this might be a really stupid question but i do not know Music Stuff but um. what instrument is a baritone
Eyyy! a question I am prepared to answer!
So. A trumpet is, like, the standard brass instrument. Its tubing, without pushing any valves down, is about 4.5 feet long, so when you push air through it, you get a partial series based on B-flat 3, which is right below the middle C on a piano.

But trumpets are kind of in a stupid range, so people wanted to go lower. So to go an octave lower, they have to double the length of the tubing, and that gets you a whole family of low brass instruments:
Trombones, baritones, and euphoniums!

(The slide and the valves have the same purpose: to make the tubing longer to be able to hit other notes. The slide lets you just extend the tubing, and the valves redirect the airstream into little tubes that end up making the total length of the path a bit longer.) All three of these have the exact same length of tubing; if you put the same air through, the same notes come out. The difference is in the shape of the tubing.
In a trombone, if you unwind and straighten it out, the tubing would be pretty evenly cylindrical, right up until the very end. This gives it a bright and edgy tone.
In a euphonium, the tubing starts to flare out much earlier, so it's a lot more conical. This makes the tone a lot softer and darker and more mellow.
A baritone is right in the middle; not as cylindrical as a trombone, not as conical as a euph.
However! These are the concert models; these are for sitting down in an indoor space where it's alright for the sound to go upwards because you don't want to overpower the (WEAKLING) woodwinds and strings.
When you're outside, marching, you want the sound to go forwards and smack the audience in the face. So they made marching models!

The one on the left is a bugle-style marching baritone, and on the right is a bugle-style marching euphonium. Same length of tubing, same range, but different shape of tubing, so different tone, so the parts are written differently. (and different size. having marched both, the baritone is much kinder to arm and shoulder muscles.) These are used by drum corps and by most high schools that march dci-style shows.
... and then there's this idiot instrument.

This is a traditional-style marching... euphonium? baritone? nobody really knows. You could argue that it's a euphonium, because the tubing starts to flare out fairly early, but I've only ever heard them called baritones, so..??? It's used by a lot of colleges and high schools that are going for more traditional styles.

hello! if you're taking topic requests, maybe you could do something about musical instruments? i'm a musician myself (i play both western instruments and traditional korean instruments!) and i feel like i would freak tf out if i couldn't even find a piano. maybe in twst there are a bunch of "common" instruments that don't exist in the real world, and vice versa? thank you!!
Hm, that’s an interesting request! I think there are a lot of instruments that exist in Twisted Wonderland that also exist here. In fact, here’s a canonical list of instruments that exist in Twisted Wonderland that also exist here (that I remember off the top of my head):
Violin (Harveston event, Malleus mentions knowing how to play one), guitar (Carter’s club instrument), bass guitar (Lilia’s club instrument), drums (Kalim’s club unstrument), flute (Harveston event), piano (Harveston event), pipe organ (Spectral Soirée event), bugle/trumpet (White Rabbit event).
That being said, I don’t know if some Earth instruments have made it to Twisted Wonderland. For example, there doesn’t seem to be an Australia analogue in Twisted Wonderland. Did the didgeridoo make it? Also, are there any instruments played/created by magic that could not exist in our world?
The most fascinating idea is merfolk music. Presumably, their instruments and musical styles would be different, since sound travels differently underwater. Would land dwellers find their music strange and hard to listen to? Did Azul and the Tweels have to adjust to land music once they got up here? Do merfolk try to adapt their music so it sounds better for human listeners to keep the ‘feel’ of it when recording it to be performed on land and vice versa? Does Azul sometimes play merfolk music in the Mostro Lounge for a piece of home sometimes? Much to consider!

