DCA Info Part 33: Meet Elu Sorrel 🐻

Elu Sorrel (エル・ソレル, Eru Soreru) is the dorm leader of Sagamore. A young princess from a tribe of forest beastmen who excels at archery and is currently having issues dealing with settlers who desire to take her homeland for its resources.

History

Elu was born and raised in the Bearland Woods and is the daughter of Mato Sorrel, chief of a tribe of forest beastmen. She is also the younger sister of Alo Sorrel.

At some point in her life, a group of corporate settlers arrived to the area that her people inhabit in the hopes of claiming the land and exploiting its natural resources.

Sometime following her enrollment at Diamond Crown Academy, she began studying about laws, how to legally keep her homeland safe and policies regarding property in case they try anything drastic and a lawyer has to get involved. As much as she dislikes technology she does know that they have to acknowledge modern tech to help her community progress and live more comfortably.

Personality

Elu is a mostly quiet and stern individual. She is mostly seen with a serious or unpleased look on her face and rarely ever shows a smile.

Despite her calm and composed persona, she can be vicious and downright scary when provoked, but she keeps it bottled up as she thinks that getting angry will lead to unnecessary violence. She has the tendency to be competitive and will accept a challenge that she may or may not regret accepting.

Like fellow dorm leader Jinlong, she has trouble adjusting to the school life due to the culture shock. So, she often keeps to herself while occasionally asking the professors for advice.

Elu ultimately wants what's best for both her people and village and is determined to protect it from the greedy scoundrels who want her home for it's resources.

Appearance

Elu is a girl in her mid-teens. She has tan skin, amber eyes and short black hair with two braided strands held by gold bands. Her ears are visible on the top of her head.

2020 School Uniform

In her original uniform, Elu wore a tan short sleeve dress with brown fringes with the center on the dress being brown and having various patterns. The dress has triangular pattern details that are red, light blue and teal and are divided by gold trim, the dress also has a dark brown hood with the same brown fringes as before. Elu also sports a pair of dark brown leggings with her right leg having a brown cuff with gold trim, teal fabric trimming and red, light blue, white, dark red and brown beaded cuff. For footwear, Elu wears a pair of brown boots with gold trimming and soles and the upper portion is tan in color with black X laces.

Elu accessorizes with many items. This includes a teal headband with red and light blue triangle patterns with gold trim attached to a pair of goldish gears, each of which are in turn attached to a blue, red, and white feather. Other accessories include a dusty gold brooch with an orange gem in the center with blue, red and white feathers, a black glove with tan trim  on her right hand, a tan gauntlet with brown fabric trim, beaded bracelet and orange circular gem on her left arm, a brown corset with orange gem buttons, a tan belt with an orange diamond gem and the mechanical bear mask that she wears around her waist.

2021 School Uniform

Elu now has braid strands held by two red and teal bands each, in addition to orange hair pins with a pair of teal, white and red feathers.

Now with a more simplistic design, Elu wears a dark brown turtleneck top with brown trim underneath a tan top with teal accents that have triangular patterns, brownish trim and dark brown fringes. The top also has deep brown fringe details with orange gem buttons and a dark brown hood. This new ensemble also includes a pair of tan shorts with teal accents and brownish trim alongside dark brown thread details. The dark brown leggings remain the same. The footwear consists of a pair of short brown heeled boots with light brown fringes, buckles and soles.

The accessories include a goldish triangular brooch with an orange gem and teal, white and red feathers as well as a dark brown belt with copper trim.

School Statistics

Elu is a 17 year old 2nd year student. She is classified as Student #12 and is in Class 2-A. She is a member of the Griffin Scout Club and her best subject is Griffin Disc. Her favorite school subject is Animal Linguistics because she grew up surrounded by animals, so this subject was easy for her. Her least favorite school subject is Basic Etiquette due to her having very little knowledge on European etiquette.

For her idol performances, Elu has a surprisingly soft and gentle voice and a high pitch. She can also sing pop songs when needed but prefers a ballad song.

For her choreography, Elu favors interpretive dance and hip hop. She doesn't mix the two dances though, she dances them according to the appropriate song.

Elu greatly looks up to her father and desires to become a great leader just like him.

