Soo Lin Yao is a sentimental girl who keeps a picture of herself and her brother in her flat (just like a certain consulting detective). She is also clever, brainy, passionate and resourceful and not afraid to get her hands dirty, and she thinks that if people get to know her they wouldn't like her.
It makes sense that Sherlock seemed to feel a connection with her extremely quickly.

**My only complaint with the episode: JW definitely should have saved Soo Lin Yao ;_; …or at least try. Infamous moment when the show forgets that he is a soldier and would know better than to leave a key witness alone with a ninja assassin around.

Rewatched 'The Blind Banker' today. Undeservedly marked by the most viewers as one of the weakest 'Sherlock' episodes, in my rating it occupies the place in the middle closer to the top, and it is my favourite episode from season 1. A rare chance to see a typical Sherlock's and John's investigation, without personal drama and permanent supporting characters (only Mrs Hudson and Molly appear for a couple of moments). The pacing of the story is not too quick and not too slow, the investigation is joint with the depiction of day-to-day routine, and the interactions between the characters are fun to watch. I also like how this episode depicts London - it looks very vivid and genuine. The plot itself is not an adaptation of one concrete Conan Doyle's story, but is more a mixture of various references and ideas, and it works in its favour. Also 'The Blind Banker' presents some very interesting performances from the supporting actors. Gemma Chan is very touching as Soo Lin Yao, Bertie Carvel is a perfect 'posh boy' Seb Wilkes, and Zoe Telford has a good chemistry both with Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. It's a shame that Sarah Sawyer, her character, had not that much screen time in this series. So it's good that some fic-writers bring her back after the events of season 4.

“China has imposed recent restrictions on its entertainment industry, including banning those under 18 from playing online games during the weekdays. What are the potential consequence of this? Would it encourage more surveillance?”
Internet usage has expanded more quickly in China than anywhere else in the world (Chiu, C, Lin, D and Silverman, A 2012). In December 2011, China had 513 million Internet users, compared with 67 million in Germany, 121 million in India, and 245 million in the United States (Chiu, C, Lin, D and Silverman, A 2012). According to research by Chin (2023), they use WeChat as the ‘super app’ that stands for multiple ones we use to rule them all. How did China restrict children under the age of 18 from playing internet games during the week? They worked through WeChat. After China carried out restrictions on the industry of entertainment, persons who want to play online games must identify their age by uploading personal information to WeChat. Not only that, but if we want to play China's online games, we must also prove our age.
Tumblr media
WHY?
Authorities in China, the world’s largest video games market, have worried for years about addiction to gaming and the internet among young people, setting up clinics that combine therapy and military drills for those with so-called “gaming disorders” (Cyprus Mail 2021). They are concerned about the influence of excessive screen time on young people's physical and mental health, in my opinion. Games like 'He Ping Jing Ying' and 'Wang Zhe Rong Yao' are well-known in China, and the majority of young people like them. The authorities may be concerned that violence in games would impact young people.
Furthermore, it is possible that China developed such limits in response to parental pressure from children under the age of 18. According to the Game Industry Group's study (Zen Soo 2023), more than 75% of minors in China played online games for less than three hours per week, and most parents were satisfied with the new limits. Parents seek to encourage their children to live healthier lifestyles and do better academically, but in my opinion, young people should balance their studies and entertainment, and they should not be prohibited from playing online games.
Tumblr media
Impact of this restrictions on China’s entertainment industry
On 1 September 2019, the new restrictions forbid children under 18 to play online games from Monday through Thursday; they can only play for one hour, from 8p.m. to 9p.m., on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays (Cyprus Mail 2021). Some young people rely on online games to relieve academic stress, and the restrictions on China's entertainment industry may make them feel stressed. According to what I've seen on the news, many students attempt suicide because they are too stressed about their academic performance. According to research (Bloomberg 2023), academic pressure has contributed to a rise in suicides among young people in China in recent years.
Furthermore, the restrictions on China's entertainment industry may have a serious effect on the gaming industry, particularly those that rely on the youth market. Soon after the news, shares in companies like as Amsterdam-listed Prosus, which owns 29% of video gaming company Tencent, fell 1.45% (Brooke 2021). According to Brooke (2021), there are 720 million gamers in China, with around 110 million of them being under the age of 18. Because these young people often spend their money on games, restricts in China's entertainment industry may result in economic losses for the country.
Would it encourage more surveillance?
In my perspective, China's entertainment industry restrictions, such as those on online gaming for minors, are likely to lead to increasing surveillance. They might encourage extra surveillance by setting age restrictions and monitoring internet behaviour at the request of parents. Authorities might be forced to use stronger methods of verifying the age of users in order to guarantee compliance with restrictions on gaming. This might include the collecting and analysis of personal information, which could lead to increased surveillance. Furthermore, in order to set gaming restrictions at specific times of day, authorities may establish monitoring systems to track a player's online activities; this entails surveillance.
Tumblr media
Conclusion
In conclusion, public sentiment and privacy concerns may impact how the government monitors. Increased monitoring might cause privacy concerns and cause problems about the proper balance of regulatory measures and personal freedoms. As with any policy, the effects and reactions will change over time, and the Chinese government may modify its approach based on a range of factors, including public opinion and views of the measures' success.

