Freddie: Are you the farmer? We've gone on holiday by mistake. We're in this cottage over there. Are you the farmer?
Roger: Stop saying that Freddie, of course he's the fucking farmer. [To the farmer] We're friends of Brian May, we desperately need fuel and wood.
Farmer shakes his head.
Roger: Brian May, you must know him. Tall man with big hair, owns the cottage. Farmer: Ay, seen the tall man with big hair. London type. Queer sort. Think his name's Teddy Conway or something.
Withnail: Conway?
Farmer: Ay, Conway. He hasn't been up year for couple of years. Last time I saw him, he were here with a great big telescope Roger: Yeah, that's him.
Freddie: Listen, we're bona fide, darling. We're not from London at all. Could we have some fuel and wood?
Farmer: Ay, I could bring you up some logs later but I've got the cows and that to feed first.
Freddie: When?
Roger: Shut up Freddie. That would be very kind of you.

Hiiii aurora dearest how are you? I come to your doorstep to ask for some film recs <3
hiiii gi dear !!!! im ok, hope u are too <3 and omg i loooove this question truly what an honor that u came to me... i dont know what youre looking for in terms of genre or mood so ill give u some of my favourites hoping youll find something u like... sorry this is going to be long and a bit all over the place
may 2002 is just... so relatable to me? its a peculiar lonely weirdgirl spin on frankenstein and its just... yeah. almost painful to watch
crash 1996 is obviously one of my fav movies of all time i talk about it all the time on here but its just so perfect in my opinion. hits the perfect sweet spot between strange and erotic
the teenage apocalypse trilogy by gregg araki + the living end 1992... araki is again a huge influence in my life and my fav director so ofc i had to include him... the dialogues are iconic and very funny and offbeat but also strangely deep and sad. the outfits are great. the music is always perfect (and the source of most of my current music taste). the stylishness and the what the fuck factor make the whole thing unforgettable
past lives 2023 ive seen a couple of days ago and its soooo. quiet and devastating and about missed connections and the nature of human relationships. beautiful
phantom thread 2017 is a classic in my eyes and so tender in a very fucked up way i love it so much
y tu mamá también 2001 so fucking sad but also so sensual. gael garcía bernal said recently that this is one the last really sexy movies and i agree with him wholeheartedly
velvet goldmine 1996 i mean its my fav movie of all time... fake biopic about david bowie and a bunch of other stars of the glam rock era. insane and perfect and with my fav soundtrack of a movie ever and todd haynes is a genius in my opinion and since i mentioned him... his last movie may december 2023 was so good. its heavy though!!
withnail and i 1987... my god. this is apparently seen as a cult classic comedy in the uk which is crazy to me because it sort of made me miserable. it is very funny but also when its not its bleak as fuck i love it

One really really nice thing about having Arthur back in the system is that he is now a trauma holder for the stuff with my friend Sebastian that I don't really talk to any of the people who knew Seb too and I don't know anyone else who went through anything similar as what we went through with him.
But the thing is that now Arthur remembers a timeline that's a cross between what happened with Sebastian and an AU we have with Arthur's source character, and it means he's gone through basically the same thing I did. And he doesn't mind talking about it with me because he has the attitude that if being traumatized in the way that he is can help someone, even in the same system, he'd like to help.
Sebastian's deathday is today and we're going to watch his favorite movie, which I got into because of him and is now my favorite movie. Withnail and I. Most of our system members from that time who we still have in the system are going to watch it with us and have been co-con today. It's nice to have them around.

Tom Ellis Richard E. Grant Join Netflixs Thursday Murder Club
EXCLUSIVE: Richard E. Grant (Withnail & I), Tom Ellis (Lucifer), Geoff Bell (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Paul Freeman (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Sarah Niles (Ted Lasso) and Ingrid Oliver (Doctor Who) are the latest names to have joined Amblin and Netflix’s movie The Thursday Murder Club. They join a star-studded British and Irish ensemble including Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Ben Kingsley, Celia Imrie, David Tennant, Jonathan Pryce, Naomi Ackie, Daniel Mays and Henry Lloyd-Hughes.  Filming is underway on the buzzy crime-comedy from writer-director Chris Columbus. Pic follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught in a real case. The four members of the club will be played by Mirren (ex-spy Elizabeth), Kingsley (ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim) Brosnan (former union activist Ron) and Imrie (ex-nurse Joyce). Producers are Jennifer Todd and Chris Columbus. Executive producers are Holly Bario, Jeb Brody,  Eleanor Columbus and Jo Burn. The film is based on Richard Osman’s 2020 novel of the same name. Osman previously described the lineup of actors in the movie as “the greatest British cast assembled since the [Harry Potter] movies.” He might not be wrong. Osman is known to millions in the UK as the presenter of BBC game show Richard Osman’s House of Games and spent years as quizmaster on daytime quiz Pointless. In industry circles, he is known for a long association with Endemol UK (now part of Banijay UK), rising to Creative Director at the Big Brother company before leaving in 2020. The film is the latest to be produced as part of Netflix and Amblin’s film partnership, which also includes the upcoming Carry-On starring Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton. OUT NOW
TIBSHELF ‘Understander’
https://cruelnaturerecordings.bandcamp.com/album/understander
Ever wondered what a track that samples Albert Ayler, Jimi Hendrix, Terry Riley, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and 'Withnail & I' might sound like? Then look no further.
Lee Etherington (founder of TUSK Festival/ former member of tape manglers Posset), delivers his second album of sampledelic plunderphonics, twisting and screwing a smorgasbord of sound into fresh sonic glory.
"cutting and pasting all sorts of bizarro source material into brain-melting sound collages. Check if you dig People Like Us, Nurse With Wound, John Oswald, Bladder Flask et al. Probably best not to listen to this on acid.” - Norman Records