Alo often sends letters to Elu to inform her what has been happening in the village during the course of her time at DCA.

Pet

Elu has a pet woodpecker named Matelot. They act as the forest guardian and was trained to peck wood at a certain number of times as a form of morse code only Elu could understand.

Fellow Students

Not much is known about Elu's relationships with fellow DCA students due to the fact that she mostly keeps to herself.

It's implied that Elu has a bit of a rivalry with Leona, due to the latter treating her like a child.

Romance

Elu's preferred significant other should be someone who can help her loosen up. She's always stressing about the future of her hometown, so someone who can help give her the knowledge to protect her loved ones as well as maker her feel at ease.

Powers and Abilities

• Magic: Much like her fellow students, Elu can use magic.

• Archery: Elu is an incredibly skilled archer. She can shoot with high accuracy even when on horseback. She is known to even shoot arrows through ring holes that are as small as a pinky finger.

• Agility: Elu has good agility due to climbing up trees and possibly has done the possum hang.

• Morse Coding: Elu is said to have a talent for morse coding.

• Self Navigation: Elu can navigate areas without the use of maps due to her ability to scope the land and know where everything is by memory and scent.

Unique Magic

Elu's unique magic is called "Arrow of the Wind" (自然のそよ風に従う/アロー・オブ・ザ・ウインド, Arō Obu Za Uindo; lit. "Follow Nature's Breeze"). She can direct her arrows to follow her targets with the guiding wind.

Voice

According to her bio, Elu would be voiced by Minami Tsuda, known for her roles as Hime Shiratori in Aikatsu Stars!, Salama in Amagi Brilliant Park and Karin Shijimi in Pretty Rhythm: Dear My Future.

• Her birthday is on December 10th, making her a Sagittarius.

• She is 158 cm tall, making her the shortest of all of the dorm leaders.

• Her favorite food is Buttered Corn while her least favorite food are Biscuits. She dislikes technology and unclean environments.

• She enjoys Wood Carving.

• Her preferred Styling Jewel Outfit Styles are Cultural and Cool.

• For her casual attire, Elu would mostly wear overalls with some boots and a blouse.

• She is dubbed "Little Sturgeon" (チョウザメちゃん, Chōzame-chan) by Floyd due to the fact that it references the song “Steady as the Beating Drum” from Pocahontas. The song serves as a way of introducing the audience to the Powhatan Indians.

• In her spare time, Elu likes to take walks in the forest or go mountain climbing.

• For Elu, her Overblot would occur if the greedy corporate individuals did some sneaky cheating behind the scenes to gain a warrant to tear down her village and the supposed ally she relied on betrays her due to being swindled by greed.

• Elu would be an Eco-Inventor in the future.

• Elu prefers sweets that are used with organic ingredients.

• Elu would smell like morning dew and fresh grass.

• Her signature scent would be the smell of minerals and fresh grass

• Elu fears her village disappearing the moment she comes back from school. The fight against people with power could go on for so long but she still is scared of the thought of their home being destroyed when she was close to defending it.

• Elu had a reputation for being the most difficult and time consuming character for Phoenix to illustrate.

-They use song and dance in their performances, usually a retelling of myths or stories Sorrel has fabricated about their magpie persona

-The only payment they require for their aid is stories from those they helped (some stories they find particularly interesting may find their way into one of their next performances). They may seek out a good meal and a place to stay, but this is less important to them and they won’t mind if they do not get it. They are good enough at providing for themself

-They are very solitary. They often travel for weeks on end without coming across anybody on their journeys, and they don’t mind it

-Their mask is also made to resemble a plague doctor’s mask

-Pretty much nobody has seen them without their mask

-Their “wings” are made from feathers they’ve collected from all kinds of birds (glued together and painted to look like magpie feathers). They have strings of bells and red cloth attached to them. Both wings connect onto small hooks on their gloves and on their back. The wings are used in performances and are removable. In the drawing Sorrel is in the process of putting them on, so one wing is connected properly to their wrist + back, and one is getting attached to their back

-On their belt they carry bags of herbs (for healing and blessings), a knife, trinkets ™️, and nuts/berries/snacks (most of which will end up being fed to birds they encounter on their journeys)

-Loves to collect shiny objects (based on folklore about magpies loving shiny things)

-They can make a warbling humming noise (mimics magpie song)

-They have admiration for the Harkers, particularly the Storyteller

I need to redo her character summary along with a bunch of my older ones, but almost everything's right here in this post

Daughter of Willowpelt, has epilepsy as a result of her nightshade-based brain damage which expresses as absence seizures! Her treatment is a regiment of valerian root.

