An Update to the Shendex
Hello all!
A little while ago, I made a post asking people to send me a list of main characters or love interests in danmei with the surname "Shen" in order to create a comprehensive list. That received a bit more traction than I thought it would, but not much in the way of new Shens. I am happy to announce, however, that I have googled the hell out of this and found an additional 20+ Official, Honorary, and Supporting Character Shens to add to the prospective Shendex. Here is the list (at present).
The Current Shendex
Seven Seas Danmei
Shen Shiliu/Gu Yun (Stars of Chaos)
Shen Qiao (Thousand Autumns)
Shen Qingqiu/Shen Yuan (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System)
Shen Wei (Guardian)
Shen Zechuan (Ballad of Sword and Wine)
Novel Updates
Shen Ci (Vase Cannon Fodder Is Pampered by the Group Again)
Shen Gurong (Transmigrated Into The High-Risk Profession Life As A Master)
Shen Jin (After Being Moved to Tears by the Sworn Enemy’s Pheromones)
Shen Jin (Agreement Mark)
Shen Jue (A Hundred Ways To Kill A Heartthrob)
Shen Junci (Insights of the Medical Examiner)
Shen JunXi (Transmigrated into the Pastoral Scenery)
Shen Ke (Dandy Escapes From Marriage)
Shen Kong (The Professional Three Views Rectifier [Book Transmigration])
Shen Li (After the Accident, My Boyfriend Got Straight)
Shen Lin (Welcome to the Game Room of Supremacy Luck)
Shen Mofeng (No Money)
Shen Qi (Applaud for Happiness)
Shen Qianling (Everywhere in Jianghu is Wonderful/The Jianghu is Full of Local Tyrants)
Shen Qingcheng (Please Stop Pretending To Be a Cute Newcomer!)
Shen Ruo (Turned out I am a Scheming Little Cannon Fodder)
Shen Tanqi (The Male Lead Ran Away With My Ball)
Shen Tingzhou (I’m a Family Doctor in a Domineering Boss Novel)
Shen Ye (Accidentally Marked The Archenemy)
Shen Yu (Silent Concubine)
Shen Yunxing (Pregnant With The Pup Of A Wealthy Old Man)
Shen Zhixian (It's Not Easy Being a Master)
Honorary Shens
Fu Shen (Golden Terrace)
Lu Tian Shen (Dramatic Fake Young Master Holds the Group’s Favorite Script)
Luoshen (Let Me Go, I’m Not Pregnant)
Tang Shen (The Kingdom That Never Sleeps)
Xu Shen (Transmigrating to 1983)
Supporting Character Shens
Shen Jiu (The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System)
Shen Xingtang (Genius Mechanic)
Shen Yi (Stars of Chaos)
Shen Yuanting (Transmigrated as a Cannon Fodder Who Married into a Wealthy Family)
Now Onto Business...
Now that I have enough Shens to justify the existence of the Shendex, the question becomes how to format it. I'm not the best with this sort of thing, so anyone who wants to help is completely welcome (just DM me). As for how it should look... let's put it to a vote.
My aim is for every entry to include the characters used for each entry's name, a picture if possible, and a quick description of their story as well as a link to it. This could take a while, so I think I'll update it in bits and pieces. As always, you are welcome to send in a Shen if you please---just make sure to stick to danmei because otherwise this thing is going to get looooooong.
See you all next update!

I think a big reason why I like danmei so much is that even though the romance of course is the oft talked about highlight, I love that it takes its time to develop its main characters to the point I am completely content to just have entire books just following *their* journeys. Even without the romance. Like, I can and will read entire books length chunks of Xie Lian's entire 800+ years history. I thoroughly enjoy Wei Wuxian just doing his weird estranged uncle shtick for chapters on end. Or even just reading about all of Shen Qiao's unfortunate travels. So even if you're not into the romance at first or its an incredibly long slow burn, there is still SO MUCH to chew on. I think it's totally possible for someone out there that isn't entirely on board for the romance to continue reading just to see the main character's arc come to some sort of satisfying end. I would say Danmei fandoms are one of the rare instances where its quite common to say the main character is your favorite character! and I think that's so fun and cool and aahhhhh i love fiction that have multiple elements to sink your teeth into!!

Me before rereading: what do you mean, Shen Qiao Yan Wushi and their five kids.... idk man do they really have that kind of relationship...?
Me during rereading: ooooh. oh, yes. Shiwu and Yuwen Song are Shen Qiao's sonboys, and somehow Yan Wushi *is* the stepdad....
Me getting to where they call Bian Yanmei "Da-lang" and Yu Shengyan "Er-lang": oooh shit. oh shit oh shit they ARE his (yws's) kids... what the fuck they ARE, what !!!

i got a lil bored so i decided to record some of my drawing process. By some I mean this whole rework. But even the sped up version is way too long and too big to upload here so you only get the final lineart.
Let me know if you maybe want to see that full thing or interested in future speedpaints I've always been interested in actually editing them but I am not remotely good at it. Let me know! :>

Continued from  ♫ + 92 ( jinx & shen qiao ) @masqce - oh sorry ya by sunmi
"Don't even know if it's day or night." jinx told ; finally taking off the safety googles.. hands practically numb from how long she'd been gripping her machinery.. but once done, it was worth all the aches and pains, "-I don't think I slept a blink since - two nights ago." she told with a contagious chuckle, blue hair still tightly braided with a few loose ends. "-and I know what you're gonna say- it's time for bed- and to that I say I need a good bed time story." she teased, "so get to reading." a Cheshire smile.

