On the 31st of January, thirteen years ago, SoulCalibur V was released in North America for the XBOX 360 and PS3.
Tumblr media
Set 17 years after SoulCalibur IV, SoulCalibur V follows Patroklos and Pyrrha, the children of Sophitia, as they become entangled in the conflict between the cursed sword Soul Edge and the holy blade Soul Calibur. The game introduces new characters, a refined combat system with a faster pace, and the Critical Edge mechanic. While praised for its fluid gameplay and visuals, it received criticism for its lack of single-player content and the removal of fan-favorite characters.

POV: You've been framed for murdering your fiancé and some goth girl just showed up to give you your mom's sword
This is my submission for the Soulcalibur community's monthly art prompt, "Weapon of Choice." My original plan was to make a series of drawings with Rothion, Sophitia, Tira and Pyrrha all looking at their reflections in the Omega Sword, but life got in the way, so I had to pare it back. There are definitely some flaws, but overall, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out.

Voldo through the ages. The one constant of the Soul series. The undisputed S&M king. The true sex symbol of gaming.

Hi, @the-autistic-gemini! Happy holidays! I was your Secret Santa -- thank you for requesting Pyrrha/Tira art. This is one of my favorite ships, but somehow I've never done art of them. I came up with the first piece with Pyrrha Omega and Tira, but then I didn't feel it was particularly shippy, so I did a bonus art with just normal Pyrrha and Tira. Hope you like!

Soulcalibur V is a 3D historical-fantasy weapon-based fighting game developed by Project Soul and published by Namco Bandai for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on January 31, 2012.  The sixth main entry in the Soul series, Soulcalibur V takes place seventeen years after the events of Soulcalibur IV and features the children of prominent series heroine Sophitia Alexandra as the main protagonists (Patroklos and Pyrrha). Along with descendants and students of some of the retired fighters from the series (such as Taki's protege Natsu and Xianghua's daughter Leixia), the game introduces new fighters (including fortune teller Viola and mysterious werewolf Z.W.E.I.).  Like most of the previous games in the series, Soulcalibur V includes a non-canonical guest fighter. For this entry, the guest is Ezio Auditore da Firenze from the Assassin's Creed series. Players can also unlock the moveset of Devil Jin from the Tekken series for use in the character creation system.

Sliiiiight nitpick, but I feel like Namco always has Mari Shimazaki make her most basic designs when it comes to Tekken 😅
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She's made Bayonetta, of course, and she's even made some killer designs for Leixia's 1P and also Ivy's and Tira's SoulCalibur V 2P designs but her work for Tekken?
Josie is literally just the Filipino flag and an ugly haircut.
Tumblr media
Kazumi is just a woman in a kimono, worn in the way dead people wear it in funerals and an old-time-y haircut, but don't forget the bows! Because no woman in Tekken should look older than 16!
Tumblr media
And now Reina, she is admittedly her best Tekken design so far, I like the hoody, but the hair is kind of a mess and it's otherwise just too... Plain.
Tumblr media
Like, I don't know, I guess she doesn't have to go all out all the time but I was genuinely, unpleasantly surprised when I heard she was responsible for Josie's look and while it's nowhere near as basic with Reina, it's too pre-Tekken 4 plain for me.

Themmm!! 😍 This is lovely, thank you so much for drawing it, and high five to us drawing these two for the first time. I love the colors, and you've done a great job with all the details on their elaborate costumes! I love their poses and how worried Pyrrha looks. Thank you, I love it! <3
HAPPY HOLIDAYS, @chacusha !!!!!! Thank you so much for the lovely drawings!!! I also decided to make you some tirpyr and funnily enough, this is also my first time drawing them together. I haven't drawn anything soulcalibur since middle school because I'm very much a perfectionist, and it's my favorite thing in the world. I had so much fun finally drawing tirpyr. And I hope you like them too!

I just want to share a realization I had while going through the Legend of Soulcalibur artbook. This occurred to me while going through the pages on Xianghua’s backstory.
Below is an excerpt from page 29. Roughly, it translates to “Xianghua’s connection with the three treasures, including the sword Krita-Yuga*, traces back to the maidenhood of her mother Xiangfei.”
Tumblr media
Near the lower left corner is the furigana (small katakana) indicating the pronunciation of her mother’s name. The character used for her family name Chai is 柴; it turns out in Japanese, it’s pronounced “shiba”.
And I’ve only seen Xiba’s name in katakana: シバ.
That kid’s name was a pun all along!
(Footnote under the cut.)
*I used the localized name here because it would be unrecognizable otherwise. The sword’s name in Japanese is Gouhouken (護法剣), which can be literally translated as something like “demon-dispelling sword” or “sword in defense of Buddhist doctrine”. The other two treasures, Dvapara-Yuga mirror and Kali-Yuga rod, are called the Mappoukyou (末法鏡) and the Meppoukon (滅法棍) respectively. While the English localization opted for names from the Hindu cycle of ages, in Japanese only the mirror is named after one of the three Buddhist ages: the Latter Day of the Dharma (Mappou). I’m just gonna end this tangent here. I’m just a geek with a rudimentary understanding (at best) of either religion.
