I really hate when i hear type of comment like:
Manic is just green Sonic he dosen't have enny personnality except being a theif.
This is absolutly false but i don't blame some peoples to think this. After he is the more calm of the groupe.
For exemple in Mobodoom he said that he always feeling lost (probably lonely) and try to find his own place in the world tha't why he wanted to say in the first place. But in the end he realize that his place is with Sonia and Sonic.
Despite all that dit dosen't stop him to have some difficulty to found his own place between his siblings. The thing with Manic is he is more sensitive that more of the fandom give him crédit for. When something is wrong he keep all of his fellings for himself (probably because he don't wanna bother the other) but if you asked him and take the time to be pacient , pay attention to him and he's feellings , he will talk for sure.
But it will never happen because since the beginning of the show Sonic and Sonia (specialy Sonic) never really took the time to understand him. They always critisise him and his kleptomania (which is by the way a mental healt). And the only thing he have to say is stop being like this.
But Sonic and Sonia dosen't seen to notice his incecurity. Overall as a character i would say Manic is the most miss understood of the three.
hi lediz!! I thought it was really cool that you commented on each episode of Sonic Underground, I think it's very rare for someone to talk about the cartoon itself, especially about each episode, that's really cool!
I wanted to talk to you about a specific episode, episode 16, you know? which has the biggest focus on Manic, I really wanted to talk to someone about Manic in this episode, and I think you're the best person for me to tell.
I'm aware that I may have an interpretation that goes much further than Manic having to learn to work as a team and also learning to be stronger mentally, but I wanted to talk about one more detail about Manic that I'm possibly exaggerating lol but I think it is interesting.
It is not new that there is a list of characters who felt (or still feel) inferior to Sonic, who felt the need to prove that they are better than Sonic, be it doing an action(which is usually a stupid action that ends up harming the character in the end) to prove that he is braver than Sonic, or steal something from Sonic to experience what it's like to be him, yes, I'm including Manic in this list.
At the beginning of the episode, we can see that at first Manic says good things about Sonic, such as that he is incredible, sensational, the best brother he could have, but as the episode progresses, a transition happens where Manic changes this thought, first, he started comparing himself to Sonic and soon started wanting to prove that he is better than Sonic.
At the end of the episode where everything ends well, Sonic questioned Manic about what made him do that, but Manic avoided the question by making a little joke, and that was it.
envy can begin through a feeling of admiration that turns into resentment. In most cases, when someone initially admires the person for their abilities and achievements, this can over time turn into envy. This process can happen due to several factors such as: constant comparison, feeling of inadequacy, personal frustration or a perception that you will never reach the same level of success.
Well, Manic fit into all or almost all
Anyone who has followed the series knows that Manic has a bit of a history of believing that he is not capable and that he is not as incredible as his brothers, and especially believing that he is an embarrassment to his mother.
My conclusion is that he sometimes feels jealous of his brother, I think this is an interesting part of Manic plot, which in my opinion could make a great episode about it, Manic, as I said before, didn't answer Sonic question, he deviated from the subject, which is not the healthiest decision of all, admitting about the envy he feels would be the best choice, and this opened doors for the producers to make more episodes about it, which unfortunately the cartoon producers only took advantage of very few times.
Well, I don't know if you're going to read this, it's quite long, but I'm happy to share an observation I made about Manic. Have a good day!
Are you kidding? I read everything people send me, I love knowing I help people think about characters and stories, and I know exactly what you mean about needing to talk to someone about them.
And to your point!
Yes. I agree wholeheartedly.
Manic is kind of key to what I sometimes find frustrating about Sonic Underground, in that he had so much potential as a character. As the heart of the Sonic Underground, as the "voice of the people", his whole thing SHOULD have been around emotion and emotional responses.
I also think it could have been a great way to evolve Sonic's character, too, in a much better way than having him go "oh, wow, I've been so arrogant I should be a better person" to "oh, wow, I should pay more attention to how other people are feeling." But Sonic is a discussion for another day.
For anyone else reading, episode 16 is Bug!, which is the one where Manic goes off on his own and gets brainwashed to turn spy. And as anon says, it could have been a really important episode in an arc Manic never really got to have.
Every so often, we get these glimpses of Manic as someone who struggles internally. These days we'd say it was a mental health, maybe even a kind of depression, but even back in the day, it was clear that he was insecure, and he can't always find the motivation to do the things he needs to, and yet, he also externalises his issues. Whatever goes wrong, it's never HIS FAULT. Even when he screws up, he just brushes it off, or gets mad at Sonic, or blames Robotnik, or the situation. It gives the impression of someone saying "I was never gonna be good enough; you just set me up to fail".
Of all the triplets, Manic is the one who comes closest to admitting he shouldn't have to be doing what he is. He constantly feels like he's making sacrifices, like he has to change who he is, like he doesn't get a choice or an opinion or anything. And the narrative keeps supporting this, because Manic is the only one who NEEDS his medallion to fight, and even when he is using it, he is intensely vulnerable - the drums don't move once they're out, so he's always stuck in place. And even outside that, Manic is ALWAYS getting caught, he's ALWAYS needing rescue. He is the perpetual victim.