Cupid, hi!!! (Always a pleasure to hear from you 🥰🥰🥰)
It means Sherlock needed some ehm gay hydration 😬 🍆💦
Ok, a bit more serious take after the read more
I wouldn't go deep to assign meaning to anything about chinese culture in The Blind Banker; I know someone ages ago wrote an extensive meta on how the writers/production fell into some orientalism traps. I'm talking about a perhaps 10-12 years old meta; and tumblr being a search nightmare, I can't point to it.
Evenmore, I walked out of s4 alive because I learned to zoom out ref. details and meta meanings; the scene meaning for me still is about Soo Lin Yao being a mirror for Sherlock, tea still means gay, and the watering of the teapot and "meant to be touched, not sitting behind glass" well, it speaks for itself.
In the Drinks code; what does the (badly) preformed tea ceremony at the beginning of The Blind Banker mean?
Pretty much this, but with….something a bit more….viscous?

Sherlock sympathises with Soo Lin Yao, a girl he just met.
Instead of pursuing Shan, Sherlock chooses to untie Sarah and comfort her.
Sherlock is so delighted to tell Amanda the value of her hairpin.
I'm sure this guy doesn't have much empathy for others.

Chapter 4: Cases, Reds, And Brother Mines
“Sherlock?” And John saw the detective’s blood freeze. Before he even turned around, he herd a quiet whisper of “Vic?” before swirling around to see a boy, maybe seventeen or eighteen, with spiky brown hair, charming brown eyes pale skin, and a charismatic smile. He nodded in greeting at everyone before reaching out to Sherlock for a handshake.
“Hey there, Sherl,” he said, stepping closer and closer until they were millimeters from each other. Sherlock grabbed John and practically shoved him in front of this Vic, who John wasn’t liking much, as he felt a surge of jealousy run through him.
“Victor, meet John, my boyfriend. John, Victor Trevor, Victor, John Watson,” Victor seemed disappointed, but moved a couple inches away from Sherlock.
“Moved on, didn’t you?” he pouted.
“Yes,” Sherlock almost whispered.
“With someone named John. Really? I figured you would go for someone more… out of the ordinary.” Sherlock seethed.
“Says the man named Victor. John is the most unordinary man I’ve ever met. He keeps me occupied and off the drugs. He saved me when I was at my worst, complimented me when I was at my best, he found his way into my life and made it so much better when I was almost out of hope.” John was stunned at this surprisingly heartfelt speech. So, it seemed, was Victor.
“How did you die, by the way?” Victor asked.
“Jumped off a roof.”
“Had enough, of him, did you?” Sherlock mumbled the same thing that he did when John asked. John caught the words ‘sniper,’ ‘Mrs. Hudson,’ and this time, ‘Moriarty’. John would probably force an explanation out of him later, but right now he didn’t have the time.
“And what about you, John Watson? How did you die?” Sherlock’s eyes laser focused on him, and John realized he had yet to tell Sherlock how he died. He took a deep breath before confessing,
“I shot myself in the head at Sherlock’s gravestone about a month after he died. I just… couldn’t take living life without him.” Sherlock looked stunned.
“John… what… you…” John gave his love a sad smile.
“Yeah. I did.”
“But why…” Sherlock seemed at a loss for words.
“Because” John shrugged. “I couldn’t take it. I tried, I really did, but it was like when I came back from Afghanistan. Life had no purpose, no meaning, because you had become both of those things. I loved you so much and I couldn’t…” he stuttered into silence. Sherlock took John in his arms and pulled him against his coat. John buried his head in the soft fabric of the scarf and cried. He cried and whispered, “I love you,” and Sherlock cried and whispered, “I feel the same.”
“Um… So…” a different voice said after a few minutes after. “We were looking for Sherlock Holmes, but we can always come back later…” Sherlock and John quickly separated, looking embarrassed. Two women stood there. A middle-aged woman in a pink pantsuit and a Chinese young adult wearing a floral dress and holding a tea kettle.
“Jennifer Wilson and Soo Lin Yao” John whispered. People who died in their first two cases. Soo Lin smiled.
“I came here to thank you,” she said. “I met Jennifer after a month or so of waiting and we found out what connected us. You two and your bravery.” Sherlock nodded. Jennifer spoke next.
“The cab driver, Jefferson Hope? The poison he gave me didn’t actually kill me for quite a while. I survived long enough to hear a police officer say, ‘Call Sherlock Holmes’.” A voice blared over the loudspeakers. The same girl in the booth, sounding frustrated.
“A message for all of you annoying shitheads: The Wi-Fi password is gbytdept. No spaces or caps. AND” She yelled, voice getting even louder, “NO, YOU CANNOT TEXT OR CALL ANYONE UNLESS THEY ARE ALSO IN THE SAME DEPARTMENT SO STOP ASKING!” Even the click of the call ending seemed aggressive.
