hi, tysm for the ask! while im definitely not the guy to speak for all mspec lesbians, i can definitely try my best to help you :]

mspec lesbians are when a person identifies as a lesbian while simultaneously being attracted to other genders, hence the "multi spectrum" (mspec) part of the term. i myself am a bi lesbian, so im just going to use that as an example, but there are also pan lesbians, omni lesbians, it goes on. (there are also mspec gays, but people dont seem too pressed about them, and im not gay, so i wont speak on them.)

there are a lot of reasons someone could identify as a bi lesbian, like if theyre romantically a lesbian while being bi*sexual*, or a bi person with a preference towards women. personally, while i do think lesbianism inherently includes nonbinary people (speaking *as* a nonbinary lesbian), my attraction to nbs is separate enough to warrant the label for both mine and other nbs' comfort. (also i think some guys are attractive lol). but it does vary from person to person!

as for the history, bi people using lesbian as an umbrella term (much like, for example, a bi guy calling themself gay) since *at least* the 70s.

and as for resources, heres a really helpful carrd i found, as well as just going through the 'mspec lesbian' tag on tumblr has quite a few good posts about the historical usage of the label!

I have a question about the tags on "Sorry, It's Locked" and the fic content. Everything I've seen you post about it, it sounds interesting, but then there's the vaginal sex tag and the trans Tim tag which, taken together, have me hesitating, because PIV with trans men is a huge squick for me (trans, if it makes a difference, so, not just a cis person going "ew, that's weird"). Do those tags actually go together, and if so, is it something that can be skipped over without missing anything plot-important? (Like, if it was a movie, and the plot sounded good, I could just walk out of the room for the scene and come back when it's over, I wouldn't want to skip an entire movie that sounds otherwise cool for one uncomfortable scene.)

Yeah, those tags do go together, sorry. Definitely trans Tim bottoming for vaginal sex in the main fic, tho only in chapters 4 and 5, in chapter 3 there's no sex, and in chapters 1 and 2 it's Jaylex, which is two cis (for now, Jays gonna end up kinda transfemme eventually) men.

I would consider it pretty plot relevant though, unfortunately. I'd consider most of the sex in this fic series to be plot relevant, because the way I'm writing Jay is that he pretty much can't do any introspection or learn much about himself without it being under the guise of sex and kink, because otherwise it's too scary 💀 and you get to see a lot of how fucked in the head Jay is through him having sex with and being in a healthy (healthier) relationship with Tim. Him suddenly being unquestionably the more mentally fucked up one in a relationship definitely forces him to confront some of his more fucked up tendencies that rear their heads (especially they rear his head's during sex, given that a sexual relationship is pretty much the only long-term relationship hed had before his and Tim's)

this is probably shaped by my limited frame of reference, but im really fascinated by witnessing the real-time development of adhd as a diagnosis. people attribute so many symptoms to it now or maybe they always did? i was wondering if you have any thoughts on what is the use of adhd specifically as a category within psychiatry. I'm esl so sorry for any confusing wording

no you're right imo; diagnostic categories are always somewhat in flux ofc but ADHD is one that has seen a particularly pronounced shift in the last couple decades. obviously this is multifactorial but my observation goes something along these lines:

'hyperactivity' has been dx'd in children since about the 1950s (also when Ritalin hit the market) but the ADHD dx doesn't really take off until the 90s (also when Adderall, a 2nd-gen reformulation of the 'obesity' drug Obetrol, hit the market). so, it's not all that surprising that 20 years later you see increased patient awareness of the diagnosis, increased popular interest in it, and shifting / expanding ideas of what it means and what ADHD 'is'. it's a relatively young dx.

part of the reason it's young is because it's basically a 'biopsychiatric' dx, meaning it diagnoses certain behaviours as being a 'brain problem' rather than having social causes or context. in practice this is complicated because psychs do use pharmacological approaches in conjunction with psychodynamic ones all the time; nevertheless, the central promise of DSM ADHD and its pharmaceutical treatments has consistently been that the ADHD subject has a physiological, neurological disorder / dysfunction / aberration, and that the drug treatments on the market fix it. that none of this is actually empirically supported is conceptually inconvenient and entrenched by the research process.