Which makes him an even better representative of the People Of Mobius, who are also the victim in this war between Aleena and Robotnik, so METAPHOR YAY
It would be so easy to keep building on that and have it bubble up into resentment, as you say. And Manic's powerset is either insidious (thievery, hacking, stealth) or horrifically destructive (those drums are terrifying). Just like how negative emotions can get in when you're not looking, and cause immense pain when they explode.
Manic could and would have been able to really hit Sonic and Sonia where they hurt. And they both probably needed that lesson about being more careful with other people. But they never got it.
I do think, if the series was ever rebooted (HAH), Manic's storyline would be a--if not the--key arc to proving the Council of Four is worthy of leading their people. Because it would be that deep dive into WHY they should help people, WHY the people should fight back, and HOW people can deal with negative emotions in healthy, productive ways, instead of lashing out in pain and anger.
Oh, man, now I'm thinking about it, I can think of at least three episode bases that would have been good for this.
UGH. The possibilities!

i always forget that sonic underground came out at the very beginning of the modern era and not the later years of the classic era. sonic and knuckles having black eyes combined with sonic being voiced by jaleel white just makes my brain go "ah yes. a show from the classic era"
#it fucks me up sooo bad thinking about how sonic x came out only 4 years later#those are completely separate eras with a huge gap between them to me#my guess is that sonic underground and sonic adventure were being worked on around the same time#and the two teams werent really communicating with eachother#so the underground team didnt find out about the modern redesigns until it was too late to change it#or they just didnt care about consistency. who knows

Dc x Dp Prompt #4: Ghost Selkie
Disclaimer: references and facts about Selkies are based on Selkie folklore, true facts about seals, and stuff I just made up because it works well with the story
~~~~
Okay so Urban Fantasy inspired au where turns out there is some Selkie blood mixed up somewhere in the Fenton bloodline. As such Jazz and Danny exhibit a few Selkie-like traits but nothing too serious: a playful nature, a certain grace and agility, attraction to shiny things (stars and microscopes), a decent singing voice, being strong swimmers, and seeing in the dark better than the average person. After The Accident™️ and being more involved with the super natural world some of those aspects get a bit stronger for Danny but he just chalks it up to being a Halfa. That is until Skulker catches him on an off-day and manages to capture him by snagging the back of his jumpsuit. Phantom, in a moment of panic and desperation, decides to try and rip off his bodysuit to escape. The suit comes of alright but out tumbles Danny Fenton rather than a de-clothed Phantom. Skulker, in a moment of shock, drops the suit and Danny catches cradling it to his chest while every fiber of his being screams “MY COAT. MY PELT. MINE, DONT STEAL IT.” Skulked realizes what’s happened before Danny does and nopes out of there bc “ This is not what I meant when a said I would have your pelt whelp!” Danny is left sitting there feeling stunned. A quick round of experimentation leads him to figure out that he is now able to take off the suit in Phantom form, but it will de-transform him into Danny. Furthermore, the regular "going ghost" transition still works both with and without him physically holding the suit.
A quick consultation with Clockwork and Frostbite reveals the Fenton Selkie heritage and he goes back to report to Jazz and his friends. Due to Jazz’s instance the siblings get a crash course in Selkies through a community of Selkies and Part-Selkies in the Infinite Realms as well as having a younger ghost show them where to find the modern underground Selkie-Community. Which leads to them getting emotionally adopted by their (dead and alive) Selkie mentors. They learn about eating habits, behavior, culture and customs (including the in and outs of courtship and mating), and camflouge/blending into society.
Jazz learns to tap into her vocal magic/manipulation. Her voice has a deeply calming effect on others and they feel more compelled to listen to her. This comes in handy with some of her more rowdy patients at her internships and stuff. She’s also to taps into the physical aspects of her Selkie blood and gains enhanced dexterity, agility, balance and reflexes. She’s also working towards improving her strength and stamina. Needless to say her aim has definitely improved. Nothing too wild but as she gains more liminality, those aspects become stronger so she’s definitely a cut above the average human though not as crazy as Danny.
Danny on the other hand gets the ability to “shed his pelt” by being able to physically take of his suit and de-transform as well as how to disguise the suit as a jacket or something (maybe a romper or a cardigan?) so that he he can keep it on him for quick, more discreet transformations if he wants to. His ghostly form takes on more Selkie traits like fangs for a powerful bite and more muscle mass and fat in certain areas to improve his endurance and cold resistance. He also learns to manipulate his ectoplasm to be able to shapeshift into the seal version of a Selkie. He is able to practice and manipulate his Ghostly Wail and hone it into a Siren Song and Sonic Singing too.
So basically both the Fenton siblings get cool Selkie power-ups (and unbeknownst to the two, admittedly already quite attractive siblings, their looks take on an otherworldly allure too). As well as a new community eager to take them in and provide them with support. That's why when Danny decides he wants to get away from Amity for college (the ghosts have agreed to a truce as long as Danny pops in for a spar and some shenanigans every now and then. He acquiesces because playing and roughhousing is a part of building social relations for both ghosts and selkies) some of their Selkie contacts help him apply for the Wayne Scholarship at Gotham University and get him set up in Gotham.
