My Mother as St Brigid dreaming, oil on canvas, 1983

"I read a story about St Brigid in a book of women saints that I had. St Brigid had performed the miracle of giving a blind woman her sight for a split-second. The blind woman had seen fields with cattle grazing in them. The scene was so beautiful to her that she said the split second was all she needed, and that the memory of it would light up her life for evermore. In my painting, it is St Brigid herself that has the vision. St Brigid is the Irish saint of cattle and dairy. She seemed the fitting saint for my mother, who was a nurturing child of nature, in my eyes."

"My mother lies on her side, with her eyes closed. Her hand, with it's wedding ring, is on her chest. She is wearing an olive green jumper and a silky blue skirt. On her feet she is wearing red shoes, with a little upward tilt, reminiscent of Persian shoes. Behind her are the hills of the Yorkshire moors with peacefully grazing cattle; the highest peak is the central top of the canvas. I was thinking of Rembrandt's 'Polish Rider' "..." I thought it was such a solidly constructed composition: the way the head of the rider is placed in vertical relation to the pyramid of the mountain behind him. I had wanted to do something to echo it, using the same sheltering edifice of the mountain, like a tent, to protect my mother. My mother is dreaming up her own protective world. She is the spirit of nature."