Ch 59: Yum cha, fire and literal bubble tea

This chapter was just all-round beautiful. Atmospheric, poetic, visually vivid and full of music - although sometimes also uncomfortably realistic (unnaturally hot weather; mountain fires).
The red mountain made me think of landscapes I’ve seen. The idea of drums and bugles saving people from the sound of the sizzling sun sinking into the sea made me think of the din of musical instruments at Chinese New Year. The dragons in the streams and the paulownia trees were simply beautiful.
And the music! There is so much music. Yu’s footnotes say that three of the poems are set to pre-existing Chinese tunes. I tried to dig them up. They’re at the bottom of this post, for anyone interested.
Well, let’s begin. As we know, the travellers come upon a strangely sweltering part of the landscape. Bajie thinks they must be at the Edge of Heaven, but Wukong points out they can’t possibly have travelled that far. They approach the house of a local man, introduced to us through the ‘Not Quite’ poem.
I loved this poem. It reminded me a little of the Phantom Tollbooth or of Lewis Carroll. (Of course, that may well be because I don’t know much, if any, non-western poetry or literature with which to compare it. Do let me know if you know any Tollbooth-esque literature or poetry from other cultures.)

He tells them they’re at the foot of the Mountain of Flames.
I didn’t realise the flaming mountains were a real land feature in China - minus the pyrotechnics. Apparently travellers along the Silk Road avoided them. The soil temperature has been estimated at 66.8°C (152.2°F). (Thanks Wikipedia.)

Tripitaka is overwhelmed at the mere thought of the heat. He turns pale and falls silent - right back to his old ways:

Wukong, being the ADHD kid that he is, gets distracted by a vendor with a cart, and goes to buy rice pudding with a hair-turned-copper-coin.
I don’t know which kind of rice pudding this means, but it sounds delicious. Maybe this?

But really I’m just thinking of this - which has nothing to do with rice or pudding, but everything to do with me getting excited when a Chinese food cart rolls around:

Wukong calls bullshit on the place being hot all year round. He figures if they can make rice flour for rice pudding, there have to be both hot and cool seasons.
And so they find out about Immortal/Princess Iron Fan, whose fan can extinguish the fires and even bring rain.
Cut to the woodcutter on Jade Cloud Mountain, who has a real chip on his shoulder about calling her ‘immortal’:

The 'Raksasi' thing may or may not be a jerk move, because apparently it just means ‘female demon’:

Wukong gets nervous about having to confront another angry relative of Red Boy, and the woodcutter schools him on how he should never be nervous as a Buddhist:

I somehow love the total lack of strategy here. “Okay. You have every reason to think that this demon will refuse to give you what you want. Just disregard that entirely, and go in there confidently.”
Wukong finds Iron Fan, gets his ass kicked by her, and takes back some of the condescending thoughts he’d had about her as a woman fighter. We go from this:

He’s bailed out by Bodhisattva Lingji, who conveniently has a Wind-Arresting Elixir. Wukong returns to unwarranted pride in his manhood in no time:

I mean, the only reason he can withstand the wind is that a woman was nice and gave him an elixir. So I'm not sure what it has to do with him being a man.
He sneaks into Iron Fan’s stomach via her tea:

In the ultimate Trojan Horse move, he prods her insides til it hurts. I must not have been the only one thinking of yum cha when the rice pudding came up, because the dim sum theme continues:

Iron-Fan puts on a good pretence of panicking and surrendering, but keeps her cool. She gives Wukong a fake iron fan. He doesn’t realise until he’s dragged the whole of Team Tripitaka up the Mountain of Flames and made the fire worse.
Tripitaka cries.

Ah, dear Tripitaka. He wants those scriptures. He wants them SO MUCH. And if he can’t get them, his heart is going to break.
Meanwhile, Bajie is just laughing his ass off because Wukong lost all the hair from his thighs in the fire.
The guys are at a bit of a loss. The only way to the west is to pass the Mountain of Fire, but nobody really knows what to do next. Clearly Wukong is no longer feeling so confident about kicking Iron Fan’s ass, cos he’s not even talking about trying a third time.
While they’re kicking around, they’re approached by a mysterious man, who turns out to be the spirit of the Mountain of Flames. He tips them off about what to do next.
And that’s it for this week. I’m excited for the next chapter, because I came across some ceramic art online that gave me some possible hints about next week. I’ll refrain from posting it, but we’ll see next week.

