Soul Eater was one of my first animes I watched and owned in a boxset (never did finish the manga though 😅) and while I haven't watched it in ages it's still nostalgic to me~ I never really had a favourite character but I suppose I always related to Kidds OCD? Star is always the fuckin knuckle-head but a v skilled hand to hand. think he had a moment where he just fuckin hurls Baki n she just fuckin... team rocketed off somewhere? n had to come back like "well... im sorry.. i spun too fast" when in reality star just fuckin chucked her.. like... brute force n she couldnt NOT go??

even Kidd!! Liz n Patt had easier times dealin bc its all they knew but then this fuckin Kidd[pun intended] comes around n is like "but what if upside-down guns??" n just stuck w it cause hes too embarrassed to say somethin about it?? so he just kept it, it works better anyways? he strengthens those pinkies bc fuck you hes just built different.

Fire Force be like here's this whole original world with mechanics, economy, ranking, religion, etc. by the creator of Soul Eater that ends with the main character creating Death who goes on to set the world back to normal but the world will eventually evolve INTO the Soul Eater world...and then Death creates Death the Kidd millions of years later as a tribute to Fire Force's main character saving the world...by...creating Death...as...God...

I so totally agree with this. There's a huge weapon meister power dynamic to the point that it affects the character writing in the story. Most of the weapons (excluding most of the Death Scythes and Tsubaki kind of, but im going to cover her later) get very little development and screen time. I feel like it's especially prevalent in the second group of meisters and weapons. We know a lot about Ox. He is smart, he is in love with Kim, and he has his own little character arc about that. He gets to be a person. What do we know about Havar? He's stoic ig? He's a spear. That's like the extent of it. Now, Kim and Jackie, obviously, we learn a lot about them in NOT! but I'm talking about Soul Eater proper. Kim gets a lot. We know that she's sassy and confident but has a soft side. We know she's secretly a witch she has a character arc about that and helps Kidd make peace with witch kind. Jackie is there, I guess? We don't really see much of her personality in Soul Eater. Kilik is confident and cool he's a capable, strong guy who is there for his friends and is probably one of the more sane characters in the cast. Fire and thunder are probably the weapons in this group we know the most about. They are earth shamans with a strong connection to nature. They are very sensitive when nature is harmed, but these two characters are portrayed like toddlers they don't speak and act like much younger children than they are supposed to be. The two are lowkey infantalized. There's clearly a huge disparity.

On to the weapons of the main cast (excluding Soul bc he falls into death scythe category) These guys get a lot more to work with than the secondary group, which is expected they are main characters, but compared to their meisters it is nothing. They are only more important because their meisters are important. Tsubaki gets the most out of this group bc she does have an arc, but it is very short-lived. Her battle with her brother and her backstory are very well done. It seems promising for future storylines involving her. Those future storylines never happen. At least she gets something that doesn't revolve around Black☆Star. That's more than I can say about Liz and Patty. Their entire lives revolve around Kidd. I understand that he saved them from their lives in Brooklyn, but I wish in the main story they got to do something on their own. What little development they get while Kidd is gone has to do with their relationship with him (specifically Liz). I want them to have a story separated from him completely to get to know them better. They have personalities, but they are not very well-rounded characters. They are made to be accessories for Kidd.

The Death Scythes are the only weapons that get super substantial character development. It's almost like being a Death Scythe makes you a person. Death Scythes have a level of status above other weapons, and this shows in the story. Some are more utilized than others, but the death Scythes that are main characters (Spirit, Marie, and Soul) get a lot to work with.

Death Scythes are less replaceable than ordinary weapons and, therefore, more important.

I could go on and on about this but I think you get my point.

I can imagine that the world of soul eater has a large group of people who fall into the poor ideals that weapons are objects for their meisters and they are not equal to their meister.

And I could see Spirit falling into that as well. It’s not a belief you can just discard over night after years of being taught weapons should protect their meisters, you internalize this idea and belief and I can see weapons devaluing themselves as 50% of the team

Soul kind of brought up this idea for me originally. He has shown multiple times he is ready to die for Maka because that is his job as her weapon. He is there to support and protect, like he isn’t also a human being

It’s something that’s shown in the series that I’m surprised I haven’t seen in fan works? I have a shitty draft in my notes about Spirit feeling this way somewhat and I just think it’s a good idea that should be explored more.