Let’s switch gears for a moment here. Gotham has always been a weird place full of weirdos, magic, and cursed energy. Basically, overall chaotic, edgy, and somewhat rancid vibes. It also is entwined with the supernatural. Lady Gotham, the spirit of the city, has allowed many a supernatural community to remain well hidden in her realm including but not limited to fae, witches, gargoyles, vampires, and of course, selkies. There is a huge underground supernatural community in Gotham, part of which is the Selkie community. Most of the Selkies moved out of the harbor and onto land due to pollution. The luckier ones who managed to gain some quick wealth settled in the Upper East Side or Coventry while others ended up in Burnley, the Bowery, and Crime Alley. However, family is very important to Selkies, so there is little resentment between the areas. They try to help out each other and the other members of the supernatural community in Gotham whenever possible. The overall magical community is spread out over Gotham with a few hot spots like Old Gotham, Robinson Park, Crime Alley and the Bowery, and Chinatown.
Now enter: Jason Todd (or a different member of the batfam of your choosing but you’re on your own to figure out how that’ll change the story). Jason grew up around a large portion of Gotham’s supernatural community. There were plenty of fae, selkies, sirens, vamps, and various other magical beings within Crime Alley. He discovered the community early on when he found out that the abuela who used to feed him tamales was in fact a Bruja (witch). Her name was Señora Mariana Soliña and she swore him to secrecy and taught him some basic knowledge on how to recognize and avoid being screwed over by the supernatural.
When his mother died Señora Soliña revealed her surprisingly large amount of wealth to him. She chose to live in Crime Alley to be closer to magical friends and people who would seek out her services as a witch doctor (her cover bc the best lies have a hint of truth). She offered him a hot meal and some spare cash when she could but they weren’t able to run into each other as often as they liked. After getting adopted and becoming Robin Jason made periodic visits to her before his death.
Jason’s resurrection didn’t happen in a Lazarus pit but when he crawled out of his grave. It was due to the magical energy(read also high ecto-concentration) in Gotham he had been exposed to that he became a Revenant. He was able to develop a core through the latent energy and become a spirit/reanimated corpse that sought to avenge both his death and countless others at the hands of The Joker. His dip in the Pits (polluted ectoplasm) brought him out of his catatonic state but triggered his obsession and left him with Pit Rage. Yada yada yada, trains with the League of Assassins, yada yada yada, trains with All-Caste and gets the ability to wield the magical All-Blades, yada yada yada, returns to Gotham for revenge becomes a crime lord, etc., etc., you know the drill.
Fast forward to when he’s made up with the BatFam and is now an antihero. His pit rage has gotten more controllable as the natural ectoplasm and magic in Gotham is slowly filtering out the polluted ectoplasm in his system but it’s still a long process. The supernatural community, however, is happy to have him there. You see Red Hood is actually quite a popular vigilante within the supernatural community. Among his many monikers, they were the ones who gave him the nickname “Avenger of the Unavenged”, and nod to his nature as a Revenant, as well as the aura of the All-Blades (which are meant to defeat absolute evil) that most magical beings recognize.
Jason is fully aware of the presence of the supernatural community in Gotham, as well as members of it who live within his haunt. Once things reach a new “normal” for him he tracks down Señora Soliña only somewhat surprised to see her alive and kicking. He asks for her guidance in the supernatural past the basic knowledge she gave him as a kid. Señora Soliña recognizes his magical aura and status as a Revenant and agrees. (Note: Jason is aware that he has some magic in him, but he attributes it to the All-Blades. He is not fully aware of his status as a Revenant. Señora Soliña assumes he knows and thus does not inform him.) She teaches him and helps him start getting integrated into Gotham’s supernatural community. She offers to “adopt” him as her grandson "Jason “Pedro” Todd Soliña" so that he can take on a civilian identity and attend college. He agrees, eager to resume his education and take on a semi-"normal" life.
And thus we've reached the part of our story where two worlds collide. Jason and Danny first meet peripherally during orientation at Gotham U. They don't really have a direct interaction, just learning each other's names during the icebreakers and some eye contact during the tour. Danny is dorming and Jason commutes so the don't see each other much past running into each other on campus or in the dining hall. That is until they spot each other at an underground, supernatural beings-only, cafe called Xenia a few blocks away Robinson Park.
The two realize the other must have a supernatural connection and start up a conversation. The conversation is illuminating as they learn they're both fairly new to the supernatural community and mostly ghostly. Danny reveals himself as a halfa and of selkie descent and Jason uses his cover to introduce himself as the grandson of a bruja with magic, a brujo-in-training if you will. Upon being asked what a halfa is Danny realizes Jason doesn't know a ton about ghost culture and gives him a quick crash course leading them both to figure out that a) Jason is a Revenant and b) Danny could probably help the Pit Rage by giving him some ecto-supplements. Due to this newfound information Jason conveniently forgets that his new friend mentioned having Selkie blood.