She takes over as Head of Kitchen Patrol from her mother-in-law, Frostfur. She LOVES food and is very passionate about making sure you never eat raw meat, much to the chagrin of her friend Squirrelflight, who finds uncooked meals absolutely delicious. Sorreltail's favorite food is grasshopper, notably strange for ThunderClan.

She got into cooking in the first place because no one was willing to cook her bugs besides her. Turns out she had a knack for it!

And she's living a lot longer. Her mate Brackenfur is killed in BB!Po3 during the Battle of the False Eclipse, as part of a Dark Forest plot, so I won't be offing her in the Battle of the TRUE Eclipse like canon. Dustpelt is dying instead, defending his last litter-- Seedpaw and Lilyheart.

Sorrel is alive to the current era, but definitely looking to retire soon. She also only has one litter of four kits; Cinderheart, Poppyfrost, Honeysnake, and Molepaw/flight (StarClan angel name).

AITA for yelling at our "leader"?

So. I (15, M) went on a field trip to Savannah with my sister (15, F) and our history project group, and we got a free tour of a place that was supposed to be haunted (the Sorrel Weed House). Yeah, well. We got jumpscared by what I THOUGHT was some kind of hologram or projection or something, just smoke and mirrors to scare us and get a reaction for some stupid live prank TV thing. Our "leader" (15, F) didn't TELL US that it scratched her, even though there was no physical scratch, or that she could see it lurking in the corner before it just popped up behind her, or that she "hears" the freaky sounds that it MADE all the time and that ONLY she can hear that sound, and now we get stuck in some stupid hell dimension every night while being chased by flesh-eating monsters that aren't zombies. Sounds great. I've yelled at her a few times, and I'm kind of starting to feel like a prick about it all, she's under a lot of pressure and is trying to take responsibility for the situation we're in.

I keep getting pissed and snapping at her or the others. Idk. I keep thinking about what would happen to my mom and my sister if something happens to me.

But she still should have told us when she felt like she got scratched. Or that she saw it before. Or that she heard it.

Anyways. That's not the point. AITA? I feel like I am.

What's Sage and Mace's relationship like?

What about their dad?

Difficult, but the love is there. Mace and Sage are just very different individuals, and due to certain circumstances and events of their childhood, they don’t have a very close relationship. You’ll find more info about them in this post!

As for their father, Sorrell is a very stern and exacting man, and expects his boys to go about things a certain way. When they were children he taught them that their behavior and actions had to be just so to bring honor to their name. Mace did well in succeeding in his father’s eyes, being accomplished in all the ways he thought a man ought to be accomplished. Sage…struggled, and Sorrell wasn’t happy about that.

As an adult, Sage has cut off all contact with his father. Mace is still in contact with Sorrell, which is a point of contention between him and his brother. But…they’re still brothers. They do care for one another, even if their past and personalities get in the way.

He's also never given up. He's clever, bright, and wise. He will become buddies with you. He is very respectful and cautious. He is the hero who is always by your side. Personality: He is a prickly, confrontational individual, but he is more bearable. He is a sanctuary guardian who takes care of the site with ease. His sibling works with him. He watches out for rations and isn't afraid to be severe. He isn't afraid to get his hands dirty and will go to any length to protect his loved ones. He is an extremely powerful skeleton. He appears regal and composed. He is silent yet dangerous. He is harsh and vicious, but with enough work, you can win him over. He is very protective of his friends and may appear violent when defending them, yet if accepted, he is a sympathetic and compassionate person. He has a strong temper and will not tolerate bullshit from others.

Appearance: He has three large jagged scars on his right eye. He also has a crack on his jaw. The middle scar is the largest compared to the other two. He has a scar on his neck. He has deep red eyelights. He has a tattoo on his left arm of vines with begonias on them. On his back is a tattoo of a rose with thorns. He has a large marigold with vines tattooed on his chest.

