the thing about abuse and cruelty is that no one deserves it, ever.

there's not a magic set of circumstances that make someone deserve abuse. even if they're super annoying or do things to hurt others. because it's the action that's wrong. it's the abuse and harm that's wrong, not who is doing it.

yeah! i have so many thoughts. sorry this response is gonna be long i was cooking this for a league of comic geeks review that i haven’t started writing.

i definitely liked the áo dài green lantern uniform for him as well :3 i remember the first time i read it i thought it would be funny for bà nội in her older age to wear áo bà ba instead

personally i think the main issue i have (which i have for a lot of recent dc stuff coming out) is that the story seemed bigger than the actual length of it. just spending more time with tai would be cool. i liked that it was about gentrification; i wish there was more personal feelings tying me to tai’s character arc. and i felt like i could see the story structure in a way that i can see moana is the hero’s journey.

i wish they had lines of dialogue written in việt rather than having <translated from việt> written under a speech bubble & then they could have had translations in the panel gutters but that’s fine

also i would have preferred for green lanterns to stay mostly adults. i just think that’s something that made them pretty distinct from other superheroes & set the tone for sci fi stuff & the other green lantern comics are pretty adult

Also “The Marvels” had the misfortune to come out after COVID; before COVID there was no “go woke go broke” ecosystem on social media - especially on YouTube or if there was it wasn’t as heavily promoted by the algorithms as it is now 😡😡😡

Yeah, a lot of things definitely got rockier for the MCU post-covid 😔🚬. Captain Marvel (2019) had a massive MRA driven campaign against it, but also the benefit of coming out two months before Endgame/during what was basically Peak™️ MCU, and with a major international press tour in support it. Whereas The Marvels had MRAs gunning for it since the moment a sequel was confirmed and arguably even more after it was revealed to be a female hero team-up movie (and doing so while the YouTube algorithm made it incredibly easy to get recommended such videos), a much more fractured (and in some cases exhausted) MCU fandom*, lots of rumors regarding production problems, and, finally, The Strike and its assorted consequences (no Marvel Hall H, no real press tour, no cast at the premieres, no possibility of any last, last, last minute pickups or reshoots or ADR, and no real distractions from Disney shoving Nia under the bus pre-release).

Even without the strikes, I think it's pretty likely that The Marvels would have faced significant challenges upon release and, even as a Marvels enjoyer, do not think there's many timelines where the final version of the movie is universally beloved. BUT I also think that the strikes basically prevented any really effective attempts at giving the movie a fighting chance/resetting any of the major narratives surrounding it, especially when the various hate campaigns never took a break.

*I am extremely aware that active online fandom is ultimately a small subsection of the theatrical audience, but I do think that fandom can play an outsized role in setting or influencing broader perceptions of a project and do not think the level of discontent/exhaustion/distrust in fandom when the strikes started (2022's lineup of Polarizing Projects and the pre-strike 2023 it's over/we're so back/it's over Quantumania/GOTGV3/Secret Invasion cycle wasn't exactly a good time even if you liked most of what came out 🥲) helped at all.

Something that bugs me is how Sabretooth’s eyes are drawn. The Marvel Wiki said he has amber eyes yet he’s been drawn with white eyes, blue eyes, and red and black eyes a la Gambit.

Which one would you prefer?

No I have the same peeve about it :/ because I also swear he’s never been drawn with amber eyes???? It’s hard to argue that the black on red or the white is supposed to represent amber 😭

But tbh I like the blue in his origins!

But I suppose you could also argue that he’s still more, ah, clean cut and human there? But I’m surprisingly a fan of the black on red! Like- does it make sense? Probably not! But I feel like they do seem to give his whole look and animal schtick a new edge! Besides, I’d argue they actually help make him look more cuddly 🥰

But I haven’t been a fan of the white eyes devoid of pupils. However, I don’t mind them in some instances, namely when he’s suited up! They’re cool to look at sometimes! And it definitely gives his look a more inhuman and sinister sort of aura!

But it’s not something I want to see all the time. Like Wolverine’s white eyes with the mask is cool! And then he takes off the suit and he’s just some dude with blue eyes again! But sabretooth doesn’t even wear a mask lol. I definitely don’t like the white when he’s not in the get-up. Part of me wonders if it’s supposed to showcase a sort of reflective retina like in cats?

One of the things that breaks my heart most about ascended Astarion— and yes I know this is the point, I’m just saying— is if mc is being hesitant to become his spawn and say “a beloved slave is still a slave.”

Idk what it is but like fanfics have really opened my eyes to Aymeric. Like in the MSQ I was like "Oh yeah I like him but idk I like Haurchefant more" but in the Dragonsong War questline + fanfics made me like him a lot. actually. watching the black rider opera made me realize why I didn't like the two caligari musicals I've seen. they're too literal! the black rider has a simple plot and characters, but the avant garde and expressionist performances allow the audience to interpret how the characters are feeling through exaggerated movements, poetic lyrics, at times disturbing music, a bit of absurdism, and moments where you're like, "wait, what am I watching again?" there's emotional whiplash, there's ambiguity, there's dark humor, there's an eclectic mix of music and dance genres. "caligari" as a film and as a story would lend itself very well to this kind of theatre (hell, the influences from it in "the black rider" are very obvious), but the two musical theatre interpretations I've seen aim to be very literal and concrete. there's no ambiguity, no liminality or absurdism. everything is spelled out and structured into these very conventional narratives that don't leave any room for the audience to speculate and reflect. the black rider is an adaptation of carl maria von weber's opera "der freischuetz," but it's also a story about addiction and whatever else the audience may draw from it. "caligari," similarly, is about authority, trauma, whatever- but that room to speculate is what makes it so intriguing. the ballet adaptation probably comes the closest to what I would want to see from one, but can you imagine if a musical theatre or opera adaptation allowed itself to be less restrictive and by-the-book, and leaned more into focusing on the emotions and themes that are difficult to describe, but expressed best through performance? "caligari" shouldn't be made to make sense; the audience is tasked with making sense of it for themselves. there's so much potential there that I feel just isn't being tapped into enough, because it's not the story or the characters that make it so interesting. it's the way the story and characters are vessels for something much, much larger than an early horror movie.