The two meet up more after that, intentionally this time so that Danny can continue teaching Jason about ghost culture and just to hang out. (Note: Danny isn't teaching Jason about selkie culture as he assumes the grandson of a bruja would know that stuff already. Jason has been taught a bit about selkies but they haven't thoroughly covered the topic of courtship yet). As they hang out and develop a friendship with each other the seeds of romance are planted.
One day after they wrapped up lunch at Xenia, Danny left the cafe, accidentally leaving his pelt/jacket on his chair as he's still getting used to having to keep track of it. Jason not realizing the significance of his actions picks it up and takes it with him. Later that day Danny freaks out realizing he left it behind when he runs into Jason. Jason was actually looking for him to return the jacket. So he's like "Hey man you left this at the cafe so I took it and now you can have it back" assuming the redness on Danny's face is just embarrassment. Danny, while mortified, is also extremely flustered. Selkies typically only let close family and lovers have access to their pelts because it implies a deep and intimate bond built on trust that they'll give it back. For Jason, who should know about such Selkie customs, to not only take his pelt but then also return it so easily is some very straightforward flirting. But hey, Jason is good friend... and easy on the eyes too. He wouldn't mind if there was something more there. So Danny decides that he wouldn't mind courting/being courted by Jason.
Jason on the other hand has in fact caught feelings for his friend but hasn't realized he already initiated courting by doing this. He plans to do it the ghostly way engaging in some bonding through sparing and roughhousing and building up their feelings before asking him out. Unfortunately for him, there is a lot of overlap between Selkie courting and ghostly courting so Danny believes that Jason has been courting him for some time now. There are also some things that are specific to Selkie courting Jason unknowingly does, such as buying Danny a bracelet (shiny rocks as a courting gift), beating up a couple of guys trying to mug Danny (defending/showing off for your mate), and introducing Danny to his family/agreeing to meet Jazz (family is very important to Selkies).
That's why when they go out to dinner, and Jason embarrassedly corrects a waitress who thought they were on a date by saying "Oh we're just friends", Danny is understandably upset. He was under the impression that their courtship was getting rather serious since Jason had met Jazz and Danny had met Jason's family. When he asks Jason why he told the waitress they weren't dating he replies "Umm because we're not?" in an uncertain tone. Danny feeling hurt and upset takes his glass of water splashes it onto Jason's face and storms out of the restaurant. Jason is left there soaking, confused, and wondering what he did wrong.
That night Jason goes to visit Señora Soliña to see if he messed up some ghostly custom for Danny to get so upset. When he arrives one of the first things she asks him is how it's going with Danny. When he recounts what happened at dinner and explains his confusion, the bruja takes a deep sigh before smacking him upside the head. Jason is like “wtf abuela?!” And she just shakes her head at him and calls him an idiot. She then reminds him that Danny is part Selkie and explains all the ways Jason has been courting him during the past few months. Jason, realizing he screwed up grabs one of his leather jackets and goes off to track down Danny.
Danny has returned to his dorm to cry and eat ice cream in his pjs from the comfort of his own room. He’s about to watch some comfort tv when there is a pounding at his door. He gets to find a disheveled looking Jason standing at his door. Danny frowns and questions what he’s doing here. Jason’s like “Look I know you’re upset and understandably so but please let me in and I can explain”. Danny’s care for Jason wins out over his anger as he resigns himself to letting the other in. The first thing Jason does is apologize for hurting Danny, saying it was never his intention to do so. He then goes on to explain how he hadn't realized that he had been courting Danny in Selkie customs. Danny is understanding but still upset and voices his feelings to Jason. Jason allows the other to get his anger out and then continues to say that he was actually trying to court Danny through ghostly bonding, and he would still like to date him if he’s open to it. Jason then takes off the leather jacket that he brought with him and offers it to Danny, saying that he doesn’t have his own pelt to offer, but this is the next best thing. This gesture nearly brings Danny to tears and he throws himself to hug Jason, accepting the jacket. The pull back and look into each other's eyes before sharing a kiss and spending the rest of the night cuddling before Jason has to leave.
From then on Jason ramps up the courting to 12, determined not to mess it up again. He reasearches selkie and ghost courting customs in depth to properly woo Danny and personalizes dates to their personalities. Danny is happy to be lavished with the attention and returns the favor. The two of them also make an effort to make sure the have clear communication to avoid having misunderstandings again. A few months later Jason decides to re-introduce Danny to the batfam as his partner and brings Danny along to Wayne Family Dinner with a ring around his finger. It’s a promise ring not engagement ring, but what Bruce doesn’t know will surely give him a heart attack and Danny is happy to go along with it. Danny and Jason become the longest and most stable relationship in the batfam. Tim and Damian even come to them for advice when they try to romance their own partners.
The story kind of just finishes off with the two of them being happy with each other and leaves an open ending to add in small scenes that happened during a time skip or after the story (e.g gushing to siblings, an actual proposal, identity reaveals, batboys seeking advice, them engaging in pda, interaction with other supernatural beings, gossip surrounding their relationship, ect.)