Sorrel - My Old AU Rewritten Horrorfell Sans

Personality: He's a chilly, furious skeleton. He has a harsh demeanor but is passionate and flirtatious. He possesses a very cool flame-like temper and never loses it unless pushed too hard. He takes his job seriously and will not back down when it comes to it. He is concerned about his friends and family, but he keeps his feelings hidden. When you first meet him, he appears rude and frigid, but as you get to know him, he becomes quite sweet and friendly to you in general. He is a genius who understands this, and he will not allow anyone to easily kill him or his family. He regularly softens his stern exterior. He bites hard and does not back down.

Appearance: He has red eye lights and a large nasty scar on his left eye that is in the shape of a knife slash on his face. He has a large crack in his skull. He has a golden tooth. He has a tattoo of his rib cage of vines with starflowers on them.

Oh, good question, I haven’t really thought about it in my entire life, but why not sharing my current team dimension of the Arsism AU, so basically the team is kinda like my mother’s workers, Versil is an annoying AF boss (like my mother), Victor hates him (like me except i only hate her personality not her herself), Dahlia is like my mother’s old secretary (if thats the word for the one who sits in the office & does the job of the boss), she can’t stands dealing with problems (like Sorrel, damn, she hates him soooo much mainly due to the fact he always stopped team dimension & is unbeatable), but unlike my mom’s old secretary, she didn’t quit because she wanted money (in my AU Versil was cheapstake on other people like my mamma so he paid them a low price of 100 poké for a month, lol) and was too unsuccessful to get a proper job, A & B & every robot of the team were loyal to him mainly cuz they are just that way lol, Trey hates fucking everyone in the team & always dreams of killing Versil extremely brutally like in horror movies (yes, Trey’s mind is dark, just like Sorrel) i haven’t even finished the game so I can’t tell the exact info but i know the story pretty well, now to lore stuff:

(Warning, i ended up telling just things about the characters themselves, mainly Versil, instead of facts about the team)

When Versil ran away to commit crimes (cuz the concept of him opening a portal to the xenoverse & making his team members harm pokemon & people was kinda a crime) a certain grunt was like “didn’t you had a wife and a son?” And then Versil shoot him with an RPG & said “we don’t mention emotional stuff” (it happened before mainstory events)

Trey once tried stabbing Versil but he failed miserably & just waited for it to end

The first to find Versil in the spaceship was Sorrel (second was Aster & third were Trey & Alice) & Versil did do all this “manipulative & dark talk” (basically him admitting all his crimes while sweet talking to Sorrel to make him submit) but what was different from the original game (canon) was that in order to get him to open a xenoverse portal & hand him Chrissy (Trishout) was literally torture him to get him to do so (yeah, Versil during the xenoverse incident was a horrible person) & even be a lil bit violent with him, luckily Aster came to save Sorrel

Remember Versil’s X Mewtwo? So i made a place for X Mewtwo in the AU as well, in the AU Versil abused Bingus (x Mewtwo) & treated him horribly, so the moment where Bingus is ordered to block the way to the portal, Aster prepares to fight but Sorrel’s like “dude! Why resorting to violence?!” & spoke with Bingus (btw, Sorrel nicknamed him Bingus, and about speaking part, Sorrel & every furry understands the pokemon language) & even noticed some scars on him, probably from Versil or something and then Sorrel convinced Bingus to join them in the fight against Versil & Dragalisk & so he does cuz duh, Sorrel beated Versil easily in his Alter form (his Alter form is just straight up violent & talks in french) so why wouldn’t he

Victor in my AU hates Trey but not as much as he hates the rest cuz he was his crush’s (whatever Trey’s mamma name is) son, but he literally hates the entire existence cuz he is an antipathy

Dahlia eventually starts hating Victor after the events in the old bunker of team dimension cuz she understood he was just an unstable bitch

Trey got revived mysteriously, nobody knows why, but the reason for it was the crown Sorrel wears in the “completely giving up” animation (where it’s basically summing up Sorrel’s entire adventure & his trauma in short) which is a gift from the 2 gods of the justified dimension (Cypress & Atlas), because Trey’s death was considered “unjustified” & they wanted to make up for Sorrel’s trauma cuz he saved the entire planet so they created it to revive Trey