the biopsychiatric narrative is worth paying attention to because the context here is one in which it has become commonly accepted that behavioural 'disorders' and affective distress of various kinds can be, basically, either of pure biological origin, or else Your Fault. in the case of childhood hyperactivity, Your Fault historically also included Your Mother's Fault; part of the reason many mothers embraced Ritalin in the 50s and 60s was because the proffered pharmaceutical narrative explicitly challenged the idea that these mothers had done something 'wrong' to result in their (mostly) sons exhibiting disruptive and hyperactive behaviour.

this dichotomy of biology vs personal failing is very overtly present in quite a bit of discourse around ADHD today. if it's my brain being 'wrong' or different, then it's not something I've done wrong but a disease with a simple chemical fix. in this context I don't think it's surprising at all that a lot of popular and patient conceptions of ADHD have seen a considerable widening over the past few decades. often people like to blame this on pharmaceutical companies, and it's true that industry benefits from these discourses and frequently invests in them (eg, via instruments like ADDitude mag). however, that's a pretty simplistic explanation on its own and doesn't really account for the ways in which patients and potential patients also find this diagnostic category personally useful, for reasons ranging from identity-formation to the desire to access prescription amphetamines. ADHD increasingly shows up as a biologised explanation for behaviours ranging from 'eating too many sweets' to 'postural sway' and so on. you can see in such examples how invoking the idea of an aberrant ADHD brain is both reassuring to people who have been made to feel ashamed of certain behaviours, and provides a sense of shared identity and community with others.

all of this is to say: I don't find it surprising at all when I see a relative broadening of notions of ADHD, almost always expressed in biological terms (the 'ADHD brain' operates differently, 'seeks dopamine', causes this or that). ADHD is in some ways a particularly blatant distillation of this general trend in popular psychiatric discourses, for reasons relating to expectations about childhood and child behaviour, and the historical and present relationship between the ADHD label and the regulation of amphetamines. but much of what's happening with ADHD in terms of popular discourses about it can also be seen with many, many other psychiatric diagnoses, to varying extents and in various ways.

my experience writing about ADHD on this website leads me to close by explicitly stating the following: I do not think any ADHD behaviours / symptoms are people's 'fault' or an individual failing; I do not think using drugs for any reason is morally bad or needs to be justified; the fact that I do not think ADHD is a 'brain disease' does not mean I think people are 'making it up' or exaggerating wrt any difficulties they experience personally, professionally, emotionally, &c.

i think MK would mostly feel a sense of loss for the fact that in a way, things should have been like this, like when he “hatched” Wukong probably would have found him if it wasn’t for the fact someone or something brought it to Pigsy shop. He would have grown up with someone who could tell him how to be a stone Monkey and teach him his power. Surely, I think Wukong wouldn’t have been as good as a parent as Pigsy, and MK doesn’t regret a bit how things actually ended up happening, but it’s a bit of a case of “sometimes I imagine how my life would have been if it went this way”

two things about this i want to talk about: 1) the darkness of the story is what MAKES it so impactful as a kids' movie, and 2) i feel like this post kind of makes it sound worse than it is. it's not even a scary movie.

the story is fundamentally about a 12-year-old girl's pain and frustration at feeling alone and ignored. like, this story does not exist without the protagonist's child-like mindset and worldview. next gen is a kid's movie because the whole story is about the very specific experience of being a kid and feeling so desperately alone and ignored by all the adults in your life. and the reason it's a "dark" kid's movie goes hand in hand with that! this movie does not try to sugar-coat how horrible life feels when you're a mentally ill 11 year old; it never glosses over how big and explosive and horrifying everything that happens at that age feels.