The Sonic 3 Trailer lacks of both spoiler and context, and that is about how a trailer should be. We already know what it is about. We only needed to see few scenes to make sure it might look good (or bad, it depends on what we except).
Now, I've seen a couple of crazy theories I've read and I believe both of them won't happen. I'll explain
Tom getting killed
Won't happens anything different to Tom that didn't happen before. he will be at worst knock out/neutralized and go off screen. Like in Sonic 1 (punched by Eggman) and Sonic 2 (encircled by flames)
Such happening would be the complete Shadow's assasination as character. We as fan won't forgive him and also this would push Shadow in the villains realm.
The past characterization.
Original Shadow (Adventure/Heroes/06) was very tame. There is a video on YT that analyze how Shadow behaves toward the world and underline the lack of destruction and violence in SA2, as opposite as we see in Sonic X and ShtH05.
in Sonic-X they changed slightly Shadow's personality, removing his intellectual and contemplative nature and replacing it with a more brash and violent personality. But even there, they prevented Shadow from killing Cosmo, making him acting like a cat who plays with his prey instead of being efficient (slow pace, talking, missing aim despite the short distance and when the thing failed just giving up on that). Shadow could have act smartly simply killing Cosmo in her sleep. As I say, I think they wanted to save his reputation.
In Sonic Force he indeed killed Infinite's squad. His first kill, most likely. Small fries, while leaving the boss alive, evil and stupid considering the aftermath. They saved Shadow's reputation by making Infinite lame and obnoxious and by not showing his gang at all (so we don't get attachted and we still cheer for Shadow). Sort of telling without actually showing anything.
Similar cases and why those characters have been tamed out.
Lupin III had a super rough star. His author got inspired by underground Western comics of the '60s and the original Lupin III was not a thief and a cheerful anti-hero. Lupin was originally a real godfather, a mafia boss, and despite he was mostly accompanied by Jigen and Goemon (who weren't really characterized back then) he had all underdogs, picciottos and so on under his rule. He did steal, but also he killed innocents, he raped women (includin Fujiko) and did several other hideous things.
Evil protagonists don't last long. They either get overhauled or they die like Light Yagami.
For this Lupin had to be tamed. Lupin killed less and less and more and more only with a reason and was more and more gentle with the innocents, including his main foe. And lastly he just virtually stopped to kill.
He's not the only one, many protagonists were born as unremedable villain and then they have been turned into antiheroes... or even heroes. Villanous protagonists never last long.
Shadow is beloved mostly because of his original personality. I noticed in most fan work, he is characterized the way he was in Sonic Adventure 2/Heroes/06 or Prime. Sometimes like in Sonic X and Shadow 05. Rarely like modern Shadow.
Back to Shadow
"What did you do?"
"What I had to!"
Those lines may be related to anything and everything. They might be related to Shadow's attempt to destroy the world like in SA2.
"I had to keep my promise!"
"What I had to do" suggest me something Shadow did not because he wanted to but for an external obiective. It might be world safety, keeping a promise, preventing the Sun going red giant, anything. Maybe even destroying Metal Sonic (if he appears like some rumor suggest) after Sonic convinced him to join the good side. Shadow has a long story dealing with living weapons.
Shadow stealing Stone's bike
Simply impossible. I already said Shadow's size is comparable to the size of a five years old child, about 1m tall. Stone is a 1,78m tall adult.
How Shadow would look on Stone's bike. It would be good material for the memes. And even if he would be able to ride an adult designed bike, he would be unable to do the Akira thing.
ok but legit a meetup of all the universe sonics would be hellish. they'd immediately start racing and fighting each other. they'd tackle boom to find out how he got so tall. adventures would be painting the wall to look like a tunnel and making scourge run into it. everyone would be trying to kill underground. modern idw and prime being the same universe is vague and debated so modern just keeps intermediately splitting into three like shadow clone jutsu. X keeps sitting on people's heads. preboot archie is crying about his dead son or whatever. zonic is standing on the wall. blaze the cat is there. hell on earth
Sonic Underground VA Headcanons
This is just a list of voice actors that I've heard in multiple series/roles that, if Sonic Underground were ever remade as an anime, I'd love to hear voicing the old cast.
Sonia - Cherami Leigh voice of: Lucy Heartfilia, Asuna Yuuki, and Michiru (Fairy Tail, Sword Art Online, BNA: Brand New Animal)
Sonic - Jason Grifith voice of Sonic and Shadow, Cheren (Sonic X and several games, Pokemon Black&White promotional animation of Rosa vs Cheren)
Manic - Greg Cipes voice of Beast Boy (Teen Titans and Teen Titans Go)
Aleena - Colleen Clinkenbeard voice of Erza Scarlet and Momo Yaoyorozu (Fairy Tail and My Hero Academia)
Uncle Chuck - R. Bruce Elliot (I know he passed away, but I think he would've done an amazing job as Uncle Chuck) voice of Master Makarov and the Platinum Dragon Lord (Fairy Tail and Overlord)
That's honestly all I've though up so far. I think if Greg Cipes pitched his voice lower than what he did for Beast Boy he'd sound fairly similar to how Manic originally did. The VAs I listed for Aleena and Uncle Chuck I just came up with on the spot as I was typing these out, but the VAs I thought up for the triplets I'd thought up weeks ago.
