YMCA-YWCA tries to fend off attempt to build a road near Camp Thunderbird

The YMCA-YWCA of Vancouver Island is preparing for another legal battle to block road construction through wilderness near its Camp Thunderbird site at Glinz Lake in the Sooke Hills.

The commissioner, the chief regulatory authority overseeing mineral claims and leases in the province, had removed the mineral titles after concluding the company, Alberta-based Victoria Teleport Corp., held the mineral rights for three sections of land for purposes other than mining.

Gent said the company is a group of real estate developers. “We believe the primary intent is to try to build a subdivision out there,” he said, noting the YMCA-YWCA joined a complaint filed by the deputy chief gold commissioner in late 2021.

The new hearing comes after Justice Jennifer Lynn Whately ruled last week that the process involved in appealing the commissioner’s decision was vague and unstructured, which meant it was procedurally unfair for Victoria Teleport.

The company’s three mineral claims are landlocked by private lands and Crown land. That means it needs permission from private landowners, in this case the YMCA-YWCA, or the province to access the claim area. While the YMCA-YWCA has allowed foot access to the claims, it has balked at allowing any vehicle access.

“They’ve been trying to get road access to the site for a long time,” said Gent, who noted the entire surrounding area is wilderness. “Our commitment is to protect those lands.”

Gent also noted that some of the Crown parcels in question could be part of treaty negotiations with First Nations.

• Shauna is the broody cousin who doesn't even wanna come to this stupid thing, she's not even gonna have fun so why can't her parents let her stay home? She ends up having fun and her parents have to drag her back to the car to get home at the end of the day.

• Taissa is the one that decides to take on babysitting or help out around the kitchen or whatever and usually has to be told to let loose and have fun because she's so type A she tries to organise shit she has no authority over. The smaller cousins do stacks on Taissa. Van usually starts the dogpile.

• Van is the laid-back cousin who sets up the video games and is beloved by all the tiny cousins. She clears everyone at Mario kart and smash bros and is the only one who can get Taissa to unwind. Taissa is the only one who can clear her in smash.

• Misty is that cousin who hangs out with the adults and tries to help around the kitchen all the time until her aunt forcibly drags her to the rec room (at the rich relatives' house) where everyone is playing board games and stuff. She finds a puzzle or a deck of cards and tries to get a game of solitaire going but some younger cousins decide to mess with her and she retaliates and ends up in a prank war.

• Mari is the younger cousin who fucks with everybody. Brings gag gifts and tries that fucking stick of chewing gum prank every. Goddamn. Holiday. You know which one I mean:

On the upside she packs a fucktonne of snacks which she shares if you're chill.

Her gum prank snapped one of Jackie's fake nails off once so Shauna retaliated by popping her inflatable duck. It was a whole thing.

• Lottie is petting all the pets. She's running around the house chasing the cat. She's not gonna pull its tail, she hasn't done that since she was two, but she will feed the dog under the table to try to win him over. She's the reason you have ants.

• Laura Lee's family is the one that insists on saying a prayer before every meal. Everyone else is messing around at the kids table but she's actually paying attention, or if it's in a different room, she's the one leading it. She's that one that hangs around the back of the group and acts like a moral compass. "Yeah Mr Sharpe's may have run over your bike Natalie but I don't think it's right to paint his dog red".

• Javi is the baby of the family and everyone is super protective and he is that kid that is just chill and will sit down and colour for fun and he gives out handmade gifts like macaroni necklaces and you all have matching friendship bracelets courtesy of Javi Martinez 🥹

• Travis is that asshole who takes his shit out on everyone else and ruins the vibe. His little brother tries to hang with him but he thinks he's too cool to give him the time of day and just pushes him away, and ends up sitting alone cause no one likes that he's an asshole. Most of the cousin jokes are about how he just needs to get laid. He usually just hogs some prime real estate on the couch and heckles everyone playing video games. Won't play anymore because the few times he tried after talking shit he got his ass summarily handed to him so now he just sits there and sooks and brags about how he could beat everyone if he wanted to, he's just taking it easy on everyone because he's nice. He's the biggest asshole there.

Since reading Fingersmith, I've been turning over thoughts about all the ways it differs from The Handmaiden. I knew going in the most obvious difference — the setting, with the novel in Victorian England and the film in c. 1930s Korea — and I also knew that comparison shouldn't be used as any kind of judgment here, as this film is not meant to be a close adaptation and each is very much its own work, with its own style, and its own cultural texture and perspective.