Ghost - French horn. The saddest brass instrument in my opinion. He found one as a kid in a resale shop and bought it not realizing how hard it is to play. But over a couple of years he got it down. Bro can make a grown man cry with how he plays, it’s beautiful
Bby gurl Gaz - trumpet. This man loves early jazz music. He learnt it just so he could play some of his favorite songs. Loves Louie Armstrong

Konig <3 - bass guitar, he wanted to start a garage band in high school but things never work out. I feel like he also played tenor sax and trombone for his school band because his mom made him join and he actually like it
Horangi - doesn’t play any. Thought instruments were for losers. But after hearing everyone else play, he’s been considering learning electric guitar
Makarov - piano. But he only a plays classical songs from the 1800s. Most people wouldn’t believe him if he said he could play since no one has ever heard him. But don’t let the fool you, he’s almost as good as a piano player as he is a criminal
Rudy - flute. Has gotten called a homosexual because of it. One of his family members played it (probably a sister or cousin) and taught him how to play it. Despite the teasing he loves the flute and enjoys playing it.
Alejandro - literary everything. (Me to) saxophone, guitar, piano, violin, chello, trumpet, banjo. Everything. He is a natural when it comes to music.

Yuu apparently is great at the bugle. Manifesting Musically talented Yuu. Both great with a flute and a bugle.
So interestingly, it can go either way: if you click the option where Yuu essentially says, "Oh I'm not confident..." they won't sound good. But if you click that they're good at music, then Yuu will play the bugle well.
It's intriguing that the few times we see Yuu's talents is when it's with music OwO so the flute and bugle, notably they're instruments involving the mouth. Some people have pointed out the connection between Yuu's musical talent and the twistunes, which makes me go 👁👄👁 damn it would have been cool if all twistunes involved a woodwind/brass instrument. Maybe we might see other instruments that Yuu may or may not be good at in the future though. 👀

what else do you think gil can play besides the western concert flute and the [electric] guitar from the character songs? (@goldammerchen)
:D To be clear/have a disclaimer: This is all my personal headcanon for stuff that, in my opinion, makes sense for Gil to be competent - not necessarily excellent, but competent - with.
As a generally militaristic nation it makes sense he would have been trained with these for both musical and tactical purposes (ie, for marching and battle):
Trumpet/bugle/etc
Drumming
In canon it's heavily implied he learned the flute to play with Fritz, which is consistent with Fritz' own real life habits of having a nightly concerto with someone playing alongside him. As he's implied to be a close companion to Fritz, Gil likely would have been expected to learn these:
Flute (as mentioned)
Harpsichord (which is also heavily featured in Mein Gott, it's the metallic piano-sounding instrument)
Cello or violin
Now for the things I have less direct reasoning or evidence for:
Vocally in canon he's rather 'rough', but I do think it's reasonable to assume that while serving as a knight/monk it's likely he would have been trained to sing in a choir. It's entirely possible he can sing 'clean', and just prefers the rougher vocal stylings of modern metal/alternative/industrial genres. Marching songs also would be right up his alley and I see him being able to harmonise well with other people be it on the march or in a pub or tavern.
I see him as someone with an incredibly strong sense of rhythm and timing, being a militaristic nation always on the march and all - I think he'd be a natural bassist or rhythm guitarist if he wasn't on lead or drums. It's entirely possible he could have picked these up during the GDR era when underground/illegal metal bands flourished, in my opinion
Overall I think Gil's pretty musically competent and his own perfectionist nature leads him to want to master things to his own ludicrously high standards so he's very (perhaps weirdly) skilled in a (perhaps baffling) array of musical skills

Nickname: As an adult, no one doesn't call me by my given name, unless you count on Tumblr. Which, to be fair, is the name I gave. So nothing now. But as a kid, it was Bear.

Amount of sleep: Fitbit says between 7 and 8 per night usually. But sometimes it's like 4. IDK. Never enough.
Dream job: I just had coffee with a friend this morning and chatted about this very topic. When I was younger I wanted to be a marine biologist, but these days I don't know what I want to be doing when I grow up. I know it isn't what I became.