I dunno man, there's just something really fun about taking a character from an old series and trying to find a Voice Actor who could suit that role for a modern setting.
The Start of the Post-Modern Sonic Era
As time passes... Sonic Frontiers feels unreal to me. I still feel the psychic ripples that game made in the minds of thousands. Hearing about the physics nonstop. the buzzwords echoed in my brain for months... the rips at the English script-writing. It drove me to near madness. It was hard talking to people who weren't as deep in it as I was at that time... But I look back these days and I can't help but feel like the madness was exactly what I wanted. I can't make peace with this game like many others have, but I can't hate this game, I can't act like I'm indifferent to it. It did something to me that I can't dissect into a science. I don't feel like it's fair to try and categorize the feelings I have about it's writing into the set of ideals I've made for what I want these characters to be. I can't rule this one out... it broke the stagnant mold for me. An "Open-Zone" Sonic game with hyper-realistic environments, patch-worked with floating platforms and rails in the sky, janky camera movements and overtly flashy attacks for an unbalanced combat system, reused level design for one minute stages, hamfisted self-referential dialogue that had me groaning at points, a narrative that felt spread thin and disjointed, answering questions that didn't need answering. And it didn't even have Momentum. And yet... it is everything to me. AND NOW FOR THE CHILDHOOD HISTORY OF BLINGUS For the 20 years I've been alive, about 18 of those years I have spent with this deeply rooted attachment to Sonic. I was deeply fortunate as my cousin and my half-brother both had a Genesis with each of their own collection of games respectively, which of course, meant a lot of Sonic games. I was also gifted with having two brothers, who I dubbed as "the one with the GameCube" and "the one with the PS2". From age 2 (2006) to age 6 (2010), I had already created formative memories with the following: Sonic 1 Sonic 2 Sonic Underground Sonic 3D Blast Sonic Rush Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood Sonic Spinball Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine Sonic Heroes Sonic CD Sonic Adventure DX Sonic X Shadow The Hedgehog Sonic Rush Adventure Sonic Riders Sonic Unleashed Sonic Colors
These aren't even counting the games and shows I had learnt of online as a child who ABSOLUTELY shouldn't of been on the internet at such a young age but I digress. I just want to highlight the sheer amount of Sonic I took in in that time-frame. I think this chapter in my life planted the ideals that I hold to this very day, even throughout the madness. The problem is that... I don't even truly know what those ideals are. As I've grown I've played these games countless times, along with every game coming out after. I read the comics, I watched the shows, I got invested into the rom-hacking scene, and from there, the Fangame scene. My life changed and grew and my opinions of these games have shifted time and time and time again. Those roots never grew dry for me though, and I feel as if I owe my young self a lot for making memories with these games. Maybe it's a fear of losing innocence? It could be because I'm autistic as fuck? Maybe it's just love. Love for what these games represent for me, Love for what could've been. Loving it for what it is, what it was, loving it because people made it and that's all that matters. Loving to draw it, to find why others love it, and to open my mind to interpretation. Loving it to hate it, to write about it and talk to your friend's about it. To find out what made it tick, what's been lost over the years and how it's found again. Loving it because Super Sonic is raw as fuck and Shadow likes nu-metal hell yeah Oh yeah this was about Sonic Frontiers Well okay yeah the game is kinda mid but It's raw as hell and it's representation of growth and change is as prevalent in the narrative as it is in the eyes of the people. It made a ripple. Did Sonic Lost World make a ripple? Yes it did you fucking asshole
#blingus talks sonic#sonic frontiers#sth#i hope this shit makes sense LMAO#i fucking love you sonic#we're in the post modern era now
Sonadowtober 2024 Day 15
Day 15 was swords
This pic is pre-Sonadow & takes place when Venice is a baby possibly an one year old. At this point only those close with Sonic are aware that Venice is Sonic's son with Rouge, Knuckles(both having a baby daughter of their own), Big, Vanilla & Tails helping him with preparing to become a single parent.(Eggman caused Mephiles to disappear when Sonic first became pregnant & Sonic at some point was forced to accept he might be dead) Outsiders are made to believe he's started babysitting Venice with Vanilla helping him when needed.
Something led to Shadow ending up staying the night at Sonic's with Sonic finally feeling like they're close enough to admit Venice is his son & the father is possibly dead thanks to Eggman. Sonic decides to show Shadow a room he keeps items from past adventures as mementos so Shadow can see a replica sword of Caliburn who Sonic still thinks about. While Shadow already respected Sonic he feels even more respect for Sonic after this "sleepover" & can't help but feel like they're alike thanks to having lost many people that they were close with.
