On the 29th of July, sixteen years ago, "SoulCalibur IV" was released in North America for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

"SoulCalibur IV" features a diverse roster of characters, including special guest characters from the Star Wars universe, such as Darth Vader and Yoda. Known for its weapon-based combat system, "SoulCalibur IV" introduces new gameplay mechanics and improved graphics, offering both single-player and multiplayer modes. The game also includes a character creation mode, allowing players to customize their own fighters.

I think SoulCalibur IV's website had extended intros for all the characters, though the one that gets the most are these parts that aren't in the opening text crawl for Hilde's story mode. However, these were translated into English for the SC4 Signature Series Fighter's Guide. (Admittedly, I yoinked the following quotes from the fanwiki, but at least there's a source cited.) The emphasis is mine.

Several days earlier, Hilde and her soldiers had come to the assistance of a troop of mercenaries traveling through Wolfkrone. They had been attacked by the inhabitants of the ruined castle and many of their numbers were slain. Among the survivors was a woman who had information that was of great interest to Hilde. According to her, a man called Siegfried had entered the cursed city alone to face the army of the Azure Knight. The woman told Hilde in a quiet voice that she had tried to help him but he had refused her. She just was not strong enough, but Hilde was powerful. Perhaps she could help him instead? Hilde immediately sent out patrols to find the man. She could not let one who fought for the same cause die in vain. It was not long before Hilde found Siegfried and contrived to meet him on the outskirts of Ostrheinsburg. However, the knight clad in the cold, crystal armor would have nothing to do with her. "This is my battle," he said, "and I don't want anyone getting in my way. I don't need any help." And with those few words, he left. Strangely, Hilde did not feel angry at his response. There was something about him...

The game has a truncated version of this, notably without the unnamed mercenary woman informing Hilde of Siegfried's plight. Also, Hilde's encounter with Siegfried simply ends with him going to Ostrheinsburg alone, without dialogue.

Either way, I believe the mercenaries are Schwarzwind. The idea of Siegfried's old gang reforming was around as far back as Soulcalibur. For a time, I was under the impression that in the old timeline, this came into fruition during the interim of SC4 and SC5, but call it an oversight. So, in the new timeline, I don't think Salia reforming Schwarzwind as a mercenary troop in Siegfried's absence is too far off (see also, the Schwarzwind missions in SC6's Libra of Soul).

And by virtue of Salia being the one holding the group together, that has to be her. I think she's also the woman in Siegfried's dream from the opening of his story mode. ("So, you would forsake our friendship?")

Here's where this unnamed woman appears again in Hilde's extended profile. Again, emphasis mine.

There was no need for grand speeches. All in Wolfkrone had long known this moment would come. Not a man or woman was ignorant of what this day meant. This day marked the beginning of a sequence of events that would decide their fate. "Give this to him." Hilde nodded her head in silent acknowledgement and carefully took the necklace. This woman, too, had come to place her hope in Hilde's hands. She could not ignore her plea.

I do wonder what that necklace might've looked like. Let me check the Japanese webpage... (Translation mine. The last two lines seem to Hilde's thoughts, so I'm taking the liberty of italicizing them.)

And then someone approached Hilde's horse. It was a woman named Salia, a survivor from the mercenary troop. Seemingly still recovering from her wounds, she came to Hilde's side with faltering gait and offered a short prayer of blessing and a small necklace. "This is for him..." Hilde silently nodded and accepted the gift. Here, too, is someone who wants to place their hope in me. I will not let this hope go to waste.

OH, GIVE ME A BREAK. This is the only part where Salia's name is mentioned and it was lost in translation for whatever reason.

Still, I like to think this encounter went a long way into Hilde allying with Schwarzwind years later.