Still, I admit that before I started reading, I wondered whether I'd find the novel as engaging as I might otherwise, considering I already knew the big plot twists. But yes! Yes, I absolutely did. Knowing the plot twists did not at all detract from the enchanting prose and character work. Sure, it might've been fun to be an unspoiled reader and feel the full force of that shock at the end of Part 1, but instead I had the pleasure of picking out all the little bits of foreshadowing and observing what Waters discloses in the narrative and what she doesn't and how it all weaves together. And honestly, having seen the film only once or twice before and not recently, by the time I got to Part 3 I truly couldn't remember almost anything of what was supposed to happen next.

Only upon rewatching The Handmaiden yesterday did I realize that even an eidetic recall of the film wouldn't have helped me at that point anyway. For while Part 1 of the film hews pretty close to Part 1 of the book in terms of the core narrative and plot points, Part 2 begins to diverge somewhat, and Part 3 is dramatically different.

I'm not going to give away specifics, because although The Handmaiden seems pretty well known on this site, I don't get the impression that as many people have also read Fingersmith... and they should! I really recommend it!

But it's just so interesting, looking at these two distinct but related pieces of media and thinking about which aspects Park chose to emphasize versus which ones Waters explores more. (Granted, a 600-page novel always has more room to explore things than a film, even a fairly long one.) The Handmaiden, visually and thematically, is lush. It leans heavily into the weird, the grandiose, and the erotic, amplifying them to a stunning style and a narrative that oozes strangeness and sexuality. Fingersmith certainly has these aspects, yes, but it's all... grimier. The writing itself is lovely, yes, but the settings are full of squalor, sadness, and cruelty that is disturbing more because of its mundanity than because of its eccentricity. The household of petty criminals that Sue/Sook-Hee grew up in, barely a blip in the film, are major characters in the novel, and we get a much deeper look at her backstory, her relationships, and her life before the start of the plot. Her impoverished neighborhood and the harshness of life for the poor/lower class are highlighted, and there's no high art to the uncle's collection of p*rnography or the readings of it. And the main setting, the uncle's house and estate, is no impressive piece of architecture, but rather a place of stagnation and decay.

I'm only rambling thoughts here, not trying for any real meaningful analysis, but I suppose my point is that it turns out that even when the film does follow fairly close to the book, the two are still strikingly different experiences, not only in their settings but in their style and themes. Both are a pleasure. And I'm glad I read the novel so that I can enjoy thinking about how each work uses its different style to achieve much the same overall narrative goals.

Pak Bo-hi, 74, allegedly the second-ranking official of the Unification Church, has been arrested and detained by prosecutors in Seoul on charges of fraud. The church was founded by Rev. Moon Sun Myung, a controversial religious figure who has called himself the “son of God.”

Mr. Pak allegedly received 2 billion won ($1.7 million) from a real estate developer in December [2003] after promising the developer the rights to build an apartment complex on land in [Sutaek-ri], Guri, Gyeonggi province, owned by Ilhwa Corp., a food processing company owned by the church. The sum was a down payment for the sale of the land, prosecutors said.

Mr. Pak failed to make good on the promise, although the circumstances surrounding the contract are not fully known. Mr. Pak returned only 1.3 billion won to the developer.

A Unification Church official told the JoongAng Ilbo that Mr. Pak was no longer an official of the church, and is only a lay member. He said Mr. Pak had not asked the church to pay back any of the funds that had been given to the developer. It was not clear whether Mr. Pak had any church sanction for the contract.

Mr. Pak was the key official in arranging for Rev. Moon to meet the late North Korean dictator, Kim Il Sung, in Pyeongyang. He founded the Washington Times, a church-owned daily newspaper in Washington, D.C. in 1982; he was also the publisher and president of the Segye Ilbo, a Seoul daily, from 1991 to 1993.

For a very long time, I avoided watching American Psycho because I had seen the scene where Patrick Bateman murdered Paul Allen and I felt that through watching that singular scene, I’d already watched the movie. There were times when I wanted to get a sense of what the movie was about and I read the Wikipedia page about it, so I had already spoiled it for myself before actually watching it. Then there was the scene of Bateman talking in depth about Genesis (one of my all-time favorite bands) and I knew it was really good. 