We all see that Versil has an Entei in the canon, right? But nobody tells us why, so in my AU back then when Chrissy & Versil were edgy teenagers (Chrissy was edgy cuz he was a simp for Versil/Silver & wanted to be like him but he took it to a whole other level) Silver wanted to catch a legendary so he can beat Chrissy but the 3 legendary beasts were too much for him to handle & then Chrissy caught Entei for him in brutal-style (brutal-style is an ancient fighting style of the furries that their ancestor made which is basically fighting without using pokemon & brutally like wild animals) & Silver was staring with an horrified & pitiful look, pitying the poor Entei that got beated up by the crazy, wingless dragon & being horrified at that sight, but then it faded when he finally got a legendary, Aster’s Suicune is a whole other story, completely unrelated to Versil & Chrissy’s edgy & insane childhood story

Important Info:

Submissions will be open one week (March 15-22), but will stay open if I have less than fifteen submissions or close early if I receive more than one hundred.

The current plan is a 32 entry bracket, but I will consider doing a 64 entry one if I get enough interest/submissions.

There will probably be a couple of preliminary rounds before the actual polls come out, because there are a couple of authors whose work I expect to see multiple submissions for.

Propaganda is welcome, but please wait to submit it at least until the first preliminaries come out (this can be done by using the ask box or making your own post and @ing me)

Voting/Submitting Guidelines:

The goal here is to determine which is the most classic piece of literature. You can vote based on your personal favorite, what you think had the most cultural impact, what is the most popular or timely today etc. 

I DO NOT want to see any moral complaints. Many of these authors/works were racist, sexist, etc. and I fully condemn that, but we can separate the art from the artist and still understand the importance of/enjoy the work despite its flaws.You’re free to not like/not vote for a book due to offensive material, but I don’t want to see tags/comments/asks saying “you shouldn’t have included x because it’s racist” or “nobody vote for y it’s misogynistic.” This isn’t “which classic lit book is the most morally correct”.

Submission Criteria:

The book must have been published between 1600-1970 CE

It must be written by a European (Russia/the Ural mountains to Ireland, not including Turkey/The Ottoman Empire), Canadian, or United States American*

The book must be fictional and considered a novel (no short stories, plays, poetry etc.)

You can’t submit a book already on the auto-inclusion list

You can’t submit for an author already on the auto-inclusion list as I’m only allowing one book per author

You can submit a series together (ex: Sherlock Holmes) or an individual book from the series (ex: A Study in Scarlet), just make sure to specify in the form

Up to five submissions per person, but you can only submit each book once

You have to make your submission through the google form (below). Submissions in comments, asks, etc. will not count (sorry, but I need to be able to keep track).

*on the Eurocentrism of this criteria: There is so much amazing Islamic, African, S./E. Asian, Pacific, and South American literature out there, but I feel it really merits its own bracket by someone who understands the material more and that it wouldn’t really get the fair chance it deserves in this bracket anyway as I expect it to be American and Brit Lit heavy as is and more people will come out to support those books so I might as well just limit the criteria off the bat.

(This is a work of fiction, meant to be a window onto what a transitional time between now and a solarpunk future might look like)

Today is one of my favorites, at least when it comes to work: on-site removal of invasive plants and their conversion into fertilizer to be used on the resident's food gardens.

Of course, not all invasive plant species are easily composted, and even the ones that are have to be treated a bit differently.

This plot is small, in town, and has a strong population of Spanish Bluebells, which are unfortunately extremely aggressive in our climate, and capable of spreading both by seed, and tiny bulbules that fall off the main bulb as you pull them up. They're also poisonous, so not a good forage crop, alas. The technique we're using today is hand pulling them all up (after loosening the soil gently), and gathering them all into two 50 gallon barrels. The barrels contain them, and will fill with rain water, and in some months, the dark, potent smelling water can be filtered and then used for fertilizer. The bulbs and seeds never touch the ground again, so there's no chance of contamination.

Unfortunately, this is not a one and done kinda job- we will definitely be back in future years- and for ever couple of weeks until the bluebells stop pushing up new growth and instead go dormant for the summer dry season.