I kind of imagine Sonic has a wooden replica(maybe metal or some other material, he can still use it to fight but it's still used for display) he made of Caliburn, this was kind of inspired by a fic were Shadow was caring for Sonic while Sonic was sick & Sonic mistook him for Lancelot.(LINK) Sonic had a replica of Caliburn because after his adventures in Camelot it felt like something was missing without Caliburn.
There's a non-Sonadow fic called "Once a King, Always a King" were the knights due to Eggman end up in Sonic's time & go for him for help before searching for their swords who escaped so Eggman couldn't use them. In the fic Sonic is reunited with Caliburn but it's Caliburn from modern day & not from the knights' time which allows Sonic to keep his sword/friend instead of having to say goodbye when the knights return home. I was almost tempted to be inspired by that to let Sonic have Caliburn but then I realized like with Zonic & Scourge I wasn't sure what to do with him so he's not here.
Back on topic I imagine Sonic has a replica he built of Caliburn so he can in a way have him around in a sense. I imagine he likely has a dagger that can turn into a sword so he can use a sword again(with it also being portable since swords are tricky to carry around all the time) but it's not as detailed & this is going off topic. I also imagine Sonic has a room somewhere that he keeps some cherished mementos of past friends/adventures so he can keep the items safe which is why he doesn't wear Chip's collar as a bracelet after Sonic Unleashed. I don't have a design for the room so this looks a little lazy, I just wanted to show some of the items like the replica sword, Chip's collar/necklace & the seashell bracelet Amy made him in Sonic X.(I have the bracelet hanging but he likely put it in a more safe area later)
I'm also not sure if I mentioned this but I imagine Sonic and the Black Knight took place in the past with their history being changed over time & some things lost to time so people don't realize the Round Table was a group of mobians. I also imagine one of Sonic's adopted parents'(Sonic Underground) possessions that survived is a large painting of Lancelot with Coraline(my OC/alternate universe Sonic who is Lancelot's wife & Galahad's mom) in armor which was Sonic's favorite painting as a kid. He's likely taking it back to his memory room when he finds out about the location of his adopted parents' burnt down house were the cellar/bomb shelter is.
Addressing those who are reading Sonic Cyber Revolution (Sonic the Hedgehog AU Story)
While the cast of characters for my Sonic Cyber Revolution is quite large, I've managed to introduce most of the important Sonic characters, with several more coming up in future chapters. This left me wondering whether those who read my story want to see any specific characters that I haven't introduced or even mentioned yet, but fit under the conditions that I have set.
As a reminder, the current cast of characters looks like this (not counting the OCs):
Main Protagonists
Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles ''Tails'' Prower, Knuckles the Echidna, Amy Rose, Silver the Hedgehog, Shadow the Hedgehog
Main Antagonists
Dr. Ivo ''Eggman'' Robotnik, Metal Sonic, Dr. Starline, Mephiles the Dark
Supporting Cast
Big the Cat & Froggy, Rouge the Bat, Jet the Hawk, Wave the Swallow & Storm the Albatros (aka The Babylon Rogues), Blaze the Cat, Orbot & Cubot, Honey the Cat, Vector the Crocodile, Espio the Chameleon & Charmy Bee (aka Team Chaotix)
Upcoming Characters
E-123 Omega (aka Team Dark w/Shadow & Rouge), Cream the Rabbit, Cheese the Chao, Vanilla the Rabbit, Chocola the Chao, Marine the Raccoon, Surge the Tenrec, Kitsunami ''Kit'' the Fennec, Sage the A.I., Black Doom & the Black Arms, Eclipse the Darkling, Infinite the Jackal
I know well that there are way more characters in the Sonic Universe and I'm sure that you guys have some of your favorites that you would want to be featured in some way.
My conditions for character suggestions consists of:
*The character must have been featured in the mainline Sonic media, such as the video games, comics or cartoons. NO OCs!!!
*The Sonic media in question consists of the canon Sonic video games (meaning Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is out of the question as it is not canon), Sonic IDW comics, Sonic movies or the Sonic cartoons (specifically the Sonic OVA, Sonic X, Sonic Boom & Sonic Prime).
*The characters from the following Sonic media WON'T be accepted: Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic SatAM, Sonic Underground, Sonic the Comic, Sonic Archie comics.
*Yes, that means that the Freedom Fighters won't be featured in the story. No, I won't reconsider this decision. I'm sorry to those who got their hopes up.
*I do regret not adding Scourge the Hedgehog and Shard the Metal Sonic from the Sonic Archie comics, tho. As well as the evil Super Sonic from Sonic the Comic.
*But, isn't Eclipse the Darkling a Sonic Archie comics original character? Why is he going to appear and not the others?
*Eclipse the Darkling is the sole exception to this rule due to his nature as a member of the Black Arms, meaning that he will make his appearance when I adapt Shadow the Hedgehog (2005).
*Take note that this is a Sonic AU, meaning that the characters will have familiar, but very different backgrounds from their canon selves.
*Both Classic Era and Modern Era characters are free game, as noted by the appearance of Honey the Cat. The main cast, as listed above, appear as their Modern selves.
You can leave your suggestions below in the replies.
