling down her window. "You shouldn't be hitchhiking, you know. It's dangerous."
"Yes ma'am, but we're in a bit of a pinch, you see." JJ says, walking up to the window as I keep my distance. It's a middle-aged man and woman in the vehicle, they remind me a little of my parents. Maybe that's my guilt talking, though.
"You're not fugitives, are ya?" The man asks and JJ laughs, without skipping a beat.
"No sir, just, uh..." He glances in their back seat, and then gestures back at me. "Her parents are not my biggest fans at the moment, if you get what I mean. We're trying to make our way to my mom's place, down in the keys. She's got more room for the three of us there." JJ smiles, leaning on the ledge of the window.
"Oh honey, you're pregnant? Let's get you out of the sun. Hop on in you two, we can get you there." The woman says, glancing at me with worry in her eyes. I smile thankfully at her, and JJ smiles as he comes back over, helping me limp to the car.
"Sorry about the mess back there, kids." The woman's husband laughs and we both smile and nod, and JJ pushes the car seat over to the far side.
"It's no problem. We really appreciate the ride." I reply as JJ climbs in and closes the door, and I give him a look. He can always think on his feet, but I'm not sure how making me look more vulnerable could be super helpful.
"So, what are your names?" She asks as we pull back out onto the highway.
"Jesse." JJ responds, looking over at me.
I have a moment of panic. What is the absolute opposite of my name? "My name is Summer." I say, thinking on my feet.
"Are your parents from the area? Real beach people, they sound like." The man says, glancing back at me in the mirror.
"Actually New York." I lie, "They just wish they were beach people."
"Well, it's nice to meet you, Summer and Jesse. I'm Rachel, and my husband's name is Cole." The woman smiles. "You have come an awful long way if you're from New York."
"What are your kids' names?" JJ asks, trying to steer the conversation.
"Well our oldest is Theo, and the little one is Anna." She explains. "He's five and she just turned one."
"That's lovely, Anna is my sister's name." I smile. I'm picturing her in my mind, but the memories quickly turn sour when I realize what she must be going through right now.
"Are you at the point where you're thinking about names yet?" She asks, turning to look back at me.
"Well," I laugh slightly, looking over at JJ for some kind of help as he wraps his arm around my shoulder.
"She doesn't think so, but I've already got my heart set." He grins, and she nods wanting to hear. "I'm thinkin', if it's a girl, Juliette. But if it's a boy, definitely we have to go with Booker."
I smile a little as I look at my friend. "I like Booker." I agree. "Maybe better as a middle name though."
"That's an... Interesting choice." Cole says and his wife reaches over and hits him.
"I think it's just precious." Rachel says, smiling back at us.
JJ nods at that, looking awfully pleased with himself.
"If you don't mind me asking, how old are you both?" She asks.
"Seventeen." I answer, but I probably should have lied about that one too.
"We'll both be eighteen by the time the baby comes." JJ says, nudging me a little. It takes everything in me not to roll my eyes or shove him. He's just dragging this out to annoy me now.
"Summer, honey, what happened to your foot? I noticed you have a bit of a limp there." Rachel says, thankfully wanting to move on from the subject. Unfortunately, I think saying I got hit by a car while I was running from the scene of a murder is not a good answer.
"Oh! A bit of a funny story, honestly.." I laugh a little to buy myself a few seconds. "I tripped over a bike laying on the sidewalk, and you know how expensive health insurance is, so I'm walking this one off."
"Tell me about it." Cole laughs.
"I know I'm not your mom, but you'll really need to get that lined up before baby comes. You'll be in a world of trouble without it." Rachel says worriedly.
"Of course." I nod. "J... I mean Jesse," I catch myself before I say his full name, "has a job lined up in Key West that has benefits too so..." I trail off.
"I'm really glad we won't be walking all that way with her on that ankle, so thank you again." JJ says.
"Well, you two are in luck because we are on our way to the keys anyways. We left the kids with my parents there and we're going to get them, so we can take you as far as Key Largo." Cole says and JJ and I look at each other.
"That would be amazing." I smile back at the man driving. "We don't have a lot of money, but I can pitch in for gas."
"Oh please, it's only an hour and we were going there anyways. Don't even worry about it." Rachel waves me off.
"Would you mind if we borrowed a phone? I need to text my mom and let her know where we are." JJ says and Rachel nods.
"Of course, hun, take mine." She says, unplugging it and handing it back to him. I watch as he types in Kie and Pope's numbers for a group message.
UNK.: hey guys, hear from JB yet? P4L
It's a few minutes before we get a response.
K: Holy shit, JJ?
UNK.: yes ma'am at your service
K: Thank god you guys made it- we thought you were dead for sure
P: We did hear from him and Sarah, they both made it too.
I smile and nudge JJ, him looking down at me and I can tell he's just as relieved to hear that as I am.
UNK.: are they still on track for the plan? brownsville?
K: no, their boat flipped and they ended up in Nassau
UNK.: we're in florida, on our way to the keys. should we head to the bahamas?
P: probably not a good move, someone tried to turn them in so it's hot there
UNK.: sounds to us like they need a jj escape plan
K: no
P: no
We look at each other while we're both thinking the same thing, what is our move here? The most obvious answer is to go and pick them up. I think JJ will agree. The hard part will be finding them.
UNK.: b in touch <3