“Well,” Jennifer said after a beat of awkward silence, “At least we know what problems Booth Lady has to deal with.” The intercom clicked on one more time.
“MY NAME IS ELINE STOP CALLING ME BOOTH LADY. YES I CAN HEAR YOU.”
“…Eline. John corrected.
“I have a question.” Soo Lin said. Sherlock said nothing but stared her down.
“Did you ever catch my brother?” Sherlock shrugged.
“Don’t know a ton about your brother, but I did shut down the entire London branch, so…” Soo Lin smiled.
“Thanks for that,” she said at the same time John corrected that “WE shut down the entire London branch, you self-important idiot”. Sherlock’s only acknowledgement of John’s correction was a kiss to the top of his head and a muffled ‘Sorry’. Something small ran into the both of them. Sherlock let out a short ‘oof’ and stumbled into John, who caught him. The boy jumped off Sherlock’s legs and jumped into his arms.
“Daddy!” the boy shouted. He had red, curly hair and hazel eyes. Freckles dotted across his nose and dimples showed when he smiled. He was holding a wooden sword. Sherlock seemed to choke at the sight of him.
“R-Red?” The boy, Red, seemed positively elated at being recognized.
“Daddy!” John was stunned.
“You have a son?”
“John, meet Red. Red, This is my boyfriend John,” Red pointed at John, looking perplexed for a minute before breaking out in a wide smile and hugging John across the legs.
“Papa!” He said, pointing at John.
“Papa!” He giggled, hugging John’s legs again. John had one more question.
“You named your son Red?” Sherlock shrugged
“Well, originally I wanted to name him Redbeard, but Mycroft did object.” John sighed. Of course
“Yeah, I can see why.”
“Uncie Mycoff!” Red smiled again at the thought of Mycroft.
“How— and why, for that matter— did you have a son?” John asked, he couldn’t wrap his head around the fact. Red squirmed from his place in Sherlock’s arms.
“Papa,” he whined. Sherlock put Red in John’s arms. Red leaned his head against John’s.
“Good Papa,” he said, burying his face in John’s jumper.
“Well,” Sherlock said, “At least he likes you.” “And” he added, “To answer your questions, I adopted him from a child trafficking ring I dissolved in one of my first cases. He was four then, and he didn’t have a name.”
“And how did he… you know…” John was hesitant to say the word die, but judging be the look on Sherlock’s face, he understood what John was asking.
“The same ring I rescued him from… one of their workers… they found out here he was and they… He was six.” He couldn’t finish a sentence, but John knew. He wiped Sherlock’s tears. Red interrupted them with a “Uncie Mycoff!” and a point over John’s shoulder. There, a figure in a bespoke suit stood, observing the interaction with his usual hard look, although John thought he saw a glimmer of what Mycroft would consider sentiment.
“Mycie?” Sherlock whispered, before running into Mycroft’s arms and throwing him off balance. He wrapped his arms around him.
“Hello, brother-mine,” if either of them were crying, no one mentioned it. John knew it was hard for Sherlock when they got the news that Mycroft has gotten shot in the chest fifteen times. His first ‘legwork’ case in 25 years. After all was said and done, Sherlock finally stepping away from Mycroft and both of them held one of Red’s chubby hands (the sword tucked away in his belt), someone made an announcement. John wasn’t sure who. It could have been himself.
“So. Who’s ready to drag Moriarty down to hell?”
Gone Before Your Time
Summary: AU where Sherlock dies when he jumps and John commits suicide. They both end up in the Gone Before Your Time Department, where people who die before their scheduled death end up. They meet each other there and have to make a plan to make sure that Moriarty, who is also in the Department, goes to hell (quite literally). But it’s not as straightforward as anyone would like. There are lies, plans within plans, and people from the past that Sherlock and John would both rather forget. There will be ten chapters and an epilogue. Tags will be added as the story progresses. Please leave a comment! (Major Character Death is for first chapter only)

Oh my god, Soo Lin was kind of a mirror for Sherlock and revealed that the man trying to kill her was her brother in a very similar way to how Sherlock revealed Mycroft as his brother, and Soo Lin explains that he was being controlled and used as a puppet by someone else.
Hi Nonny!
Ahhhh yup! Another reason why I think that Mycroft is under either Mary or Moriarty’s thumb. [This Post Here as Well] (I’ve a lot more, but those two sum up my thoughts on Mycroft-Mary-Moriarty).
Something I’ve just thought of, but probably read somewhere else: Soo Lin’s brother is “The Spider”; Moriarty is compared to a Spider. What if it’s MARY who’s pulling all the strings (as I have long suspected)?
Either way, Mycroft is being puppeted, I think. It’s just a matter of “who is pulling the strings?”.