Ok I'm in a Sonic mood right now. So I'm gonna tell ya'll my thoughts on each of the Sonic shows in the order they came out. However, I haven't seen two of them, and will tell you why. Now let's begin!
The Adventures Of Sonic The Hedgehog
This show is hilarious. And honestly, the way it depicts Sonic and Tails' brotherly bond is not only heartwarming, it's held up in the games. And modern, goofy Eggman reminds me a lot of Dr. Robotnik from this show. So honestly, it's characterization of characters holds up pretty well. It's funny, charming, and at times surprisingly heartwarming. 8/10
Sonic The Hedgehog Saturday Morning Cartoon
I'ma be honest, I haven't seen this show, and I never will. Thank Toxic fans. Sonally shippers getting mad at Sonamy shippers like me. People telling you that all the other shows are inferior and you NEED to watch SatAM or your not a real Sonic Fan, etc. The fanbase is keeping me away, and I know I will not be able to enjoy it because of this. Toxic Fandom/10
Sonic Underground
This show... so back in the day, my parents bought DVDs of the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, The Adventures Of Super Mario Bros 3, and Super Mario World. On each of these, there were previews for other DiC cartoons. On all three were ads for Sonic Underground. And me and bro wanted that, so we rented some DVDs. And I LOVED it. First of all, yeah I know people think Tails was replaced by Sonia and Manic, but being honest, Sonic's dynamic with those two, while still a sibling dynamic, is not the same as his dynamic with Tails. And Tails could have been written in with the sibs adopting him as a younger brother. Sonia and Manic are also fun characters and I really like them. And even haters of this show have to admit the theme song is good, or at least the singer is having fun. I also like that, unlike the other 90s shows which were nature vs. Technology type things, Underground had this and some magic and Super natural elements. Honestly, concepts like this show up in the games, with ancient being sealed away like Chaos, Iblis, Dark Gaia etc. And of course the Storybook Series itself has stuff like this I have been working on a Sonic Underground Season 2 which would loosely adapt modern Sonic Stories and bring in characters from those games. I know the show is far from perfect, but this is my thoughts, not an objective review, which is why it's a 9/10 score. This is NOT objective!
Sonic X
I watched the show in Japanese with subs and I gotta say...why do people hate Chris? He's a kid, a fanboy, and I find his interactions with the cast adorable. The music in the show is also amazing, though I hear it's different in the dub. Also there are Sonamy moments which YEEEEESSSS. I also love how the show managed to pretty faithfully adapt the plots of some of the games. The Meterex Saga was something of a departure, but I still enjoyed it. 9/10
Sonic Boom
I was born in the 2000s. So I was in middle school when this show came out. And I was a Sonic fan. I had played Colors and I think I had gotten Secret Rings pretty recently, though I may have only had Colors. When I watched the first episode, I loved it. And then hated the rest of the show. Because the first episode has a pretty different tone from the rest of the show. I got over this as I got older and started rewatching the show, catching jokes that flew over my head. And while some episodes are like "why are you friends again?" Some, and most in season 2, show these guys are pretty good friends. The Shadow episodes are highlights for me. 7/10
Sonic Prime
I haven't seen this show because I don't have Netflix. I want to see it tho. Netflix is expensive/10
I did it. I finished Sonic Underground. It sure does exist.
Honestly I don't have any strong feelings towards this one. I like the characters, the overarching storyline, but the actual contents of the episodes are kinda forgettable (tbh that's not hard for me in general). There's nothing I'd hate rewatching, but also nothing making me want to rewatch.
I think the most offensive thing about this show are the songs. Aside from the opening being an absolute banger, the music is just...not good. Although am I nuts or did they do a We're not gonna take it reference in Bartleby the Prisoner? I mean it fits the vibe...
Anyways, it sucks the series never reached a proper conclusion, I actually would've been interested in seeing that.
Out of the old Sonic cartoons, I think this one strikes the best balance. AoSTH is super goofy while SatAM is painfully edgy, but Underground manages to do some comedy while still taking itself seriously. I like that in media. Plus, while it made its own characters, the show does a good job balancing it out and not making me question why it's named Sonic. coughcoughSATAM
Still, it's something I'd probably rate a 6/10. I kind of was getting into it at the beginning, but after I got about half way through the series I started getting tired. Felt like progress on the overarching storyline had stalled and it was just stopping Eggman's plan over and over again. I see why I got annoyed at how many episodes there were as a kid. Still manages to be better kids show than modern day PAW Patrol, though.
Anyways, this means the next show on my list is... THE SONIC OVA. ok I know it's not actually a show, but I've never seen the Japanese version and now I've got my hands on a translation, I wanna watch and see if it's different. It'll be a nice cap on this era of Sonic cartoons. Then I'll move onto Sonic X.
After seeing sonic prime I kinda want to rank the Knuckles' on how feral each of them are.
Gnarly or dread would definitely top the list
then maybe X?
after that i'm not sure which one.
Maybe movie next? He has mellowed out a bit now that he's with the Wachowkis
then modern, renegade or main prime universe.
then boom.
(I dont know enough to say about the comic knuckles' or underground Knuckles)'
