*door slams open* Mr. Guthrie isn't here. He's taken sanctuary on Mr. Underhill's estate. Do you know what you've done? What madness possessed you to write that letter? I tried to tell you—Billy found it. If he'd have shown anyone before I discovered him, but for dumb luck, I'd be dead. I'm sorry. You know I would never intentionally put you in any kind of danger. What was your intent? What was it? To destroy everything we've tried to build here for the past ten years? Or was it just to embarrass me? To show you a way out of all of this. To free you. A way out? Have you no memory of how we got in? Of what they took from us? What does it matter now? What does it matter? What does it matter what happened then if we have no life now? Because there is no life here. There is no joy here. There is no love here. There is—WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?—NO LOVE HERE! What do you think I'm out there fighting for if not to make those things possible here? You'll fight a war so we can make a life? You don't get one without the other, my sweet. No. You're wrong. I sent that letter to show you that you're wrong. There is a life in Boston. There is joy there. And music. And peace. The door is open. I've opened it for you. And it requires no war and no blood and no sacrifice. It requires an intolerable sacrifice. To accept a pardon? To apologize. Apologize? Who will you be apologizing to? TO ENGLAND! They took everything from us. And then they call me a monster. The moment I sign that pardon, the moment I ask for one, I proclaim to the world that they were right. This ends when I grant them my forgiveness, not the other way around. This path you're on, it doesn't lead where you think it does. If he were here, he'd agree with me! *door slams closed*

hate to do something so baity on tumblr but this horrid listicle is genuinely what my heart yearns to emit... seven episodes in, my kinsey read of black sails characters, vaguely arranged from gay to straight:
jack rackham and anne bonny: kinsey sixes who hang out with each other (and have sex) out of sheer psychic self defense
flint: mostly gay. I can't justify this.
max: three point five?...
john silver: no read on him, bi if I had to guess, but mostly what he is is harangued. so far he has moved like lightning through the path of least resistance in all matters. he shall do so sexually as well
charles vane: a two? he is a man of great and unwise passions and you sense that if you shot eleanor with a sex change ray, he would give a little grunt and proceed with his normal course, towards disaster
eleanor guthrie: a one at best. I'm sorry but the tv shoved queer representation with big betrayal (TM) at my face and I was like no thank you put it back to the kitchen and tell the chef I did not like. (my greatest hopes for eleanor is that she's having like a green prince arc where she rightfully sucks at everything because she's young and regularly loses her head due to pussy fever, but will grow into a seasoned leader. which she cannot do if she starts her arc as too many fictional women do with girlboss disease where she does not have enough weaknesses to conquer. however I must admit I cannot have quite that faith in the show.)
mr scott (idk his first name): one
richard guthrie: does it matter? he will fumble it.
miranda: ace.

"Look, 2016 was the Hamilton year, and Bright Star was probably not a strong contender even without it, but I remember being vividly enamored by the pretty woman who did the Tony performance. Lo and behold, Carmen Cusack."

Genuinely heartbreaking to open this month's "Neo" and discover that it is the last ever issue. I'll miss Jonathan Clements' columns on the state of the industry, and his delightfully droll deep dives into the magazines in Japan; I'll miss Andrew Osmond's consistent previews and reviews; cherish David West's enlightening interviews (some of the only ones around with his subjects) and in depth reviews of the movies; the consistency of Alex West; and forever cherish the delightful stories of Emily Lovell and Mark Guthrie as "boots on the ground" - and all of it held together with the infectious drive of Gemma Cox. And that's just the current legendary crop. It brought me many, many wonderful discoveries, recommendations and nuanced pieces of news, for somebody who still enjoys a haptic, tactile copy to treasure and refer to, tangible and real. I felt in wonderful company with it.
I discovered not just series which I adore and cherish now ("Penguindrum", "Tiger and Bunny", all time great "Baccano" and "Durarara" to name just a few) growing ever excited for their release or (and now I really feel old) re-releases, but also some movies I now absolutely cannot get enough of, and these legends were even the only ones who told me about Guitar Wolf playing 4 dates in the UK, well over a decade ago, which remains one of the greatest and strangest gigs of my life, and a fond memory forever shared with dear friends. I still disagree with them on "Code Geass" though, it sucks. I'm sorry, I just attack "Code Geass" unprompted, it's reflexsive. They'd talk about the series from the past I love, in deep dives, and help me plumb the depths to find things I discovered anew, like "El Hazard" and "Gunbuster". In the digital age, where "traditional journalism" is seen as a dying breed, and everything must be constant, online and freeform - we shall see. It is time for "the future" to put up or shut up. Mr Clements summed it up best: "Goodbye, everybody. All these worlds are yours."