-production DOES however work very nicely for night of the hunter so I will give em that, one of my faves on the album.
-I was expecting more from man with the melody IM SORRY it just wasn’t giving what I’d hoped. same with mustangs (which I was super gassed for), I think it gives more in the live recordings I’ve seen, tho it feels more a production thing with that? Would love to hear it recorded properly but sloppier tbh.
-baron’s claw? lovely stuff. getting daniel darc vibes tbh. also grace/wastelands vibes which is never a bad thing.
-I have a friend is one I found myself enjoying a lotttt, has some old libs vibes in it. (quite like last post on the bugle tbh) instruments on that also sound a bit more shambolic to me which is what I Like.
-wasn’t quite sure on the additional backing vocals for songs they never play on the radio, still not convinced, but the end bit?????? dogs howling, them chatting, silly silly messing around singing bits together. oh god yes that honestly makes it. lovely to hear.
-top tracks for me are night of the hunter, baron’s claw, merry old england, I have a friend, and shiver.
-overall I’m really excited to see the songs live, and I think the live style will work rlly well for me personally (I love unpredictability and chaos and improv more than anything)

Chapter 2: A Breath of Fresh Air

Chapter 1
Bucky’s heart pounded as he entered the music room, the familiar but almost-forgotten smell of polished brass and well-used sheet music meeting him like a warm embrace. The space was larger than he’d expected, filled with soft echoes of past rehearsals and pieces of music lingering in the walls. It felt alive, like it had seen countless performers pour their hearts into every note. He took a deep breath, hoping it would steady the nerves tugging at him.
“Hey, Buck!” Steve called from across the room with a warm smile. The drummer was setting up, his focus and energy unmistakable. “Didn’t think you’d actually make it.”
Bucky returned the smile, his tension easing just a little. “Yeah, well… you twisted my arm,” he replied, only half-joking.
Steve gave him an encouraging nod from where he was, gesturing for Bucky to find his seat. “Grab a spot next to Sam,” he called, flashing a thumbs-up.
Sam was already there, adjusting his music stand with an easygoing grin on his face. “So you’re the famous trumpet player Steve’s been telling us about, huh?” he teased, nudging Bucky as he sat down. Sam played the bugle, and there was an infectious excitement in his voice. “Can’t wait to see you in action.”
Bucky chuckled nervously, gripping his trumpet case. “Yeah, let’s hope I can still manage a few notes,” he murmured. It had been so long since he last played—almost another lifetime. His mind drifted to memories of the army, where he’d first learned the trumpet, the sound of it giving him a sense of grounding even amid the chaos. But now, with his metal arm and a long stretch of silence between him and the instrument, he didn’t know how he’d fare.
Across the room, Natasha waved at him, her flute resting on her lap as she chatted with Wanda, who was preparing her clarinet. Clint sat nearby, adjusting his bassoon with a focused expression, glancing over to share a friendly nod with Bucky. Peter, sitting with his percussion instruments, gave him a thumbs-up, looking thrilled to see him there. Bucky raised his hand in return, feeling a bit of his apprehension ease with each familiar face he spotted.
As he settled in, a warm laugh rang out from nearby, clear and bright like a melody in itself. Bucky looked up and spotted a young woman with wavy brown hair, her eyes alight as she laughed at something Natasha had said. She had an easygoing warmth to her, gesturing as she spoke, her hands moving as animatedly as her voice.
Sam leaned over, nodding in her direction. “Tara,” he said quietly. “She’s… well, she’s someone you’ll want to meet. Plays the oboe, and she’s one of those people who lights up a room, y’know?”
Bucky nodded, his curiosity piqued. Tara’s energy seemed magnetic, adding a new brightness to the already lively room. For the first time since he’d arrived, he felt a hint of eagerness mixing in with his nerves.
Before he could take in more, Nick Fury’s voice cut through the hum of voices in the room. “All right, people. Let’s get this session started. We’re here to make music, so I hope you’re all ready to work.” His commanding presence was softened by a hint of amusement as he took in the group, his hands clapping for attention.
Bucky adjusted his grip on his trumpet, lifting it to his lips as they started to play. The first note came out a little unsteady, but he adjusted quickly, finding his balance as he played, letting the music carry him. Each note felt like a piece of himself he was rediscovering, something long lost but deeply familiar.
The music filled the room, voices merging as the players found their collective rhythm. For a moment, Bucky closed his eyes, feeling at home again. He’d forgotten how grounding it felt, how playing took him out of his head and into a flow he couldn’t find anywhere else.
He stole one more glance at Tara, who was focused on her sheet music, seemingly unaware of the impression she’d already made. As they moved through the piece, he couldn’t help but feel a spark of something new, an excitement he hadn��t expected to find here.

