I have no attachment to Sally or the Freedom Fighters, but i do think you can do fun things with them. I redesigned them thinking "what if team sonic had a direct rival group in heroism". So pushing more of how different Sonic and Sally are along with each of their friends.

Another take on Knux as I continue to figure out my style for drawing Sanics. This level of rendering is not a thing I’d do for these guys very often bc I kind of feel like simpler/less textured is better for these exaggerated proportions but I was having fun. I think he’s a big improvement from my last Knuckles :)

reading this old sonic children’s book i got off mercari and. the whole plot so far is that the freedom fighters are going to rescue bunnie who’s been captured by robotnik. which is simple enough

until tails wants to go with and ofc he’s given the “you’re too young” speech by sonic. obviously if you know satam you know this is pretty much the standard in most episodes.

but the funny part in this book is that FUCKING MUTTSKI GETS TO GO ALONG. AND NOT TAILS?!?! LIKE HE CAN’T EVEN TALK. THIS IS SOME BS. HE COULD’VE STAYED BACK WITH TAILS AND UNCLE CHUCK AND BEEN SAFE BUT NOOOO. BRO THINK HE ON THE TEAM 😐

The Loop - Sonic the Hedgehog (Pre-SGW Archie)

This was a concept I had in my mind for a while. Basically, after re-reading Worlds Collide, which made it clear that the Pre-Reboot Sonic Archie Multiverse was completely erased, I had begun thinking about the implications of what that meant for all the characters that didn’t make it into Post-Reboot Multiverse. Clearly, they ceased to exist, but what if they didn’t? What if Pre-SGW Mobius didn’t get destroyed. Instead, it still exists, but anything related to the Sonic characters and lore from the video games has been erased from existence.

Note, this concept idea has been designed as a psychological (well, existential) horror story and the characters (mainly the Freedom Fighters) aren’t exactly the protagonists, albeit for good reasons. If you dislike the very idea of having the Freedom Fighters act like the antagonists or simply OOC, please, DO NOT continue reading. You’ll hate me for putting this idea in your heads. 

I warned you.

If you don’t care, then go ahead. This is me just experimenting with something I usually wouldn’t touch, so aside from the horror aspect, I’m not in my element here either.

To start off, Worlds Collide happens, but instead of being destroyed, the Pre-SGW Universe somehow survives. However, all of the video game characters (Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, etc.) and items (the Chaos Emeralds, the Master Emerald, etc.) are literally gone, as if Thanos Snapped.

To answer the question in the back of your mind, yes, Worlds Collide happens as it happened in canon, meaning Sonic and co. basically moved to a new Mobius, unaware that the old Mobius still exists... somehow. The Freedom Fighters in Post-SGW Mobius are just new iterations of their Pre-SGW selves, not the same characters as in canon.

Anyways, back to Pre-SGW Mobius. After the events of Worlds Collide, for some reason, time has reset to the point of just before Sally became Mecha Sally. She, and everyone else, have actually visions of the future, being fully aware of all the events that happened between the first Super Genesis Wave and the second Super Genesis Wave (the latter leading to Worlds Collide). They have no clue how time reversed, but hey, Sally’s not a robot, Antoine is still alive, Bunnie is still half-cyborg (something she tried to become again just by the end of the Pre-Reboot continuity) and Julie-Su hadn’t been chucked into the void by Thrash. They know that these future events are supposed to happen, even though many other characters and items are missing.

This is where the psychological/existential horror begins and the concept gets more unhinged.

The Freedom Fighters try to find a way to explain what is going on and are at the same time dreading the future events. However, as time passes, everything that is supposed to happen up to Worlds Collide happens in such way as if you took the comic, but you see only blank spaces where the video game characters are supposed to be. For example, Sally still feels the urge to go on the mission to defeat Eggman (which led to her becoming Mecha Sally), but not only is there no Eggman to defeat, she doesn't get roboticized, yet is forced to just follow the already scripted actions. Another example would be Julie-Su. She knows Thrash will come after her and tries to prevent that from happening, but it still happens.

And when the events finally reach the point of Worlds Collide, the characters wake up and find themselves at the beginning of the First Genesis Wave. There was a time loop, but they still remember the events of the original timeline and first time loop. However, this time, the loop plays out the same as the first one, despite everyone's attempts to change it. And when they reach again the point of Worlds Collide, the time loop resets again. And this happens over and over and over and over again, with no explanation to why.