[image description: 8 gifs of various scenes from season 4 of Black Sails, highlighting the similarities between Max and Silver.
1-2: Max says to Anne (offscreen), "I loved you. And I betrayed you. But I cannot apologize for it." / Silver says to Madi, "I had to stop it." Madi says, "You had to stop it?" Silver says, "And I'm not sorry for it."
3-4: Flint asks about Silver's past and Silver says, "It isn't important." / Marion Guthrie asks about Max's past and Max says, "What difference does it make?"
5-6: Max says, "I am tired of this. This thing that perpetuates itself with anger, and bluster, and blood." / Silver says, "That isn't a war. That is a fucking nightmare."
7-8: Silver, while captured by Hands, says, "I am a new beginning for Nassau." / at the end of the series, Mrs. Mapleton whispers in Max's ear. Max looks out over the railing in the tavern, a triumphant smirk on her face.

How would I describe my pettiness levels? I know, it’s about the amount of petty that takes to get irritated over the dozens of characters in novels and television series set in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries who have blatantly Scottish names, but who are invariably cast as English
I mean it was a period where it became fashionable to train oneself not to speak with a Scottish accent, and also it was a period where higher class Scots were mingling with the London elites so much that they were barely Scottish at all, so I’m not expecting that one dude with a slightly Scottish surname to speak like he’s just come off a Peterhead trawler. But when it’s a work with SEVERAL of these surnames I do have to get a bit suspicious
#One of my issues is the army officers in Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell because the author plainly wrote the army as having many nations#It's one of the things I like about that book is that although it focuses on English Magic it clearly has a fully sense of Britain too#So the army is frequently mentioned as having Welsh infantry but a bunch of the officers are called Murray Stewart Dalziel etc#God's sake one of them is actually called COLQUHOUN-GRANT fort crying out loud you don't get much more Scottish than that#Some of them are historical figures- I don't know how Colonel Murray would have spoken but he went to Edinburgh high school not Eton#But the others- you don't even have to give them an accent to indicate their Scottishness#And one of my favourite footnotes in the book is about how Wellington was Irish but the characters say he embodies Englishness#Susanna Clarke has a very keen sense of the fascinating complexities of Britishness and Englishness and I feel the tv series didn't get that#Although I did love it and I realise why there wasn't exactly room for it; but still it's one of the more fascinating details of her book#Then there's Black Sails which I also love with all my heart#This takes place at any even earlier time period so less English educations and the Scots just beginning to dominate the West Indies#And there's people called Guthrie and Fraser and Hamilton- and none of them have any Scottish connection whatsoever??#Hamilton I can understand since they're nobility (although the Act of Union only took place ten years before and teh Hamiltons were big ther#And Scotland didn't produce as many Caribbean pirates as other parts of Britain- it's more of a south England/Welsh heritage#But the traders? Scotland was in the nastier parts of colonialism in the West Indies up to its neck in the eighteenth century#And as for dodgy slightly underground trading- you're telling me someone running that kind of operation with the name Guthrie#doesn't even have the SLIGHTEST Scottish connection? It's so weird to me sorry#(Flint's referring to his anger at England is totally realistic however as I say it's only just after the Union#and also again there's that whole interesting concept of Englishness/Britishness that's about to start happening)#There are many more examples I could cite in other works#And as I say I AM being petty I just think it's often on the things that's missing from otherwise very accurate period pieces#is a complex understanding of the way Britain- and by extension British colonialism- worked during the period#And of course people's inability to recognise Scottish names due to the fact that we've been emigrating in droves since Domesday#Ok silly rant over#Which seems appropriate for St George's day- which is rightly England's saint day but union jacks get plastered everywhere#and like it's fine if you want to celebrate both but that people don't even THINK about there being any difference is what confuses me