What fic surprised you with how much interaction it got this past year? The Incident. I didn’t think I’d get so much interaction from kidnapping Silver and Shy’s AU? Or even New Apartment New Landlord. I’m surprised that people outside the popcorn-devouring crowd who watched Silver and Shy bounce reblogs off each other would care about it?
What fic surprised you with how little interaction It got this past year. Either Betrayal? Or Minish Gifts, see below.
So with both most and little interactions—the gifted fics all did and usually do really well. Partially because in gifting them, it brings all the really popular writer’s readers over to read it? The not-gift fics never do as well. I probably need to tag better or something but… that’s effort and brain is more interested in screaming.
Do you have playlists for any of your fics or wips?
I could really use one. I have a Spotify playlist that’s just instrumentals (mostly OSTs and fan-covers) that is nice when I’m writing or in the mood to write. That’s about as close as I can get. Anything by Rozen or TSFH is great.
I do have specific songs tied to things though. I have to pull up Sound the Bugle if I’m trying to work on Town of Traitors for example.

kai is a singer! she plays like..almost every instrument ever bc I think that’s funny she is a one man band- but her favorites are the piano, guitar, and anything with a brass sound! She actually plays the trumpet/bugle horn in Revised Reprise and the saxophone in Abstinence Camp!
she likes reading fantasy books and comics! Mostly on the younger kid side to avoid any romance sub plots. she also likes reading manuals on her favorite cars/parts.

If all of the Reds and Blues and Freelancers played instruments, what do you think they'd all play? All I can think of is Doc/O'Malley on violin (probably gets really into it like Devil Went Down To Georgia), Sarge on trumpet (cuz bugles but can actually play it nice too), Florida on ukulele, and Maine and Locus taking up classic guitar and cello respectively for therapeutic reasons and ending up getting really into it.
Those all sound really good!
Hmm... it depends on what kind of music they're going for. I think in general, most of them haven't had the chance to really practice much music, but in season 15, we saw some of them formed a band! Carolina sings (so good), and it looked like Grif and Tucker were both on guitar, while Caboose did drums (if I remember right).
Sarge is certainly musically inclined, in regards to how much he likes to make up songs about killing stuff he doesn't like. I'm gonna say he knows how to play guitar, generally classic-rock/folk/country with what he does, but he surprises people by listening to wide range of musical genres (he's got a big collection that includes heavy metal and hip-hop). Oh, and he rocks on the harmonica!
Grif is good with guitar, and he'd probably be good on drums as well, but I'd like to think he secretly hides a gift with piano. Like, he can just naturally do really amazing/complicated pieces with ease (but when he was younger, little jerks he went to school with called that "sissy music", so he was awkward about sharing it with anybody). He's good with a uke too, and a very nice singer (again, if he's not feeling embarrassed)
Simmons WISHES he could play something like the violin or cello... but he just doesn't have rhythm, and gets too frustrated to practice properly. He doesn't have a bad voice, but he's a nervous mess if he tries to sing in front of people. He's able to get decent on the piano (with some help from Grif), and since he's a tech guy, he finds his own niche with electric keyboards (nothing too extravagant, but still very good)
