ok so in the span of like 5 hours:
- the south korean president declared martial law (the first time since s korea stopped being a military dictatorship in the 80s)
- claims his political opponents are insurgents working on behalf of north korea and communism
- declares that all political activity must cease (inc the national assembly/parliament), all media must be under the control of the military, and all protests/strikes are illegal
- the opposing political party immediately assembles at the national assembly in the middle of the night
- holds an emergency vote that goes thru 190-0 to declare the end to martial law (while barricading the entrances to prevent the military from entering and removing them)
- the president concedes an hour later
- civilian protesters in the streets are calling for the impeachment & arrest of the president
please feel free to add details/correct me
as of 2:40 EST Dec 3 2024

I'm so proud I was part of this crowd😍😍
Yesterday on 8 December 2024, Koreans had the biggest ever protest since a series of impeachment vigils 8 years ago. Reports say around 1 to 1.4 million gathered. I'd never thought we got to do this again. But here we are. All the crowds vowed together in our hearts that we won't stop until not-my-president, not-our-president, and botched coup d'etat leader Yoon Suk-yeol is taken down in the most miserable way possible.
The protest was more than just a solemn and serious action for the greater good. It was also about festivity for democracy we all love. Hundreds of thousands of korean pop music fans, mostly in their 10s to 30s, brought their lightsticks they use for concerts and other music events. I would dare to say a club scene was there at the parliament plaza💜🩷💙🩵💚💛🧡❤️🤎
Get a taste of what it felt like from this short footage I took:
Some close fellow TVXQ fans and I also brought our lightsticks to "join the party"💋❤️🍓🍑 I mean literally.
In just a couple of days, we've been bombarded by strings of frustrating and terrifying news. Emotional pain and distress, and coup-induced sleepless nights ensued. I got a beautifully sound sleep last night. The protest was where we all could heal our souls via solidarity.
I'm joining even more protests next week, and the next, and the next💋 until the lunatic pig Yoon gets politically slaughtered💋💋❤️

Happy Yoon got impeached day!!!🎉🎉🎉
The National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon Suk Yeol with 204 for, 85 against, 3 abstention and 8 invalid votes.
(Fyi Yoon isn't impeached just quite yet, his case needs to go through the Constitutional Court of Korea (think like the american Supreme Court) first, but I still think this warrants celebrating.)

Mmmm okay I'd rather team up with a woman who wears makeup but organizes with women and outwardly spreads a pro female message than a person who hides behind an anonymous blog while demanding ideological purity from other women and feminists.
Jesus fucking christ. I'm fucking tired. I haven't worn makeup in like 4 years out of political and laziness reasons, and I'm still fucking sick of this shit.
It doesn't have to be a choice between admitting makeup is anti feminist OR accepting women who wear makeup can play an active role in female liberation. Fuck this community is embarrassing sometimes.
#if youre having a whole internal fucking conflict#about whether a woman who is objectively making a good point and spreading a feminist message#is worth listening to#because she has mascara on#i seriously dont know what to fucking tell you#but you dont give a shit about actually furthering the cause if you are more concerned with ideological purity#than action#radical feminism#radfeminism#radfemblr#like how fucking far are we really going to get if we are focused first on making sure every radfem has given up eyeliner#fuck#ironically this is exactly the kind of over focus on individual choices#that has poisoned the west and held us back from progress#do you think south korean feminists made sure every protester was makeup free before taking to the streets?

no one gets beyond evil, my liberation notes, my country and the youth of may like i do
#shows so dear to me shows that have touched something so deep within me shows that continue to make me feel#beyond evil for it's intricate exploration of siblinghood and grief and community#my liberation notes for that lacking sense of excitement about life and feeling so unlovable and without purpose#my country for the deep complex relationships during times of political unrest and what it does to people that love each other#youth of may for the depiction of cruelty and outright oppression and violence imposed by a government on their own people#a scene i always think of is when the two boys break out of their sports camp & encounter the protest. then soldiers shooting at the crowd#one of the boys says north korea has invaded. it cant be south korean soldiers why would they shoot their own people. the naivitë kills me#this and han kang's human acts set around the same period of time. the student protest in may 1980#where the teen character at the beginning of the book asks why the dead bodies are wrapped with the flag#and why the national anthem is sung for them. when it was soldiers of that same country that killed them. for no reason#idk idkkkkkkk need to go to sleep#also i really really need to get back into reading and watching stuff instead of wasting time on tiktok. i say this every day#nesi rants

Martial law in a temper tantrum over things like these protestors:
(second guy intentionally stopped and posed for me to take a picture of the sign and him. His hand is doing the "cut it out" gesture, hence the blur. He checked to make sure I agreed so I gave him a thumbs up.)
imagine being a Korean person awake at like one in the morning trying to accept that the president of South Korea actually just tried to go full dictatorship by way of an emergency martial law because he was basically having a political temper tantrum and every agency and corporation in the country is all hands on deck, code red mode on everything and the military is being deployed and then the assembly revokes the martial law and then the president is like lol nevermind and now you have to get ready to work at your shitty job on a Wednesday
#like i didnt know a whole lot about the south korean president before stumbling into this large protest but#I sure started learning and also#i see why everyone hates him lol#okay actually i had a vague awareness that people didnt like him and there were scandals and possible protests beforehand#but i saw this protest and was like AH time to read more#~martial law~ what a clown

South Korean President Yoon faces second arrest attempt
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol faces a new arrest attempt for declaring martial law, according to Reuters.
The Presidential Security Service (PSS) this week fortified the compound with barbed wire and barricades to block access to his residence in an upscale neighbourhood known as Korea’s Beverly Hills.
Yoon faces criminal investigation for so-called insurrection over his failed attempt to impose martial law on 3 December. The move led to the issuance of the first arrest warrant for a sitting president. He also faces an impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court.
On Wednesday, one of Yoon’s lawyers, Yoon Kap-keun, said the president could not agree to the arrest warrant as it was issued by a court of the wrong jurisdiction, with the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) having no authority to probe him.
On Tuesday, Oh Dong-woon, head of the CIO for High-ranking Officials, apologised for failing to arrest the president last week after a six-hour standoff with hundreds of PSS agents and military guards at the compound.
We’ll do our best to accomplish our goal by thoroughly preparing this time with great determination that the second warrant execution will be the last.
In last week’s attempted arrest, the police and CIO were outnumbered by over 200 PSS personnel, some of whom had firearms, as well as soldiers assigned to provide security for the president.