To use video game analogy, it is as if playing a video game from a certain save point up to the climax of a story, only for the video game to glitch out and you have to restart it from the save point. And it goes on and on for... how many real world years have passed since Worlds Collide? Imagine every real life month is one more time loop.

So, the characters are starting to get desperate. At some point, they realize that their world is literally broken and nothing they do can bring them out of the time loop. Their story literally cannot continue because it was cut off. An ending for Pre-SGW doesn't exist, which is why the time loop happens. The world literally cannot continue, so it resets.

Not only that, but with every reset, more and more people start forgetting about the video game characters, until it's just the Freedom Fighters and maybe some other characters (like Naugus, Geoffrey, Harvey Who, Elias, Scourge, Chuck) who still remember Sonic and co. The Freedom Fighters literally have to force themselves to remember, figuring that maybe they need the video game characters to return for the time loop to finally break. They become desperate to figure out a way to find them, but there isn't anything they can do. There are no Chaos Emeralds/Master Emerald to give them an edge either.

Eventually, they reach their breaking point, where they just accept that they cannot change the world, having lost their mind from all the time loops.

Now, I could end it here, if I wanted, but knowing myself, I prefer to go all out on a story idea, using it to its full potential.

So, all of the Freedom Fighters are basically at their lowest point. Their mind is broken due to the constant time loops and they can do nothing about it since there is no way to prevent them from happening. But, at the start of another loop, something is different. Someone appears who hasn't been there for ages.

To set the scene, imagine Sally preparing for again for the attack on the non-existent Eggman, when by pure chance, she spots Sonic and Shadow, with Shadow lecturing Sonic on endangering the world with his reckless actions and a flustered, but laid-back Sonic promising to save the world.

Imagine how elated Sally would be, running straight into Sonic and hugging him (not noticing how uncomfortable he is) and crying how much she missed him and how she thought she'd forget about him. But when she looks at him, he's confused and trying to escape her death grip. "Uh, who are you?"

Sally argues how she's his girlfriend, and Sonic (and Shadow) are confused, because no, she's not. They don't know who she is nor have never met her in their life. Sally is obviously baffled, wondering how that is possible and they must be tricking her, until they explain how another Paradox Prism-type of situation happened, concluding this must be a different universe and now they must find the shiny gem to get home (to note, Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Rouge and Silver got also roped in but landed in different locations).

Basically, the Video Game/Sonic IDW/Sonic Prime characters ended up in the Archie!Universe due to a shiny gem (doesn't have to be the Paradox Prism) shattering and transporting them into another universe. Now, they have to find a way back home.

Once everyone gathers again, with all the explanations done, Sally asks Sonic for his help to fix their world, which Sonic (unsurprisingly) agrees on. He figures it won't hurt to help them out, but Shadow is against it. He notes how finding a way back home should be their priority, and when Sonic doesn't budge, he leaves to find the gem on his own.

So far, things don't appear that terrifying, right? There is some tension, but nothing bad.

At first, things are normal. Sonic and co. learn about the time loop, the Freedom Fighters (FFs for short) tell them about their other selves, who disappeared during the Second Genesis Wave, nothing problematic... but then, it starts.

It is little suggestions, like the FFs introducing Sonic and Tails to their "parents" and insisting they call them that, despite their clear discomfort since these people are obviously strangers. Or insisting they join the FFs, because that would make them all feel more like a "team". Or telling them how they can stay and defend the kingdom as it is their temporary “home”. Stuff like that.

But then, things get a bit more noticeable and very uncomfortable. Soon, Sonic finds Sally telling him in a warning tone how "the old Sonic would do X or he would say Y", subtly suggesting he behave more like his counterpart, even getting angry when Sonic refuses or his not pleased at some of the jerkass behavior his counterpart had. Like, he's told to hold a grudge against Silver, which Sonic refuses, as Silver is his close friend. The rest of his friends are also being treated similarly, like Knuckles being told to guard a nameless floating island (which used to be Angel Island), but Knuckles points out how there is not even a Master Emerald to guard (and is very confused over the fact that Team Chaotix in this universe weren’t detectives) and he'd rather help Sonic out. And things only escalate from there.

Sonic and co. would eventually become creeped out by everyone's behavior. Basically, whoever remembers them (or rather, their Archie iterations) is forcing them to act and talk in a specific way, and when they don't, the ''punishments'' range from glares to outright being yelled at for not being more like their old counterparts.