While we're working on removing them, it doesn't really make sense to grow anything fragile or brushy on the plot, so for now, we're just encouraging tough plants that will survive getting bluebells pulled up around and through them, like clover and yarrow and wood sorrel and the like. Eventually, the family will be able to join their neighborhood disbursed garden commons and help raise local, organic foods and also plant the native plants that support so many of the beneficial insects that have been struggling from the population crash.

Those insects used to be really under appreciated, but now it's common knowledge that they support pollination and that having a healthy ecosystem helps prevent the plagues of plant "pests" that people used to spend so much money and effort trying to eradicate! Turns out just letting some of those native wild flowers grow in and around your garden has a massive impact! Who knew! Beauty and bounty all together!

P.S., here's a good old resource for more info about planting plants that support beneficial bug species! Of course, being decades out of date, it focuses on the non-native plants that the research back then focused on, but it gives you the idea! https://catalog.extension.oregonstate.edu/sites/catalog/files/project/pdf/pnw550.pdf Native plants also attract and provide habitat for beneficial bugs, and what's best for each spot is going to vary- a lot.

Fen…oh my dear Fen…he certainly carries quite a bit of baggage wherever he goes. So much that I could not choose a single song to encapsulate him. Beware, the info below contains mentions of neglect, mental turmoil, death, and potential threats to his person, both external and internal and may also contain some minor spoilers. For those who don’t want to read, that’s alright. The songs I choose are Who am I? (from Les Misérables ) and Wake me up when September ends (Green Day)

Who am I?

The question is always there in the back of his mind. He’s spent practically his whole life with the foxes. He knows many of the villagers, and has befriended several youngsters his age. And yet Fen knows that his appearance marks him out as different, and as the relationship between the foxes and the birds of the forest is strained and rocky, that difference may get him killed. And so he has to keep himself hidden, concealed and disguised whenever he leaves his house.

Such a crisis of identity has left Fen confused and unsure. Having a parent to confide in would certainly help, though sadly Fen does not have such a luxury.

Here comes the rain again/ Falling from the stars. Drenched in my pain again/ becoming who we are.

The loss of Sorrel hit him hard. He was only 3 when his adoptive mother succumbed to sickness. As hard as the loss was for him, it hit Caine harder. He lost almost all will and conviction, leaving Fen to fend for himself. Having to provide at such a young age, and with no one whom they can talk to about his true feelings, Fen is prone to falling into bouts of depression, and some of them can get really dark and deep.

What keeps him going is the thought of what others would want for him, and that he must push on in search of brighter days.

Summer has come and passed/ The innocent can never last

And must my name until I die be no more than an alibi?

What is his biggest opportunity is also the biggest threat. Now approaching independence, he will have to make decisions that could expose his secret. And that is a dangerous proposition. As mentioned, the bad blood between the foxes and birds runs deep. Fen cannot be sure if anyone would understand if his secret was revealed.

New project, can you help sharing it?

Hey folks it’s a big day today. After weeks of work the Wicked Wanderers Winter Bundle is live.

It kind of started a looong time ago. When I was a kid, I grew up in a super boring place, a small secluded village in a French island, and before discovering RPGs, the thing that gave me the most joy was a thing called Pochettes Suprises: Surprise Bags. Small paper bags containing a dozen random cheap plastic and cardboard toys: a plane, a soldier, a doll, a dino. They cost just a buck and we all loved them because they were modular: we could invent stories and games for weeks with just a single Pochette.

This sparked the idea behind this bundle I’m releasing today: bring together a pack of cool and beautiful zines and gaming accessories to make a cool grown up TTRPG enthusiast version of the Pochettes. The bundle has a strong vibe and a super modular structure, with 2 full zines, NPCs, adventure hooks, dice drop map, solo oracles and even a solo prisoncrawl game and more. It contains 15 items made by mostly emergent designers: I'm trying to support new voices with the store. You might know several of them: Philipp Teich, Foresight Studio, Christian Sorrell/Meatcastle, Philip Jensen, Nyhur, Alfred Valley. There are some super interesting and diverse takes on Mörk Borg, even a few mini adventures with a Mythos vibe.