Carolina is the one who had fancy music lessons when she was younger, but she's out of practice (she used to be good on clarinet and violin). She gets back into music and singing, picking up some guitar and piano... but surprises everybody by randomly deciding to get REALLY good at the harp (just to show off, haha)
Doc and O'Malley would certainly learn to play violin and fiddle, but I think they'd also practice different kinds of unique instruments; the kalimba, the tabla, the veena, the dholak, the balafon, and various types of flutes (they both also know how to make small little instruments with woodcraft; various things that Doc knows from his own traditions and heritage). They also are very good singers, Doc being especially into acapella/using voices to simulate instruments (though, O'Malley tends to ham it up for "villain" songs~)
Kai is more into mixing music, creating beats, maybe making something new with samples, and she is a killer DJ (dance music, electronica, techno remixes, and all similar variations. she's pretty good at changing up the "tone" of a song, but still keeping the melody strong)
Church is kinda-sorta good at a few things, but nothing he's invested in/practices often. However, he's pretty good at writing songs when he can focus on it (the Fragments all help, and they have a variety of musical genres they are into)
Tex is also OK with certain instruments, but not especially passionate to play anything often (she can sing though, but is the opposite of Carolina, who tends to lean toward more energetic songs. Tex will sing lower and slower)
Wash learned how to play the recorder in middle school. He can also play a kazoo, and can shake a tambourine on the beat. That's about it... with some help, he's OK on drums (he likes to back-up sing/harmonize with other people rather than sing solo)
Caboose is good on drums, he can put all his energy into making a strong rhythm! He's also good on various horns/brass and woodwinds, and really vibes with free-form jazz
Donut gets more caught-up with performing, he loves two come up with songs, sing and dance. He mostly likes pop-rock, but gets into other genres occasionally (he knows how to play the melodica very well). His big dream is to write a bunch of musicals~
Tucker is very good at different kinds of guitar, and he's a great singer as well (he didn't think he'd be into it, but just for practice, he tries out some classical/opera, and he's actually VERY impressive, he can project his voice very well and change the tone/pitch easily, and so he plays around merging old-school stuff with newer themes of music)
Locus hasn't had time for music in years... but he learned how to play different things as a kid; quena, siku, and some percussion instruments
Lopez can play basically anything he wants. People outside the loop will think it is just because he's a robot, and is therefore "copying" music that is already recorded... but Lopez will combine two completely different instruments and use them together in ways most people couldn't think of (he also leans toward very sappy loves songs, inspired by his adoration for Sheila~)
I don't have too many thoughts for the Freelancers... but if they could have had a different life path, York would probably have done well in a boy band, and South would have been a punk-rock star~