I finally got the first book in a series I've been wanting to read for a bit
But 8 chapters in, and I'm already sick of the main character.
Really unfortunate.

i love when shen qiao is mean. i love when someone is like “surely daoist master shen has no reason not to help me out with my schemes here” and shen qiao is like “surely this esteemed friend has no reason not to improve his martial arts, and yet somehow this humble daoist has flattened your sorry ass every time we meet. weird. ☺️”

Anyone ever think of the comparison between yanshen and hualian, coz idk why but I've always thought that if HC never met xl and still became a supreme ghost king and then met xl he'd be exactly like yan wushi coz (I believe) part of the reason why hc had to meet xl when he was younger was that children are much more open to being helped without ulterior motives.
Part of the reason why hc doesn't have many people close to him (again it's simply my belief) coz he grew up only having xl as a source of kindness and was very cynical towards everyone else around him so much so that just at the age of 10 he decided to commit suicide and even at a place where people held the belief that if he disturbed the ceremony then the whole kingdom would collapse.
That sort of resentment is soo hard for a 10 year old boy. If hc wasn't rescued by xl on time and then met him 800 years then he'd also be like yan wushi testing xl again and again to see if he's actually genuine. There is a reason that most fanfiction authors have xl and hc meet when they were much younger, a grown person is so much harder to help since they are so adverse to it suspecting it to be with ulterior motive.
As much as people like to think that if hc met xl in canon timeline and would just be poof in love that won't happen, in fact hc would just bother xl all the time (like yan wushi did with Shen Qiao) and push him to his limits. Likewise sq and xl are also very similar, say xl hadn't met hc as Wu Ming and took the curses wouldn't he also end up like sq? With all the I deserve punishment and the punishment he'll take for who knows how long (given wm dispersed and xl can't as he's a god.)
( I'll shut up now sorry I just write too much sorry)

Yan Wushi: Ugh, there’s always that weak bitch in the group who isn’t down with murder.
Yan Wushi: *glares at Shen Qiao*
Shen Qiao: Well, sorry I have morals!

Tell me about Thousand Autumns and why I should read it. (I think that’s the thing you reblog a lot of with the guy with the white stripe in his hair?)
Aside from the fact that Yan Wushi, the love interest of the novel and Danmei’s cuntiest dilf, is my deadbeat father and legal guardian, and thus should inspire you to read it for his role in my life?
Basically: Read Thousand Autumns? Please? For me? 🥺
Actual answer under the cut since this is getting longer than I expected (I’m too tired to actually try and be concise about it, so sorry.)
It features: lying and deceit, sect politics, jianghu fuckery, a temporarily blind and depowered MC, political intrigue, awesome fight scenes, a wonderful cast of supporting characters, interesting takes on the cultivation system, social commentary, an incredible dynamic between the main couple that isn’t front-and-centre, dramatic not-confessions, and the sweetest little sex monster of a woman you’ll ever meet. (She’s my favourtie character. She’s like if Sha Hualing was in love with Shen Qingqiu. Do you see?)
It’s a much more mature relationship than what we see with SVSSS, by virtue of happening between two people whose identites are, in spite of their circumstances, on sturdier foundations.
Now, then, the circumstances:
Shen Qiao, who must start from the ground up in every possible way, while he’s suffering from amnesia—something which Yan Wushi takes full advantage of, the bastard—is the true embodiment of an enlightened daoist. He’s a former sect leader and an honest, hard-working, good person; he is also not a pushover, and the moments he decides to bother standing up for himself are more satisfying than if he retaliated with fury and vengeance. He is relentless in how fairly he treats the world in spite of its rejection of him.
Yan Wushi: villain-love interest, leader of a demonic sect, and a jaded man convinced of the world’s cruelty. He believes it an ugly, vicious place that will snuff out all light by force. He attempts to break down Shen Qiao’s righteousness and honesty by being very gay Disney villain about it, and tries to get him to join him and see the world theough his eyes. He’s cunty, and an asshole, and makes horrible decisions to prove his own convictions, and he pushes, and takes, and betrays, and does everything but lay down his arms and accept defeat, even in the face of certain death.
They have a convoluted, twisted road ahead of them from the very beginning of the story. And yet, they gravitate towards each other even when they renege each other, falling back into each other’s orbit not with ease, but ruled by a profound understanding of their differences. How they navigate them, how they make space for each other, how they interact— Wonderful. Beautiful. Excruciating. I adore them.
Whether by design or coincidence, their lives tangle so much that they become inextricably linked, and the longer the story goes, you begin to see the cracks in both of their resolves to try and change the other. Their dynamic is gripping.
It is, however, not the main plot of the novel. Arguably, their relationship features as an accessory to the plot, rather than its focus. It plays a big part in how the plot unfolds and it does affect both Shen Qiao’s and Yan Wushi’s relationship and interactions with the world, but it’s—
I kind of felt, you know, like it was being preserved away from the world in a way. Like it was kept for them. Don’t know exactly why, or how I could give arguments to support this idea without spoiling some stuff, but. They have married bickering couple energy. You know?
There’s some CW’s, for sure. If you need a list I can definitely lay them out, so shoot me another ask in that case. Otherwise, I hope my deeply sleep deprived attempt at listing off why Thousand Autumns is worth reading works. If not, I got to call Yan Wushi a gay Disney villain, so I got my needs met for today!
Also: Do I reblog Thousand Autumns that much? I know it’s more than Erha, but. Hm. Maybe I should make it a bit more clear exactly how I feel about Mo Ran. Wouldn’t want the hierarchy to be destabilised.