i also just... appreciate it for its darkness. it doesn't gloss over things like death or violence or anger, which a lot of kid's movies do - the most important thing about this movie to me is that it never once comes across as condescending or patronizing to its target audience. it never treats children watching it like they're too stupid or too innocent for the things this story is about.

also - it wasn't even like, discreetly horrifying. the "character gets vaporized on screen" is alarming, but it takes a second and there's no gore of any kind. the "walking corpse" REALLY isn't as overtly scary as this post makes it sound. it's just a guy who looks like a normal dude (like, until the end). there are the terrifying implications listed here, sure, but again - no actual gore or blood or ANY of the process detailed here. i wouldn't even count him as a "corpse in a kid's movie," really, because at no point does he ever actually LOOK like a dead body.

Just watched the Netflix movie "Next Gen" and it was pretty good! A story about a wholesome friendship, robotic sports, and DEATH.

This is a kids movie rated PG, and I honestly have no idea how they got away with that rating. Why? Not only is one character a literal walking corpse, but another gets vaporized on screen.

It's not that I dislike the movie or that kinda thing, I actually really like it, but it's just surprising to me that they put it in a kids movie and got away with it. Many kids movies have villains that want to kill people, so what's the difference? Let me explain.

Most movies:

•Villain doesn't actually get to kill anybody before their stopped. At the end people may be hurt, there may be destruction, but people seem to be alive and ok. Things can be fixed.

•Any death is just implied, like destroyed buildings and such. Maybe a flashback to a grave or something at most.

•Nobody dies directly on screen. They may fall into a pit, or go down with their ship, but you don't watch them die. You very rarely see an exception, like Mufasas body from The Lion King.

This movie:

•Villain has killed two people at the very least. One on screen, the other off screen but directly mentioned.

•Instead of implying people have died, it not only shows the action of murder but also directly talks about a murder. "Okay, fine! I killed Justin Pin and stole his body. Boo-hoo! SHUT UP! The guy's dead! Get over it!"

•Corpses in children's movies are rare, but here we see one for a good duration of the movie. Justin Pin is not human anymore. He was murdered, his body was hollowed out, and anything organic other than skin was replaced with custom robot parts. No fake skin, no doppelgängers, just a straight up modified corpse. That's some FNAF type shit.

Only watches British Reality TV - Considering he's canonically a film buff, I'll say that this is purely for whatever he gravitates towards on general streaming services. I honestly don't see him being the type to regularly tune in to standard American cable TV, or only does so under specific circumstances like American Ninja Warrior or maybe Forged in Fire if there's absolutely nothing else. It's not something that's exclusive to Americans, — I'm from New Zealand and I do this too, — but Leon absolutely falls into the category of watching British Reality and Game shows purely because of the accents. I'm talking Jeremy Kyle, The Big Fat Quiz of Everything, Taskmaster, The Great British Bake Off and so on and so forth. It doesn't matter that baking isn't his forté or a passion of his, if Josephine curdles her buttercream by over mixing, his hands are in his hair in utter disappointment. 100% tries to mimic their accents too. Has... very dated music tastes - I don't know if you could guess, but the last paragraph included me calling myself out and name dropping some shows I watch anyway or grew up watching, and I'm just saying that this is gonna be no different. Since I'm very passionate about the music I listen to and have the inability to keep my interests separated from the other, of course my love of particular bands will bleed over into my interpretation of Leon's character! My hottest take here is that he doesn't really listen to Deftones. Like he'll occasionally blast My Own Summer, Change, Bored or Rosemary, but anything outside of those? He just didn't listen to 'em. My second hottest take is that he does NOT like Slipknot, which kind of pains me 'cus I do, but I fucking bet you this dude would actually adopt one piece of "Gen Z lingo" or whatever just call them cringe. Very confusing spending habits - On one hand, we all understand that Leon came from money, — he was implied to have been born into a mob family from my understanding? And I doubt he'd ever really had to worry about being fully, irrevocably broke, — but I'm sure that growing up in the U.S Foster Care System made him at least a little more cautious of where his money comes from, where it's going, what he's spending it on, etc. So, on the one hand, he's apprehensive to spend recklessly, particularly on perishables. But also, if he can drop over $100,000USD on a motorcycle that got absolutely fucking cheese grated into the road, and spend a perceived, metric fuck ton of money on designer leather jackets and massive watches, it's gonna be hard for me to call him 'financially conscious'. On one hand, he gets apprehensive on spending more money than he needs to on food since he's "just gonna shit it out later", but if he sees a cool watch or a nice suit in a shop window? Money's suddenly not an issue! Not because he's materialistic, but because the one thing he really maintains a sense of control over in his life are his possessions and the way he dresses. The D.S.O can call him in for another months long mission whenever they please, and all he can realistically do is allow the government to tug on his leash and put him where he's needed. He may as well spend their money on things he wants!