🎻 VIOLIN — does your oc play any instruments? what is their skill level (beginner/intermediate/advanced/virtuoso/etc)?
Honestly I hadn't put too much thought into instruments for Kittie before until now... I can't see her playing any string instruments (except for maybe the fiddle? But I feel that fits Merry a bit more)
I see her as more of a brass player, and a person who prefers the sound of a trumpet or trombone. I could see her playing a bugle or some type of wartime horns. She'd go crazy for instruments made of monster bones, and I could see her wanting to make her own since she's a monster hunter. She might like the "serpent" instrument, which is similar to a cornett and was eventually superseded by the ophicleide and then the valved tuba.
Also tbh could see her as loving the drums.

red desert arrangement brainstorm i guess
Heal and replace. Heal and replace. It doesn’t take too long to heal and replace; the demons we’re running from, they’re begging to stay. How do you capture that musically, when I’ve already got the parts all going on, the four-part harmony, the chords and the percussionbass rhythm going on underneath? What do I do when it sounds almost exactly like the first verse? The demons we’re running from, they’re begging to stay. I think I see the problem.
Pop music is notoriously repetitive; orchestral music is not. When you don’t have lyrics that change between lines and verses, when you have 40 or 50 people playing instruments who don’t want to play the exact same thing, on a 4-bar repeat that changes up a couple times depending on the section of the song, you’ve gotta get creative. And can I just say, of all the songs I’ve played covers for or even attempted, I chose this album because from a musical standpoint it’s not boring. It’s no cookie cutter I V vi IV or whatever chord combination with a simple drum beat and repeated melodies. The bridges, at least, of each song, are something else. They were clearly written to be fun to play, rather than easy. I wouldn’t recommend them to a beginner busker. Few people I know will cover 5 seconds of summer, for good reason too. It’s difficult. The chords are unpredictable, for example red desert, focusing on vocal harmonies and using simple melodies to bring them out, has a sneaky E major chord in a B minor piece, G sharps littered around the place that aren’t in the key signature, aren’t always there. It means you’ve gotta look twice before improvising, figure out what bar you’re in, what notes to play. E is the subdominant in a B minor piece, in making it major instead of minor, it’s harder to tell that the piece is in a minor key. It shakes things up a bit. It should make it easier to fill in with something interesting, a countermelody over the verse: should I give it to the flutes maybe, or should I switch some of the parts that people played in the first verse around? I can figure that out later.
In the meantime, note that the other commonly occurring chords in the song are B minor and A minor. This is clever: B melodic minor scale ascending adds a G sharp; and A minor has a G sharp in both its harmonic and ascending melodic versions. As a result, the song works smoothly and feels calming and resolved.
So imagine the creatures in the desert. You’ve got the hot wind blowing red sand over cacti and scraggly brown shrubs, the occasional bunch of desert trees, eucalyptus or acacia or mulga I’m not sure, I haven’t brushed up on my ecology quite that much. For the purpose of this exercise, it doesn’t matter. Imagine a bird flitting above the desert. A little spiky lizard or maybe a spinifex mouse flitting around. Can I write all of their parts, weaving in and out of the melody, so each instrument doesn’t get bored? Can I write the migratory birds that fly overhead in search of water, seeing the same landscape every year, never landing on it? how about the red kangaroo, and the western grey? Is there a brown snake sneaking around the bushes: ominous, how about a minor chord for it. I’ll fit it in the transition from A minor to E major, because the harmonic tone-and-a-half jump between F natural and G sharp, both accidentals in this piece (meaning F is meant to be a sharp and G a natural) gives just the sound I’m after. No one wants to be bitten by a brown snake when you’re miles away from the nearest road, let alone hospital. But the red desert is here to heal our blues. We’re safe. Snakes are scarier than they sound: they don’t actually want to bite you. Their venom is meant for the little prey they can actually swallow—they can’t eat a human. They’re not likely to bite unless they think you’re going to hurt them first.
In the recording, the bugle sounds I gave to the bassoons and brass in the first verse could be these animals peeking out. I can see a scorpion when I listen to it. They’re great for looking at from a middle distance, gorgeous, angry, spiky things. But the spiky grasses and desert leaves you can pluck and take apart for your liking. They’re not overgrazed: ecologically there is no problem with that. Some of them you can even eat, bush tucker, you should try it sometime. Connect with the land. Red, red desert, heal our blues.
These plants are the ‘ooh’s in the second verse in the recording. Lovely and ominous. Yet despite being first in the album, red desert is the last of eleven songs in my arrangement. It’s an album theme: every song has ‘ooh’s in the second verse. Well, at least three of them. I think they can be edited a little to wrap around our desert creatures. And our muse! Who is our muse? I’ll dive deeper for you. Who did we call to leave all their fears at the end of the world with us? Let’s make the little melodies dance around them, using the notes that we discussed. You’re the only one I do this for.
So now I have it. Ideas. Concepts, theories, imaginings, that I can build out of notes that somehow go with what I’ve already done. Do the same with the chorus. I don’t know when I’ll get to it all. But here is the framework. I hope we all learned something today. Had ideas. I know I did. I know this orchestral part is going to be better for it. One day. When I make the ideas a reality.