The ending is a bit confusing in the sense that during the whole movie, it’s supposed to be apparent that Patrick Bateman is murdering all of these people but near the end, no one believes him. Not a single person. This is most notable when he goes to Paul Allen’s apartment to clean it out, I presume, but it’s empty and there is a real estate agent there trying to sell it. She tells Bateman that he “shouldn’t be there”, but that is the only person to somewhat acknowledge what he had done.

In an article by Cinema Blend, they describe the ending in such a way that when put into words, it really makes no sense. When Bateman presumingly kills Paul Allen, he makes sure to leave a voicemail saying that he went to London for business. He confesses to his lawyer about murdering him, but his lawyer refutes this by saying that he had seen Allen in London, while calling Bateman someone else’s name. Clearly this is confusing for all parties involved. It’s completely plausible that he killed all of those prostitutes but he most likely didn’t actually kill Paul Allen. It was all just a really vivid false reality; Bateman’s just imagining what he could do to Paul Allen.

The ending of Bong-Joon-Ho’s Parasite is almost as confusing as the ending of Mary Hatton’s film. Parasite tells the story of two families of totally different economic backgrounds, but they both consist of parents, one boy and one girl. 

The Kim family folds pizza boxes for a living and lives in a semi-basement. They use the smoke from the public fumigation as free disinfectant. Their luck seems to turn around when the son, Ki-woo, lands a job tutoring the daughter of the wealthy Park family (Vulture). The Kim family ten begins to infiltrate the household by pretending to only know each other through vague networks: Ki-jung becomes an art therapist for the boy Da-sung, Chung-sook the mother becomes the housekeeper, and Ki-taek the father as the driver. There’s another plot twist when it’s revealed that the original housekeeper for the Park family, Mun-kwang, was keeping her husband, Kun-sae, in the basement of the large house for four years. 

Some stuff goes down, and Kun-sae comes out of the basement during Da-sung’s birthday party and stabs Ki-jung, the boy faints and the parents demand that Ki-taek drive them to the hospital, even as their own daughter is bleeding to death. Their lives are still constrained by servitude, and that they work merely at the whims of their employer (Vulture). Ki-taek then stabs the wealthy Park patriarch and runs away. He hides in the bunker, the last place the police would look for him and a wealthy German family ends up buying the house. The particularities may have changed, but everyone’s station has remained the same. There would always be another wealthy person to live upstairs, just as there would be another poor person positioned beneath them.

These two movies are definitely worlds apart in terms of almost everything. They both have ambiguous endings and they involve murder, but other than that they don’t have much in common. The ambiguity of both ends definitely helps both movies because it allows for conversation people probably otherwise wouldn’t have.

Patrick Bateman is described as a materialistic, self-absorbed, wealthy playboy but underneath the surface, he is filled with violent impulses and insecurity (Course Hero). This is important to the ambiguity of the ending because although it was evident that he murdered all of these people, no one believes him because of his social status, so the viewer is forced to make assumptions for themselves; did Bateman actually kill those people?

Personally, movies like this never really interested me because psychological horror is my favorite movie genre, I don’t like confusing endings like this and mostly because I am horrible at reading between the lines. I always think too critically about the endings and would much prefer they would outright say what happened; but that’s what makes a movie a movie, audience speculation.

Parasite is a totally different beast in my eyes. While the ending was ambiguous, it was a whole lot more clearer than American Psycho in the sense that Ki-woo has a very clear idea on what he wants to do if he were not in the position he was in at the end of the movie. He wants to buy the Parks’ house so he can see his father again, but obviously that won’t happen after what Ki-taek did.

'Save me! Holmes’ Jo Kwon-Bona, scramble as a coordinator!

The MBC entertainment program 'Save me! In ‘Holmes’, a family looking for a place for a family of four to live in a new city in Gyeonggi-do appeared as a client.

On this day, Bona from the Bok team and Jo Kwon from the Duck team appeared as intern coordinators. Jo Kwon and Bona showed their sincerity (!), saying, “I am a passionate listener.”

Heung Jin’s father in‐law, former International Peace Foundation President Bo Hi Pak (father of Heung Jin Moon's wife, Hoon Sook Moon), also used to boast quite some influence within the church.