Richard E. Grant talks about the woman who served as his surrogate mother reconnecting with his first admirer and his daughter
Richard E. Grant is an actor best known for playing Withnail in Withnell and I. The 65-year-old talks about the woman who served as his surrogate mother, and reconnects with his first love and daughter. “I underwent a psychoanalysis at the age of 40 and it led me to understand why my mother did what she did.”attributed to him:Trunk Archive / Snapper Pictures my mother and my father I had a severe split when I was 10 years old. She got up and left. My mom was very athletic – she played a lot of tennis and golf – and she was 24 when she hosted me. If she had her life back up again, she might not have had a baby so early. My father I soon remarried and my stepmother, Anna Marie, was a very nice woman. I owe it to her for bearing an 11-year-old who was not her own. I saw my mom Intermittently over the years, but moved from Swaziland, where we lived, to another country. She underwent a psychoanalysis at the age of 40 and it led me to understand why she did what she did. She still lives in Africa and I talk to her once a week on Skype. My closest memories Of a woman I truly loved and remained friends with until her death at the age of 92 was Polly Barnes, a Scottish lady who was my English and French teacher at school in Swaziland. She taught me to play the piano and became a surrogate mother, in a way, the person whose opinion I value very much. It was fun and taught me everything I know about classical music. loading I had a crazy crush On an American girl named Betsey Clapp in 1969, when I was 12 years old. I tried to make perfume for her birthday because I couldn’t bear to buy it. I boiled gardenia and rose petals in sugar water to dazzle them. I hug her. Neil Armstrong had just landed on the moon, so to me in Swaziland, all American was weird. in 2018, I went on a chat show to promote the movie Can you forget me? And I talked about Betsy. Within half an hour and thanks to social media we were in touch. That was unusual. woman She inspired me so much, and Barbra Streisand was the first character that I liked. This is a one-way love affair that I’ve had since 1969, although I’ve met her a few times since then. Everyone had told Barbara that she couldn’t make it and that was in tune with me. She and Donald Sutherland didn’t look like traditional superstars, and if these two can make it happen, why not try doing it. Source link Originally published at Melbourne News Vine

PRISONER C33 REVIEW THE TIMES
Tumblr media
Prisoner C33, Toby Stephens’s excellent one-man rendition of Wilde’s incarceration in Reading and the way it tortured him, physically and mentally, wasted no time in confronting this squalor, the camera panning to the effluent-filled bucket within two minutes. Wilde implored the warders that it hadn’t been emptied in three days. “The smell will kill me!” he said, to deaf ears.
You would have to have a heart of stone not to be hugely moved by this play, written with skilful but harrowing intensity by Stuart Paterson and performed equally so by Stephens. Of course when you have the full canon of Wilde’s bons mots and one-liners to draw upon it makes the job easier, his light wit lifting the cruel spectacle of this wretched artist in his dark, stinking cell.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stephens played two Wildes, one the broken prisoner, skinny with his hair cut; the other the Wilde of yore, foppish and adored in his burgundy velvet jacket. These two selves in conversation with each other meant that Stephens had double the work to do, but it allowed the play to explore Wilde’s brilliance and contradictions, as a man who claimed to despise materialism yet admitted, “I am fascinated by the rich.”
Occasionally Stephens’s theatricality edged towards the “Withnail”, but it was mostly beautifully judged and perfectly delivered. His imploring speech, stating, “We cannot continue keep on living like this, governed by fools who think only of wealth and of war and the size of their estate,” still feels perfectly applicable.