Eventually, Sonic and co. learn about the time loops (which everyone tried to keep secret) and the reason why they're forced to behave in a certain way is because everyone is hoping that the time loop will break if they act the way ''the story was scripted before'', to the point of sending away Knuckles, Rouge and Silver because they weren't part of the team (in the meantime, Shadow manages to find the gem everyone is searching for and decides to return and get everyone out of this place).

Sonic is conflicted at this point, as he now understands the problem, but he is not happy they're all stomping on his and his friends' freedom of being able to help the way they know. He wants to save this world, but the more he learns about it, the more doubt starts forming whether they can do it without some major help. It is one thing to defeat a giant monster. It is another to fix a broken world (especially without the Chaos Emeralds/Super Sonic), even more when he's being told to go against his own principles.

He still wants to help, but in his own way, and he is sick of being told to be more like his other self. Things get even worse when Shadow returns and suggests they leave, pointing out how there really isn't anything they can do and they have their own world they need to save. Most of the group agrees with Shadow, admitting it feels wrong being here and they don't belong here, even if they still want to help. Unfortunately, they're overheard by their hosts... who basically have a mental breakdown and snap, refusing to let any of them leave. They have waited for so long to be saved from this endless time loop and call the group selfish for taking that hope away.

It escalates into a battle of the Game!Characters freedom to go home and the Archie!Characters forcing them to stay because they cannot allow to ''lose'' them again, as well as into a huge argument whether the Pre-SGW world can even be saved. Sonic's philosophy had always been about moving on to the next thing, but how do you move on when you're unable to continue?

In short, Sonic is also faced with the literally opposite problem from the one he dealt in Sonic and The Black Knight: instead of being frozen forever, this world cannot move on.

At some point, Sonic would ask Sally what would happen if everyone followed the ''script'', but the time loop happened again, and an unhinged Sally would repeat they would do it over and over again until they get to the ''right ending'', which disturbs Sonic.

Then, the time loop occurs again, and the FFs wake up. However, there is no trace of the Game!Characters, nor do the FFs remember them and happily go on with their day. Finally, the universe has balanced itself out and any trace of Sonic has been erased.

Everything is good.

...

Note, this isn't much of a ''happy'' ending, but more of a ''definitive'' ending. There is no more to add, there are no more time loops. Everything that needed to be erased had been erased and this universe is now completely split off. It ended, but at a great cost and everyone should just forget about it.

Also, as I said before, this is just a story concept and I have no plans of writing it out as an actual story. I’m not that attached to Archie!Sonic nor the Freedom Fighters, so I’m not interested in writing it. If someone wants to write this story down, go ahead, but make sure to credit me in the process.

I've been churning through so many Sonic character redesigns, here are some of the sketches. I post these and more on my Discord server as I make them, these are just the ones I probably won't bother turning into full drawings. Here's the thoughts on each:

The Freedom Fighters, but I specifically imagined these being their outfits during Sonic Forces since Forces' story could be so similar to SatAM's. Sally and Bunnie have stories and trios before this (Sally with Mighty and Ray, being smol woodland creatures, and Bunnie being with Fang and Trip, being western outlaws hired by Eggman)

Nicole the Holo-lynx. Now looks more holo and more like a lynx. May or may not make an even fleshier version on top of these

Sage, also made to look more digital, but honestly I don't care enough about her character to really consider including her anywhere. Who knows tho

Jewel, made to look like an actual insect. I got the insect Mobian idea first with Charmy of course but I'll probably draw the Chaotix in full later

Jet, honestly one of my favorite redesigns so far. It just ended so perfect, even making his shoes more like bird claws.

Big, basically the same just made more frazzled and wild-looking

Lanolin, made to look like that other kind of sheep and also made chubbier cuz sheep have a chubby aura

Bokkun, now is himself the exploding message. I wanted him to look like Eggman just randomly strapped a rocket to his back, instead of being a normal jetpack. He loves exploding and being rebuilt.

One of the Ancients, now given clothes that match the vibe of some of their creations. I also thought it would be cooler if the Koco were their actual brains/bodies, and the gel exterior is another part of their technology to make them stronger and more versatile.

I started these ages ago for a full lineup with more characters but by now I think my Sonic drawing style has shifted a bit! But in any case I really like the rendering on them