William Edward Chiaiese was born on October 20, 1934 to John and Emily Chiaiese(key-ah-tze) in Dorchester , Massachusetts . The family later moved to Squantum , Mass. John changed the family name to Chase, understanding that the Italian name Chiaiese was both hard to spell and pronounce.
While Bill was growing up his parents felt that he needed to broaden his horizons and arranged for him to take violin lessons. Bill did not even touch the trumpet, until the middle of his high school years. A newspaper clipping dated 1956 pictures Bill listed as a Corporal in the 26th Yankee Infantry Division Band holding a bass drum. Bill's experience as a drummer changed his life and the lives of many others. During a St. Patrick's Day parade he had to lug his huge drum for five miles enduring the miserably cold pouring rain. It hurt so bad that he decided never to do it again, he asked his father to dig out his old trumpet for him.
Not long after switching to trumpet, Bill was playing first chair in the school orchestra and classical music was his main love. Early 1950's a neighbor coaxed Bill to attend a Stan Kenton concert with him. This was the band with Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Childers, Conte Condoli, etc. After that night, Bill was hooked on jazz and high note trumpet.
As you can tell, this time period in Bills life is hard to decipher. Bill was doing so much playing, and he became very good so quickly, that the dates are very confusing. Since Maynard left the Kenton Band and headed to Hollywood in 1953, Bill must have seen Kenton before then. I can only assume that he switched to the trumpet around 1951 at about the age of 16.
Boston Globe writer Ernie Santosuosso wrote about Bill in 1971, “Bill Chase has been experimenting with sounds all of his life. As a youngster in the Fields Corner community of Dorchester , he was intrigued by the drums. Since he didn’t own a set, he’d improvise with the aid of a couple of galvanized steel rubbish barrels.
Bill’s backyard became his bandstand as he beat out precocious rhythms atop the inverted barrels. The little Italian lady, who sat at her kitchen window, regarded Bill as a pet but voiced emphatic objections to his make-shift paraddidling on the barrels. So, when Bill’s father, who played trumpet, decided to retire his horn, the boy’s curiosity inevitably led him to the instrument and away from the barrel- house. The maturation process as a trumpeter had begun for Bill.
The ex-drummer put his horn to work for St. Ambrose’s Band, then for Boston English High, Berklee, Stan Kenton, Maynard Ferguson, and Woody Herman. The little old Italian lady was given special command performances in her kitchen and she almost lit a candle in thanksgiving for young Bill’s return to his barrels and rubbish deposits.”
He started playing his fathers old trumpet the summer before his junior year in high school and showed a natural aptitude for it. He soon joined a Drum and Bugle Corps, along with his school groups. This, was prior to his stint in the Boston National Guard where he said he wrote music and played trumpet in 1957. He served for six months in the guard band, which honed his talents as a trumpeter and arranger.
Chase played lead trumpet with Maynard Ferguson in 1958, Stan Kenton in 1959, and Woody Herman's Thundering Herd during the 1960s.
One of Chase's charts from this period, "Camel Walk", was published in the 1963 Downbeat magazine yearbook. From 1966 to 1970 he freelanced in Las Vegas, working with Vic Damone and Tommy Vig. In 1967 he led a six-piece band at the Dunes and Riviera Hotel where he was featured in the Frederick Apcar lounge production of Vive Les Girls, for which Chase arranged the music.
In 1971 he started a jazz rock band named "Chase" that mixed pop, rock, blues, and four trumpets.[5] The debut album Chase was released in April 1971. Chase was joined by Ted Piercefield, Alan Ware, and Jerry Van Blair, three jazz trumpeters who were adept at vocals and arranging. They were backed up by a rhythm section consisting of Phil Porter on keyboards, Angel South on guitar, Dennis Johnson on bass, and John "Jay Burrid" Mitthaur on percussion. Rounding out the group was Terry Richards, who was the lead vocalist on the first album. The album contains Chase's most popular song, "Get It On", released as a single that spent 13 weeks on the charts beginning in May 1971. The song features what Jim Szantor of Downbeat magazine called "the hallmark of the Chase brass—complex cascading lines; a literal waterfall of trumpet timbre and technique." The band received a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, but was edged out by rising star Carly Simon.
Chase released their second album, Ennea, in March 1972; the album's title is the Greek word for nine, a reference to the nine band members. The original lineup changed midway through the recording sessions, with Gary Smith taking over on drums and G. G. Shinn replacing Terry Richards on lead vocals. The third album, Pure Music, moved the band toward jazz. Two of the songs were written or co-written by Jim Peterik of the Ides of March, who also sings on the album, along with singer and bassist Dartanyan Brown.
Chase's work on a fourth studio album in mid-1974 came to an end on August 9, 1974. While en route to a scheduled performance at the Jackson County Fair, Chase died in the crash of a chartered twin-engine Piper Twin Comanche in Jackson, Minnesota, at the age of 39. The pilot and co-pilot were killed, as were keyboardist Wally Yohn, guitarist John Emma, and drummer Walter Clark.
