For my next 3 characters I drew for Inktober I did Scavenger from Arknights for ‘Scurry’, Batman for ‘Bat’, and Bivalve the Clam from the Sonic Comics for ‘Scallop’.

Since we'll never see them again, what's your opinion on the other freedom fighter teams before and after the reboot? I see some characters being talked about from time to time, but never really the groups as a whole.

Oh well, in general? I rather like the other Freedom Fighter teams just in general, but I wish that more of them could have been developed further along. The idea of there being other groups fighting against Robotnik/Eggman's rule/encroachment over the planet is a natural one, and it helps to alleviate the idea that Sonic is literally the only one who can do anything against the guy.

That being said, in general a lot of the other Freedom Fighter groups didn't really get a lot of development. In the case of Archie it was because a lot of the established ones were created during the early, gag-a-day times of the book, and in the post-reboot things were cut off before deeper exploration could be managed. That being said, I still like the other FF groups just in general, and while more could have been done we DID get a pretty stand-out idea from them in the form of the Sand-Blasters.

These guys are spectacular, because they're a great example of how fighting for a good cause doesn't automatically make you a good guy- Jack's ruthlessness winds up causing more problems for Sonic and company than anything, even going so far as to create more problems for everyone when his refusal to let go of his suspicions of former Robians causes a new Dark Egg Legion chapter to form.

Its interesting to see because while their overall goal matches up with Sonic and the Knothole Freedom Fighters, it doesn't really make them friends or even allies due to what they consider acceptable in the fight against Eggman.

In short though? Yeah, I like the other Freedom Fighter groups. Even if a lot of the time they weren't given much development.

... that said, the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters deserve some kind of award for being the blandest group out there.

It's not just the fact that they're simply Talking Animals in a cast of anthromorphs- even their NAMES are boring. Fluke the Whale, Bottlenose the Dolphin, Ray the Manta, Bivalve the Clam (FUCK YEAH, FUCKING BIVALVE!)... these have got to be some of the least creative names for a group of sea critters in all of fiction. Seriously, what does it say when "P.B. the Jellyfish" is the standout name???

Some scans of Archie Sonic #185 are missing the back story and since it never got posted to YouTube, I’ll post it here and YouTube since I think this story is important to Archie Sonic history (and will probably never get reprinted just like the rest of Archie Sonic) since it was Mike Gallagher’s last Sonic story while working for Archie. He was with Archie Sonic from the very beginning at Archie Sonic Mini Series #0 in Nov 1992. This Story was published on Feb 2008

The Misfit Badniks Salty, Soggy Sequel

Synopsis

Motobug and Crabmeat are in the Mobian Sea talking not only about the Sonic's defeat of Pseudo-Sonic but also about rebuilding Pseudo-Sonic by the robot surgeon, Burrobot, who founded a "size doubler" which enlarges Pseudo-Sonic, similar to Burrobot's uncle. They then celebrated that with Pseudo-Sonic, they could take over Mobius, but just after that, Motobug and Crabmeat are ambushed by Bottlenose Dolphin from the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters. Orbinaut sees this and he and some of the Badniks then engage in combat against the Freedom Fighters but the Badniks are easily defeated. Caterkiller leads the last wave of Badniks to fight the Freedom Fighters giving Burrobot enough time for Psuedo-Sonic to be repaired. Pseudo-Sonic waves the Freedom Fighters and the Badniks away and declares war on Mobius since he's the biggest thing on the planet. Things seem lost until Fluke the Blue Whale flattens him and tells the rest of the Forty Fathom Freedom Fighters to bring the Badniks into a pile. He then flattens them into a cube along with the island.

Oke doke. I will be excluding Finitevus from this list, as I already mentioned him as one of the Top 5 Sonic characters list. Though that said, he is definitely one of the best Archie Only Sonic characters, never let that ever be said. 

So, without further ado-

5. Scourge the Hedgehog

Scourge is included on this list due to how far he came from his initial origins. Originally an incredibly one note ‘Evil Sonic’, he was re-invented into a far more legitimate and compelling threat as Scourge. More importantly, he became a unique twist to the ‘Evil Mirror’ villain trope that had been used in the past with Metal Sonic and Shadow, possessing all of Sonic’s faults and none of his virtues, with said faults corrupted well beyond what Sonic exhibits. Unique in his quest to differentiate himself from his counterpart, its hard to argue that Scourge wasn’t one of the most noteworthy aspects o the Pre-Reboot. 

4. Mina Mongoose 

Infamous plot thread she was associated with aside, Mina Mongoose did in fact hold a fairly unique character within the book, starting out as a newcomer and alone in the world after the coming of Eggman before trying and failing to become a Freedom Fighter, and then finding new ways to support the fight against Robotnik/Eggman via her music. While her function was ultimately to act as a third party in the justly reviled, it says a good deal about how her character developed and evolved beyond that purpose. 

3. Hope Kintobor 

A glorious rendition of the age old trope of the White Sheep- a good character from a bad family. The half-sister of Snively and Niece of Robotnik, Hope was orphaned and spent time among the Mobians, traditional enemies of her people, and their kindness in the face of her species and her heritage caused her to become among those rare Overlanders to befriend Mobians. While she didn’t get a whole lot of play, she was an intriguing concept to witness, and the way she played off of Team Dark was nothing short of exquisite. 

2. Clove the Pronghorn

A shining star of the post-reboot continuity, Clove represented some of the best writing to be had in the entire Archie book, as well as a rarity in the book- an antagonist with deeply sympathetic motivations. Working to save the life of her sisster Cassia, Clove became one of Eggman’s ‘Egg Bosses’, a ranking member of the Eggman Empire and local enforcer of his will. She is coldly effective at her job, yet hates what she does for the sake of her sister... only to discover she’s being cruelly strung along by Eggman, with no hope in sight. It’s a grim, compelling scenario, let alone for a Sonic comic.

1. Elias Acorn

It’s kind of a miracle that Elias succeeded as well as he did. On paper he should have failed upon introduction- an older brother of Sally, never mentioned or seen up to til that point, brought in on the order of their father in what amounted as an act of spite against Sally, he never really should have been as well received as he was. Yet, thanks to the efforts of Bollers and later Flynn, Elias became one of the biggest success stories of the book, presenting a tale of a well meaning guy pushed into a role he never wanted, only to eventually GROW into a hero when the chips were down. For no other reason than being unique and likable when his very concept should have prevented that do I place Elias so far up on the list. 

Honorable Mention: Bivalve the Clam

FUCKING BIVALVE! FUCK YEAH MAN! LONG LIVE THE ‘VALVE! 

Unique Case: Nicole the Holo-Lynx. 

This is something of a unique case- Nicole got her start in SatAM, and as such is not ‘Archie Exclusive’, yet her development in Archie is so astounding and iconic that it has completely shaped the perception of her as a character. I bring her up because while she isn’t Archie Exclusive, her development into her own being and her arcs are among the best things to come out of Archie period, and it feels remiss to not mention her in SOME capacity. So while she can’t really ‘be’ in the list, she gets a shoutout all the same.