Shanty Bay Go-Karts
You can find this week's brand new video here!!
https://youtu.be/zcoU5sy2eCA
Let's start this one out by taking a look at some exteriors!!
This building was once home to a number of businesses. Being located along a major highway, I would have imagined it was once a very busy place.  After having talked to a few former employees, they confirmed that those businesses were indeed busy, so the question remains...why did they all close?
In last week's episode we explored the abandoned Coffee Time Restaurant.  In today's video we will be exploring the rest of the building, including a former McDonald's, a Shell gas station convenience store, a party room and the go kart track and mini putt.
Looking through street imagery, I could see that the building was not very well maintained as far back as 2012 and as time went on, it just got worse and worse with holes beginning to appear in the roof.  Coffee Time was the first to go in 2009.  The McDonald's closed in late 2015 and around the same time an "under new management" sign appeared in the gas station window. That didn't seem to help matters since the Shell station and store would later close in 2018. Finally in 2019 the go-kart track and party room would close as well.  There was also a mini putt but that looks to have been closed for far longer.
I suspect there were a number of reasons it failed.  It is located along a divided highway with good visibility but was only easily accessible by the southbound traffic.  There is also a sizeable city located not more than 10 minutes down the road with far more options.  Last, the owners tried to lease the empty spaces where the coffee shop and restaurant used to be but were unsuccessful.  With those two food options gone, the location was no longer a one stop shop.
Since then the building has deteriorated even further, the roof has developed more holes and the vandals have taken over.  In the spring of 2022 the entire building now sits boarded up and likely awaiting the wrecking ball before the property is redeveloped.

Thousands of people held protests across the US on Monday condemning Israel’s attack on Gaza, shutting down airports and disrupting traffic in major cities from New York to San Francisco. A portion of the Kennedy Expressway into Chicago O’Hare international airport, one of the US’s busiest, was blocked off by protesters calling for an end to the violence. NBC Chicago reported that some travelers were seen getting out of their cars and walking along the highway to the airport. The Chicago aviation department said the protests caused substantial flight delays. Many protesters were arrested following the incident. In the San Francisco Bay Area, two major highways – the southbound 101 across the Golden Gate Bridge and northbound 880 in nearby Oakland – were disrupted during morning rush hour as demonstrators echoed calls for a ceasefire and an end to US support for Israel. All traffic lanes have since been reopened. Protesters were also arrested on New York’s Brooklyn Bridge and in Philadelphia, where several streets in the city center were blocked off.

Dawson Creek, BC (No. 3)
Upon entering the war, the United States decided to build a transportation corridor to connect the US mainland to Alaska. In 1942, thousands of US Army personnel, engineers, and contractors poured into the city – the terminal of rail transport – to construct the Alaska Highway. The highway was completed in less than a year; even after the workers involved in its construction departed, population and economic growth continued. In February 1943, a major fire and explosion in a livery barn, packed with road-building supplies including dynamite, caused serious damage to the center of town; five people were killed and 150 injured. Dawson Creek became a RCAF station during WWII, in September 1944. The station disbanded in March 1946.
By 1951, Dawson Creek had more than 3,500 residents. In 1952, the John Hart Highway linked the town to the rest of the British Columbia Interior and Lower Mainland through the Rocky Mountains; a new southbound route, known locally as Tupper Highway, made the town a crossroads with neighbouring Alberta. The next year, western Canada's largest propane gas plant was built and federal government offices were established in town. In 1958, the extension of the Pacific Great Eastern Railway to the Peace from Prince George was completed, and the village was re-incorporated as a city. Between 1951 and 1961, the population of Dawson Creek more than tripled. The RCAF center reemerged on October 1, 1956 and was declared functional in 1958. It was disbanded a final time in March 1964.
Growth slowed in the 1960s, with the population reaching its all-time high in 1966, but area population increased. In the 1970s, the provincial government moved its regional offices from Pouce Coupe to the city, Northern Lights College opened a Dawson Creek campus, and the Dawson Creek Mall was constructed. Several modern grain elevators were built, and the town's five wooden grain elevators, nicknamed "Elevator Row", were taken out of service. Only one of the historic elevators remains, converted to an art gallery. Since the 1970s, with the nearby town of Fort St. John attracting much of the area's industrial development and Grande Prairie becoming a commercial hub, the town's population and economy have not significantly increased.
Since 1992, the city has undergone several boundary expansions. One expansion incorporated undeveloped land in the southeast for an industrial park and a Louisiana-Pacific Canada veneer factory. The city extended sewer and water lines to the location; however, the area was not developed and with the factory only half-built, L-P Canada abandoned its plans. A business making manufactured homes bought the factory and completed its development in 2005. Another expansion incorporated the existing oriented strand board factory in the northwest corner of the city, while further incorporations have included undeveloped land to the south and north.