Gets out... enough? But also, not really? - So, personally I've pegged Leon as more of an introverted person, — amateurly typed his MBTI as possibly ISFJ? — so he doesn't really feel the need to go out and meet new people or really hang out with anyone. If somebody invites him out? Sure, he'll go. Otherwise, it rarely occurs to him to meet up with friends or colleagues at a cafe or anywhere. I think he'd prefer to just go there alone, mostly for the sake of having somebody else cook for him as opposed to actively seeking out the atmosphere. It's pure convience in his mind. And remember when I said in the beginning about him accidentally being at least a little misogynistic? Yeah, that was me trying to say that he regularly tries to hit on younger waitresses. Not because he actually wants anything to do with them, but simply because it's an ego boost. He likes that he can make girls half his age blush or offer him their numbers, because it tells him that he's still desirable, and ultimately, that gives him the power to reject them politely and go about the rest of his day. If they don't reject him first, of course. Admittedly, Leon's audacity towards women peaked during Infinite Darkness.

this is excluding the non-canon pilot, but looking at how tall he is in comparison to the other puppets makes me wonder if he's like 7' in the puppet world.

BC LOOK AT HIM HES ALMOST TALLER THAN THE DOOR (doors are like 6'8") sure, there's a chance joe pelling//(EDIT: DID SOME RESEARCH AND HES ACTUALLY ACTED BY TWO PPL NAMED JOSS CARTER AND ADAM MAYNE SORRY) is just really tall, but im ps they use prop(?) doors instead of real ones. it makes me wonder how tall is "the tall one" in this world.

that brings me to wonder about the other puppets though. bc if red guy is really tall then are they all just ;;; tremendously short

duck and yellow are both relatively the same size as the other puppets meant to resemble civilians(?) with a few inches in difference (this excludes the teachers, i'm being a little nitpicky here lol) and thus that likely means they're all too short for the toilets/urinals and the sinks. it's literally child height.

with that said;; ???lmao??? like are over 50% of the puppets just too small for everything?? bc everything honestly seems to fit the red guy just fine, with a few exceptions where he'd probably have to hunch down a bit. especially in their home lol:

red guy's WAY taller than the fridge, and duck n yellow match the mirror perfectly. their house is tailored mostly to the smaller skrimblies. or maybe to a type of puppet that's somewhat taller than yellow and duck, since comparing them to red, technically the freezer would be too high for them to reach.

though honestly this makes me wonder a little bit on what's the norm for puppets, really. to bring up the work episode again, a lot of the aspects of the workplace seem to be made to fit red guy, or at least a somewhat average sized person, such as the bathrooms or Mr. Peterson's office. But the area where the puppets actually work is made to fit them, the shorter ones. duncan's computer is at a fitting size, and the conveyor belt is just right for puppets of yellow and duck's height. i wonder if there's a sort of hierarchy to taller puppets or something.

i could probably keep going with this ramble but i have no idea how to put what im thinking into words, i don't even know if this ramble post makes sense either. long story short, red guy is too tall for everything, yellow and duck are too small for everything, yet still many aspects are made to fit them in this world. the inconsistencies are really entertaining i am hoping they keep coming/gen
